I’ve been in all these situations. Warrior: sorry, nothing you can do. Thief: you can probably win this as you have higher base health. Use your #4 as soon as the thief goes invisible. If you’re downed close to the thief, use your #3 as soon as you can—it actually does great damage. Mesmer: probably nothing you can do, since he’ll probably have a phantasm out. Guardian: the only way to win this is to be close enough to him to use your #3 as soon as he uses his.
I know, I know all of that. Unfortunately that uncovers one side of what downed abilities can do; fighting back, and it’s not even good at all, if we move toward the other side, such as extending the lifespan or escaping…… That’s not looking pretty either.
There is one thing that I despise in all of this: The tiers.
Alot of people do fight for their own servers, and the cause of their fall is the possibility to transfer and the required time and efforts to get back to T1.
What do we have here right now? The Seas of Blackgate vs The Stormbluff Quarry? The names barely matter anymore, popular guilds do, and the territory they defend is rarely anything but a mean to remain in T1 and remain in the action as others eventually try to bring life anywhere else.
I’ve started on Vizunah Square, fought anywhere action was, many times on the rising ennemies’ sides, such as Arborstone, Elona’s Reach, Desolation. I’ve come to T1 NA just in time to see SBI being completly empty and fall and JQ rising. SoS got emptied and its inhabitants got implanted into a fully fueled BG, breaking the T1 door with SoR not far behind.
For my part, I’m guildless, belong to no server, and just wish to fight wherever there is action and eventually help around. The question is.. before going for the talk, do you (people and guilds) really belong to the server you’re fighting for; or is it just a name, where you hide behind and then leave when it starts having its weak moments? Would you bear seeing your server descending into the lower tiers? I see alot of talks about being strong, or weak, but barely anyone would actually hold up when massively outnumbered and instead, will look elsewhere and come back with a new force, and a new server name.
Of course, people can’t really take the blame for it, I’d believe than 3 sides or factions would have been better, instead of 20ish. So people would be permitted to be catapulted in the middle of what’s currently going on instead of swimming in the dark.

I don’t think Stealth in itself is broken.
It’s not, it’s just badly designed, which kinds of compensates the fact that Thief is utter crap outside that. And by all means, that’s NOT a good thing either.
I fought a Guardian, Thief, Mesmer, and Warrior and I happened to get double-downed with each of them, through various scenarios.
These were probably the most embarrassing moments of my life, helplessly throwing junk with a ‘2’ that doesn’t work while the Guardian regens, the Mesmer throws a phantasm on my face, Thief stealths and gains some precious self-rez time.

The baddies have quit WvW!
JQ in third place, who is the king???
The Queen of Blades.
Why am I actually glad that SoR takes over instead of BG.
That explains a lot actually. Some broken BG thieves been picking on you lately? :-)
He’s so lucky, these thieves make some funny visuals when they get blown up. :/
Let designers of all characters make tournament 1 vs 1 . I bet all my money that thief would take first place in huge advantage. Do ANet have balls to arrange that and share results with all community???
What do you think?
I don’t even think Thief would go amongst the top 3. The whole fuss about the class in WvW is due to the badly designed stealth and superior mobility, that’s all, just all.
Dagger thief yes Sword thief nope.
Oh? How come?
Let me guess, when I mentioned Engineer, you directly thought of HGH*409 lamers? The only thing I’d ever care about when facing a sword Thief is where he shadowsteps from with the ‘2’, nothing more hilarious than seeing Thieves trying their Flanking Strikes.

Okey, Anet effectively killed most Mesmers this patch in WvW and they were already rare in PvP, but it only takes one to do a Moa Morph on the Necro and all the minions go POOF with full cooldowns. Show me another profession with such a hard counter.
The Thief when facing an Engineer.
Look up any video with a Minionmancer, Loyo. While they’re not super OP, they’re hard enough to where I cannot win any 1v1 against them, whether in WvW or PvP.
That’s not 1vXing.
YES, after 30s, I’ve FINALLY managed to apply Incendiary Ammo on my pistol, NOW to switch to my Elixir Gun…. bleh.
Most people never do since it’s fun to beat opponents without too much hazzle.
Much easier to become well known and ‘professionnal’, even if the player is a wet noodle.
