And here we go again.
I’m still hoping for greatswords honestly. Samurai or jedi/sith ftw!
I lol’d.
Kk thnx then engi = balanced.
bye
Much analysis, very judgement.
“Convince me” Well hell no. If you actually show any form of interest or curiosity, you don’t need us to make you roll an Engi.
Diablo III’s demon hunter would like to teach you a think or two about how to do engineering correctly and how to do grenades correctly.
With the combined help of the Raven, the Wolf, the Bat, the Spider, the Boar and the Ferrets?
That’s dead late but whatever. I don’t want this thread to sink.
Many people were drawn, on purpose or by accident to see even a glimpse of what Scarlet saw by herself, killing them outright or changing them forever. This once modest engineer who risked everything trying to establish a lasting peace between the Charr and the local Dredge and left for dead by the Molten Alliance was one of them. He’s now something else.
Under his new form, he’s been a major help on the field, punching through the forces of the Molten Alliance and its Berserkers during the attack on Lion’s Arch and granting access to the tower.
However many of his mental abilities are severely damaged and he can’t even pronounce a sentence, it might take a long time to remember the totality of what he even was.
During this time, with the awakening of Mordremoth caused by Scarlet, there’s only one way to go:
Im pretty darn sure “teef” was around long before Guild Wars 2.
All the versions of the mispelled Thief appeared quickly after the very first MMOs, when the leet language was quite the thing.
my too much time playing borderlands just immediately links that song claptrap’s pirate ship mode. sorry!
Strange that barely anyone came out with this.

Also. I still have bad memories of the pre-nerf CoE that I needed to camp in order to get the Predator.
The mediocre experience at low level is normal. Once you’re 50 and above you can start to tinker with the more interesting things.
I don’t know what I expected to find in this thread, I just saw Power Rangers. I ehm… I’m out.
Blame the general inability to spell Thief that turned into a trend.
On top of this, this sort of rant is kind of old now, and not exclusive to the Thief itself. P/D is fairly strong and quite intuitive to manage 1vsMany with. I do hate to fight it because I can rarely be bothered to have the patience to bait all the major evasion cooldowns before slaughtering the wielder of these two weapons, and when playing it, I prefer something with a little more ‘oomph’.
Concerning the people themselves, they’ll always find a way to shove their whine down your throat and point at you for something you may or may not have. For a whole year I’ve had a good amount of Thieves, amongst all the people (believe it or not but the whine is strong should an assassination attempt fail terri-badly) calling me a “perplexity piece of kitten” when I was using Traveler runes, as a Zerker rifle and then as a Celestial rifle build, one of the first of its kind. The fact that I smashed them with a Pry Bar and that it applied 5 Confusion stacks was enough for them to make the perplexity statement, I used to be sorry, trying to explain myself and now it’s just pointless. Many people can’t be reasoned with and it’s up to them to find out.

