Well, people keep speculating about why HoT was $50 at all, saying that the free game for new players is factored in, or because Warlords of Draenor was $50 (the most expensive expansion in WoW’s history, and tied w/ HoT for the most expensive MMO expansion ever, atm), or that maybe there is just a mountain of new content that Anet hasn’t shown us yet that makes this kitten expansion.
But, if you go back to January 8 (a few weeks BEFORE HoT was even announced), you can find a a 2015 Yearly Projections statement made by Daewoo Securities, currently the LARGEST stock brokerage and investment bank in South Korea, in which they said that NCSoft would release an expansion called Heart of Thorns (weeks before the announcement) and then projected that Anet would sell at least 2 million copies of the expansion at $50 each. This is not a “guess” by analysts about the positive outcome, this was the largest brokerage in Korea saying “You need to sell 2 million copies of this expansion for $50 each or you will NOT make your quarterly projections for the end of 2015”.
You can read a summary of this on Daewoo Securities website here: http://goo.gl/ziO33b
This is essentially like Goldman Sachs telling a company “You must raise the price of your products by 15% this year, or your stock price will drop”. Goldman Sachs, of course, has no authority to actually raise those prices, but as the largest investment bank in the US, they can do more than just predict how stock prices will move.
So that’s it. $50 is the price. It kind of has to be. Maybe Anet will throw in some extras, I don’t know. But if you’re wondering “Why are they giving away the core game w/ the expac”, it’s it NOT entirely because they want to increase the game’s population in order to give everyone playing a better experience. It’s not even about adding more customers to the Gem Store, or anything like that. NCSoft was given a mandate from the most powerful investment bank in the country that essentially said “You must sell 2 million copies of this product at $50 each just to meet yearly projections… or else!”
So yeah, don’t expect a price drop.

I get that the price of the expansion is €44,99, and that the game is included just to avoid the problems you had with for instance a certain other MMO Whose Name Shall Not Be Named which required you to buy core game + 3 expansions to enjoy the 4th expansion…
But how is this fair to those that actually went out and bought GW2 core, in anticipation of HoT? Those that spent €35ish now spent that for “nothing”?
A bundle offer is great, but there should be an “upgrade only” option for those that don’t need the core game.It was stated that Support would grant HoT to people who recently purchased the game. Probably within like 2 weeks or so, I’m guessing.
The terms are that they get a refund on their current account(only) and receive a blank slate copy of HoT/GW2.
Seriously, that is the offer?
I was guessing they’d just refund the $10-$40 they paid for the core game after they’d applied the HoT upgrade.

As surprised as I was when I first saw the $50 price for a base expansion with absolutely no extras, when I sat back and thought about I realized I probably missed some rather obvious foreshadowing of this on EAnet’s part. I mean, earlier the same day, a few hours before the expansion pre-order went online, they added this to the Gem Store: https://youtu.be/E4_iw5VwG7w
Yes, that is exactly what you think it is: a digital pet rock. For $5.00. A real-life pet rock shouldn’t cost $5.00, much less a pet rock that doesn’t actually exist! I feel like this was a test they used to gauge how much they could charge us for the expac, and how little they could get away with including in the basic pack. Like they said, "Ok, let’s add a digital pet rock to the game a few hours ahead of pre-orders, and for every 100 people who buy this thing, we’ll just add another $1 to the price. Also, for every 500 people who add it, we’ll simply take away one of the free extras we were planning to put in the standard pack (like character slots), until there’s nothing left but the expansion itself and maybe some crummy, bare minimum thing like a Title or Beta Access that most players won’t even use. Oh, and if we sell 1000 of these digital pet rocks, maybe we can do away with any physical box version altogether! Make the Collector’s Edition digital, call it “Ultimate” instead, charge double the price of any modern AAA title, and just include a few digital bonuses, since GW2 players love that stuff! It’s just a few more lines of code anyway, just give them some junk that we’ve already got lying around, like a vine wall or something, it won’t even cost us a penny! I mean, come on, if they’re willing to buy a pet rock IN A GAME, then I assume these people will pay for anything!"

