I think its pretty obvious that GW2 was rushed out the door unfinished just like 99% of MMORPGs. I’m sure they thought they would get the resources needed to add the lacking features to spvp rather quickly but they never materialized due to the popularity of PVE and especially WvWvW.
This thread is precious or at least the the ammount of people claiming they would play the same ammount if there was no real progression. Most people need carrots of some sort to continue playing whether the pvp is fun or not. It doesn’t really matter skins, ranks, titles. leaderboards I like all that stuff. Kudos to the people willing admit they need something which I am certanly among.
Powerful AoE centered builds are bad for the game. A-net mentioned nerfing AoE and it never happened.
Considering the number of people on the leaderboards with like 10-20 games played, I’d say that is a fairly ignorant assumption. The #10 on the NA leaderboard right now has 13 games played.
Not only that, do you even KNOW how ELO works? Playing with lower ranked players will lower your teams overall rating. A lower rated team loses less points on a loss than a higher rated one, especially when matched up with a full premade when they’re totally outclassed. That’s what the ratings are for.
Newsflash regarding ranks: this queue and the leaderboard was the first decent thing they added to sPvP since launch, maps aside. Most people don’t bother grinding through something that is terrible, and those same people don’t exactly look at someone with a badge-of-grinding (high rank) as anything special. And judging by your performance in the game shown in your screenshot and your lack of presence on the leaderboard, I don’t think you’re one to talk.
Don’t get your panties in such a bunch. By the way do you know how ELO works? Why does somebody that defends this horrible match making system always ask that question? Did you ever stop to think for a second that a system that allows newbs that go on a hot streak in a limited ammount of games to somehow face a premade that lost a few games is possibly bad whatever you call it? Why do you put so much blind trust in this system? Its needs a lot of work regardless of whether its split queues that are needed or a longer wait to match make or a system where you need to build up your rating a bit before you can appear on the leaderboard or can possibly be deemed good enough to face premades. For you to act like everything is hunkydory makes you sound a little ignorant tbh or else you have some kind of interest to protect ie you run in premades all the time and are happier then a pig in slop to be able to pubstomp all day.
Im tired of the 1000 engineers with this build already. Its needs to be nerfed. I have no clue how difficult it is to play but when I see a cookie cutter build for a class it tells me its op.

Pretty much. Too hard to take down and more damage then other tanky builds.
The problem is the skill level of certain thieves. When I solo queue and i get multiple thieves on my team I lose like 90% of the time. A good thief is an asset. A bad one is the most worthless thing in the world that dies as soon as it gets farted on.
The only advice I would give solo queue peope is don’t expect to win and don’t expect to be able to change the way anybody plays during the match even if you try to be nice and form up some kind of strategy most people will ignore it or not even see it as they have all chat turned off. These types of posts are nice in theory but really there is very little you can do to improve your solo queue experience except prepare yourself for the loss and frequent idiocy and not get bent out of shape over it.
I don’t think it shows up as a loss, but it does hurt their rating. So yeah, if you see a 900 ranked player with a 95% win ratio, that’s probably why.
That sounds dubious. If it knows you lost, ie penalizing your rating the exact way a loss would. why wouldn’t your loss totals update. I have 2 accounts I’ll test it if I get some time on the account I rarely play. It would be easy to win a few games and drop a few matches at the very end and watch what happens to your rating. If you continue to move up the rankings its not working correctly.

I pretty much expect next to nothing in this patch. Some bug fixes maybe a slight nerft to Elementalist.
Retaliation has already taken some big nerfs. I feel like I have time traveled back months ago with this thread and these complaints. I can’t remember the last time anybody I have pvp’d with have complained about retaliation its been a long time.
I don’t get it, do you not want devs to explore builds that are not up to par in spvp and try to figure out how to make them better?
I’m going to give you a break because I believe you really care about this game but these sorts of fairyland comments from the top players actually hurts the game long term because A-net goes out of there way to put extra stock in your comments and generally dismisses balances concerns from the average player. Maybe I should explain why its a fairyland comment? Because he should know why it doesn’t work long before now already and not be wasting time on closed arguments. This isn’t some scientist out in the field this is a clueless pvp dev wasting his time on something that has been looked at before and deemed unworthy by players much better then him have explaimed why it is unworthy many times before.

Jax has some good symbol AH builds in his thread although they are pvp oriented.
In hot joins, you can win everytime and next u want a challenge, and try tournaments.
But there u get your butt kicked a lot! Ending the match against rank 60 LOOOL And im just rank 18.
Where is the balance? I want to do tournaments vs my own rank, not vs ppl who play this game 22/7
For me, no more Spvp!
