Guild Wars 2 New Player Review

Honestly, all online games are as social as you make them. If you actively seek to engage other people, you will find people to be responsive and friendly. I talk with people all the time (whether it’s just to tell them that I like how they’ve dyed their armor or to let them know there’s a champion in the area). People in this game are friendly.

You say: “In order to complete this daily, I have to play the way they want me to play.”

I hear: “I made a choice to complete this daily, so that is what I want to do. Since that is what I want to do by my own free will, I therefore have no legitimate argument to say that I am forced to do it. So, I will complain anyway.”

Honestly, it’s not even obvious that the home instance changes…at all. There is rarely a reason to go there, and most people probably don’t unless they have to. Which is really too bad. The potential could have been awesome.

I’m hoping they are planning some big changes for them.

Exploits

ProphetSword.5427

I will say the same thing that I always say when these threads pop up. There’s this thing that comes with the game called the EULA. You click on it and agree to its terms when you first run the game.

According to that EULA, you agree not to exploit. And, you agree that your account can be terminated/banned at any time without notice for violation of the rules. That is your warning. It was given when you read the EULA (you read it, right?)

You can moan about it all you want, but you agreed to those terms. It’s a done deal. Don’t exploit.

Pitfall: The alligators are definitely reminiscent of the old Atari 2600 game. All that’s missing is something to swing over them with.

Mario Bros: Flipping the turtles over definitely came from the first Mario Bros. arcade machine and Super Mario Bros. games.

Congo Bongo: Having monkeys throw coconuts at you while you jump on big blocks reminded me of the old arcade game Congo Bongo that I played in my youth.

I imagine that this game is doing much better than people realize. There is a lot of evidence that the game is not dying, but you won’t convince the doom and gloom crowd of that, since they will pounce on any tidbit of conspiracy they can conjure up to disprove it. Meanwhile, the majority of us are online playing and not paying attention to them anyway.

ProphetSword.5427

Two things.

First, your lag could be caused by a number of factors. You might ask some folks with technical experience to help you figure it out and maybe your issue will be resolved.

Second, you shouldn’t ask people what you should do and then complain at them when they tell you. In fact, instead of relying on strangers to make the decision for you, you could….oh, I don’t know…make up your mind yourself? I mean, its clear cut. Either you want to play right now or you don’t. We can’t determine what will make you happy.

Mounts [merged]

ProphetSword.5427

Its not the necessity, in fact, there are countless unnecessary aspects to this game. My point is that mounts help develop characters, they could even be earned through personal story lines.

Even ignoring how unnecessary they are, there would be a ton of issues with them and I completely understand why the developers do not wish for us to have them (I also agree with those reasons). So, as they say, if wishes were horses..then I guess you would have all the mounts you need…

Another thing you can do to create a good solid password is to think of a phrase that you can remember and then turn that phrase into a password containing letters and symbols. These are far harder to crack and are less likely to have been used before.

Example: “Jack and Jill went up the hill!”

Password translation: J&Jw^th!

I haven’t missed mounts at all on this game, and I doubt I ever will. In other MMORPGs, they serve a purpose (faster travel) that is completely unnecessary in GW2, and as a result will probably never be added to the game. You should probably come to grips with this.

Tanglerot Hills (Fields of Ruin) Quest Bug

ProphetSword.5427

Over this last week, I have attempted to do the event “Rescue the Villagers and Defeat the Harpy Kidnappers” in the area of Tanglerot Hills. Both times, there is a single villager left that you cannot interact with in any way. He never dies, he just stands there. As a result, the harpies spawn endlessly, and you can never complete the event.

It also seems to adversely affect the skill challenge in the area. Even though I had not completed it, it told me that I had already done it. Eventually, it allowed me to complete it once someone else triggered it. Not sure if it’s related to the bugged event or not.

This game needs an event journal in my opinion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

ProphetSword.5427

Couldn’t disagree more. Part of the fun in the game for me is heading into areas and finding things going on. It’s part of the exploration aspect. If I can’t remember an event in an area, that’s fine…makes it better, actually.

