Your suggestion is exactly what I was envisioning.

“We have the resources to go in these directions. Which does the community prefer?”

And then you have nobody that can claim that the developer isn’t holding true to the players wishes.

The problem we run into is when it’s a close vote. Something like a Presidential vote where one candidate gets 55% of the vote and the other gets 45%. I don’t think a content decision coming down that close should be acted on just because it barely won. This is about everyone’s entertainment, not the side that just barely has more people voting for it.

this is why i think the beta pop-up would work so well.
For anyone who doesn’t know, it was basically a rating from 1-5, with a series of questions e.g.
was this fun
how would you rate the difficulty
did you feel like you contributed
how much do you feel you have impacted the world
etc with a little box at the end where you could add comments

This way you can get a good idea of how the players actually view the content and make decisions accordingly or not if people are basically split about it.

ps: the questions aren’t accurate I basically paraphrased them from memory

See, now THIS is interesting.
It sounds like, in your opinion, the best solution here would be an avenue upon which we can actually judge the most popular opinion of the community instead of assuming the vocal forum contributors and Reddit community are the voice of the game.
Maybe a platform upon which we could vote for changes in gameplay design?
I like that a lot, actually.

Use the in-game system they used for feed back during the betas, it would work perfectly and would be input from people actually in the game.

@ Op- interesting post and I have wondered this myself.

I think a lot of it might have to do with fear, uncertainty and doubt.
Many people loved the game as it was and when such a change happens so suddenly and unexpectedly, the 3 horsemen run rampant spreading confusion as they go.
The initial silence from the team at Anet and then the infamous post by Chris only added to this.
To the middle-ground type of player the AMA helped to put things in perspective. At least it did for me. I’ll wait and see if/how they make good on what they said though.
I am still playing much the same as ever- there are some things that frustrate me, sure but they will hopefully be fixed before too long.
It is still an awesome game that does so many things right, so yes, I will play.

As others have said- do what you enjoy.
I was put off by the Nov patch too and the fact that Orr is a dead zone now- no pun intended.

Then I decided to finally level my alts and I am having a blast playing all three. All in different maps.
There are players around and nothing has changed that much at all- except that I think people are even nicer than before.

I just avoid LA like the plague and I look into Orr every now and then to see If I can get Balthazar going or not.
The rest of the time is spent happily adventuring

My daughter is turning 7 this year. Is it ok to allow a child to play GW2?
I don’t want to introduce violence to young, but then again she does like the Power Puff girls cartoon and there is a lot of violence in that.

Would be great to duo with someone else, my wife tried EQ 7 years ago and told me to find someone else to play with. lol I guess she isn’t a fan.

So am I ready to share this with my daughter, I though I would have to wait till she was 10 but if it’s considered family entertainment, then I guess I need a second account.

I thinking I will give her my 80 Ranger and I’ll start a new character or vise versa? She would probably like to dress up a new character tho. She will probably like the character select the most.

You got me super excited GraynX

Thanks for the story

My daughter is 5 and she hates any form of violence and she has told me some movies that I thought was fine for her ( Toy Story/ Nemo) is not right for her- strangely she is completely not bothered by violence in GW2- to her it is just a game and she gets what is going on.
So I guess it depends on the child and how they experience things- you will know her best.
If you do get it for her I’m sure she will love character creation

Are all of you incredibly stupid and just want to speak words of hate for no reason or are you all unable to read?

AMA session anyone? Take your whining elsewhere.

Your post contributes what exactly?

In regards to the AMA- I am at least a bit encouraged to see that they acknowledge that the new content fragments the player base and drains player from the open world.

I will be interested to see how they fix this since I don’t think that just adding ascended gear in various other parts of the game will solve this issue. Although I am sure it will indeed help to free people from grinding fractals 24/7

The nature of DE’s demand players and it is getting hard to get anything done in the lower level maps let alone Orr. People need to be able to spread out through out the whole world. Since there are already a lot of suggestion on how to do this- I hope they read the suggestion forums

Morrigan.2809

Interesting post:
I see what you are saying and I agree that the world has incredible depth.
I do feel that more could be done with the characters but I am actually really happy with the traits and skills the way they are.

I do have a suggestion on character development that I would love to see though.
I loved the personal story in the game, I really would not mind if it continued in some way.
This is how I think it might be done
I loved the Orders and their different approaches to the world and I think it would be a nice aspect of character development or growth if they added more Order missions. Now that Zaitan is defeated, the Orders can focus on the remaining dragons and other regions of Tyria..
It would be awesome if you could participate in moving events forward towards the content in new expansions, that way your character is involved in the world in a personal way and it also broadens the scope and lore of the game.

I don’t know how well I explained what I mean but I hope you get what I’m trying to say.

I actually think it was a good AMA and I appreciated the fact that they owned up to mistakes that where made.
It also gives answers so that people can now decide what they want to do.
Ultimately it is up to each player.
Face it, no-one is perfect and the Anet team are just people like you and me, they are not gods.
I am sure that they do want to keep all sorts of players and play-styles happy in the game- they spent years building this world after all.
How possible that will be, remains to be seen.

