Breaking Point: Financial Struggle

it sounds like you need to attend gamblers anonymous more than anything else.
300g = 250 rare greatswords? you’re doing something wrong. you should be paying around 30-40s each (850 rare greatswords).
it currently takes roughly 800g worth of items to craft the collussus. or about 1000g to craft dawn or dusk. you may notice that those are very close to how much they cost on the TP. If you spend 300g to try and get dawn, then that’s a 30% chance of you getting it (if that 300g is applied efficiently).
People make a profit from forging because they spend 30,000g and get 30 precursors – they are relying on average returns. If you only have a 30% chance of getting it rather than a statistical certainty, then that’s called ‘gambling’. in gambling, the house always wins.
“I hate this ordeal where the rich get richer and the poor have to watch as they get richer” – this is not true. A more accurate phrase: “people who know how to get rich get richer and people who don’t have to watch as they get richer”. A small difference, but an important one. Basically, it’s not because someone has a lot of gold that they get more gold, but rather someone has a lot of gold in the first place because they know how to get more gold. If you’re flipping items that never sell, I’m going to guess you made some bad investments. That happens to everyone, believe me. It’s one of the reasons I don’t like flipping. If you really are that intent on being rich, try other money-making strategies. It isn’t easy, so don’t expect it to be easy.
Also, rich people tend to stay rich because they don’t spend their money. You won’t be rich for very long if you’re spending all your gold all the time.

I had an illustrative experience about this over the weekend…
We were running AC, and this one guy downed like 3 times then said “the zerk keeps dying alone…”
there IS a role for non-zerker. keeping the team going when the zerkers die. as a zerker-only player, you don’t see that, because whenever you die, your teammates are soon to follow and it’s just a wipe. throw a few non-zerkers in there, and you’d realize that you die half way through the fight.
I killed an ele in EB yesterday… I was so shocked how quickly they died that I literally ran past their body.

you wouldn’t want a notice to pop up every time you say ‘lfg’ (in english) saying that the spanish gamers can’t see you. the game wouldn’t know who you are trying to talk to.
I guess I just assumed it filted by what language the text was, but now that I think about it, that would be some pretty impressive programming. aside from changing the language you have your game set to, I can’t think of a fix you can do for this.

as a suggestion for the devs: how about different chat commands? like: “/e” posts in english, “/g” posts in german, etc. less drastic than changing your game’s language every time you want to post in different language filters.

Since launch. From your level 10, level 30, and level 50 personal story quest

they also are a random drop from mobs. used to be a lot more common 1.5 years ago, then they got nerfed. in the past year, I’ve found roughly 3 keys from mobs. so only slightly more common than precursors.

WvW/Karma gear salvagable?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Mystic.5934

Mystic.5934

a year ago, karma was far easier to come by. People would routinely have 9 million and nothing to use it on. A while ago they nerfed it to like 1/20 as much income. Basically, right now it wouldn’t be a problem to allow karma items to be salvaged. But back then, that would be a whole LOT of ectos. Anet tends to not change things unless they need to be changed. There isn’t a huge need to let karma items be salvageable, so they don’t change it. I agree they should be, and the devs would probably agree as well, but it’s the changing it from non-salvageable that is the problem – it creates unbalance in the market and such.
as for badges, you could probably make similar arguments, but they wouldn’t be as definitive. for those, I believe it was initially just an oversight. Or they just said “well, we’re not sure, so let’s just make them non-salvageable until we know”.

question: salvaging blue and green

in Black Lion Trading Co

Mystic.5934

100% NOT true. you get the exact same amount of basic crafting materials from all rarities of a given item type.
different item types do give different amounts of basic crafting materials (greatsword gives more than gloves, etc.)
you do get about 3 times more essences of luck when you salvage green compared to blue items (30 luck from green vs. 11 luck from blue).

nevermind how much gold it costs to buy these. they cost 83% as much as a new booster. meaning it is almost the same price to just buy a new exp booster as it is to turn a mf booster into a exp booster (and you’d end up with 2 boosters instead of 1). saving space is also moot, as deleting the first booster then buying the one you want costs almost the same price as a powder.
overpriced.

It’s fairly easy to look at code and think it’s working as intended, just a low drop rate. then you realize you were off by 1 and it couldn’t actually drop. I know I’ve made code that looked beautiful, except I had a > instead of a <, so it didn’t work. point being that when they say something is working as intended, that might just be their default response to anyone saying rng is bugged. Then later they will look into it and find out that there actually was a bug.