1. I quess you never play’d paid Tpvp
2.for TPvP you (in most case’s) need another build
3.TPvP is Team Challenge, join solo is more for players who knows how it work
4.Rank doesn’t represent how good they are.try to make more team build for tpvp and find some friends to play with.
Rank does tell how experienced you are however. A lot of tpvp has almost nothing to do with who is best mouse jockey/fighter. Its all about knowing the maps, how to attack point intelligently, when to engage or disengage from a fight, when to do certain things ie dodge, stun break, stomp, cc plus a lot of other things. You don’t know that right away and really it probably takes about 15-20 levels to learn all those nuances for your average player. It probably wouldn’t be popular but maybe it would be better if A-Net made all hotjoins 5v5 and prevented you from doing Tpvp until at least glory rank 10. And add a brief video tutorial like someone mentioned in tpvp before the match you could watch during the start up time.

My personal opinion, not backed up by anything but experience, is that its a very simplistic system that needs a lot of work. They should explain it roughly to us at the very least. The fact that they have not leads me to be suspicious about it. Maybe someone can ask them this question directly at the next state of the game. How does your MMR work.
These abilities need to be fixed. The arguments on why they are unfair are very solid. The arguments in there favor not so much. I play a guard and use blow out skill but really its cheap and when I’m on the other end of them I can clearly see how cheap/unbalanced they are. It is not good gameplay. At the end of the day the question should always be what is good gaemplay. If you explained how these blow out skills worked to someone who has played pvp games, but not guild wars 2, they would say its a bs mechanic without a doubt.

I agree, but don’t be surprised if this thread gets kittened again.
After all, separate queues for solo and teams means that premades lose free rank points and rating by making it harder for them to farm pugs. Brace for the kitten storm of ‘pro’ players who enjoy their easy wins.
To be fair most of the top players have been good about this and really would enjoy fighting full groups of comparative skill level then pub stomping. There are some delusional ones though that act like there rating is mostly built on beating teams of good players. A group of people thrown together in the mists that doesn’t group together often is a glorified pug. There are not many dedicated groups at all like Paradigm and Curse. That being said something needs to be done soon.
Rankings should definitely be reset periodically. I don’t understand arguments to the contrary at all. People are constantly leaving and joining the game.
Almost everybody feels like they can’t run a group without a Guardian and/or Elementalist nothing interesting about that.
Part of the problem is a lot of newbies dont use forums and don’t really want help. You have to want help to get it. I know everybody has the heart warming story of the newbies they helped. Too bad for every person you helped there are ten that don’t really want help they just want to solo queue for a laurel and play like a kitten. Yep, I am cynical and its comes through experience. I am not saying don’t try to help others what I am saying is the results of helping others is sadly fairly insiginificant. A inflow of players into tpvp that want to work at getting better will happen when A-net puts reasons in for them to like better rewards for sticking with things and a real solo queue and more options.
So you have to be in the top 90th percentile to be in the top 1,000. So we are suppossed to believe there are 10,000 players doing a significant ammout of pvp? Color me skeptical. The rating system needs to be refined more to keep people with very low match totals that get on a lucky win steak out of the rankings (look Mom Im 7-2 and ranked 30th!) also getting a loss when you quit a match needs to be added asap. Wake me up when these rankings are meaningful and do not just reflect who groups all the time, some newbs on a win streak, or people that quit all the time to game the system.

Geh this is the wrong thread.
[quote=1829900;Rerroll.9083:]
I still go with friends and i still soloq like before ladder….how?
Just don’t give a kitten about leaderboards, if i want to go solo or with friends (Even low ranked ones) i just go as usual…going with serious guild’s premades only just for some numbers on a worthless list? No thanks…
Your view of fun in the game is different from everyone elses. His fun and many others can be the feeling of competing and racing to the top of the leaderboards so his opinion has a great point. Introduce a real ranked system and a queue system for tournament play that doesnt affect your leaderboard ratings.
And he is just giving his opinion. If they had a better MMR system it woudn’t matter who you were queuing with because you would always be facing appropriate competition. I don’t know why you would care so much anyway about your ranking most of your wins are probably the exact opposite of what you compain about you queue as a group and face mostly pugs. The whole leaderboard is bogus until they tighten up matchmaking so groups face groups the vast majority of the time.
(edited by Kwll.1468)
Just don’t queue then. Removing the option to even solo join tournaments would kill spvp. The vast majority of people do not run in full groups all the time.
I’m not sure we need another game mode why can’t we just make killing more valuable by increasing the ammount of points for kills from 5 to 10 say. Pleny of other games have used conquest type maps but Ive never seen one where holding points is rewarded so much versus killing.
I don’t sanction being a jerk but I have to be honest and say some people are really competitive. When I played high school sports everyone got on each others kitten all the time during games.
