hi,

this is a standard tanking /DPS build 0/15/30/20/5

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fUAQBUSBKLcVI/OKicB2HEImCMmxrHKkiME;TEAA2A

its core defense is altruistic healing,
its core mitigation is spamming blind on F1 on kill due to renewed justice (doesnt work on dredge, be carefull)

i haven’t listed any weapons because they don’t matter, you use what is good for you.
the traits that unswappable are: valor30 altruistic healing and honor10 superior aura.

all the rest should be swapped according to the encounter
for example radiance10 can be swapped for inner fire when enemies burn you.
valor 20 can be honorable shield when you have shield, valor 10 should be purity if you don’t use soldier runes (some use soldier runes for condition removal to be more tankish, some use 2*water,2*monk, 2*maj water for extra 40% boon duration to be more group supportive)
honor 20 can be empowering might, when your group need more DPS etc etc…

you will find out what works for you in the game, there is no “must do” guide except " adapt for the content"

another classic tanky build is: 0/0/30/30/10

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fUAQBUSBKLcVIvwJisCiE7BGh/GveoQKyQA;TEAA2A

this one is less on offence but much more on group support due to battle presence (honor 30).
10 points in virtues allow you to take wall of reflection on lower CD, or 50% longer shield of the avenger when needed, ofc in www you take 25% more retaliation for those pesky thieves.

also, read the healway guardian build ( in this forum section) for a different approach for tanking via healing.

I use kind of variation of healway build 0/0/20/30/20 with battle presence and absolute resolution, because I focus on group support rather than tanking.

I use stamina sigils and not endurance because I am poor and cant spend 5golds for each sigil…

http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/guardian/?3|9.1k.h1g.e.1k.hy|b.1n.h1.d.1n.hy|1k.71g.1k.71h.1k.b1h.1k.71g.1k.71h.1k.b1h|2u.0.2u.0.3u.0.1k.68.1k.68.2u.0|0.0.k29.u2ac.k29|e

regarding armors, it is quite a consensus that guardians use knight/soldier/cleric armors and complementary accessories (sometimes slotted with ruby orbs for the crit damage coefficient)
which set exactly? its up to you.
do you want to be more DPS? go knight armor with soldier accessories and ruby orbs.
want to be tanky? soldier armor, knight or cleric accessories.
want to be supportive? cleric armor with soldier or cleric accessories.

I am not a big fan of berserker armor for any class… some people say they can do all content and high level fractals in berserkers, they are probably better players than me…

wouldn’t it be better to have around ~20% crit chance for this extra vigor boon? (vigorous precision) it holds for ~8 seconds each crit and adds up…

this leads to a question;
as unfortunately Anet hasn’t implemented (even if they said that they will in future we don’t know when ) cleric ascended items, will celestial pieces work better with this build rather than soldier?

on the paper, soldier ascended are better than celestial , more toughness, more vitality and more power, but maybe the precision from the celestial items can be efficient in terms of vigor stacking?

you just need to understand when you’ll get hit and be prepared (be more than half health and throw a heal on agony)

regarding the encounter mechanix, I really don’t know, the WIKI is very shallow and doesn’t give you too much information, learning the encounter its really trial and error process.

meditation vs shout vs virtue of resolve

in Guardian

Lalangamena.3694

what is your play focus?
do you need it in WWW?
in sPVP
do you solo roaming or always in group?
fractals?

what is your build? bunker/tanking? healing/support? dps?
this info will affect the answers,
for example, if you mainly solo / DPS, then meditations are for you. (they are offensive)
if you always group , then rune of the soldier+shouts +altruistic healing build is what you want.

my opinion is that virtue of resolve is for passive healing and mainly for the “oh crap” moments when you must use the virtue or you’re dead, because it is on very long CD and while it is on CD you don’t get the passive benefit.
so using it for condition removal is waste.

