Agreed. But in this case it was the fractal vendor that was the problem. Balancing doesn’t mean making everything equally useless.
The pvp vendor was a problem, the fractal vendor was more expensive by design and it was created as such because crafting the items shouldn’t be more expensive than getting them from a vendor (for obvious reasons).
The cost of Ascended items from crafting changes based on supply/demand, however the vendor prices were fixed. By adding an item that must be crafted, the prices of the vendor will also change to reflect any changes in supply/demand.
Yeah, I imagine that these crafted items will require a certain percentage of the materials required to craft that piece of armour/weapon. Somewhere between half and three quarters of the materials.
Why there’s a “raw gold” component too I don’t know. That just introduces a third factor and makes it likelier that the moderate savings they’re planning on sPvPer’s getting will vary a lot from season to season.
Am I the only one that needs to put on sunglasses to read the GW2 forums?
Is there any way to turn the white into black and the black into white?
You could light the way through the English Channel with this page.
Seriously though, your drying my skin out.
There are numerous browser add-ons for this kind of thing. Just search for a high-contrast addon for your browser.
How is the price of leather inviting to new players? Why would they want to keep playing the game if it costs them 60 gold just to make the insignias for a single set of exotic armor? They won’t. This price isn’t conducive to trying new builds. Its not conducive towards new players enjoying the game. It doesn’t help anyone except the people who are done crafting armor. Its nothing but a deterrent to new players.
And it will all be worse when they make the changes to buying Ascended equipment in Fractals and sPvP, to quote Grant Gertz: "the cost for a piece of gear will now include a crafted token which shows a player’s mastery of the appropriate crafting discipline, the game mode specific currency, and raw gold. " (my emphasis) from the next release buying Ascended gear “requires max level crafting”.

too funny hey it isn’t undervalued now is it?.. it has a purpose now.. before it didn’t. that makes no sense lol. Im sure you so concerned on the economy of a game.. are you hording leather or something? majority of players cannot constantly get the leather they need to make their equipment and other things. I love [sarcasm] the logic of self regulated economy when you got selfish people who game the trading post have full control over everything because the source of leather is low… self regulating economys DO NOT WORK because people are all out for themselves and don’t care for others its simple. It is so crazy how this concept of player regulated economy came to be. Im sure over years it can work but the attention span of players these days is near nothing it is a cute little idea that will cause issues continually and it has since John Smith announced it.
Player regulated economy is fine, it’s the actual regulation by Anet that’s the problem. They’re the ones screwing with drop rates, salvage rates, material refinement ratios. Of course there’s a problem. We never had a leather problem until Anet created a leather problem. If you’re a new player, you wouldn’t know this but if you’re a veteran you can point to all the things Anet did to screw this up.
Yes they over compensated in an attempt to fix another problem which was over supply due to a lack of sinks. It seemed they sat down to brainstorm a fix then and came up with a list of potential fixes and implemented ALL of them when only one or two could likely fix it. At least phase in the changes one at at time and see if that would be enough. But they only seem to understand extreme changes rather than nudges.
Was it actually a problem though? “T6 leather is too cheap”. Who was that a problem for?
Nothing should be “worthless” and at 10c it was. It was junk status. People complain about minor runes now and those are worth 16c. Economics work because of scarcity. It’s as much of a problem as to much gold in the system. Creation and consumption of items need to be in relatively close balance. Too much one way or the other is bad. Too much currency in the world is bad.
I get that, but again was it actually a problem as such? Or just something that was considered undesirable by ArenaNet. I personally never had an issue with it. To ask the question in a different way, who did their changes benefit? Apart from those who are selling T6 Leather?
Back in the day, if I needed Hardened leather for something it was cheap, never caused a problem for me. 90 or so silver per square? Now that can be a problem for anyone who wants to craft. Surely this must also have a negative effect on the other T6 mats? The intricate gossamer insignia’s cost 9-10g now.
