@OP you will find that WvW is an entirely different universe to PvE.
In WvW, if you intend on engaging in ‘duels’ alone against 1 to 3 players, as opposed to running with the Zerg, you’re going to need to have gear and a trait set-up specifically designed for that. Otherwise, you’ll be eaten alive.
As for weapons,
SB/GS is very good for said small duels, but LB/GS is better for engaging larger groups when running with the Zerg.
Ignoring pets for the moment, at the end of the day, you’re only going to get 30% chance to chill someone. If you use food—and it only works at night—you can get an additional 40% chance, but factoring in the chance overlap;
30% + 40% = 70% / 2 = Average chance to chill (at night) 35%
So basically, a large majority of the time your opponents will not be in a chilled state, which is sad, given that one is built and traited entirely for the purpose of chilling enemies.
Unless my calculations are wrong (specifically concerning the chance overlap) a Chill build is going to detract from your overall effectiveness, it’s untenable.
I’m not sure we’re taking about the same thing…
By “rubber banding” I mean the game ‘jumps’ (teleports) you to where it thinks you should be after bad network lag… at least, that’s how I perceive it.
Hi OP,
You have too many points vested in Nature Magic/Vitality—and the last two traits in that tree do not serve your purpose—put those two points into Marksmanship/Power, and take Malicious Training giving your pets 50% condition duration increase.
Take Bowl of Garlic Kale Sautee food for +40% condition duration—you do not want to ‘waste’ all the effort you took in making a chill build for your enemies to suffer only a small duration.
Does anyone else have serious ‘rubber banding’ when using the short bow ‘3’ skill?
Wha, whaaat?? But is it not what some would call the “Regen Ranger”?
The invincibility build. (WvW)
You’ve all seen them; the Warriors, Guardians and Mesmers that simultaneously take on two or more opponents—and walk away victorious like it was a stroll in the park.
Please post the Ranger version.
>
>
Bonus issue;
Unless you run with the Zerg 100% of the time, what is the point in gearing up with a build that doesn’t grant permanent invincibility?
…I did practically the same thing with chill instead of vulnerability, and it’s been a blast.
I tried a full Chill build the other night—Traits, Runes, Sigils, Food, the lot. Short Bow|Sword/Dagger.
WvW 1v1/1v2, it sucked. Only 30% chance on hit (Sigil) to trigger chill, unless it’s night whereby you can increase it to 70% (with +40% Food)… then even if you do trigger it, you’re looking at only 7 seconds max of duration, and that’s if they don’t have any condition negation.
To build for Chill, compromising on so many other interesting and more effective combinations just seems completely untenable.
Could you tell me more about your build and experience/success?
Referring ya’ll back to the OP, note the armour at 3159.
There are still occasions when poof! Thieves disappear and then, tink tink! tink tink!
…and I’m downed from full health in mere seconds. What gives?
Answering Q2;
Like what Eggyokeo said, pick a class that you enjoy playing.
I solo roam on Ranger, and no other class. I do a lot of WvW.
In my experience, high armour and medium to <high power with an even spread on the rest has given me average (50% – <80%) success in 1 v 1 situations, which reflects I suppose, said even spread and my average skill level.
But there are some really skilful opponents out there with very specific setups and tricks, that to defeat you would need to run a specific build of your own, which would probably render you less effective in the more frequent, ‘average’ situation.
TLDR;
Ranger offers a fun and versatile and if played well, effective WvW roaming experience.
Thanks everyone, some interesting points! I was mainly interested to know if the numbers themselves seemed low, average or high rather than a build critique, but again your points bring me to further questions;
@Oak da vite; ‘Ignored’ healing power because standard heal gets me back almost half HP and I like to rely on my high armour, Signet of Stone, Protect Me!, and evades for invulnerability instead. I had recently considered Bark Skin, but was put off by the trigger threshold of 25% health—seemed too dangerously low.
