Let me explain it to you: The backstab

in Thief

Psybunny.8906

Rashgal, for a thief player you’re obviously complicating BS combo a lot.
“Real” combo: precast CnD→steal→BS→profit, get Air procs, apply HS if needed. And yeah no need to argue, it took me 5min to get the hang of that. Takes around 1-1.5 secs to setup when noticing the enemy and hits around 8-15k, when using haste/assassins signet hits harder and faster.

This is coming from someone who facerolled in spvp with a thief yday while having no previous experience with the class. I do have experience with a lot of other classes and I consider myself an average player. Top scores most of the games, hit several 300 and + scores. One of those games, when there were 4 thieves in our team one of the other thieves hit 440 points. The other team didn’t get outplayed, there were good builds and honestly good players out there. But our damage/mobility destroyed their glass/bunkers. Was a bit weird being on the other side of the helpless.

Prior to heading ingame I practiced around 5min on golems and it took me around 30min-1h to get the hang of the gameplay. Rolled with sbow/d+d, sbow as opener/defensive set and BS only for finishing or instagibbing someone in 1v1.

Ofc I’ve noticed some traits from some discussions in what to consider, but I didn’t use any specific build. I put something together quickly myself:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fYAQNAV4YlUmiOXcy9E9JFx2jdqTeyfwo+HArWBaC;TsAg0Cno4ywlgLbNOukctoYQxWEA

My thoughts:

  • sbow+dagger 4 is stupidly OP in point fights or when people are reviving. “Bunkers” melt so easily from bow poison and the bounce/cluster is insanely good against mesmers/other thieves.
  • I could escape basically everything, even 1v4-5 situations, I did die a couple of times, but that was more to the reason of being outplayed because I’m not so familiar with the class.
  • Stealthstomp denies most of the other classes downed abilites.
  • I had enough damage/utility on my weaponsets that I sometimes forgot to use my other utilities or elite (pretty much only popped the iwin thieves button when fighting 1v2, and ofc shadowstep to get away, use of shadow refuge aggressively alternatively was pretty interesting)

What to improve regarding balance:

  • Make steal break CnD precast or give steal a short cast time (backstab damage is actually fine imo, teleport instagib isn’t)
  • Sbow needs a bit of tweaking, it brings way too much to the table (poison for heal denial, strong spammable AoE, best mobility/escape tools) and at the same time packs quite a punch (1k+ autoattack that bounces). I find the skills actually ok, but something has to be done regarding skill cost/damage for balancing (not by having the cluster detonation ini cost back).
  • If they fix the stealth visibility issues and make the debuff apply always, then stealth is fine imo. Just needs proper rendering, though I believe any attack should break stealth.
  • Not sure about HS. Ability to pull off around 4 HS after BS combo is a bit strong though. Ridiculous with haste, but pretty useless attack in group fights.
  • Move mug to 30 grandmaster traits (4-5k extra damage from 10 points is way too good)

In conclusion:
With a few tweaks I believe it’s possible to still keep thief dangerous and a good profession, but not so over the top it is atm regarding damage/mobility/mitigation by damage evasion.

My experience with a dungeon today...

Psybunny.8906

  • Don’t rez Detha until mobs are cleared out, since every time she rezzes more mobs will spawn
  • This situation is the worse that can happen in that path, leashing and killing them one at a time is your best option if you lack the firepower
  • Call targets and focus fire big threat mobs first, if you have good AoE cc/damage then pile them up
  • This is a lvl 35 dungeon, but not a lvl 35 PvE difficulty
  • If you fail, avoid graveyard rushing, regroup and rework your strategy
  • Use LoS from pillars and if focused by mob warrs kite them around (usually happens to high toughness chars)

Good utilities&skills to use from different professions in that area:

Necro: well of suffering, well of darkness, epidemic for condi spreading if condi necro or well of power to cleanse conditions, plague form for blind spamming. Basically condition management and interrupt mob necros life siphon with fear.

Warrior: CC from mace+shield or hammer, signet of stamina, longbow, gs or dual axes for AoE. Either CC biggest threat or keep mob warrs under control.
Guardian: symbols, shout buffing, conditions to boons and ofc gs 5 to pull them all together

Mesmer: time warp for AoE burst, null field for cleansing, feedback against rangers/eles, izerker for AoE
Thief: shadow refuge, cluster bomb spam, poison, direct single target burst against biggest threat

Ranger: barrage, traps, bleed spam works wonderfully with a condi spread necro. Focusfire on threat.