I would much rather roam around finding interesting things to do than to have a checklist that tells me that an event sometimes fires in location X if I talk to NPC Y. There’s enough of that in other MMOs. No thanks.

There is certainly nothing stopping someone from playing this way if that’s what they want to do. I often stop what I’m doing to take a look around and take in the scenery. I actively look for things that are hidden and pay attention to the little touches the developers put into the game.

If other people don’t want to do that, that’s okay. They will play the game the way that they want to. There’s room enough for both play styles in the world.

I’m not sure on Borliss Pass where you’re hiding or what hours you’re playing, but whenever I play there, the place is jam packed full of people. Lion’s Arch still puts me into overflow sometimes, the other cities have plenty of people roaming around in them, and there are always groups to do dynamic events. There are map chats in a lot of non-city maps, and whenever I call for help for an event, plenty of people show up.

What hours do you play?

Being in party, useless?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ProphetSword.5427

ProphetSword.5427

As someone who is in parties all the time, the benefits of being in a party don’t seem obvious, but they actually do help you. Some of the reasons are:

  • You have people watching your back so that you don’t get overwhelmed.
  • If you come across a Veteran or a Champion, you’ve got it covered.
  • Events are a lot more fun with people you know.
  • If you get downed, you have people to revive you while continuing to get things off your back.
  • You clear out content much, much quicker. You will level faster and you will fail at things less.
  • Sometimes another set of eyes will spot something hidden that you miss. That’s how I’ve often found hidden caves or other things.
  • Party chat can be hilarious.
  • If you need to pop off to town or something, a party of people you know will wait for you…or maybe even go with you.
  • People in your party will sometimes find items. If they are nice or they know you, they may ask you if you want it instead of selling it for a few silver on the trading post.
  • It’s fun.

To the people saying there is no point…well, I could argue that there’s no “point” to playing an MMO in the first place. Most people do it for the fun. It’s the same with being in a party. Do it for the fun and reap benefits you may not have realized were there.

Grief that annoys me

ProphetSword.5427

That’s just it tho, why are you going afk so often? Normal players aren’t forced to afk in dangerous locations often enough or for long enough for this to be an issue. The only situation I can think of that would require you to leave yourself logged on in dangerous locations often enough for this to be an issue is if you were afk macroing. or botting.

Lets see, reasons why I (semi)AFK …
1. kids … if you are a parent with more than a couple of kids you know how hectic it can be at times.
2. forums … I’ll check forums for topics that interest me between doing stuff in game
3. Housework, sometimes I’ll part play part housework
4. youtube … someone will post me something to look at and I’ll get side tracked
5. social media … sometimes friends who aren’t playing will want to chat
6. quickly do something while I remember
7. combinations of the above

Assuming that I bot or macro just because I AFK a lot is just plain wrong, I have a busy life at home and GW2 fills in the gaps.

Whatever the reason, if you’re doing other things with your computer, how are you not creating even more CPU overhead? You’re watching a video while being logged in, and yet you complain that the character select screen causes issues? Your story seems really fragile.

If you’re doing other things on the computer for long periods of time, you should seriously just log out and save yourself the CPU and memory the game is taking up.

Any word on the personality system?

I’m sure “some guy” is an official Arenanet representative with top-secret insider information, so clearly this information is completely and undeniably accurate.

All kidding aside, as eisberg said, they have never said anything of the sort. More likely (and this is just a guess) there were issues with how guesting worked and how stable it was going to be with everyone criss-crossing servers like crazy, and they wanted to get it working well. But, again, that’s just a guess.

Why is everyone assuming something bad, yes maybe I need more thought into it but basically something that says I’m AFK, my character state is frozen , cant be attacked and can’t do anything including heal/res/attack/etc … exclude WvW and make it PVE only.

That way if like now where I am in an outpost, and checking the forums, no harm shall come to me just because I got pre-occupied elsewhere.

