Mesmer Elite Spec Axe?

Oh, I thought I replied here before now.
Anyway, I always prefer the idea of new main hand weapons to new offhand or two handed weapons because it allows us to play around with all the current offhands in new ways. I’ve never got on well with scepter skills on mesmer so I’d be hoping mainhand axe would pair well with mainhand sword to replace scepter in an offhand-heavy build. If getting offhand axes as well that’d be amazing, though I wouldn’t dare set my hopes that high haha!

Sigil Proposals

Rashagar.8349

I’m a little disappointed that so many of them are “on swap” procs. This being from the point of view of someone who really liked “on swap” procs. I understand if this is you attempting to create a baseline power level and you intend for options to be expanded upon later, but still a little disappointing. That said (I may include another post later with the random suggestions I was going to post after reading the other thread) my thoughts on these current suggestions are that they do seem relatively equal in power/desirability. I especially like the Sigil of Escape (hoping that it can be designed to proc before Sigil of Cleansing?). The sigil I’d probably see myself using least of that list is Stagnation, just because the extra second of snare wouldn’t be as valuable to me as the better quality of snare (although maybe with condi duration investment that would change). Mourning the loss of raw healing and life steal, but since the raw damage options have gone away it makes sense.

Nobody wants to come out and play on it so if you are red it’s going to be a long losing week.

I don’t know who voted for this but it was a really bad idea.

I roam on it nightly. Some of us actually love it, and we often find fights that are interesting due to the land layout.

Please don’t assume everyone thinks like you.

Problem is, it doesn’t appear that many think like you do. I don’t think Anet is in business to appease a minority of people. If these numbers are accurate, they would be well-served, if they even care about WvW, to dump the DBL. People might protest, but you would be in the minority, it seems.

I think everyone who is fine with DBL is just sick of replying to the constant whining tbh.

And while you say “problem is..” it isn’t actually a problem.

Sub Par Traits

in Revenant

Posted by: Rashagar.8349

Rashagar.8349

So what are the traits that you would never pick, is it a question of numbers balance or functionality that would need to change, and what functionalities would you like to see added to trait lines?

For me, while I really like the idea of Replenishing Despair and what it’s trying to do, I don’t think I’d notice it’s effects in it’s current iteration. Which seems to be a problem with a lot of the “heal on x” revenant traits for me (Steadfast Rejuvenation, Invigorating Flow).

I’d like more sources/higher uptime of retaliation to be added to Retribution/Jalis, and/or the icd removed from Empowering Vengeance.

I’d like some sort of Glint-less access to swiftness that doesn’t involve standing in place blasting a field or running around during a fight to pick up staff orbs. Even just a passive 25% speed buff. One place it might make sense to have either of these is in Salvation (centaur and all), and it’d be nice to have more reason to take the trait line outside of Ventari too. Thing is I like what the orb trait is trying to do even though I’d never use it (and I mostly use staff). Maybe a group heal+swiftness on legend swap instead? Or a passive 25% speed added to the toughness based on healing minor trait?

I still really like the playing with energy threshold traits from Invocation just as a general concept, but I’m still hoping that Equilibrium will get some kind of healing boost to make it vaguely comparable with the damage option.

Anyway, what would your trait tweaks/changes be?

Necromancers Deathly Chill needs to go

Rashagar.8349

Right, stepping away from all the ego posturing for a second: how does Deathly Chill now (with it’s 3 bleed for 5s) compare to it when the trait changed Chill into a unique damage source (before it applied any kind of bleed)?

It stacks intensity now rather than duration then so that’s a big difference obviously, but just curious what the damage of say 1sec of original deathly chill tick would equal in terms of number of bleed stacks needed to get the same damage from 1sec of bleed ticks, if anyone knows?

I calculated it for you 1 sec of chill with the condition damage of 1800 used to tick for 661 (with 2200 armour) damage, now 3 stack of bleed for 1 second does 390 regardless of the armour.

And after this if u say okey but its 270 lower then the original version, i present yuo the real problem atm in wvw, you ususally ran into 16+ stacks of bleed no kiding 16+, this can be applied to seconds, 16 stacks = 2080 per tick i would say it is “fair” 2080 but then lets just say it happens u meet with 2 necros then RIP in peace bro guaratated 40 stacks of bleed thats 5200/second without other condis…. 2 seconds to a zerker thief, 3 seconds to a maraude, 4 seconds to my full minstrel ele, and then comes epidemic, and this is why all the QQ about epidemic atm, reapers applying so much bleed they dont even realize it……

I’m not making a judgment call either way. I just wondered what it looked like in a different frame of reference. As I said, I know it stacks intensity and not duration.

As far as i remember chill ticked for ~800dps after the firstbalance attempt .. which should be like 6-7 bleed stacks.