I used to craft exotic armour for alts quite freely, no way I’m doing that now seeing that crafting amour costs a lot more than buying the in-game level 80 exotic drops from the TP. I made two medium armour alts since HoT dropped, a second ranger and a second engineer. I bought the armour for the ranger from the TP and the engineer still has the soldier armour he got from the level 80 boost (I primarily made him for PvP). I won’t be making any more exotic armour while the situation is as it is.
Regardless, I agree with your point that they overcompensated in their “correction” attempts here and I think that has been disastrous for the in game economy. I think that they need to undo some of the damage they did to crafting. This leather farm hasn’t done that and I don’t think that messing about with drops alone will be enough.

Well this change sounds both ominous and terrible. I think we can expect the price of ectos and T6 mats to go up when this change drops.
That and that a lot of people are going to have a lot of “useless” ascended currency.
No, the blooms only dropped from events over one weekend. Some of the skins do appear in the gem store every now and then though.
Everyone knows developers play Hibernia
Lurikeen master race!
Farming leather from Centaurs seems like you are getting it from their hides. Perhaps Anet means it to be from their “gear” but as Centaurs don’t have much gear it isn’t clear.
You can get Bloodstone-Warped Hide from three places: Bloodstone-Warped Saddlebags (from Champions), Harathi Strongboxes or as direct drops from the centaurs themselves. I doubt they’re skinning one another and storing the hide in their saddlebags/strongboxes.
I thought it was fairly obvious that you get it from the centaur’s armor and equipment, not the centaurs themselves.
I mean, when I get salvageable leather drops from human bandits I’m pretty sure I’m not skinning them.
I mentioned touching the ground only because occasionally you get knocked out of the sky, or forget to turn back in time to reach the lift before you glide into the ground. I was surprised it would not stay on auto fire after I set it the first time.
I also have long set my ground targeting so that when I push the key down, the green appears, and releasing it fires the skill. Holding it down allows one to position the damage burst over the Guardian, or over some annoying white mantle attacking peeps from behind. Similarly for the heal (skill 3) and it’s very wide, and produces a bloom of heals rising off the ground when it goes off.
If you hold down the 1 key it auto-casts the 1 skill. I use an MMO mouse so that’s what I tend to do.
Just tried there me and a couple of others trying against 4 or 5 level 81 super veterans, failed straight away. They are not normal vets. They need to shrink the radius.
Take a look at this.
Please direct hugs and kisses to Maria.
I don’t watch my rubies since I only go to bloodstone fen for the dailies, but the spvp and wvw rewards tracks award 50. 14 days of just doing the dailies, not counting the rewards tracks advancing from playing.
Woah, what? OK. Thanks, I didn’t realise they had that many! Time for some PvP/WvW, I think.
Seems about right, I mined every available node I could find in Bloodstone Fen this morning and ended up with 8 today. This was a good run, it’s normally less.
Petrified Stumps and Jade Fragments give a much better return on their trophies.
All classes have access to swiftness. There’s even food that gives it.
Yes, the jump is a bit of a pain without swiftness but I was able to do it.
Yeah, I did it without swiftness this morning on my thief just using gliding (I specifically made sure that I didn’t use any form of swiftness because I’d seen a few of these threads yesterday). You do not need swiftness for this.
This was because I wanted to see if I could get up to the top right centaur POI without being killed by centaur-ninja-snipers (mind you, I forgot to get a peach and just ran straight past the guy, forgot it was a daily).
If I stopped to call the police for every driver I saw going 5 mph over the speed limit, it would greatly disturb my driving. So I wouldn’t do it. Let ANET/others handle the AFKers.
QFT.
BTW any relation to Winterberry?
Yes, you do need to repeat it every time because you don’t define what you mean by ‘better’.
Unstable hides, which you get by simply killing white mantle mobs, are a far better source of leather – because they supply all the tiers.
So the rest of the map (and also Bloodstone Fen) is a better leather farm than the centaur area.
