the fact is that A.E.D. removes condition also. I am trying to play with to play without alchemy and it works. I am not saying that it is better than HT, it is a completely different play style , with its limits , but it have only a great plus for me , i am not obliged to take alchemy . Without Alchemy ht and medic gyro are unusable for me . The toolbet is good becouse with expert examination it sinergies quite well . I am not saying that this will be the new meta, i am saying that it is another opportunity for random playerbase. I don’t expect to see it used in ESL , but i am not a pro player and at my level ( diamond till now) it seems to me working.

Hard to answer. Notelite specs are harder to play . Power engi not Scrapper is unviable. Condition Engineer not hot is viable. It is much harder than scrapper, you have to chose which fight you can win and which fight you can not win ( warrior condi and necro are hard ) but it is not unviable . I used Chaith condition build ( rabid, balthazar, firearms, tools , alchemy with ft, toolkit ,elixir S , elixir X) and i arrived diamond quite fast. Obviously it is not good for high level pvp , but if u play for fun it is viable .

IN my opinion you are making a little mistake. you are underrating something that is real important in this patch. The reduction of A.E.D. open really a lot of space for new builds. A.E.D. is really a good skill imo becouse it is an high risk high reward skill : if you manage it correctly you can heal and clean condition togegher. With aed, tool (for gadgetteer) and 1 other gadget you can build very interesting builds . And not all gadget are kitten. Try to build a condi build with Ft, rocket boots, toolkit and sneak gyro… it works really well and it has a really good burst . To all of this add expert examination and you will see that you can have much more fun builds now. Sorry but i prefer to chose between 4 or 5 builds rather than been stacked to the same hammer , eg, bulk gyro as the last 3 seasons … and the paladin/marauder meta is still there and still viable , only a little nerfed but not to trash
I have been playing a shotgun-flamethrower build with scrapper, tools and firearms for the last 5 months, simply because the hammer bores me. It was nowhere near meta, but fun. Now it may be a little better if I lear how to use gadgets. Meh.
If you play your build taking gadgeteer , aed and rocket boots you can make really good damage and in the same time it is quite viable.
Elixir S seems counterproductive to AED as the two could interfere with each other. Unless you have an unnatural sense of prediction, S could trigger after you pop AED in extended fights and cost you dearly. AED needs that pseudo-death trigger in order to cleanse.
You do realize there is an actual skill, and not a trait, called Elixer S where you get to choose when it activates ya?
He probably referred to the trait that procs elixir S. I think that with A.E.D. now you can try to play without alchemy at all ( try , i am not saying it will be new meta but for sure it is fun )
I have been pulling at this thread for a while now and am glad to see that it has finally come to fruition. The change to AED was much needed, although I think with competent players we might see a slight increase on the cd to 35s due to the combination of gadgeteer overcharging it to a 33% uptime “you can’t attack me” button. I already developed a prototype a while back that would look something like this. This would need some minor tweaking here and there, but prove fun and challenging overall despite some of the overly dramatic nerfs to hammer.
I had a different approch but the idea is the same, take tools and a gadget for avoiding to take alchemy and invention. This is the build i tried yesterday and it seemed to me to work quite well :

AED toolbet + Expert examination + rocket kick is an awesome combo . This build has really a good condition burst (from burning ) and you can cover burning with a lot of condition to remove .

I read many people quite desperate for this patch. I think that we had a great thing in this patch : the reduction of A.E.D to 30 sec in my opinion is really a great thing . Why ? Cause i think that it opens engineer to different builds. A.E.D. removes condi every 30 secs and if you take gadgetteer and a gadget it is also shorter. I tried, for example a condition build with scrapper, tools and firearms. It was quite effective and fun . The good thing is that you can play without alchemy and inventions … for me it is really a good thing. This is the build i used for testing .
try this, it is a very common build. The real problem only is to fight necros and condi warrior but it is quite fun ( it is not mine ) . It is not strong as power hammer , ok , but it works quite well if you play smart ( don’t go 1 vs 1 when you know you can not win ) . Obviously with pistols you need toolkit and power wrench .. it is quite mandatory .

