Why Raid Asc. vendor not requite crafting?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Pifil.5193

How many you get a week is not in question, it’s why you don’t need crafting for this vendor but you do for the others. The pvp system used to have a limit to the number of ascended shards you could get in a season but they removed that limit when they added the crafting requirements; if they added a crafting requirement for the raid vendors too they could remove the weekly cap for magnetite shards too.

Remove the weekly cap for shards while at the same reduce how many you need to get items? That won’t end well

Who said anything about reducing how many you need to get items? After all, you still need as many ascended shards of glory as before and you now need gold and crafting tokens on top, sure you don’t need shards of glory but those were cheap anyway. Either way, I think the crafting requirement would “balance out” any changes.

They won’t do anything like this, of course, raiding is the golden child right now but if you have the magnetite shards it’s now so much cheaper to buy using them than any other method.

WildStar, which did what you ask here, is => over there, happily failing into oblivion because it turns out that y’all ask for this harder stuff, but you don’t like it when you get it.

WildStar’s open world / solo content was balanced for the casual players, like most MMOs. The funny thing about it is that the endgame was entirely devoted to dungeons and larger raids, like how MMOs were 10+ years ago, then quickly found out the obvious, revealing that more than 60% played solo.

Yeah, 40 man raids, which some people (the devs especially) thought would be a great return to the old WoW glory days, forgetting that Blizzard stepped away from 40 man raids for a reason: very few people could organise enough people to do them.

It would be really helpful feature.

How many times you farm for some materials you need for crafting? Asking yourself how many more i need? Do i have enough? Should i slow down with farming? This tooltip would solve such issues.

It’d be nice to have a tooltip for this, yes, but because it’s not I use gw2efficiency like ‘Just a flesh wound’ suggests.

Again, going back to the letter in Caudecus’s Manor, it seems that all of the Personal Story options happened at the same time, but if it wasn’t you doing it, it was another hero of Tyria. Tybalt would have still rescued Demmi and taken her into the Whispers operation, and then he died, probably around the same time our other mentor died on Claw Island.

Would it fit if say all three mentors went on Claw Island and they all sacrificed their lives for one of the mentor’s progeny, Trahearne, and Mira?

I’m going to venture no, only your order’s mentor died at Claw Island, but the other two died when Zhaitan’s forces attacked all three orders at the same time.

I’m not sure, I think the game is going to treat them as if they all died at claw island. There were a lot of NPC’s there, so that makes sense, there could have easily been other order squads there at the same time.

Why would the other mentors be at Claw Island though? You and your mentor were there (of course) and so was Treaherne and the Lionguard were there to defend them but I don’t remember the other orders being at Claw Island.

Of course, they could have ended up there as the natural result of their own orders investigations. You were there with Tybalt, Sieran with some Priory Novice, Forgal and some Vigil initiate.

It would have been good to have some dialog between them interrupted by the Risen attack. I have a mental image of the three mentors standing shoulder to shoulder with their backs to the gate holding back the risen. They could have used them as the first glimpse of the pact that would form.

ascended aqua breather

I (still) really wish they wouldn’t add any more recipes for converting stats and just eliminate the breather as a piece of armor. We still don’t need it to breathe underwater.

For now, I just stick with an exotic with non-matching stats. That works perfectly fine everywhere I play (including fractals and WvW) and I can recover the rune, too. It’s still a waste, just a 100g cheaper one.

You can get them for free from Bitterfrost Frontier.

There is no point in wanting them removed now and I think most people would vote to keep them meerly because many have them already.

They are not free — it costs both time and resources; some of us have other uses for those. Which is partly why I doubt if most people have them (along with the fact that they aren’t needed for fractals, raids, or PvE, and easily avoided for WvW).

It’s not at all too late to update the system, especially if, in doing so, ANet allowed folks who do own ascended breathers to convert to headgear, with whatever stats they liked.

I don’t really see how getting a bunch of helmets really makes up for losing the aquatic breather.

The proposal is that the aqua breather just becomes a skin, a bit like the glider skin, so the game would use the stats and runes from your helmet instead of the aqua breather underwater.

