Also, better achievements eg hard mode style ones in season 2 story. I think they need improving and n execution, but they are the right step forward.

A bit off-topic but, is there any anet’s statement about this?

I also found the “hard mode acchievements” a bit underwhelming as a feature, even though I love the idea of a hard mode version of missions. For example, why must you be forced to play the entire instance once to even unlock acchievements? This works nice in real hard mode, because it offers layered levels of difficulty/ progression, where you first get the basics of the instance, and then attempt to do a harder version of it. However, most of the “hard mode” acchievements so far are about acchieving things that can be easily acchieved on the first try, and do not change the entire experience enough to justify a replay. (There are exceptions.)

I agree there are tweaks that need making. Being able to complete first time as a ‘surprise reveal’ is one. Overall, i like the concept though. They are a step towards more than just tick box achievements and can be entirely optional and yet rewarding.

No anet statement though. I guess that would be a diff thread or something for the main comms one Gail has been so good at keeping pace with.

Wardrobe……brilliance!

Horizontal progression. I am assuming the collections tab stemmed from that CDI? Also, better achievements eg hard mode style ones in season 2 story. I think they need improving and n execution, but they are the right step forward.

The journal from the living world CDI. I still dont think the game is anywhere near where it should be for this living world concept, but the journal did a great job of bringing a sense of structure and organisation.

Thats my 3!

Oh and other ideas for cdis..

Underwater. Love this aspect of the game. We all know it needs work…a great collaborative one, which prob would need low management but have great interaction with dev insights.

Lore. Lore implementation needs work as im sure the lore forums will vouch for. A dedicated one in those subforums would stimulate discussion between two very passionate groups….lore enthusiasts and writers.

Communication? Disappointment.

The increase in communication from Anet has been both noticeable and welcome. There’s no doubt the increased presence on the boards and will drive a positive atmosphere long term on these boards (although I still maintain they need condensing -sifting through hundreds of threads of the same subjects day in and day out is a chore for us readers, let alone any poor moderator!).

The big issue for me remains the uncertainty around the future direction of the game. As I said in the comms post, in any other MMO I play (some AAA, some not), I know where we are headed or whats on the horizon. Not necessarily exact details, but there are regular announcements on what is coming. Usually it comes as blog posts from the Games Director, but often as emails or forum stickys. This is without exception in every
I play or have played….except GW2.

I enjoy GW2 the most, yet I just can’t fathom the complete and utter clamp down on what is coming. I understand a no spoilers policy and also avoiding complaints about “broken promises”, but those sort of people will throw their toys out of the pram no matter what. Let the rest of us have some to look forward to

That’s my 2-penneth for what is may or may not be worth!

GW 1 Nostalgia

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

This is a tricky subject for me. I really tried to think of what I “miss” from GW1 that isn’t here and I am really, really struggling. I find that GW2 does much of the equivalent stuff better and what it doesn’t have, isn’t a big deal (to me personally).

- I actually don’t miss huge numbers of skills
- I don’t miss Hard Mode
- I don’t miss the story (at least prophecies and factions – they were truly dire)
- I don’t miss the restrictive pathing on the landscapes

I guess if I was to name what I do miss;

- The races as they were in GW1. Really, the differences between races feel blurred and lost now they can be part of any alliance. Charr don’t act like Charr, Norn not always acting like Norn and so on. Maybe in reality the strength of charcters was just better in GW1.

- I miss certain regions, but I suspect they will come in time. Certainly Maguuma is a massive improvement over the GW1 counterpart for me. I have equally high expectations for Far North and Crystal Desert.

- I miss questing. Never thought I’d say that and I know it doesn’t really fit in GW2, but DE’s need more depth to them to be as fun as some GW1 quests. I think this comes down to GW1 presenting its lore better despite have a naff story.

- Alliance Battles. Great memories. WVW is fun, but AB remains prob my all time favourite pvp experience and it was perfect for casuals like me.

- Content added in large chunks. I understand the LS I really do, but I miss having a big chunk of content put in front of me and doing it at my leisure. Some of that is addressed with S2, but it’s still not quite there for me (yet).

- Dervishes. Before they utterly destroyed the class for me in the last rebalance, these were so much fun!

Music – launch GW2 music was poor (except the GW1 stuff which rarely cycles in). The new S2 stuff is very good though.

- The Banana Scythe. Best…weapon…ever.

That’s it really and none of those are game breaking exemptions for me. I’m mostly happy with GW2, I just want to see a bolstering of core content (ie more DE’s, improved bosses, unskippable dungeons) , return of SAB, and new zones

Alright, I’ll try.

