80 warr [Blaze Steelsoul], 80 ele [Blaze Nightstrike], 80 mesmer [Grim Shatterwhirl]
80 guard [Dusk Grimlight], 80 engi [Flintgear]
I played an elementalist to 30 and I think they are possibly the worst class ever made. They are horribad. They do crap damage and die so fast it’s pathetic in any spec other than earth. It’s just not worth the time to play them. Maybe when I get a programable mouse to teach to play the musical of key presses needed to make them not suck, I’ll play her again.
you wont have an accurate opinion on any class till 80; i hated mesmer till 80; now it (ele and ranger) are my favourites
-also gw2 has a 1 button press= 1 action policy; afaik macros go against that
As Elementalist I use Ice Bow skill 4 mainly, then just drop it and continue hitting burrows with Meteor Shower
^ this (except i add in the ice fan if point blank), im always amused when i see someone keep hold of it for auto attacks
Hm, perhaps I’ve been wrong all along then. I’ve probably been fighting too many eles with arcane evasion or whatever that OP trait is called.
This is probably tied into the bug that can delay skill useage after dodging when you have an on-dodge effect (i.e. dodge, try to pop heal, but it won’t come out for like a second).
I wonder if it’s just attack skills, or if this affects things like the guardian’s on-heal roll too.
evasive arcana; and considering its a major grandmaster trait… it isnt really, the only other comparable one (that i can think of) is the ranger one that removes poison and blind on dodge… which is pathetically UP
I would like to see it added to Steam eventually. Until then, it’s not a problem to add it to the Steam Library and launch it through Steam, in order to get the Steam Overlay for easy quick browsing of the forum/website/wiki/etc., ease of Screenshots taking/uploading, and the other things that I like about Steam.
except steam seems to like taking it off of my favourites each time i restart my computer; meaning i have to sift through games to find it
pft; id never kick (or refuse access to a party) by class alone
its amazing how long it takes players to get past the bomb run
You’ll be surprise to see how long it takes some players to get past the flaming boulders on P1. I take any that join my party but it annoys me when they can’t get past that part after the 10+ times, lol. Problem with running with inexperienced PUGs vs experienced players, saves alot of time.
no… no i wouldnt…
half of my p1 runs have a mesmer anyway (i pretty much exclusively PuG)
i would guess… maybe 1 in 10 runs i wait at the end and either the orb (thing) or flames disappear, thats not too bad compared with something like alpha
edit
that alpha mention just made me chuckle
… just did a p2 run (like ten minutes ago); wiped at alpha fight 2, redid it; ended up duoing it with a guardian (because the other three died), the three died again whilst running past the husks (i have absolutely no idea how), so we (the guard and I) had to duo the evolved husk (went surprisingly fast without people aggroing each others golems and trailing them all over the room), had to wait for two of the three that died to un-afk, wp, and run back; they died again at alpha leaving me and the guard to duo it again
(edited by Linguistically Inept.6583)
… this needs to be fixed, real mesmers are easy to see anyway; they attack faster than clones, dodge, heal, use utilities, use weapon skills, move anywhere not straight at you
disappeared whilst downed? its the second one to appear
Besides, who likes to see the nameplate of every ambient creature in the game?
i do, so that by reading it i realise that i have a desire to burn, stab or shoot it
Or you could just do what every1 else seems to do and put one barrel in an unreachable place and then slow walk 5 bombs to the red circles. while watching the bandits try to climb a wall.
