Let’s put some things to rest.

- Guardian is not the best or even close to the best bunker in the game.

- Guardians are crippled in the mobility sector, as we are forced to go GS/Sword + JI. (IF that playstyle suits what you’re trying to do, you’re not crippled at all: Period. It has a ton of mobility, but you have to take those 2 weapons… at a cost of DPS (due to sword)… sword really needs a stun or imob (signets) ~or~ chill/cripple (we dont’ have) to become effective).

- Guardians are hands down the best point control / Group Damage NEGATION class in the game: Staff/Hammer + Wall + Sanct + Shield(s). PERIOD>

- Guardians have the best Group Stability in game.

- Guardian TOP Burst rotation is Gimmicky, but very good when pulled off.

- Guardian TOP Burst falls off w/ larger group vs group as splash/aoe dmg kills Focus and our low HP pool.

- Guardian Sustain is good.

- Guardian Group Healing is great.

Guardians were the poster child for Balance and now that most classes have been balanced they are feeling ‘weak’, as we could previously take less survivability and add more DPS and still be ok… this is becoming less and less due to our significantly LOW HP pool as other classes get buffed to “our” standard…

Guardian’s are the best bunkers in the game. Look at the top tpvp teams and there bunker is a guardian. When you type something like they aren’t it basically invalidates everything else you wrote because most knowledgeable players will stop reading after that.

This needs to be tightened up to something like 2 leaves in 24 hours and on the 3rd the debuff. If your internet is that bad that you get disconnected all the time for periods longer then about 10 minutes you shouldn’t be doing tpvp anyway.

I think they should make it that it pulls a person from solo q. I would much rather play with four people that are grouped together and coordinating then solo q even if it meant fighting a group. People will quickly learn that solo q is nothing but a random hair pull where the worst players still win about 40% of the time and the best of the best only win a bit more then half the time. How often would this happen anyway how many people queue with four lol. That is a rare occurance.

Solo queue was always going to be like this. Its five totally random people thrown together and Im sure more people are coming back to tpvp for this so even more newbies. Only you can control the level of frustration you feel. All you can do is play your best. How is it different from hotjoin? Its guaranteed to be 5v5, there will be rating to put you with similar skill level players, and there will be a leaderboad. All the people that acted like there would be tons of strategy discussion in the 2 minute wait time and people switching to needed builds etc that was always mostly a pipe dream this is a free for all lol. Try to play the right way and hope you have a couple of people on your side who will do the same and you’ll probably win. There will be plenty of horrible matches for everyone.

I can’t help but laugh that if the original rules were followed and the finals were best of 3 in both the EU and NA tournaments, we would have two completely different teams at PAX.

Some issues were raised about the best of 5 finals giving an advantage to the Saturday winner but that clearly wasn’t the case today! Go SYNC! Comeback kids!

I prefer best of 5 it gives better room to counterplay.

I’m very impressed by the way people adapt and don’t lose morale.

Its not necessarily counter play its basically that the more games you play the more chances there are for the cream to rise to the top. You rarely see upsets in professional sports in 5 and 7 game series that are the norm in a lot of pro sports. The longer series are because even the best teams can have a few bad games you don’t want the best out because they lose a couple of games.

I question how much use something like this would get. Solo queue if you feel like its just so bad to lose a game occassionaly as part of a team. That or smurf account or hotjoin.

Play balanced a d unselfish selft sustainable builds is probably a big one for me. You would want a decent mix of CC, healing, damage and mobility to cover yourself and set up kills.

I think this is pretty good advice. Some people will say you can discuss roles in chat and switch characters during the warmup but in reality that is a pipedream imo with random people. Many people don’t load in until the match is seconds away from s tarting and many people are attached to certain specs and or only play one class. Something well rounded that can do multiple things (albiet probably not at the highest level) will probably be the best way to go most of the time unless we are talking about Guardian Bunker if thats your speciality you should probably run it.

