I had given myself a nice weekly budget of 10 euro to spend on this game. I stopped that also until i am sure that mounts are (at the very least) NOT usable in cities. No use investing in a game i don’t want to be in anymore in 2 months.

I honestly hope your romantic expectations will come true… but experience tells me otherwise.

No use in discussing it any further either. Time will have to tell i guess.

Give Blade and Soul a try if you haven’t. I love the windwalking in that game. I think they’re getting a new class pretty soon too. Oh, and they don’t have mounts.

And afk player on a mount… if that’s not immersion breaking then i don’t know what is.

A player with gaudy sparkly pulsing auras all over the place, with nonsense flappy wings on their back and all kinds of footstep effects you can think of while taking all that and coloring it black. That’s immersion breaking for me but I’ve learned to live with the fact that people have bad taste.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to hide mounts. It’d look far more jarring to see people bouncing 100 feet into the air on invisible mounts or Jesus-gliding over large bodies of water.

Even if you don’t like mounts, you can’t just ignore the environment just because you have a vendetta against mounts. These aren’t monkeys pulling a rickshaw or balloon animals tied to your limbs to “float” you about type mounts, they’re organic to the world. You’ll see NPCs inside towns riding them, you’ll see skimmers flying over quicksand pits and bunny hoppers perched on cliff faces and such. If you literally never want to see a mount in GW2, there’s still WvW and PvP.

But as someone who was indifferent to mounts when announced, I’m actually quite hyped for what I’ve seen of them. Why not just give them a chance rather than aggressively guarding a zone of comfort?

It’s always been stated that Elite specs are exclusive to each other. They always occupy the 3rd slot (can’t fit them in the 1 or 2 spec slot) so it’s impossible to blend them.

You could be right, but I guess I should have said “of the ones I’ve seen from the WP stream” cause the descriptions of each spec in the trailer was frustratingly vague. And when I hear the name “Firebrand”, I think somekind of damage or aggressiveness.

As of late, Elementalist’s support was through heals and boons but this round of specs seem to go the opposite direction and punish/rip boons.

Could be wrong though. I bet no one was expecting the Warr’s Spellbreaker. Seems like a PvP nightmare.

Another update. It seems every mastery in POF is tied to mounts. Just heard it from a dev on twitch. Mounts are the new skills. Also they are usable in core content just like gliding.

I bet this will make HoT maps easier to traverse too. I still get frustrated finding places even with all my movement masteries.

The mounts are not speed increases, they are movement skills just like the HOT mastery skills.

From the video it looks to me like a speed increase, of course those could be animation renders rather than actual game play.

Well, rabbit can leap up cliffs, and the raptor can leap over spaces. Not too sure about the other two, one seems to float over everything which might be needed for Lava? Unsure to be honest.

Just saw that Skimmers can traverse quicksand too.

Dyeable mounts! Didn’t even think that would be a thing….

Honestly though, lots of people complained that the HoT maps were difficult to traverse, my guess is mounts are meant to make that traversal a bit more fun. I’m not even a fan of mounts but I can tell they put a lot of work into them and they genuinely look like they aren’t something you can just pass on. Even in the story mission, you need to use a mount to get to the end.

Do you understand what “Core” means? You can cherry pick what you think is relevant all day, but nothing core from paragons is in this game, period. What are paragons known for? Spear throwing and songs/chants. What is not in this game? That.

Well, Guardians do have spear throwing. It’s just underwater. There’s also the Dragonhunter F1 skill that throws a spear with a tether.

Songs/chants, if Shouts aren’t the equivalent, there are other types of skills that are similar:

Chants = Mantras? Not a GW1 player but the concept seems similar. A mantra is something you chant over and over.

Songs = Mesmer has musical abilities in their trident skills.

All in all, why is it so desired to proliferate whole concepts across games? Not saying I wouldn’t want a new class, but in this game, the profession dictates the characters’ skill type while their specializations dictate the characters’ effect. In a non-related example, in City of Heroes, the archetype dictated skill alignment and purpose while their powersets dictated their skill effects (a Defender was a support with offensive blasts, while the Force Field/Energy Blast powerset dictated how they accomplished that). So what does the Paragon do that the other professions cannot or could not with a specialization?

I had 4 tickests but down to 3 now after deciding to get a skin and those are tickets saved over a long time. It seems to work since i so rarely see the skin i chose.

If they wanted exclusivity, they wouldn’t give achievements for completing the set.