So you’re not really losing the breather, you still use the skin underwater it’s just not considered a piece of equipment, you’re using your on-land helmet underwater. Which makes it cheaper for everyone to create full armour sets (you now only have to get 6 pieces of armour and 6 runes, not 7).

Getting some “free” ascended helmets on top sounds good to me.

Why exactly is lilies dropping to be equivalent to the other HoT crafting materials bad, again?

I don’t know, in my bank I have hundreds of the other materials and their prices range from about 20 to 40 s each, I have 4 lilies and 5 freshwater pearls (and I’m a “deposit all” player; when my bags are full I salvage everything, deposit all and carry on).

It’s often said that low drop rates are better for farmers and new players (unless those new players want to get this kind of equipment themselves, of course) but I wonder what’s really better from the point of view of farmers and newer players trying to make some gold: getting a fairly steady influx of things worth 20 to 40s or a once-in-a-blue-moon Maguuma Lily?

It’d be easy enough to limit it to only 1 of the heros choice chests (say TD), which would further limit how many enter the market. And at that rate, you would need 18 days of doing that specific meta to get enough to make an entire set. A lot of people wouldn’t want to wait that long and would still buy them off the TP.

Yes, and that was the suggestion that MithranArkanere originally made; “A choice of a maguuma lily in Tangled Depths.”

This would limit the influx more than increasing the drop rate would. I don’t know how many thousand, (tens of thousands? hundreds? ArenaNet only knows) of Jungle Plants are harvested every day but if the drop rate was twice what it is now (a still modest 1.76%) then all current orders could rapidly be filled, of course more people would now be willing to craft this armour once the price of the components goes down.

18 days would allow you enough time to craft your armour, a few more days if you wanted weapons too.

As it is, these kind of inordinately expensive materials (Lilies and Pearls that is) just allow some players to make some gold at the expense of other players who simply want some equipment.

It’s probably quite nice when you’re out gathering and you notice you got a Maguuma Lily “ooh, that’s worth 13g!” you say as you either deposit it in your bank or put it on the TP but expecting someone to pay 18 × 13g just for the main attribute set on a set of armour (not including any of the other crafting materials) is ridiculous in my opinion.

Edit: please note that I’m all for increasing the drop rate as well as adding them to the TD daily chest, I have no interest in maintaining the price for these materials at the current price. I don’t think it’s good for the players who want these stats and I’m all about people playing the game.

Why would players pick maguuma flowers over amalgated gemstones if the price is lower, jsut to up supply and get less money?

That’s not at all what I said (if this was directed at me).

It was just posing an additional question on your theory. It seemed to me to be a huge factor yet you dont seem to mention it.

I did in my first paragraph. I’ll add another sentence at the end to make sure it’s clear.

People would choose them up to the point that they’re equal to amalgamated gemstones. Once they went lower, they’d stop going for them. What will drive the price further down would be the large surplus of supply that’s slow moving due to so few uses. Players would get impatient and undercut each other in order to sell the items rather than have them remain on the TP.

I don’t think that’s likely, removing something from the tp to undercut someone eats your own profit (with the high listing fee). As for new postings they will undercut one another by 1 copper at a time and then supply and demand should balance out. The problem with the current situation where there is low supply and relatively high demand (at the moment there are 554 on the market with a demand of 1099 and the price is rising) is that it is easy for one person to corner the market and set the price to whatever they want it to be. I don’t know about you but I dislike that kind of market manipulation in a game.

However, having a dependable once-daily source for these kinds of items would insulate them from price fixing as well as give people an in game way of getting their own that doesn’t rely on a less than 1% drop rate.

Versus having something sit on the TP and not sell? Players will undercut by more that 1 copper in order to get a quick sale. Also think about individual players undercutting each other.

The issue is that by adding so much supply, and it being in low demand, sell orders will not move fast enough. With each meta completion for everyone per day, they add more to that surplus that will not lose as much supply as it gains. Eventually it’ll hit the point where its price equals that of amalgamated gemstones.

There will be players that are impatient who see that their sell orders have so many in front of theirs that they decide to take a hit on potential gold and list it at the current sell price in order to get something out of it. These players will compete with each other and drive the price further down.

The better option would be to just increase the drop rate.

If it was a significant drop rate increase then that’d be fine. Although if it was a significant drop rate increase then everything you think will happen if it was added to the daily chest will happen anyway.

