Mirage Mirrors improvements

@glenndevis – One of my reworked shatters would actually be a low CD shatter that would shatter up to 3 mirrors on the field to give you mirage cloak on demand (stacking with how many mirrors were shattered). This would solve the problem of having to go get the mirrors, but leaves the option to go get them one at a time if that would work better for you. It would go a long way remove this annoyance from the mirrors imo.

So since 2012 mesmer has been gutted and nothing was done? Is this the reason why mesmer has the lowest dps? The dev still believe mesmer has high dps since 2012?

Well, in a way.

Or in more detail, they designed a spec which intentionally has a lot of elements which frustrate enemies in PvP. Blink, stealth, fake targets, condition pressure with conditionals, lots of defensive elements, projectile reflect, CC.

Then ofc in turn, everyone complains about them, so they balance it by making them weaker. But since the spec was built around being frustrating in PvP, at the point where they are “tolerable”, they’re also underpowered. Which then shows in PvE.

To fix this, they gave us a support spec which has no alternative. Now everyone needs us, all of a sudden.

But when the time comes around to give us another spec, all of these inherent problems resurface. Nothing was ever “solved”.

I was saying this throughout HoT, chrono was nothing but a bandaid spec for problems with core mesmer design. Yet almost everyone just ignored me when I said that. And here we are when we get a new elite spec, and these problems show their face again and now more people seem to care (which is good, I guess).

Core mesmer needs to be rebalanced, and ideally its mechanic needs to be fundamentally changed (either shatters, illusions, or both), and then the elite specs we have need to be rebalanced around that. But we can’t keep the huge problems with core mesmer design and have workable elite specs that aren’t way overpowered. The problems are just too big.

How is 3 short range teleports with only 20 secs recharge time not “Elite-caliber”? It’s the one thing Mirage got right, leave it be.

It needs higher damage and Range.

So far Mirage is a condi spec, in that theme I would rather deal a third stack of confusion (orpossibly blind for some extra synergy with ineptitude) and increase the range.

I honestly think the majority of these elites were rushed through.

They definitely were. There were 2, maybe 3(?), devs working on all 9 elites. Taking 2 years between HoT and PoF, and 3-4.5 (lets say 4 as a good middle ground) elites per person gives them half a year to not only design but also implement, test and balance the elites. And it shows. There aren’t enough people on the elite spec design team nor on teh balance team (and I hope to god they aren’t the same team. But given our previous balance patches I wouldn’t be surprised if they were the same team).

Since you don’t explain why I am forced to presume you are wrong and everybody else is right.

Mirage enables things you normally couldnt do, like stack 20 confusion on enemies with cover conditions without trouble whilst still having good options for survivability.

Except Condi Chrono can do that too. With Moa, CS split condi burst it’s possible.

I said without trouble. And with chrono youre not going to be able to survive nearly as well.

You honestly think chrono has worse survivability than mirage? What are you smoking, cause I want some of that.

And to stack that in any reasonable amount of time requires you to have clones out, which are stupidly easy to kill. Just lay an AoE at your feet and they are dead before they can attack….

Seriously though, if Anet wants deadeye to be a sniper, then thematically it makes more sense for malice to build slower when you are attacking, to encourage long wait times while you “scout/sight” your enemy and then let off a really strong attack.

I don’t want this in game by any means, but it would fit the sniper theme better tbh

Honestly, it’s just becoming increasingly obvious having two people design eight of the nine specializations ended up being a mistake on ArenaNet’s part, at least not without having more feedback from the community in the design process.

No matter how talented Gee and Huang are at designing these specializations, there are severe issues with multiple specializations that need a lot more work before they’re truly ready. Obviously Deadeye is one of the more apparent examples, but you can really look at most of these specs and say there are fundamental design issues with most of them.

Dropping these specializations into the middle of a PvP season with the expansion launch will be an unmitigated disaster. They’re giving themselves so little time to polish these specializations, and I think the expansion and the game overall will greatly suffer for it.