For many of us other players being used on blowing thieves up, we can’t help but frown at how the crowd blindly follows many thief players who just bothered posting vids of random plays against upleveled people as many would know exactly how to deal with most of the stuff being put on the table.
This is beyond pathetic, all of it.
Hm, you’d only need one person attacking you and.. poof.
Except then you’d be using rocket boots, and immediately feel really bad about your life choices.
It was valuable, with a P/S setup where you crucially needed that burning damage and would make excellent synergies with the Static Shield. For the rest; yes, I felt really bad about my life choices. But there is much worse, like human Thieves in full CoF armor.
there should totally be an asuran cute off contest
I’d win, because charr, that’s all.
A mace and nothing else, an electric mace.
Bleh, it’s cyclic anyways. After that we’ll talk about SoR was full of losers, then about how BG was full of losers, then about how DB was full of losers and whatever rises to T1 and fall next. Same stuff since SBI.
Well I don’t think I’ve seen anyone hating thieves more than I do, but at that point it’s beyond absurd to request more nerfs, really.
Engie and nothing else in the world.
Step 1: Rifle 5 as far away as you can.
Step 2: Swap to elixir gun in mid-air.
Step 3: Angle camera towards zerg.
Step 4: Queue up 4 before you hit the ground.
Step 5: ???
Step 6: Die because you were chilled/crippled and only moved 3 feet.
It’s funny, Rocket Boots gets you to do all of that, and even if it removed anything that affects your mobility, it will still be there to destroy your immense knockback and move 3 feet before the removal, and end up with Step 6.
Engi has the short end of the stick, but definitely not in PvP :/
cool story bro.
I still think they are grossly overpowered, but hey that’s my personal opinion.
And thus, you shouldn’t try to shove that down everyone’s throat especially when imbued with ignorance, thank you.
Hey T1 peeps, T2 DB local here.. Just curious, what type of beer do you all prefer?
The Elixir X. Well it’s not a beer, but still.
WvWvW are full of Thieves, yes. A large part of my opponents are Thieves. I run a build dedicated in slaughtering them and showing little care in 1v1ing anyone else during the time I roam.
Now, I’d like to say something on the matter. I’ve been fighting a S/D Thief for around 20min, which were resumed in quick engage-disengages. Thief would shadowstep to me and engage, I raise the Gear Shield to absorb the large portion of the attack + deny a CnD and attempt to destroy the Thief up with hard CC and burst, he’d shadowstep back to the location even when CC’d and run away with 10% health, all the time.
I’ve been trying to not attack and let him continue his aggression for his Sword-based shadowstep to reset and dodges to be burnt, and when counter-attacking, he’d use the utility version of the shadowstep and I wouldn’t hear from him for a minute. It kept going on, and on, and on, until until 50+ of my allies passed by during the moment I dropped the supply crate on his face.
From these very actions, people have different points of view, many, including myself, would say that if the Thief didn’t have so much mobility I’d have blasted him in the sky. Others would just say that so much mobility and stealth is grossly overpowered. I understand that an Engineer is amongst the biggest threats to a Thief, but I’d say that their current abilities is a necessary evil. I’d worry more about Mesmers than Thieves.
This is what I think of when RISE portal bombs. Just saying.
Hah, yes, definitely. Hilarious when done wrong.
Why do you think so many people enjoy playing a useless profession?
Because people like to be wannabe gankers and get easy kills. It probably is hilarious for a while find that green arrow and one hit him laika pro and then repeat “i have skillz, ihave skillz, i have skillz”.
And also because people like dark shadow ninja assassins.
A thief looking to gank/grief/troll someone won’t pick targets basedo on the uplevelled arrow, he will pick targets based on their looks, movement, behaviour just like every predator.
And get blown up.
Condition is infact recommended since it requires very little setup.
Handling 1 v many however, will depend of how efficiently you can stomp the downed players, as you have very little CC to interrupt revivals, and.. pretty much one, safe, opportunity to execute a stomp.
So you played the 3 most popular and possibly overpowered WvW classes and now you look down at us peons and our ‘cattle’ classes?
Well us, Engineers, instead of using grossly overpowered blink or stealth abilities we throw annoying stuff behind us, which are Nails from the Tool Kit, Slick Shoes ability + toolbelt ability or sometimes Supply Crate if there aren’t way too many players.