Is it time for pistol pistol engi to come back ? ( i played in all season 3 and it was not bad at all ) . Do you see a space for “AED” now ? maybe a power build with aed , throw mine and gadgeteer ? One good thing for me is that now we will not be forced to take alchemy + invention … so something like scrapper ,alchemy tools will be fun . The only real problem is that we are bound to alchemy for condition removal … we have not great alternatives without it …

It is not true. P/P engi usually is played with FT , toolkit , elixir S. With tools you have a full block every 13.5 secs… it is all except squishy with rabid amulet. The real different from scrapper is that scrapper has much more regen and projectil defense. Rifle is less effective now than pistols . There is too much stability and too much project reflection for using rifle.
Like others have said heavy condi specs mainly viper like builds that have decent power damage and high condi damage . The thing is if a scrapper knows they’re going to be fighting a condi spec they can switch utility to handle them perfectly or turn it into a fight where they have the upperhand with things such as elixir C or purge gyro, healing turret, elixir kit the actual elixirs removing condis if traited then the throw elixirs and they can trait for adaptive armor I believe it’s called which outright reduces all incoming condi damage by 20%. Scrappers truly have something for everything honestly the biggest thing when it comes to facing them is knowing what they’re actually running.
The class as a whole isn’t really something you can straight up bully off a point only 2 classes that I have exprienced and seen bully a scrapper off a point are warriors and reapers, even then the scrapper can go toe to toe with them in melee range while having better escapes and near the same level of sustain
Scrapper is really strong but even with elixir C ( i use it with medic gyro) with a condi spammer class you can win it . I am not saying that it is easy … i am saying that it is not invincible. In my opinion it is much harder to take down a scrapper with a zerk class . One of the most important thing against scrapper is good access to poison. it weakens his major strengh : the heal .
Problem is that winning against a scrapper is not fast in 1 vs1 and if the point is of the scrapper you can not decap till his dead and on the other side, if the point is yours, with many classes it is quite easy that scrapper decap it even if he dies at the end . In my opinion in spvp it is a bad idea to go 1vs 1 if you are not sure that the fight ends in small time, otherwise it is much better to go to +1 elsewhere . It is a matter of strategy , not only of class
P/P condi engi can kill scrappers … it is a fun fight … not easy but not impossible. the best remains reaper and condi warrior. Condi warrior is the best for me now

I am not saying it is simple , but you can win 1 vs 1 against a scrapper ( it is not simple and i am not saying that you will win always). I am saying that you can try to do and win. If instead you go with a p/p engi against a necro is much harder and if you go 1 vs 1 with a p/p engi against a warrior condi you can only lose ( only if he is the worst warrior of the planet he will lose ) .
The problem of p/p engi as of many other not elite specs is that against a Hot spec you can not stand on the point, you have to range him so you lose the point in any case and the fight is really hard .
Rifle instead for me it is really not viable , in any ways
I’m trying to run celestial stats with rifle in WvW roaming, but sadly rifle doesn’t give enough damage mitigation.
Problem is not celestial in my opinion. Problem is in rifle. Now there are only 2 weapons really viable : hammer and pistol pistol with a condi setup ( hammer power is stronger and simple to play but condi engi is viable too )