If they add a slot the purchase would be a nobrainer to me. Without it´s just a rip-off EA-STYLE….
I don´t wanna pay for the failure of Wildstar and those other kittenty NC games…
Ive never seen something of this low character before, not even from EA. Ive never seen a map pack for example where you’d have to delete access to another map from a prior game. You have to pay extra to not lose content you paid $40 for already. Gross.
EAnet……………………..
I haven’t seen this question asked yet in the uproar. I have the game already, so by definition of “comes with core game” I should get a second core game account serial, right?
This has been answered 100 times already, but no. If you already own the game, the only way to claim your “Free Bonus” game is to start a whole new account. The moment you apply your Expansion purchase to an existing account, the “Free Bonus” game vanishes forever.
However… according to the Official FAQ, there will apparently be a Boxed Version of HoT. Maybe you’ll get 2 CD or something in that. Or maybe they just haven’t change the FAQ yet, who knows?

BTW, if someone buys the expansion and Anet are including the original game again, does that mean that someone can give that original game to a friend?

The notion that the base game is free with the expansion is just marketing doublespeak. Everybody who purchases the expansion is paying for the base game in addition to the expansion regardless of whether they own it or not. Reminds me of microsoft claiming that internet explorer is “free with windows”. It isn’t free just has the price included.
Anet pulled a bait and switch on players who purchased the base game with the understanding that is was required in order to play the expansion.
Anet should look forward to months of complaining and abuse rather than hype for the expansion.
what are you basing you claims on exactly?
why is it marketing double speak in your opinion?
You still need help understanding how “Double-Speak” works?

According to the Official HoT FAQ, there will also be a boxed edition of the expansion: https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/105801626-Guild-Wars-2-Heart-of-Thorns-FAQ
Maybe you can get a separate code or CD in that?

Wait, is there a boxed edition, or not? If so, does it come with a separate CD or code for the base game, in addition to the Expansion?

I still don’t understand why people keep saying “$50 is the average price of an expansion”. Where does that come from??? Is the price of WoW’s latest expansion just automatically the “average” price?
Here’s a list of the Top 10 MMO Expansions:
http://mmoatk.com/mmo-videos/top-10-best-mmorpg-expansions-mmo-attack-top-10/
NOT ONE EXPANSION on this list cost more than $39.99 to pre-order, and at least 1/2 of them were less than $30! Also, every single game on that list included at least some in-game extras with it’s cheapest, standard pre-order pack. EVERY. ONE.
So at best, you might get away with saying that the “average” price of an MMO Expansion is $40 in pre-order, but not $50. And that “average” includes at least some in-game extras in EVERY INSTANCE, beyond mere “Beta Access”.
Even Mists of Panderia came out at only $39.99, and that included in-game extras ACROSS 3 DIFFERENT GAMES!
I would need to see a lot more examples than just “Warlords of Draenor costs that much” before I could say “$50 is the price of an expansion pre-order, with virtually no extras included.”

you guys do know that you dont have to buy the expansion right now.
no one is twisting your arm.prepurchase is for people who are too hyped to wait for release.
are you too hyped to wait for release?
no?
then dont prepurchase.
Ah, you missed the section of the Pre-order page where it says “Access to All Beta Weekend Events”. It’s at the top of the page. I can feel my arm being twisted just typing those words out…

…
That being said, I am going to stand firm against people who are complaining about the price, attempting to compare it to other games (including GW1) or demanding freebies when clearly all the content between Core and now has been cheap at the very most in cost, given the average player in GW2 might have spent something like $5 (I read this from an article somewhere, it was a comparison between MMOs). I still feel a bit down about the individuals without a case demanding some sort of entitlement for playing the game, and there have been quite a few of those that I have read.
…You can’t support your points with evidence that you can’t cite. As far as I can tell you made that number up and used it to justify your perception. Anyway, technically your overarching point is correct. Time will fix all of those problems. Entropy is a hell of a drug. Regardless, if you’re going to denigrate people and try to use supporting evidence, at least make sure it exists before you post it.
Unfortunately, everyone is getting screwed on this, bar none. Every single person is now stuck behind some kind of paywall. New players will have to pay for old living story. Old players will have to pay for character slots. The hidden fees system of income generation that has been established is a bummer and will only make people trust Anet less. That, more than anything, is a terrible business move.
Found it, though I thought I read a different article than this one that was more recent but I don’t think the numbers would inflate or deflate by a terribly high amount (March 2014 from March 2013):
https://www.superdataresearch.com/blog/mmo-arpu/
It wasn’t $5 as I thought but $3.88 average per user.
What you linked there, as far as I can tell, is an article saying that GW2 is the 3rd most profitable B2P/F2P MMO on the planet (per user), making 3 times as much money per account as League of Legends! Was that part of your argument about how we should just pay the $50 and get on with it already?