I have to say I agree completely, great work on these zones, I actually stopped running and just stood still enjoying the sight of the moonlight (leylight?) reflecting off the snow in Bitterfrost. Truly beautiful…
Of course, a troll punching me in the side of the head a second later kinda snapped me out of it.
Something is really confused me. I know a lot of things could do after level 80: Dungeons, Fractals, PVP, HoT map completions. However, those things are complicated to me right now.
My initial though is to finish the story in Maguuma. However, I am stuck into one task since I cannot find the NPC, and I am always been killed on my way to the story quest which makes me really frustrated.
Just a few pieces of advice here:
1) Running away is often the best thing you can do. If you’re outnumbered and it’s not going to go well, run. No point in dying.
2) Don’t stand still. I rarely die in this game not because I’m particularly good but because I don’t stand still. In melee the NPCs aim at where you are, so if you move around the NPCs in a circle they’ll miss a lot of the time, in ranged combat the NPCs aim where you’re going to be if you keep moving straight, so if you “jink” over and back in ranged combat most of the range attacks miss (arrows especially).
3) If you are going to fight multiple opponents then kill the ranged NPCs first. They tend to be squishier so they die quicker and they will chew you up when you’re fighting the melee characters.
Then I turned to practice dungeons. But I am not that confident on my gear since I do not spend so much time thinking which gear is better for me.
Back and forth, I feel really discouraged.
Any ideas, suggestions?
Thanks.

Is the main source for good builds (good choices of traits, gear and equipment) some of them have very good guides on how to use the build. I would use fractal builds in dungeons.
I don’t know, because the notes are terribly vague, but I would guess that it works the way Bloodstone Crystals and Petrified Stumps work too. You can mine 35 Bloodstone Crystals per account per day, when you mine the 35th node the rest just “disappear” until reset. The home nodes do not count against the limit.
Yeah, a real fix would be to undo the damage they did at the start of HoT with their ham-fisted changes to leather refinement. It was a good idea to change the insignia recipes to require some leather (but again they went overboard with how much they required). Now they want you to farm to sort out the imbalances they created.
Thankfully I’ve already got 500 in the crafting disciplines so I don’t need to worry about that.
Hopefully it comes back with Ascended armour attached to it (with some new “Ascended currency” if required). That would mirror the sPvP experience.
It’s 6:22 AM where they are.
Each of the HoT ascended mats could be traded in for the local currency, similarly to how bloodstone/petr.wood/berries become magic.
Although I agree with your entire suggestion, I really, really, really like this part of your idea, I have stacks of those clogging my bank, no use for them but at the same time i don’t want to get rid of them just in case I do need them later. It’s be nice if it was a two way system too allowing you to convert Airship Oil to Airship Parts and back (in case you need them later).
Ironically the people who are being kittens and demanding that ANet should have released a statement earlier in the day are displaying the exact behavior that pushes companies away from releasing bad news like this.
Yeah and also ironic that they’re getting slammed because they were doing their best to get it out today to not disappoint people. I feel that there was no way they can win here.
Thanks for the heads up, Mike! Hope it goes well but obviously there’s only so much you can do so I think that most people will understand if you all need to, you know, go home, eat, see your families and get some sleep. You know all that pesky human stuff.
Hmmm… would explain the use of an ice storm!
So, release will be after 8th then?
In some time zones, yes
Buy lanterns for your guild hall!
I think his guildhall would be visible from space…
Wait, did multilooters… cause the snow storm? Naw, that’s crazy or… is it crazy enough to be true?
I wonder though, how does a power outage that was fixed yesterday, affect the release now?
Maybe because it put them that many hours behind schedule if the computers were down and they couldn’t work on the new patch?
This. It all has a knockon effect. Behind schedule on testing/prepping due to power outage.
Yeah, the tests for our main product take 20 hours to run from start to finish. A few hours power cut could delay a release by a day easily, well done to ArenaNet if it only delays them a few hours.
I am fairly certain Mea was being tongue in cheek and not serious about being late to a specific schedule..