Elementalist: pretty much everything, AoE damage and support

Engineer: bombs, turrets for turtling, AoE damage and support

Threat list (based on my PoV):
1. Monk (steady and huge damage that bounces, buffs others mobs, heals)
2. Ele, Necro (if necro can be CC’d, focus ele down first, squishy and huge damage)
3. Ranger (can be higher in list if group has no stability, knockbacks/cripple&bleed traps can be very nasty)
4. Warrior (stuns, selfheal that can be interrupted)

A lot of good input, thanks everyone. I guess my best bet would be to hold aggressive playstyle, stunbreak/block the initial burst, cleanse after the first shatter and retaliate right away? I know that he can easily outlast me, so keeping the fight as short as possible would be the best option for me I guess.

@Darnis, mesmers are not some mystical unbeatable creatures for glass warrs. Some builds go down pretty easy if you know what to avoid and when to fight back.

Need tips against condition/shatter build

in Mesmer

Psybunny.8906

Since I’ve played a bit of mesmer myself I’m familiar with the basics and I have no trouble against power/phantasm builds, but there is one type of build in tournas that absolutely destroys me when I meet him 1v1.

I’m playing glass gs warr, because it’s pretty much the only viable warr spec for tpvp atm. I carry a stunbreak and I think I have decent reflexes.

I believe the type of build I meet has condition creation on clone destroying and weaponsets sw+p/gs. I get overwhelmed and stunlocked pretty fast when he catches me unaware. I think the combo might go something like this izerker->swap->pistol 5 while generating clones by dodge+sword 3 or utility->shatter->sword burst with iduelist. My guess is probably off, so I would love some tips/tactics how to handle those situations better, how that type of build plays and it’s overall strenghts/weaknesses.

Profession compare tpvp

in PvP

Posted by: Psybunny.8906

Psybunny.8906

only one profession that performs “worst” if played perfectly is the ranger. the only viable build is the condition build with traps and spirit elite, and other profs (necro especially) do conditions better and/or have more survivability.

there are other OK builds, such as power/crit and power/pet/regen that give decent survivability and burst with signets, but other profs do it better. for example, my GS/meditation guard brings so much more utility, dps and survivability than my tanky power ranger.

in addition, rest of it goes like this:
- bunker: ele, guard
- mobility/dueling/burst: mesmer, thief
- conditions: necro
- warriors and engies are generally subpar in the above roles, but theyre still kinda viable, which is why you only see a few here and there

unfortunately, the current meta is extremely limiting, and the ranger cannot find itself anywhere. hoping to see some great changes on the 15th, both to the meta and the ranger.

Pretty much spot on.

Profession in most demand (Dungeons)

Psybunny.8906

see attachment for why you bring Warriors, it’s simply because no other class can come even close to the damage output, the faster you kill stuff, the faster you get your reward, the less time you have to spend.

I was in a party with 4 Warriors a few days ago with me playing as Guardian, and boy did it suck. They kept dying over again, taking way longer than it should have. I bet it would’ve been way faster with a party of 5 Elementalists or so…

5 bad ele players will still die the same way. I’ve run with most of the profession combinations I can think of, but for myself most overkill is the 2 guardian/3 warr combo (all melee).

Berserker’s is great. In the hardest PvE content in the game, taking hits is just simply not an option, and killing the enemy quickly gives you less time to screw up.

Your gear setup is good though(maybe knights would be better than PVT for armor..), but I think your trait setup could be better. Try something like 25/25/0/10/10 for glass cannon, or 20/25/15/0/10(maybe stick 10 points into tactics from somewhere) for adrenal health.

edit: i’m referring to the OP btw

Don’t take the 25 from str, the minor trait is useless, get adrenal health instead.

My main set is full berserk (4xogre/2xdivinity) with beryl/emerald rings/earrings and 2nd set is the same as yours pow/vit/tough (5xfighter/1xdivinity). Berserk works everywhere, 2nd set is for “tanking” parts in some dungeons and wvwvw. Your gear is totally viable and fine, just finetune it a bit based on your needs.

We 3-manned lupicus on our first Arah run and 2nd attempt at the boss. At that time I looked up some tactics/videos about that boss and I was suprised that he was easier than I was lead to believe. If phase 2 is the problem then I suggest staying near max range (you can actually reset your hp when you go too far, I dislike that), keep boss constantly in view, keep moving and if you see him looking at you and he flings his hand, just dodge the projectile. It’s quite slow moving. With the projectile and shadowstep the key point is not to dodge too early. Don’t dodge the life siphons, just run away from him, you’ll save your endurance for the big attacks.