Warriors arent op but that stun lock build is bad gameplay plain and simple and another typical lazy A-net type fix. Every PVP MMORPG I have played before started out with some kind of stun lock type build at release and quickly nerfed it out of existence. A-net think this is something to add to a game mid course to buff a class. I know there is nothing more fun then to be stunned over and over again until dead. Not! A-net loves it CC. Its somehow justified because of dodges and stun breaks. Maybe if everyone had three stun breaks. Most people run 1.

Stuff like this just gives A-net the easy way out. Balance the classes please so it doesn’t pay to do this. That is the answer not lame restrictions on classes. Because some class is op I can’t do stuff like run a two guardian group if I want to? I like to play my guard and thats it. So if I have a friend I want to group with and he wants to play guardian one of us has to do something we don’t want to do because of A-nets balance failures? Too many band aid type fixes are put out on these forums.

Elo based system basics:

If you’re winning and not advancing, it’s because the rating gap between you and the next person is too large for one win to bridge it. If you’re only playing against people who are like rank 900+, it will take you a lot of wins to gain enough rating to move up, and one loss will drop you like a stone (and you’ll get those losses btw, even if it’s to smurfs, it’s very close to inevitable). If the opposition is weaker than you it’s quite easy to go 4 wins 1 loss and when the leaderboards update you’re lower than before. If the gap between you and the next guy up is large enough, it can still take you several wins to pass them even if you’re playing against strong opposition.

BTW smurfing won’t help unless you’re just doing it to protect your rating when you’re not running with your main team, or you get matched against those who are around the same rating as your main account and take more rating from them than they should have lost because your smurf is low rated. Are you telling me I have to accept this rottend decay system? Because thats how there system works ? Because if you are I categorically reject that. They can and should do better.

Just like elo hell only exists for those who are unable to adapt their approach to deal with lower skilled games.

I know everyone has their own mythology around elo, but it’s just math. The only way to exploit it is to find a way to make 2+2=5.

You are not saying anything people do not know. People can’t advance because they don’t have the opportunity to play enough games against people ranked higher then them because a lot of these higher ranked players either rarely play(the super slow decay system allows them to stay ranked highly without playing) or they intentionally only play a few games here and there and use smurf accounts. The rating decay needs to be passed through again end of story you can chant Elo all day long it doesn’t change the fact that the decay system sucks.

Great video and nice Meditation DPS build adaptation. AH with STAFF is awesome sauce. But, beware everybody… this is not a bunker build. Don’t try to bunk with a roamer/support build, unless you want to be seen has a really bad bunker.

This build cannot hold more than 30 seconds against 3 guys that know their stuff.

I think you could probably fudge through as a bunker if your side didnt have one in a solo q type match of true randoms versus true radoms of average skill level. People do solo q and sometimes there isn’t a perfect choice. Certainly not at higher level team versus team play though. But it definitely is a roaming type build to me and I think this will be a very nice build for true solo q pvp when it hits next tuesday.

I know it is, you don’t need to convince me its bad, you gotta convince the GW2 developers.
The current decay system works where if you don’t play in a month you drop like 25 spots and I’m not sure how it works after that, I think its every month you drop 25 spots, which isn’t much if you ask me. So you have a lot of players playing 1 game a month just to stay at a good spot on leaderboard while you have massive amounts of players in the % trying to get to a good spot but since you rank down faster than you rank up its very hard to do without a decent team. To some people being rank 500 and under is very nice and good spot to just chill at. There is a post someplace of someone being rank 350 or so and he hasn’t played in like 2 months or so.

This game is very lenient towards knocking people off leaderboards. I know starcraft ladder hardly moved as well, but because this game gives you rank points by playing a non competitive game like hotjoin, its very abusive, in GW1 the only way to get rank was by playing tpvp. I don’t think that should be the case in GW2 but GW2 should seriously relook the amount of rank points you can get in hotjoins. Theres no incentive to continue tpvp after you become top 25 on leaderboards when theres a huge incentive to play hotjoin and rank up super fast without any risks whatsoever.