I definitely didn’t want to start a drama. :P I just got a huge bucket of Celebrations for the update and REALLY want to eat my chocolate already! LOL. XD Unfortunately, we will have to wait more. See the official announcement on Twitter. I THINK I’M GONNA EAT THE TWIX WHILE WAITING! -squee-
Can I have a Malteser?
The problem with GW2’s endgame isn’t lack of vertical progression, IMO, it’s lack of enough variety of horizontal progression, and blandness of many of the progression systems.
The mastery system is a solid foundation that needs to be built out a lot more. Additionally, there should be more skills and traits to acquire after hitting the level cap.
You could argue that they shot themselves in the foot by having 80 levels in the game to begin with, because it creates an illusion that the game is built around vertical progression when it really isn’t. If I was Anet, I’d probably crunch the number of levels down to 40 or so and expand the level ranges of existing zones, and rework drop tables, gear levels (IMO, gear shouldn’t have levels, it should only have rarity, which has a minimum level) and rewards to contain a smaller number of much more interesting items .Speaking of, the other problem is that the gearing the game does have is very trite and uninteresting. Select your stats, select your skin, farm your precursor, apply your runes. There’s nothing exciting or particularly rewarding about this. Themed equipment with unique drop locations and unique stats and affixes would be far more interesting.
Completely agree. The problem GW2 has is a lack of meaningful, interesting, horizontal progression.
The LS is a case in point, the masteries there are meaningless outside of the maps you earn them in which reduces them from actual horizontal progression to a toy. The meta achievement rewards are another issue, you do a couple of dozen achievements, some of which are a complete chore, some are interesting (which is which is a debate in itself) and you get… a helm or gloves or shoulder skin (YMMV but IMHO they must be some of the ugliest skins in the game).
I got my first precursor drop over the weekend, it was Howl, I may make a legendary one day but it won’t be Howler so I just threw it in the bank. It’ll probably stay there (it’s worth a couple hundred gold). I started a few of the Core Tyria “legendary journeys” but there’s no “story” there they’re just fairly boring checklists going through content you’ve probably done a dozen or hundred times before, they’re not compelling content and are certainly not anything you’d consider legendary, just expensive. The “journey” should have been the thing, instead the “legendary journeys” are just a thin veil for “more farming”.
I hope the next expansion brings something better than this.
The cost of crafting armour and equipment is prohibitively high and not just because of the cost of the insignias. Even before they made those changes there was little point in crafting equipment for alts because as you point out its a lot cheaper to buy equipment from the TP or from Karma merchants, you don’t tend to get enough mats to craft as you level and the leather you do get is far better put towards ascended equipment, IMO.
Levelling is so fast that personally I’d just get stuff from the karma merchants, I wouldn’t bother buying or crafting equipment at all until you reach level 80.
So I have to wait for new season :-(
Well, I have HoT storyline still to finish, then probably some living stories (last time I played was when Lion Arch was destroyed). What about WvW ? Is it the same as spvp regarding ascended gear ?
Not really. There is no currency that you can earn in WvW that allows you to buy Ascended Equipment. You can still get Ascended equipment from the chests you get when you rank up in WvW and from the WvW reward tracks but I think it’s a very low chance.
You do earn Badges of Honor in WvW that you can use when buying Ascended Amulets and Rings. They make them a little cheaper, for example, an Ascended Amulet costs either 30 Laurels in PvE or else 25 Laurels and 250 Badges of Honor in WvW.
It has to be ranked, yes. If you play ranked during the sPvP seasons (the current one ends tomorrow, the next one should start in about 2 months) then you can earn Ascended Shards of Glory (https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Ascended_Shard_of_Glory) and you can spend those to buy any piece of Ascended gear. I think that after three seasons of sPvP you can get a full set of ascended equipment, that’s a full set of armour, trinkets and 4 or so weapons.
You can get your armour and weapons from two and you can get Ascended trinkets from Laurels too, Amulets and Rings are very cheap, Accessories/Earrings are expensive unless you’re in a guild that does guild missions).