Yeah my bad for phrasing it that way, I was still in a pumped mood after we completed. We actually went in again and did AC exp path 2 just the two of us. We’re working on 1 & 3 when we have time. The thing is we actually thought about every strat for each mob and got to know our class really well, as well as the build also. Everything has to be on point or else we would have ran out of money for repairs

How did you do the trap part? One on middle trap and one tanking or clones to “tank” and spam sidetraps?

Healing Signet

in Warrior

Posted by: Psybunny.8906

Psybunny.8906

I really like Healing Signet, but I agree it could use a buff. I think instead of increasing the amount healed, the passive affect should be stronger. say heal for 300, or scale more with healing power.

On a side note since Adrenal Health was brought up, I like that trait alot too but the problem is adrenaline is rarely full . I think it should have maximum power even at stage 1, or lower it’s power over all and tick every second

I run this in PvE, adrenaline gain is massive and I usually don’t have embrace the pain:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fIAQJARTjkOJvNP6OMxBAkCrqyooIgUPgrN5A;ToAg0CtoQygkAJbNOkk1sEYAB

It’s useful at low levels, after that is very useless, the amount it heals per tick is very low and the “burst” heal doesn’t compare with the other two. Doesn’t remove conditions or give any effect so yeah after low lvl gameplay is useless.

Signet+adrenal health are around 600hp ticks total with no healing stat gear, not at all useless. You can out regen a lot of stuff, for example fire oozes in CoF path 3, you can stay afk forever.

This.

Take your best “tank” warrior setup and I’ll still take a guardian any day for sheer tankability. Also, shout heals scales terribly. Banner regen is ok as long as noone else in the group gives regen (kind of like warrior bleeds that way).

I’d even venture to say against mobs that aren’t immune to CC my engi can probably out tank any warrior with the proper spec/gearing.

I agree, damage mitigation by evading or control > healing.

Defy pain is a oshi button and only usable for escaping, but we’re discussing survivability in frontlines. Though I agree that shield is awesome (I never go into spvp without it), mace 2 only blocks one attack and is usable only in a very controlled manner. If you want to outlast and prefer regen, then go for healing signet+adrenal health on top of banners (around 600hp ticks extra if i’m not mistaken). But you’ll be vulnerable to any serious burst and conditions/cc will be your biggest enemy. Don’t get me wrong, banner build is viable in dungeons, situations where you don’t need mobility or as a group support, but imo it’s still not viable in the frontline pvp.
Shoutheal build’s upsides are constant condition cleansing and near 2k hp spamming on 2x 20s/1x 24s cd, two types of heals, since you can sacrifice not taking mending and take signet for passive regen from signet+adrenal health. Bannerbuild will rely on you having a meatshield around you, shouts do not.

I run neither btw, I’m more of a kill or be killed and I would never go into wvwvw without mobile strikes.

Warriors with full cleric’s and spec’d to heal on shouts are pretty beastly tanks, but sadly they can’t compete with the guardians atm.

How so? Warriors has much more ways to negate damage In a degree that It can compensate for their lack of heal abilities, imho.
I mean, see how many seconds a Guardian can stay alive against a group of 20, In WvW. And compare It with a Warrior, both decently geared/traits/etc.

OH, i was talking more PvE. Yes they can negate damage but those abilities have long CD’s so after you use them your kind of screwed, where a guardian can just keep filling his HP back up and their group support is miles ahead of the warrior. Don’t get me wrong, i main a warrior and love tanking with him we just have less to offer, support wise, then guardians atm.

Good point indeed, but dont forget our dps and our higher hp pool.I would say there both beastly tanks, bur Guardian has more support spells, where warrior lacks.
But hey, just get both of them and be happy.Heavy armor forever <3

Pretty much this, warr shines in offensive, guard in defensive play. Not that both professions can’t do both, it’s just that one does one better than the other. I would never ditch my warrior though, even if we get nerfed to the ground. I second that opinion, get both.

And after you blow your 5+3s on 90s cd and 3s on 30s cd? Then what?
Guardians outheal our shoutheal build, which is more viable than the banner regen one.
Warrior survives by controlling the combatflow, knows when to attack and when to back off, we’re not so good at mitigating it and we’re definetly no tanks. We kill before we get killed, that’s it.

Gear doesn’t affect Threat Levels!

Actually it does. Some mobs/bosses target players with highest toughness. Fact.

Try doing a bit more than one lvl 35 story mode before spewing nonsense on the forums.

Try learning about how aggro tables work and take your own advice…

The aggro table of a hostile NPC changes dynamically depending on a number of factors, in order of importance

These are the factors:

closest target to them
who is dealing damage
top damage dealers
who is using a shield

A shield is the only factor of gear, toughness is not on the list.

