I was simply stating that the problem is we are not going to address the issues that the passive sustain is creating until we make the active use have a place in combat so even if it is not THE PROBLEM, it is the blocking issue.
Jon
The problem is that the whole Healing Signet idea is toxic and unhealthy for the game. It promotes and rewards passive play.
hey I’m in gandara aswell spoj
Why does PvE balance matter, if I may ask? A blind monkey could do PvE in GW2. People could probably run Arah naked. A level 1 could get gold from the highest level events. You can earn living story achievements by buying things off the TP and being a clicking enthusiast.
Yes, you may see lower numbers on some of your spells, but does it really impact you in any way at all?
Some people do run Arah naked. And it’s just as easy.
The funny thing is they splitted skills for PvE and PvP in GW1 and there were a LOT more skills in GW1. In GW2 you have less skills and apparently they got lazy and don’t want to split anymore.
Keep trying to balance 2-3 completely different gametypes at the same time, it’ll work out Anet
Tow line is the only skill that self-CCs the user for no apparent reason and does nothing good to the enemy to compensate.
The problem isn’t A.E.D. The problem is all the other heals that offer good reward for low risk. Bring the other heals in line and suddenly A.E.D. is fine.
My sugestion:
1)
Smoke Vent: Changed cooldown from 20 to 45 seconds
Creates a blindfield for 3 seconds. When the blindfield ends, nearby foes are pulled towards the location of the previous blindfield.
Pull: 350 range
2)
Smoke Vent: Changed cooldown from 20 to 30 seconds
Creates a blindfield for 3 seconds. When the blindfield ends, nearby foes are burned for 2 seconds.
3)
Smoke Vent: Changed cooldown from 20 to 35 seconds
Creates a blindfield for 3 seconds. Attacks from this field deal more damage.
In my opinion, no.
I’ve already seen thieves spamming that skill to hell and completely wipe any boon from the enemy.
It is just two casts of the skill and 4 boons are stolen from the enemy and an huge amount of damage is dealt. That means that it will be an huge nerf to Elementalists, more than on Guardians.
Hitting from behind or the side, also, is extremely easy when Flanking Stike reposition you right behind or beside your target. You just need to press the 3 button repetitively and all the job is done. I see no skill in that, honestly.
I would agree to the 2 boons stolen only if the damage is severely nerfed and to make LS to be available only when Flanking Strike actually lands.
This will seriously reward skilled thieves and push the skill cap to higher levels.
This is what would push the skill cap to higher levels:
Larcenous Strike – Increased cost from 2 to 4 initiative. This ability now restores 2 initiative upon hitting a target.
Spammers dont hit their targets as often, thus get punished more often. Skilled players hit their targets so they will be rewarded.
If not, there should be some kind of warning when you start lvl 50, don’t you think?
Welcome to the dungeon forum. You must be new here. Anet doesn’t want to bother in warning you before screwing you over. A fine example is the ascended stuff you can purchase with Laurels and apparently you cannot equip 2 of the same name.
Or you know, telling us which dungeon paths we completed for the day.
I could go on and on and on. It’s an endless cycle of bad QA.
This should have been posted on GW2 General Discussion. Atleast it would have some exposure and seen by atleast a Dev or two before being closed/transfered to the Trashcan aka Dungeon forum that no one from Anet browses except for the moderators to gank our crying posts
Please bring back his old quotes. Those were way more engaging and some were quite humorous aswell.
thieves have s/d and everything else kinda sucks in this meta. Even tho i think s/d lacks a lot like AOE, condition… They dont really teamfight super well
Well aren’t you a little unexperienced thief.
My first time playing 3 matches in over a week as I decided to take a break.
First match: We lose by a lot, in large part because my team decides to run the orb in spirit watch despite us not having control of more than 1 point for more than a few seconds at any given time.
Second match: Utterly obliterated. I’ve repressed the details but it started out 75-0 and didn’t get any better.