There is no challenge in anything after two years,

Hmm, hardcore mode? If the character dies, it’s gone for good. Can not WP back to life, can not be rezzed from full dead(dead, not downed). If the character has any rare or better equipment it gets auto-sent to the mail box, otherwise it’s deleted along with the character. Make a new char and start over.

How far can you make it on one life?

My only suggestion is to remember why people loved GW2 from launch and why it was so acclaimed – ie build on something that was so excellent from the start, with more zones, more dungeons (w/o skippable sections!!!), improved rewards and challenges.

You guys know how to do this – Marionette, BAttle for LA, Tower of Nightmares, the invasions, gauntlet, SAB are just some examples of enjoyable endgame content that applies to groups, solo players and even mini game lovers. They just aren’t here anymore, so either bring the appropriate ones back, or bring their ideas into the game.

I think what it comes down to is – you’ve kind of got on track with your living story, but have narrowed your focus so that all the other good things you guys can make are being overlooked (seemingly – you seem so saddeningly reluctant to share your plans compared to other MMO companies). Personally I think that is down to the demanding schedule you set yourself with the LS and how inflexible that schedule has become.

I think the overall idea is excellent, but some of the achievements baffle me. Collect 25 junk items for eg. Then you bin them. That’s just something shoved in to bump up the number of collections in the list. Collect all dragon jade weapons…but no others. Collect all craftable armour skins…just lacks vision and purpose.

These are minor criticisms, but they feel almost like something put in to gauge reaction to the idea, rather than wholeheartedly committing to something which is in fact a really good concept.

The potential is fantastic – especially if they use them to fully explore the world a bit more and reward appropriately for the time invested.

All the black Lion Ticket weapons have collections, they are just “hidden” until you have at least one of them. So that just means that you only have a Jade weapon(s).

Why not post in the main Guilds thread, dedicated to bringing ideas about improving guilds rather than start a separate one.

While I really think a CDI about guilds would be very usefull, I just think it wouldn’t be very usefull to discuss guild related things at this time.
The forum is flooded with (healthy and constructive)discussions/raging/complaining etc. about the latest feature patch. That’s what is moving the forum right now.

I think it would be best if someone of the development team, doesn’t necessarily has to be Chris, would first open some kind of CDI regarding the latest feature patch.

I would really like to see improvents on guilds, don’t get me wrong, I just think we won’t get 100% out if it while the majority of the forum is moved by another thing.

Many others and myself are reading the other threads. i think its best to hear all the comments and give folks more time to play with their alts before discussing so……

….once i get my doc finished then let’s begin the CDI.

It would be interesting to start the thread off with a few summaries pooled from the dev team about;

1 – why Guild Halls were not felt to be something core to launch considering their integral part of the original game

2 – their current vision for guilds and how they fit in with the pillars of the game

3 – Anything that they might be working on that falls within the remit of what can be communicated to us.

Not so the community can beat the team with a stick, but to provide valuable perspective/insight and start the discussion off strongly.

People moved onto other things, but the sentiment remained active, even if the in game presence moved away.

They were not promised. Intended, subjected to change perhaps. But never, once promised. It is statements like this which caused the devs to be cautous in their communications to us when words were incorrectly interpreted. Lets not reurn to those days..

As long as possible ideally. I don’t see the gain of killing off all the dragons – I’d rather see it being a constant war against these foes. I was a bit surprised when we killed Zhaitan in the ps to be honest. Poor fight aside, it was still a bit anti climactic.

These are beings who caused havoc over periods of time, lay dormant for thousands of years. If all 6 are destroyed within a few years….that makes them a bit rubbish in my book.

Thread explosion! Thanks for all the (rapid) responses. There seems to be a fairly consistent feeling that yes, these fights can be more engaging without becoming as difficult as the jungle wurm.

I like some of the ideas being presented, feel free to keep the discussion going. It’s also helpful to hear not only what’s working but why it’s working for you.

On the topic of using siege weapons as a role mechanic in these fights, is that something we want to see more of? I often worry that siege weapons can be just as boring as standing in the safe corner pressing the same attack. Do you feel that they can also cause some contention between players?

Yeah the Shatterer issue is one issue you will generally get a consensus on from the community. It has been discussed hundreds of times and overwhelmingly the ask has been for “more than button bashing the foot”.

It doesn’t have to be Teq style – altho I’m of the mind dragons themselves should always be challenging. Golem is an example of a fun fight which isn’t really hard (but punishing if you don’t pay attention). Jormag is probably closer to what you should be aiming for – a longish fight, with punishing mechanics, where realistically it wont fail.