If you’re lucky you can also get ascended items from rank up chests and spvp reward tracks.
(edited by Pifil.5193)
Well they have many options. Simplest from a customer perspective would of course be say a $15 discount if you own HoT, bringing a $45 one-package-all-included game down to a more reasonable $30 “expansion” price tag. But of course from publisher perspective, thats hard cash lost. Tbh I would settle for gems, shared slots, inventory slots etc too. A char slot I only want if the expansion include a new class, otherwise that is pointless.
Any of those would be great in my opinion. I’d agree that giving another character slot without a new profession is largely pointless.
Personally, as someone who used to raid in that other MMO for quite some time the gear is nice, having your gear score go up a bit was good but for the most part the true reward was finally taking down that boss, (taking the Lich King down was one of the best gaming moments I’ve had). I prefer guild wars stat cap, you don’t need to grind you just go for the content. The game definitely needs more unique skins that you get from that content but it’s much better IMHO.
Edit: OMG why do you hate me, autocorrect?
(edited by Pifil.5193)
Yeah, those of us who have read the Destiny’s Edge books know that Queen Jenna is no fool, chances are those white mantel goons will be shooting a hill that they think is DR but the real city will be behind them. Mesmer magic, baby!
Looking forward to seeing Logan again.
Heya Merlin,
you don’t need a group for any of the HoT story missions. You can solo them all.
Did I say direct quote? His remark that this made his WvW worthwhile pretty much said as much.
Hey if you like to play like a “toxic spore” by all means it is the way the game is set. I just answered why “I” felt it was avoided.
No it didn’t say anything like that, your interpretation was incorrect, probably because you expected toxicity. Probably much the same reason you’re being so aggressive in your defence of what you say now.
I don’t PvP or WvW but I occasionally go to WvW if I need to do a quick daily. While I’m in WvW I play by their rules, it’s a competitive game mode, and I’m sure not going to give any WvW player grief because they won’t stand aside to let me do a daily.
The fact it “made his day” to know he attacked someone just doing the daily just showed the toxic attitude he had. If he had said “Oh I didn’t realize you were only doing the daily” would be one thing but he took pride in the fact he was able to be toxic.
Ever heard of sportsmanship? It was a thing before Trash Talk took over sporting events and now its taking over games. My coach always said “Act like you are not surprised you scored a Touchdown”.
He never said it “made his day” those are your words, the only reason he knew the guy was going for a daily was because “he whispered a lenghty line involving about 10 different kittens and how I ruined his daily.” That’s an actual quote.
So what did Dawdler do then? Did he report the guy? No, he kinda laughed it off, “Stuff like that makes WvW worth playing.” Another actual quote from the guy.
I wonder if Dawdler had said “I was hurt and horrified by the abusive whisper and haven’t been back to WvW since!” would you feel the same way? I bet you wouldn’t but he didn’t say that so now he’s the bad one.
But it’s a festival, they’re on a schedule and “turning it off” should be routine and certainly independent of other updates (it’s not like they are going to release ep4 today, for example). If something goes wrong then tell us “hey, lunar new year will run for another few days, we’ve had technical issues” I don’t think there’ll be many pitchforks over that. Beyond the people who act personally affronted by the fact that anything happens (or didn’t happen) and it’s time to stop tip toeing around those people.
Is it true that billionaires from <your country here> tried to ban this suggestion?
I wonder if he still has it? I mean I gather that his trip to the mists were somewhat eventful.
Besides, who should be give it to? A charr giving the Ascalonian crown to a human might be construed as a political statement or endorsement… it might be best if it was lost in the mists, I think.
I don’t understand why it switches tracks at all when you’re on a repeatable track. It’s unnecessary.
I’m sure there’s some technical reason as to why it can’t automatically restart the same track. Would be nice to be able to decide which track to go after next though, or mark some tracks as ones that you don’t want to progress on (say the dungeon tracks after getting all the dungeon skins, or the GoB track if you don’t want any more legendaries, or legacy armor track etc….) so that your extra participation at least isn’t going to a track that you have no interest in finishing.