bleed someone have a sense in spvp ( i don’t like to do that becouse i hate when people do that to me ) . The idea is simple : if you stay 4 minute bleeding your team is in 4 for 4 minutes. Obviously you can not bleed someone on a point you have not captured, so the best thing for avoid it in spvp is to die on a contested point ( so that your opponent have to stomp you ) . The same for wvw is completely meaningless for many reason : no point to capture, numbers are much bigger so when a server is with a player bleeding it is quite meaningless. I found instead many people who wait me to heal up and regen for fight again but it is a different and more polite approch .
i think that shield need a huge cd reduction , now it is really useless. Rifle instead need a quite total redesign . with all projectils hate and stability it is really an unusefull weapon, at least for spvp and wvw . I think that for all the game modes we have there are only 2 viable weapons/setup for engineer : hammer power , pistol pistol condition. ( i am a great fun of pistols , more than hammer )
For wvw in my opinion celestial with hammer is really viable. If you take celestial armor with ascended berserker jewellery it is not bad at all. Probably marauder is better , ok , but if you ( like me ) already have and ascended armour and you don’t want to craft marauder insigna for changing it , you can easily use your celestial ascended armour. I use it and i don’t feel so weak . For core engi , in my opinion the best stat to use remain rabid now. I am using a classic ft toolkit, elixir S build with balthazar, rabid , firearms , alchemy and tools and i have to say that it is really strong. It has not the sustain of scrapper , but in my opinion , as core class is not that bad and if you learn to avoid 1vs 1 against necro and condi warrior , you can really have fun becouse it has a great condi burst. If you like condi engi you have to learn to remain ranged from some enemies ( condition spammers) but if you succede in spam bleed ( pistol autoattack) and burning you can win even hard counters ( not easily but possible ) . Only condi warrior is really quite impossible for his absurde resistance
I have hot. my problem is not the money for it. My problem is that it is wrong that i have to chose 3 trait line between 6 and i have to chose 1 mandatory for being competitive. And the same for weapon in many classes . Hot destroyed build diversity and the game is far less fun . I want core specs viable not for not paying money , but for having more options to chose among
For me it is a good idea : if someone dies 8 times for match there is something that does not work with his build or his way of play. When you play and see that your team is wiped out in every fight every time there should be something that indicate players that they die too much. People tends to give to others the reason why they lose, this should be a metric , easy and simple , which let you see you as player are doing bad . I expect from a dps or zerk to kill much more than been killed. If you always die and don’t kill anyone you have a problem ( wrong build , wrong class in that team , wrong role you are playing or an l2p issue ) .
Scrappers don’t have a second weapon. Yes, they have kits. But if being forced to have at least 1 or 2 kits becomes the norm for scrappers if they get nerfed on hammer cd’s, that would murder engineer build diversity.
I saw someone in this thread post that hammer 3 is a 1000 leap, so they can enter and exit combat at will.. That argument is silly, because the real distance gained is close to 100-200 out of combat and about 300-400 in combat. Yes, its better if you’re snared too, but its absolutely nothing compared say, an instant teleport.
My question to those who think scrapper’s are op is this: You claim that these cd’s are the offenders here. Okay. But what is it that is offending you? What about scrapper is overpowered? Furthermore, what class are you playing?
For me projectil hate is too strong, and i play condition engi p/p or scrapper . Against some classes that can not melee scrapper the projectil hate of scrapper is too strong , it makes scrapper really hard to beat.. you can only run away … ( i play it but i try also to stay on the other side of the river )
Anet has not interest in spending money of features that encourage you NOT to spend money.
If you haven’t bought HoT at this point, you are no longer their customer. You are either a former customer, or a trial user with the potential to become a customer.
They can’t simply make elite specs free in PvP only, as then there would be literally no incentive for that eSports community they keep foolishly trying to chase to pay them at all. Their entire eSports setup is a marketing tool, specifically designed to sell more copies of the game. Making it more competitive by spending less money simply undoes that entire business model.
I have hot, but why have i to play with something i have not fun ? Why have i to play with scrapper or chrono when i have more fun with old pistol pistol engi or old condi mesmer ? Core engi is not so simple to use , at least in spvp . I play it a lot since 2012 and i am playing it now becouse i find scrapper terribly boring . Scrapper is really easy and faceroll. You have great sustain , project reflection , block … mobility with eg 4 ,CC …. it is really easy. Try to play condition P/P engi not scrapper or with rifle and you see how was engi before scrapper , a completely different level of skill . Mesmer is much harder imho even if not impossible.
Chrono has been nerfed in last 2 season and in my opinion now is more difficult to play than scrapper : hammer is easier to use for make damage rather then bursting with shatter. Mesmer staff is great but it has not (alone) a great damage and quite often sword is used for sword 2 to avoid burst…. it is not simple as scrapper imho .
Chronomancer has cd longer than scrapper , u can not switch weapon when you want like you can do with scrapper and Elixir Gun ( a kit ) so it is less forgivening .
scrapper is all except complicated to play. 2 kits old engi was complicated but scrapper is really trivial to play …. one of the easiest class to learn
I have hot but i arrived to diamond using only an f2p build ( condition engineer ). Hot builds are stronger and in my opinion easier to play but if you play at casual level f2p builds can be viable too. Hot specs are really strong , but as others already stated are also terribly boring and there is really no build variety… every profession use the same buidl with near to none modification …

