OK, here was my original rough analysis of the flaws in the MMR system:

If a dev wants to play, I’ll chip in cash to a charity of their choosing.Challenge 1 (Small Shiny): Prove a player with system MMR in the bottom 5% but actual skill of 75% for his matchmaking area can obtain a system MMR that reflects his skill. Assume he’s at 0 pips in Ruby.
Challenge 2 (Big Shiny): Prove a player with system MMR in the bottom 5% but actual skill of 50% for his matchmaking area can obtain a system MMR that reflects his skill. Assume he’s at 0 pips in Ruby.
Challenge 3 (Win Both Shinies and a bonus Shiny): Create a simulation (sim1) using the available information for this season, create a simulation (sim2) using purely GLICKO for matchmaking. Run both. Find that sim1 produces MMR for players with at most twice the error generated by sim2. Feel free to use any statistically valid method for calculating error
Best to assume a normal distribution of players, but I’ll probably pay out for a uniform distribution solution.
Requirements:
Math and example cases, no anecdotal evidence.
You must assume MMR is an accurate predictor of game win loss.
You must assume all players other than the player trapped in hell have accurate MMR. You must use the current S2 matchmaking sytem.
Other than that, no solutions that rely on a small percentage chance event to occur or require an inhumanly possible number of games.
No solutions that require everyone (or most or a lot or etc) above that player to rank out of that area.
No solutions relying on disconnections or team play.
No solutions requiring the player to sit out playing a portion of the season.You’re proving that this players skill will get him where he belongs.

Evan of anet admits clearly that there are some problems and that they are working on them If a company spends money on a problem , it is becouse the problem is real … otherwise none want to throws away his money … MMR hell is something real and known to ANET also ( they said it, not me )
is it not better to take mercenary amulet now with sigil of intelligence ? IP procs every 10 sec so the sigil activates it and the power damage of Mercenary is imho really good
I think that asura are not born from an egg. I have never seen an asura’s egg in all tyrya . I suppose so they are mammals . So my question. Why norn, human and other females have breast and asura can’t ? I want sexy asura with breasts . it is really an important subject that should be fixed since beta . Nades need a baseline explosion radius increase (either the one from the grenadier trait or revert the explosion radiuses to the ones from before the 23/6/2015 patch) that way you dont have to take the explosions traitline to play with nade kit.
Revert changes to nades, remove this passive bs from the game, and give us our fun noob- filter profession back.
Noob-filter profession? Do you meet alot of strong vanilla engies in wvw? (i certainly dont, the last one i can remember was from before HOT release, i guess most good engies play scrapper now)
Probably not, i have hot, i played scrapper meta a lot in spvp, i tried many variation, i find it really strong in spvp and in wvw …. but … i find it boring, and for spvp i miss the presence of aoe. So i tried many other builds. Scrapper is probably the easiest to play but you can also play without it. People simply don’t try, copy a build from metabattle and it becomes the bible. Meta builds are really strong, but they are op for a specific role , it is not sure that if you go alone , the meta is always the best thing. But people don’t try nothing different
Problem is not only scrapper but also players that don’t experiment. I am playing condi with P/P, ft, toolkit and it is quite effective. Now with power wrench toolkit can be really strong , combine it with incendiary powder and new condi amulet ( power, vitality , condition damage) , put a sigil of intelligence and you can create fun builds . In my opinion now you have 3 different kind of builds : scrapper based, rifle with nades and explosive, pistol pistol with firearm and flamethrower . Scrapper is probably the strongest and the easiest to play but , if you get used to them , the others also can be really strong. What i miss is pistol pistol with nades …. but the design of the profession now make them suboptimal ( you have to take 2 damage line )
At start i did not like them becouse i found them too big and difficult to run. Now that i know them a little better i like new Desert borders really much . I hope they will not restore those ugly alpin borders .
Problem of wvw is that it is only a big blob where only power of “numbers” make the difference. I suggest to anet to change the point system. My idea is to make
a point system that rewards more the servers that split attack on more objective in the same time . this should force zerg to divide in small numbers roaming on different objectives, we would have more group figthing on the same map and more fun ( i don’t like the 30vs30 fighting hitting 11111 all the time )

Im sorry Evan, but if this is supposed to be where the majority of players should be, then why are at least 70% of the matches totally frustrating to everybody?
And please, tell me, why did I get to ruby on one account and got stuck there, whereas on another Im now nearly through Diamond?