Two easy fixes for you:

1) Log out or go somewhere safe (already mentioned and ignored)
2) Take off your armor. At least then it won’t cost you more than it does to teleport to the nearest waypoint to get going again. (Or, if you’re real cheap, ask someone to revive you).

Best option: #1. But, you’ll continue to ignore it, I’m sure.

Holy Trinity Contradiction

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ProphetSword.5427

ProphetSword.5427

Following up on what MaRko is saying above me, I think that the OP is overlooking an important factor. The classes are the way that they are not because they are based on the trinity, but because they are based upon classic RPG archetypes that have been around for decades.

Spellcasters, for example, have always been portrayed as weak individuals who have forgone training in the heavy armors so that they could focus on casting effectively. Heavy armor inhibits their ability to shape magic, so they don’t bother with it. Years of studying books make them weaker than the warrior types.

There’s also the middle ground, where rangers and thieves roam. They also ditch the heavy armor so that they are fast on their feet and can utilize stealth (heavy armor makes you way less stealthy). They are more hardy than the spellcasters.

Warrior types are bred for action. They train in the use of heavy armors and shields and keep their bodies in top physical condition, giving them more overall health. They hit hard and they die hard.

Now, I’m sure you know all this already. But, the point I’m trying to make is that these archetypes existed long before the Holy Trinity. But, they are not the Holy Trinity because in those old games, you did not need to have a certain party makeup to be successful.

I’m running two different tabletop campaigns at the moment that defy the Holy Trinity and the parties are successful.

In one, I have three spellcasters (a cleric, a druid and a mage). They have no “tanks” to protect them or any heavy armor, and yet, they do quite well despite only being 3rd level. In another, I have two thieves, who have no healing support, spellcasting, or tanking abilities. They also do quite well.

Guild Wars 2 is the same way. It does not have, nor does it require the Holy Trinity, but it preserves the archetypes in order to have the classic RPG feel that we are all familiar with. Success with these archetypes is up to you, but it should not require you to have a certain party makeup just to clear an area out.

- Allows me to heal people and help them out without being a “healer”
- Join groups without needing to form a party
- Allows me multiple ways to level
- Allows me to explore and find hidden things
- Has interesting puzzles, some with jumping
- Makes a lot of content optional
- Down levels me so that all content is useful
- Has no monthly fee, and yet provides new content regularly

Fantastic work. Keep it up.

I don’t play on Dragonbrand, but I used to (had to switch to Borliss Pass because all my friends were there). There’s a lot of really friendly people on that server, so I don’t think you’ll have any issues finding people.

My suggestion: Find a guild. People advertise them all the time. If necessary, travel to Lion’s Arch and announce in the map chat that you’re looking to join a guild.

It might take a while to find the right guild, but if you get in with people who will do things with you, then you’ll be set.

Whereas I’m not fully versed on how this program works, I’d imagine that it’s like a lot of other programs that simply translate your button presses into keystrokes and feed them to the computer as if you hit certain keys on your keyboard. With that in mind, the game will interpret this as keys being hit on the keyboard and probably won’t know the difference, as it’s handled on an operating system level and doesn’t interact with the game directly anyway.

Long story short, I think you’d be fine using this.

ProphetSword.5427

If this doesn’t fix the problem, there is another option. If you know anyone who has the game already, you can copy their whole GW2 directory from their computer onto a portable drive and then copy that directory back onto your computer. This will save you the download and it will work (I keep a backup of the game at all times so I don’t have to re-download when I reinstall it).

Whether or not the game will work after that is another story, but if only the download is the issue, this would bypass the problem.

If you don’t have Direct X, then you should download and install it. That’s the first thing I would do.

Then, you should go directly to the NVidia site and download the latest drivers for your graphics card. What little information I could find made me believe that you probably have the NVidia 310M graphics card, so I’m sure you can get the drivers directly from them (not guaranteed, but I would try).

Some of your issue could be that you don’t have a current driver or updated version of Direct X installed. Or, it could simply be that the card just isn’t up to the task (running WoW in high quality doesn’t compare to running GW2 in high quality).