pistol-shield-medic gyro-bombs (yes bombs!) – bulwark gyro-elixir gun-sneak gyro/crate/mortar kit depends on my moodand shield (with its so high cooldowns) still works as bombs works too, because in pvp YOU MUST FIGHT. so little classes use 29348348 stealth – 21941721479214 leaps – 2194721 shadowstep. and escape from whatever kind of fight (see wvw classes and builds)

said this, i find ridiculos that in wvw shield is… USELESS! so high cooldown compared to the same effects (blocks and reflect) of hammer.
hammer is melee yes. hammer is front line or similar yes. but with a leap of 1000 u can get in fight or escape fights. while on other settings (pistol-rifle-shield-etc) only way of having mobility is to bring rocket boots
true that hammer reduce uses of kits, but it makes the gamemode much simple than old engineer with kits.
i would like to see lower cooldowns of shield and higher cooldowns of block-reflects of the hammer skills
I really love pistol pistols and after many different tries i found that scrapper is not the best choice for condi, i prefer f2p traits . I found for example firearms , alchemy and tools ( for p/p condi ) stronger than firearms ,alchemy scrapper . The fact is that you take toolkit , his block every 13 secs is really strong and also the magnet for interrupt some skills are great ( for example mesmer shield 4 ) . If you take tools you have also a reduction on toolbet skills and reduction on toolbet of FLamethrower is quite strong.
Another strong build i found with pistol pistol is to take firearms, alchemy ,invention .
With these traits i suggest you to point on poison with mortar . It seems weak but with pistol 2, eg 3 and mortar 2 you can spam poison really often and i found this quite strong in this season ( in the other 2 slot i usually put elixir S and something else , elixir C , elixir U (usefull for project distruction and for damage outout ) or sometime FT) .
You can have really good sustain and autodefense bomb dispenser is really a life saver in some situation becouse quite often many attack chain of your opponents begin with a CC . Bombs for be good, imho should have short fuse as a base trait …
Scrapper without hammer gives you no block so for me it is not stronger than core engi ( with pistol pistol obviously ) . I am speaking for spvp in which sneak gyro is strong but not so strong as wvw