Mace - feels underpowered

in Guardian

Posted by: Lalangamena.3694

Lalangamena.3694

Mace is good tanking weapon when traited, you can face tank Kohler with Mace/shield ,
the problem is that there is no tanking content…

very few dungeons favor face tanking (for example AC humanoids can be facetanked easily, but if you try to face tank colosus rumbulus or the other rodent, their breath will one shot you; doesn’t matter what you do)

fractals also, are all about range or whack and dodge

every time i read these kind of posts, I wonder if we are playing the same game? is there another guildwars2 franchise?

1) the game I play, the player matters and not the class, the quickest fractal run I ever had was with two rangers and a necro that I picked up on gw2lfg.

2) ranged classes are actually stronger, because they usually live longer.
melee classes can do little more damage but the get all the heat, so you have to revive them more, whil leads to double the lost DPS.

3) dungeons, if you run dungeons as a mindless zerg, yes they can be painful, but if you actually try to communicate with other players and try to play team game. they are quite enjoyable, and have a lot of strategy.
I have never encountered classism for dungeons other than in the forums.

I must say that I miss the CC (control) meta that I like from other games and think that if future dungeons will be built around control rather than fast damage dashing and dodging it will be better. (condition duration gear must be introduced and it should be on par with crit damage and not the silly sill boon duration gear)

lack of trinity is the best thing that happened to MMO genre since it was invented.

4) PVP , I don’t care.

Hi robert,
i think we don’t have one healing profession, we have seven healing professions.

all professions except thief can be built for full party healing, some better, some worse, but they all can be built for healing and damage mitigation.

even rangers can be ‘uber’ party healers when built such way.

like in each zone that occupied by the rizen there will be no t6 nodes.
only when the zone clear you can gather t6 materials.

but, the champions that lead the Orrian army should give a unique nice reward, so the player community will have to chose between t6 materials and champion drops.

empowering might is awesome.
instead of selfishly buff yourself, you buff all your party!

two handed mastery is UBER! one trait affect three weapons! GS, hammer, staff!
nobody else have single trait that affect three weapons!

guardian elites, lol, two of them are one of the best elites in game (renew focus and healing book) and the damage book is ‘OK’, it has very good offensive buffs for your party but you lose all your attacks.
you can stack 25 stacks of might on your group and , 20 seconds of fury+6 seconds of quickness and weakness for all the enemies in 1200 range for the duration of the book…
bottom line all three elites are viable and renew focus is all around “oh kitten- save me” button.

spirit weapons and zeal tree: agree can be revised.

range? guardian is not a ranged class, just get over it.

*to Stroper:
for low levels leveling, from my experience, it doesn’t matter, just get the closest armor to your level, you will replace armors each day, it just if you have same armor level with condition or healing power vs armor with vitality and power take the vitality and power.

vitality can be better than toughness, when you fight condition monsters. conditions do more relative damage, also vitality is linear (x amount of vitality will gain you Nx health) but toughness is always compared to opponent power.

toughness gear also more expensive than vitality (if you craft, you notice that on x0 level you can craft power and vitality for 3 crafting material, while toughness and precision is crafted on x5 levels and require 8 crafting materials)

this game actually punish stationary combat, and encourage mobility.
dodges are good, kiting the mob in little circles is good.
staying in one place is necessary evil that can be sweetened by retaliation. (GS4 symbol and stand your ground shout)
for normal mobs, you can win standing in place, but vs veterans you will have to dodge.

Why bring a thief to dungeons

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Lalangamena.3694

Lalangamena.3694

15 in deadly arts for lotus poison = MUST

shortbow 4= AOE perma poison+ weaknes alone worth the spot.

blast finishers on demand+smoke screen +shadow refuge + scorpion wire
on thief who know his role (i.e. not jumping under the boss legs with dagger/dagger) are invaluable.
10 in trickery for ‘thrill of the crime’ on steal also a great group buff every ~30 seconds.

the problem with (some of the ) thieves is that they think they are uber DPS with dagger/dagger and end up decorating the floor for most of the fights.

