What render sampling do you have set? Is depth blur enabled? Are you using external or video card controller software for graphics setting or application supported only?
(just curious)
It has been suggested this might be a driver/module crash. Check your event log for corresponding events. Post if any results found please.
Please check and pat your CPU and GPU temps while your comp runs idle, then while downloading/patching/paying… Hopefully before you get to crash. Post both temps. If you are overheating, this could happen, before you question it, try it and post first lol.
Here is a nice free software if you don’t have one to test this:
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html
For future, or if you have a friend who plays, you can copy the ~17.5gb gw2.dat file (uncorrupted and working of course) and make an external backup of it. When you get corrupted, just paste this one back in overwriting the broken one. This will save you the effort of having to redownload over and over again.
Also, please check your event viewer logs and see if any items correspond with these crashes. Post if you find anything.
Always run as admin… Just in case lol.
What error are you getting? What part of the event are you getting at? Was there anything specific (actions, etc) you did prior to this error that may have caused it?
Telling someone to fix something, but not telling what it is, doesn’t help anyone.
There were other threads regarding this issue around. I can’t remember any specific fix for it, but if you go back some pages (or search if it works for you), you may find a few threads with some suggestions or a dev post.
Also, make sure that everything is typed exactly correct… I know it sounds silly, but sometimes it’s one character that was overlooked.
Make sure you are running the installer as administrator. If that doesn’t help, you could try changing your DNS.
Or, run msconfig, disable all startup programs, restart computer, then run the installer/client as admin. You can re-enable after by repeating the steps. If this does help, you may need to test this again, but enable only one program at a time and restart, then test again. Do this until it breaks again. You may have a program conflict.
If those don’t help, please post your complete system specs and what kind of Internet you are on, private/home or public/university.
If you don’t have a log specifically named crash, look for the arenanet.log.
2 possible fixes, Anet recommends waiting 10-20 minutes for the alternate downloader to kick in, but some have mentioned that theirs took a lot longer (overnight, plus a few hours more). Or you could try changing the language in the top right corner to French or German (not Spanish), wait for download to compete, then switch back to default.
Post back if this helped or not.
What MBP do you have, which specs in specific? Are you playing wireless or wired? If wireless, are you on a dual band router? Are you running any antivirus or firewall softwares?
Also, the next time you have this issue, open your console (/applications/utilities) and check for any errors or network messages. Watch for Mac address changes or anything else about your Internet connection.
Please post back with this info.
(I used to have a similar issue at random intervals, so trying to narrow down your specific problem. Tick, post your answers too, if you’d like.)
Try this, (it will be a long post, I’m posting a complete list so you won’t have to wait for a reply). Start with step 4, if nothing, try 5. If you still aren’t working, start from 1 and work through till the end. Please post back what fixed it for you. If nothing works either post you complete system specs here or us, or file a ticket and hen let us know what your fix was.
1.) run software update to ensure all drivers and os are up to date.
2.) try repairing disk permissions via Disk Utility first. Then…
3.) repair the client install
Open Terminal
Type the following:
/applications/guild\ wars\ 2.app/contents/MacOS/cider —use-dos-cwd C:Gw2 -- C:\\GW2\\GW2.exe -repair
You can copy and paste that in, but (check the dash) you must change the dash before the word USE or this will fail the forum shows an em dash (—), but it is supposed to be 2 consecutive en dashes (-). Run it and let it go until finished. FYI if you type the command yourself or paste it, they are 2 dashes (-) side by side… I’m noticing one sometimes looks like an em dash… It’s 2 en dashes though. (the dash before USE is 2 regular dashes)… Reiterated due to previous confusion about that dash on these forums.
4.)Perhaps after doing that, if it doesn’t work, you can try to delete the contents of the gw2 data folder, it’s a pain to get to the right one: this step is a general fix for many tp and graphics issues, even without the previous steps however, it will lose all saved login/password and in-game settings.
Mine is located under the hidden Library folder (navigate using finder, do not use spotlight to search)
/[yourharddrivename]/users/[yourusername]/library/application support/guild wars 2
You may want to copy/paste this folder to your desktop as a temporary back up, just in case.