I don’t know Story books from GW1 since I only recently got it but I have also felt that we need more story in the game.
Since the personal story is very linear I would suggest a variety of Order Missions to choose from. This could be implemented either through your mail/ or as a quest board in your personal instance.
You get to choose which missions you would like to do at which time and preferably with more than one plan of action per mission.
I think it would be great fun and it would also help to flesh out our characters and the role of the Orders much more- I was always disappointed when the story arched away from the Orders.

Well, there’s the thing . . . I don’t just receive pleasure from those things consumerism can get me. I won’t deny they’re pretty fun and I definitely enjoy having spent money on games. (Not just this one.)

On the other hand, I enjoyed learning how to cook a risotto. I enjoyed checking out a renaissance faire. I enjoyed going to visit friends one year for Thanksgiving and basking in their camaraderie. I enjoy my work. I enjoy the appearance of a cleaned and straightened house, along with the smell of fresh laundry. I enjoyed going camping growing up, and earning the right to do so without my parents supervising me.

All of these things require effort, even if it’s not on my part. None of it is “free”.

Edit: Actually, to explain why I say that, the thing about sitting under the tree? I have a tree in my backyard, but I also live in a part of the US where there exist an abomination known as “fire ants”. I could go out there at random and sit under the tree and look at the sky . . . but I would rather go out there after I spread ant killer pellets so I don’t come in with bite sores on my back and legs.

Nice ants comment

You’ve named a handful of things that you enjoy. But there are probably millions of moments in your life just as enjoyable that bring pleasure without requiring ‘work’ (note that it’s not ‘work’ if you enjoy it).

*My point is that from quite a few philosophical standpoints, the ‘all rewards must come from hard work’ is a pretty dubious notion. It’s part of the Protestant work ethic mythology that has been heavily propagandised into American ideology, as well as a few other nations.

I fully accept that many people believe it to be a fundamental aspect of reality, in the same way I fully accept many people believe a deity of their choice is a fundamental aspect of reality.

I don’t accept that people believing it makes it a fact, far from it.*

So what I am getting at with this thread is whether people who have that rather extreme ideological view – ‘all rewards must come from hard work’ – apply it equally to virtual environments or not and if not, why?

I understand what you are saying and I have wondered this myself. My husband and I have discussed this many times.
How it relates to games, I think depends on many things: how the avatar is perceived by the player, the nature of the particular game and also the player’s real world views to some extent.
I think our society has a very hard time freeing themselves of the “nothing comes of nothing” mentality.
People who identify strongly with their in game characters, or invest a lot of time in a game, want to see them grow in one way or another. That is fun to them and it may even take effort, but it is not work.
Some players say that they don’t want to create a second job in a game and yet that is exactly what they end up doing, while other are content to just float around and smell the roses.
How all this may correlate to players real world views, I have no idea. It is an interesting subject.
I just realized I contributed nothing to it

The solution Anet saw fit was to throw precursors at people in a one time event (RNG).
This is not smart- it is extremely stupid and you only have to head over to the crafting forum to see that people with a bankroll are buying them up for cheap and expect fully to control the market in another week.
So stop.

No, I was fully expecting Legendary Armor since it only makes sense.
I did however expect Legendary Armor to have the same stats as Legendary Weapons, which had the same stats as Exotics.
This makes it optional and not a requirement and entirely a matter of vanity and bragging rights. As it should be.

Play the Game for FUN!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Morrigan.2809

Morrigan.2809

If what you find fun is the ability to max out characters and suit them up with maxed out gear and dress them up cosmetically and take them around the world doing stuff, playing with different builds and weapons, then – especially as a casual player – this game can no longer be fun, because in order to have a maxed out (stat-wise) character we’ll have to do nothing but gear grind – which is not what we do for fun.

thank you!
concise and to the point- good luck with getting that across in this tread.

I think the post also sum up an issue with people’s thinking, one I see too in the legendaries.

Note that he considers himself a casual player, and yet he feels he must have ascended items before he is complete. I consider myself pretty hardcore, but even I am in no hurry to chase ascended gear, while vastly cheaper than legends, they are insanely more expensive than exotics.

Is this some kind’ve throwback of “other MMOs” where people assume that they both must and can get the top tier of gear in the shortest time possible?

No- it is about not having to bother with gear ever again.
Also for someone who plays alts and also likes to experiment with different builds, I can tell you that exotics don’t come cheap in those circumstances.

Getting a set of Ascended gear with on my main is not only expensive it is an unspeakable grind. Never mind the alts. Never mind different builds.
I have decided to just go for a Legendary instead, since at least this is a chore I can pick for myself.
Also you might gather from this post “the shortest time possible” is not a factor and no it is not a throwback from other MMO’s it is a result of a stated design philosophy from Anet-
I couldn’t care less about other MMO’s
