Unfortunately, while I appreciate the feedback (and I thought much the same thing), I can’t consider it official unless someone responds to tell me. And, they may never do that.
Does anyone know what the legality regarding screenshots taken from Guild Wars 2 is? Can I use them to create fan works, tributes, walkthroughs, etc?
I would really like it if someone from the company can tell me, though the opinions of others are fine too.
I want to use some of the screenshots I’ve taken, but not in any way that generates money or anything. But, I won’t use them if it is not legal to do so. I just wondered where the line is drawn.
Possibly not next year, though. I thought ANet said they wanted to do something different next year.
I love Guild Wars 2 because any race can play any profession. Something that doesn’t happen in a lot of other games.
I love GW2 because
The constant grind for gear and mats
The never ending gear treadmill
The constant loot nerfs
The bugs and contested waypoints
The dwindling player populationThese are a few things I love about GW2
You think you’re witty, but I feel the opposite of what you’re saying:
I don’t grind for anything because I choose to do something else. No one makes you grind. It’s a choice.
Also, I haven’t noticed a dwindling player population. Even on weekdays, I find plenty of people.
I used to see keys drop frequently when the game first came out. Then, nothing for a really, really long time. But, this week, I managed to get two. So, who knows…
I play primarily PvE. I was originally on Dragonbrand but recently switched to Borlis Pass due to some friends being there. Both of those servers have pretty large PvE populations. I’ve never had any issues finding people to do things with in any area, all the way up to level 80.
…it allows me to interact with people in fun ways I couldn’t in other games. Raising people who have been downed or defeated, helping them when they are going toe-to-toe with a Champion, or even swooping in to help them complete a dynamic event.
Most other MMOs draw a line between players. Only healers can heal. Only the person or party attacking that monster gets XP. Only that guy over there will get that node because he will reach it first, etc.
Why do you love Guild Wars 2?
The game is worthy of the praise. There are several ideas in Guild Wars 2 that I hope the MMO community adopt, like letting everyone get XP from a monster, or allowing us to raise people who are downed. I have met more people in this game because I am put in situations where helping someone benefits us both than I have in all other MMOs I have played over the last seven years combined.
Starting on December 14, the Wintersday Event will take place. It’s not yet known what it will consist off (apart from an asura toymaker named Tixx who has a big flying airship toy factory), but it is this month’s big content update.
Also, there are apparently two huge updates coming in January and February that are supposed to be an expansions worth of content. So, there’s that.
If you want the most from the game, this is what you should do:
Create the character you want to play and play it the way you want to play it. Make friends, join a guild, team up with people to do things. Follow your personal story, explore the landscape, look for dynamic events, run a few dungeons, try your hand at crafting, and enjoy yourself.
Also, I don’t know where some of these other people are playing, but on both Dragonbrand and Borlis Pass, the lower level areas are packed with people.
The two servers I found to be highly populated were Dragonbrand and Borlis Pass. Try one of those. I play during the same time you do, and I’ve never had any issues finding people to do things with. Dynamic events usually have enough people to complete them.
Guild Wars 2 had quite the advertising push before release. It was everywhere, if you followed MMOs or gaming at all. Believe me, it wasn’t some underground release that went unnoticed.
As far as now, they are only 3 months in. When did World of Warcraft commercials start? Years after it was out, I bet. Give the game time.
Guild Wars 2 gets a lot of press on the Internet. I’m sure that helps.
If you want to help, spread information about it by word of mouth on forums and on Facebook and whatnot. I’m sure ArenaNet will be glad that you got them a few more players.
So, if the forum posters don’t represent the minority, which part represents the majority? The hordes of folks who, during the first two months, complained loudly about how the game needed progression and endgame, or the hordes of folks who have come out in the last month against such things?
Because, it sounds to me like the game population is split 50/50 if your argument is true.
Did you post this suggestion in the “Suggestions” area of the forums? Because, if not, then you probably should. It’s not something I’ve thought about myself, but I could see where it might be handy.
