Personally, to solve the “survivability” problem I use ascended trinkets. They’re cheap (relatively speaking), can add a lot of “meat” to your character (not as much as a full Soldier/Dire set of course) and obviously they don’t require you to swap runes or sigils about.

As for weapons and armour Artemi.1437’s post is great and is pretty much what you need to do, IMO (I don’t think I’d personally bother with the tanky stats but that’s because I don’t roam/raid).

I don’t believe that the OP is trying to declare that this is some kind of “universal truth”. I think that it’s generally understood that when people say something “should” besome way that it means that they think it would a good idea and something they want or like. I think it’s better to focus on the suggestion and not semantics.

That may very well be true in a lot of cases (in which they probably mean ‘could’), but when the OP capitalises the word ‘Should’ in their title, it’s harder to say the same here.

Good point, I didn’t notice that to be honest.

Is HoT pay to win?

New skills I keep bumping into feel extremely effective and have made certain classes harder to deal with than normal, you can only attain new skills by spending $72 (Australian) so that would essentially make it pay to win right?

No. “Pay to Win” means you have to spend the money to compete. ANet is balancing PvP for all profs/specs, not HoT vs HoT and Core vs Core. You say your current build just became less competitive in PvP — that could be because HoT specs are OP’d or it could be that you have to step up your own gameplay/builds.

I get what you’re saying, their intention may be to balance PvP for all professions but the current PvP “meta” is nearly all HoT Specs because they’re simply more powerful than the base specs.

The elite specs tend to give you one or more new abilities or class mechanics that the base class don’t have (itself giving a clear advantage over the base class), new weapons, new skills and traits that work on and customise those new features, giving you a very focused set of new mechanics, abilities and traits.

Afraid that I disagree with your, “should.”

Legendaries should have what they were described as having at the time you decided to make them. That does not include sigil swap. It might be nice to add the feature but that is different than, “should,” include.

Personally I would rather this feature not be added to legendary unless it is added to all weapons of exotic grade and higher.

Agreed – the word ‘should’ is one of the holy trinity of words that are used either too loosely or too often in these forums I think (the other two being ‘promised’ and ‘forced’).

Nothing ‘should’ be of a certain design. There are no specific universal rules in which any game is designed, other than perhaps it has to work.

I don’t believe that the OP is trying to declare that this is some kind of “universal truth”. The people who experiment with stats the most are rarely, if ever, the people who ask for this.

The people who experiment with stats the least and just want to go from meta A to meta B are usually the ones who “need” this.

I’d love to see your sources for this.

I think if it were to be done it should be exclusive to legendary items. It would give more incentive to work for legendary items, and it probably wouldn’t kill the sigil/rune market entirely the way applying to exotic would. It also makes a little more sense for legendary weapons since, as it stands now, you can swap the stats but always end up having to put a new sigil on it…which kind of limits the utility.

And before you say it, “should” indicates that this is my opinion. You are welcome to yours.

I completely agree, and I don’t have any legendaries, yet. If they made this change it might give me the incentive to do so but practically speaking, making a few ascended weapons is just as good as making a single legendary and is a whole lot cheaper. Particularly because there are a handful of “useful” stats and sigils (I personally tend to run either Berserker, Marauder, Sinister or Viper weapons with appropriate sigils).

To put this in perspective, making one of the two legendary greatswords costs between 2,000g and 2100g. An ascended greatsword costs between 60g and 75g for most of them but around 90g for Trailblazer or Minstrel.

From a “bang for your buck” standpoint multiple ascended greatswords win hands down. The only real problem with having multiple greatswords is that they take up more bag space but if you’re planning on swapping sigils on the fly then you will have to take up either bag space or lose a lot of the convenience of a legendary as you go to a bank/trading post to get your replacement sigils (at that stage you could store your spare greatswords in the bank). Not to mention the fact that you’re losing gold every time you change your sigils.

Its a balance decision to root the player when they use what are supposed to be powerful skills. It currently feels outdated in the game because HoT intoduced a lot of powercreep, and now some of the skills that root you no longer seem as powerful as they used to.

Some of the skills added in HoT use this mechanism so I would say that it isn’t any more “outdated” than any other part of the combat system.

Like you say the root is there to balance skills, rooting the caster allows for the chance that melee attacks simply miss an opponent that can get out of the way. For ranged attacks it gives the opponent a chance to close the gap with the attacker (or break line of sight). This is especially important when your opponent is another player.

The fact that you’ll be rooted while using a skill is an important part of the decision that is made when deciding to use a skill. Can I get my skill off safely? Will it be effective? Removing that would remove a lot of the nuance in the combat system.

Also, getting this leather is still completely unacceptable. I really dont understand why we are still waiting on their ‘fix’ after months, when they would just need to revert the drop and salvage nerfs from previous. It is seriously going to start hindering my guild’s hall progress.

I’d be happy if they changed the insignia recipes to need 5 cloth and 5 leather squares (down from 10) and then stopped mucking about with crafting recipes. Doing that would probably fix the problem.

