Best profession for jumping puzzles?

I want to know what everyones opinion is on “who is the best at jumping puzzles”, or “who has the best advantages”.

From what I’ve seen thus far, I have 3 that I think are optimally designed for jumping puzzles.

1. Engineer: Shotgun -> Jump Shot is amazing at avoiding obstacles and jumping large distances. Turrets are great for distracting enemies. An arsenal of pushback skills make us one of the most dangerous opponents in the WvW jumping puzzles.

2. Mesmer: Simply put, access to Portal. You don’t have to worry about screwing up if you set down a portal before a difficult object; just cast the portal where you mess up, and go back and try again (cooldown notwithstanding).

3. Thief: Shadowstep is very niche in use, but can get you past a lot of obstacles like enemies and falling rock areas (such as in Loreclaw Expanse). Using a combination of different stealth abilities to maintain a medium-duration stealth is also useful both in PvE and WvW for avoiding enemies and sneaking passed objectives.

I’ve not played much of the other professions, so I’m not sure what advantages they bring to the table.

Also a Public Service Announcement: AoE Swiftness buffs are a NUISCANCE when you randomly cast them with other players nearby in jumping puzzles. I see so many people (including myself) accidentally overshoot their jumps because a quick boost resulted in them flying twice as far in mid air. That stuff has to stop. Be courteous to other players when you use things like this.

Was Ancient Karka the same as Bubbles?

I’m confused as to whether or not we’ll be seeing a deep sea dragon or not. I heard mentions about “bubbles” and thought for sure that if there was a deep sea dragon, it would have appeared in this event. However, because he didn’t, I’m now wondering if Ancient Karka was in fact “bubbles”.

Bubbles come out of crab mouths, which is kind of what a Karka is.. a big crab.

Thoughts/Opinions?

Those who have the Exotics already will find them Account Bound when the change goes in.

That’s not the answer I was looking for to be honest. If exotic items are supposed to be bind on equip, then I would like it if these became.. bind on equip.. not auto account bound. Now you’re just assuming that my wife who wears light armors, because she only has light armor characters, will at some point need a medium armor exotic.. which is not the case.

Why are exotics dropped from the fractal dungeon automatically soulbound? You can’t do anything with it other than burn or salvage it when you get something that isn’t even in your own armor category.

This is a serious question; I looked at the “Arenanet Team” breakdown thing on the blog, but I’m not sure if any of those pertain directly to classes, and if so – if there are shareholders looking out for the players.

Whenever I look at the profession forums, there are never any responses from ANet staff, and it feels like everyones just yelling down a dark hallway hoping for someone to flip the lightswitch on.

If we don’t have those, can we get them?

I’ve had a weird invis issue as well. I’ve been using anything for blinds (the heal, the.. uhh.. portal one, blinding powder etc) and even though I don’t have a revealed debuff, I won’t go invis. However, I get the “stealth” icon as if I AM stealthed. Submit a report in game like I did.

I’m trying to be patient here; but since I play engi, specifically turrets (let’s face it kits are still kitty-like as it is), I would SERIOUSLY LOVE if possibly the MOST IMPORTANT TURRET TRAIT would function in PvE. It’s on the engi bugs wiki entry, it’s been stated here dozens of times, and not only has there been NO recognition of it from ANet, but they clearly aren’t listening, as it is STILL BROKEN.

Seriously, please fix this trait. It hasn’t worked in PvE since launch, it’s really kitten important, and I have no reason to think that it will be fixed at this point.

Hi Ashley,

I’m trying to do this port test right now, and everytime I put the C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe in quotes, followed by a /clientport 80 – and hit “Apply”, the quotes go away.

It goes from looking like this:
“C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe” /clientport 80

To this:
C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe /clientport 80

Stealth: Noises & Skill Visibility

Do Thieves skills make noises/animate for enemies while they are stealthed (if the skills do not cause unstealth). I was experimenting with cluster bomb + smoke screen earlier, and thought it would be cool for escaping in stealth, but only if the enemy cannot see/hear the commotion I’m causing while stealthed.

So the question then, is can enemy players see/hear skills you use while you are in stealth?

