make your clovers first. 2/3 of the time, you will get T6 mats instead (common, fine, or rare). this will give you roughly 25 of every T6 material.
after that, you will need to buy a lot of them off the TP. you don’t need to be a TP baron to buy stuff off the TP, but you will spend the next year grinding mobs if you try to find them all yourself.

+1 to Erich – more people use bows than torches, so if you can craft a bow for 5g and sell it for 4g, that’s technically cheaper than crafting a torch for 3g that you sell for 1g.

my guess is it’s an oversight, and they don’t change things just because they should be differently, but only when something is needed. If they release an item that requires azurite orbs and azurite orbs go to like 10g, they will add that promotion option or an alternative so that their new item is used. It makes a bit of sense – if you fix every little thing, you’ll spend all your time tinkering with little stuff. also, most things work themselves out and only the price of azurite orbs would be affected. if they tinker, then everyone that invested in azurite orbs lose big and they get mad.

I think the main reason is that returns are kept secret. If it was exactly 250 copper ore = 100 iron ore, then everyone would do it. as it is, you have to be a master just to not lose big time.

oh, the other alternative is that there is a recipe that requires those 3 ingredients plus a 4th one that you need to add.
if you add 1 ingredient, it might say ‘there are 68 discoverable recipes that have this ingredient’
adding a 2nd ingredient, it might say ‘there are 6 discoverable recipes that have these ingredients’
adding a 3rd could say ‘there is 1 discoverable recipe that has these ingredients’
but if the 1 discoverable recipe it is referring to requires a 4th ingredient, the recipe would not be discoverable until you add that 4th ingredient.

direct answer to your question: you already discovered that recipe. you have to go to production and craft it from there.

discovery… most things you make with crafting are discovered. meaning you ‘randomly’ see what you can throw together and get something out of it. I quote ‘randomly’ because 99.9% of things are predictable: throw in shoe soles, shoe upper, insignia, and you get boots of the type of the insignia.

there are many recipes that can not be discovered. Instead, you either buy them from a merchant or from the TP or get them as a drop from specific mobs (possibly only during certain events). For these, you need to have the recipe in the inventory of the character you want to learn it (make sure it is usable for a profession that character has), then ‘use’ it. it will then appear in the production tab (use the search if you can’t find it)

it’s hella worth it for the convenience it provides and time it saves (and time = money). not worth it in terms of a way to save coin.
I’ve used mine roughly 300,000 times (getting luck). that’s 20,000 crude kits I didn’t have to purchase. Just the time to click ‘buy’ to get those is almost 2 hours, nevermind time to run to a merchant or double-click a new kit. my bags are almost never full.

I hear and agree with what you are saying regarding SP – I’m taking those into consideration when I craft.
But maybe there is something wrong with my math or something? basically, it looks like there are almost no profitable material promotions.
with leather, the least loss is from rawhide → thin: (250×8c+22c+9c=20s31c in materials gives you 80×22c=17s60c in thin leather section
you mentioned copper→silver→gold in another post:
first, silver is less than copper. even if you got 1:1 (instead of 250:80) it would still be a loss
250×24c+60c+26c=60s86c in materials gives 80×60c=48s0c in gold ore
refined is just about exactly double all the numbers – which is still a loss.
there seems to be only one common material promotion that is profitable, and it’s about 30s/SP. Fine materials have about a dozen profitable ones, but none above 40s/SP. Rare is basically just most of the core→lodestone, and those aren’t even 20s/SP
I’m just wondering where these multi-gold-per-SP mystic forgings I’ve heard of are. It seems the only place they exist is when making legendaries (1.5-3.5g/SP)
or maybe this isn’t something we want everyone on the forums knowing about? :P

an aside: it’s not gambling if you have a sufficiently large sample size
- crafting
- investing / speculation
- salvage rares and exotics for ectos/rune/sigil/inscription/insignia
- little bit of opening bags
- little bit of salvaging blues and greens for luck while making a profit
- I might try to get into precursor forging, but I’m not sure enough yet that the profit margin is worth the risk and time.