@Ryuujin; I love the quick fire on the shortbow, it’s always active and always applying some condition—unlike the Long Bow which I feel leaves one ‘stranded’ for too long, especially if you aren’t traited with Quick Draw. Having said that I ran with SB/LB for the longest time.
@Cufufalating; Definitely not full offense as you say, but I had hoped it would qualify as upper end offense combined with high armour for survivability. The two pets I have chosen have the highest power points of all the pets, what do you mean “they are low damage pets?” Their control abilities are excellent, however.
@Holland; I’ve never had that much power—Zerker build—I just hate getting downed so quickly. But other than those invincible enemies you fought, what about the general populace, did they melt like butter?
In general, I’m reasonably happy with my Ranger WvW performance.
But sometimes I meet seemingly immortal opponents—I can blast them with everything I have, over and over, but it’s like bows and arrows against the lightning.
Then I wonder if my build is rubbish. Can I just get some general feedback on these numbers, are they low, average, high? Are these roughly what other people have?
Power: 2059
Precision: 1990, 55%
Ferocity: 464, 181%
Cond.: 466, 30%dur.
Tough./Armour: 2085/3159
Vitality/HP: 1133/18000
Runes of the Ranger w/+7% damage
Shortbow | Sword/Dagger
Hound/Brown Wolf
Troll? Just in case you’re not…
The underwater combat is decent, and beautiful under water.
There used to be a lot more under water combat area in WvW, but a lot of people complained so Anet ‘improved’ it.
…and please, an end to the “juvenile” pet status! C’mon, I want a fully grown veteran pet like Eir has!
With Ranger, you need a specific build, and a specific strategy to defeat most above average-to-highly skilled players of other classes.
Take some time to look through the traits, and skills and see what combinations/tricks you could pull off, and then go get some gear to augment that.
Or go to a build site and look through the many builds there—the work being done for you.
Simple answer; Yes, absolutely they can 1v1, and 2v1.
TLDR
…But there are a lot of varying factors, including that even in a 1v1 situation you’re going to meet a better player, with better equipment, and a certain build that out-does your (current) Ranger build.
As a side note, I consistently win in 2v1 encounters (and sometimes even 3v1) under water. It’s wierd, it’s like I get this massive power boost when under water, so I often retreat there when losing a fight—my enemies follow me in there expecting to finish me off but instead they end up dead. Wierd.
I would like more skills, no new pets, but more customization and cosmetic options for the existing pets.
I do not believe it will be any good, and you will be eaten alive by pretty much everyone.
Because,
There are people out there that can do 10K+ damage against high-toughness builds in a few seconds, so with all your points in Vitality (to reach 30K) and therefore low-to-zero points in toughness and healing you will take even higher damage and you will not be able to heal yourself back to the full 30K anyway.
Second, with all your points in Vitality, you will do very low direct damage, and 950 condition damage is merely average.
Eaten alive, I say.
I’m getting a fair deal of loot, from normal mobs and also WvW kills.
However, that will be because I currently have 107% magic find.
What’s yours at?MF does not affect the quantity of loot only the quality…
Which means the OP’s trash drops are appearing to me as blues, greens… etc.
20% of my 107% is from an MF utility infusion… but, yeah more is more…
I’m getting a fair deal of loot, from normal mobs and also WvW kills.

While it is, without question, the OP’s fault, Doctor Chung Man’s post is excellent, and that is, without question, what should happen.
Make it so, Anet!
Great charts!
However, they remind me that even after nearly two years of play, I am so far from acquiring all of the necessary materials so as not to need to look at the charts for another two years! Also the sheer amount of gold required (if one were to purchase most of the stuff) blows the mind. Ridiculous.
Also, the weapons’ appearance versus cost doesn’t balance out. Kinda sad that really.
Jeez, why draw the line at ‘Legendary’?
That word has been used since the beginning to refer to the “final stage”… at least you’d know with certainty that there can’t/won’t be a tier higher then Legendary, ever.