Yea, we ideally need 1 dev per class for next time. Or each dev only doing 2 classes (with 1 dev only doing 1).

Also I find it funny that one of the most ardent defenders of this asinine damage doesn’t even understand how to correctly build malice, considering he thinks it involves being stealthed for over 30 seconds……

you can move with superspeed when using mirage cloak. I’m no expert but I’d say it’s about the same distance travelled as roll. Also, there’s that small tiny itsy bitsy thing that you can cast when using this evade and choose to stand still. But sure, it’s not better than roll. Just… different. Yup.

log in , test it yourself
you are not an expert
but you dont have to be this lazy with empty words like "id say xx is same distance " in your own head .

truth is it is not same . and you can only move forward for benefit from superspeed .

The math works out. Superspeed is 400 units a second, so in 3/4 of a second you can go 300 units forward. Dodge rolling travels 300 units. So at least if you are moving forward when you dodge and keep moving forward, you would travel teh same distance. Its a shame this doesn’t work while moving backwards or sideways though, that should be looked into.

The 12 second duration is due to a new shatter I’m trying to balance for mirage. It would shatter all mirrors on the field, but if they only lasted for 4 seconds it would make it stupidly difficult to ever have more than 1 or 2 in a real scenario when you shatter. Plus, I don’t like passive gameplay like that, I like the aspect that you have to go shatter the mirror to get mirage cloak, it gives real counterplay to them, but your suggestion removes all counterplay to mirrors.

I’d honestly be fairly happy with Mirage if these changes went through. It would allow us to pull off 4 illusion ambush attacks without taking infinite horizon, make mirrors actually useful, and it increases the usefulness of ambush attacks themselves without (hopefully) making them broken. It also buffs axe auto by increasing its speed (its fairly slow considering the low damage).

I’d also like to see the shatters changed as well, but that will go in a separate thread, because I’d rather see these changes go through than have someone get caught up over new shatter mechanics.

I don’t think I’m advocating for as drastic changes as some other people on here are, I tend to think that these are more realistic with what could happen between now and release (though I am probably biased). I’m not trying to redesign the mirage, merely improve it with as few changes as possible.

Highest Priority
Improve Mirage Mirrors. See my thread here (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/Mirage-Mirrors-improvements/first#post6708664) for details. But its just increasing the duration of the mirrors to 12 seconds, and making them apply mirage cloak to you and all illusions when they are shattered

Traits

  • Mirage Cloak – Increase ambush attack window to 1.5 seconds
  • Nomad’s Endurance – Added effect, increases vigor’s effectiveness by 50% (so +75% endurance regeneration). Vigor also increases ferocity by 150 points (this is optional. I’d rather see the increased vigor effectiveness over this if I had to choose 1 or the other)
  • Self Deception (Potentially renamed) – Using a deception skill causes all clones to use an ambush skill immediately. (Might be too strong and may need an ICD of around 5 seconds)
  • Mirrored Axes – The summoned axes apply 1 stack of confusion and 1 stack of torment
  • Sand Shards – Just a comment, but wtf is this linked to bleeding and wtf does it apply bleed? Of the entire elite spec, the only place we apply bleed are the axe auto chain and sand shards. I seriously don’t understand why this trait seems to prioritize bleed when the elite spec itself barely has any at all.

Skills

  • Split Surge – Reduce cast time to 1/4 or 1/2 second, remove ICD, add a small aftercast ( absolutely no more than 1/4 second). As a pure power cleave attack, the least you can do is let us “spam” it, especially considering its pathetic damage (which is even more apparent given it has no other effects, at all).
  • Chaos Vortex – If possible, increase targets to 5 enemies and 5 allies, allowing it to both buff you and your party while still damaging 5 enemies.
  • Mirage thrust – Increase daze to 1 second, remove daze from clones’ attacks. Increase the damage 250%.
  • Ether Barrage – Decrease cast time to 1 second.
  • Imaginary Axes – Remove the delay on the axes, double power damage.
  • Lacerating Chop – Reduce cast time to 1/4 second. Lower bleed duration to 1.5 seconds to compensate
  • Ethereal Chop – Reduce cast time to 1/4 second, lower torment duration to 1.5 seconds to compensate
  • Crystal Sands – Make the power damage inherent to the AoE field, increase the number of crystal shards that come flying in, but limit how many can hit an enemy
  • Sand through Glass – Change evade to mirage cloak just to synergize with the mirage traitline more (ie potentially giving regen and prot, allowing you to indirectly trait this skill)
  • Jaunt – Increase range to 600

