Queens Gauntlet feedback

I’m not usually a fan of these sort of elite challenges, but I have to say I’m impressed how well they pulled it off considering balancing it for their combat system must be a pain. It was nice having to think about about my build too (and not, like in GW1 have to spend hours going through millions of skills to find a good set). For me, it put the simplified skill system in a better light and shows promise for making future bosses.

The bugs are annoying though – I don’t think I can add anymore to what has already been mentioned here.

I’m in two minds over the instancing though. I like having the viewing platform and watching skilled players at work. I think putting it in a different area away from the zerg below would have been much better.

The zerging in the pavilion below really needed a way of having less people. I’ve had massive skill lags, stuck loading screens, characters stuck in limbo unable to be played. For those of us w/o the highest end connections and PCs, we’ve been locked out of peak time play.

Other than, I’ve been enjoying the content. I had a great view in Queensdale on a hill, overlooking a balloon with an aetherblade ship rising in the background. THAT was cool and finally gave that “living world” feel this concept has lacked in open world.

Oh, and gauntlet has filled my swear jar real quick

Thought this was a suggestion forum.. so I was merely mentioning my concerns and disappointment. Hoping that others that feel the same way I do will speak up. Maybe the game creators will listen and improve the game.

Your point is understood, but GW2 was deliberately designed this way and one of the reasons it has attracted such a large number of people to it. There are a few people like minded to yourself who want a tiered endgame, but that philosophy was not what was ever intended here and. The devs want people to get the highest tier armor and weapons with min effort so people dont feel like they are excluded or grinding.

For me – fantastic. More gameplay time and less hassle worrying about where my next stats are going to come from

I dread bringing my ele in there..

Depending which pirate you kill, depends which buffs the others get. eg Captain goes down, others get big evades. Healer goes down, others get regen. I think Gunner gives the other a nasty dps buff?

I was told Captain – First Mate – Healer _ Gunner. I failed every time. In the end, I changed the order to suit what skills and build I was running and I obliterated them. I think I went Gunner, First Mate, Cap, Healer. Maybe try a diff combo that works for you

I also brought a skill pet (mist wolf) for extra dps and stacked conditions like vulnerability for speed killing.

And bring a swear jar. You will raise so much for charity!!!

Whilst the time was given in the patch notes, you are right, I expected some sort of mail or herald or in game message (like when a build is incoming) or even all 3. It takes away some of the immersion in such a roleplaying based scenario to locate the info outside of the game.

Also, I’m surprised the candidates are still canvassing for votes and tokens still drop. The post-rp immersion has been lost here. I expected a cutscene, a bit of story, some celebration in LA maybe. No change at all. I thought this was “Living Story”..

I enjoy the hearts, some zones would be incredibly barren and unfulfilling to explore if the hearts didn’t exist. Some are quite fun and are over far too quick (although I tend to keep going after completion, it’s somehow not quite the same)

Complaint threads about monthlies on the first 5 pages of the forums = 0.

You were saying?

That really doesn’t prove anything, nor backs up your point on dailys?

My monthly is finished. I spent maybe 20 hours. I could not play the rest of the month and still I have the rewards. By the same logic, why should I get the same rewards as someone who spends all month?

Some people work towards it as a blitz, some take a while and do it whilst they play. It is not possible to quantify who deserves a reward by time gating as everyone uses the time differently.

You totally just destroyed your own point while proving mine with your last sentence. Thank you.

There are things you can do in that 3.5 hours that you can’t do in 7 half hour sessions. There are things you can do in those 7 half hour sessions that you can’t do in one 3.5 hour session.

The rewards are different between the two. You’re looking at only the daily rewards, and not taking into account what else you can do with that 3.5 hours.

Oh, I’m sorry, were we not talking about dailies? Of course I’m only looking at the daily rewards, that’s what this discussion is about.

Dailies - the bane of modern games

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

I have not seen a single good answer to the question “Why should 30 minutes a day for 7 days be rewarded more than 3.5 hours a day for one day?”