^ this
i facepalmed whenever i saw someone dropping kegs all over for no reason
because:
torches take teamwork/coordination
its amazing how long it takes players to get past the bomb run
final boss is annoying (not hard; just annoying)
takes longer than p1/2
well, as a new player, i can say i probably will never divulge that information beforehand. just like every other online game, i know nobody wants to play with noobs. i come from a top 50 wow guild and an 1800 lol elo so i know what happens if you admit to being new. usually i just have the wiki open on my other screen and get along just fine.
theres a difference between noobs and newbs
im absolutely fine running dungeons with newbies; as long as they make it clear that they havent done the path before so i can explain the tricky bits, if someone tries to hide it (even when i specifically ask); then ill get annoyed.
and the gw2 community isnt quite as toxic as wow

i like the asura animation… why didnt you create a norn or human if you liked their animations? o.0
i always sigh in disgust at the ascalon fractal when im on my (asura) mesmer… the charr animations… are just… horrible
sadly D/D in fire does much higher sustained dps. their auto atk is rated at .5 sec per hit instead of 1sec per fireball. if u hit all 3 of ur auto, ur dmg output is approximately 30% higher per atk compared to fireball. ring of fire also has a short cast with a nice fire field and dmg. of course doing it in d/d requires u to be meleeing the boss for all 3 hits on fire1 to hit consistently. which leads to the issue of u having a high chance of getting murder by being up close.
^ percentage is estimated from full glass build switching from zerker staff to zerker d/d. require all trait/gear to remain the same in staff and d/d besides wpn.
that ignores lava font (which is basically a second auto attack) as well as splash/aoe damage
(lightning whip>drakes claw)
Just one thing to say first. Aggro in gw2 is really, really complicated. It factors in things like current hp, armor class, damage, current toughness, and some mobs are definitely attracted by attempted revivals. Drawing aggro doesn’t mean something clear like it does in most games.
Also, I hate to say this, but condition Mesmer is just not very good in pve. The problem is that you have no effective way of stacking conditions. In pvp, it works fine because you can play defensively and whittle someone down. In pve, condition classes will stack up 5-10 bleeds on mobs in the first few seconds and keep them there. Mesmers simply can’t do that.
^ that…ish
condition mesmer sucks in PvE, burn stacks duration; so if theres a guard or ele in your group (who; typically; dont invest in condition duration) they kitten your condition damage, and youll encounter loads of times when your team is hitting condicaps (my zerker mesmer hits 20 bleeds when i have two wardens up due to sharper images, which leaves 5 for the rest of my team… it sucks; but its a minor trait so theres not much i can do about it)
i kind of like rocket and net turrets…
unfortunately very few beginners read these forums
indeed "/ well; i hope atleast one does
I always mention that I haven’t done it before if I do a new dungeon path, but if I put in a post on gw2lfg stating that I’m new to a dungeon, I rarely get an invite or people who want to join my group. I also had people leave me when I said I only did a path once.
I rather not join a group myself because I don’t know if they are ok with newbies. Most people on gw2lfg are looking for experienced players only btw, so I can understand why newbies sometimes don’t say they are new. Harder to find a group and afraid to get kicked.
that sucks "/ im of the opinion that if anyone is going to kick someone else for being new to a certain dungeon then they need to have advertised as ‘experienced only’, anyone else is just being a kitten
but them quitting/kicking you at the start of a run is better than them kicking you/rage quitting in the middle of a run (i had a CoE run with two newbies and three experienced players; one of the newbies rage quit because the necro was making fun of them… which was kind of hard to defend because they were using scepter for everything and refusing to melee alpha – a guard refusing to melee is very… odd -, they either rage quit at being mocked or the necro initiated a vote kick, i only noticed theyd gone after we finished the second alpha fight, got to bjorn, not a great kill (the mesmer -the other newbie) wasnt noticing scales of jormag quickly and wasnt shattering when he retreated to the pylons, we wiped on the final alpha fight -somehow; im not even sure how; its ridiculously easy- necro rage quit after thanking us for ‘a waste of time’, mesmer dissappeared as well so it was left with me (ele) and guard (experienced) against alpha… i wouldve tried duoing it if i had any recording software on my computer… was just a pain, atleast three people got easy tokens -we got three more in a minute or two off of gw2lfg… i forgot why i was typing this… i think it was something to do with the difference between ‘newbies’ and bad players (the -first- guard was both; he was repeatedly told what to do and blatantly ignored us, the mesmer was a newbie; he listened to us and -after a short time- understood the mechanics… the necro… they werent a bad player -although i have no idea why a necro wouldnt go on console; no cleave and shoddy unspammable aoe/cleave- but… they werent nice; and im sure if the team hadnt been fully formed when they joined they wouldve left when they saw two newbies)
What I found useful is to take the initiative and ask my party, “Is this anyone’s first time?” Many beginners have had bad experiences and may be a little gun shy to say it is their first time.