Honestly, they suck right now. Hell I haven’t even seen Azukas defend them in their current iteration.

That said I think they only need a few small tweaks to be useful:

1 – They should last for 12 seconds after being summoned

2 – Once shattered, they should apply mirage cloak to both you AND all illusions as a baseline effect

Together these two things would already massively improve the mechanic. The first change would allow more tactical use of them (say to not be forced to walk through an AoE to get to them, since you would have time to wait. Or to setup an attack instead of beign forced to shatter it almost immediately). The second change would greatly reduce the need for Infinite Horizon, as it would give us a readily available way to force our clones to use ambush attacks. However, due to the rather limited supply of mirrors, it would still be balanced, and infinite horizon would still have a place (due to dodging giving out mirage cloak as well).

I just can’t believe that instead of looking at what kind of content the game has then looking at what Mesmer has and looking at what it needs, they just made a spec around the name Mirage.

Seriously not one person stopped for a second at any point in making it and went ‘What are we doing here’?

Yea, this stung quite a bit. The other specs were designed around the functionality they wanted to give the core classes. Mirage was literally designed around a name. And it tells. The overall theme is strong, but the execution is weak.

Am I the only one at least a little pleased?

in Mesmer

OriOri.8724

One thing to note is that I’m almost entirely sure that the ambushes are balanced around Infinite Horizon, which is kind of counter-intuitive to how major traits and class mechanics should be built. The reason I say that is that all of the ambushes are pretty lackluster and weak when done with just you. You can trait them to be decent, but the only way they’re “out of control” is if you chain them with multiple clones. They aren’t ever actually powerful by themselves.

Mirage feels like a non-elite line as it is now. I’m not saying that the weapon, utilities, or mechanics are bad in concept, they just aren’t tuned to Mesmer… or the game, really. The spec doesn’t need to be scrapped, but it’s not polished. Things need to get smoothed out, moved around, and upgraded, to be completely honest. In the current state I don’t see it having many viable options.

Of course they are all balanced around having 3 clones up (even though some of them still really suck, even with that). Everything about mesmer isbalanced around the assumption that you will have 3 illusions up at all times. Our sustained damage is kitten, because we might have 3 phantasms up dealing damage. Our burst damage is weak for the investment required.

First impression: Wow.. Mesmer really didn’t get much this time. Hope it gets better.

…[Illusionary Ambush] , [Axes of Symmetry] and [Jaunt] all failed to remove Deadeye’s Mark. This renders deception basically useless against a Deadeye. Once again, Mesmers are being set out as thief food.

Currently deadeye is not the best build, so maybe deception skills could be not that viable but still could be able to deal with him.

It’s a first impression, but i really doubt that mesmers will have hard times against deadeye…

AFAIK axes of symmetry is the only skill which is supposed to forcefully detarget you, the other two don’t do that. That aside, the forced detargetting is kind of pointless if we stay marked, as it clearly identifies us. There is reason to be upset over it.

OriOri.8724

I agree that mirrors should last longer than they do. Lasting 10 seconds allows you to use them pretty leisurely, and allows you to setup a better play. Right now I don’t think they last nearly long enough.

Self deception seems pretty kitten, even for an adept trait. Mesmer has never had any problem getting clones out, so why did we get another kittenty clone generation trait? And why is this one so much more clunky than others? It has multiple requirements to it (needing to use both a specific skill type AND have exactly 2 illusions out. Compare that to core trait DE……) to share functionality of several traits we already have.