“The Additional Crafting License is now available in the Gem Store. This license allows players to have up to three active crafting professions on all characters on their account for the low price of 800 gems in the Upgrades category.”

This is a very appealing product.
However, I have a huge problem of alt characters already having a profession. Some of them I’ve spent well over 300g + other account-bound currencies on (unlocking all recipes, including ascended inscriptions and such).
I would like to be able to move a profession (and everything I have learned for that profession) from one character to another.
or, have those recipes I learned on my guardian also apply towards my mesmer, for example.
There is also a problem of not knowing if this product will be expanded to allow up to 4 per character, then 5, then 6, etc (like what happened to the collection expander). You can’t plan ahead. It costs so much to get a new profession on a new character, and you’d have to shuffle them around again if this product got upgraded.

undercutters/overbidders

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Mystic.5934

Mystic.5934

If we did what Vol said, prices would barely ever change. take ectos for example. If you had to undercut by 1%, you would have to go from 35s80c to 35s44c. buy orders are currently 35s75c. So you could either sell to highest buy order or match lowest seller. The ecto price would stay at exactly 35s80c for a long time because everyone is forced to buy/sell it at the current price. It would only change if someone came along and bought out 5,000 ectos at once – or listed 5,000 ectos at once.

now, it would be possible to have this in mind when designing your % limit. maybe the price must be undercut by more than 5% of the difference between highest buy and lowest sell price? so if the difference is 5c (like the ectos above), the least you could undercut by is 1c (it’s rounded up). But if you’re talking Sunrise, where it’s 3880g and 3000g, then the least you could undercut by would be 44g. what would also be inherent in this system is that even if there are no buy orders, the undercut limit would still be 5% of the sell listing price.

tips required to get to 1000g are different than the tips required to get to 100,000g
1000g you can do things like ecto salvaging, crafting, opening bags, etc.
but for 100,000g, if you tried to salvage items to get there, your finger would fall off. you simply can’t bother with anything where 1 click = 10s.
would you rather he do sessions where he tells people how to go from 1000g to 100,000g? anyone who’s at that level doesn’t need him to tell them what to do. I agree that it’s a much better use of his time to tell people how to go from 10g to 1000g, as there are probably 1000 times as many people interested in that knowledge.

3) Gift of Mastery
4) Precursor + 100 Icy Runestone
5) Gift of Legendary
6) Gift of Magic + Gift of Might + Gift of Fortune
7) Legendary

the reason for it is to find things you normally find while collecting unbuyables (karma, SP, map completion), so that when you go to buy them, you won’t need as much. same for collecting gold for precursor: be collecting T6 mats for Gift of M&M at the same time.
What are you low on besides gold?
map completion is obvious: complete it :P
if you’re low on karma or SP or badges, I recommend EotM train
if you’re low on karma, I recommend underleveled fractals (have your personal level be at least 30, then run fractals that are 10 levels below your personal level – so 20 or so)

if you’re only low on gold, here are the top few gold sources that come to mind (in approximate order of g/hour): TP trading, crafting, guild commendations, daily dungeons, gathering common-yet-expensive crafting materials (platinum, iron, soft wood, etc.), world bosses, champ train. I’m sure there are other farming methods I don’t know of that should be on this short list, but I don’t know of them :P

come to think of it, this might be why the TP is faster than usual. instead of getting live prices, if they update those preview prices periodically, they can be saved and fetched much quicker.
let’s say it’s like checking prices for an iPod. If someone goes out and finds the cheapest available, they can write it down and tell anyone who asks them what the cheapest one is, but that price will eventually get out of date. the alternative would be everyone calling every store to find which one is cheapest. one method is faster, the other is more accurate. you can’t always have both.

85k gold here, 30k gold there, 90k gold over yonder, 10k gold somewhere else. it adds up.
you don’t actually need 20,000 storage slots. just list them as soon as you buy them – store them as items you are selling.
consistent? not really. but it goes like this: out of 100,000 people trying to predict stuff, I guarantee you, someone has gotten 100% of their predictions right.
a little off topic, but it’s a fun story: there was a scam I heard about a while ago… basically, you print out some fliers claiming to know who’ll win the next horse race, and you make many different versions with all the possible winners. mail those to 10,000 race enthusiasts. guaranteed, one version of those fliers will be correct, and several thousand people will get it (the rest will assume you were full of processed meats). wait until the race is over, call up the people who received the correct one, say you can predict the next race and offer to sell them the info, claiming some sort of inability to bet yourself.
Also, a lot of bets are safer than others. pretty much all limited-time things have gone up in price, for example.

Does anyone else realize though that none of these tips will help you break 10k and this guy supposedly has 400,000 gold?