As GuzziHero said, Dragonbrand rocks. I was on Dragonbrand until about a week ago when I transferred to where all my friends are (Borlis Pass…also rocks). It was hard to leave Dragonbrand; because I love the server so much, but without a guesting system, I had to do it.
If you play an Elementalist with a dagger in each hand, you will not have any AOE skills to speak of (unless you pick AOE skills for the rest of your bar).
I play one, and I love how well it does, unless I’m up against a Champion, and then it just sucks because there’s no kind of ranged attack. Being squishy and standing in front of an angry Champion is not the way to success, I can promise you that.
Aside from that one issue, it’s fun to play and you don’t have to aim anything.
Now obviously those are just figures I pulled out of thin air…
Thoughts?
How can you pull figures out of thin air and use them as a basis for a serious argument?
Okay, I’ll bite. I think 99% of the people playing Guild Wars 2 think it’s the greatest game ever, while the other 1% are on these forums. Thoughts?
There are plenty of threads about this kind of thing already. Here’s the information that you need to know:
If you see bots, report them. It is in the interest of ArenaNet not to blindly ban them all immediately so that they can take time to figure out how they are managing to bot. Doing that makes it easier for them to get rid of them later.
Understand that for each avenue that Anet blocks, these botters will find a new one. You can’t wage a war against them by banning them daily, you have to take time to figure out what they’re doing so that you can shut it down. You have to think about the long haul.
That being said, there have been about 9,000 threads on botting, all of which get closed. I’m sure this one will follow along that same path.
If you are trying to be “tanky,” then you are playing the game wrong. Tanking is not an effective winning strategy in Guild Wars 2, and it was never meant to be. Same with pure “support.”
When will people stop thinking in terms of a holy trinity?
If you’re seeing empty zones, consider changing servers. I’ve been on two different servers in my time on GW2 (which started during the three-day headstart), and I have yet to encounter a single empty zone or an event that did not have plenty of people involved to beat it.
As far as the Ascended items are concerned, do what a large majority of us do…ignore it. Having or not having those items doesn’t affect how we play the game at all. I don’t think that this will change.
A year from now, I think this game will be doing fine.
Try to relax. It’s just a game. And, at this point, it is what you make of it.
I’m sure they will revise their answer from “soon” to “when it’s done.” Does that help?
dude.
its a game about slashing baddies and getting loot in a beautiful environement.mini games wont stand a chance unless they give loot or if playing it is required for map completion.
I don’t think this is true in the slightest. It would be fantastic if GW2 had some additional things to do that are just for fun. Besides, I’m sure there are achievement points to be gained in these activities.
There’s probably no way they can program the enemies to attach to one target and keep aggro on that target without breaking the way that enemies work. There would be so many ways to exploit this, it would become an immediate game breaker.
Do what I do…if some jerk brings a train of monsters to you, follow him to the node or whatever and drop the monsters he brought to you back into his care. I’m sure he didn’t mean to leave them behind.
Here’s a good example, Imagine it was you with the commander icon and you just came from WvW or a PvE event get together. You get to Lion’s Arch to do some crafting or buying items on the trading post (You know the usual) while chatting to your guildies.
Now look at the two screenshots and imagine it’s you while doing all those things you usually would do. Would you notice the tiny blue icon on your mini-map? Or the very plain looking buff above your action bar? Especially if you happen to have other buffs/sigils/icons active. You can’t even see it at all when having trading post or crafting window open.
Then within a minute someone whispers you all kinds of hate and abuse and sarcastic comments. Is it really necessary? I hope if you read this and you hate people with icons on you will keep this in mind for next time. Sure there’s plenty of commanders who are just doing it to be annoying etc. but not all of us are set out to be a pain to others.
I’m not one of those people who whisper a bunch of hatred, I just try to ignore it, so I’m sorry that you got that reaction. But, to be fair, it has caused issues for me in the past and that’s why I would like the option to turn it off.
For example, I have had situations where the icon has blocked my ability to see a waypoint on the map clearly. And another situation where I couldn’t see a party member on the map because of someone having theirs activated.