Matches should not be volatile when you are in your ‘correct’ division, ideally. I think that is a definite area to improve on. As to why your two accounts are different, I can’t say without digging into your account histories.
I don’t know if you have any data proving what i will say but my impression is that people have in great part a bad pvp experience and you are loosing players. is it only my impression or are there any data that show this ? Problem is not the division but the fact that we too often face bad matches ….

Scrapper is really strong but i want to play something else and i love PP . Any good P/P
build for wvw and pvp ? I tried with ft but it seems weak as damage output … the only thing that seemed to me viable is Caith viper build fun but … one hit you die… and i am not him

yes stop playing is the only solution. when they will lose money they will understand…. for anet it is a work …. and if they lose money they are obliged to change things ….
The solution is simpler. Stop playing this …. anet will lose people and money .. and they will have to change it or they will have to look for another work . The power is to the customers …. if a restaurant is not good … i don’t go to eat there more than 1 time …. and then or they change … or they fail
the only real solution for this game is stopping playing it . They don’t want to correct it but when they will lose a lot of players they will be forced to change it …

This sesaon is really a kitten . It is impossible to play becouse if you begin to lose you get always bad players . What is an alternative to this game that you can suggest me ? Is BS a little more balanced ? which class to roll on it ?

i play scrapper , but in solo , i switched to cleric ele becouse in my opinion it is one of the best class for going solo … can do everything and can fight everything. Low damage, but not so low with tempest and great survivability. in my opinion it is one of the strongest class at moment

Are you strong in following a blob and hit 111111111 ? the only way to make wvw working ( imho) would be to force a better balance of number. I don’t have fun when i go 80 vs 20 neither when i go 20 vs 80. It is something not competitive . If i play spvp i win or i lose, i have a resault for what “I” do … in wvw i can do nothing and my server wins by itself… i can play and do well and my server can lose the week . I think they should find a “shorter time” version … like edge ( the 3 hours cap time had a sense ) but avoiding the blob train . For me they should constraint the match in few hours, only a big map and find a way to force people to fight in small fights … rather then stupid 111111111 blobs
I disagree. The guild I am in oft times is ‘outmanned’ and often it is 2 up to 4 to 1. We still beat the blob. The trick is to be a very organized guild (and we are). For WvW, voice comms is so important.
One person cannot make a server. If the server doesn’t play together well, then you lose. It is that simple.
many people have not many hours to spend on wvw . So many people don’t feel his victory , his reward. When i play 1 match in spvp …in 15 minutes … i win I lose… me … when i play 15 minutes in wvw … it is all the same …. “the server” is something abstract… it is not my team….. it is something unnamed, i can not know who did what …. people need to be involved and wvw in this mechanic does not involve people. What is the real percent of players playing often wvw ? i know many pve players who do also some spvp matches …. for wvw it sesms to me that it has lost the biggest part of players . I am from SFR (EU) …. there is queue on EB becouse there is the usual blob in EB 111111 but BL are completely empty. Should i wait 80..100 on queue or less … to go in a blob and do 11111 ? no thanks …
That said mara rifle engi works really well still if you manage your positioning and use your combos correctly.
It works but it is harder to play and imho scrapper is better. Even PP viper condition build can work quite well but scrapper is the easiest engineer build to play …. and statistically something easier to play gives you more wins

perhaps i agree that scrapper need a nerf as many other hot specs. .. ok nerf it but give us an alternative. I play viper p/p but it is really hard to go on … and also with rifle it is not so simple to rank up …. how many not scrapper builds are really viable in pvp ?
scrapper need to be nerfed : i agree … and disagree in the same time. I played engi since long time, i really love p/p playstyle (old condi build with nades and toolkit ) and i prefer rifle to hammer as gameplay. But now… scrapper is so strong that you can avoid to play it. Scrapper need nerf, yes but many other Hot specs need nerf too . I would agree to a scrapped nerf, if there was a general hot elites nerf so that all core classes builds are at the same level of hots. Scrapper is strong…. but what about other hot specs ? nerf all of them and i will agree
matchmaking is really terrible . I make 10 games i think … 1 win … neither one of the 10 games close… people who run in trap guard when they are visible … people who run to mid at start and die in 2 seconds…. what’s happen ? i am not a champion but matchmaking now is really really broken …. do something …
ft, i really hate it . My favourite kits are nades and toolkit , but with this meta the kit i use more often are :
Elixir gun
Toolkit
nades
Mortar
Bomb
Medkit
Flamethrower.
You will take i am mad but i prefer to play with medkit ( which i hate rather then with ft ) , I hate that kit
i realized only since some monthes how eg is great even if i play engi since 3 years… but i have not used it soo much before