If you take the initiative instead, I’ve found that the newbies are quicker to reply that it indeed is their first time.
i do that occassionally; but it gets tedious typing it out in every party (im extremely lazy xD)
I agree it’s very much appreciated when people mention it is their first time because I don’t mind explaining the mechanics at all – I’m not in a major rush most of the time, and it saves everyone (especially the new player) a lot of frustration.
appreciated; that was the word i was looking for, very apt
What bothers me in pug dungeon runs, as a newbie, is the incivility that I see from a certain segment of players. There is a kind of rage that some people have in-game that I don’t get. Maybe they have run the same content over and over again so many times it’s not fun anymore; or maybe I’m just getting old.
i think its called the ‘online disinhibition effect’
normally my ‘inhibitions’ prevent me from talking to people (im autistic… i loathe talking to people or having people talk to me) yet im fine talking… (typing) online, but it turns a lot of people into jerks =[
.
-though i always (well; since my first dungeon run – CM exp – where once the experienced ‘dungeon master’ of the group found out me and another player were newbies explained everything and the run went off without a hitch) notify my team if im new to a dungeon path, havent done it in a long time (so could be rusty) or havent done it since it was reformed, and havent been kicked out of a group for it yet (still havent done any of arah, acp2-reformed- or acp3 -reformed- though; so i suppose it could change)
edit kitten thats a big WoT, TL;DR; ramblerambleramble
(edited by Linguistically Inept.6583)
please please please mention if its your first time in the dungeon/specified path; i (and no doubt numerous others) are absolutely fine with taking the time to explain bits to you, but will assume you know what to do if you dont mention that its your first time (and thus will get annoyed when you fail at stuff)
if anyone kicks you for saying you’re new in a dungeon then they arent worth playing with.
… sigh… i feel like all my forum threads are minor moans
never on my own (imo; if you ‘carry’ your team through the dungeon then you couldve just soloed the whole thing) but ive been in a number of CoE groups where its been only me and another who know where the dodge button is and how to stay in melee range
i suppose i get ‘carried’ over the CoF p2 magmacite bit because im super lazy, WP and let the others do it >=D
edit
- actually i suppose ive carried people over malrona and the illusion tree in TA, had to solo both from over 50% health a few times
(edited by Linguistically Inept.6583)
nice ‘official’ patch notes… though perhaps i should withhold judgement until all the ninja changes are uncovered
(when i use staff; which is nearly never) i stay in fire, only switching to water/earth if i need to heal/control, air then becomes my ‘filler’ attunement until fire is up (or if enemies are grouped far enough apart for its auto attack to be better than fire1+2)
(when i use scepter; which is nearly never) i stay in air most of the time (because i have barely any condition damage – but rotations are more important than with staff)
(when i use d/d, which is most of the time) i stance dance alot; but air is my auto attack attunement (unless i need a little breathing space; in which case i go for water), pop into fire as soon as its off CD; burning speed>drake breath (if fire grab is off CD)>fire grab (if off CD)>ring of fire(whilst moving slightly to the left or right)>earth attunement (3 might)>EA dodge (6 might)>earthquake (if off CD – 9 might)>churning earth (if off CD – 12 might)> water (if me of the team needs a bit of a top up or cleanse)>lightning>shocking aura>lightning whip>lightning whip>lightning whip>lightning whip
i see no problem with someone using one attunement for the majority of the fight (well… as long as its the right one for their build)
what i consider as bad ele habits:
not using CC when it would be beneficial
not switching to water when people start dying
using blast finishers without combo fields (im appalled at the amount of eles i see who dont use earthquake and churning earth in their ring of fire)
using CC negatively (updraft to spread a group of mobs… gale to punch an enemy out of a group of mobs)
refuses to switch utilities for more appropriate ones
D/D eles who dont carry a staff or scepter for range
D/D / S/D eles who dont carry a focus for projectile defense
claiming conjure fiery greatsword and glyph of elementals are crap elites (they arent; they just need to be thought out when using them) and use terribad racial elites
I’d be very happy if they made a Legendary dagger that changed what it was depending on what attunement we were in. A long flickering flame in fire, bolt of lightning in air, shard of ice in water, and a jagged piece of rock in earth. That i would actually go for. The incinerator is cool, but doesn’t really fit with ele. I’m currently using the Ghastly daggers from AC. I know, those don’t really fit either, but I just love how they look when they glow at night.