Roles? I'm confused..

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Lalangamena.3694

Lalangamena.3694

there are three roles

control, the one who are trying to get attention of the mobs,
you can do it in several ways
-generating aggro: face tanking or kiting
-CC, by non damaging conditions. chill, cripple, immobilize, stun, interrupt, weaken, etc

controllers should be bunkerish, some DPS and decent self heals.

support
since direct healing in this game will not save you , but put a bandage on a broken limb support is mainly via party boons and damage prevention, the more boons you can put on your group for the most of the time, the better support you are.
the more damage you can nullify via blinds/reflections/blocks you are better support
good support also have some control.

DPS
the most common role, damage dealers, the most common mistake that lead to party wipes is that players maximizing damage output, sacrificing survivability ,control and support completely.

good DPS will have some control/support ability or survivability.

To make a long story short, I’m just not really finding my groove in my goal to be a decent Tanker. I am hoping to see if anyone(s) out there can provide me some advice/suggestions on how not to suck at what I want to be.

Race: Sylvari

My stats (at level 36) are:
Attack: 759
Crit%: 25%
Armor: 775
Health: 4,648
Healing Power: 107
Boon Duration: 1%

Here are my Traits:
0/5/10/10/1
Valor Skill: Meditation Mastery
Honor Skill: Writ of Exaltation

Additional Info:
Weapon Preferences: Hammer/Greatsword
Utility Preferences:
1. Signet of Resolve
2. Smite Condition
3. Judge’s Intervention
4. Signet of Judgment
5. Renewed Focus

General Game Style:
As the title suggested, I’m really a newbie when it comes to fighting. I’m no Leeroy Jenkins, but I’m all about the attack with wanton disregard for what’s going on beyond the fighting (i.e. I doubt I could even dodge an attack to save my life…literally…). I have been focusing on any stat upgrades that help my Vitality and Toughness, but I get the feeling that’s not good enough.

Since I am a poorly skilled tactical fighter, I am hoping to put together a build which is Tank-ish in design to allow me to be as much a pain-magnet as possible. I figure if I’m taking most of the abuse, my teammates with far more game-based brain cells than I can focus on defeating the enemy and less on having to revive me every couple minutes.

Since I’ve gotten to love the two-handed weapons, I would prefer to keep one or the other has my main tool of destruction, but I’d be willing to work with other options for my second slot if it would help the cause. Same goes for pretty much everything else as well including stat changes, utilities, armor, and such.

I know I’m probably handing you guys lead and asking for gold, but I am hopeful that this isn’t a hopeless situation.

Thanks in advance.

for level 36

get the highest armor you can find from the following: power>vitality>toughness>precision>healing power>condi

weapons go greatsword and scepter/focus as offhand. you shouldn’t facetank at these levels, better kite with scepter.

for skills:
shelter, hold the line, stand your ground, smite condition, renewed focus.
if you feel that smite condition is not enough, take signet of resolve as healing skill.

with traits 0/5/5/10/5 you should manage better, dont be afraid to use virtues actively and then reset them with renewed focus (10 points in honor for 20% shout recharge)
on level40 when you can get the next trait book, start with 0/15/0/10/5
all your fights should be something like that:

GS3 jump into enemies, GS5 pull them to you, F1- blind them, get might and burn them, GS2 chop them to sushi rolls, if they are not dead, GS4 for symbol and finish them with auto attacks.
as soon as you killed single enemy and virtue of justice is reset spam F1 again.

repeat as necessary.

against veterans:
start the same, but when you used all your GS skills, switch to scepter focus.
scepter 3 imo, roll back, then smite, and run around spamming scepter 1.
if the vet come close and scepter3 still on CD use focus5 .

repeat as necessary..

utilities: use hold the line everytime it is off CD.
use stand your ground vs mobs that like to kick you around (ettins, tramplers, etc)
or if you’re surrounded and all your GS skills on CD.

smite condition if you have more than two damaging conditions etc…

Lalangamena.3694

Looks better to me. I think I’d go scepter or axe instead dagger MH, for range as well as function. Axe1 stacks vulnerability, axe3 is a nice AOE cripple; scepter2 is a nice AOE cripple.