support for what ? i don’t see any support role in this game…. at least in spvp and in pve …. in wvw …. anything can works …. in wvw the only thing that has a value ( in a zerg) is the number of players …. the rest is not really important
Yeah, eg 4 is a blast finisher, it’s pretty great to combo with the finisher of your shield, to you know, get a bigger combo
I often combo together big ol bomb, orbital strikex2, magnetic shield and acid bomb when stacking might or stealth.
Problem is that shield is too weak . Pistol off hand is much better imho , for the cd . I tried to use it in pvp or wvw but with pp and toolkit i kill much more easily. Shield has 2 good defensive skill with really long cd and very bad damage , so after you use them it is quite easy to kill you . shield is good only against stupid ( but really stupid ) pew pew rangers or similar… otherwise i find it not usefull. A Blast more every 25 secs … for me… is not that strong …. toolkit with prybar every 10 secs, gear shield every 13 secs and pool also is much much stronger imho. You can like it but it is suboptimal to other options now
Imo, shield is a party weapon, the blast finisher is lovely for any combo, you get a trait to share dmg resistance with buddies and sometimes you can save a situation with the knockback or a reflection.
It sucks if you try to play only for outgoing damage, but rocks if you’re playing party support.

Great support with a so long cd …. and in this game support is not that important … there is no “healer” role by desing and classes tend to cure herselves
You can give much more support with eg or mortar… if you like that kind of play … eg has a bast finisher every 12 seconds with hgh if i remember right …
I have a power build with P/S and a healing/support build with P/S. Power Build is basically using FT/EG though but the shield comes in handy for utility and also good vs some niche things (shield 5 block can stun thieves through their pistol whip and mesmers through their Blurred Frenzy) And if played right you can strip 3 stab with shield 5 too.
For my healing/support build its good for the extra blast or the interrupt when an enemy at distance is finishing an ally or something. Plus the blast is good for blasting waters or other fields using Soothing Detonation, and providing general protection from ranged and melee.
Only thing shield needs is a CD reduction just like guards and wars had. I’d say 20 seconds for Shield 4 and 25 for shield 5.
Are you sure that 20 and 25 secs for shield are good as hammer or are comparable with 13 secs of gear shield with toolkit and power wrench ? in my opinion if you put them to 20 and 25 secs you have to give something better otherwise gear shield and hammer remain much better options
In my opinion there is no room now for shield becouse there are 2 much better option. The first is to take whatever weapon you like (pistol pistol…. rifle) and take toolkit, tools and power wrench , now you have something that is far better than shield …. the second is obviously to take hammer …. the cd on shield is too huge and shield 5 in my opinion is not that great, the cd compared to the effect make it worse than many other solutions
its not that i disbelieve. im saying those pvp builds will also translate into good roaming builds because they are the better choice for staying alive and fighting.
wvw will lag behind pvp because there is an expense associated with your build that pvp doesnt have.
In my opinion wvw builds have a great difference from pvp builds. In pvp you can play without speed and take them from traits in fight (firearms/hammer) or from sigils elixir or also don’t take it at all . In wvw at least 25% speed is quite a must and 33% is better.
So for engineesr it means that one of this : tools, invention or rune of speed/traveler is a must and it limits a lot builds diversity . You can take it from medkit … but … in fight medkit is so bleah …. I tryed to play viper with nades and toolkit taking explosive, firearms and alchemy as i do for pvp but it is not so effective for no speed access. I have to take invention but it is really bad choice without alchemy