But who are the types of players that seek these achievements? I’d say not the average player and likely not the type that even care for each individual skins. You can’t wear all the skins at once so the more skins you have the less likely you’ll be to use any particular skin.

I think that you might have misunderstood my posts. You most definitely misunderstood the part of my post that you quoted.

I was arguing against including anything beyond aesthetics and roleplaying to justify a new playable race because those elements could be added without it.

I’ve also said that it’s up to Anet as to whether the benefits that a new playable race brings is worth the cost. Resources are finite. If resources are spent on one thing then they cannot be spent no something else.

And the last paragraph of what you quoted addresses this. The very point of bringing in more races and lore and visual looks is why a new race is desired and would attract players…so we should avoid adding such features?

And again, the resource argument ad infinitum. If you agree that it’s up to Anet as to whether to add a certain feature or not, then there’s no reason to explain that resources are finite. How is me asking/suggesting a feature be added to the game assuming Anet has infinite resources? And how is you quoting the effort involved in adding such a feature make you more knowledgeable of what features are best to add to the game?

I had already addressed the point of it potentially attracting new players in a previous post. If someone currently has no interest in this game, how is adding Tengu, going to attract players? It’s like if WoW added crocodiles as a playable race. People that haven’t played it yet are unlikely to suddenly start playing.

The finite vs infinite resources probably wasn’t stated by you but by the other person. I’m not arguing what should or shouldn’t be added but about what should and shouldn’t be considered when trying to argue one way or another. I personally don’t care if a new race is added.

I didn’t say “new players”, just players in general. That could be new players, vets, prior players who quit, player who are f2p, etc. Why concern yourself with the viability of a feature with just one subset of player when any of them could put down cash on your product depending on the features it offers?

But the point i was making is, the more robust and intruiging you make the feature, in this case, the amount of detail paid to the race in all its fascets, the stronger your argument IF you ignore how much more attention you attract for the effort.

At some point, we could speculate on ideas to alleviate some of the work involved through work arounds in so far as a simple model swap, which would be boring.

Because it’s not. It’s an addition. Adding a weapon skin to the gemstore isn’t changing the status quo. Adding a new jumping puzzle doesn’t change the status quo. Adding more maps to explore doesn’t change the status quo.

Read what you wrote again. You’ve compared adding new weapon skins (which they do every month or three) to adding a new race (which they have never done).

That’s still not changing the status quo. Adding something new (like gliding) changed the status quo. Adding more of something we have a current variety of, regardless of if they expanded on it in the past or not doesn’t change the requirements of that addition. Its so within the status quo, you’re able to project the necessary elements for it and gauge the the intensity of the needed resources.

You’re not using the term right.

It’s clear that for you it’s a matter of faith that adding a new race is a good business decision; there’s nothing that anyone can say that is going to change your mind. Thus it’s ironic that you’re accusing critics of adhering to some sort of gospel.

Why would you think I can make sound business decisions for a business I don’t have intimate knowledge of and hard numbers for? Do you think you can?

I’m not asking you to make a business decision. I’m suggesting that you consider the economic factors when claiming that this is likely to happen or that it’s going to be good for the game. If you want to opt out of discussing practical considerations, then stop invoking them in your argument and just say, “I’d pay extra for a new race, especially if it was Tengu.”

You literally state me having faith in a business decision contradicts my statements about the opposing arguments. I have made no business decision to contradict what i stated besides saying i want a feature to be added to the game and your arguments regarding resource allocation hinges on what you want vs what other people want. I have no qualms with other people wanting more of something else so not being on board with such additions, but some arguments go further than that.

It’s not a difficult concept to grasp, people want different things to different degrees. As adults, we understand this is everyday life but this is forgotten on the internet for some reason.

The irony is that I’d be on your side: I, too, would like more races in the game. The difference is that I’m open to the possibility that what I want might not be practical, that there are other equally interesting ideas that might make more sense to implement.

I have no qualms agreeing, disagreeing, arguing, critiquing and suggesting. Being civil is simple. If you want to state your piece, don’t think you’ll be immune to criticising. Again, the resource allocation argument amounts to “this is what i want and I’ll put it over what you want”. It’s fine, but ultimately just shuts down actual discussion. Is that what you want? I personally would like to discuss ways to facilitate adding a new race, but the resource allocation argument seems to be at odds with an even critical discussion on the matter.

