As I fall into the 35-40 demo, allow me to speak for my brethren that think super adventure box is the most kitten thing I have ever seen in my life.

This is supposed to be a game of epic world vs world pvp.. instead we get hello kitty adventure island.

Character balance needs work, the engineer class is crud, WvW is about as interesting as a game of leap frog.. or watching people jog… and we already have a pointless mini-game; it’s called S-pvp.

My father taught me that you don’t start a new project you finish the last one.

Anet never finishes anything they start, and the fact that our “expansion’s worth of content” is super adventure box,

this,

except the babies part and game of thrones…

I checked the box. It says "Guild" and "Wars"

but I think it was better if they invested this effort to build new fractals ( or god fobid fix the CC in the game… )

AH doesn’t scale with healing power very well. (also it should be renamed to egoistic healing…)

altruistic builds work best with full knight for beginners and knight armor and zerkers trinkets. as eliminating your opponent fast is the best personal defense.

Banners

Lalangamena.3694

simple update of banner skills can solve the issue.

skill1 should have condition component.
skill2 should reflect the banner, currently only discipline give you useful buff.
banner of deference should give protection buff. banner of str should give might.

tactics is also silly as it is redundant with inspiring banners (regen dont stack.)

skill3 the only useful banner skill (as stated by ALbandybefore.)

skill4 should be escape skill (evade or cleansing) rather than charge.

skill5 shouldn’t be just blast finisher it should be knockback.

started ele80 it sucked everywhere, then thief80 it was fine in WWW but sucked in PVE. then engy left it at level 45, then warrior…

thought i found the promised land with warrior as he is awesome but boring, then started mesmer, deleted it before reaching 30

began guardian80 instead and it is my active main since then.
for WWW i play the warrior though, as guardian range is puppies.

I think that the problem is raw damage vs conditions (both damage and CC)
raw damage and straightforward damage prevention classes, are OP.
classes that rely on conditions for damage and CC for prevention are lackluster.

fix conditions and the classes can be balanced.

[PvE only]

Hello. I’d like to play front line support guardian (shouts, boons, heals).
Just got my first 80. Skills and traits seems pretty obvious but I’m very confused about equipment. Myriads of armor sets, upgrade components, trinkets.. I have no idea what to get.

1. Do I need Precision \ Crit? Since heal cannot crit and high damage is not my thing.
2. Do I need Healing power or it’s a waste and it’s better just stack P\T\V?
3. What Runes shall I get? I tkink about Altruism or Monk but not sure.
4. Sigil on Weapons?

Thanks.

1- if you go for altruistic healing with empowering might trait, you will want some crit to proc mights, if not 10%-15% are enough to have the vigor running most of the time.
2- full cleric provide more support and survivability than PVT (soldier) it stacks nicely and dodge heal is 1:1 ratio.
but if you go for altruistic healing empowering might you should get mix of knight/PVT gear because altruistic healing scaling very bad with healing power.

3- you can go 6 altruism or 4 altruism 2 monk, but if you like shouts you should go full boon duration via 2 water, 2 monk, 2 maj water for extra 40% boon duration

4- up to you, some main sigils that used
- life or perception (stacking healing power or stacking perception)
- energy (50% on weapon swap)
- stamina (refill endurance on kill)

this is post whith the build I use

A slew of questions from a new player

in Players Helping Players

Lalangamena.3694

Hi
I havent played mmo´s in ages and the last and only one I played was City of Heroes/Villains.
As such i have some questions I hope to get answered

1. Difference in races? Are some better at some classes or not? Is the difference only story related or is there a reason to go with a specifiq race?

2. Classes. What to choose. I used to play and prefere Blasters in CoH and Corrupters in CoV. Anyone know what I mean and what would be the most like that here?

3. What effect does the choices in the charachter creation do. (background and temper)

4. Is there a real tutorial or is the first mission the tutorial?

Cheers

1- no difference between races in terms of stats or professions.
some racial skills can be very good with certain setup (asura pain inverter with full condition damage for example) but these are very rare and vastly used in niche builds by people who are bored with the standard play.

2- the classes in gw2 are very different from other MMOs, so don’t compare.
for example warior is a high DPS close range glass canon while elementalist most often played as bunker (i.e. PVP tank) rather than ranged DPS.
you should try the classes and switch them until you get a class that you can relate to.
- you have to play each class at least until level 30 before switching to different class.

3- these decisions have effect on your low level personal story it has no effect past level 30 story. i.e. doesn’t really matter at all.

Your perfect patch

Lalangamena.3694

- precision scaling toned down, maximal crit rating available is 30%, (50% with fury)
- conditions and heals allowed to crit according to precision rating.
- all base duration of CC conditions increased:

cripple, chill, immobilize to 10 seconds
daze, stun, blind to 5 seconds

-defiant mechanic reworked: when all stacks of defiant are removed the boss vulnerable to CC for 10 seconds (not unshakable).