Right now, Shatterer might as well be a brick wall for all the fight it gives back. Which is a shame, because it is a visually stunning boss. Probably the best of the three

A question on behalf of veteran players

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

I’d love to see the figures on how many NEW accounts have actually been created… this system is created for such a small percentage of players… there can’t be that many new accounts JUST being created… GW2 has its player base, and its been dwindling, not increasing…Why? because there isn’t much development for the VETERAN BASE.
WvW/sPvP and high end PvE stuff is BARELY been touched yet we want the couple hundred new players that joined this game in the past few months to have an easier time leveling!

This game is NOT daunting, it is NOT difficult. This was by far the easiest MMO I’ve played in terms of leveling up a character to the max lvl cap… it’s incredible simple and was already fine the way it is…Everyone who plays MMOs knows rewards FROM leveling are never meaningful… because its not endgame stuff yet… after you hit 80, thats when you start getting into the good stuff and all your old junk is pretty much thrown away… why bother updating rewards for the leveling process when it will be junk eventually?

idk, some of the development choices are so weird to me…This update hardly effects any of us and there isn’t that many new players flaunting to this game and more aren’t going to come just because of this update lol…Why not actually use resources to develop WvW/sPvP/Dung systems instead of a new player re-vamp lol…such an odd decision.

I remember when MMO’s were still getting hundreds of new accounts starting everyday years after launch. GW2 may be no exception, this is just part of the strategy to keep them going. I’ve known more people to give up on the road to level 80 and see none of things vets see on the way, than I have who have stayed the course.

A tip for Jormag; your bazooka will have a fire shield will will block the fear attack. As a warrior you also have access to a very wide number of stun breakers. In theory, you should almost never need to worry about the fear on a warrior – he has a tell tale animation prior to his fear attack.

There is a cooldown on the stunbreakers and I have seen Jormag’s claw fear four of five times in a row, so there is no stunbreaker left for me. Pact-gun also has a cd on its shield and rolling out of the animation to break the cd feels like an exploit to me, so I don’t do it.

And a lot of my fellow warriors do not even seem to be aware of the effects of Shake it off.

The wurm in Caledon forest can also fear, but it is just once in a while, so it’s ok. With Jormags’s claw, it is overused in the first phase of the fight and nobody in my guild likes this fight for that reason.

Also, when did the champs start dropping boxes there? I thought that was removed?

Was readded again some time ago. I really dislike this, it is not on par with other world boss events, where champs to not drop loot (like fire elemental etc.)

Your stability skills will hold off at least 2 fears if you time it right, combined wih shake it off (manual and auto) and the bazooka, phase 1 should be straight forward for you..ish.

Interesting about the champ change though, wonder why they did that

There’s no way they will change many more if any to Teq again. Maybe Jormag or Shatterer when we get to their Elder Dragon stories, bt that’s it. The devs have stated before that bosses need to be diff difficulties to cater for different skills and also be relevant to the areas they are in (ie no point over doing Maw when it’s a starter area).

WIll more new bosses like Teq and Wurm be added? Probably – Marionette showed how well they can work when done right.

Revitalize the Game World, Resetting Hearts.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

The intent of the Renown Heart system was originally to help players find event content. They also provide a decent method for us to give the player some context and awareness of what’s going on in the area. There are probably a few issues in that design which we could discuss. We could also let it suffice to say that hearts do not make the best repeatable content the game has to offer.

On the topic of keeping players engaged with open world content, I think this goal may be for more approachable from a different angle. Consider Dry Top, which has no hearts. Players on that map are participating in events all the time, largely on the premise that each event contributes to both map-level and personal-level goals. This gives me the notion that with a little help at the system level, events can and should be the bulk of repeatable open world content in Tyria.

I’d be very interested in hearing your thoughts on that.

Yes Dry Top works very well, but its small and focussed. Hopefully new maps will much bigger like the rest of the game. Also, when the need to get stuff from Dry Top dies down and we move to other areas, how will it affect dry top and the tiers? Will there be enough people to unlock all tiers?

On the flip side, Southson is a disaster, an abandoned ghost town. It needs something like hearts to make it part of the world. Right now, there is precisely no reason to lead new players to it in any logical sense. It has no story or perceivable lore if you went there at the time of season 1. WHich is a shame, because I love that map and the work put into it by the designers.

