You know. I always thought that the last changes on Engineer would be a nerf because the class does feel incredibly strong and malleable, yes. It’s not apparent at first because you need to get attuned to the class to actually uncover all the strengths, those who played Engineer for years see a potential use for nearly every single utility skill and weapon skill and probably has an incredible amount of viable and fitting builds for PvP.
Unfortunately, alot of players flock to this class because the Engineer also has one build that performs extremely well against most of situations and that doesn’t require much thought to use. You could call those “cheap knockoffs” if anything and while the effort to performance ratio favors the unexperienced, they can still be beaten.
I recall the Thief was in this situation in the very beginning. Although it’s much more sensitive to balance due to their mechanics.
I dreaded the day Engineers became that popular.
Dude – read the thread again ok?
I said I didn’t mean pvp…
And I didn’t exactly mean PvP either. Don’t consider this rage but rather frustration. Potential is everywhere, it would be plain bad to restrict any way to play.
NEVER GO PISTOL OFFHAND
Alright, Engineer has very few skills that are totally useless and something that will quickly get on my nerves are the ones literally spitting on specs that aren’t their own.
When the engineer started being perceived as strong in PvP, the whole freaking community rolled cheap knockoffs of these Pistol/Shield builds, not bothering to look beyond the very build they’ve seen, for those who pretty much dropped every other class to fully embrace the Engineer’s greatness and absolutely all its features, it’s an insult.
Not everyone can be bothered to have a shield offhand shoved down their throat and may perhaps prefer to have an additional burn and immobilize on their kitten nal for an even bigger condition pressure on encounters.
Rifle is great, Pistol/Shield is great, and Pistol/Pistol is great. Zerker is great, Celestial is great, Rabid, Settler and Carrion sets are great too. It’s rare for a class to have that much diversity in most of games, it would be best to not be obsessed with only one direction for it.
My head kinda hurts.
I’m really surprised this thread still exists, and that the problem still persists.
You know, I’ve always thought the engi would eat a nerf on this patch. It’s a strong class and one of the few ones where I can just afford to run whatever the hell I want in terms of stats, utility skills, weapons and do okay/wreck stuff, and go HAM and succeed (not 100% of the time of course) with just the sheer power of kit juggling and whatnot and I love it. And that unpredictability makes it even harder for opponents. I definitely don’t say it deserves a nerf in general, but you very rarely meet an engineer and go like “Hee hee, free kill!”. Even in the eyes of a Hambow warrior.
So yeah, make one, test everything, every weapon, every trait, make a build on your own and enjoy.
(edited by MrForz.1953)
I’ll use Supply Crate if I want to. And I’ll enjoy it even more if I deduct somehow that my opponent would do the same if the opportunity was given.
Honestly, screw humans, screw asuras, go charr or sylvari.
Concerning racial stuff. Charr lets you spice your Static Discharge build up with Hidden Pistols and the Shrapnel Mine can be a nice addition to any sort of monstrously high condition damage build. That’s about it.
I’ve been snooping around since I’ve heard “rangers were OP” and for the most part it’s merely an annoyance and that’s only because I’m a rifle lover, therefore, no shield. The only thing I’ve noticed was the MASSIVE number of rangers everywhere, the fact that they can be extremely lame makes me feel bad about the rangers who persevered since the release or at least before it was cool. It kind of reminds me when everyone and their dog decided to roll a pistol/shield engineer without bothering to look further into the class.
Hope that eventually the trend gets to fade away.
If you don’t get to have conflicts on conditions with one of your teammates, a near full celestial engineer specced in 6/6/x/x/x will cause massive damage with a proper rotation, you get to deal very good condition damage and you get a huge direct damage boost to the targets you spam the conditions on. It also has a funny DPS rotation against large mobs:
Spray conditions with grenades > Jump Shot > Acid Spray back to safety. Free to you to add anything in there to spice the rotation.
You should know that the Engineer in its current state can get you afford to change most of things that you can’t stand. The first apparition of the Celestial stats was a godsend since the very day the Bazaar of the Four Winds has hit Lion’s Arch the last year. You have alot of settings to set an accurate slider between tankiness, condition damage, and direct damage, and you can go for any direction, mixing two directions, and even all three of them, and with the weapons of your choice.