Well, as an experienced software engineer myself I’m absolutely sure there is no technical reason why they couldn’t automatically restart the same track; it just involves a minor logic change. (At the moment when a track is finished it activates the next track. They would simply need to add a check to see if the current track is repeatable, if so then reactivate the current track rather than activating the next one. This is basically an if-else statement.)
ArenaNet may have a good reason why they like the current behaviour but I very much doubt it’s technical and I, personally, would prefer it restarted repeatable tracks rather than choosing the next one.
“Education at the University mostly worked by the age-old method of putting a lot of young people in the vicinity of a lot of books and hoping that something would pass from one to the other”
- Terry Pratchett (writing about the wizards at the Unseen University).
PvP is a bit like that, but without the books. Instead there’s a wiki with some basic information and a couple of posts by Josh and I can’t find a lot of useful, up to date information on the internet.
Basically, the game doesn’t do a lot to educate anyone about anything (note, I’m talking about mechanics, not Lore or where to find Mankrik’s wife). It’s a problem in all MMOs that I’ve played but it becomes most obvious in PvP where you encounter players that have been playing since day one, think that everyone else should instantly know everything that they’ve learned since day one and think that snarky abuse will somehow impart that information. It’s not welcoming. I quickly grow tired of the /team “ZOMG NOOB TEAM UNINSTALL !” blockandquit players. In fact the angry man in chat is a huge issue.
A few of other things that don’t help are:
- The game doesn’t respawn in waves, meaning that inexperienced players can constantly respawn and feed themselves to the other team’s players in ones and twos resulting in further frustration for all, including angry man. Should they hang back a bit? Sure but their desire is to get back into the fight and turn things around. If people respawned in a group I feel it’d result in fewer 100-500 blowouts.
- The build system is too complex for newcomers (too complex for a balanced PvP game really, IMO), 9 classes with 6 trait lines, dozens of runes and sigils, and hundreds of weapon and utility skills. The sheer number of potential combinations is huge but the vast majority of them are still useless for PvP.
- Roles and interrelationships aren’t clear. For example, thieves counter necros. How about if I’m using a terrible, non-meta build on my thief? Who do necros counter? They have two necros, does our team composition counter that? I sure as heck don’t know and can’t find any source on the web to indicate it.
- The matchmaking selection just picks 5 players and puts them up against 5 other players with no idea of compositions or roles or… anything other than a rough idea that these guys are fairly close in terms of skill rating (itself not really an indication of actual skill with a class).
- Switching characters, while possible, is slow and isn’t that obvious, how much better would it be if you could just choose your character in the PvP UI and the game loaded just that character? It would be great to be able to choose from predefined “heroes” with specific builds and defined roles? So I can pick my characters or take a look at the enemy comp and decide to select Stubb the Asuran “Melee Roamer Thief” or Logan the “Bunker Guardian And Long Distance Runner”.
- Communication tools are very poor. A chat box in the corner of the screen is a very poor tool for a dynamic game mode. The player should be watching the screen and playing the game, not the chat box. Also the text in the chat box says “push far”… wait was that typed just now? Or 30 seconds ago? I was in a fight over home so I’m not sure. Standard call outs like “help mid”, help home, help far and so on would be good. They could be in the announcer voice to cut down on voice over costs. The pings aren’t much better (again, mini map is in the other corner of the screen far away from the action).
- It’s a confusing mess of effects and requires a lot of knowledge of opposing builds. Is that guy about to heal or unleash hell? I sure as heck don’t know.
I’ll probably continue to jump into PvP here and there when a season starts but it’s not a good experience. The game needs a lot of work to become a good PvP game, IMO, and I really can’t see it happening at this stage.

Well, the actual Lunar New Year in our own boring old planet earth was on Saturday 2 days ago, so… yeah… maybe.
I hope it’s another week, I like free gold and quick dailies.