indeed, it’s weighted. how do you even weigh RNG??? well, I guess I could think of a way: make an array with the values 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5. now pick a random array key.

anyways, I tried several common materials T1 – T4 -> T2-T5:
34 attempts
resulted in a total of 2700 materials
= 79.41 promoted material per 250 starting material

Based on that, I would guess that the actual average is about 2/3 of the real average:
Common
T1->T2 40-200 = 80
T5->T6 10-40 = 17
Fine
T1->T2 7-40 = 15.66
T5->T6 5-12 = 5.66
Dust
T1->T2 40-200 = 80
T5->T6 6-40 = 15.33

Does anyone know the average amount of materials you get back from material promotion in the Mystic Forge?

Based on the wiki, I think it’s something like:
Common
T1->T2 40-200 = 120
T5->T6 10-40 = 25
Fine
T1->T2 7-40 = 23.5
T5->T6 5-12 = 8.5
Dust
T1->T2 40-200 = 120
T5->T6 6-40 = 23

are these correct? or does it weigh it so you’re more likely to get on the lower end?

I don’t mind them advertising it. It’s kinda annoying when they release new clothes, because that’s time that could of been spent adding content instead. announcing what’s already there isn’t bad, and takes 5 seconds of an intern’s time.
I’m used to companies advertising what they’ve been doing for years: “buy this tablet now! for the low-low price of $199.9999 [it’s been that price for the past 18 months]” or the always-on-sale stores :P

I would estimate about half of everything that can be crafted can be sold for a profit. It’s mostly the harder-to-make and more popular things that are profitable:
ascended materials is the first to come to mind as almost-always profitable
a lot of components are profitable (people buy them to level their craft easier)
a lot of consumables are profitable (especially ones that require a recipe that is no longer obtainable, or costs a lot)

unless it’s the superior sigil of generosity or >+9 AR infusion, you can literally buy 3-10 of that rune/sigil for the price of 1 upgrade extractor. (even if you’re buying the gems with $$)

it only stops the error for 1 or 2 sales. Basically, you are limited to something like 8 sales per 30 seconds. If you try to sell a 9th one at the 28 second mark, it won’t work, then you go somewhere else, then come back, and all of a sudden your’re trying to sell something at the 31 second mark and it works. you could of just as easily stared at your screen fuming about having to wait there for 3 seconds.
same goes for clicking ‘ok’ – it just lengthens how long it takes you to sell something, so instead of 1 sale every 2 seconds, it’s 1 sale every 3 seconds.

I guarantee you it’s not an error. It used to be you could repeatedly hit ‘sell’ and when that 30 second limit came up, it would go through. now, every time you hit sell it refreshes the wait time. Basically, they literally made the problem worse in one of the updates about 10 months ago. That’s not an error – that’s intentional.

fun semi-related info: youtube release some results of a study they did that said the longer it takes a movie to load, the more likely people will close and not watch it. It was something pretty steep like 2 seconds = 20% of the people left, 10 seconds = 50% of the people left, 30 seconds = 90% of the people left (for a 2 minute video).

I don’t know if it helps, but it certainly doesn’t fix it. I checked that option. The most clear-cut example of it still buggy would be when Claw of Jormag fears everyone. I can blink towards him, breaking the fear, and then the camera is facing away from him. rawr.