Tool Kit is awesome in general in most of builds, I’m sure you can afford to land a pry bar or two in combat. No matter if Hybrid, Condition, Tank, Direct Damage, it always have an use and costs nothing if you ever get to be in close range.

Visually the Predator’s a pain. Although I’ve been used to it and even liked it mostly because of the sounds that (on top of doing heavy damage per hit) makes me feel like I’m actually doing damage. I can forgive the hipshot animation.
The condition tank engineer builds are the most forgiving of all, and it can be calibrated to most of your tastes utility skill wise.
1st one:
-Noble Mask
-Duelist Coat
-Temple Gloves, Pants and Boots
-Whispers Shoulders
2nd one:
-Grenth Hood
-Aetherblade Shoulders
-Magitech Coat, Pants, and Boots
-Scarlet’s Gloves (Dredge ones are perfect in here too)
3rd one is a small variation with different colours and a jetpack instead of the cheese spinal blades. Turning a bioshock-like monstrousity into some sort of shock trooper.
Oh, by the way, it’s an Engineer.
Confusion. Too strong of a condition to be up for abuse.
Let’s just summarize it to “The new engi traits are for the most underwhelming.”
It is understandable that they must not by any means be stronger than what we have now but frankly I wouldn’t bother with them with the GM traits we currently have. Lack of synergy or poor in performance.
Why would you bother with any of the new traits compared to what we have now.
Engineer traits are underwhelming. Why would one bother equipping any of that instead of what we have right now.
I would have them spend more time on simple fixes. Remember, there are 8 classes and 3-4 game modes to balance. Quick and dirty beats slow and tedious.
And Warrior beats all that.
The Net Turret was niche enough despite my love for it, there’s no need for more reasons to just fly above this utility skill.
Ugh. Decap engi. I never thought that a trollesque aspect of the engi would make it to competitive PvP.
I kinda wish the build could go to hell so I could stop being insulted with the ‘n’ word telling I’m a bunker/decap engi while I’m having random fun with dual pistols.
Brrr! Perplexity Runes.
Of course Celestial gear is fine especially on a 30/30/…. build. Get a set of traveler runes on top of it so you can place these last 10 points in something else than tools.
Try not go to HGH. Overrated, will ruin you in performance (compared to Modified Ammunition + grenade synergy) and also in versatility since you’ll barely be able to change your utility skills depending on the situation.
Also, keep in mind that oils/sharpening stones/tuning crystals will have a better effect since you’ll get vitality and toughness, you can compensate the lack of power or precision.
(edited by MrForz.1953)
30/30/…. builds are typically for zerker grenade users.
Wait, we’re finally good at zerging? Did they patch recently?
Or did you mean:
A 1200 range option for a class designed to only 1v1 and having all mechanics around the said design.
Pssst. That makes it even sillier.
A 1200 range option for a class designed to be in the thick of things and having all mechanics around the said design.
Time to leave this planet.
Full zerker gear will bring you above 50%.
You should never feel guilty to crate someone in 1v1. If you do, think of Thieves attempting to engage you with Basilisk Venom or Warriors doing the same with Signet of Rage. It’s their elite. Use yours too. :P
Besides… Thank you for using a rifle, Sil.
Don’t go for the predator unless you’re religious with rifles. Took 4 more months than usual when I made it back in the day because I couldn’t get out of pistol builds.
Perplexity is still insultingly strong to the point of being considered like a sore loser when using the set. Sold mines after 3h of WvW with it. I enjoy stomping people as much as everyone but this rune set is far too wrong and cheesy.
Engi is king of solo roaming (i havent had such an easy time on any other proff). I dont see many doing it though :/ most are mesmers, warriors, and teefs.
That being said im not saying its easy to play just easy to roflstomp everyone once you get it down.
It IS, easy to play. Engi’s been known to be hard to handle but any kitten can wield a pistol, a shield, a bomb kit and a tool kit with dire/rabid/settler gear, assuming most of new Engies these days barely look any further than this which is insulting.