As you said – there was mention of it.
If a friend texts you some info do you also expect them to send a whatsapp, facebook msg, email, handwritten letter, leave a msg on your answering machine and mailbox and come by in person to make sure you got the msg?

With the exception of Facebook all of those examples are direct forms of communication; if your friend texted you then he directly contacted you with the message, presumably because he wanted you to actually get the message.

Your friend wouldn’t post the message using a form of communication that he knows you don’t use and expect that you’d somehow get it.

ArenaNet have in the past, created posts on their website, created forum posts, sent in game mails, tweets, regular old emails and reddit posts. They can do all these things they simply chose not to.

Maps in GW2 encompasses these features and don’t lock some of your characters out of doing the tasks because they chose a different path.

Yet another “good in concept, poor in execution” scavenger hunt.

What was “poor in execution” according to you?

The scavenger hunt, obviously. Oh, you want details…well…

- While most of the mote’s hints were well enough, two in particular (the “hinterlands” and “wild lands” motes) were so vague that I spent half an hour searching for the former before asking for help, and probably might have ended up doing the same for the latter if I hadn’t read a part of a thread referencing the area for it.

- The shards. Upon finding the collection tab and reading up on the hints, I quickly realize they’re spread throughout the HoT zones and dread trying to search for them blind in huge vertical zones with nearly everything wanting to kill me. After some time looking for the first one, I went “forget it” and decided to wiki that crap, because sure enough, they’re either tucked away in spots you’ll never figure out yourself, or get close to but not quite.

It seems like someone behind the making of these just assumes that since most people are probably going to just look it up anyways, they make parts of it so vague/tedious/frustrating that people end up looking it up anyways…

The sad thing is, the story parts were nice. I just wish that annoying scavenger hunt wasn’t in the way of getting to them…but at least I never have to do it again.

Thanks for sharing, I was genuinely asking out of pure curiosity. Anyway I will have to disagree with you personally. What you found frustrating to look for felt amazing to me. I personally had no trouble to find the items (except for 2 items but anyway people talked about it on map), had no trouble going into the maps and remembering what the description of the item referred to. Over all I found it excellent because it made me go back into places I had forgotten about.

I agree with FLog. The riddles were one of the best bits. I had huge fun trying to work them out. A couple had me stumped for a bit and one I needed a Guildie to solve (who knew it without a second thought), but otherwise it was a brilliant scavenger hunt from my p.o.v.

I thought it was a great scavenger hunt too, I fully accept what Nilkemia is saying though; it’s very much lore/memory driven. The only one I had real problems with was Gendarran Fields because the clue said something about “these bountiful fields” so I was looking in the fields near Lake Bounty. Oh, and in Harathi I went into what I thought was the right place but was actually too far south in another cave and had to kill a bunch of unfortunate skritt to get back out.

Apart from the unintended skritticide it was great!

Adding it to the chest would add at most 1 per day as you would only be able to get one for the Chak Gerent, it would encourage partipation in these metas and will pretty much be required once the next expac drops, I think.

It’ll still drive the price down to less than a gold if not further. There only sink for it is the armor/weapon and the new current event. With players having the option to get it on a wide scale, even if 1 per day, you’d eventually create a large surplus and drive it down. Currently this provides a great opportunity for farmers or players just casually playing on those maps.

Why are hard-core farmers or casual players (or indeed anyone else) more deserving than the person who just wants to craft a suit of armour? I mean, simply having a desire to craft a specific armour set says nothing about your bank balance.

For a game’s economy to be healthy, players cannot be able to farm everything they need easily. By distributing supply randomly through the entire playerbase, you force them to participate in the Trading Post which keeps the game’s economy running smoothly which provides two main benefits:

1. Fights inflation by destroying gold and
2. Makes the game rewarding by allowing players who get these items to sell them to players who want these items.

Being able to easily acquire the 18 lilies you want may make the game more rewarding for you (1 person), but it makes the game less rewarding for 17 other people who now just have more junk items in their bank.

This is not actually true though, the economy in not any more “healthy” because some items cost 10 g and others cost 1g. It just means that some people’s armour sets cost 170 or so more gold than others.

Well, looks like the recent update has brought back this issue and made it worse all of a sudden.