I agree this needs to be sorted but i also think that if you join a group you should follow the leaders strategy etc

There are no positions in the party designated as “leader”, and it’s a problem. One guy starts everything off before someone else can, and now some random guy you invited to fill the empty spot in your group is now the “leader” and holds the trigger to your parties destruction at their pissy little fingertips. Not cool.

Simply put, you are down-leveled, and your stats have hit the ‘cap’ for that down-level.

To put this into a perspective of balance; having a +200 toughness trait on as a down-leveled, level 2 player in a starting area, would make you insanely OP. You should see +200 when you are at 80 for sure, maybe earlier if you are in areas where you aren’t down-leveled and have not exceeded the cap for the area as well.

I understand your resons for it, but thats actually quite not right. Noone here should have the right, to sort out, what needs to be presented and what not.

for example : i have an idea to give some option to Egnineers to play rifle as a ranged weapon (with some kit or weapons swap ect…) but it wont be in the list, i would feel terrible, and it would be the fault of someone’s personal opinion?

The problem is, not only would it not be selected, but propably would shut out the idea for ever !!! Becaue the devs would say, “ah we wont implement that because ppl didnt like it that moch, it didnt made it inside” ….

Leave the selection and categorization to devs, i am sure they are working on forum insanely, just dont show anything…..some of the ideas here might also be on there way.

I wasn’t saying that people should stop submitting ideas. I was simply saying that if people wanted to ask questions, provide suggestions/improvements – on the ideas we’ve already got, just to flesh them out a bit more, that it would be an acceptable response. I never said “cut off on all new ideas!”…

Last night we tried to do a PUG… worst idea in my opinion. Anyways, our elitist person wasn’t even the party leader, but the “guy who started talking to the NPC first”. He got miffed that he died once or twice, quit the party, and the rest of us got kicked out. We were about to fight the 3rd boss :<

Either way though, I’m only running dungeons with my friends from now on.

It never mentions it in the books, and it wouldn’t be weird either way in my opinion. However, I’m curious to know if under the cultural helm (which doesn’t show hair for ANYBODY) if she has hair or not?

Also, do Asura just naturally not grow hair (not all), or is it just the Asuran style to keep it closely shaven?

I would like to see mortar act more like a turret with you as its target instead of this thing that has to be controlled. Currently, every weapon/kit we use effectively is used in melee. This would support that.

Are you saying that you want Mortar to fire on your location? That’s a very interesting way to look at it, lol.

It is bot an unreasonable concept to bring them in line with similar skill sets if you ask me.

I guess I just don’t understand why; if you want to use an auto attack to help with movement, you wouldn’t just use something like the rifle. Why is it wrong for the ‘1’ skill to require ground targeting, but it’s not for the other 4 grenade skills? The beauty of kits is that if they aren’t offering something you need at a given time, you switch to another kit or back to a weapon set to GET that desired utility. It’s not like there’s a CD on grenade kit or anything.

I want more traits to affect Gadgets.

1000 times this. What other professions have an entire traitline that’s only effected by one trait? A lot of the gadgets as they are now are pretty niche in use. I personally love the ‘Personal Battering Ram’, but only in WvW, and only when I’m defending a cliffside that I can push enemies to their deaths on.

Additional things that would be cool to see on gadgets imho, are things like flashier animations, and secondary skills. If you use the main skill (say battering ram), it goes on cooldown, but brings up another skill to use that has it’s own cooldown. Gadgets are pretty 2D as they are, and could use another effect (or perhaps just a passive effect in addition to toolbelt + main skill).

Ah, good point; the healing turret would need to be exempt from this trait! Or, it could have an internal cooldown of say 20 seconds; so you can’t just place turret, pick up, place turret. This way it couldn’t just be used once every 20 seconds, people would still be compelled to lay down their turrets for at least a decent period of time, and they would have the added benefit of a double-heal for themselves (like how the mesmer gets a triple heal).

Turret Kit! The toolbelt skill should be Focus Fire, in some form

I like this idea. It could be something as simple as a 5 second cooldown skill called focus fire, allowing ‘throw wrench’ to find its way onto the toolkit bar. However, I’m not sure how I feel about a turret summoning kit.. if you switch out of the kit, you would (and should) probably end up de-summoning your turrets. If you didn’t, then everyone would have turret kit out.