“Don’t Pre-Purchase Heart of Thorns” has hit 2500 on reddit and this thread alone is 60 pages in under 24 hours. And yet, (unsurprisingly) total silence. This is how I imagine Anet HQ right now.
Imagine what it will be like on Friday, when they have to host a Live Twitch Stream, talking about how great the expansion is going to be…

You do not get 2 seperate codes, you can ONLY get the free base game if you DO NOT apply your expac purchase to an existing account. The second you upgrade your current account to an HoT account, the “free bonus” game vanishes forever.
Will it even be possible for them to talk about anything other than the price of this expansion? It seems almost guaranteed that that will be the only subject in their Chat this week. I do not envy the people who will be hosting on Friday; try to take it easy on them, guys.

Are the codes separate when you pre-purchase?
Do you get a code for GW2 and another one for HoT?
Or is it only one code that combines both?
Because a third account would be useful.
You do not get 2 codes, the free account vanishes forever the moment you apply your expac purchase to an existing account.

I just want to take a moment to point out that we’re about to hit 60 pages in less than 24-hours since the price of Heart of Thorns became available…
WE DID EVERYONE!!!
Man, I would NOT want to be the person hosting POI Live on Twitch this Friday…
all I do is PvP.
Ah, thank you for clearing that up. Enjoy your free PvP map, which you DO NOT have to pay for, according to the interview in TenTonHammer back in February. I suppose $50 doesn’t sound like much at all when you’re getting the only piece of the expansion that you care about for free.
Are there any other things that you’ll never have to buy that you think are a great deal? I’d love to hear about them (^_^)
Don’t forget your blessing buffs and running through a zerg with whirling axe / hundred blades / whirling wrath healing for 20,000 with no cool down omnomberry pie. Make sure to have a full stack of golems in a box to throw off walls too. Way better than rapid fire pew pewers!
Is this satire? I think it’s satire. It’s hard to tell, because nobody’s going to heal for 20k from an omnomberry pie, and it’s on a one second cooldown. Beh.
Yeah, he’s actually describing what might have been a real situation back in 2012. Oh, and don’t forget to bring a Thief along to hold Towers/Keeps/Camp circles while permanently maintaining Stealth!
Ok, I don’t have a full grasp of the tiers yet. It seems simple, but do all T1 play ONLY other T1 servers? Like I said, I think Isle of Janthir is like T7? but I also read that of the 3 servers in that tier, 2 of the 3 are getting wrecked by one server and the 2 that are losing refuse to group up. The main thing I am looking for is just active players that play WvW. Guilds that actually have players who want to group up and take down other players or keeps or w/e. Sorry if I sound so ignorant. I only did pvp and I wanted to try something else.
Well, Tier 1 probably has the greatest parity in NA right now, but part of the reason that matches are so even-sided is that many guilds now have accounts on at least 2 of the Tier 1 servers, so if 1 server has a very low score, whole guilds can just log in on that server instead of their “Home Server”, to fight against the people they usually would fight alongside for a week. If you don’t have at least 2 accounts, it’s becoming harder and harder to recommend T1 NA atm. Things are weird here…
This is WvW we’re talking about, right? I thought if the other team had better stats, the standard strategy was to simply bring more people! Actually, my observation over the past 3 years has been that “Bring MOAR people!” is the standard strat for any problems that you might run into in WvW… so I don’t know if the 10% stat difference will really change anything.
(edited by Otokomae.9356)
I actually didn’t see any mention of GvG, of any kind. Just some “Combat Arena”, kind of like we already have in Obsidian Sanctum; is that what everyone’s talking about? We will now be able to have informal, private Death-Matches, with no scoring, no leaderboards, no spectator mode… is that what we’re calling GvG now? We can already do that in WvW, I thought… I guess with Guild Halls, we won’t have to be in the same Tier as the guilds we fight against. Is that all the GvG support we get for $50, tho? I don’t get why anyone is excited about this, tbh.
Not really.. it’s technically true of course – you can keep playing the base GW2 until the doomsday without paying extra.
Wait… you mean this isn’t Doomsday already? ‘Cause that’s the impression I’m getting from about 5 minutes on these forums lol.