I can’t believe people still get exicted about these stupid things. They are dreadful.
AoE needs to be nerfed. The devs don’t really have the guts to do it though they mentioned it was a problem and then did nothing. That is usually there response to any imbalance to do nothing.
Yeas it does. It happens because it’s programmed like this. I kind of get it though. Players who don’t want to jeopardize their rating have to buy new accounts if they wish to go solo/duo/trio/quadro queue = more money for ANet.
They aren’t new accounts played by experienced players. They are true newbs 95% of the time. Because of laurels and now leaderboards there are tons of new people in tpvp. Leaderboards have been out less then a week this has been like this ever since laurels.
Every build worth having is on the internet somewhere. I would never ask someone for there build too many people are jerks.
they are vulnerable to conditions. dodge their phantasm creation attacks. use aoe if you have it. when i play mesmer i usually run this spec and rarely lose 1v1, if i do it’s usually to some BS thief when i have no defensive CDs up or a heavy condi class that I can’t burst fast enough.
There are lots of bad players though that doesn’t mean anything. I;ve killed plenty of mesmers on my guardian 1v1. A well played mesmer is extremly hard to beat 1v1. You have to do almost everything right and they don’t have to do close to everything right. Very low skill cap class 1v1. Any class with strong pets is by nature intrinsically low skill cap class 1v1.
Its just a too situational build,i dont think that is so much unstopable but again is too situational to become OP or to need nerf.
Situational? When Spirit Watch is the only map Anet allow us to play, you are begging people to abuse this cheese.
Relax isnt as unstopable as op made it sound like.I would be fine to reduce the leaps range while you are carrying the orb..But again i repeat, its to situational to be looked at now,ele are op at more aspects and roles in any map..Keep an priority in your head ppl dont release the nerf bat again
Its not a nerf bat lol. Its one friggin map. No movement enhancers should work with the orb. Its not hard to understand really. I consider it a bug fix more then anything. They forgot to make these abilities not usable with the orb as far as I am concerned.
It requires a lot of stuff that to me is very high skill level play if the mesmer is good. I just don’t think that is a fair design. I’m not saying skill shouldn’t matter it just seems very auto-pilot if there is any kind of skill diffrence level or even comparable skill level the mesmer wins pretty easily. Mesmers are a very op 1v1 class.
I totally disagree with just about everything you say here because it encourages the devs to be lazy. We were promised match making that worked. If it did nothing else would matter. They will eventually cost themselves money if they don’t come up with something better because most people don’t want to do what you are saying all the time just have some chance at an ok rating. Sometimes people just want to log and do games regardless of whether they can get a group together at the time or not and they don’t want to be harshly punished by a bad MMR system when they do. Nobody is saying that somebody that solo q’s a lot should be ranked as high as somebody that groups 99% of time but the current system needs work and I am a firm believer in the phrase “the squeaky wheel gets the grease.”
Im fine with it being a very weak hitting weapon the speed of the orbs is just totally unacceptable. I can’t even finish people of below 10% that are trying to run away 90% of the time unless I get lucky when they are within in about 600 range. The immobolize is very nice but its the only reason to use the weapon and thats sad.
Being highly ranked has never necessarily equaled being super skilled in a game that rewards grouping. Because people can carry people and a lot of people don’t go to the effort of running full groups so you aren’t even fighting appropriate competition a lot of the time. This is not a knock on Gasmask just a comment on pvp MMORPGs in general I have played and been in many groups that won all the time and we frequently carried average at best players at times. In a team game being ranked #1 might mean you have rarely solo queued versus someone who is rank 50 and solo queues a lot but who actually might be a better player.
…..on when Eles will be balanced?
They won’t be balancing them instead ways to deal with them better will be put into the game so basically you will be forced to run a class/build just to deal with op ele specs. Got to love Build Bores 2 the game that said you could play how you like and be competitive and totally lied.
Slow down? What needs to happen is any kind of movement enhancer being totally disabled when you have the orb. The map is a joke and A-net is a joke for allowing this stuff to go on this long. Thats why I don’t understand how so many lemmings have blind faith in them they can’t even fix glaring imbalance in a pvp map that has been around for like 2 months. If this game wasn’t subscriptionless pvp would be a ghost town they have failed to deliver so many times.
Provided the algorithm for matchmaking and the rating you gain or lost is solid enough, there is no need to separate the queues.
Ideally this is what happens: huge pool of players who can all face each other in balanced matches, with a rating evolution that reflects their success (or failure:p)
Not separating the queues is healthy because it allows for a massive population and you can also meet anyone which is great for getting to know new players.