I mean these tips are pretty basic and time-gated to anyone who has been on here for a while.

He himself says he doesn’t even use the material promotion spreadsheets which is pretty obvious because the amount of SP per hour you can farm is pretty low.

most really good TP stuff will get you in the 100-300g/day range. based on that, you would need to do it constantly for like 2000 days to get 400k. you don’t get 100+k in a year by just doing anyone’s profit-making method. you get there by predicting/guessing that silk and linen with go up 1000%, and similar. don’t expect miracles just from some tips. what’s the quote? “no one ever made millions by working hourly”

You are absolutely right, that site is difficult to understand

Is it me or is it not really a spreadsheet but a website? I’m seeing formulas rather than the values.

i.e. the first item, iron ore, has this in the Profit field:
-(1)(9)(45) (-48%)
-(10)(94)(50)/SP

??

1g9s45c loss per promote or 10g94s50c per skill point…

Far far easier to remake it so that 1s = 100 and 1g = 10000. Makes it so much more readable than parentheses.

I always found the parenthesis to be easier… especially when you start mixing in text:
“(15)(63) return = (11)(82) profit = 310.5%”
vs.
“15s63c return = 11s82c profit = 310.5%”
It kinda highlights where the prices are. It could easily be done either way. Is that something I should add?

i.e. the first item, iron ore, has this in the Profit field:
-(1)(9)(45) (-48%)
-(10)(94)(50)/SP

??

that means for every time you forge iron ore from copper ore, you lose 1g9s45c, which is a 48% loss. The recipe calls for 1/10 of a SP (1 philo stone), so that’s 10g94s50c loss per SP. it makes more sense on one that’s profitable:
(3)(64) (28%)
(36)(48)/SP
each forging is a profit of 3s64c, which is a 28% profit, and because only 1/10 a SP is used, that’s 36s48c per SP.
Ideally, you’d want high gold per SP, high profit, and high % profit. But you can’t always get that, so instead it just tells you everything and you can decide for yourself how much work you want to do.
you know… I’ll add an option where it will only show the ones that are profitable. hrmmm… I feel like ordering it by profit is doable, but not so helpful (things like arachnophobia and the legendaries would always be on top)

You’ll notice the vast majority are -profit (lose you gold on average). but there are still a handful that don’t. All the recipes that are profitable to either sell or use are highlighted.

It is a website. tables are just really easy to use

I could have it spell everything out, but that would take a lot more space and isn’t really necessary once you know what each column is. I made a mock-up for comparison here (imagine if all 259 forge recipes looked like that)

Sorry to sorta hijack your thread, Vedordra. It is kinda along the same subject…

What can I do with account bound items?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Mystic.5934

Mystic.5934

trophy? like, grey items? take them to a merchant, click ‘sell junk’, and you get some coin for them. merchants have an icon on the map that looks like a small pile of gold coins.
there are a couple items that are unsellable – those are event items. They are used for events or hearts for things like ‘help me gather rock elemental stones’. There would be someone nearby who you can turn them into to collect. If you can’t find them or missed the window to turn them in, they could just be deleted.

so you picked the armor with a weight that your profession can’t use? my first suggestion would be to put it into your bank, and maybe in the future you’ll make a new character that can use it. also, be sure to right-click those items and select ‘add to wardrobe’ or something like that. that will permanently make it so you can use that armor’s skin on anything you want, so you can’t lose the look.

In general, most account-bound items can’t have much done with them. A lot of the time, the only thing you can do is salvage them for a few crafting materials. There are other things you can do, however. such as throwing 4 similar items into the Mystic Forge and you get a random thing of that type out, which you can sell. Sometimes that method is advisable. But for special one-time items such as the ones you got from the deluxe upgrade, I would be sure you could use the skin again in the future. Sometimes, learning the skin for one weight class will give you the skin for all 3 on these special items.

Karma to Gold

As you can tell, turning karma into gold at a good return is very very time-intensive. mystic conduit would make it a lot better, but still not great. I believe these karma armors are around 400 karma? then 1600 for 4 of them, coats give an average of 3 scraps each, that’s 13s57c per 1600 karma or 8s48c per 1000 karma or 1g per 11,790 karma. So 2 million karma would get 169g. That requires buying 5,000 items. maybe 150 per trip? 33 trips. 1,250 forgings.

for comparison, I believe the orrian boxes give about 1g per 30,000 karma.

btw, there’s also beaded weapons. they give about 30-40s profit per 1575 karma, but require a lot of time as well (buy thousands of sun beads, then craft piles of weapons)

champ farm

Well, there’s your problem. champ farming is somewhere around the 6th-most lucrative thing you could be doing to get gold. to name a few other things:
TP trading
daily dungeons
guild commendations
world bosses
even gathering platinum or iron ore has higher gold/hour

this is why they nerfed queensdale champs. because it gave a false impression to new players of what they should be doing.
also, there are surprisingly few things that magic find actually affects. for starters, it does NOT affect those bags the champs drop. or any chest you open. It basically only affects items that come directly off mobs. So unless you’re killing large amounts of loot-dropping mobs, magic find isn’t doing you much good.