I’ve seen people questioning the definition of “reward”. I’ve seen people insulting each other’s motivation for playing. I’ve seen people creating false dichotomies between dailies and a game ruled by hardcore players. I’ve seen people saying dailies are better than nothing. I’ve seen all that, but not a single post that can explain why two people who spend the exact same amount of time in-game are rewarded differently, simply because of when they play.

The sheer number of variables in that are so impossible for a games maker to make it any other way. Its an impossible question to answer and equally impossible to solve.

What is endgame supposed to be?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

It’s not supposed to look like anything, which is kind of the idea with GW. To be honest it’s a fairly outdated definition or concept about what max level players do once they hit level cap and what they do next to achieve gear etc. This game doesn’t have that – it opens the game out a lot more, which I find a good thing. Plenty of MMO’s have what is a considered traditional endgame content and when I yearn for that type of play, I go play them.

Your paragraph about having fun and setting goals is much closer to the what I believe Anet had in mind when they deisgned the game.

Dailies - the bane of modern games

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

Dailies are an excellent addition to mmo’s in my opinion – they allow players, particularly casually minded players, to obtain items at a pace more suited to their needs without any form of grind whatsoever (there is no grind in the current dailys at all, not even slightly).

Dailys like the GW2 ones work because the reward you with things which you don’t need to progress. The argument of laurels for ascended is moot since ascended provides virtually nil advantage in open world play.

Forcing is the wrong word. Encouraging is a better one. MMO’s need people logging in. No matter how strong the content can be, MMO’s need little gimmicks like these to keep people logging in to their game – that’s why they exist and why they work so well

There is no endgame in the sense you know of. The entire game is endgame – level 80 just means you have more map freedom and things are easier to kill. I mostly play one character (and since headstart) and I get on OK I’d say

The only advice is to forget any comparisons to other mmos. GW2 does its own thing and gets on with it. For better or worse, GW2 is experimenting new ideas. Some work exceptionally well, some don’t.

Oh and don’t rush level. You can suddenly find the maps outlevelling you early on. Take your time, explore. Much more fun that way.

What makes Gw2 a great MMO

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

It’s just nice to see an mmo with devs putting in so much hard work. Whether the decisions that get made or the content we get are wise or correct is a different matter. They aren’t resting on their laurels as much as other MMO’s (5-6 years for new content in one I play and it turns a decent profit!) and clearly put a considerable amount of time and work into their game. I don’t like this 2 week schedule, but I imagine it isn’t easy to produce work to a timescale.

I like the fluidity of combat
I like the “do what I want, when I want”,
I like the lack of gating brought by downscaling,
I like that money is meaningless outside of cosmetics,
I like the sheer range of cosmetics in such a short space of time (more than most achieve in a lifetime..)
I like the fact that builds aren’t so complicated, I can break for the game and pick right up on return
I like the potential on the horizon for Elona, Cantha and Elder Dragon content.

However, that last is also my biggest concern. When/whether we will get them and how they will be presented is probably the biggest thing for me. The Living and Personal Story have been let downs for me, but I remain hopeful that the epic stuff will be spot on as the years go by.

[Legendary] Reputation Discusion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I think part of the issue remains the word “legendary”. I think if they changed that, most of the forum qualms would go away. They are after all, just pretty (subjectively) skins that require a lot of grind or money. I have zero issue with them at all.

ALso, the forums represent a very, very small number of the community (as has been said by the devs previously). Many people in game, whether you agree or not, are genuinely impressed by by people with legendaries. That simply doesn’t translate to players posting on the forum

I think they mentioned something about wanting the players feel like their votes matter and will not be developing the losing fractal in an interview somewhere.

Player’s who don’t pay attention to the main site or forums likely don’t even know about the new Fractal, which I wouldn’t be surprised if more than half the players have no idea about the fractals. So for all they know the only thing coming out of the vote is someone winning an election.