I play other classes, and frankly every elite spec needs a lot of “toning down”, this game is more braindead and the combat more tedious than it has ever been, but more importantly I play more than conquest PvP (which I stopped bothering with some time ago), and that is the only place scrapper is strong, in the rest of the game it is between decent and subpar, and I’m more than a little bored of having classes I play in WvW, PvE or even stronghold that are already sub-par there, nerfed because of what happens in conquest and that being the only part of the game where you are forced to fight on points.
And in regard to conquest PvP specifically, yes scrapper is strong, but the game isn’t simply about 1v1 on a point, you mention tempest does less damage, yet the reality is having a tempest in a team is more important than having a scrapper.
As for mortar I am aware it has its uses, but I was discussing it in the context of a ranged weapon for which it is a joke in any situation over short range where the opponent actually moves.
In this season i was so bored that i played a lot a condi f2p pistol pistol engineer. Not strong as scrapper but i had much more fun arriving in diamond that in season 2 and season 1 with scrapper … so i agree with you on HOT specs … too easy to play and too boring
if u want a vanilla class play it . I do and it works quite well if you are smart .
I will also add that scrapper has not great range attack but don’t understimate Elixir Gun, Auto attack is really good and in spvp the fight is for a point so range fight is less important becouse if you are not on a point you don’t cap it . Mortar can be quite good too, expecially for poison 2 in some situations. I did not use it but now i begin to use it more often , for example against bunkers : mortar 2 and poison can be really strong for taking down bunkers ( with eg 3 and if u are condi pistol 2 you have quite good poison access) . Poison reducts heal even if you have very low condi damage so it can help you ( sadly i discovered this at the end of the season
)
Scrapper need a little tuned down. I play it too as main. it is really strong, you can fight quite everything, even condition spammer in 1 vs 1 if you take for example medic gyro, eg and elixir C. Everyclass should have weakness otherwise all classes should not have ones.
If you reduce project reflection on hammer 2 you can make scrapper a little more inline with other professions , if you raise their cd you make it much more weak. With paladin or marauder scrapper has a really good survivability and a really good damage.
Tempest cleric for example can make really low damage, especially if you interrupt air overloading skill ( it is long so it is not that hard to do it, i use quite often magnet for that ) . You can kill ele much faster if you have good access to poison ( the 33% heal reduction helps a lot ) . I am not complaining on it but if you play other classes you will see that a little tuned down is needed as for warriors and necro perhaps . You have to look at other classes and compare to them , you can not have a “win” button, it is unfair (obviously i am exaggerating ) .
in my opinion the only thing not good of scrapper is hammer 2 : scrapper has too strong against projectils . I should not increase cd but i’d eliminate somewhere project reflection .
dire works really well expecially with scepter shield staff. I am using a dire armour with rampage trinkets mixed to have a little more power becouse i prefer sword shield as second weaponset .
in wvw you have not spead with this …. in spvp elixir B for speed is enough
Scrapper is op and it is stronger than f2p engineer. I wanted to try something different , not scrapper, becouse i was bored from it. I arrived diamond with this “simple” build . It is a variation of classic wanderer FT build … without ft. Wanderer with ft is really strong but i have problem against necros and warriors . With this build i lose ft utilities ( and it is a loss) , i lose damage from ft toolbet skill but i gain great damage stacking might. I know that there is boon corruption but if you range you play smarty and use costantly your elixirs it is not a great problem . As utility u can chose between elixir X and mortar .
Thieves are not a great problem ( what killed hgh in the past) becouse box of nails + analyze helps you a lot. Mesmers are harder in 1 vs 1 . It is not a replace of scrapper, it is something different if someone is bored . Till diamond it works quite well . Under heavy condi pressure time your elixirs, if the fight is longer your output damage will be higher so try to survive as long as u can .

it seems to me that rank in wvw means really nothing …. but perhaps i am wrong ( the same is for spvp … ) but wvw rank means less then spvp one , in any case it means only the time you play … not your skill level. In pvp the division is something that “can” show your skill level but in wvw there is nothing similar becouse it is a unending big numbers fight

The problem with profession achievement is it encourages people to play classes they arent good with in ranked. You know how in fighting games they say if you want to be really good you should stick to one character, well there is some truth to it. It applys to anything that is heavily dependant on your reflexes like GW2 (for the most part).
For this game it is generally reccommended that you only play max of two classes, i personally can only play two before my reflexes start getting mixed up. Some play more but those alts wont be as good against people who stick to their mains, unless you are playing warrior. That is why for ranked profession achievement is bad,
People get past this by switching to their alt if the match is a guaranteed win. This just makes the achievement pointless. I think there are people who still dont know this and then just make and play with alts. This probably contributes to bad team fights even in higher divisions.
If you put achivements in unranked there is no problem
we are speaking of matches, from my side, where you are 25 to 350 …..