It’s not a kiting kit, AoE cripple doesn’t do a whole lot for it. Bleeding is fine, but thats not something that could be covered in some other form. The functionality of box-of-nails would still be available during the kit refinement usage anyways~

Games like Lunatics Inquisition and Keg Brawl should have special themed “team gear”. I want to see a ‘Keg Brawl Set’. It doesn’t have to be light/medium/heavy, but can be just one set for all 3 to use (like town clothes). Obviously this shouldn’t be for PvE use, just for town clothes.

It seems to be a common want between most engi’s. Anything that doesn’t change, needs to change. Weapon kits and turrets seem to be a popular target for ‘make these things look different sometimes’. I couldn’t agree more.

Using the example of gasp WoW druid forms; we had the same crappy cat/bear skins for years and they were crap. They finally implemented some good looking ones in WotLK and it was like a breath of fresh life into a boring class.

I wouldn’t want to see our ability to express/customize our characters be delayed for so long just because of the inability to swap out our kit skins and have some race-based turret styles!

I’ve always thought that grenades would be better off working with the same mechanics, except with faster projectile speeds.

I would like to see though;
1. Faster grenade throwing speeds
2. A different ability to replace the flash grenade, OR having it also do damage
3. Freeze Grenade needs a longer chill duration. Maybe 5 seconds.
4. Shrapnel grenade needs more stacks of bleeding, maybe 2.
5. At least one grenade skill with a blast finisher.

Since we’re asking for another melee option already, I would like to see the tool kit be turned into turret support.

I know it’s been suggested many times, but that’s only because people really want it. Engi’s can spent their entire existence only ever using weapon kits, which always look the same. Unlike their semi-close brethren, the conjured weapons of the elementalists, our weapons can be 99.9% permanent. Why shouldn’t they have the option to get unique looks?!

Also, they all look to be either human or charr in nature, but every race can be an engineer!

Hey guys make sure that the general focus is on providing creation “wants”, more than in depth critiquing of each others opinions, especially when it’s about already-in-game skills/behaviors!

Grenades have their use, but it is not the same use as say a ranger with a longbow, a warrior with a rifle – which is something that many engi’s (including myself) would like to see. That’s all I’ll say on the subject since it’s been covered a lot in many other parts of the forum.

I like everyones input on the behavior of turrets. They can really act pretty dumb, and having the ability to either force them to target your target, or force them to target what you TELL them to target would be a massive improvement. I can think of many instances this week, just during the halloween events, where I was like “time to unload on this champion skeleton!” only to throw out my turrets and have them target random stuff around me OTHER than the champion skeleton. Facepalm Turret activated.

A lot of what this thread is for is to generate those ideas and get them out there, so when they say “what kind of things should the Engi get?”, there is a thread out there that a lot of engi-lovers have commented on, that has a lot of insightful and creative ideas. Also, I didn’t suggest the melee condition build, but I certainly won’t tell ANet not to give us a new one because we have one that kind of works the same way.

Variety is the spice of life.

ANYWAYS! Keep em coming with your cool ideas everyone! If you think it fits the Engi as a concept, put them here. I’ll be updating this list until it stops getting any action.

EDIT: Please be adults in this thread. Keep it on topic, don’t let it turn into another pissing contest about whether Engi’s are “good as they are” or “super underpowerered”. That’s not the point of this thread. COME UP WITH COOL IDEAS. Just do it, if you can’t, read this thread to be amused and/or inspired. Don’t come in here trying to start arguments.

+ A reliable (non-RNG) “big item skill” like reflecting walls, group stealth or group stability
+ A pure-DPS Elite skill (I thought Mortar fit this role, since it summons a rifle/flame kit, does damage on landing, and drops some healing stuff/turret ((okay last one isn’t DPS…))
+ Siege Repair abilities
+ Turret customization (both looks ((possibly based on race)) and behavior)
+ Gadget-based Elite skill. We have turrets and potions, no gadgets though!
+ Reliable stability
+ Incorporate more TF2-Engi style turreting as opposed to current incarnation
+ Leg/Helm/Chest/Arms Augment skill tree ideas (shamelessly mine)
+ Make our skills more “oomfy” (visual flare) so that they feel stronger without needing any actual changes to make them stronger
+ Ability to put sigils on our kits
+ Exploding med-kits
+ More large-area utility skills such as walls and Mesmer portals
+ Kit skins (including legendary ones)
+ Hammer added as a weapon set
+ Beefier turrets
+ Less/No Random effects
+ Stealth/Cloaking Device as a utility or weapon skill somewhere
+ Turret cooldown reduction trait
+ Faster turret summoning
+ More choice of sigil usage (we are limited since we only get one weapon set)
+ Make ‘Tool Kit’ support turrets better, and be a more effective melee kit.