Maybe take out Path of Midnight and put the 10 pts into Curses for Withering Precision (and get your crit chance up to 50ish%). Also, I’m not sure how useful WoC is in PVE – you might actually be better off with Corrosive Poison Cloud (unless you are Asura, in which case Radiation Field is better).

Between With. Prec., Enf. Blood, and CPC/RF, you’ll apply nearly perma-weakness, with some condition duration. Add in the blindness/chills, cripples, vulnerability, and cond. transfer/spread it looks like a pretty nice support build.

Also, on your runes, you may want to swap out Grenth/Ice for 4x Lich or 4x Nightmare. Despite the tooltips, 4x of either of those give 20% cond dur. So, you’d lose 20% of the chill dur. you’d get from Grenth+Ice, but gain 20% on all your conditions, which boosted with food could get you 50-60% cond dur. Depends on the value to you of chill vs all conditions.

is withering precision reliable? 25% of ~50% doesn’t seems much…

but, if it is…
I can ditch off hand dagger (which i took as reliable source of weakness) and take focus, which will give me boon stripping and regen… and chill,,

I chose the main hand dagger for the life siphon and immobilize,
the axe looks like front line weapon (with retaliation etc)

maybe scepter focus is even better than dagger/dagger for dungeons/fractals control?

regarding the runes, the wiki states that only PVP version of these runes (lich or nightmare) give 20% condition duration, can anyone confirm that it is so in PVE also?

It looks more like a DPS build than a CC build.

None of those Spite traits appear to give you any CC. I think it would be better to go for the CC-specific traits elsewhere and then use food/runes to give you the condition duration.

Plague (blind) also would seem to be a better elite for CC than Lich.

ty for the feedback.

how about this build?

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fQAQNAW4YjMah6Zaub8bKAJFPf9kCyHPSRxDTVocA;TsAgyCroEy8j4HbROhkFtMYAyGEA

improved wells and marks, chill on blind, chill on swapping weapon, chill on skills.
well of corruption substitute focus5 for removing boons from opponent.
well of blood on revive (iffy mechanic but useful for tough opponents).
epidemic for group control, i.e CC one mob, then spread the CC on his friends.

not sure whether carrion (DPS) cleric (support) or soldier (tank) gear is better for it?
is the karma vendor armor condition damage/precision/toughness any good? i read that Necros need vitality over toughness.

I am looking for a PVE build (dungeons and fractals) for necromancer that can provide an added value to the group which is not DPS, mainly via CC, some healing and combo fields.

I have seen the chillomancers builds which are nice for controlling the environment, and i like dark fields (i think they called wells) which are perfect for group support… leeching arrows and area blindness FTW
and I don’t like minions.

and i want to combine them…

I tried to theorycraft this build:

30/0/10/30/0 with staff for long range and dagger/dagger for short range…
the 30 in “spite” mainly for the condition duration.
with three wells as utilities or epidemic instead of one well…

but i am not sure in this build, as i want to have “transfusion” but cant find a place for it in the build…

so any real builds are welcomed

Lalangamena.3694

I am necroing this thread to discuss staff again.