The real problem is that you are forced to do PVP for getting a pve element even if you are not interested in competitive SPVP.
The intention of creating The Ascension was to encourage as many people as possible to play PvP and reward people for high level play, Anything short of a legendary would not cut it
PvP and PvE are two modes of the same game not two different games. Obviously Anet will want as many people as possible to play both and the easiest way is to give rewards that can be used in both. Also the best rewards are the ones that are useful not just shiny objects.
So they had to give something that:
- did not give an advantage to PvP only players
- Something that was useful and can be used anywhere the player is to show off achievement. Since PvP doesnt use any special items it meant that what ever it was had to be useful outside PvPThe options where:
Legendary Armour – These werent created yet and they had other plans for this
Legendary Weapon – They canceled these and can already only be obtained in PvE
Legendary Backpiece/Glider – The AscensionWhy legendary grade items? because that is the only thing that would compel enough people to grind the league
500 gold would not have been a good idea. Would be terrible for the economy, would cause massive inflation.
500G was only an idea, i don’t do pve so i have any clue about the commercial system of GW2. In any case i get your point . I am not interested in pve items so i stopped at the ascended level of the ascension ( i don’t know the name) . What i don’t like is that you have to play , for getting the ascension , matches with many different professions ( 10 wins i think ) . It is not so much but if i put myself on a DH or on a necro or also a warrior or ranger i made my teams lose as hell only for having that achivement. I am not interested in them so i ignore them , but i think it is a real clue .
which build do you use ? I use marauder scrapper with medic gyro , elixir C , eg ,bulk gyro and snake gyro , hoelbrack runes , the meta or similar and usually it is hard but not impossible to figth them. I suggest you 2 things that people quite often don’t do :
remember that Elixir gun is a weapon, so use it when you are not melee, don’t camp in hammer all the time. Remember that Elixir Gun 5 + Hammer 2 remove 2 condi, toss elixir C remove 1 condi every 16 seconds . Necro usually have not great reheal possibility so you can go in stealth , reheal and come back and they will not have the health bar full again . The only real important thing, imho, as against warrior, is to get used to EG for condition cleaning in addition to elixir C. Also remember , from melee that eg 2 gives you speed ( so health ) . For me the key to beat condi burst with scrapper is the right use of elixir Gun. I have more problems with condi warriors becouse they force you to melee only fight. In any case they are possible matchup , not easy but not impossible . Eg + hammer 3 gives you frost aura, so , when i see necro with marks, i usually put under it eg 5 at start and then i lauch my self with hammer 3 and hammer 2 on it, so that i get frost aura at start and i remove fast the conditions from mark if i go on it. It is not perfect but it helps a lot imho .Egun 5 is a light field, giving light aura, not frost aura. Yes sorry i commented it from work and i write things wrong and fast. The idea in any case is that you have not to camp in hammer. I see many many time bad scrappers who die trying to chase people with hammer rather than switch to EG. Elixir C now is quite strong with medic gyro, better than ht for me ( personal taste) . Necro are strong but they are not as hard as in season 2 . Now i find a good berserker harder than a necro to beat. In any case i arrived diamond with a not hot build ( classic warander pistol pistol ft toolkit elixir S build ) , so for a not competitive player engineer is really in a good spot for me , not op ok , but you have all your card for playing
the right solution would be a “surrender” button …
I am one of those players who go afk. If i see that there is no match, if i see that my team is nuked every time in teamfights , if i see that we are not able to keep a single point , why should i have to lose time on this ? if i do /sleep or if i play it is the same thing , but with a huge difference : i can play only 2 hours a day in the evening ( I am a worker ) , so for me it is better to lose in 5 minutes than in 15 . It happened to me many time in the first part of ruby division , now i am diamond and it seems a little better ( the last part of ruby for me was really good, win and loss, win and loss but i had fun and good matches, i play for having fun , not for a virtual title ) .
After reading all the thread i arrive to a point in which i can in part agree with you. The problem here is not the matchmaking or the division system. It is all collateral. The real problem is that you are forced to do PVP for getting a pve element even if you are not interested in competitive SPVP. In my opinion this is an error of design. Probably i would put a prize like 500G for hitting legendary or something like that. Otherwise another possibility would be to let people reach the same elements ( the ascension or some other legendary backitem) in pve also . There is another factor nobody said. It is really different for going up in season if you can play during the day or only in the evenings and week end. I am a worker , i am really old and i saw that i win much more matches in some hours of the day that in others , but obviously i work so i can not play when i want . I am not a top player ( i give up in diamond becouse in any case i can not play so much time to get forward ) . I play quite only pvp for fun, so for example this time i reached diamond with a not hot build but i know that for progressing in diamond i have to play meta ( scrapper for me) , but i have not fun with it so i decide to do something else ( i am not interested in pve or in achivements so for me stopping here is not a loss )