Thanks, just asking because this change looks to be trying to reintroduce some of the condi burst potential lost in that original change. Which, while this may well be an overtuned attempt at doing, that overtuning might be in current Deathly Chill’s bleed duration rather than in stack number.

Interesting anyway, thanks!

I have a lot of emotional attachment to Spectral Walk, or as I took to calling it, Spectral Retry.
Firstly, it was the only reason I ever completed a large amount of the jumping puzzles and some of the vistas in the game. I got used to moving forward in 8 second bursts of frantic panic followed by 30whatever seconds of wiping my palms and remembering to breathe.
Secondly, it used to be the most fun I ever had in wvw. Cliffs were the only allies I needed as a necromancer there haha!
God I forgot how much I miss that, just running around with my friends and no matter what the situation we found ourselves in just feeling like “well I don’t know about you but I’m okay because I’m a necromancer”.

Check out the raid subforum. I posted the suggestion and it caused a right upheaval.

I don’t usually have a reason to ghost that subforum but this I have to see, thank you!

As for this thread, my god the ego is strong in this one.
There are actually too many swelled heads to crack here. So the best approach is to ignore them.

As for the OP, the bit that worries me most is this.

However, the community kind of turned me off and I had shelved my Necro.

My advice to the OP: if the thought of a cloth wearing greatsword wielder is enough for you to enjoy the class, then don’t let the community turn you off it. Metas come and go, and in the end they’re pretty much irrelevant and used almost exclusively as excuses. If you enjoy it, play it. If someone tries telling you you “shouldn’t be playing it”, find better people.

For raids, the point about theoretical dps max vs actual achieved dps is a sound one. For wvw there are usually far more variables in play when estimating build performance so you may as well just work at getting the most out of the build you enjoy playing.

Matchup Threads

in WvW

Posted by: Rashagar.8349

Rashagar.8349

Before the ban, each match someone would start a thread with the three worlds’ names in the title and players from all three would come on and jibe at each other. It could get out of hand – surprise surprise – so it got stopped. That’s a “matchup thread”.

What seems to be happening these days is that whenever anyone uses named worlds to illustrate a point or compares what happens on one world to what happens on another, or refers to specific things that have or might happen in a specific match, those threads are likely to be closed. Basically, mentioning the names of more than one world in the same thread seems to risk getting that thread closed as a “matchup”.

It does make it very difficult to use examples to make a point and it no longer seems to have much to do with the problem the ban was originally intended to prevent.

Heh for some reason it doesn’t surprise me that the reason is because the community were acting like children so now they get treated like children.

Rashagar.8349

General thoughts:

The first place to start when deciding on a build for yourself is just what weapons you enjoy the most. Some weapons complement each other more than others though (outlined well by Sister Saxifrage above)
Since you’ve said longbow (and your listed stats so far are sentinel and berserker) I’ll just assume a power build for now.

Utility skills are easily swappable, so experimenting with what you enjoy is a good idea here too.
Some general thoughts:
Storm Spirit’s active skill and Glyph of Equality are good AoE power damage/defensive options against groups of mobs (mobs don’t attack you while they’re dazed)
Trap skills, Glyph of Alignment and Sun Spirit are good AoE condi damage options.
Signet of Stone, Protect Me and Guard are good pure defensive options.
Search and Rescue and the Spirit skills are good group support options during meta events.

As far as traits/specialisations go, a simple way of doing this is by looking for the trait that supports the weapon you prefer, and starting by picking it.
So for longbow, this would mean Marksmanship, taking Lead the Wind as the 3rd trait.
The most fun first trait in this line is probably Clarion Bond.
The second trait can vary depending on the rest of your build, but generally if mostly using longbow and letting your pet tank, Steady Focus. If using some signets as your utility skills, Brutish Seals. If using greatsword as your second weapon (or having a lot of dazes available), Moment of Clarity.

For open world pve, I do love taking the druid specialisation for the permanent swiftness available from Natural Stride as the second trait. It’s just a fantastic quality of life bonus.
The first and third traits depend on the rest of your build again.

This leaves you with one other trait line to swap around and experiment with a bit.
One way of picking which one is by picking the line that contains the utility skill type you use the most.
Assuming the above is fine with you, I’d probably go with either:
Nature Magic, goes well with druid, helps the group support role in world metaevents, and can improve Spirit utilities.
(For example, Allies Aid, Windborne Notes, and any of the third traits depending)
or
Beastmastery, helps make your pets better, and can improve Shout utilities and greatsword.

Lastly I just wanted to check if you had looked into getting ascended trinkets yet?
Just asking because they offer a nice increase in stats over exotic trinkets.
If you haven’t, a good place to start is by completing the Heart of Thorns story achievements for some power damage amulets as rewards.
Living Story season 2 achievements offers condi damage stat trinkets as rewards, alternatively.
A fun ascended backpack to go for if you have none yet is Mawdrey.