I think this is likely very true, although I suspect those people probably have no vested interest in which fractal anyway, as they either dont do fractals or are happy with any new content they are given

Correct. It was stated very clearly on the Living World forum somewhere. It’s one chance only – they will not be making the losing fractal (which is the right thing to do considering – it would devalue the whole concept to do otherwise)

It feels worse because the reward system was so unnecessarily dire at the start of the game. However, only in explored zones. Orr was an unknown to the pact, so hearts wouldn’t have made sense. Crystal Desert probably the same, but I ssupect some few bastions of people still exist far shiverpeaks and maguuma waste for some heart style questing

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

They are linked only by lore. GW1 is an excellent game, but very different from GW2. That’s not a bad thing mind you. GW1 also works very well as a solo player experience – 99% of pve is soloable making the lowered population irrelevant.

It still has the dire storytelling this game has, but it has a certain charm of its own.

Well worth playing and has some very challenging content in places. It does feel a tad clunky after GW2 though, just be warned!

Randulf.7614

So, in summary, you could say that Guild Wars 2 does fine on those patch days, but lacks enough players to be a successful mmo on other days.

The game sold 3 million in the West – the smallest market for an MMO. It hasn;t released in Asia fully yet. Even though a large chunk wont be playing anymore (people try and leave, its the way of all mmos), I don’t understand why people don;t think this is successful just because it isn;t living up to their own expectations. I’m fully aware of GW2 failings and the poorness of Living Story so far, but I can also easily see how successfull this game has been so far and with so much more potential yet to come.

LOTRO is dying and is putting everything into Helms Deep. Whena company sends out surveys and questionnaires to email addresses asking “what’s wrong”,..thats when you know a company is worried.

Anarchy Online. Maybe 10,000 players? Maybe half that? Still Funcoms most successful game and biggest cash cow. 12 years on, virtually no content updates, no sign of dying on the horizon

Eve. As stated – critically acclaimed. Probably the most well known MMO after Wow currently active. Playerbase small in comparison to many

GW2 is not dying. It needs improvements in a lot of places, but still successful. As for Facebook? I don’t use it, so wont give it a thumbs up. 1 million was quite a stretch target I feel..

I never said it was dying. I said that the game probably didn’t have the amount of players Anet would like to have, so they implemented the 2 week content system.

And again, I didn’t say it wasn’t successful in general. Please, read what I post. I said it was successful only on patch days and the rest of the days were not. That’s why Anet brought in the achievement point rewards system. To get more people playing every day instead of just patch days. But, guess what happened? Nobody cared enough about the rewards to play every single day, and they’re still playing only on patch days.

I did read what you wrote and saw nothing that justifies it failing outisde of patch days. I’m seeing (anecdotal evidence granted) more people playing than 6 months back outside of patch days. I agree Living STory/2 week patches haven’t been fantastic, but it could be argued we are a minority given the large number of players playing and not posting here.

I said it lacks enough players to be successful on other days. I did not say it fails. I did not say it’s dying. I did not say it will die.

When I say “lacks enough players to be successful”, I mean that, outside of patch days, there aren’t enough players you see running around. They’re all in Spvp and in WvW because that’s pretty much the only end game there is. When it’s not a patch day, I see maybe one person in my 10 hours of playing and running around in random maps. They’re all idling in LA or doing Spvp/WvW.

I’m sorry, but that doesn’t make any sense. It isn’t successful on days outside of patch day, but it isn’t failing? That’s just a contradicting itself

Patch days will always have a boost, but I’m certainly not seeing a shortage on our mid pop server (GH) outside of this. All temples run regulalrly, all metas have big crowds, all mini games are full, wvw is often queued, mid level zones have lots of ppl running around. Sounds like a server issue you are experiencing rather than a game issue. That’s an entirely different problem

Also, the 2 week system is part of their “vision”. whether we agree or not, this living story was something they wanted to introduce early on (as evidenced by the Karka travesty). All I see is company with a large maount of revenue and thus gave them reason to increase the number of teams working on it, rather than as a result of lowered numbers of players