It would be the time to stop the whole trend of “Hey I wanted to live dangerously so I dropped my Warrior and went Engi”.
(edited by MrForz.1953)
It’s not a reason to shove that down the throat of everyone.
I really don’t like these blades much. But I guess it’s the cool thing to get these days.
I also look like something out of a Bioshock. I guess it’s a small plus.
not rampager, never rampager
ever
ever
even with the “dont need defense” justification
How about you leave them the choice instead of acting like this? Rampager can still have some appeal.
Time to switch to rifle.
Engi’s being rather common especially with the current Living Story. Rolling an engi is the cool thing to do these days.
You wanna be unique? Start with a unique look. To hell with magitech and aetherblade, aswell as the cheesy spinal blades pack.
If you’re going to end up saying something like ‘Warriors and Guardians win everything anyways’ you might aswell get off your Engineer now because it’s going to haunt you.
Or… You can stop giving a kitten about it and do what you do best. We are fine. Everyone else can go to hell.
Grenade Kit, Bomb Kit, Elixir Gun. If condition based switch for the speargun’s ‘4’ skill once in a while, and that’s it.
Undead or Noble. Former is cheap, latter has a bit more potential. I’d recommend some Rabid trinkets at least to get some precision up and make Incendiary Powder / Firearms Bleed Procs worthwhile.
You’ll still deal excellent direct damage with a full celestial set if combining Modified Ammunition with grenades. Grenades are optimal for celestial builds.
There are plenty of celestial engineers around.
Mordremoth, the late elder dragon. No idea if Scarlet intended to wake it up to destroy it (thus, refering to the fact that she said that one day everyone will need her) or if she was just a puppet led by this dragon.
If you’re an engineer you can further examine the Breachmaker commands and ways to shut it down.
Just posted it on the other thread. I run a mix of Abyss for the edges, Iron for the leather stuff, and Midnight Yew for the rest. Never underestimate colours like Midnight Yew.
If you really insist on going all black you can just Abyss all of it, if you want some contrast, you can choose Pitch, Graphite, Iron or Black instead of Midnight Yew.
Yeah, I stumbled on it when a warrior looked through the consoles and talked to me about it. I was like “Hey I got this I’m an engi” and found out that there were more options with me. Total blast.
I’ve never a fan of these overrated spinal blades packs despite the finishing of the synergistic one on my engineer. Too cheesy maybe. Plus I have like 800g hanging on my back for nearly a year now.
No mad scientist, no professor, just a plain old fashionned shock trooper.

Alright, as the title says Im thinking of starting an engineer and have some questions.
This is not a “convince me” thread.1) Engineers have very low weapon variety, Ive heard this is because of kits. Thus, how much use of an actual weapon(non kits) does an engineer have?
Inversely, can an engineer fully rely on kits and never pull their “real weapon”?2)Are there any expectations I should have for endgame? will I suddenly suck there, how varied will builds be, etc.
3) How many turrets can you have out at once?
Thanks in advance.
1) Dual Pistols with some traits are great on their own in terms of damage and control. Rifle is great too but often underwhelming mostly AOE wise which is why it’s often compensated by a kit like Grenades.
2) You will unlock your full potential after the level 50 or so because some of our traits are really powerful when combined. And you have tons of build and stat build variations for both PvE and PvP. Condition Damage is on par with Necro if not better, Direct Damage can be amazing although difficult to pull off and you can become a M1 Abrams if you desire. You can also mix between two of these features and even all three of them with a little patience and gold. Everything works.
3) One turret per utility slot, including the heal which makes 4. Add the supply crate and you can have 7 of them for a little while.
(edited by MrForz.1953)
I went with a Celestial armor set. No regret ever since I started wearing it. It always had huge potential on Engineer.
It counts for every condition found on the said mobs. You will hit like a truck on bosses if you have allies.
Yes. Ninja wannabes often tend to infest the PvP fields. No, they’re not stronger than the rest.
You ment ninja’s so i fixed it for you
<3
Well, yeah. Although the lot of them tend to dress in white and red with a hood so I wasn’t exactly sure.
I said I didn’t mean pvp…