Just tell me that all this money is going towards FINALLY updating the game from DirectX 9 and maybe you’ll still get my sale. Maybe. And I’ve been waiting to pre-order this since January, and had been planning to pre-order on DAY 1. Still can’t bring myself to press that “Buy” button, though. I mean… $50? Really? For an expansion to a game running on a 10+-year-old engine that still drops the most beastly PC’s down to 15 FPS whenever more than 20 players show up anywhere?
(edited by Otokomae.9356)
This is a 2012 meta; if people are doing this in large numbers again, it means they’re desperate, and your server will probably win anyway.
They would have the most fun with 1/2 repping one server the other 1/2 repping the other and fighting themselves – guild chat would be hilarious with trash talking each other…..
This actually sounds kind of awesome…
(^_^)
I haven’t really seen a Thread about this on the official forums yet, so I was just wondering… is this a big deal, or not?
For anyone unfamiliar w/ this new Meta, guilds in T1 NA are starting to use alt accounts for the whole guild, usually repping 2 servers at a time within the same Tier. So a guild might raid in WvW for 1 server on Friday & Saturday, then raid WvW for a rival server within the SAME TIER on their alt accounts for the rest of the week. There used to be only 1 major WvW guild doing this on a large scale, but it’s now spreading, so that several big WvW guilds in T1 are planning to rep at least 2 servers within the same Tier in the same week, simply using alt accounts (Thank you for the $10 alt account sale, Anet). At least 1 guild actually requires that all members have a separate account on both servers!
So I’m just wondering, does this change the balance in a Tier when a large WvW guild does this? How about several guilds in the same Tier raiding on multiple servers in the same week? Does it make the overall atmosphere less competitive? Is it awkward for people to be following a Commander one night, only to get zerged down by the same Commander and his guild the next night? Does this make PPT/weekly score even more irrelevant? Will this improve or degrade WvW servers & communities? I’m just wondering what everyone thinks of this meta, and if it is happening in other Tiers or in EU as well, and where this meta might be leading us.
Well at least they removed the random shadow step from hard to catch, guessing that’s just a coincidence.
A room full of monkeys tapping away on a keyboard for eternity will eventually write shakespeare.
That’s never been proven.
Wait… Thieves can use Swords? How long has that been going on?
I don’t get it… everybody’s saying that choosing between “Cloaked in Shadow” & “Shadow’s Rejuvenation” means that D/D is dead(er) after this goes live? I mean, D/D Thieves can now have Panic Strike, Executioner, AND Hidden Killer all at the same time! When are you going to need to blind anyone? CnD + Backstab is going to be back up to early beta levels!
Oh yeah, did I mention that, apparently, we all get the current version of “Dagger Training” (+5% Damage w/ Dagger) for free? What’s the nerf here?
Can everyone please just be quiet and hope that no one notices that we can now take both Executioner AND Hidden Killer at the same time…
sssshhhhhhhhhh……….
I really wanna see how this works out when it goes live.
(^_^)
So… according to the livestream today, Thief can now use Executioner AND Hidden Killer traits at the same time; and that’s on top of a +5% damage increase to all Dagger skills? That can’t be right…
Still, I’m having a hard time seeing what the “Thief nerf” is here.
If some players have a perfectly fine connection and some don’t, it’s almost certainly not the fault of the software. Instead I’d recommend that those people do a tracert to the server as well as analyze their net traffic when connected to see how it’s traveling back and forth to the server.
I did this last week, using Anet’s utility and PingPlotter. Anet Support was very helpful, btw, and went through several steps to try to pin down the actual problem. The result their engineers came up with was as follows:
“Looking through your Pingplotter report, honestly, it doesn’t look that bad. I don’t see any Packet Loss that isn’t explained as a server blocking diagnostic network traffic (would not affect your gameplay at all). In addition, your ping also never goes above 50. I see a little bit of jitter, but it doesn’t look like it is causing any real issues. As far as your network connection is concerned, you shouldn’t be seeing any network latency.
That leaves a variety of different causes. I do know that when you are playing WvW, if three large zergs come together, you can experience delay in your abilities (I experience this myself). This is not network latency. This delay is caused by the servers and your computer processing so much movement and ability data. This often manifests itself as ability latency. Again, this is not the network, this is computer hardware. It does not manifest itself usually as a drop in FPS.
This type of latency is something we are aware of and while there isn’t a simple fix, we are always looking at improving the GW2 experience in all aspects, including issues in WvW like this one. Unfortunately there are no steps that Arenanet Customer Support can suggest to solve this for you."
So… not my network. I do suggest that people who are curious about the source of their latency/lag contact Anet Support, and be prepared to run the Anet utility and 30 minutes of PingPlotter (the free trial version), to find out if it is your network or not.