I’m just glad that I fully levelled my crafting back in the day.

Surely, their inventory fills up after a short time, no? It’s not like they can AFK Winterberry farm.

I don’t know. It would not seem worth risking my account for; but, that’s just me.

Not a short time, I’d guess, running around actively playing it takes quite a while to fill my inventory from empty, if you were just sitting in one spot killing mobs as they respawn it’d take a lot longer.

I think that the reason they’re doing it specifically in Bitterfrost is for the constant drip feed of unbound magic that they can cash in for rares after a hard days AFKing. I suspect that a lot of the people doing this AFK farming are people working from home who occasionally just move their mouses while their necro minions do the work.

I am curious about the kind of returns they can expect though. I considered moving a character to one of those spots and just playing there for an hour, killing whatever an AFK farmer would kill and seeing what kind of loot you get for it, for science (note: I would be actually be playing and not AFKing) but, to be honest, the idea alone bored the hell out of me.

This, to me, seems ridiculous. The beauty of GW2, I thought, is you can play the way you like to play, EXCEPT, it seems, when it comes to earning Central Tyria Masteries. I have 2 level 80 characters, both of their experience bars are frozen out due to lack of Central Tyria Masteries.

I am forced, yes forced to either do collections, achievements and or Fractals. Regular experience does nothing. Since I don’t want to do collections, achievements or fractals what am I supposed to do? There should always be an option to grind these out if that is what I choose to do.

What’s the actual problem here? That your XP bar doesn’t go up? Or that you want the benefits of the Masteries but do not want to actually get the Mastery Points needed to advance them?

The Mastery System requires both Mastery Points and XP to advance. To complain that you are forced to get these in order to advance the Masteries makes as much sense as complaining that you are “forced” to do PvP to advance your PvP rank or “forced” to do WvW to increase your WvW level.

Until I can reset masteries and/or advance them in some other way, this account is pretty much dead. There should ALWAYS be a way to gain experience, always…

There is a way to advance them (through Achievements throughout central Tyria, through Collections or in Fractals), you have just stated that you don’t want to do that.

What benefit do you think that gaining experience will have for you? Your character’s won’t level up any further, after all.

They’re ascended because their stats are ascended (ie greater than exotic) and not because of the stat change functionality.

What are you talking about? Right from the start they said that it was their intention that everyone could earn the backpack and that people would be able to earn the current backpack after the current year ended, they just weren’t sure how so it would be done. Now they are sure. They were completely transparent but people still misunderstood or misinterpreted the information given to them and somehow it’s ArenaNet’s fault that people can’t or don’t read the actual information and instead invent their own version.

Quoted it strait from your link. The current Wings can be earned AFTER a new one is released. Can someone please point out the new backpack? no? ok.

They never said it was exclusive to Seasons 1-4. That was implied by them saying “one backpiece per year” where Ascension was logically 2016, since it worked out to 4 seasons per year. As of the end of S1, they stated very simply that if you miss out on earning it in 2016, you can still earn it through some other means in later years, IF they release a second backpiece.

People assumed that The Ascension won’t be obtainable after 2016, but ANet said they’d come up with a way to still make the backpiece earnable. Somehow. Currently, they don’t HAVE to do that as they haven’t announced a second backpiece. Even if they were to release a second backpiece, the cleanest solution would have been to not retire the achievements and allow for people to always make progress towards them (potentially earning multiple backpieces at the same time, unless they change the achievements for future backpieces).

The goal was always to ensure rewards were always ACCESSIBLE. That doesn’t cheapen the effort needed to actually get it (except for the difference in league tracks vs. divisions which was fair because they anticipated that not everyone would be able to cross into higher divisions multiple times). The ones who worked their butt off got to show off their backpiece for a lot longer.

1 backpiece per year is not an implication, it wasn’t implied at all it was stated directly by Anet. Implication… jesus…

They did say it was going to obtainable in the future yes, but AFTER a new one was released. I still don’t see a new back piece but what I do see is another decision to push away the dedicated players of the game while simultaneously discrediting Anets future promotions to it’s customers. People worked hard to make it in the time frame and stopped playing other modes, games and gave up some real life time to make sure it happened.

They laid out there plans, no one made any assumptions, we just believed Anet like the morons we are then settle for satisfied when nothing happened again.

You seem to think that they’ve lied here, they haven’t, they said it would still be obtainable after a new backpack comes out, a new backpack hasn’t come out yet. It would only be a lie of a new backpack came out and this one wasn’t available any more. I don’t know why you apparently thought that meant this would be no longer available until the new pack came out.

As for there being one backpack a year there may be a new backpack later this year, it’s only January after all.

Nice job on turning it into the participation trophy of GW2.

Not that it was much of a prestigious award to begin with.

When it was possible to grind your way to Legendary using the old Pips division system to begin with?

Yeah, it was never prestigious.