Your trolling aside, is there any point to this thread other than you wanting to change GW2 back to safe and dumbed down tank&spank mechanics?

I haven’t trolled anyone, you guys are bringing arguments to the table and I’m disproving them with facts and logic. Try harder next time!

GW2 aggro system is not based on your normal aggro table.

There are more variables, bosses here have intelligent aggro. They’ll harass vulnerable players based on their gear (condition bosses target high toughness, low vit players, trash CC’ers go for the bursters, tanky chars to lock them down) and status (low/high hp, CC’d, etc). Shield has no importance beside the increase in toughness (which proves my previous point). Different mobs choose their targets differently to maximize their damage.

Your lack of knowledge and experience in this game doesn’t qualify you to teach anyone about this game.

You can wiki quote all the aggro definitions/tables you want, but these don’t apply here. And the increasingly defensive tone you’re taking just proves it.

This brings me back to my previous question:

Our method:

*we move in a tight pack
*noone attacks any mobs and everyone cleans fires
*we jump to the cliff behind the ore to lose aggro
*if magg fails to run to us, everyone except one waypoints back to start

Magg has horrendous AI and is absolutely suicidal, doing it the “right” way is stressing and prone to failure. Only way to reliably do it all the time is with the use of bugging him a bit. That shouldn’t be the solution.

A bit offtopic: the following door guarding part is harder imo and it basically has only two viable ways to do it. Either with VERY strong dps party or nogear graveyard zerging.

We’ve completed it with the dps route, so it’s doable, but we had a pretty specific setup in that group. 2 dps warrs, 2 guardians for example. This should not be a requirement. Silverring HP or spawn timers need to be toned down or damage from trash in that part reduced. This part effectively leaves groups with not so strong dps setup only the graveyard running option.

I actually prefer lower lvls and people who haven’t done runs before, since they seem to cooperate a bit more and don’t try to “speedrun” everything. And it’s a good practice for lower lvls to learn the game and mechanics in a safe environment.
Decent lvl 80s are unfortunately so so rare and usually a lot of them mess up due to their overly confident and elitist nature. Of course you can get lucky and get decent players, but those runs usually end up in silence and a little to none communication.

Where’s the fun in that?

No, that would be bad. They could do the same thing they did with the elementalists during beta. They overnerfed them wayy to hard. Now they need additional buffs and/or bug fixes. Slow and steady is the way to go.

LOL. Let me guess what class you play.

About 2 weeks before release they buffed thieves and mesmers through the roof, and nerfed ele into the ground. VERY kneejerk adjustments. But now that the game is released they take MONTHS before doing LITTLE adjustments.

The longer the wait the more players will quit the game.

God, would you stop it with the “ele so weak” QQ already. You’ve been a broken record on this subject for the past 2 months in both gw2guru and here. And you somehow have to bring this subject up in every single thread.
Any half-decent pvp player knows how good and viable eles are, so no, they didn’t “nerf them to the ground”. I neither play thief or mesmer btw, if you think I’m defending anything.

On topic:
Balance will come, it’ll just take a bit of time. In the meantime I’ll stay away from the FOTM, keep playing my profession that I chose in BWE1. I’ll stick to the playstyle I like and learn to play with the toys I have, rather than envy the neighbor kid’s ones.

All type of furry kittens happen, that’s life.

Based on the screens, there is no “proof” against them, only excellent food for trolls to further grief you. Your reaction is basically Internet 101 on how not to react when getting griefed.

Furthermore, I’m actually pretty sure that kicking someone from a party isn’t a bannable offense. It’s the risk you take, when you run with PUGs. There are all sorts of people out there.

A good example from the other day:
I had successfully run two paths with PUGs. We were getting ready for 3rd path and we had to swap out some players. One of the players who joined randomly wanted to vote kick one of the lower level players out. So instead of accepting it, I had the vote starter kicked instead and took someone who wasn’t a complete kitten.

Another example that relates more to your case, again in a PUG, where we actually kicked someone before the last boss. This was due to that person running ahead all the time, QQing that we were not skipping everything like him, that we actually wanted the $$ from goldenrings etc. He didn’t cooperate, annoyed us all and he headed to heart of the mists before the final boss without a word. So kicks were made, we 4-manned it and much rejoice was had since the party had a much better atmosphere after he was gone. To keep someone from a party or not is purely the partys decision.

The hard and cruel reality is: deal with it.

I can't get into the mystic forge cauldron :(

Longbow/Greatsword dungeon build?

Psybunny.8906

I play GS/LB, not full glass though. This is around the closest I got to my PvE stats with PvP calc. My toughness is higher (around 1.4k) and hp a bit lower in PvE.