Having incinerator change based on your attunement would be serious swag.
Esp if the footprints changed too on attunement. How skittenzy would that be.
-starts dreaming of four elemental dagger legendaries and the eternity-esque fusion-
.
i hate it; fine with the quickness nerf on every other class; but it hurts ranger way too much
working fine for me; as schroedinger mentioned its a melee attack though
(not really intuitive since it is the only primary hand melee attack, and torch is the only secondary melee range skill)
summon duelist>iLeap to immob for volley
into the void to group up for melee cleaving
iLeap/melee range to keep the enemy in the wardens circle
cond removal (if it removes the immob) and teleport skills (even minor ones such as mirror images) can get you/enemies out
As people have already said knights (p/p/t) gear is available from SE/Arah
rabid (prec/tough/condition damage) is available from CM/TA/HotWRabid is Arah/TA/HotW. It’s not found in CM.
you are incorrect.
As people have already said knights (p/p/t) gear is available from SE/Arah

Actually it is in CM, and I’m looking at it right now. He only skipped Arah.
mb; arah is the only dungeon i havent completed; all i knew it had was knights (my favourite prefix)
couldnt you just hide your helmet?
heavy armour headbands dont make much sense to me (then again; neither does the SE LA helm)
yeah southsun is a total joke and a waste of space as it is, something needs to be done. turning the champion karka into a world event with a chest could be a start.
i think the best start would be giving area completion rewards; two exos (lvl 80 area?) would be enough to entice players back
i havent used it much since the buff; but didnt it use to ‘save’ a blast finisher (like churning earth – where you can use it on a field; the field disappears whilst channeling; the the effect still appears at the end of the channel)?
As people have already said knights (p/p/t) gear is available from SE/Arah

There’s a mace that looks like a wrench and Engineers can’t even equip it. That seems almost criminal.
that mace uses the same skin as the toolkit wrench… js…
go play thief; and you’ll realise how ridiculous you are
the main reason players use sword mainhand in PvE is its mesmers only cleave weapon; which is invaluable in dungeons (you could argue that staff/gs has the ability to do the same… but youd be wrong) and has the highest raw damage (although i could be wrong about that; i have no numbers; just what ive observed… i also count offhand damage; which is normally a focus in dungeons for me)
in PvP ileap>blurred frenzy is an easy but effective combo (unless it leaps you into a wall…) that can easily be followed up with a shatter
(edited by Linguistically Inept.6583)
For traits to proc you have to be the source of the aura. Its why leap finishers in fire fields don’t proc but casting fire shield directly does. In this case I like to think of it as the field entity is applying an aura to me for satisfying it’s conditions to do so.
edit: also you should be glad because mesmer ethereal fields can double finisher if you put another field on top of them.