C’mon, it’s the last tier… they have to do it.
(but I feel it should be almost horizontal from Ascended)
Even if they wanted to change it to the suggested design, it would be a major legal headache. No way it’s happening. Just no way.
The solution to stop stacking in a meaningful and fun way is really quite simple.
Dungeon boss’ AI needs a simple re-write;
Upon detection of stacking, instead of mindlessly coming after players, they could cease the pursuit and draw the players out, throw a grenade or some other anti-stack ability to force players to spread.
The endless indignant replies to these kinds of threads touting that we have waypoints and speed boosts—everyone gets it already. The (many) OPs get it already also.
The overwhelmingly clear theme is that those waypoints and speed boosts are unsatisfactory.
Mounts—regardless of desirability—will not be in the game any time soon, and, waypointing—regardless of convenience—does not appease many concerned with the travel-grind that is particularly noticeable on slower-moving classes.
Therefore, I suggest;
The gem store speed boost be increased to a non-stacking 33% ~ 40%.
lb is great in a 1v1…. one of our best weapons imo, i mean, i main lb, but i don’t see why you would choose sb over it, other than in a pure condi build, lb is a beast if u use it correctly
shadowpass, I hear you—I mean, as I said, I was loathe to give up LB period—but frankly speaking, of the four skills on the LB only two are viable close range 1v1 (the burst and knockback), so you take a -50% hit on effectiveness while you wait to weapon swap.
Hello Rangers, im comming here as a Veteran Warrior, and i must say i had an encounter with a really skilled Ranger last match, usually i find Rangers no difficult at all to beat, but this one was a challenge, he make me look like a fool trying to hit him haha.
Im a power dual sword/lb, he was a ShortBow/Sw,D using Lynx as a pet (saw no pet swap), lots of regen, decent burst and cond at the same time, really fast moves, i thought he was even using hacks hehe, but the strangest thing was that he could bunk a lot of dmg aswell.
I got a dust alt Ranger, would like to know what build could be that one? Its a playstyle i like, but never had “sucess” playing it.
Regards.
If you lost the match, sounds like it maybe, might have been us!
Either way, this is/was my set up;
Short bow, Sword, Dagger, Lynx
Skills: Troll Unguent, Protect Me (pet), Regen, Toughness signet
Armour stats: Pwr, Prec, Toughness with 6 Runes of the Ranger
Weapon stats: Main on Condi.
(edited by Pure Heart.1456)
Call me a slow learner, but I used to run Short Bow and Long Bow for the longest time—-probably hundreds of hours.
(SB for the quick fire and condi-essentially used it like a melee weapon)
(LB for the burst, knockback and AoE damage against zergs)
However, I can now say after dropping the Long Bow (in favour of Sword/Dagger)
My performance in 1v1 encounters has increased significantly.
This is because the LB is just too slow, and too ineffective up close in melee.
TLDR; Don’t use the Long Bow in 1v1 encounters.
Choose Short Bow and any other melee weapon.
it’s you or your pet that can’t stealth again not the target.
wrong its the target that can’t stealth. go try it :P
Well, if that’s the case it’s kinda lame. I mean, a pet should be able to “sniff out” stealthed characters. The owner and/or the pet can’t stealth? wtf the Ranger has one 3s stealth skill and there’s one pet that can stealth but both are practically useless what is the point!?
Andred makes a point.
However, How do you even trait/spec. to fight a highly skilled stealth thief with each profession? There are virtually NO skills or traits that REMOVE stealth, so perma stealth thieves just wear you down without even taking a hit.
@havoc
That’s what I thought initially, but that isn’t the case, it’s the target of the skill that get’s ‘Revealed’.
@Taku
That’s what I assumed, but it seems like an awful “long shot” to achieve for little gain.
Are there any other practical skills or ways to remove stealth in combat?