attack1- short range cone AOE hit up to five targets. could be range 900 instead of 600 to make it apart with thief shortbow 1 (3/5)

attack3- damage symbol with swiftness, can be traited to extend duration, radius and heal. (4/5)
attack4- self root that gives 15 stacks of might to all allies and heals them if not interrupted (5/5)- THE single skill that people use staff for.
attack5- short duration barrier with knock back. could be better if not the long cast.
very hard to place correctly in the middle of a fight, either the opponent passed the line or haven’t reached the barrier but the duration is over. (3/5)

now attack2- is the skill i have the most issues with…

-the movement speed is very slow, people complain about scepter one, but staff two is so slow you really cant hit anything that moved two steps away…
- half of the time the orb simply passes the target without doing any damage.
-orb of light explosion – in order to do this effectively you have to actually watch… the ….orb….. slowly….. float … (not doing anything else you can do) to detonate it in the exact spot for a huge 240 radius … which is one person… and then they put 15 seconds CD on the skill… (1/5) in my book…

TLDR:
the point of this post is how do you use staff 2 ? i need help with this skill
any tips that can make it useful?

Never realized scepter is soooooo broken!!

in Guardian

scepter is fine, not perfect but fine.

scepter one is boss/kiting skill high frequency medium damage bolt, long range proc plenty crits
scepter two is long range, high damage, low radius AOE, good for stationary objects or controlled enemy, also proc plenty crits.
scepter three is low CD immobilize+invulnerability. kiting or chasing skill,

there is a high level of synergy between scepter skills. it is for:
1) kiting
2) chasing
3) immobilized single target.

can it be better? yes
how?
smite can be a symbol
attack one can be ‘homing’ attack that will hit moving enemy as long as it is in reach.

if it was like this, scepter/focus would be my main set never leaving my skill bar.

it is not “soooooooo broken”… just situational as most of guardian weapons

ok

why the 5 in valor?
if you invest in radiance line you should invest in valor fully, or losing synergy.
if you don’t care about crit damage, why invest 5 point there?

also, you take the right hand strength, but use weak one hand weapon and GS.
if you take one hand strength, you should build around sword or mace.

same with honor line, you use GS but dont take two handed mastery?
also pure of voice is not “that” good currently, it can be worth when it will work as intended.

it feels like you are trying to stretch yourself to do lots of things at the same time,
have high crit but low crit damage, use GS but on high CD, support and remove conditions from allies but no investment in boon duration while still investing heavy into shouts, trying to be tank with dolyak signet but have no toughness, use shouts AND signets effectively etc, etc

it is impossible to do it all,
at the best we can do two out of three,
we can DPS and support with one build, we can DPS and face tank with another build, we can soak and support with third build, but we cant have build that does all three at the same level. (also two handed tanking with hammer differs from one handed tanking with mace, just like GS DPS build differs from right hand single weapon DPS)

3) re-curve precision so it will be capped at 30% on level 80 , 50% with fury.
4) re balance sigils and consumables proc around new precision
5) add healing power on existing ascended jewelry and make ascended items to have exactly the same stats as exotic but with infusion slot for agony resistance only
6) allow heals to crit
7) allow conditions to crit (burn, bleed, poison)
8) don’t ever ever implement ascended armor and weapons or any other higher stat gear.
9) add more structured PVP map types i.e. capture the flag, lunatic inquisition aka last man standing, etc etc
10) increase CC duration (cripple, immobilize, chill, stun) in PVE instead of nerfing dungeon encounters, people should meta game around control rather than DPS race.
11) remove completely magic find or make it average evenly for each member of the group i.e. if in 5 member party one player has 100 magic find, one have 30 magic find and three have zero magic find, the effective magic find on each of the members will be 130/5= 26% magic find. this is only fair.
12) the dragon lieutenant events (undead, frost and shatterer ) should impact the map on failure, if the event is lost the map should be drastically changed until the event is won. the event should not occur more than once per day, loot should reflect the difficulty.
13) when you completed the map, you should see all the events on the map not just the close ones in the vicinity.

What's your opinion on these statistics?