I don’t normally use turrets, but when I do… that’s down the cascade at the entrance of the WvW jumping puzzle.
If you don’t consider tears of fallen enemies rewarding, then yeah, not too rewarding…
:P
Rarely anything is rewarding if you don’t consider that.
Why would you want a gap closer on a RANGED weapon. I
m sorry but that is idiotic. Can you imagine Sword – Dagger thieves 2 skill teleporting them away?? That is the same thing mate. And why can’t we have burst at range? Because whiners say so? Rangers can burst at range and thieves are meant to be strong at burst.
Giving them a really strong single target damage weapon to control and take out targets fits perfectly into it
Alright. Thief is often a source of high burst damage and relies, when defending itself, on mobility (and positioning), blinds to an extent, dodge movements + endurance management, aaand stealth. Most of used weapon combinations give a measured amount of all of the above. All the weapons will get you up close and personal with your opponent, and this is where Initiative shines, and its management is what the Thief is all about.
- >Now let’s go for your extreme range single target DPS weapon. If at first you don’t care about adding defensive skills to your rifle, then what kind of offensive skills would you want to put on it? Burst damage you said? The problem is that you’re on a class that doesn’t have cooldowns, so you’d be primarily spamming that burst damage skill whenever it’s up and then go back to auto-attacking when you’re empty on initiative. The Shortbow and Pistols are okay in that matter because you’re close enough to keep some initiative for one of the various utility skills when you fight. But with the rifle, you’re pretty much a Warrior with no cooldowns at that point, and not only that’s boring, but it’s not quite Thief like in terms of core gameplay.
Also, there will be the matter of stealth striking with the rifle, especially in PvP. Doing so with the shortbow, or a pistol at 900 range gets you to be close enough for a prepared opponent to make a response attempt, to jump on you, to shoot you back. With a rifle’s stealth attack, assuming that you still want burst, you’d be mowing your unsuspecting prey down at 1200 – 1500 range and he’ll have two options: To flee, or to desperatly make an attempt at catching you, and he’ll already be 3/4 dead with defenses already used when he gets to you. That’s not quite healthy. And should a nerf come to pass with this, the weapon will simply suck.
- > Should such a gameplay come to pass, now what kind of defensive (or outplaying) skills that is in line with what a Thief is mainly about would you put on your rifle? Stealth? Evades? Mobility? All those would be 100% toxic for such a weapon. And blind alone wouldn’t cut it.
Oh, and Steal would only be there to look good.
I understand that many Thieves want to be shadow snipers or whatever, others simply want a 1200 range weapon, but the very core of the class will make it incredibly difficult to make this wish a reality.

Honestly I would love if we got double foci. It would be cool to see Thieves running around with two of these.
I was mostly tinking of a dual Courage:
So our specialisation will be ‘Elite Shadow ninja assassin’?
That would be frightening.
Am I the only one who plays Thief to feel like Garrett?
Many people would gladly change the “Thief” name to something quite cheesier I’m afraid.
ew. dont do the condi team as cele. youre condis are crap, wearing rabid would double your dps.
edit: inb4 phiw
That was a rare occurence though, not likely to happen again. Hybrid damage wouldn’t have been welcomed at that time if engies weren’t able to naturally apply everything except torment, plus, the real trouble with (hehe) Triple Trouble was the second phase where most of the time the crowd would lack the direct damage to finish the wurms off. A short coming in condition damage against the husks in exchange of a major boost in direct damage for the second phase was quite welcomed.
I used Celestial for absolutely every game mode since it first went out. You deal a good amount of damage and remain very solid. That includes the Triple Trouble event, as part of the Condition Team.
Anyway, thieves will probably have mace because mace would be good to stun things from behind and then steal their everything. This fit the thieve theme
And leave your enemies naked and freezing in the middle of the WvW grounds.
I guess it’s the price to pay for having access to kits underwater.
With all the dungeons done since the very beginning of the game and despite the nasty rumors about Warriors and Guardians only, I’ve never, ever had a team that minded my presence as an Engi.
At the very base, they’d expect you to be reliable on your own, and toss grenades from afar, applying direct damage, condition damage, and vulnerability which means more damage for them too. But you can do far more than that for your party along with the great damage such as Might spamming, homemade stealth, healing, even if it tends to go unnoticed.
Long range assassin that hits from the shadows and snipes from afar. Well well well, sir. I doubt the game will ever allow such a thing. Not only by principle for the health of the very game but also because it’s not a possible spec of the “Thief”. It’s nearly against most of things the class stands for: Initiaitve, most of traits, being in the thick of things.
“Sniping”, if you call it that (because as I said, real sniping would be 100% toxic) was given to Warriors because they’re all about fighting and killing, in all possible manners.
At the very best, the ability to snipe would be given through a specific weapon, a mounted, immovable sniper rifle, like the ones you find in Ascalon.