Injecting some of my own ideas here. Skill type; “Augments”. Arms, legs, chest and head (chest = healing augment). These are toggles that have both passive boosts, as well as tool kit abilities that use their respective body parts. You can have all 4 toggled at once if you so choose (though many may find it useful to just keep a single augment on their bar).

Augment Helm: Passive: Grants Fury for 10s after each kill. Active “Engage enemy”: Break stun, and grants the next attack a critical for +25% crit damage (1 min CD)

Augment Chest: Passive: Grants regeneration for 10s after every 5 hits. Active: “Shell Shock”: Heals the Engi, setting up a close barrier for 2s to repel/daze physical attackers and reflect projectile attacks.

Augment Legs: Passive: breaks immobilizes/cripples, granting immunity to both effects for 10s (30s internal cooldown). Active: “Thrusters”: Grants the engi swiftness for 15s and breaks immobilizes/cripples.

Augment Arms: Passive: grants ‘might’ for 5s for every attack used (realistically this /could/ be 8 stacks in the best of conditions. Nothing to sneeze at but in no way OP). Active: “Tantrum”: The next 5 attacks cause 2 stacks of bleeding (each), and any melee hits against the engi will trigger knockback against the enemy (5s).

EDIT: Oh, and these will definitely come with some sort of animation on the character. I’m not sure how..

Okay everyone I’ve gone ahead and edited the top post to reflect a summary of all the suggestions so far. I don’t know what “+1” does really, but if it helps increase the visibility of this post, by all means do it!

I’d also like to discuss some of the ideas, because a lot of them are really kitten. I’m glad that so many people are of the same mindset as me, thinking we need to be more engineer and less soldier.

I would like to see a Melee cut that revovles around Condition Damage.

I agree. Right now our current melee option (wrench) is something that I’m in the mindset of thinking should be more turret based than it is. We would need another melee option to even it out. I think that Karast’s suggestion of the Chainsaw would be an excellent idea to do both. Chainsaws cause bleeding, and I’m sure other things that wouldn’t be too good. I’ve always been partial to something like “Giant handheld drill” (dredge inspired?), which might be able to do the same as the chainsaw, except it would be less “Doom” and more “Dig Dug”.

I would like to see a viable long ranged weapon aside from grenade. Being able to use a rifle as a rifle would be nice for example, would much rather a shotgun kit get added to the game with the current rifle abilities and the current rifle abilities to be retooled to resemble a rifle.

The more I read this, the more I start to agree. I LOVE my rifle skills as they are, but they really don’t fit the look (at least on most of the rifles they don’t). Here’s my idea to incorporate yours. Shotgun is now a kit (with a kitten looking shotgun!) Rifle is now a sniper kit. It’s got 1500 range traited, one of the skills allows you to stealth for up to 15 seconds if you are /not/ moving. Firing the weapon doesn’t unstealth you, but does make you half-visible for about half a second. This is the #5 skill and has a 45 second cooldown (non-reducable for balance). Imagine the other skills as you want, but I think this would be a unique way to bring both range and utility into the class in weapon form.

I personally would love to see more and more kits added as time goes on. Mini-gun, drill, golem arms, grenade launcher, all sorts of fun stuff if they played their cards right.

Viable turrets can happen very very easily.

I like turrets a lot, even though they are kinda kitteny. I would only love to see more improvements made though. Take Xocolatl’s idea for example; turrets can be upgraded with something like a wrench whack.

For some reason when you mentioned elite gadget, I imagined how the old mines worked (mine kit) where you could throw out multiple mines. However, this time it would be as an elite, with the knockback and everything – 5 throwable mines with increased damage and knockback would be AMAZING in WvW. Just get rid of the Mortar and call it good!