This trait needs to be changed pretty bad. Make it actually buff our deception skills. Could be as simple as just increasing their direct damage based on how many illusions we have out (say 15% per illusion?), or could be something along the lines of making ambush attacks unblockable? Or anything but what it currently is.

Infinite Horizon Needs to be Baseline

in Mesmer

Posted by: OriOri.8724

OriOri.8724

I agree in the context of the current, rather lackluster, ambush attacks. But instead of taking infinite horizon baseline, I would rather considerably buff our personal ambush attacks, and then nerf the clone ambush attacks to be true additions (something like a few extra stacks of conditions, or a bit more power damage/daze on sword etc… nothing too substantial), so that it turns into a real choice instead of choosing to give up a huge source of mirage’s damage potential.

Helseth's review of mirage

in Mesmer

Posted by: OriOri.8724

OriOri.8724

I think its obvious that the gs ambush is a joke, but the sword one isn’t much better honestly with that cast time.

I didn’t have time today to actually play a match after figuring out all the skills, so I can’t really comment on the heal, but the healing per pulse is pretty small. so I’m not surprised its not that great. Its an interesting concept for a heal skill.

Jaunt was underwhelming. Limited range, fairly small damage.

Even though I knew what to expect, it was weird to not move backwards when dodging. Will definitely take some getting used to for me, but that’s not a bad thing at all.

The symmetry between mirror images, axe, and infinite horizon is pretty kitten good right now, though truthfully due to the ammunition mechanic on axe 2 you don’t even need mirror images. It can load up a lot of confusion/torment pretty quickly, especially if you are taking mirrored axes. That said, its pretty telegraphed, and a channeled block could virtually eliminate that if it was timed right.

The utilities are fun, but all around meh. Crystal sands does ok-ish, but from my understanding it only does damage if the crystals hit someone? So a 20 second CD in order to really get a mirage mirror = 1 sec of mirage cloak out of it is underwhelming. Maybe change it to just deal the power damage to anyone standing inside the AoE, and then have the crystals just apply confusion if they hit a target?

The ambush is a nice skill.

Sand through glass is the only stunbreak mirage brings, and its on a 30 sec CD. I don’t know how I feel about that, as I don’t think its strong enough to replace blink. Maybe change the 1/2 sec evade to 1/2 mirage mirror? That would give synergy with infinite horizon (giving it some offensive options if you trait for it) and some of the defensive traits that mirage has (prot + regen on mirage cloak).

Mirage advance is cool. But without getting to play a match I can’t really get a feel for how useful it is.

One thing I would really like to see is to have ambush skills be unblockable. Either have a trait be changed to make them unblockable, or make our personal ambush skills unblockable (but the clone ones can be blocked). And buff the GS ambush skill substantially. It should be doing way more power damage, and then the clone version could deal less damage but possibly apply a stack of bleeding or something.

But only with a small addendum to your first two points: if I recall, the Fractals can contain manifestations from either past, present and future, so it might be that there’s still some real Dessa and Arrk out there. Also I’m interested in whether or not the Challenge Motes play any part in this, since they went out of their way to develop a whole new character (the Harbinger) instead of simply having a mote put there.

The harbinger, as his name implies, was probably formed due to Arrks experiments disrupting the fractals themselves. I doubt he plays any more role than that, especially since this particular storyline is now concluded

@Me Games Ma – Yea, there isn’t any real argument that those are the best two ambush attacks lol I happen to like them pretty well as is. Its the other ones, sword and GS, that are the problem. They are pathetically weak.

But we still have the problem that they have a longer cast time than the duration of evade we get with mirage cloak. This means that you could burst down scepter clones before they even finish ether barrage, due to the cast being twice as long as the duration of a dodge.

Looking at this again, mirage mirrors will apply 1 second of mirage cloak versus 3/4 sec from dodging. So, maximum all cast times should be 1 second imo. And this is mostly because so much of that damage is still tied up in being able to get off multiple ambush attacks at once via clones, so if they can be burst down before even finishing the cast, it defeats the purpose.