Yes.
Very amusing. And what about the rest of the quote?
When you give a sneaky dude a rifle, at least i think of long range, slow rate of fire, high damage. Which fits direct damage burst more than condition.
That’s a Thief for you?
Because rifle is the least weeaboo, no offense. All these players wanting to be samurai, monks and ninjas just really bug me.
It does bug me too, yet, all I seem to see is that most of people want to stuff their death dealing dark shadow mass-murdering assassins of doom (or whatever concept) with extreme range weapons that one-shots and that contain skills giving them mobility and more burst for that 360-noscope feel. That’s hardly any better in concept than some samurai, monk, ninja, Altair or whatever. To get the Thief to remain a Thief is difficult, and the community doesn’t want a Thief.
(edited by MrForz.1953)
A thief is a person that steals goods. Many can see a bandit or a brigand, others see some kittenassin (and I freaking hate the amalgam), some see a cunning and dirty fighter.
The problem with Rifle and Thief is that the very gameplay is incompatible with the weapon. What would you make of a (probably) ~1200 range rifle when everything about you is about getting in the thick of things and out of it?
I’d also like to add something along with my previous post. While I despise scrubs everywhere, it would be unwise to grow hateful toward those and go down to their level.
The OP felt is was necessary to give as many details as possible so the said scrub doesn’t have ANY sort of excuse should he engage in an argument. It’s all fine, however you don’t want to become a kitten yourself when retaliating to another kitten and you certainly don’t want to beat, stab, cut, slice and shoot the horse the OP just killed in here. Such a phenomenon has tainted the behavior of many people, and you lot are far better than that, beyond that, even.
Glad to see things haven’t changed on both the giving and receiving end in that matter since eh… 2012?
I’m merely 1/4 of what my Thief will ever be compared to my Engi but you need to know this: A majority of people is ready to spit out total nonsense to feel better at the end of the day and this is not restricted to Thief only. I’ve been sprayed by insults such as “kittening Perplexity exploiting piece of kitten” and then blocked me when I’ve showed my Celestial gear, Might sigils and Traveler runes. The fact that I’ve used my Pry Bar was enough for targets to spit said nonsense.
There’s no reasoning with these people no matter how nice you are, it’s up to them alone to find out.
norn cuz engi can solo literally everything
It will only be valid if the Norn bears THE mustache.
It’s actually surprising that the Healing Turret and its tricks haven’t been destroyed by Anet. Anyone trying it out will never go back to the Med Kit or the Elixir H.
The twisted battle for Lion’s Arch has left a mark that will remain forever.
Flaw – not so cool magitech.
Get rid of the shoulders and gloves, don’t put a helmet and you’ve got a solid base. Aetherblade shoulders will go nicely, and dredge gloves fit better.
The CD reduction made it a far more manageable gadget, to be used in nearly every encounter. It wasn’t the case before. The repeated knockdown is indeed intended, however, the said cooldown reduction was uncalled for in the first place.
Turrets. They don’t have a strong presence in builds but I’ve always enjoyed strapping the Net Turret and Rifle Turret in various builds, serving their purposes. There’s also the unhealthy trolling potential you have when inside jumping puzzles, entertainment and all that. A full turret build (outside the said PvP JP trolling) probably won’t serve any purpose in open fields, and they’ll quickly become one trick ponies.
I like the way people insult you for certain builds. I have won 1v1 fights in open field, playing WvW and had enemies block me so they can get my account name and PM me hate mesages. I have had messages calling me a “perplexity noob engineer” when I was actually running melandru runes. Always makes me laugh. In WvW and PvP, when I get hate PMs, for almost 2 years now, 100% of the time, I reply with 1 message and 1 message only. I just reply with “I love you”…….for each additional message after that I reply again with the same message.
Welcome to the club. Been hammered with perplexity insults for exactly one year and half when bearing a 6/6/2/0/0 (formerly 30/30/10/0/0) Traveler rune powered celestial rifle build. I don’t have that much fun dealing with those, hell I was once nice enough to attempt to have a conversation with one of them, a Thief. Showed my gear and all that. Was blocked. Applying Confusion stacks through Pry Bar seems to be enough of a justification.