1. Do not talk about current bugs. Nothing like “we don’t have working deployable turrets!”

Go ahead and post now. This next stuff is just me explaining my personal opinion. Engineers are the embodiment of creativity. Magic, science, nature, experimentation, we use everything and anything to manipulate the world around us, and do so in order to make ourselves a force on the battlefield unmatched by sword or spell. However, the current available skill sets put us more along the lines of “commando/soldier” than they do inventor/engineer.

We have rifles, grenades, bombs, flamethrowers, which are all arguably very “military-ish”. This has been justified by the fact that Charr are the fore-bearers of Tyrian engineering. They invented the technology, they used it to kill the titans that enslaved them. BUT! Asurans are also natural engineers, sylvari are natural scientists, (norn are uh.. connected to all the other races that invent things?), and humans are adaptable enough to learn, practice and develop their own mechanical/alchemical creations.

Spill it! What ideas have you got?

+ A condition melee kit (perhaps the Chainsaw Kit suggested by Karast?)
+ Kits scaling with traits (a classic, but definitely a goodie)
+ Current rifle skills -> Shotgun Kit. New rifle skills instead.
+ Gatling Gun/Minigun Kit + +
+ A reliable (non-RNG) “big item skill” like reflecting walls, group stealth or group stability
+ A pure-DPS elite skill (I thought Mortar fit this role, since it summons a rifle/flame kit, does damage on landing, and drops some healing stuff/turret ((okay last one isn’t DPS…))
+ Siege Repair abilities
+ Turret customization (both looks ((possibly based on race)) and behavior)
+ Gadget-based Elite skill. We have turrets and potions, no gadgets though!
+ Reliable stability
+ Incorporate more TF2-Engi style turreting as opposed to current incarnation
+ Leg/Helm/Chest/Arms Augment skill tree ideas (shamelessly mine)
+ Make our skills more “oomfy” (visual flare) so that they feel stronger without needing any actual changes to make them stronger
+ Ability to put sigils on our kits
+ Exploding med-kits
+ More large-area utility skills such as walls and Mesmer portals
+ Kit skins (including legendary ones)
+ Hammer added as a weapon set
+ Beefier turrets
+ Less/No Random effects
+ Stealth/Cloaking Device as a utility or weapon skill somewhere
+ Turret cooldown reduction trait
+ Faster turret summoning
+ More choice of sigil usage (we are limited since we only get one weapon set)
+ Make ‘Tool Kit’ support turrets better, and be a more effective melee kit.
+ In addition to the post above, a suggestion here that I definitely agree with: “Make tool kit THE turret weapon kit.”
+ More kit mechanisms like Kit Refinement and Speedy Kits
+ Make underwater Engi combat more interesting. Improve underwater kit functionality!
+ Railgun kit. Also, a nail-gun kit that uses improvised tools for attacks.
+ More shotgun weapon skins (so that we don’t look so rifley)
+ Grenades becoming Grenade-kit has made itself visible again!
+ Summonable Multi-function passive-effect proccing backpack. Go go gadget death machine!
+ Smart targetting turrets
+ Improved flamethrower
+ Rifle turret -> Minigun turret & Rocket turret -> Homing missile turret
+ Healing turret that does pulse heals instead of having to pick up/re-summon turret
+ Flamethrower kit comes with a gas mask
+ Pistol skills to animate with both pistols instead of just one
+ Sniper Kit + +
+ The ability to lob grenades down a hill (distance improved by pure falling)
+ More color slot options for goggles
+ Weapon slot modifiers that slightly-modify weapon skills. This is an amazing idea proposed by CriSPeH for an alternative to weapon swapping.
+ Rework pistol to be rewarding, strategic, and powerful in line with weapons other classes enjoy.
+ RPG/Bazooka/Rocket Launcher kit
+ Blunderbuss has multiple shots (repeated attacks)
+ Underwater mines become depth charges

I would just like to put in a few suggestions that others may not be aware of;

1. Turn on the beta-FoV. It helps immensely, especially for us shortie asurans.

2. Big players in the way? Don’t worry about seeing your own character, just keep your camera at a consistent zoom and keep your eyes pointed at the spot on your screen where your character is.

3. Don’t stop for chests, they aren’t worth it.

4. When you get past the pink gears and are wondering “where the hell am I supposed to go now!?” Just run and jump straight forward and land on the gear way down below.

5. Any gears you have to jump on that are standing vertically; don’t run across them, just hop hop hop until you can get off them.