Third match: I zone in to find 2 thieves on my team and 3 warriors on theirs. Went as expected (even though the warriors were absolutely skillless, they just spammed CC and won anyway).
And I said to myself.. why am I doing this? It’s annoying, I can’t find a team to play with, the rewards are better doing pretty much anything else.
This is definetely not the reason for me,i couldnt care less about the things you mentioned. For me its the lack of gamemodes/maps and proper rewards that would otherwise keep you interested and get you going so you want to keep on playing because you know youre building up to something awesome…The pvp chests reward,do not care….The occasional dye inside..do not care..the silver reward, do not care….Its like throwing the dog a bone, its not an actual reward, its like …here…uh,have something atleast. Also gamemodes for gods sake, imagine having a variety of gamemodes like king of the hill, deathmatch, last man standing….just to name some.
The best reward we PvPers could get is the Monthly and Yearly Official tournaments with good prizes, just like we had in GW1.
I do both actually. I’m very high ranked on SoloQ, when you get to the top like that people actually offer some challenge.
In PvE dungeons unfortunately once you get all the mechanics it lowers the difficulty so much. Thats why I either kitten myself by soloing/duoing Arah or rotate back to tPvP when I’m feeling burned out.
EDIT: Apparently g)imp is a naughty word.
I will pick a new player that explicitly says that he needs some advice anytime over a 1-year old arrogant player that thinks he knows best but fails hard and blames others
Well I’m not gonna lie. I don’t find the mechanics behind LOS’ing mobs to a corner any challenging.
Wouldn’t you guys rather that they improved the mobs AI to provide a bit more difficulty?
I love Katana and it would be an honor to play with him. Hehe. Guess I don’t know why you agree with the sentiment of playing the meta but do not agree with the OP…
Hey Lilith, let’s play one of these days heh?
Ok. I’ll remember the account name of the OP just incase he ever hot joins one of my groups I’ll instantly kick. I don’t want to play with that type of person… I PLAY HOW I WANT and WITH WHO I WANT… And I’ll do it drunk too.
And jesus… Why would you want to run a dungeon 1000 times and run each one as inefficiently as possible? That just sounds like utter torture and I’m not even hardcore. I just want loot. So, to get loot as much as possible as fast as possible that means I have to play to the meta and dps as much as possible as fast as possible and everyone else in my party needs to as well. If they don’t like it they can GTF0 of my party.
What the hell did I just read?
You seem like a very edgy person, no wonder you get drunk often. Read patiently before dishing out on people that don’t care about you at all.
I’m neither hating nor loving the build. I was simply, kindly asking about the effectiveness of the build since I was curious myself and I always thought Scholar was the way to go on any class. Apparently I was not mistaken.
Remember my account name and please, do kick me if I happen to join your party, I wouldn’t want to carry a guy like you anyways. The worst kind of tryhards are bad tryhards.

Class: Any
Worst Enemy: None
This doesn’t mean that I win all the time. I certainly don’t. It means that it doesn’t matter what class attacks me, because the majority all attack the same way (as if they are fighting the test golems in HotM). They only think about what their class does and not what mine does. They seem genuinely shocked when I fight back.
I’ve seen thieves attack an mm necro like it was a glass cannon mesmer. Warriors trying to stun lock mesmers. Berserker guardians standing still trying to unload their skills on a warrior. I flatten these players in seconds regardless of what class they play.
When I do face someone who considers what my class does, the battle becomes interesting. Sure I may lose, but I have a lot more fun. Even the much feared mm necros aren’t a challenge if you know what you are up against. Certainly there are some classes that are more difficult than others depending on what I am playing, but I’ve found nothing unbeatable.
Don’t expect to kill every class as if they were test golems. Too many complaint threads are about classes people believe that they should beat. That’s not how it works.
I would agree with you, but I can’t.
GW2 classes simply don’t have the tool-set to adapt their play-style.