All he has to do is play 1 game a month and he’ll stay top 5.

I wasn’t trying to be rude to you or anything just venting my frustrations. You produced good evidence yesterday about how bad the decay is in a thread that the devs posted in and they just totally ignored it. Unfortunately we seem to be fighting a losing battle here they put in some kind of rating decay and I guess they feel they have more pressing things to work on before they would do another pass through on the rating decay system.

Regarding decay – it’s working. I was at r300 when i stopped playing 1.5 months ago and now i am r600, so there’s that.

Not to be rude but i don’t think you should be ranked at all. Im not saying you should be dropped under 10000 people or something but thwat should happen is you fall off and then if you come back you can get right back on with a fairly modest streak of success maybe not quite as high as you were. This has nothing to do with myself personaly I solo queue way too much to worry about being in the top 1000 I just think it is not the right way to do it. The people that are playing actively deserve the best chance to be in the top 1000. A month and a half of not even playing is one match is a long time.

dont forget they fight randoms too and this guyz will win there 1v1 1v2 most time and clear nodes vs strangers in seconds and see where they are needed on map

someone like mogmow will kill alot people easy and make so enemy team most time fight outnumbered

you will not see after 10 matches how good someone is but with statistics than 500+ games i bet you will have playerz win games more than 55%-60%

Not really. There are other great solo players that just never had the time or inclination to join a team, and are thus unknown, that are just as good as any of the guys you listed most likely. Its just the numerical odds. I believe the cream of the crop will top out at maybe 65% win ratio and it wouldn’t surprise me if a little lower. It will be interesting to see what happens to say the least.

GW2 is too lenient and doesn’t want to punish ratings of good players even if they haven’t played in 4 months.

All this leads too is people ranking down faster than they rank up due to people with higher rating not playing so your consistently playing against people your rating or worse.

Which is totally kitten backwards they should be rewarding doing well currently more and reward the people actually playing the game by giving them a better chance at making the top 1000.

Character locking doesn’t happen until the game start countdown. You still have the ready time to switch. This decision was made specifically in consideration for solo queue. We can always move when character locking begins, but when the feature launches, it will happen at the countdown. This feature is intended mostly to stop exploits where people would switch characters for different skill setups or to reset cooldowns.

Personally, I think it should lock the second you get in there OR you shouldn’t be able to see what you are playing against until the game starts.

I agree there is still the problem of counter picking after joining a match. I’m sure we’ll find a middle ground with these issues.

Why go for the middle ground. The only way to ensure complete fairness is a double blind set up where professions are not revealed until the match begins, and classes are then locked at that point.

A cooldown of greater then 60 seconds would be fine but not changing the number of conditions it cleanses. Plenty of builds use elites with timers greater then 70 Isec internal cooldown you propose for Lyssa runes. I am not going to use a rune set to be able to cleanse 3 conditions every 90 seconds.

So you want to nerf a skill that hits for about 220 on average. (although what you are proposing could allow it to hit for way more on occassion.) These retaliation whines are getting old. They weren’t as bad when retaliation was actually a very strong skill the first few months of the game.

Locking is fine. The situation the op mentions can happen in reverse. Thats what makes it balanced. There will be times where you can be potentially helped by this or hurt by this randomly. The moral to this story is play what you think is best and deal with the consequence. No cheese stacking thanks. If you think having a bunker is so important queue as one every time.

Because the basic-damage of those weapons are higher + weapon-traits synergyize better with affecting 5 skillz instead of 3 or 2, which is mostly the case for one-handed weapons.

I think if you were to objectively look at all two hand weapons you would fine that is not really the case. In theory if what you said was 100% true I would agree. Given how mediocre the balance in this game is however I dont really buy it. To be honest looking at my traits as a great sword/staff guardian I dont see traits synergizing better at all with two hand weapon. I see traits such as right hand strength which give you 15% free crit chance with all one hand weapons. I really don’t see traits at all that synergize better withs staff and greatsword versus 1 hand weapons. Reallys its more of a slight damage increase which imo does not make up for extra sigil. Don’t give them too much credit they haven’t earned it.