I agree events should be the bulk content (and less rigidly timed compared to Dry Top), but hearts add lore and also enhance a region. I think the only issue I ever had with them was that they finished too quickly – after all spending more time exploring and playing the world is not going to be a bad thing

Tootsie is one of the best events around. An excellent fight which teaches timing and the use of cc. I wouldn’t like to see it changed. Colocal I also like. You will feel punished by it, but also, avoiding death is relatively easy if you pay attention or use the right skills (not something I achieve often, but at least I know it’s my fault when I die).

Dust Monster. Yeah…I never see this fight finish. I hate this whole timer obsession the game picked up post Guild Bounties. It serves little purpose but to frustrate players sometimes (it really has to change in Guild Bounties, but thats another debate). Finishing this mob off in 10 mins when it goes invulnerable most of the fight whilst adds are up makes it too long.

Giant. Love the fight, but you need 10+ mins for him. The rewards aren’t worth people’s time by a very long way. Like most legendary bosses, he should have an improved loot table. Exclsuives, higher rate of ascended etc. Karka Queen is quicker to kill than him and with all the events going on around him, it’s more rewarding to do those and ignore him. Improving the rewards, adjusting his health, adjusting the timing of other events around him, making him spawn less often are sugegstions I would put on the table.

Most of the events have great mechanics, but timers are a problem in places. I will never be convinced they are required (for that matter why does Giant vanish into thin air when sandstorm goes…surely he’s even easier to spot???). If keeping timers is essential, then look at whether the right timers are in place Vs health. Giant and Dust Monster clearly are skewed atm.

Hope that makes sense, last post before I fall asleep so didn’t proof read

Mr. Whiteside, I have a question.

Do you remember the Commander CDI 1 year ago? Why we got only 3 more colors out of it? I love the idea of CDI, but after this I wonder if the community’s time and effort are wasted…

Or maybe the big improvements to the commander system are yet to come?

Do you?

The main things that came out of that CDI was different colors for tags and account-bound tags.

Both which we are getting now.

Wrong. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/wuv/wuv/Collaborative-Development-Commander-System/page/14

Commander Visibility
More options for the Color/Shape of the tag itself. This could be tied to functionality or rank of commanders but mainly targeted around organization.
Removal of buff display to enemies. As well as we should avoid doing skills/abilities that highlight the commander to enemies.
Ability to limit visibility to a sub group, party, guild, ect..
Tag sizing. (I debate this a bit as when you auto size the tag you can often lose the ability to see how far away something is but it was brought up a lot so listing it here)
Add squads to LFG system.

Commander Tools
More detailed supply info that’s always up. (Increased radius)
Ability to create sub roles within a squad.
Current squad tools are rarely used.
Seems to be some debates on buffs to followers, but there is a lot of good examples of ways to do that.
Squad size needs to be increased.
Ability to group up parties or other commanders to form different squad organization.
Improved chat suppression for commanders
Commander announcements (yellow text across the screen)
Open/Closing Squad tools

Commander gating
Current 100g gate isn’t the cleanest gate. (Whole goal behind a gate is to limit the number of commanders out there.
Gating using WvW abilities seems to have some debate to it, but seems like something we should avoid.
Account bound commander tags vs character bound.

This wasn’t even half of the suggestions in that thread either. The fact that Anet paid it’s WvW team (if there is one anymore) for 8+ months to add different colors to Commander Tags and make them Account-Bound is baffling. Yes, i know, they also worked on EotM, and Golem Mastery, and Siege Disabler, but EotM came out in February 2014. That’s 7 months for Golem Mastery and Siege Disabler?

So yes, i agree with Chris Whiteside, and it’s not worth the frustration when player’s suggestions are ignored. And yes, they were ignored and weren’t implemented.

Hi Nexxe,

My advice to you then would be to not get involved in the next round of CDIs.

Chris

Well that pretty much sums up Anet doesn’t it lol.

What that folks who don’t see value in something are probably better of not partaking in it?

I think that’s a pretty reasonable statement isn’t it that applies to many things. here is an example I don’t like getting involved in political discussions but I don’t berate or judge folks for doing so.

Kudos for your attempt at sharp wit though (-:

Chris

I kind of agree with Chris here. I’m not the biggest fan of the CDI presentation so try to avoid much participation with them. That said, if the devs find them useful, if the community finds them useful, then my opinion towards them is moot if they lead to meaningful changes to content.

Even myself, with my sceptical attitude to the CDI structure, can still visibly see ideas coming through from them into the game. Anyone who can’t, either didn’t read them at all or willfully chooses to ignore any positive developments to further harbour their own case/agenda.