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fIAQJARTjkOJvNP6OMxBAkCr8yooIgUPaDO5A;ToAg0CtoQygkAJbWOkkZtoYAB

I swap between signet of might/signet of stamina/CC as 3rd utility slot. Gear is full berserk except the earrings/rings, those are beryl and emerald for extra hp and toughness. GS has pow/prec/crit and LB has pow/prec/cond stats. Very flexible build with high damage, good for using a lot of different weapons and switching roles on the go without having to rebuild. You can switch to axe/mace+shield, rifle, hammer on the go and not feel hindered by it.
You can shake of quite a lot of damage, but your main playstyle with this build is to stay mobile and moving. When using melee weapons with lower mobility, I’d suggest getting a vit stat on them, helps a lot to have a turtle weaponset in your bag.

This build has almost zero support (except the AoE condi remove), but that can be increased with going full soldier runes. Your job with this would be the DPS and it brings a lot of it while not being too squishy to accomplish it. You can easily “tank” some of the dungeon parts when switching out some major traits and swapping to different weapons.

Though I agree on the points of fixing tooltips/etc, rest of your ramblings are just bad. I’m fine with thief SB 5, adds an interesting and much needed mechanic to the class (not a thief myself btw), wait until you see how guardians can teleport with a 1h sword. Mesmers will NEVER 1-shot anyone or do you mean mesmers on trebs, considering you brought up the portal play. Everything will die 3v1, unless the attacking players somehow go afk in the middle of attacking. Though good bunker players can keep bad players away for quite some time, they all die. And very fast against good players. Castbars aren’t needed, I actually prefer that you have to look out for animation vs big text “OP skill, avoid it”.

Less smashing your face on keyboard&tak-tak-tak away and rethink your arguments through.

Me personally, I will continue to invite people who are of recommended level, of any profession. Everyone is welcome with me as far as I’m concerned as long as they don’t continuously mess things up, disregarding advice or generally have a bad attitude (I do tend to go with guild groups first but they are my priority being guild leader and all).

Nice to see we still have players with the same mindset as mine. Let’s go for a run together sometimes?

Is this really what you wanted from an MMO?

Absolutely perfect for me. I guess players like me are the target audience and they totally nailed it. I absolutely love that there is no gear treadmill, equal pvp, pve mechanics that endorse friendly behavior and the absolutely beautiful world this is all presented in. Of course there are a lot of areas this game needs improving, but the key mechanics are definitely not one of those.

I love that I’m not forced to do anything I don’t like and I can sometimes if I want to slow my pace and smell the roses so to speak. My main is 80 with max gear, around 6-7 exotic weapons on her, 100% map completion and I still have loads of stuff to do. My “endgame” consists of sandbox style approach to the world, socializing (dungeons), pvp and the occasional alt leveling without the worry of getting behind on my main. My current goals are to master all of the dungeons and push my limits as a player as high as I can, that in PvE and PvP. I believe even when I’m bored from the PvE/dungeon part (that is until the next expansion), even W3 would be enough to keep me occupied for a long time.

The mechanics people bring up as negatives, regarding mechanics GW2 doesn’t have compared to other MMOs, I actually see them as positive, because a lot of them were the things that I hated on other games, but lack of them in here, keep me hooked on this game.

tl;dr: Yes

@swiftpaw: will you settle for around lvl 45s doing your example? Maybe in white gear to be equal. Leveling another char to 35 to prove that you’re wrong will take some time.

It’s true that some professions work better in certain dungeons than others, but that is not related to lvl. You gain no noticeable difference if people know how to play. I never understood what’s the deal with path 3, it’s easier than 2 for me atleast.

Hammer vs Mace/Shield

@Ivanov, to avoid kiting you need either a mobility set (sword+warhorn) or something to CC them from afar.

I see my two sets as damage+ranged CC/melee lockdown+damage mitigation. I’m using axe+mace for damage+ranged CC (i have immo on cripple traited), makes my job of catch kiting players a lot easier, thieves/mesmers/rangers have a much harder time to escape. Cripple+immo with axe 3, follow up with mace 5 kd, get close and melt them with axe AA+frenzy. Mace+shield gives you two blocks and 3 interrupts, weakness and slow but strong AA on mace. I agree this setup has a lot less mobility than say a gs/sword+shield setup, but it’s a lot sturdier and less predictable.

Not a lot of people use this type of setup, so it’s always fun to see people panic in hotjoin, because they have to face a warrior other than the memorized BC+frenzy+100b (not bashing btw, still a viable setup).

Oo, that’s a good way to train newcomers. Totally noting it down.