This is never confirm for Dark Matter. It is confirm that kits has no affect on ecto drop rate. So I would assume it does not matter with Dark Matter.

this is absolutely not the case.
rares with a master salvage kit = 0.875 ecto
rares with a black lion salvage kit = 1.25 ecto
exotics with a master salvage kit = 1.27 ecto
exotics with a black lion salvage kit = 1.66 ecto
I have no idea if kit quality affects dark matter drop rate, but I would assume it does make a small difference (probably something like 0.5 vs. 0.6)

also, BLSK are currently at (1)(23)(36) per use (gem price of (10)(28)(0) / 100 gems)

I do agree that you should use MSK on low value exotics and BLSK on high-value exotics. add up the cost of the rune/sigil and inscription/insignia (if it can give one), if that total sells for below ~4g = use a MSK, above 4g = BLSK.

ascended armor has 1 socket and 1 infusion slot
a rune will go in the socket
an infusion will go in the slot
infusions could have agony resist, or they could be wvw ones.
I believe all ascended armor has defense infusion slot, so no offense or utility infusions into it (infusions with just AR are omni – they can go in offense or defense infusion slots).
if you want to take a rune out of armor, you can either salvage the armor (you can’t salvage ascended armor) or use a upgrade extractor. neither of these options are viable for any rune you could possible put into that armor. It’s far cheaper just to buy a new rune.

you may way to just buy the ascended inscriptions/insignia you would otherwise use dark matter to make. There are some weird parts of ascended crafting that are TP-able… You don’t actually have to deal with dark matter.

chalice of glory gives you 5000 pvp rank points. if you have never pvp’ed, this will give you a few pvp ranks. each rank has rewards. I’ve not pvp’ed much, so I don’t know any more about it :P

birthday booster… I would say zerging in WvW or EotM would be your most efficient use of it. I just used one of mine – almost entirely in EotM. I gained like 120 ranks. I highly recommend NOT spending all your time there. It just gets numbing to do the same thing over and over.
I didn’t know this, so I’ll tell you: birthday booster does nothing/bubkiss/nadda/zero/nill to karma income. It does not give any extra karma, so don’t use it trying to get karma.

I am still able to buy over 100k in a matter of seconds. their solution does not fix that potential problem. no one would ever think “man, I would totally buy those 100,000 iron ore and relist them for 1c higher so I can lose 10c per if only I could list 100,000 iron ore in less than 25 minutes.”
A bot could do the above. however: Their implementation hurts real players more than bots. A bot doesn’t care how long it takes to list 100,000 iron ore. A bot would just be programmed to list it over the course of 30 minutes. It doesn’t even hurt the bot’s performance. On the other hand, there is never a day when I don’t see this error.
I’ve suggested many alternatives that would actually affect bots more than players, I’ll list a couple here: no more than 1 listing every 2 or 3 seconds (and no error if you go faster – it just grey’s out the “sell” button until the time is up), no more than 500 listings per day.

:P once you hit 218, it’s 150 exotic essences per 1% mf. so 3 stacks for 5% mf. My luck income REALLY slowed down when I had to spend like 4 hours of salvaging to gain 6% mf. I just stopped caring about more essences at that point, and stopped going out and buying them.

I really hate skills that do this. especially ones that do it inconsistently. my main source of aggravation over this is blink. I think I’ve narrowed it down to: if you are in combat and blink, you will always end up facing your enemy. 100% of the time, this is the wrong direction you want to be facing with this skill. it’s a bail skill, used to get you out of tight situations. it shouldn’t be trying to get you into tight situations. ideally, it would face you in the direction you were blinking to.

I’ve found that disabling the Use Free Camera setting would help you in that situation.
Your skill would put you facing the enemy, but your camera would still be facing another direction. Hitting your forward movement key would turn your character around and immediately start running in the direction away from the enemy as your character will move in the direction your camera is facing instead of the direction they were left facing after using that skill.

That is, unless Blink automatically moves toward a target due to the Autotargeting setting that automatically selects an appropriate target when a skill is used and you don’t want it to select a target and go toward it.

thanks, I’ll give this a shot tonight. you’re likely right- that blink will make the character face the enemy, but checking this might make the camera not follow the character. we shall see

that’s what I use 99% of my stones on.
the last 1%, I save account-bound exotics that I get from drops and when I get 3 of them, I include a stone and throw them into the forge, which gives me an exotic that can be sold on the TP.