Another complication that a new race brings, aside from having to re-create all existing armor skins for it, is that it increases the time that it takes to develop new armor skins.

Currently every armor piece requires 30 different, although similar, skins (race x armor weight x gender). A new race would add an additional six skins needed for each new armor piece (36 for a full set). They’ve said that creating armor skins is already resource intensive as it is right now.

Yeah but we should sink more resources into making more armor and faster! It doesn’t matter that a small minority of the players will likely ever wear these armor sets or even pieces either because it’s locked behind content they don’t want to play, some combination of that and RNG, or they simply don’t like the look. It doesn’t matter that it may take upwards of 9 months to make, just pour more resources into it anyways! Because it’s armor!

All I would say is there is just as much onus on you to prove that a new race wouldn’t be an effective selling point as there is on me to prove it would be.

On the contrary, it’s up to those asking for a change to the status quo to show that it’s worth the resources to change it. Especially in this situation, since the goal of threads such as this is to convince ANet to change their plans.

All critics need to do is show that the costs are substantive

No one is asking for a change to the status quo. A change to the status quo is changing what the game offers. Those in this thread are asking for additions. If critics only have to speculate on resource allocation, practically any change outside of balance patches could be argued as too costly and substantive.

Criticism is a good thing, but mainly when it’s not taking itself as gospel (outside of professional subjects).

If you truly believe that a playable race provides so much outside of aesthetics and roleplaying, could you please provide proof?

Aesthetics is the only real proof you need since it is the driving force behind current sales. Either you believe in “fashion wars” or you don’t. If you don’t, then such additions aren’t aimed at you and if you stand by that thought, we should stop bothering with creating new armor as well, just focus all efforts on outfits.

That is the false basis of the resource argument here, that utilizing resources for a certain feature negates efforts for others. That doing such things has no rippling effects and thus those individuals have more insight than other players or the developers themselves if a feature is a good idea or bad.

The fuel of your argument lies with the robustness of the feature itself; i.e. the stronger and more interesting you make said feature, the more effort and resources it would cost. But such an argument ignores other avenues of profit making alts can provide. No one is arguing that adding a new race would take little effort, the meat of the argument here is the worth of such an addition. The opposition to an additional race doesn’t seem to take into account the subjectivity of the argument on both sides but rather one is subjective while the other is objective.

You have that backward.

Not backwards, you’re just misinterpreting my words.

People who say Tengu are unlikely are not assuming out of thin air, but based on past notification of arenanet what content is very ressource heavy and how much of different content we see released. Especially new ingame armors are seldom and far inbetween and this has been confirmed by arenanet that it’s a very ressource heavy aspect since they have to custom make each armor set for 5 different races currently.

I never said people assume things out of thin air. I said:

That is, if the devs decide to put forth resources to make an addition requested by players or players put forth suggestions for additions to content, the playerbase feels entitled to chime in with what is best to put resources toward. You mention how resources are limited, just like anything in existance. What you’re not taking into account is the conjured forethought of how it is or isn’t a good decision. Mind you, I’m not saying it’s bad to have an opinion, it’s just a problem in the process of making suggestions for additional content.

and some feature does not make the cut. Then we have to assume that even a big majority from the playerbase wanted a feature, it must have not made the cost/benefit analysis.

But that isn’t for us to decide. To put it in perspective for you: it was specifically stated new races were not taken off the table.

Just chiming it, would definitely like Tengu so I can finally make a Necro and maybe a Rev. The amount of work isn’t really the point or even the money making potential, it’s if they simply make the decision to add that specific content as features for future additions. Basically, if they thought the demand for mounts was well enough that they could add it to appease their customer base, the same logic applies for other features. So I support the addition of new races. In showing support, the devs can know the effort and time put into such an addition will be well received and worthy of the investment.

The main problem is the mentality of players that, if a feature they aren’t a particular fan of is put in, it takes away from the resources that could go toward something they do want. But EVERY addition is going to be like that. Changes to WvW, well there are people who don’t like or never bother with WvW. Changes to raids, there are still a lot of players who have never entered a raid and some who have absolutely no interest in them. Hopefully that line of logic is easy to follow so you understand my point…

Not all features require the same amount of resources. Some may require more than what they’re worth. Anet could upgrade the game to use DX12 but is it really worth the resources to whatever benefit players gain, if any at all?