im fairly sure you’re incorrect
if i magnetic grasp>leap into another players fire field i trigger zephyrs boon
if i blast finish into someones ice field (or my water elementals) it triggers zephyrs boon
ive never seen a double finisher with ethereal fields (aside from warr longbow; which is two projectile finishers); and chaos armour doesnt seem to stack duration anyway; so it doesnt matter
i dont think its an oversight that chaos armor doesnt trigger it… but if it did i wouldnt get annoyed so much at mesmers covering up better fields
(edited by Linguistically Inept.6583)
i made a human (male) and i regret it; shouldve made an asura =[
(charr looks good with fire breath/cone of cold -if you think asura is too OTT-; but has horrible animations for everything else -imo-, sylvari elementalists seem odd to me; fire and foliage? human are okay middle ground, norn… well… norn suck.)
kudzu is an amazing legendary (apart from that string thing; which i didnt notice before o.o); i would be going for it if i hadnt already planned to get azureflame on my ranger (blue glow sylvari)
incinerator is the one im going for; the water blade change sucks; drakes claw i never use
(if its equipped in off hand does it still have the same effects?)
To put things in perspective, the incinerator is still way better than the rainbow-pony-shooting shortbow… My ranger is still weeping.
you are right this one sucks the most… unless you are a 8 years old girl ^^
some sylvari and TA armour just doesnt dye the same; its almost impossible to get it consistently looking like the same colour as another piece of armour because they seem to react to light differently (pit fighter and AC HA are different colours with the same dye; but you can use different dyes to make them look the same; some armour just doesnt mix and match dye at all)
(also that armour glows; he isnt standing in a blue light)
(and it applies with any dye; not just celestial or abyss)
(i reset my graphics options to default and it was a lot less noticable; but still caused me to trash some armour pieces)
As for Hounds of Balthazar: It ALWAYS takes the spot of an elite that is beneficial to the party.
On the top of my head, I can think of :
- Elem : elite are either tornado, greatsword or elemental. Tornado isn’t useful in PVE, greatsword is situational and Elemental is extra DPS (fire) or weak tank (earth). That’s why one of my guildies now prefers the golem invocation asura race skill rather than the elemental (same DPS, same tanking ability, no need to change attunement to invoke the right one).- Thief : invoked thiefs = Extra DPS, twirling blades = Extra melee DPS (not sure about the third one, I haven’t unlocked it on my thief yet, but I think it’s a glitched poison buff ?).
- Necro : Plague form isn’t very efficient, Lych form = extra DPS, Elite minion makes only sense when accordingly traited (Minion Master builds).
I think each of these classes can use hounds without removing anything major to the party.
On the other hand, using hound instead of tomes for a guardian or instead of time warp / mass invisibility for a mesmer is majorly detrimental for the party.
i think thieves guild is better that hounds of balth (minus the leap finisher), but havent tested (basilisk venom turns enemies to stone; which bypasses defiant afaik)
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Glyph_of_Elemental
- they have extra effects (unless your friend is capitalising on the absorbtion shield?), recharge faster and last longer
plague is amazing in dungeons; aoe blind spam and massive increase in the ability to take hits (if anything can hit you with all the blind you pump out)
commander tags outside wvw (unless they turned them on to highlight a meta event – which has been useful in describing to newbies where boss events are) make me horribly annoyed
not entering the instance unless youre the party creator seems a bit… well… stupid to me, it makes no difference (unless you’re idiotic enough to try to switch chars… or leave the party before tokens are awarded…), i enter any dungeon that may become contested as soon as i can, whether im party leader or not. And (it hasnt happened to me in particular) ive been in two groups where someone has been kicked to make room for another guild member mid run (once with only two of the offending guild members; once with three)
i also kind of disagree with the ressing part; mainly because you didnt mention how often you can ignore them and just kill something they tagged (ive had so many party members who try ressing me when a mob next to me is like… 5% health)
- and some other situations i dont res in (alpha if the player isnt meleeing-and isnt being targetted by the real aoe and TA-any part with blossoms)
-ele vapor form and mesmers downed decoy annoy me too; players tend to use them when they’re not in danger (ive played with eles who get downed in melee range at alpha -with 4 players around them- and they mist form away from alpha; it doesnt make sense)
i also dont see whats wrong with linking drops inbetween fights (you state that its only the end of the run that players should do it); it takes three keypresses (i>ctrl+mouseclick)
- though i do agree with not in combat
im amazed they havent fixed the instance closing when the owner leaves/changes character
i felt really bad yesterday because i left a group at the end of CoE p3 before we got tokens, and we had time to res the two dead players so im guessing one must have been afk and not skipped the cutscene; i only realised we didnt get tokens when one of the party members started yelling at me over whisper >_<
should not be something that you can just get by doing nothing at all
either im crazy or you fail horribly at logic >.>
i think people object to it being on a third party site and not anets; and rightfully so; if they’re going to talk about future updates it should atleast be officially noted on the forums
id like to see quip/predator affect kits (well… the backpacks/gun/wrench/shield parts as well as the projectiles… i havent seen any videos of an engi with quip; but id be incredibly disappointed if the bomb kit doesnt drop presents)
would make the precursors into something trivial. Something that people would get without really having to try too hard for it.