- all open world mega boss events reworked.
the bosses are no longer a ‘building’ but mobile creature with threat table and strategy (to make them on par with the Orr temple encounters).

- new fractals added.

Best contexts for using mace?

in Guardian

Posted by: Lalangamena.3694

Lalangamena.3694

I believe its only the last hit of the sword that has 150 in range and when using it at 150 not all three projectiles will hit the opposing player. Most of the times its just one hit out of three. For it to be effecive you need to be closer than 130 to guarantee to hit with all three projectiles.

The first two steps of the mace/sword chain has the same reach.

Mace second step also do considerably more damage then the second step of the sword.

third chain sword is AOE 300 range (hit three opponents)
last mace chain attack is 130 range for single target, on double animation duration.

the comparison between sword to mace in terms of DPS is skewed towards the sword.

Mace is a boss tanking weapon for dungeons.

it is too slow and short to be used effectively in www .

The meta-game revealed!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lalangamena.3694

Lalangamena.3694

agree.

this mainly because crowd control is useless and raw DPS is king of the game.

so the only damage prevention is shifted from CC (as it is in other games) to blocks, two boons and reflection which are mainly available to guardians/mesmers etc

Anet have two ways to fix this:

1) make all classes have some kind of equally working damage prevention mechanic.
—> when i say " equally working" I mean that in comparison between aegis and blind which in theory should be similar, the aegis is far more effective and useful than blind, i.e. they are NOT equally working.

when every profession will have access to block and reflection, it will make the professions equally viable but this will lead to homogenization of all professions and make them dull…

2) the second way is my dream. which is harder to balance, but much better and rewarding.
this is the way that distinguish between good game that lasts years or a game which is a mere flavor of the month.
make CC useful, make CC meaningful!
don’t you see that all the classes that have CC in their design are the weak classes!? (engy, ranger, necro etc)
when CC and smart use of CC will be available, rangers will be welcomed in parties again; for their traps and roots. engineers will be welcomed in parties for the nets and sticky bombs, necroes will be sought and praised for the awesome chills and grab-wells!

immobilization, cripple, chill, they all should last 10 seconds on base duration (before traits, buffs etc)

stun and daze should start from 5 second duration.
knock up and knock down should have stun and daze as after effect.

trash mobs (read: silver mobs) should be taken out of combat by CC, allowing a smart party to kill them one by one.

bosses shouldn’t be defiant and unshakable.
bosses should be perma weakened in five men group.
bosses should be chilled, immobilized, crippled, blinded.

for the sake of all good in MMOs, why the defiant stack re- applied instantly after you used a single CC?
if the group has removed defiant stacks on boss, make it vulnerable to CC for 10 next seconds! because as the situation today:
CC —-—→ doesn’t matter,
removing defiant from bosses —-—> doesn’t matter
smart group play beside finishing others combos —-—> doesn’t matter

all that matters is 1)direct DPS 2) dodge 3) damage prevention via block or reflect.

Lalangamena.3694

I’m not so sure I heard Water Elementalist is the best healer.

Guardian is the best healer, leaving elementalist back in the dust where it belongs.

the 0/0/30/30/10 is a solid tank/healer build.
the only problem is the runes.
healing breeze is on 40 sec CD, slotting condition damage runes for 10 sec vigor every 40 seconds is wrong choice.

with scepter (auto attack and smite) you can get even with 10% crit rate very high vigor uptime due to “vigorous precision” passive trait.

boon duration will be much much better for such build (2*water, 2*monk +2maj water)
or full altruism for people who use more consecrations and meditations instead of shouts, or simply don’t like boon duration runes.

underwater combat is bad due to stupid 3D mob pathing, and underwhelming underwater skills.

they should reward such activity nor coerce it.
I suggested in a different thread to make a kill counter for dungeons and add a reward % (dungeon tokens, karma and XP) for each threshold passed. 75% of the mobs 5% increase, 90% of the mobs 10% increase etc…

its not cleric, and no boon duration on runes, and high condi damage,
(thats why she sticks to mainly spamming F1+3 bow skill. and not using other setup)

apothecary armor on ALL slots, healing power. toughness and condition damage.

30 in defense ,full apothecary armor and accessories and weapon and sigil of life will bring you to the 1600+ healing power.

6*superior runes of undead, converts toughness to more condition damage, plays well with warrior heavy armor, apothecary armor and 30 in defense.

30 in tactics is self explanatory. though I speculate she use the burning arrows trait to get extra 10% damage on bow 3 after she set fire field on F1.