Do enough players request such a feature and they are capable of planning for such a change to be made? If so, then by all means. To estimate the worth by assumed required resources is a lot of assuming from a perspective that has little knowledge of the allocation of their resources or the resources themselves. Nothing wrong with that, but its the leap of logic that “it’s taking away resources from X” that isn’t right.

I specifically gave that one because they have already given that kind of info about it.

[Suggestion] Custom Outfits

If it works as an outfit, what’s the difference between buying one of the anet-designed outfits and making one of your own? Maybe the cost is 800 gems instead of 400-700 gems per outfit.

I don’t know if I’d buy any… but almost certainly if I got one for free (say as an account-wide birthday gift) and it turned out well, I imagine I’d be sorely tempted to plunk down the gems for more.

@OP: I imagine ANet has already kicked the idea around a few times. Unless it’s more complicated than we think (and things often are), my bet is that they are just waiting for the right time and the right resources to become available. (Their armor team is probably still finishing up Legendary, so it might be a while.)

I hope so. If they do it like they did the shared inventory slots (1 free with hot) it’s definitely a stepping stone.

While I’m a bigger fan of their outfits and building on its library, i do still enjoy and use armor wardrobe but the wardrobe system (even with transmutation charges) is very limited. Some people like to save armor combos without needing armor taking up slots or an external .doc annotating the look for future use. Me personally, i hate having to re-dye stuff to look how it was on a different set of gear and using different pc/laptops makes it hard to do by eye. Its just a tedious annoyance I’d pay to circumvent.

Also, just being able to swap looks instantly is just way better.

…and it’d still cost charges to lock and alter a custom outfit so if you’re buying charges, this is just more reason to buy charges.

I’d say the OP defines it pretty well. It’s an outfit, custom built by mixing armor skins. So after picking a set of boots, leggings, gloves, shoulders, a chest piece and headgear just like you can do to transmute your armor, you instead lock it into an outfit usable by any character on the account without spending transmutation charges each time.
This is something I’ve wanted for a while, but been too lazy to write up :p

Well, the way i meant to explain it, the custom outfit slot wouldn’t be account wide, but bound by character for the purpose of a) clean coding because race armor exists and if you mix in those culture armor you create a conclict and b) more money for anet (because if you if you appeal to them on a marketing standpoint you’re more likely to be heard).

That isnt to say my idea must be soulbound, I’m just offering my reasoning for suggesting that. If they were account bound instead, it wouldnt make a difference to me as i would have reserved slots for specific characters.

I never considered possibly breaking armor weight for professions. If this were the only way to accomplish that (through custom outfits) thats another way to appeal to the masses.

Would like to gauge the a suggestion that I made in the past and see how relevant it is in the present (although maybe it has been suggested by others and me being off doing job stuff has hindered me from seeing it)…

So, custom outfits. If implemented as I imagine would work like this:

  • You open the gem store and buy a custom outfit, the slot is account bound until you use it on a character and this unlocks an outfit slot labeled #1-#X where X = the amount of custom outfits you have on a particular character.
  • After using a custom outfit slot on a character, in the outfits tab and upon selecting the custom outfit slot you want, you have the option of selecting pieces (head to feet) from your wardrobe.
  • After selecting the parts you want, you choose to lock that armor selection as an outfit in in the #’ed slot. The price is 6 transmutation charges.
  • If you choose to clear your custom outfit slot, it costs 1 transmutation charge to which then you can reselect any armor pieces you have in wardrobe as an outfit again.

The reason I suggest such an addition is, I see ascended armor as a means of replacing character individual armor pieces for account armor pieces but the skins don’t need to transfer. I already use outfits for characters that the outfits fit for, but other characters, their armor skins would be better. Now I could figure out a work-around and just use outfits for X characters and keep the skin available for Y character…or you can get more money out of me with multiple custom outfits I can just create for individual characters and file in whatever armor for a cost.

tl;dr: Custom Outfits would be like savable armor templates that costs gems to unlock, transmutation charges to alter and be soulbound unlocks similar to inventory bag upgrades.

Firstly, I don’t think adding another channel for text will ‘help’ roleplay. If anything, /emote is meant for roleplay and if you can’t get by without seeing /emotes in your chat, I’d like to hear a good reason why.

Secondly, you haven’t suggested any actual additions that aren’t currently in the game. More chatboxes? Why? RP lobby? Nice sentiment, but what about guild halls? Or just joinging a party/alliance and jumping to their map?