Having a solid algorithm for matchmaking ensures that matches are always fair and balanced, regardless of team composition. It is definitely possible for 5 solo’ers to beat a full premade, it’s all down to the rating and the matchmaking algorithm.
Having a solid algorithm to calculate how much rating you get after a win or loss ensures that you always strive to climb up the ladder, you are never demoralized for a big loss, you are never hammered down for losing, but rather it entices you to get back in the game.
Also, team ladder needs to happen:p
Exactly there should be no reason for a solo que if there match making worked better although there is the possibility that the population at any time of a given day would be low enough to defeat even the most sopkittenicated match making system unless it was coded to wait quite a bit to match which would probably be unacceptable to a lot of people. My main problem with a solo queue and group queues is that it caters to only 2 scenarios. I often group with 1 or 2 other people and I like it that way quite frankly. So if I play with a couple extra people in my group I am now the equivalent of a full group? I really would perfer they try to perfect there current system and maybe give it more time before kicking off matches(nothing too drastic a couple more minutes) to ensure better matchups then going solo queue and group queue yet. Remember they came up with all this stuff fairly recently they didn’t perfect it day one. There algorithms can be improved.
So you won 80% of 230 matches thats why this whole MMR is broken, it overly rewards grouping and rofl pub stomping, only the best of the best should be able to win at that percentage. There are way too many people with absurd win percentages. Everyone is not the Miami Heat but apparently if you run in a group of semi-competent players most of the time you can win at the same rate because the game matches you up against pugs the vast majority of the time.
(edited by Kwll.1468)
I think a better solution would be a refinemnet of there MMR system and a slightly longer wait to provide better matchups. Most people would be willing to wait 5 minutes for a better match it doesnt have to be instant queue.
Hi
am i missing some PVP NPC which have some rewards, because i dont see skins like reward, i checked mists NPC and i dont see reason why play PVP if i dont get something usefull from itThe word you are looking for is “Fun”.
That is what spvp is for.
Don’t project what drives you to do something onto someone else as the only viable reason to do something. Thats the most arrogant thing in the world to do. There are plenty of people that need a little extra carrot to chase, in one form or another, and who are you to tell them they are wrong. The answer to that is nobody.
Yeah let’s put an Healing-Tough-Vit amulet and let’s make pvp die once and for all.
Its not close to the stats alone that make someone hard to kill its op abilities and traits in combination with them. If the those things were balanced properly it wouldn’t matter what stats were on the amulets as long as it was the same ammounts. If you never played this game you probably would expect all stats to have equal value in the game ie a proper counter to a defensive build using a proposed amulet you are making fun of would be a glass cannon build. But because this game is so poorly designed glass cannons really aren’t vialbe! Congrats on proving what an unbalanced game this is! Yes we cant introduce more amulets because we failed at making stats equally important and more then the a few build types viable. That is what you are really saying.
(edited by Kwll.1468)
Some of you give way too much credit to the devs. The lack of amulet choices is probably due more to limited resources then hours of research on what is balanced or not balanced. These are the same people that refuse to give a good effort at balancing d/d elementalist bunker specs but yet they know all the stat combinations that are op and can nevah be on amulets!
The top and bottom of a leaderboard is usually far away from 50% w/l ratio because there’s very often more players of lower skill level available for them than of higher skill level.
It should not be like this if the ranking system works correctly. Obviously some people are very good and some are very poor but in general the way the leaderboard looks right now indicates a fairly broken system imo. It should be more condensed toward the middle. There are too many people with absurd winning percentages. Even if you are very good if you are matched up against other good teams it will be a struggle to win more then 60-70% of the time and thats is you are literally among the very very best. Some pretty good teams would be lucky to win 50% if they were facing other quality premades most of the time.
(edited by Kwll.1468)
Shouldn’t we be seeing win/loss ratios much closer to 50% if match making is working properly? In a good rating match/making system teams should eventually end up at 50/50 win/loss ratio once they hit their appropriate level of competition.
So basically if wins/losses were reset and ratings had already been established we should be seeing more teams closer to 50% win/loss rather than the 65-75% we are seeing.
With people not in top 1000 still posting about facing teams in top 25, it makes me think match making is not working very well.
and to add, a lot of the win/loss % are likely even a bit lower due to people who solo queue in addition to team play. So in reality the average is probably closer to 75-80% if you took out solo queue matches.
Matchmaking is in fact not working that well. What you have is premades rolling up there records against pugs much more often then not. Also, there are people gaming the system and leaving games its may not be a ton but there are some.
Billy, believe it or not, they would probably tell you something like this is basically in place now but that the size of player base and the ammount of players on at any given time hampers its ability to work optimally since the system only waits a little bit to find the appropriate opponents and then just throws you in with the closest “best fit” regardless of how ludicrous it might be.