Hey, remember Hero’s Choice chests?

Dragon’s Stand got black diamonds as one of its choices. Why not putting in the hero’s choice chests of the metas a choice for one of the materials used in the inscriptions and insignia recipes that can be purchased on that map?

A choice of a freshwater pearl in Verdant Brink.

A choice of a maguuma lily in Tangled Depths.

The choice for a black diamond moved to Auric Basin.

A choice of a charged thorn, a charged fossil or a flax blossom in Dragon’s Stand.

There’s only so much time one can spend in HoT maps gathering jungle plants unsuccessfully before becoming unable to sleep and spending the rest of one’s life writing on walls “All gathering an no play makes one go insane” with one’s own blood.

This is a great idea! Adding the rare mats to the Hero’s Choice Chests that is, not going mad and writing on the walls in blood.

If it’s anything more than updating a database entry or two per item then there’s something seriously wrong with GW2’s architecture.

At a minimum they’d have to update flags on the items that will be added to mat storage, as well as update the mat storage code itself to hold more items. This would be an absolute minimum in any well designed database, individual flags on items to tell the engine what to do with them, as well as the code for the storage itself to allow it to hold more objects. Even something as simple as adding more squares to the UI is going further than updating a database entry or two.

I’d rather wait and have this done well and be inclusive than have it be rushed through with bugs

First database entry is the storage itself, they’ll have to create new entries there for each item ID that they want to store. This will require updates to live database tables and as such may even require manual changes to a deployment script. It’s probably an automated system though.
Second database entry is the item entry itself, this should just be setting the “depositable” flag to true. (If this is even required, the existence of a storage slot for the item ID may be enough).

The rest, the appearance and behaviour of the UI, for example, should follow on automatically from those database entries. If it doesn’t, if you have to update actual code for these kind of changes then that’s where bugs creep in.

And unfortunately the amount of silk needed was put so high because of how cheap it is currently, but if a future patch changes that and silk goes back up, this recipe will never be adjusted if recent trends continue.

Yep which is why – if they wanted to go down this road of requiring crafting – the crafting part should have been some simple thing just to “prove” you had the craft at 500 and the rest of the cost should have been pure, simple gold.

If this (or some other changes) impacts the T5 market these could easily prove more expensive than regular crafting would be. I can’t see them adjusting anything if that occurs.

We can look forward to the new “silk farm” they’ll be adding in a future fractal.

That’s not enough time or notice or a good enough attempt at actually informing people but they’ve never been good at communication so I’m not surprised.

I’m glad I noticed someone else’s post on the matter, otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to spend my shards in time.

User agreement, 2a “ArenaNet may modify, remove, or add Content in its reasonable discretion.”

The user agreement has nothing to do with whether or not they did a good job communicating the intended changes to the people who would be affected by them.

I followed the whole discussion, and felt that your comments were too much “trying to prove a point” and not enough objectivity in the data, that’s all.

Well there is no way to gather “objective data” on the subject and anyway all these “data” will only last for a few more hours.

I will make a comparison between before and after patch to see the difference. Let’s see what the changes are all about before raging.

Haha! I agree there’s no point in raging but in case the tone of my posts has been misconstrued, the only feeling on my end is tiredness. =P

As an impartial third party I saw no “rage” in your posts.

As for this part:

Seeing as how Fractals and Raids are their hardcore end-game content they should be the same and both should be moderately cheaper than crafting, IMO.

If a vendor is cheaper than crafting then what’s the point of crafting?

Well, crafting will also be required for these vendors so the vendor should be moderately cheaper than pure crafting as a reward or incentive for doing the content. At least that’s their plan for Fractals and sPvP as I understand it.

They certainly shouldn’t cost more than crafting and if they cost the same then what’s the point in offering any kind of Ascended currencies for doing Fractals and sPvP?

Unfortunately ArenaNet rarely revisit these zones so it’s unlikely they will fix this but simply increasing the drop rate chance to match petrified stumps and jade fragments would be enough. It’s a pity as this is a really fun zone.

Who is stuffing random gemstones into trees all over the world? Are they angry at me for stealing all their hidden troves?

Wealthy squirrels, of course. They probably would be angry if they could remember where they hid their gems.