I always see these types of suggestions but a huge lack of actual substance. What about character bios? More emote animations? Sittings in chairs and interactive emotes? It’s like the best you guys can do is to simply be acknowledged that you exist rather than being serviced so you try to take up the least amount of space rather than expressing what you truly want.

Your eyes are fine, I suppose, there are players who actually like the outfit system and specific outfits. Myself included. If only the settings were less rudimentary.

Well it is on both players who hate the outfit system and like it that are praising it.

This outfit is just so well deisgned and players would love this type of detailed armors for future design that have this type of special effects like the exosuit.

This is basically almost Legendary Armor level of design though it is sad the holo parts can’t be toggles off and on based on combat stance but guess that is just Legendary Armor exclusive effects.

Well don’t get things confused, I am a supporter of the outfit system. But usually, released outfits will be hammered, not because of how they look, but because people can’t use pieces of it with other armor.

I too bought the combo deal but I likely won’t wear this outfit for a bit until I see fewer people wearing it.

I’d also suggest some “town clothes” esque outfits that NPCs wear as either earnable via some achievement or something or just purchasable in the gemstore, although not sure if the price would be the same as regular outfits since NPC clothes don’t wear any equivalence by race…i.e. you’d have an Asura NPC outfit for 120 gems or something…

This zone/megaserver thing is good.

Im leveling my first character and having a nice time killing world bosses with tons of players at low level areas. It’s nice to see low level maps (early game zones) still crowded and a lot of mid-level maps still being used. This is what I hated most about WoW, you go to previous expansion maps and its all empty, not even the NPCs are there. Just empty maps and I mean a lot of maps with barely 5 players. At least GW2 world feels alive, there are always people around u grouping for events in any map you’re in.

I’d attribute that to an often overlooked feature: dynamic level scaling. Most don’t think about it because once you surpass the actual zone level, trash mobs are literally trash but vets and elites will still be speed bumps at best so that everyone can participate. Even if I’m on a build that demolishes everything non-champ in a low level zone, I tend to hold back when there are more players present if only to make things interesting.

Such a strategy isn’t really possible in most other games without dynamic level scaling and yet you can still feel powerful as kitten in those old zones.

I really LOVE this about GW2!

The races and cultures. I’m trying to think of another modern MMO who goes so far outside the box with their race variety and there aren’t as many as you’d think. But not only are they varied in appearance and animation, but their cultures are obviously expressed (rather than needing to read in-game text to understand them).

Who said anything about open world builds? And who builds for the open world? I build for high pressure situations, and high damage, like those you can face fighting champs. Testing a build specifically for open world PvE is like having new bed sheets and dirtying them with grass stains the same day. Pointless.

Do Silverwastes for an hour, get 35g, buy leather.

There are ways to farm gold to buy leather, even Lake Doric gives you 15-20g/h worth of leather if you have a decent comm and know how to evade DR.

The crisis, isn’t even a crisis.

That’s what people are doing. The problem is, that is a symptom itself, not a solution. People buy leather because it’s easier to farm gold than leather. So what happens when more people do the same? Leather gets more scarce and costly.

I suppose it will reach a critical point, where leather becomes so costly to buy, it’ll be more lucrative to farm (likely when 1 square breaks 3 gold) but the only way to remedy this is to adjust drops or usage.

Being the best MMO I have ever played, sadly at the same time GW2 has without doubt the worst armour sets and the worst variety of armour sets in any game I have played.

Anet really need to take a page or two from elder scrolls and some of the modded elder scrolls armour sets, I feel although the current sets are almost cartoon-ish.

I like the look of those pics you attached (however, it’s just black, black and more drab so maybe add a few more varying pics to make your point stronger?) and ultimately agree with your opinion. I find GW2 armors to be very unappealing and most of the utility of the wardrobe system seems to be for showing prestige pieces rather than making your character actually unique. Every time I see proponents of armor, mixed pieces and “fashion wars”, I laugh a little because the majority don’t care about fashion or even looking that unique. Do you want to look like a unique presence on the battlefield and have the signature portrait that defines your character as an influence in the game? Or do you just want to put on the pieces that show your “fashion wars” dedication (i.e. insert: [gaudy backpiece], [flashy weapon] and [most used body/helm piece 1,2 or 3])? That isn’t to say those gaudy backpieces aren’t useful or the flashy weapon skins are good, but they combine into a massive mess that overpower anything else about a character that can make them unique (although I feel some of the newer legendaries are going in a more complementary direction and feel less overpowering).