Dear all,
How do you counter/remove stealth from an enemy (with Revealed 4s) …using the “Sic ’Em” Ranger skill?
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Revealed
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/%22Sic_%27Em%22
This skill can not be used without a valid targeted enemy, and the effect will end prematurely if the pet’s target becomes invisible.
So, if someone stealths you can’t target them, so you can’t use the “Sic ’Em” skill to remove their stealth. And, if you target them with the skill before they stealth, you have only 4 seconds of Revealed before they can simply stealth again.
I fail to see the usefulness here. Am I missing something?
Thank you everyone.
Dear all,
As many would know, there is an infusion slot in ascended equipment. (offensive, defensive and utility)
As far as I can tell, the max. (combat related) bonus one can apply there is +4.
Am I missing something, or is that really the best that can be applied?
Also, if I infuse the equipment with these said attributes, can I later infuse it with agony resistance?
Ranger is the best “jack of all trades”.
You have melee & ranged weapons, a pet, medium armour, and a mix of condition afflicting skills and support & healing skills.
’nuff said.
@Andred, you can “Ninja” cap most of the waypoints and points of interest in the WvW maps… you don’t necessarily have to fight anyone…
The sigils/runes will prove to be far more of a ‘game changer’ in WvW than PvE.
Minor/Major for PvE is fine, definitely want Superior for WvW.
this sucks
I don’t know if I’ll even be playing gw2 anymore by the time they add it again…
In that case, it shouldn’t even matter to you! …Unless you having that gas mask skin now would get you laid now, with a girl (or guy) who is moving away to another city sometime in the future…
Definitely sounds like a network latency issue—I had the same problem, based on what you are describing.
1) Make sure that you are connecting to a game server closest to you. (The U.S. or the U.K)
2) Make sure that you have a quality internet service provider.
3) If you are connecting to a game server from a very long distance away, (or even a close distance) there are some things that are out of your control; The physical internet lines and/or internet routers connecting you to the game server may be temporarily cut or broken, and therefore your game data will be directed to the game servers along a far longer and slower route.
In my case, I had this problem for several days doing nothing, until obviously, the physical issue was resolved (by service and maintenance personnel somewhere in the world)
Ranger is great for solo play, because if you get downed, your pet can help you up again—I can’t count how many times I’ve been out in the wilderness and my pet has come to save my sorry a**.
There is food available that reduces condition duration (and hence, ultimately damage)by up to 40%. Check the wiki for options!
It may take you some time to ‘discover’ the many wonderful combinations available to you in selecting your play style—regardless of the profession.
For example, by selecting armour with statistic combinations, and also applying appropriate runes to that armour, and then applying sigils to your weapons and then selecting appropriate traits, and finally skills, you can make any profession fit your play style.
It’s so flexible and fun. Collecting the gold and/or materials to obtain the gear you want to reach your play style is part of the journey and fun also. Enjoy!
China Market > Player Housing + Trait Build Save combined.
When the China release is complete, and the massive funds start to flow, then perhaps we’ll see more ‘serious’ Game Content.
I like underwater combat.
In fact, I sometimes use it as a safe haven to escape land battles, as I am more powerful under water with my pet against multiple foes.
I suggested swimwear way back when they released the Southsun Island content.
I thought it was breathtakingly disappointing that swimwear wasn’t added in the gemstore for that content release. It’s a real shame and missed opportunity.
Many of the armour skins in this game are just boring.
The ascended armour pieces are breathtakingly uninspiring and lacking in any kind of ‘sparkle’.
If they do put in Legendary Armour, I sure hope it is far more excellent-looking than the ascended pieces.
Housing—yes—on the condition that there is meaningful utility in it for the owner, and for other players. Because there little point/value otherwise—you need multiple reasons to go there.
“Utility” examples could be unique, interesting npc merchants with unique and/or random gear for sale, and events in/near said housing.
I don’t know if I’ll even be playing gw2 anymore by the time they add it again…