ProphetSword.5427

Maybe it’s starting to get boring for you because you only ever get to level 10, which means you’re seeing the same low-level stuff over and over again. You need to pick a class and stick with it for a while. I mean, only getting to level 10 means you’ve seen, at most, five different zones, no non-holiday dungeons, and no real skills or traits in action.

I mean, you have only experienced maybe 2% of the game at this point.

For my money, the best combo seems to be longbow and sword/warhorn. Switching between these two sets gives you a good set of skills that allow you to alternate between ranged damage and up close combat.

Best class for a solo player?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ProphetSword.5427

ProphetSword.5427

I got my Ranger to 80 by using the Longbow and Sword/Warhorn combination. The trick with pets is to make sure that you swap them out quickly when they’re getting ready to die.

One often overlooked aspect of Rangers is that you can damage multiple opponents by getting them to attack your pet and aiming at the enemy furthest from you. Your arrows will rip through all enemies in a line, damaging all of them and if your pet is in the path of the arrow, he will be healed. When you are firing rapid arrows, you keep your pet up while taking down multiple enemies simultaneously.

You also have to be fast on your feet and dodge a lot when they come at you. Being able to keep away from your enemies and still hit them while running is a tactic that will kill a tough enemy and keep you out of harms way. I’ve taken down several champions solo with these tactics. Unlike heavily armored classes, the Ranger does a lot of damage on the move and has the best survivability when they do everything they can not to get hit in the first place.

Taking some toughness doesn’t hurt, though, and will increase the Rangers chance to keep walking when they do get hit.

Finally, the Sword/Warhorn combination is awesome, so long as you are aware of your surroundings. You have a lot of dodging abilities built into the swords skills, but if you don’t watch what you do, you will kill yourself by throwing yourself off a cliff (I probably died that way more times than from actual monsters killing me).

Fun is a subjective thing. I loved the Mad King events, but I found a lot to love during Wintersday too, so I wouldn’t say that one is more fun than the other.

I loved the Mad King’s PvP event better than the snowball fight in Wintersday. But, I think the jumping puzzle in the snowglobe is far, far better than the clock tower. The Mad King dungeon was fun, but the Wintersday dungeons/events were interesting and involved more than just killing things.

ProphetSword.5427

Guesting is one of the features of the game, but they weren’t able to include it at launch time (though I’m not sure why). If I had to guess, they probably discovered some issue with it that kept it from being where they wanted it in terms of functionality, but that’s only a guess. In return, they have allowed free server transfers, but only once every 7 days.

As far as any other specifics, there aren’t any. The questions has been asked many times, and no answers have been given. I would assume it’s because they don’t have any to give at this point.

As they have always said about things in this game, it will be released “when it’s done.” So, you’re not likely to get an ETA either.

Anything you hear contrary to this is going to be speculation and wild guessing, or an excuse to complain about how Arenanet handles things.

In a race, all you’re concerned about is winning and getting to the end of it. But, a hike is about taking in everything. You’re less concerned about the destination and more concerned with what happens during the journey.

So, remember, hike…don’t race.

I will say that there are legitimate gripes with some things in the game, and that people should be able to express their concerns with these issues.

However some of them, instead of giving constructive feedback to the game developer, shout and cry about it. Even when they receive word from the developers that they are working on the problems, they act impatient and conjure conspiracy theories about everything, when they don’t know anything at all.

And then, when the developers make good on their promises and deliver, they are ungrateful and say things like: “Well, it’s their job. I say thanks when I buy gems, which I’m not going to do until they address my issues with X and X.”

So, yeah. I don’t have a lot of respect for how this community handles the feedback in the general discussion area. I sincerely hope that they don’t scare off potential players who might be reading these posts.

While I appreciate the effort and thought that went into your post, you surely must understand that there’s no way that ArenaNet will change the core aspects of how their game works. This is how they wanted it, this is how it is.

This leaves you with two viable options:

1) Learn to deal with it.
2) Don’t play the game anymore.
