Since when is “steampunk” about symmetrical aesthetics? If anything, steampunk tends to the asymmetrical. It looks great on asura too and not just humans.

I was just a detail, really. Whole thing about the medium shoulders being utter crap is that it’s just some bulky armor covering your neck and shoulders while the other variants have some awesome smokestack style meshes.

It’s very refreshing to see an outfit like this for a Thief. It’s simple, not overwhelming, yet it’s still there. The colours go well with the weapons aswell as the fur. A good 9/10.

First one is the steampunk version of a a noble style, second one is something slightly more disgruntled.

Maybe on humans but on charr I thought it was the worst piece, its actually the only se piece I dont use lol Its not even symetrical

But it IS, the worst piece, for the Charr. I’d kill to get the Heavy/Light variant, I actually met an engi having the light pauldrons bought during the time all the shoulder armors had the light mesh.

The problem is that Sorrow’s Embrace medium armors are utter crap compared to their heavy and light variants. Very difficult to do anything steampunkish. Only thing close I could ever do was a royal guard variant of it on a Dishonored style.

Well, that’s Silvari. But I only said that it rocked because it’s a refreshing look. 90% of the Thief community is either with a full set of CoF armor (which I’d just want to hunt down and rip the guy’s organs out with my bare hands), or some human cultural stuff/duelist followed with a hood because they try so hard to become whatever stale Assassin’s Creed / Anime psychopath they idolize. There is much more to that, infact, more potential than any other adventurer class, which is depressing.

Another often underrated stratagem is to exploit their often oversized ego. Make baits, get them to make a choice between leaving for recovery OR finishing the job, you’d be surprised about the number of thieves choosing the latter option just to get completly wrecked when falling for it. Of course, it’s all psychology, and being an Engineer surely does help, but I’m sure that alot of other classes can eventually pull it off, the Guardian, the Warrior, the Mesmer, the Elementalist, and maybee… the Ranger.

How does a thief counter an engineer?

in Engineer

Posted by: MrForz.1953

MrForz.1953

Tricky part is how do most people build. You can strap anything on an engineer. Nowadays your best matchup might be against the said ‘overpowered’ HGH*409 P/P Grenades when using Sword/Dagger, can’t live if you continually rip the boons that actually sustain him but you’ll have to be fast.

The boonless ones, which means.. either turret or gadget based, you’d need to make a first attack in order to know the extent of his skills:

If wielding a Rifle, there are strong chances that it’s a Static Discharge build (Everytime a toolbelt skill is used, you also shoot a burst of electricity) which means that their utility skills are selected in order to have decent damaging / invulnerability-applying toolbelt skills to go with the Static Discharges being thrown at you. Very few defenses, but insane control abilities, one immobilize, one pull, and one knockback on a fairly short cooldown. You must at least dodge the knockback (Overcharged Shot) in order to have the upper hand then go fully aggressive. If you decide to reset the fight, both the engi’s health and the cooldowns will be restored.

If you see Dual Pistols or Pistol Shield without the massive load of boons and Might on top of it, it’s probably a gadget/turret related build. Even without the stacks of might, the runes of the Undead will turn the condition damage into a force to be reckoned with and the use of gadgets instead of the usual elixirs gets the Engi so poorly handle 1vMany, but to literally slaughter nearly anyone in 1v1 if given the chance. The skills to look at are the Net Turret, the Battery Ram, and the Slick Shoes. The bad side is that you can’t really guess on the first sight which requires you to make a first fight, the good side is that he can’t really kill you outright unless you’ve got an oversized ego. Thieves Guild is naturally good against the Net Turret, if you detected the Battery Ram, staying behind the Engineer will take care of it, the Slick Shoes animation can be hard to see but if you detect it, just remain distant until it’s finished.

Now, you’ve noticed that all that information won’t give you the keys on how to slaughter all the engineers until the last, none of these two classes got an ‘I win’ button against eachother and the outcome is measured on who’s the most in control of the situation.

You requested burst rotations, well, we only have one burst rotation which is strapped on the Static Discharge build, throw Net, mash all the damage dealing toolbelt skills, finish with a Blunderbuss and Overcharged Shot to prevent the target from entering into its recovering stance, keep shooting. It takes roughly 20-30s for all the toolbelt skills to be up again, but most of the build users won’t wait for all the skills to be up before shooting again.

I’d like to tell you something.