And they never saw or heard from poor Stephen ClarkeWillson again. Some say Anet canned him for responding to WvW problems. Other say He never weas really there at all, a Remnant/ghost/echo of the old ANET that cared for wvv. We may never really know the truth, but if your quite, you can log into the WvW forums late on a Saturday night and still hear the sound of him typing. ooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooo

2-10 second Skill Lag on NA Tier 1 Eternal Battlegrounds. 4:30pm EST, 04/12
How long is it gonna take for FA to get to NA T1, anyway? Feels like it’s taking forever…
This is already my favorite thread on the forums this year. Keep working on the problem, we really appreciate it. And update those drivers!!!
I was thinking about this the other day. If you go by the stats as they’re laid out in the trait paths (Power, Precision, Toughness, Vitality, Boon Dur, Cond Dur, Ferocity, Healing) where then it would only be 10% for lvl 80 food since that would be equivalent to 100 points of any of the other stats. And similarly the Boon Duration food would be 10% as well instead of 20%.
And with you bringing up the individual condition duration foods being at 15% it seems only logical that a food that buffs ALL condition durations would be shorter, e.g. 10%.
I’d try to draw a parallel to runes, but once you get into the +/- cond duration there doesn’t seem to be any convention like there is with numerical stats or boon duration even.
The problem is one that goes back to the game’s release. Originally there were no Giver’s weapons, no Sigil of Malice, no Toxic Oils/Stones, etc; only 1 Food type (pizza) and a handful of traits and 3 Runes that could increase Condi Duration. The reason the food was set to +40% and not +10% is that the way the game was set up at release, +10% Condi Duration would have been absolutely meaningless. It used to be that all Conditions rounded their Durations DOWN to the nearest second, so +10% of a 4-second duration, for instance, was exactly the same as +0%. If you had a 2-second duration, you actaully had to reach +50% to see any benefit at all! That’s been changed recently, so that Conditions will tick off the last fraction of their duration, but it didn’t work that way at release.
As for the Foods that give +15% Chill/Poison/Bleeding/whatever, I’ve never understood why those were in the game, and I’ve never known anyone who has used them.

Turn off post processing in graphics options.
Turn down dialog volume in sounds options. You know you can’t turn the most annoying part off the arms that don’t allow flying – just to pretend to “fly” … and only SOME of us could cover our faces with our helmets, others could not.
Inequity and not even funny.
The watchwork tonic breaks the arms being stretched out …I think others might too.
Yeah, using a tonic and then exiting out of the tonic makes you revert to your normal animation. You turn into a plane again the first time you waypoint or switch maps, however.
This is an April Fools joke right? Competitive play in T1? Competitive play is WvWvW, not WvW+W. You know this isn’t JQ’s week to win right?
Oh, you guys on the T2 servers just don’t get it. You never have. Don’t worry, by this time next year you’ll be able to enjoy the April’s Fool’s theme with a nice, safe, casual Dolyak Parade once again (^_^). I know you guys must be missing that by now.

In audio:
Turn the Dialogue slider all the way down

Omg Chedder, just update your drivers already!
I’m also interested to see the “proof” of your ridiculous claims.
Regardless of the the reason, the stab changes made the lag worse I still believe it is server overload with calculations the lag problem has been drastically worsened. I’m quoting off of ts “It’s sad when Eradon Terrace is lagging”. The lag makes the game unplayable and at least until they find a better implementation the bet course of action would be to revert the change.
Got a link to support that?
Let’s not turn this into a flame war. Instead let’s all just agree the changes have made the lag unbearable and to take back the changes and go back to normal lag until there comes a time in which the changes can be made and the only thing effected is the meta.
What about the majority of player? You know, the ones who are not having any lag?
Where are those links, Chedder? Where’s your “proof”? Obviously, if the “majority” of players were experiencing lag, the first thing they would do would be to hop on these forums and make a post about it, right? I mean, it’s not like they would just log out and go do something else; everyone who plays GW2 posts on these forums, don’t they? So clearly, the fact that there aren’t at least 500k unique posts by different accounts complaining about lag on these forums (other forums DO NOT count) PROVES without a doubt that any lag you’re experiencing is on your end (drivers). So, until you can link us to at least 1/2 a million posts by different accounts complaining about lag since the stability patch, I’m just gonna have to say it didn’t happen. Links or it didn’t happen. That’s science. You can’t argue with science, Chedder.
You can turn it off mostly.
Turn off post processing in graphics options.
Turn down dialog volume in sounds options.
The problem is that we can’t turn it off for everyone else, which means that enemies can see us coming from half-way across the map, through walls, hills, and whatever else is supposed to block their view.