A S/D Thief for example is good at one thing. Spaming dodges while pressuring the target. That doesn’t change in any case. He’s going to fight a Mesmer the same way he’d fight a Necro or a Warrior….because that’s all the class is good at.
Sure you might look to avoid specific moves but the general play-style doesn’t change. And the same applies to every build. A Warrior will cycle through his attacks the same way against a Mesmer as he would against an Engineer. Because if cooldowns are your only limitation then there’s no reason not to use it.
Again you might aim for specific abilities, but again the general play-style doesn’t change.
And this is why I laugh whenever people think GW2 has remotely skillful class combat. What it has is a number of 2-3 trick ponies running around trying to see which trick can counter the other’s.
Yeah? Then instead of using S/D Thief as your example please try again with D/P. D/P changes it’s playstyle according to the encounter and that’s is why its interesting enough for me to keep playing it.
This thread has come a long way.
Nemesis just a question. Would you consider adding sections to your next guide? I mean, a WvW build, a supportish build, a PvP build, a speedrun build, etc. This way people can chose what they want to go for, you are not forcing anything down their throats and they get to pick what they want.
Isn’t that a better option? Your viewer count is quite remarkable, you actually have the power to inform these players with all the options out there.
DaShi and CntrlAltDefeat that’s all fun and dandy until you are a D/P thief trying to get that tanky condi engi of your point with no one to help.
Thats how I based my list. On my actual playing, I won’t bother to 1v1 matchups I cannot win and I will keep doing my job which is to roam and creating outnumbered situations.
Class: Thief
1. Tanky condition engineer
2. S/S Longbow Condi tank warrior
3. Another Thief
why do pvp players think they should have what pve players have while not wanting to play pve? u want it play pve then.
the same way pve players think they should have what pvp players have while not wanting to play pvp, like pvp skins? oh wait.
Spoj yes it’s the might duration one.
He was talking about he had 50% crit from being in DS so going scholar the crit would be wasted.
Just how worse it is when compared to Scholar ?
I had a Necromancer ping his build and it didn’t include Scholar Runes.
He used this instead:
http://www.youtube.com/user/Iamoneandiamlegion/videos?view=0&flow=grid&sort=p
Just how good is this build? Is it better than the scholar alternative?
The technology just isn’t there yet
Someone has to make a glossary of all Anet terms with their meaning on the right.
Who will be our brave champion?
Teldo is back.

Why doesn’t interrupting a skill disable the skill for the duration of it’s cooldown?
Can this game stop catering so much so casual/spammy play and start getting more skillful?
it’s like they said they were investigating dungeon exploits over a year ago.
investigating it = AINT NOBODY GOT TIME FO DAT
Does Caed still play?
I met a “Heralded Achiever” and could tell he was in soloQ for the dailies.
Anytime he won, he would repeatedly jump on the enemy teams body. Whats really worse was that he always ran with 2 other people and was proud he killed a solo thief with his lil “gang”. also he ran dat hambow mmmm….
if you get affected by someone jumping on you in PvP
you’re gonna have a bad time
What is the best build for TPvP staff ele?
Or let us trade tournament chest for mystic coffers.
Wait, if you interrupt a gamechanging skill like Battle Standard it only goes into 4 second cooldown? Where’s the punishment/reward? Seriously?
Escuse me, I don’t play Ele, but what were the nerfs that took D/D out of the scene? Was it any in particular or just the other classes getting stronger?
1. game fixed (condiimun removed like AR,Diamond skin …. ,Spirits from ranger and MM necro removed from game, bunkerish classes should make no dmg )
2. Infrastructure
3. Fun > E-Sport
4. NO HARDCOUNTER TO ANYTHING
5. gamemodes?^^i forgot
6. Remove skyhammer from soloQ
Hey! Only 5 wishes!
No changing your mind, Skyhammer is staying!

Phoenix is far more difficult to land than grenades. Do you really believe that landing grenades is harder than ele staff AoE at those ranges?