I would use quick breathing and sword/warhorn instead of mace/shield in offhand. as if I already play support, then i should bring more to the table than banner regen , i.e. condition conversion on all allies, free vigor / swiftness to all allies and weakness to enemies via the warhorn etc.

the 10 points in arms is to stack more condition damage, in my first try i though 10 in strength would be better but in order to achieve the high confusion and burning numbers that she claims to have, you need to squeeze every point to condition damage

with this setup, popping pain inverter you can actually obliterate any glass thief before he realize whats going on.

unfortunately, my asuran warrior is too poor to buy all the karka shells for the apothecary armor to test this build in WWW..

earrings are a guild mission rewards.
the ability to get them through too much laurels and too much ectos is again to cater people who refuse to join a guild
{or people whos “laid back liberal” guild of six people spend the time Role Playing separatists and queen Jennah followers in Eebonhawke }

here again, the reward should have been a really cool armor and weapon skin, not stat item for fractals.

I said I don’t understand why ascended items used as reward for dailies, this is a design flaw (IMHO) but there is no grind in that, as you will not get the amulet faster than 20 days (20 from dailies + 10 from monthly) no matter how much time and effort you invest in it…
working family guy who can play for one hour after his kids went to sleep and a college boy on vacation who plays 24/7 both will reach the ascended amulet exactly at the same time.

What is your definition of grind?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lalangamena.3694

Lalangamena.3694

Grind is farming furbolgs for weeks for their feathers and beads just to add five reputation points until you get 21K

Grind is trying to reach PVP rank 11 and up farming warsong gulch over and over again for 10 hours a day (8 work and 6 sleepeat etc)

Grind is trying to level back above lvl 62 in KO doing harpies packs and these skeletal knights over and over again for days, after you got killed and lost XP. (that what we did ten years ago)

Grind is trying to get the exact first age legendary sword that its legacies will match your Minstrel virtues and then level it up by farming and deconstructing worse legendary swords…

Grind … is to do boring repetitive things that you forced to do in order to achieve gaming goal that will allow you to progress in game .

the only grind that exist in GW2 is legendary weapon grind, and it is NOT mandatory (unless Anet will give legendary weapons better stats than exotics, which will be BIG FAIL).

ascended items are not “grind” they are outcome effect of doing fractals for fun.
rings are very easy to obtain. back takes little more time, its a matter of progress.
if you don’t do fractals for fun, you don’t need ascended items.

the ability to purchase ascended rings with dailies, its just for the ego of people who refuse to do fractals but still want to wear ascended items as a status symbol.

the ability to purchase ascended amulets only with dailies, i have no idea why such crooked system was implemented, but there is no real grind in it.

I logon,
I play,
some fractals, some dungeon, some WWW and the daily is completed by itself.

Lockdown banners

Why in the world would you use 4 banners? You may aswell run a signet build. Regeneration does not stack, the regen from one banner is the same received if four are dropped. Some minor stat boosts are hardly worth wasting the other 2-3 slots.

You’ve shot yourself in the foot if you do this.

But for the minority of people who don’t know how to banner, at least make it an option to lock them down, though I think this would be very buggy….

you run several banners for the area coverage in WWW and the banner effect (toughness, crit damage, etc) , and sometimes to ress people. not to stack regens.
also multiple banners is the best source of swiftness for zerg .

so with your suggestion, you will have to run back and forth four times, wasting valuable banner time.

while in current situation your party members pick up the banners and you simply deliver them in a new position.

the fleshreaver aggro radius is very short it will attack only enemies that sit on you (melee range), they will not attack any enemy on pistol range and their attack is very slow.

but, the major bug is that after the fleshreaver despawn, the charges will not accumulate anymore on enemy kills.

I still haven’t seen the discussed build. (also what is this asura skill?)

I am trying to speculate, and the best banner regen support build that I can imagine is this:
http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/warrior/?8.0|9.1k.h6.e.1k.hy|c.1m.h1l.g.1m.ha|1k.71g.1k.71g.1k.71h.1k.71h.1k.b1h.1k.b1h|21l.0.21l.0.31l.0.21l.0.31l.0.2u.0|a2.0.u59b.u59b.0|4r.0|0.0.0.0.0|e

1-since the Achilles heel of the banner build is conditions, I feel like traited warhorn and restorative strength is a must.

2- not sure if conditions converted by warhorn are affected by boon duration. if not. then full set of water runes should be used.
with all cleric gear exotic and ascended cleric accessories (soldier back) which currently hard to achieve due to high price of ascended earrings, the highest healing power achievable is 1444 (+250 full sigil stack), which gives 310 (341 with full sigil stack) health regeneration.