that made me laugh…
if you think thats trivial then you play wayyyy too much
i can get by when im lagging (quite severely) fine
so agree with cloraform
Problem exists between keyboard and chair
AH; I dont watch those… i dislike listening to people talking xD
they mentioned arc lightning and guardian downed 1 as also being affected
… id rather see frost bow 1 get changed to a jet (if that change is going live) than water blast
wait; what? source please?
+1
undyable parts on armours suck, CoE isnt the only offender
LoS and reflection are perfectly sound strategies. One is (at least in part) using the environment to your advantage, and the other is using skills as they’re designed. I do get what Phandaria is saying and can at least partially agree with the sentiment, but not in regards to the aforementioned strategies. I would probably consider content/mob-skipping to be more in line with “trivializing” content, tbh.
I call them strategies when every class can do the same. When reflection is just for 2 classes, and melee is not for every class, this is not strategy, this is abuse of class advantage. Unbalance, exploiting the content
Several classes have reflects
Just not everyone uses them because they aren’t in the “staple build” for that class… Which pshh.
to elaborate
mesmer (iwarden, feedback and -with a trait- temporal curtain)
guardian (wall of reflection)
ele (magnetic aura and earthfocus4)
engi (the shield skill whose name escapes me)
warr (trait to reflect on block)
ranger (axe 5)
thief (dagger storm)
(not including projectile destroyers)
the only class without a reflect (or projectile block at all) is necro
only mesmer, guard and ele can easily achieve party reflection though
edit kitten #8230; didnt realise there was a second page xD)
you may want to remove that attachment
-snip
very few mobs attack faster than the 1 second that blind takes to be reapplied
-snip-
confusion? you mean that horrible pve condition? you mean theyd appreciate it more than burn and might? more than supporting their allies with condition removal? more than supporting their allies with regen?
- more than that the only way they would be able to trigger confusion is if they’re in range, meaning theyd be hoping that melee’ers (rangers and thieves not going melee is a major annoyance of mine too; especially when a mob targets them and they kite it around everywhere) get hit. its a terrible terrible pve condition. any other field has better projectile finishers
as i pointed out’ most mesmers spam feedback/null field when it does nothing at all; and thats my major annoyance; its not a case of me co-ordinating badly; its a case of them not playing well (most dont even have the glamour confusion trait). the most common scenario is; i use burning speed>a mesmer throws down feedback>i use ring of fire just a millesecond too late
sure its a case of other people not playing how id want them to; but its also a case of them playing badly.
’I’m too lazy to educate them’ – you are incorrect; ive asked people not to spam things unnecessarily before and most of the time ive either been ignored or told i need to ‘l2p’ (laughable), now i cba anymore because its exasperating
-and depressing because i find myself becoming more and more elitist everyday (not that i am elitist; im fine with ‘newbies’ as long as they declare that they havent done the path before and listen, im fine with adventurers; but get annoyed at ones that dont melee at all -ive played with rangers in CoE who stick with a bow at the golems before the rangers when they’re grouped up and im fine with less than optimal runs)
