Holy kitten… with the “we heal as one” change “Guard” may have just become the best skill in the game. 10 seconds of swiftness, regen, protection, and stealth on a 12 second cooldown? Yes please.

Stealth is, sadly, not a boon. It’s an aura.
It cannot be stripped, converted nor stolen.

Everything else – yes. It’s gonna be cool the first few days till it gets nerfed. But then again – BM bunkers (like myself) have some nice days ahead.

Oh kitten , that’s right. Anyway I guess it’s still all on a 16 second cooldown since it needs to be based off of HaO’s cooldown. Still even if they nerf it to 50% I’ll be pretty happy with an extra 5 seconds of protection every 16 sec.

Although to be honest I may end up dropping the skill all together on most of my builds and using QZ in it’s place for that extra long quickness and super speed. I’m not sure yet.

I really can’t wait to try these changes out. It’s kind of sad that I am much more excited about these balance changes than I am the druid spec.

Yeah this buff to Heal as One is far better for the class and build options then Druid. They relly did drop the ball there.

Well I’m not saying druid is bad. The traitline and cele form are going to be incredibly strong and useful for power and condi builds, it just looks really boring. The only things that look slightly interesting are Ancient Seeds, Lunar Impact, and Natural Convergence. I can see how those will synergize well with some existing skills. But the staff and the glyphs look terrible and don’t seem to mesh well with the baseline class.

I think that the glyphs are supposed to be most effective with the Druid stuff, but can have niche roles in other situations. Most of them have very short cool downs for pretty decent effects and they provide versatility that a lot of our utilities don’t really have in general.

What does it provide that’s worth taking that we don’t already have? A very short cripple/weakness? We have tons of that. A 2 second daze on a 40 sec cooldown? They can keep it. An absolutely terrible buff to party damage? I think someone did the math already and it came out to something like 2.5% more damage. I doubt that is worth the loss of personal damage that we would take by not putting something better in that slot. The elite is mediocre compared to entangle and Strength of the pack. The only one slightly interesting is “Stomp”… oh I mean Glyph of the Tides, which is basically stomp without the stun break and blast finisher.

They provide all of those things you mentioned and the ability to be small heals, AoE stun break, condi cleanse, AoE pull, ally heal buffer, and they all deal decent damage as well. You have to consider the effects in base and celestial form to see how they provide versatility.

Not only do you have to trait for that, you also have to practically be standing on top of your party for them to get the affect. Compare that to a shout guard, who has double the range and is converting one of those condi’s to a useful boon. Also who needs a 300 range pull? Why isn’t that a stun, knockdown, or launch to synergize with ancient seeds?

Another thought is why don’t any of them offer anything unique for the pets? Something like pet teleports to target and performs x cc. The glyphs are just mediocre and they feel like they were rushed.

You don’t have to trait for any of the stuff that I mentioned, if you’re in the Druid line you can get all that stuff just from glyphs in base/celestial form.

Wot? You absolutely have to trait for the healing and condi removal.

No, Glyph of alignment heals and cures condi without the Verdant Ethings trait.

We have no idea how many or what kind of condi’s it removes, the healing is pointless since that form already cranks out a massive amount of healing on every other skill, the radius is so small it may as well only affect you, and the active is so bad outside of cele form that it’s a waste of a utility slot.

Guys I think they do this so they can more easily read the feedback really which shows they are trying.

If they wanted to more easily read the feedback they should have left Heim’s thread open since it had everything very clearly organized in the opening post with room to add more feedback. This thread is a garbled mess because there’s a dozen different conversations that got smashed together.

druid trait: Ancient seeds does not work...

Knockback should be included for PBS and CA synergy.

How? Unlike the others, Knock-back happens and is over in basically 1 server tick. Nothing (damaging) in the Ranger ‘rsenal is fast enough to land while the target is "CC’d". They’d have to add a lingering tag to every knockback in the game to create that window to strike.

Well you could be knocking the enemy back into aoe you already set up such as a trap or barrage that they are trying to run out of, or you could be triggering it off of a pet knockback, or another rangers.

I’m personally hoping knockback does trigger it and they just screwed up the tooltip.

Yeah if the mods could stop merging all the threads that have very different discussions going on that would be great.

Ancient seed elite trait

in Ranger

If you use utility skills for the CC, you have no traps, the only trap with CC is Spike trap on a 4t5s/36s CD, You’d have to use Moa pets with daze or canines for the KD, as well as a SB/GS for the daze. Which is a lot of investment.

It is smart to have such a CD, you can take advantage of it to make it happen all the time, but it requires an entire build made around it and gimps your pets etc.

Shortbow isn’t my weapon of choice but it’s not terrible for trapper builds. I’ve also taken to running heyena/wolf lately in PvP, dodging 1 hound leap on point isn’t that tough but when you have to worry about 3 leaps, taunt, entangle, and blowing an opening dodgeroll through the point to trigger the traps….. there’s only so much cc they can avoid in such a small area.