6. Time is a pretty big deal in this race, but there is a point where it’s not THAT big of a deal anymore. Specifically when you start climbing up the pink beams/gears, just take your time (not too much but don’t be in such a hurry that you get careless). Second time you don’t have to worry is after you make the big leap to the lower-gear and run past the U gear.

7. Lightning will strike the clock face on it’s second rotation when you get up there. Another way to look at it is when the green miasma reaches the bottom of the clock-block. It’ll be practically flush with miasma and you now know when the clockface is about to face you, just jump at it.

If you still need some pointers about this; message me in game. Hell if you’re on Yak’s Bend I’ll even go in with you and escort you if I can.

I would just like to point out, that if they decide to keep the zoom that far in the future, they will NEED to give Thieves a huge buff on stealth. I don’t play mine anymore because it’s already kitteny enough, but now that the enemy can see you coming from 15 seconds back, they’ll need to implement a real stealth if they hope to see anyone in WvW/SPvP using the playstyle.

That is to say, I agree with both keeping this range (or at least farther out than our usual), and giving thieves a mid or long duration stealth.

Elite: Tornado

I’ve tried time and again to use Tornado in SPvP on my ele. It’s pretty much worthless (pretty good in the water though). The enemies can run away from it easy, you’re no less squishy in it than you are out of it, and it has an activation time that makes it too clunky to actually use. Is anyone even aware of what their tornado is doing when they add the skills into the wind? Seriously makes me feel kitten for even trying to use it. At least the greater elemental does something useful.

I’m speculating here, but I’m willing to bet they lead to staging areas for either new PvP content or maybe a new Mists-like area that allows one to easily find a group for just about any dungeon!

Then again, it might be another way to get into The Mad King’s Realm but will lead to other seasonal realms throughout the year. Whatever it is, it might come off a really big surprise!

Your second suggestion made me think of the holiday doors in Nightmare Before Christmas. Just thought I’d let you know.

I think those doors may be how we eventually get to new maps in the world. We haven’t been able to get to the other continents, and I imagine that would mean the best way to get to them is to go to these portals. It also has the added benefit of keeping “launch/original” features separate from “things we added over the years”.

But why on earth would NCSoft, a Korean company, want to get rid of Asian elements?

Kind of… doesn’t make sense in my head. Maybe from an investor point of few, but it’s not like Asian themes turn many people off. (inb4 korean grind/anime joke)

I’ll be honest, I’ve played a lot of “asian themed” MMO’s – and by nature they are all kitteny grind fests. Dream of Mirror Online, Silk Road Online, Rapplez, god – so many of them. “Let’s all wear traditional korean and chinese raiments all the time listening to stereotypical asian music and everything looks like the inside of an asian pawn shop!”. It left a bad taste in my mouth. I’m not saying I’m not for Cantha, as I’d love to explore the totality of Tyria at some point. But I am saying that I kind of understand why they would want to steer out of that market. It might also have something to do with that one Panda-pokemon game that came out. Don’t release similar things at the same time as other game developers.

I’d prefer a system either like the one used in DC Universe Online, or Rift. Both are much better. I wouldn’t mind paying for a cash shop item to unlock those slots for my char or account either. Hell I’d even pay like $15-20 for it!

I don’t think we need clutter in the UI. That defeats the purpose of the simplified UI they’ve pioneered (successfully I might add). Things like food only need to be eaten every 30-45 mins, so there’s no real need to put that on a bar. Pets, arguably – could just be set to auto-cast (ctrl + right click them) and have them out at all times unless you don’t want them (just un autocast them). I think the other stuff like karma items are just too frivolous to put on a bar.

TL;DR Nah. We don’t really need it.

Crazy Ping Pong Combo

If Deployable Turrets worked in PvE like it did in SPvP, I would try to master the ping pong combo with explosive turrets. Throw all 4 out in a pattern that will allow the enemy to get caught within a back-forth field of exploding turrets, followed by an overcharged shot to the face. Left right left right, BAM, net, drop the crate and dance.

The rifle was originally intended to be a shotgun. They kept the skills but changed the look of the weapon from shotgun to rifle (some rifles still look like shotguns). Basically we can all blame warriors (the only other rifle wielding class) because if it wasn’t for them, they wouldn’t have changed our shotgun to a rifle.