Delete the contents of that specific folder (you should see files like this contained within “config, dyndata.dat, user.reg, userdef.reg, and folders p_drive and wineserver…namestuff…loca..[long name]” just to list a few), then re-run the client..
~~Your folder is probably hidden (as is the default). Hidden folders display as greyed out text and icons. I found this after googling:
http://m.wikihow.com/See-Hidden-Folders-on-Mac-OS-X-and-Other-Recent-Models
You can also try holding alt while clicking "GO " in the finder menu bar unhide the correct Library folder, continue holding alt and click on Library (if you release the alt/option key, “library” will disappear. At least the link has visuals for you. Hope it helps.
5.) check support.mac.com for instructions on how to reset your pram and smc.
6.) If none of this works, check the sticky and submit a ticket, then please come back here and report the fix that worked for you.
You may need to check your modem/router and check your firewall and security settings, it’s possible you have ports blocked. Or even your antivirus/firewall software on Mac and windows. I recommended router/modem first since you are having similar issues on both os. Check this link. It recommends port forwarding, but I use QoS without an issue. See error code 42 xx. View the others if still having issues.
https://en.support.guildwars2.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8994/~error-codes
Post back and let us know how you go.
Typically this game needs to run as admin, it is the dev recommended setting. Post back if you have any further issues.
Can you post your system specs and your crash log? (look in my documents/guild wars 2, find arenanet.log or a crash file)
You should post your system specs. Also, you shouldn’t rule out overheating, it could still be the issue. So after you post your system specs, please post your system temps for GPU and CPU after running the game for a few minutes, hopefully just before or around the time the screen goes black.
FYI jamais, in-game reports aren’t responded to. If you need help, please post your system specs also.
Hey kking, the 99% (1 file remaining) issue and the issue the op was having are different problems.
If you posted that, you might have even been given the correct response to it since we’ve helped peeps with that before, including the Anet support staff. (many threads about it)
But I’m glad to hear you got your game running.
If you want to elevate things, file a ticket so you can get personal attention and they can follow up with other avenues so they can pinpoint what exactly the issue may be.
Please post your complete system specs (most important are CPU, GPU, & ram, os too)
Please also post temperatures for your CPU & GPU. I’m looking for 2 sets of temps, 1 after your computer has been idle for a few minutes and (the most important) after your computer has been running gw2 for 10-20. Keep the game running while noting the temps. If you don’t have a monitoring app, this is a nice, free piece of software that also can assist in diagnosing other issues.
Please read this completely! If this doesn’t work, let me know and I’ll post the complete steps in best logical order. (if this doesn’t work, please reply with your complete system specs… Most importantly CPU, GPU, ram)

Awesome! Glad to have helped!
The temps you posted, are those while the system is idle? If so, could you also post a screen while the system has been running gw2 (preferably before the crash)?
Many times when a system is rebooting like that there is a faulty piece of hardware or overheating.
Not really sure what to say. You may want to submit a ticket. And, btw, in-game bug reports are read, but are typically not responded to.
Well that’s good
When you close the client, then re-open, typically, it does not start from the beginning, but it scans the file for a checkpoint and picks up from where it left off, but the display shows 0 again. (if the client or computer crashes or computer shuts down improperly, then it could be an issue)
As for having odd download, let’s see. Are you connected to your modem directly, via wired connection? If you are wireless, try using a cabled connection. (wireless could have interference)
You could still try to disable any antivirus/firewalls temporarily (including on router/modems) just to see if it helps.
Some people also recommend changing your dns under your network settings.
I honestly think that this sometimes occurs when many people are attempting to download at the same time, but I haven’t experienced issues like this since November/December.
Hopefully another will have some thoughts for you as well.
Are you using multiple displays?
The reason we suggested changing resolution is sometimes, it’s possible, to trick it into fixing itself.
Well, that’s great! Let’s hope this could be the fix for Cory also.
Yay! One fixed
I know this hardly seems relevant, but could you post your complete system specs, are you connected to your Internet via wireless or wired, is this a private/home Internet or public/university Internet, do you have any antivirus/firewalls enabled (including any that may be default enabled on your modem/router?
If your processor is M, that means it’s a mobile version GPU. You may actually have dual vid cards, 1 integrated, 1 discrete. If you have 2, you have to tell your computer which to use… I’m not sure if this would cause your specific issue, Ilithis is probably still helping you there since I’m fresh out of ideas lol.