You can also try some homemade stealth if you use the Bomb Kit, combining Smoke Bomb with any blast ability like Supply Crate, Big Ol’ Bomb, or Rocket Boots. Rocket Boots would be most efficient here since it also grants you a massive knockback while stealthed. But the time for you to set all that up there are strong chances that you’re caught and killed.
Well engineer is fine, thank you for asking good sir.
You know it is funny I have never seen a topic talking about rifles for thieves. It might however be a limitation on the thread search engine though.
There were hundreds of millions of thousands of… well, plenty of threads about this because people wouldn’t give a kitten about the Thief’s core gameplay and just want to be the ‘Assassin’ even if it goes completly against the whole thing.
Don’t get me wrong I already knew it would be seen as a cliche by many to have the rifle for thief, but where do you draw the line for cliches? Certainly pistol pistol has to be more of a cliche than a rifle for thieves? It doesn’t even have to be focused on burst damage. Like someone said it could be a sort of debilitating weapon. Certainly in the grand scheme of things options are not a bad thing.
It has nothing to do with the cliche or not cliche, Thief by default is defined by in-combat decisions and the use of mobility in it, that’s why you see Daggers and Swords. Pistols could get there because it’s mid range and that it’s light weaponry, so it wasn’t a problem to add initiative based mechanics and creative mobility skills in there. You’d find alot of common spots between the Daggers, Pistols, and Swords you use.
I also don’t think “wrong game, wrong class” is a set of logic that can be employed very well. A lot of this game relies on tried and true concepts; fighters have big swords and less conventional concepts; casters have big swords.
And from what I just said above, well, how would you implant the Rifle gameplay based on Anet’s design of Thieves? I know that Rifle + Stealth will immediatly ring ‘SNIPER!’, but.. we’re talking about Thieves, it’s like saying that they should get a greatsword because they know a great deal about fighting. Besides Anet will have the last word on this.
Running with Rise today was hilarious xD
Those portal bombs Jarvan is addicted to seem to work quite well
You mean.. they were laughable :|
They got a kitten pin and not us, nerf the kitten out of them.
Wrong game, and wrong class.
I really don’t know what’s the big deal with them, I’d almost feel pity for them if they weren’t jerks imbued with self proclaimed greatness, looking down to other classes like if they were cattle.
(edited by MrForz.1953)
Ugh, human thieves in full CoF armor.
Don’t underestimate french peoples’ ability to ruin things for other people!
You can trust me, they won’t give a toss about your petty squabbles.
Everyone will be on one big super server in TESO. Will be interesting how they pull it off.
Well everyone would have a piece of the pie and have the chance to be part of what’s going on.
Not really sure about the Rocket Boots, I’ve had the displeasure to find out that the immense knockback you get can be affected by the mobility conditions you already have on yourself, dramatically reducing the distance, and thus putting you in more trouble than if you used a simple stun breaker instead.
Now it is difficult to find something useful with a toolbelt skill that makes the best use of Static Discharge, and the first thing that comes in mind is the Personnal Battery Ram. Okay damage on toolbelt skill, cripple, and a knockback on demand, on top of a set that is already CC heavy.
I think I’d have prefered 3 massive servers fighting eachother, faction wise, rather than 20+ where people would just bandwagon to T1/2 ones and leave the rest for dead.
Death by Covenn however is a frequent and understandable occurance. And fun to watch.
Death by cliff too.
See? This wasn’t the end of the world.
How does the elixir gun work against guardians? I am not doubting the statement I am just not familiar with it and trying to learn all I can.
It doesn’t work. It’s cool that you can reduce the endurance regen but that’s all you’re going to do and will only have a very little impact now that Anet fixed the condition duration tweaks on Rifled Barrels.
(edited by MrForz.1953)
I have enough of drinking Elixirs, I want gadgets to be worthwhile.
I would like to tell you that Thief stealth is only one part of the gameplay, it progressively became crucial to the class because it was grossly overpowered, then because it was the only option left. Now to buff the other Thief assets and utility skills, well… It would be refreshing to get raise the viability of non-stealth Thieves which is close to nonexistant.
(edited by MrForz.1953)
I’d like to say that if an Ele didn’t use mist form during combat, you kind of deserve to have it on your face, same thing is applied for Necro, Engie, Warrior, Guardian. The only exception being the Thief’s stealth stomping as it has no cooldown.