OriOri.8724

I think people are forgetting the ambush skills can be traited to activate on illusions, so gs is 470×3×4 with all active illusions +power and crit modifiers.

So? Look at the weapon skills for some of the other PoF specs. They are doing that level of damage by themselves, with no buildup needed (yet we have to get 3 clones up, which while easy enough by using both a utility slot and a weapon skill is still a hoop other classes don’t have to go through), and then can also sometimes deal even more damage/have bonus effects for meeting certain conditions. Just because a 3 clone ambush attack can be on par with a regular attack from other specs (seriously, why are so many people ok with this?) doesn’t make it balanced. For that buildup it should be dealing more damage.

Look at the rest of mirage’s skills. Our shatters didn’t get buffed, our utility skills and Axe skills deal pathetic damage. Its obvious that the damage issupposed to come from ambush skills, because there is no other place for it to come from.

If you are talk about dps this is probabily pve talk. And in pve mirage will bring an upgrade to base mesmer in terms of dps.
150 c dmg on vigor
A new utility thats not a dead slot
And Axe seems fine
20% c durarion

I dunno why everybody is crying for dmg on ambush skills. Not like they are easly accessed to make them a big dps increase even if they were backstab lvl of dmg.. And plus, clones dont dmg….
For me ambush skills should be all in the line of sword one. Utility. Like daze leap or etc utility. Pure dmg is boring and wont be a big deal.

Now if you mean power dmg, going mirage is a dps loss for pve. Our dmg mods are spread on domi duel and illu. Mirages seems to be a condi utility spec. In pvp i can see the utility for power shatter, but in pve its an irrelevant utility, so nothing to offer here. And thats fine. Chrono didnt offer a dps upgrade to mesmer but a support instead, and chrono is fine.
Maybe next spec will be a power oriented spec. Maybe with interrupts amd such… Mesmer have potential there…

Mesmer has always had low DPS, why do you want to keep it low? Mirage, especially the mirage cloak mechanic and ambush skills, are a great way to give mesmers that higher damage. But you are wrong abotu several things here:

  • Mirage will have plentiful access to mirage cloak. I don’t know why you think it will be scarce. On dodge, plus plenty of vigor. Plus our heal skill and 2 utilities drop mirage mirrors, on top of a 3rd utility just flat out giving us mirage cloak. Its not going to be hard to come by.
  • We have already seen with the scepter ambush attack that its weaker on clones, so its safe to assume that the other ones will be weaker as well. Which means that the sword and GS ambush attacks will probably not be dealing even auto attack levels of damage when used by clones.

Dropping huge balance patches mid season is ultimately healthy. It helps ensures that the best players, those who can adapt and don’t just memorize a rotation someone else found, stay at the top. Yea, those sword and GS ambush skills are extremely underwhelming. I get that they want to push us towards a condition build (though I don’t know why), but those skills are not nearly strong enough to be a DPS power spec. And sword’s ambush doesn’t make sense, is each clone going to summon yet another clone when it uses this skill? Will they replace themselves with the new clone? How is that going to work?

That’s a good question – will Sword clones essentially duplicate themselves if Infinite Horizon is traited? At least we’ll know in a couple of days.

Scepter clones don’t pop out new clones. Obviously the sword clones will just leap and daze, they don’t self-multiply unless it’s bugged.

Scepter clones also only use ether bolt, they don’t use teh full chain. So they never use a skill that summons a clone.

The sword ambush skill is unprecedented in that, afaik, its the first skill our clones will ever use that is also supposed to summon another clone. Also, will the clone that we summon with this skill then perform the ambush attack and be summoned with mirage cloak as well?

It does defend you. It just does other stuff.

Seriously, Mirage Cloak is Distortion that we can get without shattering plus it enables Ambush attacks. It’s literally all upside when compared to a normal dodge.