It’s annoying to see…but that doesn’t mean that people should be mean to you about it.
Whatever happened to the idea that everyone was responsible for themselves?
No one seems to like it, at least everybody I’ve talked to seems to think the novelty has worn off and what with fotm grind being the new thing that is a “must have”, they may as well add the trinity, at least dungeons wouldn’t be a repair fest cus some people can’t play (no finger pointing, a mere fact that some pug runs are hellish, it’s hard to stay alive when 3 other players are dead at your feet because they didn’t move their kittens in time!).
Well, whether the “novelty” has worn off or not has nothing to do with it. It’s the way the game is intended to be played. They can try to fight the system all that they want, but they’re only setting themselves up for disappointment.
Are people still doing this? I thought this was put to rest months ago when the game launched. There is no holy trinity in the game.
Sure, a heavily armored guardian might be able to hold off some damage so that a light armored elementalist can escape to heal themselves…but it isn’t the same. You can’t always draw the aggro and you can’t always heal effectively.
Whatever happened to the idea that everyone was responsible for themselves?
Welcome! It’s always great to see new faces around here. If you have any questions, you might want to direct them to the “Players Helping Players” section of the forums, where I’m sure you’ll find a lot of helpful folks who will aid you.
Why? Is there some belief that it isn’t the same speed? I think I missed that conversation.
So, just to be clear, we’re okay with a big floating castle that can be seen in one section of the world, but not okay with an airship that has a basis in reality (ie. you could scientifically build something of that nature, since it has a blimp-like quality). I just want to be clear.

Some of this has already been explained, but…
The longer a particular enemy has been alive, it will award you a bonus in experience. That’s because if the enemy has been alive in a really long time, granting you a big bonus in experience, then you are likely the first player to come that way in a while (or at least to encounter that particular enemy). Sometimes when you find places like that, you can make a lot of experience just because you explored off the beaten path. So, they are rewarding you for that exploration.
I’ve played on both Dragonbrand and Borlis Pass, and they seem to have large PvE communities (which is to say that I’ve never had any trouble finding people to do dynamic events with or finish a skill point challenge).
While on the one hand, I completely get what you’re saying…on the other hand, I have to ask why you want realism in the game where you’re fighting dragons with flamethrowers side-by-side with cat-people who are throwing ice spells at an approaching horde of robot golems?
I mean…really?
I enjoy the game as much as the rest of you, but…. they need to know what’s bothering us if there is anything bothering us. Things happen in patches and in updates all the the time and keeping in contact with the community is the best way to handle these problems.
They need everyone communicating what could be improved or balanced in the future tho, games great but no game is ever perfect even tho GW2 is the best release we’ve had in a long long time.
This is true. I just wish the community would give constructive criticism and feedback. Spamming the discussion boards with the same threads over and over and over again just leads to hard feelings, locked threads, and a bad taste in everyone’s mouth.
On topic: My wife and I still play nearly every day. We started during the three-day head start and haven’t lost our love for the game at all.
But
—we need to gather material over and over and over again to craft exotic stuff ( soon outdated ) and its not fun
—We need to farm over and over and over and over again awfull dungeon to get exotic gear and its not fun at all
— We need to farm over and over and over and over again Fractal for their stupid ascended ring.. and its really not fun.
So ?
So, you missed the point.
You don’t need to do any of these things. You choose to do these things. I know this because I do not do these things because I choose not to do them, and it has not hurt my ability to do whatever I want. All content is still available to me.
I wish people would quit believing that they must do these things.
Honestly, no matter what people said, the people who were going to leave were going to leave. Even if they had said they were going to remove ascended gear, get rid of all grind and personally kiss their feet wherever they walked, this AMA would not convince a single person who wanted to leave to stay.
Why? Because the people who are reading it and were planning on leaving don’t want to be convinced otherwise. They just want some validation before they go out in their puff of smoke.
Now, I’m not talking about the people who have concerns, complaints or general grievances. You guys are ESSENTIAL to our ongoing community and I love you all for it, even if I don’t agree with you.