advice: if a auto-clicking macro is illegal, you would probably only get in trouble if you abused it. like setting it to click 1000 times a second to use a stack of luck in under a second. I doubt they would punish someone for setting it up to click as fast as you normally click – in which case it’s just doing what you would (and could) normally do but saving you your health.
(I believe a auto-clicking macro would technically be against their rules, because 1 click = using 250 essences of luck is not ‘1 click = 1 action’)

They used to be soulbound on use and were not able to be placed on the TP. Not sure why they ever changed this.

they used to be soulbound on use
but before you soulbound it, you COULD sell it on the TP.

now they are account-bound on use
and you can still sell it on the TP before you account-bind it.

the only time you could not sell legendaries on the TP was when you couldn’t make legendaries when the game was first released (I think it was a bug… one of the gifts was unmakable at the time)

There is a web page you can actually go to and browse the trade post directly, which is the same one the game uses. The difference is that the game provides a higher security authorization that allows you to purchase and sell items.

not-so-fun inconvenience: most of the lettering is in white (in game it’s white-on-dark background), but on web browser it’s a white background, so I can’t see any names for basic-quality items or some prices :P

Moon misundersood. OP was suggesting a 1st party program – one that was run by Anet to be a TP-proxy while the TP is non-functional. which seems like a bad idea. it would basically be a backup TP for when the TP isn’t working – so developers would have to spend half their time making a 2nd TP instead of all their time making the TP that works work without breaking. I would rather one TP that works 99% of the time than two TPs that each work 50% of the time.

I would estimate about half the items you can craft are cheaper crafted than bought. No rhyme or reason to which are cheaper to craft or not, and a lot of the things that are cheaper purchased are cheaper by orders of magnitude.
IMO it’s usually not worth the time to compare costs of crafted vs. bought, except for things that cost a lot or you need a lot of them (such as destroyer weapons or sharpening stones)
for a quick comparison, I go to spidy. well, google usually is quicker for searching spidy: http://bit.ly/1lWalrT
make sure you select the right result (with ‘recipe’ in the url); it’s usually the first result. That will tell you how much it costs to make that item, and how much that item sells for. unfortunately, you’ll have to scroll down and click on that item, or look on the TP to see how much it costs to buy it. (note: spidy uses sell listing price for everything, so your actual costs will be less if you go the buy order route)

Crafting guide for new player with no funds

sorry, but there is no way you can get enough karma to keep up with your level, or enough crafting materials to be crafting items for your level.
GW2 tends to suffer from the same thing every other game in history suffers from: “I sent you in there to save the princess, and you struggled with hours of fighting and finally defeated the boss, completed the dungeon, and brought her back, let me reward your valor with this weapon that will make that dungeon easy, should you ever want to go back in there.” Basically, the materials required to craft level 50 items are located in areas where you need to be at least level 50 to not die in 1 hit.

Knowing this, I’ll recommend:
use any guide you want. You won’t be able to find everything you need, but you should be able to find most, especially the basic materials. Sell everything you don’t need and use that gold to buy the things you couldn’t find. I liked gw2crafts.net (you can select “Buy List (Only Tier 1)”)
It could be handy for you to figure out how to make some of the things it says to buy, such as “Resilient Green Inscription”.
Or, it looks like the Fast Guides will have you always make the components from scratch, so that might be more what you’re looking for.

Dowel Refinement

I remember way back when I started playing, I wanted to refine the materials as much as they could be so I would be ready to craft. I quickly found out that there was no collections slot for dowels, which kittened me off that I had to store them in my bank, so I never made one again.
they are closer to crafting component than refinement, but fit best under inscriptions imo.