All maxed out way back in the day, except scribe, scribe is about 25 I think. Hardly ever craft anything these days though, apart from material refinement.

I have no reason to level a scribe ATM (my guild has at least 3 max level scribes already) so it’d just be a waste of gold.

I totally understand why a ascended Vendor for WVW is wanted but i see literally no chance for Anet adding one for just Badges of Honor or BoH and gold – everyone and their mothers has plenty of those.
The changes they are making now make chances for an ascended vendor in wvw more realistic imo. That or they would need to use a other wvw related currency alltogether.

I didn’t suggest they would or should add one for Badges of Honor. I’m certain that they will eventually introduce another WvW currency specifically for Ascended equipment and it will be time gated like Magnetite Shards (weekly) or Ascended Shards of Glory (on a season by season basis). Badges of Honor may also be required but they will be a secondary currency.

I dont understand why people are going on and on about wvw.
Wvw doesn’t have a vendor at this point so nothing is taken from you. Instead they talked about this adding the option to add a asc vendor to other game modes in the future. That means wvw MAY actually get one due to these changes at some poiint.

Maybe im missing something obvious? If so, please explain.

The WvW players want some way of getting ascended armour in WvW too. They’ve been asking for one for ages.

It’s important to note that these changes are not actually required before an ascended vendor could be added to WvW. They added ascended vendors to fractals, raids and sPvP without making these changes – you can argue whether that that was good or bad but the fact remains that they have been added to those modes already – they just have not added one to WvW yet.

They’d be a great set of skins for Ascended weapons.

Leather Farm

And its still not ok for one of the basic crafting mats to be so much more expensive than the other 3. T6 leather is still 6 times as expensive as T6 wood, 46 times as expensive as T6 cloth, 15 times as expensive as T6 ore. Not to mention that if the price of leather was lower, the price of cloth would go up as demand would go up.

I thought something was wrong when I saw the massive difference between the t6 cloth and t6 leather price. I had enough bolts of gossamer and then some to craft a full set, but barely enough leather to craft 2 insignia’s >.<, they should do something like lowering the units of leather required.

I agree with you, but that is very unlikely to happen. An Anet person stated in the AMA on Reddit that they don’t want to change the recipes, but rather change how we acquire the base mats.

It’s a pity they didn’t have that reluctance to change the recipes before they messed everything up by changing the recipes. They need to undo the harm they’ve done here. That’s the only real cure for the ridiculous discrepancy between T6 leather and cloth.

2 gossamer scraps required per bolt, 4 bolts per insignia. 8 scraps required per insignia results in Gossamer Squares costing 62-76 copper (current market price).
3 hardened leather sections required per square 10 squares per insignia. 30 sections required per insignia results in hardened leather sections costing 26-27 silver (current market price).

You’re not going to fix that problem by slightly increasing the T6 leather drops through this kind of farm especially when most of the leather being dropped in that farm probably just ends up in peoples material storage after they click salvage-all followed by deposit-all.

They need to wake up and smell the coffee, realise the actual cause of the leather problems (the fact that you need almost 4 times as much leather as cloth per insignia). They need to fix that problem and then they can stop interfering in the basics of crafting but they need to fix what they broke first.

For science!

The cost of a full Zojja’s armor set from the different acquisition methods is as follows:

Crafting:
421 gold (plus 51 gold to get Tailor to 500)

Fractals vendor:
354 Gold
202 Integrated Fractal Matrix (about 659 Gold with current prices)
132 Fractal Research Pages

PVP vendor:
1300 Ascended Shards of Glory
800 Shards of Glory (4 Gold 80 Silver with current prices)

Raid Vendor:
1300 Magnetite Shards
47 Gold 50 Silver

Hmmm… given these figures I can see why they need to adjust this.

If they want crafting to be the guideline price then obtaining ascended equipment from both PvP and Raid is far, far too cheap, from Fractals it’s far too expensive. Seeing as how Fractals and Raids are their hardcore end-game content they should be the same and both should be moderately cheaper than crafting, IMO.

From digging around it’s obvious that they took the prices from raids changed Magnetite Shard to Ascended Shards of Glory replaced the gold cost with Shards of Glory and called it a day. Hasty stuff.