400 regen per tic to allies require 2160 healing power by the formula
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Regeneration

which is not achievable in the game yet.

regarding magi armor.
I try to avoid to have more than one/two pieces of it (back +one more is OK) , because it lacks toughness.
lack of toughness make you go ranged and avoid direct contact, which is the opposite of what we are.

sometimes you must be at back fluffing around with scepter, but we are just better at melee range.

I never tried wearing full magi, but I started slowly farming TA for the nice skin, so i will try its original stats and see how it is before i x-mute it to my clerics.

if you concentrate to one stat, you limit yourself
if you spread too much, you only achieve mediocrity.

the gear you want depend what path you want to go.

do you want to go DPS only? do you want to go tank/DPS?
do you want to go tank/support?

if you haven’t decided a path,
as introduction to a guardian I suggest the classic all a rounder 0/15/30/20/5
decent damage, decent tanking, self healing via AH and group support via damage prevention and utilities (not healing power!) this build is good for hammer play.

gear: knight armor soldier accessories or vice versa.
see how it plays to you.

if you want more the healing path,
you play around 0/0/20/30/20 or 0/0/10/30/30 or 0/0/30/30/10 etc you got the point.

then you go full cleric, or cleric armor and magi accessories, or cleric armor/soldier accessories, knight armor+ cleric accessories etc… etc,

if you don’t intend to have ranged in your alternate set.

tanking weapons are mace/shield in one hand and sword/horn in the other.

mace/shield give you 3 interrupts, 2 blocks and weakness
sword/war-horn gives you gap closer+ immobilization and vigor to your party+weakness to the enemies. if traited also two condition removal on 16 sec CD.

the problem with warhorn is that it collides with shouts its either shouts or warhorn and banner

I run
0/0/20/30/20 setup with cleric armor and soldier accessories. (might change them further to cleric, or knight for more DPS)
boon duration runes. (2*monk, 2*water, 2*major water)

I use the following weapons:
gs, staff, mace/shield, scepter/focus. hammer
I change them per encounter. for dungeons that can be facetanked i use mace/shield.
for fractals I use more GS, if there are many glass cannons and i am only guardian i use staff.
scepter focus stays always as my alternative range setup.
the only set i don’t use is sword/torch.

valor 10 is always retributive armor, valor 20 i switch between honorable shield and defenders flame. (hammer enthusiasts can use glacial heart)

honor 10 is always superior aura, honor 30 is always pure of voice, honor 20 I switch between two handed mastery(for gs and staff), and writ of the merciful (for mace)

virtues 20 is always absolute resolution, virtues 10 i switch between master of consecrations for WOR, improved spirit weapon duration for shield of the avenger, vengeful when have to fight lost of adds, and unscratched contender for ranged fights.

I use either three shouts (hold the line, stand your ground, retreat) or two shouts and WOR or two shouts and shield of the avenger.
this is the best tanking/healing build for me.

it will not have the best DPS in game, tried once to kill the COF1 door , better to send a thief/warrior for this job, but enough to do any open world content and even solo some world champions.

edit:
retributive armor is for vigor, because of boon duration i have almost 100% vigor uptime. heal ~1500 on dodge roll
use either boon duration food or stamina regen food (the one with might on roll, can walk with perma 3 stacks of might just from dodging).

I don’t see any link in the OP to the build that can shout heal 9K and banner regen 400 a tick and block and defy pain at the same time.
I would like to see that build.

some serious thinking and theorycrafting was performed about warrior support and healing, its all here:

http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/70934-supportive-warrior-builds-think-tank/

and here

http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/71682-supportive-warrior-builds-part-ii-numerical-analysis/

nothing is new,
warriors have good group support and the best revive in game.
its a pity that the warrior was hijacked by the “DPS or nothing” mindset.
guardian support and warrior support complete each other.
sometimes I wish this game had raids (10 men??? if shouts and banners could affect more than five people) just to see how support guardian and support warrior work together…

Im seeing the opposite. Ive been getting better loot from fractal chests lately.

this one, ^

since the patch i get at least one core (sometimes two) in the last chest and half the time rare item.
I run zero to 22 (whatever on the boon duration food…) magic find.

Dungeons are difficult for the average player I think

Decent player needs no support in any dungeon.

decent players bring their own support.
the OP was speaking of the “average player”

By correct positioning you mean stacking in melee range so he can’t hit you with his only dangerous skill in path 1?

path 1 is simple, i mean path 2 and three.
by correct positioning i mean, yes stack in corner, and then I rotate my aegises and blocks

Subject Alpha is easy because he use burn condition just before his devastating AOE, burn condition converted to aegis, negating it for the whole group.
every class that is able to convert conditions to boons, like the guardian pure of voice
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Pure_of_Voice
can use it to their advantage.
again, support roles are useful and strong.