Personal rant aside, I feel that one of GW2 strengths is the cause of this particular weakness, particularly speaking, their variety of races and body rigs limits the effectiveness of their armor design. That isn’t to say Anet can’t make good armor for Charr or Asura or the other rigs, it’s just they seem to aim to keep each incarnation of armor similar to every other, likely because if it’d vary too much from one race to another, there would be complaints (who am I kidding? it’s not likely but an inevitability).

Not to state a problem without stating a solution, I feel it can be many fold to help make good looking skins for all races:

1. Stop limiting yourselves. If you have a good armor design for the normal rig but you can’t make it look good on Charr or Asura or male, etc, then just don’t. There are hard limiters on what a character can wear already, adding a few more might be annoying to some but if the product is more good looking skins at a greater frequency, then that’s just a compromise.

2. Don’t listen to the “fashion wars” proponents, and keep making outfits. Because regardless of what they say, the outfits presented, for the most part, look good. Making more grounded armor (I utilize the Arcane Outfit often enough to warrant its purchase as well as the Jungle/Arctic explorer outfit for excursions into their respective environments, I could easily see buying realistic armor or even just NPC town clothes as an outfit) may be better suited for outfits as, how some have already stated, they might seem a bit boring. You can still export certain parts of these realistic armor outfits as pieces if they are varied and unique enough to warrant the effort but even if not, such gear just looks better as a set anyway!

3. As I’ve stated in the past, GW2’s strength in the market is the variety of races (most other games beat it, hands down, on armor design). If you just introduce more races (I’m sure there are plenty who want to play as a Skritt or Kodan or Largos) and make them sufficiently unique in stature, animation and story, people will play them. The difficulty comes in voice acting and of course armor…but if the game had an outfit system so that you can alter the main look + color of your character while also implementing special personal customization features in the makeover kits, that’s all you really need. There are games similarly successful as GW2 with less customization in armor. So you can ask yourself, would you rather just pump out 6-piece sets that the majority are going to despise or complain about anyway as being inferior to other games? Or are you going to play to your strengths and introduce story and culture and allow more freedom for race with some possible (remember the 1. solution to not limit yourself) custom features for them which fewer games have?

Not that ANet has given much lore info on any profession beyond some AMA comments on how magic is passed down and trained. So you’re free to infuse any personality you like into your guardian and just try to keep his/her background and rp within plausible range of the world’s canon.

My thoughts exactly. In fact, if you can create an “evil” Guardian character, please share the bio and explain as that stuff is what I enjoy hearing most about MMO characters. I just love hearing backstory and origins (I had a field day back in City of Heroes where the sky was the limit with your characters) and that tends to be the breadth of how I RP my characters (as of lately).

I just rolled a Guardian myself about 3 or so weeks ago and been mulling over his bio as I leveled him up. I’m aiming at a more morose or “edgy/emo” guardian rather than the your nice and compassionate or religiously strict and law abiding type that a typical guardian/paladin might be. Something like his warband or platoon (depending when a defining event occurs) having died by his fault and from guilt, he keeps their “spirits” alive in weapons he summons (yeah, makes me have to have a Spirit weapon in a slot somewhere at all times) and even though there is no actual connection to their individual life-force, he believes they live through these constructs so much so that he speaks to them like sentient individuals. Still mulling over other personality quirks and demeanor.

Clearly some people do test builds by fighting trash mobs. That should be fine, as long as they don’t expect anyone else to treat the open world as anyone’s testing laboratory.

It’s not up to you to decide what works for someone else for build testing. There are all sorts of worthwhile things to do to practice, which might include working on mobs that give one the most trouble or might include soloing anything at all. It depends on the player.

That sounds different from testing a build. What you’re describing is practicing using a build. Again, I say the best practice in open world is to just play a session. It’s the main way to feel a build’s weak points and understand how and when to execute its strong points.

The reason I say it’s wrong because there is no time-outs. Even if agreed upon by people around you, it’s entirely on yourself expressing your intent, being extremely polite to intrude, showing gratitude when others stop what they’re doing to accommodate your selfish wishes and not being a kitten if no one bends over backwards for you.

…that ‘you’ is in general, not you personally. I just see it as bass ackwards to expect people to not play the game just so one person can test their build in a fashion not intended for open world.