Is this a laptop?
Lol, that was going to be my next question if temps were fine. Glad you figured it out.
I’ll post some troubleshooting steps, start with #4, if it doesn’t help, start from 1. Please read each step completely before attempting… This will be long. Let me know how you both go after this.
1.) run software update to ensure all drivers and os are up to date.
2.) try repairing disk permissions via Disk Utility first. Then…
3.) repair the client install

You may have received your bank upgrade in your in-game mail (if you didn’t directly purchase it on the bank slot), try deleting a few in-game mails, specifically, the ones with envelope icons.
As for connection, I played most of the day yesterday and into the evening (okay, early morning)… Roughly around until 12:30am US server time and I had zero disconnects. The only time I got booted was for a patch update. I experienced a minor lag issue, but I’m not entirely convinced it wasn’t partly due to high population in the new zone and partly that my hubs decided to upload/download stuff while I was playing. I did have a nasty d/c the previous night that forced me to reboot and repair my client after a crash, but it was an isolated incident.
Part of the problem with ISPs is, they can only check the connection local to you, this doesn’t take into account nodes along the way to your connection destination. If a node along your path experiences overload or some other connection issue, it will affect your gameplay. (ex. When Chicago is experiencing a high volume of connections, my latency in game has great potential to sky rocket leading to icky input lag and jumpy/skippy baddies)
Also, playing over wireless connections can cause unforeseen issues to… Issues your ISP can’t really help with. Are you playing wired or wirelessly?
Let me know if you get your bank slot after you check the in-game mail bit.
Try to disable your profile for gw2 and test again. Let us know what you find out.
I personally have not seen this issue on Mac, but keep us updated if it comes back.
Hitsig, you may want to check the temps of your GPU and CPU. Post both temps of your system when running idle and also post those temps after running gw2 for about 15 minutes. Istat has a free widget you could use.
Euforiata, you may want to make sure your game resolution is 1440×900 and test it out.
Open your console and look to see if there are any errors or crash notes associated with your crashes.
You have to click on LAG then it opens and shows Mac instructions.
I was thinking something similar about the full screen, but I was hoping the gw2 folder might help “re-calibrate” gw2 lol.
Yes, please tell us what your system is.
Will think on this a bit more while waiting.
Well, without asking too many questions first I’ll post a few bits to try, then if it doesn’t work… Start answering so we can try to figure it out lol.
Try using command+M. If that doesn’t help:

If not, do you play in full-screen mode or windowed? When you get to the character select screen, can you use esc to get to the options panel and fuss with some graphics settings there? Let us know!
What a bizarre problem, but I’m glad you figured it out Doom! I learned something new today
We don’t get that option, -diag doesn’t work for us.
Here is a way for us to get some of our connection details:
https://en.support.guildwars2.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9245/kw/Lag
There are Mac instructions there.
Otherwise, we don’t have a diagnostic feature.
Well, that was different! Glad you figured out your problem
Ilithis, do you somehow think his file is set to read only? I mean, if he’s running the client as admin and MSE shouldn’t be affecting it, what else could be in your opinion?
He had already uninstalled it before any further troubleshooting could come about lol, so just in case the issue still exists post-install.
I’m sure it has, will keep watch for your update.
I found your issue Boot! You vid card isn’t compatible.
You’re client isn’t passing the self check, that’s why you can’t install.
You shoud post the rest of your system specs to make sure the video card is all you need to upgrade. I can see you’re running on a 32 bit version of windows with only 2 gb of ram (min req ram), but please post your CPU anyway, I’m sure it’s on the min requirement since you have at least 2 cores.
Not really sure if nothing else has changed…. Have you tried deleting the local.dat file under my documents/guild wars 2?
Maybe someone else will join in with suggestions too.
That’s a good idea. Probably way better than a ticket lol ;p
Momma, I don’t think that’s going to fix his issue.
Better video cards!
You shouldn’t need to do that.
Are you running any antivirus/firewall software or anything else that may be blocking access?
But let me know how you go after re-installing. For future, you’ll want to backup gw2.dat so you won’t have to download the whole ~17.5gb file every time.