Bleeds, no matter the number of stacks, can be removed all at once with a single condition cure of any kind. The last duel I’ve made with one of these Pistol/Dagger builds, the Thief wouldn’t harm me AT ALL because I had that pathetic Antidote in the med kit which cures one condition. All the classes pretty much got that kind of skill built somewhere or related to a trait, and they’d just need to pack enough firepower so they get you to make a tactical retreat and they’ll be back to full health with barely any effort and ready to fight you again. The problem is that you might not be at full health if you continue going on, and on, and on.

Hmh, well I thought he’s question was sarcastic and so I replied in an insulting manner. Whatever.

No, I wasn’t sarcastic. I gave very little care to what happened to Thieves specs because the changes barely affect the kind of Engi I play. Even through a fair amount of time PvPing the few encounters I’ve made with Sword Thieves were the same as before, and as I’m boonless by default it’s like trying to extract water from a rock. As much as I know my matchups I only have rough ideas about matchups between other classes. The only thing I’ve seen before the update was a huge amount of complaints about Guardians requiring like 2 DPS specced classes to bring it down. I knew about the change on the Flanking Strike and the Larcenous Strike, now its smallest details…

I’m sure Engies wouldn’t insult you if you didn’t know about the exact mechanics of our gadgets or a couple of often-used bugs.

In a couple of seconds you strip all their boons, and you get all their boons. Then you lay the smack down.

Oh, right, boons, almost forgot. Isn’t it remotely possible for a Guardian to show resistance to this? Even through blocks and CC? (Most likely CC) The only experiences I’ve ever had from Sword users were laughable at best. It’s… intriguing. Suppose it must be a real joy to dismantle boon based bunkers bit by bit.

[Suggestion] Rocket Boots

in Engineer

Posted by: MrForz.1953

MrForz.1953

I’m not sure if you realise this, but Rocket Boots is actually working as intended. Rocket Boots is a self-inflicted Launch with Condition cleansing triggering After the Launch. It grants no Evade frames.

  • This means that if you are Immobilised, you go no-where because you cannot move while Immobilised.
  • It means that you can be damaged and CC’ed in mid-air after your Launch because Rocket Boots provides no Evasion frames
  • If you have Stability, only the Condition Cleanse and the Stunbreak trigger. You do not go anywhere because you cannot be Launched.

This means that any change to Rocket Boots will not be a bug fix, but a change in the mechanic of how Rocket Boots works entirely.

I know. But I don’t really think that Anet intends us to travel 3cm instead of 50m during the MASSIVE, self inflicted knockback. The Rocket Boots had one job, ONE JOB! To get you anywhere, ANYWHERE far from the mess you’re into, no matter the way you land. And in the rare case where I actually accept the poor design on this gadget, would I really prefer a knockback (with the usual 3cm traveling distance) instead of a cripple, a chill or an immobilization?

You’re probably not doing anything wrong, Engies overall have always been more or less of a stone wall for any kind of Thief, and they will often outheal your damage if you don’t put a ridiculous amount of initiative in attacks (which often results in death if it fails and they have ALOT of tools to block direct damage).

However outside of the Magnet they have poor chasing abilities, if you really don’t feel it at all you can just ignore it.

Engi p/p WvW-Build advices ?

in Engineer

Posted by: MrForz.1953

MrForz.1953

There aren’t alot of things to look for when going for Tools as a Condition based build.

There are nearly hundreds of threads on t he use of P/P Might stacking. But if you’re allergic to that, a gadget / turret version can be perfectly viable.

http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/engineer/?2.1|a.1m.h16.a.1m.h5|0.0.0.0.0.0|1b.719.1b.719.1b.719.1b.719.1b.719.1b.b19|3w.d18.2w.e12.3w.d18.3w.d18.3x.d18.2w.d12|a5.u64c.a6.a1.a6|2s.d|2d.2x.2n.2m.30|e

That one is an example. Perma-swift with perma-vigor attached to it, Tool Kit will get you out of some hairy situations. Rocket Boots / Slick Shoes are both replacable with anything you fancy. (Most likely Net Turret (which takes profit of the extra condition duration) Elixir S, Elixir R or even the Battery Ram can go there and be mixed the way you like). Add some Veggie Pizza in there and you get some good hit and run material.

Also, I’d like to point out that bleeds are just here to sugarcoat the burns, poison, and confusion you’d have put on your ennemy, they are a priority over the auto-attacks.

What you previously selected before my replacement was far out of the synergy or required stats, Static Discharge requires some power, Elixir H requires alot of points in the Alchemy section and seeing that you looked to include some gadgets you wouldn’t want to spoil your own fun just being pigeonholed into drinking elixirs and shooting.