36 silver for 30 minutes is nice but running COF1 with zero MF will give you the same.

the only flaw in this post is that it will make guardians too good… =^.^=
we are already close to perfection in PVE, making us viable in WWW/PVE outside bunker build … or remain in bunker build, but gain mobility and ranged options fixed like in your post will make all other classes obsolete…

the main ‘beauty’ (we can disagree with this word ) of the game is that all classes are flawed, all classes have bad weapons, all classes have useless traits and skills, just as all classes have some "broken’ (as in very good that you must have) skills and traits.

there are classes that have to be fixed before guardians.

saying this, i am not rejecting ANYTHING in the OP.

They dont want the game become trinity aka tank or healer or dps .
they want you use mixed stats

please explain why glass cannon allowed to have trinity DPS stats (berzerkers) on all their gear but support builds are not allowed to have some healing among the power and toughness?

I said it in another post https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Ascended-amulets-and-ascended-items-overall/page/2#post1322969 this reason alone is why they havnt added Power/Healing Power/ Toughness into Ascended. Its way to easy if they did add it for a Regen warrior to actually become an unstoppable force With Signet of Rage and “For Great Justice” a warrior doesnt need to build Precision cause it is given to him.

How would you like to vs a Regen Warrior in WvW? 1v1 you better have a ton of conditions at easy disposal or else you wont be able to kill him. With Melandru runes Conditions lose their effectiveness as well due to massively decreased durations. “Shake it off” also reduces stacking effectiveness. Adding ascended Gear for this would mean a Regen warrior would be almost God like.

dude, regen warrior? put poison on him…

you really don’t answer why is there any ascended gear, your logic can be put in the same manner to berzerker gear,
why should i fight a godlike warrior that can kill me with a single crit?

I have written too many posts, and bug reports to this have simply been ignored. Now that ascended amulets have been released as well, why is there still NO healing ascended gear? You’re STILL missing cleric’s, givers, apothecary’s, and magi’s. Why advertise that you would release amulets for every single type of player yet fail to include even ONE of those item combos…this is getting ridiculous. Why am I being punished for wanting to make a support character? Were these item sets forgotten or completely abandoned? If they are the latter, then why do they still exist in the form of exotic/rare/masterwork armor pieces?

EDIT: Additional missing sets include Rampager’s, Carrion, and Knights’s,

true…

guardians best heal is the dodge roll, scales with all healing power.
with some vigor you can heal ~129+HP every three seconds. no other class can do so much healing, while tanking and DPSing.

I read a lot of comparisons to how eles are good support.

I played ele and ele is quite s.h,i.t-t’y support comparing to guardian. because in order to play ele properly you have to switch attunements all the time, but the passive regen and healing spells are only on water, so if you stay in water you cant DPS or stack boons, if you dps or stack boons, you cant really heal.

the dodge heal is (grandmaster trait “evasive arcana” in arcane tree) on 10 seconds CD in water atunement with very little sources for vigor while guardian dodge heal is only 15 points trait that have no CD and we have almost 100% uptime on vigor (between 5 seconds of vigor on crit to save yourselves shout )

except fury for party (via sharing auras build water 30 + air 10). there is nothing that elementalist can do but guardian cant.

Ascended Knight's Gear

there is a visible lack of Cleric ascended gear,

also this:

But then it really ticks me off that not all stat combinations or quality levels can be crafted. It devalues crafting. As has been highlighted, Ascended gear is effectively killing Jeweller as a craft, as why would people bother crafting Exotic jewellery when it’s not BiS?
This will only extend to armour when they finally introduce the Ascended tier to that unless they allow us to craft Ascended quality gear.
Congratulations ArenaNet, you’re making one major aspect of your game entirely redundant in order to satiate those people who want to chase higher gear tiers.

I just wanted to post exactly the same topic.

I was really looking for cleric ascended items, but nope…

all my support builds revolve around soldier armor and cleric jewelry…

now if I want to advance in fractals I have to go for soldier ascended jewelry which forces me to craft few more full sets of cleric exotic armors…. which is unfair comparing to berzerker or magic find (why there is magic find ascended jewelry and not healing power? are you hinting us something?)