At best, I would estimate you can get 2 blade shards / hour. at that rate, it would take you 462 hours to get enough for an ascended spinal back piece. (also, you can get blade shards from your home instance watchwork sprocket node, if you have one – or go into a party member’s home instance to use theirs)
or there is multiplying them. 1 blade shard + 1 pile shimmering dust + 1 pile glittering dust + 50 watchwork sprocket = 10 blade shard. this would need to be done ~103 times for the cost of ~123g
I would bet you could farm that much gold in about 1/20th the time it would take to farm that many blade shards (you will still need 1 blade shard to start it)

also, I find guild banks the least convenient. mostly just that you have to drag everything one-by-one. with the bank, you can double-click everything and it’ll move in there in like 10 seconds. It is literally faster to move 50 items to the bank, go get your alt character, move them to your alt, than it is to move 50 items into a guild bank.
but guild bank is the cheapest… I think that is intentional (cheapest being least convenient and most expensive being most convenient)

one problem is that exotic is 200 luck and ascended is 500. you could do 10:2, but recipes that do that are always annoying to me. I would of preferred 10 rare = 1 legendary rather than 2 rare = 1 exotic. or, better would be 50 fine = 1 legendary (and 25 master = 1 legendary, etc)

people who have been playing consistently since launch have more AP than I will ever have and I will never catch up.

Daily and monthly AP is capped at 10k and 5k, respectively. Soon, the top people will stop getting AP from those and you can catch up. However, there is quite a bit you will of missed in the living story. Even so, you should be able to get within a couple thousand AP of 1st place given enough time.
which brings up another thing: why do you need to be competitive in AP? The only people that care about it are people who are winning it (I have a guildie in the top-200 and he simply must do every single daily. It sometimes takes him like 2-4 hours). huh. 15.7k AP is 1000th, 15.6k AP is 90%, 3.4k AP is 90%, 3k AP is 80%, 1.8k AP is 70%, 1.1k AP is 60%, 800 AP is 50%.
must be a LOT of never-used accounts out there.
TIL I’m 1,612 AP away from being 1000th place :P

the cheapest options:
guild bank 50 = 10s/space
guild bank 150 = 30s/sapce
guild bank 250 = 42s/space
bank expansion = 1g80s/space
new character with 4×18-slot bags = 87s/space
new character + 3 bag expansions with 7×18-slot bags = 1g33s/space

(yes, 18-slot bags are cheaper than all other options, when you include the cost of buying the character, otherwise 15-slot bags are cheapest per space)

4 rare weapons x 0.2 chance to upgrade to exotic x 0.01 chance to get precursor = 0.008 chance to upgrade rare weapon to precursor
4 rare weapon/armor x (923 exotic lvl 80 weapons/1376 exotic lvl 80 weapons+armor = 0.67) chance to get weapon instead of armor x 0.2 chance to upgrade to exotic x 0.01 chance to get precursor = 0.005366 chance to upgrade rare weapon/armor to precursor
honestly, not that much less. If you can get the armor for half the price of the weapon, it might actually be better.

this is a list of all level 80, crafting level 400 things that artificer can make, ordered by cost to make it ascending.
the first staff on that list is Soldier’s Pearl Quarterstaff. costs 5g14s to make and sells for 5g75s. looking at http://www.gw2spidy.com/item/45965, it costs 3g77s to buy order it.
5g14s is the cheapest price to make a exotic staff. I’m sure there are ones out there for less than 3g77s, so I’m going to say that buying your staff off the TP is the cheaper option.
Not only that, at the difference of 3g vs. 5g, you would spend less coin if you collecting all the materials to make it, sold those materials to the TP, then used those proceeds to buy the staff you want, than to craft the staff yourself.

The exchange actually doesn’t deduct more than the minimum it needs to purchase the amount of gems shown. (or if you like, it instantly refunds the difference).

So you can search for the lowest amount if you’re curious. but you’re protected if you’re just in a hurry to get close enough.

edit for clarity:
If 2g = 21 gems
and 2g 10s = 22 gems..

if you put in 2g 9s the exchange will only take 2g to get you the 21 gems and ‘refund’ the 9s back to you.

just to reinforce it, I decided to test it:
gold before: 95g71s29c
gems before: 312 gems
“I’ll trade 2g to receive 20 gems”
gold after: 93g78s16c
gems after: 332 gems
so it took away 1g93s13c even though I had put in 2g