Of course what I really hope is that they add knockback to the list of CC that triggers the trait so that it’s effective with my power build.

The main reason of the lack of usefulness of the tome of courage was the ability cd rather than the heals/buffs.
The support provided by the tome was excelent in determined situations (Talking about WvW & sPvP).

The actual Druid spec may introduce a new role into the game. The main issue here may lay on the ability from the devs developing new PvE encounters where dodge is not enough and you need actual healing for surviving.

Then you deal with the “Group looking for healer” problem.

@OP I agree that their should be a little damage thrown in for tagging purposes. Personally I’d like to see that ground target auto attack strike up to 5 players (considering how clunky it will be to use) and then add some more CC to the other non damaging skills. Seed of Life could add chill, and Tidal Surge should get a knockdown/launch for synergy with ancient seeds.

I agree that the specialization feels very rushed, unfinished and doesn’t really fit the ranger or druid theme.

However I still think the trait line and cele form will actually be very good for the class.
Now if we could just swap that stupid staff to a main hand dagger with bleed on auto attack, and do something to make those glyphs worthwhile, we will be in business.

Breaking the meta away from zerker, is such a game changer, I’ll believe it when I see it. As is this spec only really does one thing, heal like crazy. I seriously doubt this will be remarkably popular come the beta weekend, when ranger need 3 mins to kill something the other classes drop in 30 secs. Conceptually a support roll is fine, but this is pigeon holing. There isn’t wiggle room or really any decent synergy. This may play great with the raids, but I’m fairly sure many in the player base will want nothing at all to do with this.

Remember you can pick up the druid traitline without using the traits or staff. You could run a condi/heal BM druid with axe/dagger sword/torch. You could even run it as a trapper since you now have a solid cleanse, good mobility and a ton of sustain. I don’t see how this lacks damage.

Some of the glyphs look like they could be blast finishers. Would be cool if they were.
Speaking of glyphs, I feel they become much better with the trait. Considering most of them are low CD, having an AOE heal and condi cleanse seems good.

Yeah blast finisher we be good, stun break too. Like I said, pretty much anything. Even with the trait they are underwhelming because the radius is so small. Bump it up to 600 and they might start being useful.

It looked like staff 3 only moves you across the ground like ride the lighting or mist form. That is the perfect skill to become a teleport, which is something rangers have desperately needed in PvP. It also seems odd that the weapon doesn’t offer any real condi pressure, you’d think the vines would poison or bleed. It would also be nice to finally have a weapon that reliably applied a condition on its auto attack.

Glyphs are completely underwhelming. Most aren’t even close to being worth the risk of getting in melee range. Consider adding outgoings boons to them, have them steal boons from enemies, make them ground targeted, give them a larger radius, effects that last longer, or pretty much anything.

As it stands the only thing I can see worth taking is the trait line for the condi dump and the crazy sustain. The staff and glyphs look unfinished.

Druid looks freagin awesome, just absolutely awesome.

Between Druids, Chronomancers, Hammer Engis, Reapers, Revenants I see LOTS of changes incoming. There will indeed be a lot of QQ, especially from commanders / guilds who are unable or unwilling to adapt.

However I do have 1 very valid concern. Condi specs. As most people here know except maybe the new players, condi specs are largely useless in zerg play and are only used in roaming and SPVP, even PVE other then the top 3 burn specs are pretty much on the low end.

We have been playing power based builds for 3+ years already and only recently started condi after the recent changes. I see this as a flip towards the old instead of the new, to me, the game in general needs more individual active cleansing, but far less aoe cleanse spam in order to balance the small / large scale, but the druid seems to be taking this in a very wrong direction and cause an even further imbalance rather then balance.

Yup, condi regen ranger just took on a whole new meaning. Step aside mesmers, this just became the new king of roaming.

Am I the only one who thinks the staff and Druid should be condition damage and healer?

Would be too strong..
slam some conditions on and run like a coward while healing and letting the conditions tick on your foes

That would be my guess as to why its not done that way.

I mean…. I’m totally going to do that anyway, I just won’t be using the staff. I agree would have been a lot better off with some condi added to it. Might be able to pull off crit bleeds but it seems to me axe/dagger sword/torch with celestial forms for the heals will still be a hundred times better than bringing staff.

The only reason I might use the staff is if the 3rd skill is actually a teleport and not just a fast movement skill.

Personally I think it looks boring as hell but it will also be ridiculously strong in PvP. With the passive 33% speed buff and all the healing, condi ranger will give d/d ele a run for it’s money as the immortal on point fighter.

Seeing as the game is balanced via PvP it’s going to be interesting to see if Ranger is OP on point. If so they’ll have to nerf it, that would effect how well they can heal in raids… they could be painting themselves into a corner here.