This caffynated guy is an obvious troll. I should have known before going in and feed him.
the best joke ever. alone that statement shows that you have no idea what balancing means. i hope its just a joke. or do we really need 8 suggestions from biased “pros” like u to balance the game? must be a really enjoyable game u try to create.. so why not call in your friends for other “pro” suggestions?
i start to wonder if other classes are not relevant, why u need them to justify some suggestions?
Now I know you’re trolling. Riot devs use this reasoning all the time. “It doesn’t matter if Tryndamere can hit 500 damage a hit at level 6. That doesn’t mean everyone else has to. Tryndamere’s damage is balanced for Tryndamere.” I see you as the type of person who would compain “Corki’s R is weaker than Ezreal’s Q! Fix it!”. Even though Ezreal is balanced for Ezreal and Corki is balanced for corki.
Sorry Jumper. I agree with most of your Thief changes, but Riot Devs balancing is an utter joke. If you want to discuss real balancing you should always refer to Icefrog from DotA.
The very fact that the Lead Balance Dev at Riot was fired from Guild Wars 2 Balance Team should scream something to you.
- 1. More build diversity
- 2. Heroes Ascent + Zaishen Keys
- 3. More population/tournaments
- 4. Region-wide Heart of The Mists
- 5. Dueling
5 things are not even close to what this game needs, to be honest.

How long is the Daze on leap+lightning field combo? The wiki doesn’t say anything.
How is a grenade any harder to land than a Cluster Bomb Ostrich?
They are equally hard to hit but an important fact is that engi commits to the fight and will die when missing while thief can disengage (even though this will be suboptimal for the team on the long term).
I see plenty nades engis running with rocket boots, thats a solid disengage
What? I enjoyed the post, and that’s it. I’m not going to roam around the forum spamming “ALL IS VAIN” or “mightymeak is a god omg”. That is stupid and very imature.
It’s like twitch.tv chat is leaking to the forums.
Jumper,
You are proposing some pretty good changes. But what I would like to ask you, and I think it’s important that you make it clear with a yes or no, does this game actually need more buffs? Is thief really a priority when it comes to balance?
If I remember correctly, ANET has stated that they think the power creep of the game is currently at a good spot, using bunker Guardian as the reference point.
To answer your first question: Yes. Many of these skills and weapon sets are laughable—take Dancing Dagger for example. I can sit there and use full +initiative and +damage traits and utilities and spam a 4x bounce Dancing Dagger as hard as I can. It won’t be able to out-dps a Warrior’s, or even Guardian’s passive heal. Or I could play condition Pistol mainhand and spend an hour attacking them and do no damage. If ANET says this is balanced, then it only makes sense Thief (excluding D/P Trickery and S/D Acrobatic) needs to come up to their level.
Is Thief a priority? Well that depends on what game balance means to you.
Does it mean multiple viable builds and weapon sets, equal in strengths for each class?
Or to go even further and say each build must be balanced within each weapon set and no weapon set like the current S/P or P/P should exist only using 1-2 skills using very little skill or tactic?
Or is it simply the best possible build, leaving only 1 with slight or no variation for each class, if infact, said builds are balanced against the other 7 builds (classes)?Because when it comes to Thief, we are much closer to the latter.
Great answer Jumper.
Though in my opinion, things like spamming #1 on pistol from a safe distance kind of should be “bad” (not that it needs a buff right now, since it’s completely unviable even in kittening hotjoins).
I think something you need to consider is the reward for the skill it takes to pull something off. There’s been many of theese things in the past, like 100-blades, S/P thief, bunker elementalist and HGH engineer that has been way too efficient compared to the playstyle. I think that simply changing the numbers of a skill is illogical, you should add some feature to it, that demands mechanical skill or some kind of tactical deployment in order to make the game more interesting and intriguing.