My suggestion would be not to nerf the scrapper AGAIN, i would slightly buff rifle and pistols.
RIFLE:
- AA: is in a good spot right now
- Net shot: this clunky net rarely hits its target at longer distance. I would replace this by a “knee shot” with the same effect, just remove this uncertain net.
- Blunderbuss: is ok now.
- Overcharged shot: is ok now.
- Jump shot: I often get interrupted at the jump animation, maybe there should be an evading like the hammer’s rocket charge.
PISTOLS:
- Fragmentation shot: make is as “explosion” that it could benefit from explosive traits.
- Poison dart volley: all shots should hit its target.
- Static shot: fix this bug with chemical rounds and it is ok.
- Blow torch: just a slightly bigger hitbox would be great.
- Glue shot: is ok.
For pistols you first suggestion is wrong becouse it would be unusefull in many cases . With pistols you play condition builds so you chose not to take explosive but firearms ( for IP ) Firearms is a must for a pistol pistol build , not explosive. Perhaps i’d put pistol 1 piercing… it would be enough imho .
Now, imho , for pistols , the stronger direction is to take firearms , alchemy and tools ( for power wrench ) , explosive would be usefull only with pistols and nades but you should sacrify your survivability now .
and pvp approximates small scale wvw
Hahaha not even close. You dont have to stand on a tiny 3m wide capping circle and hold it, you have an entire map to manouver on. Effective roaming builds and effective sPvP builds can be made very different.

Wvw builds can be different for 2 reason … 1 you don’t have to stand on a point …2 you have food and really different and unbalanced stats . Scrapper is strong , but now, not scrapper build can be really really strong too. New Mercenary amulet in pvp put condi engi again on the table . It is a different kind of playing but it is really strong ( it is hold style engi ) . The same for rifle : with new power wrench rifle based power meta, like the old marauder meta, can be really strong becouse they had a boost in survivability and in damage. Try them if you don’t belive. Scrapper has only the great advantage to be easier to be played … only that .
I agree with OP, the hammer kind of destroyed engis identity. I play engi since day 1 and always loved the play style with kit swapping, rifle CC´s to set up bursts, nades and big explosions.
And while hammer is fun as well, it feels like were forced into running hammer. Hammer adds so much that it became mandatory. Theres simply no need for offensive kits anymore, just pick the best tools(CC, boons) to improve your “hammerisation” plus elixiers for condi remove and youre fine.
Before HoT, we built around offensive kits, now we build around hammer.
I don’t agree with u. Hammer is strong , ok , but now, with power wrench , it is quite easy to create good builds without scrapper/hammer, using power rifle or condi pistol pistol. Obviuosly hammer is easier to play. But rifle build or condi build now can be really strong ( a great part for condi build is new mercenary amulet )
i play classic pistol pistol condi engineer with mercenary amulet and it is really fun and strong .
the fact that kits are required to make nearly every build… viable, I guess thats the word I use, is the only thing that keeps engi from being my main. Its not that I dont like kits, I hate that I NEED to use them when engi has so many other things I love
Perhaps it is not the right profession for you. Kits are something like attunements for elementalist… one of the core mechanics and they give engineer the ability to play without weapon swapping. If you don’t like them , imho, it is not the right class for you. It is like as elementalist, hating attunement swapping…
kits are the core mechanic of engineer since 3 years. If you don’t like them perhaps you have to play other classes
Nades are the stronger kit as dps …in general , for me , nades, toolkit and eg are the best things Engineer has

For me, with new amulets , at least in pvp , engi is really in a good spot . it is quite balanced and it has many viable builds, not only scrapper’s one so it is really ok now. It is much better now than before the 26th of January
I don’t want them . New maps are aesthetically much better and they could give really interesting meccanics. The real problem is the law wvw population . I think that when they will reorganize servers, new map well be really fun . The problem is that we have too many servers now , not the maps .
if i remember correctly mercenary runes have no precision. So you have really low incendiary powder access. Is not better to take something else ? IP is really important in a condi build .

use rune of aristocracy not present in the tool ( so i set others ) . It is a little difficult to play but you can burst and have fun. Obvioulsy it will not be next meta … but it is strong .
Saying that, he did seem to enjoy his new P/P Explosives/Firearms/Alchemy build so I could be overstating the importance of Inventions if you are able to stay far enough from Necro’s.
Everyone is used to the crutch of Inventions + Scrapper. It will take some adjustment, but engineers survived just fine for years without both trees, and when a lot of professions had much stronger spike damage.
I really want Explosives/Firearms + Alchemy + Tools to be a thing again. I enjoyed playing as a Scrapper, but I don’t think that should be our only option. And if F2P accounts can be competitive, it’ll be healthier for the game overall.
And RE: necros, I think everyone knows they’re ridiculously overtuned right now. I’d be blown away if they’re left as-is for the second season. And if they are, I won’t be playing.