That’s what I was thinking as well. The only way I see this going without druid taking massive nerfs is if they finally separate PvP and PVE balancing the way they did in GW1

"Balance" vs Skill Cap Between Classes

in WvW

Posted by: Puck.9612

Puck.9612

That is a terrible idea. That philosophy is why ranger shortbow went from being a solid weapon to a complete piece of garbage.

Actually this example kind of makes the point. If a weapon/skill/trait is under utilized it should be adjusted upward (slightly). If it is over utilized, it should be adjusted downward (slightly). In this case if they go too far and people stop using it, they would adjust it upward realizing they went too far.

The Ranger Shortbow (I mained a ranger for a long time) was a series of nerfs some inadvertent (the animation nerf) and some just plain stupid (the range nerf… this one still kittenes me off) but there is no mechanism in place to correct those nerfs. Same with P/P for thieves. When they removed Ricochet because it didn’t fit into the new trait line well, they effectively removed an entire play style from the game. There will be no hurry to “fix” that issue since it doesn’t effect “balance”.

In the “balance” mentality when players stop using a weapon/skill/trait, it effectively becomes balanced because it is no longer upsetting balanced play so it isn’t perceived to be a problem. This is why almost every class has weapon sets, skills and traits that few experienced players select even after years and hundreds of updates have gone by.

After years of trying to “balance” builds in WvW, might be time to try a different method which will create more diversity of builds and thus more enjoyable play.

The problem with that is they are far too slow with their balancing, and as thief pistol and ranger shortbow have shown us, they aren’t too eager to admit their mistakes. What will end up happening is weapons and builds that are perfectly fine will end up being nerfed, the ”buffs” they give to other builds will be poorly thought out and the profession will be left in a terrible state for months or even years.

Definitely remember to unblock them though or it will be a pretty one sided conversation. I know that should go without saying but you’d be surprised by the amount of people that will leave you blocked while they start whispering.

They have removed the ability to pm someone you have blocked. It comes up with an error message.

Oh nice. When did they do that? I’m pretty sure you could still PM people you blocked about a week or 2 ago.

Afraid of being over buffed? The op realizes this is the ranger section of the forum right?

I’m more afraid that druid will suck so bad that they nerf the rest of our skills and traits to make druid more appealing. Give it the good old shortbow treatment.

"Balance" vs Skill Cap Between Classes

in WvW

Posted by: Puck.9612

Puck.9612

Balance is probably the wrong way to go about this. Diversity is a far better ideology.

Anet should be analyzing traits and skills that are used too frequently and too infrequently. If some trait or skill is relied on too much, it should be adjusted downward. Likewise if some trait or skill isn’t used at all, it should be improved.

Essentially they should use the economy of player builds to guide the population into a diverse build set. What hurts GW2 isn’t balance as much as it is the inevitable boring play that results from unused and overused build elements.

That is a terrible idea.
That philosophy is why ranger shortbow went from being a solid weapon to a complete piece of garbage. Rangers and shortbow weren’t op in anyway whatsoever but because too many rangers were using shortbow over longbow they decided to nerf it into the dirt to make the longbow more appealing. What happened instead was rangers were left in a (even more) broken state for years until they buffed the longbow.

You make adjustments according to what is unbalanced, not according to what is popular.

Also for those of you claiming condi necro is faceroll…. The only thing condi necro is ”faceroll” against is other condi builds. Quit rolling such cheesy builds and you won’t have a problem.

Courtyard

in PvP

Puck.9612

Courtyard is a demonstration of why “pure” PvP is less than optimum.

I doesn’t bring anything to the game that isn’t already provided by WvW.

More importantly, conquest PvP has some of the attributes of a sport. There are fairly specific goal and stratagies that vary a bit from map to map. In theory one could play an entire match with no one dying, rotating from point to point in a kind of race.

Courtyard on the other hand is simple lowbrow brutality. I don’t see any aspect of sportsmanship, honor… In short, courtyard doesn’t qualify as sport. If I’m playing for simple body count, a first person shooter game ( many of which are free to play ) would be more than sufficient.

There is plenty of strategy to be found in deathmatch. You can see this in fights that occur in OS, GvG’s, or just look at GW1 which was a much better PvP game.

You don’t see strategy in courtyard because the map is terrible for 5v5 and the majority of the people playing are built for conquest and would rather suffer through a bad match than change their build for 1 game.

Tips for a New Ranger?

in Ranger

Often when running my Warrior(Ham/Axe&Mace), I come across Rangers that have ZERO problems with survivability. What I don’t understand is the almost permanent stability. Signet of Stone gives what 3 seconds, where is the other stability coming from? Is it being transferred to the pet?

This isn’t whining, I play Ranger as well. This is constructive curiosity.