It was supposed to be prestigious by only being obtainable across the 4 seasons so only a handful of the total percentage of playerbase would receive it…

That was never the intention. The intention was, if a new backpiece came out and Year of the Ascension had to be retired, there would still be an alternate way to earn past backpieces. Regardless of the approach they took (keeping achievements for longer, providing an alternate path for gift of the competitor), The Ascension would still be accessible well beyond the first 4 seasons.

No, what people are complaining about is characters being immature or selfish.

No and if you read what I actually said you’ll see that I didn’t say anything about Braham’s behaviour or dialog being mature or not. I was talking about the story direction not the dialog. There’s a difference.

In this case one could dismissively say this is just him being “immature” but I think that it’s less about his maturity and more about his anger. He had a lot of unresolved issues around his mother and her death has robbed him of any chance to resolve them. He’s angry with the entire world, he interpreted your actions as disrespectful to his mother’s memory and sacrifice (probably largely due to that anger) and is lashing out at you and everyone around him.

You may simply see this as him being selfish or immature, I see it as characters having their own motivation and their own ideas of what should be done; they’re not just “props” or exposition devices anymore.

dh has no place in competitive play and is absolutely dominating in pub games, especially when 2-3 of them are stacked. so the dh class design fails across the board.

This is more of a failing in their matchmaking IMO; they’ve created a Rock, Paper, Scissors style game and then matchmaking puts 5 Scissors on a team versus 2 Rocks, a Paper and a pair of Scissors.

It’s like the “you should be able to carry a team full of bad players if you know what you’re doing” argument. If your team has a single bad player (or player with a bad build) and four average players versus a team of five average players then logic would dictate that the team with more average players will most likely win regardless of how you personally play. You’re effectively playing a 4v5.

Anyway, those kind of dismissive comments just amuse me.

I wish they’d allow us to use the PvP UI to specify which of our characters we want to play in sPvP and then use that character pool when creating more “balanced” match ups.

Funny but I thought that the discord in the little group where Marjory was not willing to simply be told what to do as if she was a subordinate and Braham’s anger over what he saw as the disrespect for his mother’s (and Snaff’s) legacy was the first sign of any true “mature content” in the story line.

These are not soldiers in our own little army, they’re heroes and almost by definition a hero is someone who’s willing to stand up to and do what they think is right. When that’s at odds with what our character wants then a clash is inevitable and correct. Before now the characters were all just tagging along with us on our merry japes, now they have a little character of their own and their own goals. This will allow for a much more interesting story-line, IMO.

I suspect that they will return with a preview of the new elite specs before the next expansion but then I remember that norn who go to fight Jormag and fail tend to come back as icebrood so…

Yes there are. Just because they’re not supported by the devs doesn’t mean mods don’t exist.

Just note OP, that if you use a third party program to alter your game, if your account is compromised the support team may not be able to help you.

Well, I based my statement on the fact that ArenaNet haven’t produced an addon API similar to WoWs so that people can create addons or mods that they’re sure are OK coupled with the fact that ArenaNet’s general policy is that they won’t OK any mods and that using any mod that gives you an advantage is a bannable offence and their support won’t be able to help if anything goes wrong, so using any mod that alters the game files or memory is a very dodgy proposition, IMO.

There may be mods out there but the difference between what we’d consider a mod and what ArenaNet would consider a hack (and there are definitely hacks out there) are subtle and may lead to problems for the mod user. Caveat actor.

There are no mods for GW2. ArenaNet decided to not include any modding/addon support in the game at all.

The API is the only mechanism people have to write addons and it’s limited to the persisted character and account state (things like your inventory and bank contents, character tradeskills and so on) but it does not have any current in-game information (like your health or skill cooldowns). Some people have used it to write overlays but, again, you cannot write a mod or addon for GW2.

Looking at the charts for both the rune and sigil it’s my impression that players simply did not take advantage of the low prices for both before Wintersday started. It’s not like this was an unknown quantity, the collection for the shoulder piece hadn’t changed and you could craft the gifts off season.

Did players honestly think the price was going to drop below the 25-30s each once Wintersday started, that was last year’s price.

One possible positive outcome is since fewer players are able to progress with the gifts, the drinks are now extremely cheap. It’s quite possible that overall the cost of Winter’s Presence is actually cheaper now than before Wintersday started.

If the market got flooded with new sigil and runes like last year then yeah, the price would drop; the price of drinks halved after all, why shouldn’t the price of sigils and runes? But arena net removed them as drops for one reason or another so the price rose instead.

But the market didnt get flooded last year because they already took the superior runes and sigils off the wintersday gift loot table and the pvp reward track last year. Just nobody cried about that fact because they only contributed 30g to the overall costs of WP.

Just to clarify, by last year I mean wintersday 2015 when you could still get them from the personalised gifts.

Superior rune of snowfall is 1.39g on TP.
Superior sigil of mischief is 3g on TP.

I don’t get why is this problem to buy?

You need 50 of both