Not only that, but from a logical standpoint, if you got a Cham down to 66% alone before other players jumped in, you should be able to gauge how long it’d take you to finish the rest (the time it took to 66% x3). If you took a Champ down to 10% and others jumped in, you effectively solo’ed it. If you can understand the mobs’ patterns and nullify them while killing them, you’ve accomplished all but what your pride demands, so what is the problem?

Well neither do they. It’s funny these same people expect courtesy, but never want to give it. Especially when it comes to harder content. It’s about practicality. Pften my goal when doing builds and testing them this way is to show that these things ARE solable, especially for the people who always need help.

I don’t want your courtesy. In fact, i usually don’t bother with thx or np for helping or getting help. Just cooperation.

And you’re testing builds wrong. You dont test by fighting a champ, you test by playing a session. The only way to test how an open world pve build functions is to play open world. How else will you know how the build survives in heated odds with multi-champ spawns? Or how tough it is to get allies back on their feet while under fire? Or supporting as many poeple as you can? There are many factors to test and, at some point during a session, you will be alone and that is where you gauge that factor.

You’re trying to advocate being a * for no reason other than you don’t have complete control over others. If you want to test a build, play the game for a couple hours, its not like youre paying for the build by the hour…

Several different opinions in this thread.

Mine: I can agree, OP, but mainly on the prospects of the armor sets lacking good synergy to mix-and-match. Do I want more realism? It couldn’t hurt. Less signature sets? Not necessarily.

Those 2 new pieces (for shoulder and gloves in the gem shop, can’t remember the name atm) seem pretty cool and somewhat flashy but I like the fact they had a clear vision in what they wanted the piece to be/do rather than feeling the need to create a whole set for those 2 pieces to include. They could release a new “tattooed torso” piece with 2-3 tattoo variants that cover chest/back/shoulders and I think that’d be amazing…but then you have the excess brigade who’d want an entire 6-piece set of tattooed body armor which is what slows down the introduction of new skins.

As for outfits, I enjoy them and like that new Ice encased outfit because it kind of fits one of my characters’ theme and looks pretty sleek and form-fitting. We need more outfits like some of the regular clothes you see NPCs wearing. It’s great having spare clothes to swap into on occasions (like if you’re going to a party or relaxing near the water or just doing chores) and makes your characters feel less like a “toon” and more like a person of Tyria.

I do not know how much work there is to do after you have an already completed static 3d mesh for an armor. I said that numerous times now. But I do know that it takes a considerable amount of time to make that static 3d mesh.

Especially if you have to adjust that 3d mesh for every race/gender combination in the game. But we of course know that these 3d meshes already exist for the outfits.

And then people start with things like rigging, different armor types etc which have nothing at all to do with a static 3d mesh.

Just a longshot guess here, but I’m assuming the armor the devs create was specifically designed (as well as retouched and altered after testing) to be modular for a specific armor weight. That has everything to do with rigging and things. Creating a 3d asset isn’t likely the majority of the work and you cannot divorce that aspect (the fitting and testing with other armor pieces, changes to accommodate a more polished look, designing the pieces to fit right in the first place so less changes would be necessary) of armor creation from the entire process.

Also you can right now google for GW2 3D models and find numerous models that were imported, exported, converted etc from the gw2 data, 3d models that now use common filextensions like .obj .3ds .ply. .stl, really everything you want. There is even a program called "3D ripper DX " where you can make an 3D ingame “screenshot” of gw2 and then cut out your character, so you get the 3d model of it that way and then you can do whatever you want, even print it out with an 3d printer.
(I would not recommend using third party software)

But people in this thread are acting like there is some sort of forbidden magic involved with a simple static 3d mesh.

I’ve seen some of the 3d printed stuff from games and it’s cool and all, but hardly polished and requires an artist’s touch to fully realize the model. I don’t think people in the thread are acting like there’s forbidden magic involved, just work, and the creation of the 3d model just might not possibly be (and I’m guessing here) that difficult to do. But you seem to think that it is 65-80% of the work. I’m going to guess that making the 3d model is about 25% of the work.

I also said that I do not believe that the answer that was given, “it’s too hard to do” was correct. We already know that half of the reasosn were wrong when we were told that armor sets in comparison to outfits need to be made for every race/gender.

Right, I don’t believe the “too hard to do” answer either because it’s not too hard, it just might not be cost effective or even smart to do because of the amount of work involved. That doesn’t mean it’s too hard…