His changes to Larcenous Strike do help differentiate bad thieves from good ones, for example, which is absolutely essencial in creating a skillful game.
What I would like to see done, and please bear with me until the end here, is having a specific aftercast for every skill, but it would only apply if you repeated the same skill. Using a different skill would result in 0 aftercast . This way you are effectively nerfing spammers (heartseeker spam, flanking strike, pistol whip, disabling shot, etc.
I’m not sure I was able to get my point across, I’ll throw some numbers to this to see if I made myself clear (note: the numbers are totally random)
Autoattack
Heartseeker (0.5sec specific-aftercast)
Shadow Shot (0.5 sec specific-aftercast)
What this means is if a Thief uses Heartseeker, then tries to use Heartseeker imediately, before he can use Heartseeker a second time he will have to wait the 0.5 sec specific-aftercast.
If a Thief uses Heartseeker, Shadow Shot and rotates back to Heartseeker he won’t have no aftercast on the first heartseeker and on the Shadow Shot, because he rotated between different skills!
I think this a healthy change to balance the no-cooldown initiative system, and where more damage comes from the expense of consuming huge amounts of initiative, leaving a thief depleted and vulnerable if he fails “the big combo”.
A bad thief using the same 3 skills, but on a spammy-nature, would end up with this:
- Heartseeker
- Wait 0.5 seconds
- Heartseeker
- Shadow Shot
It’s significantly worse and it feels clunky! Now Thieves feel the incentive to rotate between other skills in their skill set and not just spam their best one. This could lead to different rotations depending on the situation: a D/D thief and a target is low and running off? Heartseeker+Dancing Dagger+Heartseeker turns out way more eficient than Dancing Dagger + Heartseeker + Heartseeker, because of the in-built specific aftercast!
How is a grenade any harder to land than a Cluster Bomb Ostrich?
I’m not willing to pay money to participate in a tournament, when the PvP competitive-scene relies only on community initiatives with very little to none official company support.
Sorry but this is going nowhere until they take the wheels.
Use it at your own risk.
No thank you!
Thanks for the answer. My new game? Join those parties then report for exploit. Well… wait… do they actually kill the bosses or skip? If they kill, do they do that in a safe spot or facing the boss?
Save yourself from all that work. By doing that you are caring more than Anet cares about dungeon exploits.
yay circlejerk!! don’t we all love circlejerk? it’s like we’re on reddit!!!
Just cut this crap.
D/P thieves are far more useful than S/D thieves. They should not be in the same tier.
S/D thieves could use a revert on the introduced cast time for IR, while compensating by reducing the gap-cover distance from Flanking Strike by 33%, so 3-3 spammers would be punished by bad positioning and counterplayed by good positioning.
Dojo, engi pistol autoattack being weak is a good thing, rather than negative. The other classes/weapons could use that nerf. Let’s encourage less autoattacking shall we?
TL;DR:
People need to learn the difference between skill floor and skill ceilling.
Engi might have a low skill floor, but it has a skill ceilling higher than most classes.
It’s in the middle. It’s not a complete faceroll class like ranger, thief and hammer warrior, but it doesn’t take much skill to play effectively. No real skillshots and mostly just spams things off cooldown. I would put it about the same as necro. Maybe a little easier because you don’t have to keep track of cooldowns on weapon swap and death shroud.
What? How is thief a faceroll class?
How is Necro harder than engi? No skillshots? You call those cap-point-size marks a SKILLSHOT? Engi’s don’t have to keep track of cooldowns on weapon swap? Yeah they don’t, they have to keep track of cooldowns on kit-swap, which implies a much larger number of skills’ cooldown to track.
Basically everything you said is bullkitten.
zapv I don’t know if you are a troll or just stupid. I sincerely hope it’s the former. Learn to read please, you keep spewing the same words over and over again.
Ludus, regardless of misinterpretation, you wrote that part poorly and has such could perfectly hold a double meaning. Don’t act kitten about it.