I’m just talking about the people who already had both feet out of the door and were just waiting for one last time to complain and saw the AMA as a chance to do it.
I agree with what you’re saying here. If these people are unhappy, they just need to leave the game and move on. Let those of us who are fine with the game and who were happy with the answers given enjoy both the game and the forums in peace.
If GW2 isn’t living up to your expectations, then do something else.
What I used to do in GW2:
- Enjoy the content
- Explore the world
- Make friends
- Participate in dynamic events
- Level my characters
What I do now in GW2:
- Enjoy the content
- Explore the world
- Make friends
- Participate in dynamic events
- Level my characters
Hmmm….seems like nothing has changed for me.
You talk about emphasis on numbers as though it’s a bad thing. But, as a long time pen-and-paper RPG player, emphasis on numbers is exactly what RPG combat is all about. Without that…well, you have something of an action game, which is not what RPGs are all about.
Also, in answer to your question, it wouldn’t be worth ArenaNet’s time to change the combat system. This is for several reasons, but most importantly, it boils down to cost.
To be honest, I rather like the combat system. It is a hybrid between standard MMO combat and action-combat with all the movement and dodging. It’s the evolution of MMO combat, I think.
Is it perfect? No. But it’s really good and it’s quite well implemented. So, I would see no reason for them to change things up at this point.
How could you or anyone disagree with this post? Do you like wasting your time killing every enemy for 5 min without a drop?
I disagree with it for a lot of reasons.
- It would fill up your bags too fast.
- It would require you to stop to collect it all.
- It would hurt the economy.
- It wouldn’t add anything to the game, overall.
No, I think it’s okay the way it is.
Fun is what you make of it, and everyone’s opinion is different.
That being said, I found the thief to be fun with the right combo of weapons.
You can now do everything in LA at any level without ever having to leave. I love exploring (still working on my gold star), but something tells me that most people will just spam LFG FOTW in the ‘LA lobby’ waiting to level there new toons. Ops I forgot, they will be crafting/leveling while waiting for a FOTW group. Sad really.
Why do you care what people do to have fun? Why would you not leave LA to go explore(something you love so much) just because people are spamming FotM in LA?
Exactly what I was thinking. And, on my server, there are plenty of people running around, exploring, doing dynamic events, etc. If other people want to stand around all the time, then I hope they got their $60 worth. The rest of us will be out having fun.
There could be a number of reasons why they haven’t been released yet. Either way, I doubt you demanding that they do so is going to speed up the process. You’ll wait as long as they want you to wait.
I just finished playing and found most of the areas I went through with my character to be pretty heavily populated. Did several huge dynamic events with other players (including two with champions).
I generally don’t go to the Lions Arch much unless I need to, but I did see an increase in population in Divinity’s Reach when I went there at the end of my session.
Explore the world, engage in dynamic events, do daily achievements, and enjoy myself. That’s me, 99% of the time.
Asking where people are on Thanksgiving is right up there with the thread that asked where everyone was on an early Monday morning. There are times where people will be online and there are times where they won’t be online.
There will probably be a lot of traffic over this coming weekend. Try then.
Has anyone considered that maybe a player logged into the game, saw the node and mined it (maybe because they logged out there), and then teleported away to a waypoint to do something else?
Another question I want to ask:
What are they doing to make sure that the types of bugs we saw during the November event don’t happen with the future one-time events?
I just logged off from playing, and Dragonbrand seems to be pretty well populated. Ran into people everywhere I went. Again, I’m not in Dredgehaunt Cliffs, so maybe it’s just slow there. It’s hard to say, really.
I don’t know if it’s bad luck or not. I haven’t been to Dredgehaunt Cliffs in a while (one character left it behind a long time ago, and the others are too low level). I haven’t noticed this issue in other areas, though.
You could try going to another map and see if your luck improves and maybe return to Dredgehaunt Cliffs later. Or, use map chat to see if anyone is around and wants to help you do something.
Honestly, Dragonbrand seems to be pretty full of people most of the time.