The best part about solo queue will be all the people that finally understand how bad they are now that they can’t blame groups or partial groups for everything. I suspect however that the new complaint will be bad luck and that somehow they are getting the worst solo players on there team every match.

I’ve been playing this build a bit in spvp and imo its the best blend of tankiness and dps i’ve seen with some support elements and quite a bit of self condition cleansing thrown in on the side. Lots of fun to play.

Retaliation never gets to 400 damage. First of all its capped at something like 329 damage but even that may be the pre pvp retal damage nerf numbers. Its been awhile since I tested it but it seemed like 220-240 with about 3000 attack power. I have two accounts and I went to custom arena and just had my one account wail around on my guardian with retal up. By the way that would make 27 hits or so to get to 6-7k damage. Im no expert on thiefs but there is no attack in the game that hits 27 times in one use I dont think. I’ll test it later but 220-240 is pretty much seared in my mind regardless of the speed of the attack is what retaliation returns per hit damage wise.

No its not useful at all. AoE knockback with projectile blocking is totally worthless. It might be not be the greatest ability in the world but its ludicrous to act like its not valuable in certain builds. I can take a point from anyone 1 v1 with hammer and scepter shield combo.

Being in the top 1000 is not indicative of anything necessarily. Just running in a group 99% of the time is enough to get you into the top 1000 unless your entire group are potted plant level players. The active pvp player base is small and there are not many dedicated groups at all.

The ability to spam a stun is bad game play. GW2 has tons of elements in that any other MMORPG that has been around awhile and has pvp has gotten rid of. There are not enough stun breakers and dodges in the world to get away from this eventually. I am a believer in making a game fun as part of the balance equation ie does this game element make the game more fun? Losing control of your character indefinitely until you die is not fun to the vast majority of people. There are plenty of ways to make warriors stronger without relying on a cheese mechanic. Once again A-net takes the easy way out. I

In the context of this game, where healing is weak, Guardians can put out a lot of healing and lots of boons. Learn to adjust your expectations accordingly and you will quickly understand Guards are a great support class. Every class gets a powerful self heal you don’t need to be able to put out tons of heals to keep others a live. But you can put out a lot of small healing .

What generally happens imo is people use a popular cookie cutter build go into spvp with it and see how they like it and then tweak over time. You expect too much out of the average player to know everything day one and to understand everythign about a build before using it. Thats called oo high a barrier to entry for a lot of people and it definitely exists. Providing a few common template builds for each profession would 100% be helpful for the new player.

They are not OP at all. A-Net has nerfed tons of stuff since releasese and Guardians have never taken significant hits. They are a solid class and really A-net should be looking at them as there class design goals dont right. Thats why you see so many of them although really I would be interesed to see a class breakdown # wise I have a sneaky suspicion they are a bout middle of the pack numberswise. I always see tons of warriors, mesmers, and thieves.

These are unanswerable questions. Even though GW1 had some of the most compelling pvp ever they decided to almost remake the wheel in GW2 and ended up with a worse product imo.(although I stil mostly enjoy it)

This is op skill right now for solo q tpvp. 6K heal with one ally around on a 40 second timer is too good to pass up. I have been paring it with stand your ground and contemplation of purity for condition cleanse. With shelter that is like 13k heals every 48 seconds. You will rarely use it with at least one ally around. To me if you don’t have a dedicated team to back you up all that extra healing is super valuable.

I already explained the proper way to do this. Patchnotes are released in a dev started thread. Community discusses changes are made or things are scrapped based on feedback. Eventually testing days are scheduled on test server that are opened to everyone so everyone that wants to can test and give feedback. Based on this testing there are more revisions etc and then you have what ammounts to the patch notes ready to go live. It is not rocket science.