Signet of Stone doesn’t give stability, signet of the wild does (which you can also have a 2nd traited SotW that procs at 50% health). Other than that you are probably seeing the elite shout “strength of the pack”

I’ve said this before, PBS in open world is probably the biggest reason people end up disliking rangers. That skill has probably done more harm to the ranger reputation than the minor benefit it brings when used correctly.

Minor benefit? That skill is a game changer when used correctly in PvP environments.

So With All These Reflects...

I would like to see some of these added.
-“opening shots are now unblockable” added to any of the Marksmanship minor traits.

-MDG changed to Unstoppable- Hilt Bash, PBS, Concussion shot, PoS, Crippling talon, Throw Torch, and Hunter’s Call are now unblockable, stun the target for 1.5 sec and shatter reflects.

-Increase the GS auto attack damage to compensate for our ranged being so easy to counter, also increase the number of targets to 5

-Reduce the aftercast on main hand axe and don’t count it as a projectile (like necro)

-Increase the cleave range of pets so they can hit moving targets, and increase their number of targets to 3

at 16k HP and 3k armor, rangers are practically two-shot by any good Mesmer.

And this shows the problem with GW2’s PvP. Doesn’t matter how much armor you have when you can still get crit for 5k+.

GW2 has dodges, evades or invulns to allow you to take no damage at all. If it didn’t, then armor would be more important, but it does. If you take the 5k hit, its because you didn’t dodge at the right time or position yourself correctly. This game is more about good play than stats, so armor is only a minor part of play. People who have played a lot of other MMOs make this mistake all the time because they are very much about stats.

That argument would hold a lot more water if he hadn’t specifically mentioned mesmer who can burst you from stealth.

Sure they can, if they take you by surprise, in which case you wouldn’t have been able to dodge it anyway, meaning your situational awareness is not up to scratch. Plus the clones etc are not stealthed. If you saw the Mesmer go into stealth, its still a L2P issue as you have many options to create distance, kite, block, evade, taunt, fear, immob etc. More armor is helpful in those situations, but the absolute majority of damage mitigation is from dodges and evades etc.

Yeah, if you saw them go into stealth, which isn’t always possible when they can chain together close to a minute of stealth. And before anyone says “mesmers don’t just hang around in stealth all day”, there are plenty of situations where they will approach you fully stealthed. If you are in PvP they can see a point is being contested, in WvW someone else may have spotted you and given your location over chat or TS, etc.

GS is an utility weapon there is no sense to put more damage into it,

According to ? Just because you have convinced yourself of that it doesn’t make it true.

I’d argue GS is meant to be or dps weapon. Maul is a burst, swoop and crippling throw hits for a decent amount and keeps the enemy in melee range, and hilt bash sets you up for a MoC burst.

If they would just fix the auto attack damage you would instantly see less bearbow complaints since people would start going melee a lot more often.
Also with all the counters to ranged damage being added with the expansion they really need to beef up our melee to compensate.

I really don’t get what your post is meant to be about, so I’m just going to ramble aimlessly.

I decided to try out longbow again for the first time in ages about a week ago. The first time I tried it shortbow was considered to be far superior. (to give you an idea of how old my ranger is hehe).
I don’t know who these people you’re talking about are tbh, but maybe they’re firing a longbow in melee because they’re actually targeting a mob a long way away and have piercing arrows traited? Or want to proc any of the on swap abilities rangers get like furious grip or fast hands, and know that rapid fire is equally effective at any range and it’s only the auto-attack that has different coefficients?

shrugs My weapon of choice will always be main-hand axe for my ranger simply because I enjoy it best. But I needed a change after using it for so long.
I’d rather maximise fun than maximise dps. But I’m probably weird. (Greatsword is a very effective way to maximise fun btw =D )

When did we get fast hands!?
I’m guessing you meant quick draw? I swap to longbow in melee range all the time, so I can do things like PBS someone off point or to interrupt a stomp, use hunters shot to kite, etc.
This thread makes no sense.

Courtyard

I like Courtyard. A lot actually. What we need is build templates for us to switch between TDM/Conquest/Stronghold

The map I absolutely cannot stand is Skyhammer… omg it’s beyond frustrating.

I agree build templates is the best option but let’s be real, how likely is that to happen? We need to support the easy fix if we want to actually see something happen, that’s why giving deathmatch its own queue is the only solution worth suggesting.

Deathmatch is THE BEST game type.

Not without build templates and especially not on that map.

If you people really supported deathmatch you would be supporting the op. Giving it a separate queue means
-players will be built for it, leading to better fights.
-Anet will be more likely to create new maps for it rather than leaving one map in its own queue. Laving it in the queue with the rest of the maps takes pressure off of them to further progress the game mode.
-You are less likely to have leave or afk at spawn.