Time to get myself a Mecha Anchor.
First rule of Guild Warts 2: Don’t get hyped for anything! It will just end in disappointment!
Wahoo! Bye frands!
I thought this was a general rule. :P

Oh yes, Hammer Engineer. It’s the last thing I needed to complete my charr’s portrait. Thank you Anet.
I admit, I find it hilarious that the Engineer’s CC became a hot topic, when barely anything changed on that matter for a looooooong time.
You have the WvW Jumping Puzzles for things such as the Mine, should you ever be in the mood. =P

The recent buffs definitely weren’t the scapegoat. Since the release, when the profession was riddled with bugs and clunky effects, the Engi was strong, not stupidly strong but it gave everyone quite more trouble than they could handle. It didn’t have much nerfs, and not many people were ready to sink into a gameplay that frustrated them at first and didn’t care for it. Now that the metas have been forged in stone and the strength of the Engineer fully recognized, well, you’re witnessing the results at the moment. Some would like it to be toned down.
While the engi is slightly below solid in terms of condition removal for certain playstyles, it’s not advised to riddle them with such a good way to remove conditions, especially for a minor trait located in the adept tree. Too… synergistic.
You know, I’m surprised the nerf hasn’t been done like, months and months ago. I’m an avid user of Celestial gear since its very existence and despite sharing my blast for this set to many PvPers, WvW and PvP alike, the only thing I’ve heard in return was a “meh” on both realms. Yet it’s like… everything an Engi could ask for.
(edited by MrForz.1953)
No real ways to outrun a zerg in the traditionnal manner. It comes down to slowing your opponents with the nails and eventual bombs but nowadays people know to not run right behind an Engineer. A very dangerous way to outrun people is the combination of the Elixir Gun’s backwards leap and your rifle’s Jump Shot, the former requires you to turn around but the distance is quite large in counterpart, the EG isn’t as good as the Rocket Boots but it provides more options on the side. The other problem is that… well, it requires a rifle. Everyone seems go love their pistol and shield.
(edited by MrForz.1953)
Charr is the heart of combat engineers and the technology used in most of skills kind of belongs to them. However, looking good is slightly more difficult, but manageable.
The reasoning behind the Engineer isn’t about the number of buttons to press. Assuming that you’ve got a well rounded multi-kit build that does more or less the job, what makes it mechanically intensive is the knowledge needed to find the tools and abilities you’re looking to execute within all your kits and in the middle of a fight, most of rotations are developped on the fly and each screwup will require a different rotation and that includes damage, protection, evading, mobility, no kits are designed for only one purpose which means that whatever your purpose will be for the next 5 seconds of your current fight, you’ll find shards of it within each kit you have.
That is mechanically intensive. That doesn’t mean however that it makes us any better. Mechanics are about handling your build, there’s still the matter of what you do with them and the decisions you take in general like in PvP, that’s separate, and that’s where classes such as the Thief comes in.

I can hardly keep track of what’s going on anymore.
the 2 arent really related
for example you could compliment her without backhanding everyone else
but that just wouldnt be you would it
You’d want to have a compliment too or something? Is it that much of a big deal?
You can also go for the full Celestial route with 6/6/2/0/0 (Grenadier + Modified Ammunition) and carrying a Rifle, a Grenade Kit, a Tool Kit and and an utility skill of your choice (Preferably Elixir Gun) depending of the situation.
The damage will be hybrid but thanks to the trait combo above you’ll deal additional damage based on the number of conditions your target has, so you’ll hit like a truck and riddle them with all sorts of conditions.
Grenades will be your main source of damage if you have an occasion to land them (Knocked down target or immobilize) Your rifle auto-attack (if you’re lazy) will hit hard and often serves as a tenderizer of some sort, and the mix of vitality, toughness and healing power from the celestial gear will help you being resilient.
Tool Kit will remain a must as it adds a long range pull and a 3 seconds block to your kitten nal and if you can apply it, the Pry Bar is a great source of damage. The Box of Nails will help you making a retreat should you flee and the Throw Wrench is a great chasing tool.
Healing Turret will remain the only choice since it’s a good heal on short cooldown that removes 2 conditions, once you’re familiar with the trick you won’t leave it.
Concerning mobility, Jump Shot is okay, and pairs well with the Acid Bomb’s backward leap from the Elixir Gun. While it remains the best option for the 3rd utility skill (due to the ability to spam weakness, to use the awesome Super-Elixir and to make a backwards leap. Nothing really prevents you from using something else like the Elixir S or the Rocket Boots.
3 Kits Engineer, and the fun part is, it’s not frustrating at all.