Retaliation is fine Sorrow pretty much covered it. The visual queue for it is ludicrous and nobody has it perma anymore so stop attacking people with it with fast hitting attacks when its up.

I think this just goes to show that the skill of the player matters more then the build (as long as its not something totally out of whack) and Stunning is very good. Not that the build isn’t a good one, because it is staff and GS combo is totally underated, but a lot of people are under the impression you have to play straight up bunker or some kind of meditation healing burst spec to be successful as a Guardian at tpvp which is just not the case. Inner Fire is a great trait for tpvp and provides loads of extra damage.

I see so many QQ’s (many of them mine, actually) and I feel that we really don’t give ANet enough credit sometimes. Yes, they had overpromised and underdelivered and yes, the balances are not as fast as we’d like them (but could they ever be?)

Many people forget that there are so many things that ANet does RIGHT, so I thought I’d point them out.

1. Each class is unique
-despite skill mechanics not being all that complicated, each class manages to be vastly unique in their own way, and the play style changes drastically. ANet has done a great job making them so special.

2. Combat is fluid and responsive
- Combat is fluid as heck, both PVE and PVP. I love how mobile all my characters are, despite many skills having mini channels.

3. ANet doesn’t crank up the numbers
- You think it’s really hard to beef up a class? It’s actually quite simple: you crank up the numbers. Rather than taking the short cut, the temporary way, I love how ANet takes a very in-depth approach towards balance

4. PVP maps are varied
- You may argue that since they’re all conquest modes, they’re essentially the same. Many people don’t give ANet enough credit for their very careful placement of each box, cliff, each bump that they had meticulously thought out. You don’t see a single aspect of each map that doesn’t have a purpose.

5. ANet listens to the 95% rather than the 5%
- This can be seen as a good or a bad. I personally didn’t really like how most of the PVP gear is so easily accessible for most players. But most people – especially casual players – can really appreciate how you don’t have to be running from area to area, or having to hit certain rating in PVP to be able to buy high end looking armors (tPVP chests, anyone?). Same can be said about many other aspects of the game that are given almost as ‘freebies’ to players, while not in other games (lack of transportations, dyeing options, skin giveaways, etc.)

Just my tidbit.

The combat is fluid and responsive for a MMORPG thats the only one I’ll give you. Number 3 doesn’t even make sense. Tell me a game that balances by beefing up the numbers solely. By the way A-Net has done this in some cases what do you call increasing signet stat bonuses? It would take too long to address every bullet point but imo the only thing that makes this game semi-compelling is the combat. Everything else is lacking. To me these are a bunch of young devs that decided to invent the wheel when they made this game instead of following tried and true methods set down over the years by other games including the company that employs them own game GW1. It reminds me a little of DAOC versus Warhammer. A lof of the same people made both games but they decided they were going to do something a lot different with Warhammer and it mostly backfired so that a game made with many of millions of dollars actually ended up being worse and making less money then a game made a with a few millon dollars.

Retaliation is not meants to be strong. It would be kittened if it was and it was for a very long time. Guardian is a very strong class in all aspects of the game the one idiot saying they are bad in WvWvW must have just had a lobotomy.

Any plans to change Healing Breeze?

I used it for a little bit in spvp just fooling around to have easy perma-retaliation it procs like 26 seconds of retaliaition with minimum plus buff if you have the one trait of retal on heal skill but it is just too unwieldy. I think it would be fine if it wasn’t a channeled cone (say 3/4th of second cast time or something) and automatically healed allies within say 600-900 range and it had a little lower cooldown. As it is currently the channel takes too long and good luck lining up allies in the cone to heal.

I hope Skyhammer comes back to tPvP

I love the people that cry this map was removed only because so many people qq. Guess what? That’s what’s called a smart decision. What isn’t smart is forcing the majority to play a map it hates. Remove the fall deaths and I would be perfectly fine with the map. Otherwise its nothing but a cheap gimmick map imo.