From all of those, that’s not even a 1% chance of getting it! 6 gambits = 7 tickets per boss = 85 bosses. maybe 2 min per boss = 2h50m. at 1% chance, that’s 1000g * 0.01 = 10g. so 10g in 2h50m = 3.5g/hour. mathematically not that bad compared to champ train / world bosses, but 99% chance of zero payout = not taking that risk.

Should I gamble ?

normally I recommend never gambling unless you’re in it to gamble and not actually expecting to get anything useful out of it.
however, it seems that to you the choice is either gamble or give up. In that case, I would say gambling is better. Because the outcome of gambling is either you get it or you don’t. So if you have the choice between get it or don’t get it and give up, I would go with the former.
just so you know, based on drop rate research done by people on reddit, Spark is looking at about 1100g per Spark when trying to gambling it from the forge (although, this is not counting the daggers you get out of it that aren’t Spark). If you are only going to throw in 500g, then you’ll have a 45% chance of getting it. approximately a flip of a coin if you’ll get it or not.
also, it looks like the current cheapest thing to use to try and get Spark is crafting the Assassin’s Krait Ripper, followed by Sentinel’s Krait Ripper and Carrion Krait Ripper. (they are rare daggers; costs about 46s/dagger to make).

Tips for portalling?

I give portals all the time. I’ve been tipped exactly once for 20s. It felt a bit better than someone who says ‘ty’, but not by much. it’s when people don’t say/do anything at all that it makes you want to not do it anymore. but beyond that, just saying ‘ty’ is all that I would say is needed. Then again, I rarely announce in chat that I’ll be portaling people to x from y, then go back and forth for a few minutes – I will more of will get to a crystal, drop a portal, jump to the ground, drop the other portal, run off to the next crystal.

I’m thinking that OP is also looking for a few things not already mentioned:
- fewer summons (they clutter the screen)
- targeting skills, including ground-targeting (I see just fine, and I can sometimes have trouble with finding the cursor)
adding in these, longbow/shortbow ranger is the first that comes to mind. maybe rifle warrior? (I’m not as familiar with warriors, so iuno). just be sure to turn auto-target on.
one of the immortal builds might be interesting for this. immortal mesmer, for example. no such thing as ‘tank’, but there are builds out there that get pretty close.
why no dodging?

I’ve been working on a website that does a lot of gold-making calculations for you. I’ve been on the fence about making this public for a while. Until now, I’ve just told people who contact me directly. But I think at this point I would get more enjoyment from people appreciate something I made than making more gold. Also, you have to figure that maybe only 500 unique people will even see this thread, and only 20% of those will read this post, and 80% of those won’t care enough to even click the link, meaning that only 20 or so people would actually get there, much less do anything with it. It just seems a shame that we all do the same work independently. So here goes:

http://legendsrpg.com/gw2.php?forge=yes (direct link for material promotion in the MF)

I’m told it’s not the easiest to understand what’s going on :P. I tend to try and fit as much info into as small a space as possible, so it makes sense to me, but confusing to someone not familiar with it. There’s help info on the bottom of each page. I recommend browsing it carefully and starting small.
It gets prices from gw2tp.com as they seem to be updated more frequently than spidy. also, the file that’s downloaded is much smaller and quicker to go through as it only has the item id and prices. The prices do need to be fetched manually – there’s a link for that. I could make that automatic, but it’s currently not used nearly enough to merit up-to-date data 24/7.

I still update it to clarify, adjust, add, etc. If you find errors or have a suggestion, let me know. Also, if you want to help: drop rate research with huge sample sizes is greatly appreciated (most needed would be bags, material promotion, and precursor forging).

all sound stuff here.
can agree with Nike. A while ago I used spidy’s sell listing count to estimate the number of Eternities sold via sell listing in the 24 hours before a person’s post to be about 3 [and OP shouldn’t have a problem selling theirs] and JS came in an hour later and said it was actually 9. (but he didn’t mention if it was buy+sell listings or just sell listings.