If it was just Distortion, I’d be more happy because we’d get synergy with other traits. I just can’t help but feel we aren’t getting something that feels super “mesmer” in this spec.

More so, it doesn’t feel like we’re getting a lot to play with.

With Chronomancer, we could all speculate about how we’d use the Continuum Shift to double output, and that was interesting. I don’t feel something as game-changing as that is in Mirage. I may be wrong, and maybe I just have to play it for myself and see more of the Ambushes (since we’ve only seen condition clones).

Distortion makes you unable to contest a point. Mirage cloak is significantly stronger in PvP scenarios than distortion due to that fact alone.

I agree with 1 of musu’s points in that Firebrand getting 750 stats while under the effects of quickness, as a minor no less, is beyond absurd. Just ridiculous powercreep. That should be toned down to be more in line with what other classes can get on minors.

I do not agree with pulsing might when we have vigor, it would make the trait pretty useless in coordinated groups that already have no problem reaching 25 stacks. It would be better to just give us condition damage and power damage instead.

I dont think phantasms will have ambush skills, for several reasons:

- Phantasms dont have the #1 wep skill to turn into ambush
- Not a single ambush phantasm skill datamined so far
- Seems just odd for example a sword phantasm performing a scepter ambush

I think phantasms wont have ambush skills yet i do hope they benefit from the trait/utility. Something like instead of casting an ambush skill phantasms would have double damage in the next attack. Or they could get their attacks refreshed for insta follow up.

Doesnt’ mean much when we haven’t even datamined all of the ambush attacks for core mesmer weapons

The version of PoM that synergized with summoning 2 phantasms got flat out removed not just gutted, then IR also got gutted, and chronophantasma was nerfed a long time ago.

It would not be broken to reduce the CD back to what it used to be.

Suggestions wanted: fractal currency sinks

I think mystic clovers are a good option. currently there is no PvE way to obtain them, yet both WvW and PvP have reliable ways to obtain clovers regularly. So adding a daily limited supply to fractal vendors seems like a good idea to me. It would also slightly lower demand for coins, which will help put a ceiling on high their price will continue to climb

The memory box is really nice! I just hope it isn’t time limited. No real reason to do that, since a lot of people are probably willing to spend gems on them to get some items from LWS1.

What is the deal with people and wanting a bard class?

Waiting for the Next League Season

The next season starts on 8/22. This does mean that the new elite specs will show up mid-season. Should be interesting.

Are we getting another balance patch before PoF releases? WP mentioned on his stream that core ele was getting barrier on some skills and that power reaper was going to be buffed, yet those changes weren’t seen in the last balance patch.

I did forget about druids F5. But then again, the proposal was to place this on core mesmer, wasn’t it? It wouldn’t be an elite spec F skill, but a core mesmer one.

@Levetty – That guy doesn’t know what he is talking about, I don’t think its worth it to go through his post history for anything tbh

Class identity...

2 – They lose the least amount of DPS by switching their gear over to tank since their DPS is so low to begin with.

This is where you are so so so wrong. Chronos are good dps as any other class, when you consider ALL their things. Not only how much they can swing their sword, but also that they can instabreak most of the breakbars, that they put there vulnerability, that they can have 5+ AoE spells that do deal more damage the more targets are there, also alacrity for everyone else, making their spells faster….

People do their dps tests usually not good enough. In sterile conditions. Then their numbers are normally totally away from real ones. And you judge based on that?

(When I go to spvp, where it counts your damage and shows it, I usually have top damage with my chrono. Why? Because I am kittenty dps? Do you really think so?)

ALL classes are capable of ALL roles, they are nearly balanced, so it does not matter which class you use. YOUR SKILL with that one class matters. (Sadly this is not recognized by raid and meta-noo… eh…meta-fanatics)

Chronos can still break breakbars while doing their alacrity and quickness rotations.

Chronos can still perform their alacrity and quickness rotations while tanking.

Again, chrono loses the least amount of DPS of any class by being the tank.