See attached, obviously the “25” cap isn’t working. If 31 bleed stacks are being applied on one epidemic.

There fear and chill come with the epi. Chill =3 bleed, fear =chill = 3 bleed.
25 + 3 + 3=31
Idk, maybe.

No down player can hold that amount of condi. The ele either stay close to lord, sieges or someone abuse resistance to tank condi. Maybe they epi from ranger’s pet.

The number one counter to condi: Pain Absorption (0 cooldown, purely energy based), just so happens to make the revenant a GREAT target for epidemic. So no, it isn’t just lords and siege that make great condi pylons.

But there’s an easy way to fix epidemic, make it only share the condis applied by the necro casting epidemic. This keeps epidemic’s identity, puts more effort on the casting necro to make sure that epidemic hurts, and prevents others from abusing your condis too hard.

“Fix” in the sense of a vet and a dog, you mean? =P

As long as it’s not feminine looking…i.e. flowers dropping, or looks like a cauliflower (scepter)… I’ll be good with whatever. I wish every legendary could look as good as Nevermore.

Hope, Astra, nevermore are so good…The ones after that don’t really impress me… The rifle doesn’t look like a legendary, it looks like something you can buy from a gemstone… Imo, legendary weapon should look legendary.

What’s the problem with feminine looking legendaries? There should be something for everyone.

I’d actually quite like a troll legendary weapon to go with the quaggan one. Or maybe a grawl one instead. =P

As far as current legendaries go, there are a lot I like well enough (though not enough to put the effort/money in to getting them) and a fair amount I’d never bother with.

Future legendaries I’d like to see, I’m sure Anet can think of better things than me and I’d only use them if they fit my characters’ themes but, if they found a way to make the “I just ripped this out of a legendary creature’s body and use it to batter the kitten out of other things now” kind of Monster Hunter style weapon look suitably legendary enough as a skin I’d be all over that in a heartbeat (until then I’ve got the godskull weapons, “Kevin” which always makes me laugh, and a handful of other similar skins to enjoy that theme with).

I wish I’d been aware that this change was coming. Obviously if they gave us a heads up somewhere, I missed it, which sucks even more. However, these changes make the ascended shards on my alt account entirely useless, and now I regret even taking the time to work on that account.

I remember how I felt when they changed the recipes for Halloween weapon skins etc between year 1 and year 2, putting them forever outside my realistic price range (or so it felt at the time anyway, I had been sitting on the recipes and was roughly another holiday’s playtime worth of ingredients short of having enough to make them when they removed the recipes a couple of weeks before Halloween2 and reintroduced them something like 500 times more expensive out of nowhere, or so it felt). So I can empathise. I’m wondering if some kind of in-game public service announcement from forum goers might be a thing we should start up in situations like these if Anet doesn’t, but unfortunately even then some people would be bound to be missed, and I’d say there’s some for whom this’d be a source of schadenfreude.

So I’ve been getting a lot better at jumping puzzles compared with how I was when starting the game. I managed to do the wintersday one a good few times in the half hour windows it gives you etc (impressive for me) so I was feeling really chuffed with myself and my improving skill. Until I decided to try, can’t remember names right now but the ice cave one in dredgehaunt cliffs behind the scaffolding one when it came up as a daily recently, and I swear to god I was hours there. The final icy slope at the end in particular, was just me getting half way up it and then sliding all the way to the bottom repeatedly for so long. There was this one particular moment where I was standing at the first jump at the slope bit, psyching myself up for it, when a player above me came sliding down to the place I was standing, and my brain went “kitten, jump now to get out of their way!” so there was just this slow motion moment when I was in the air mid-jump and could see the portal appear on the place I had been standing that the friendly mesmer had slid down to give me and irl I could hear myself just shouting “nnnooooooooooo”.

And of course I tried turning around to go back, missed, and slid all the way to the bottom again.

Alacrity fixes nothing

in Revenant

Posted by: Rashagar.8349

Rashagar.8349

I personally think it will become very relevant in wvw. Ventari has some very high healing now, with healing power actually scaling and with modifiers I was able to pump out 8k heals with just over 1200 healing power from a single skill. On top of that the on demand light field will do wonders for culling the condi meta in wvw. The alacrity will be useful for helping cds come up in large groups.

Outside of that I feel like its wishful thinking that they made ventari good enough. It lacks the amount of group support both mesmer and ranger provide to bump them out of either of their spots in pve. In pvp ventari will still be way to susceptible to cc burst for the changes to be meaningful in that context as well and with the changes to ele, how study druid and guard are I cannot see ventari rev attempting to contest for the support role.

Yeah I’m excited for it in wvw. The cheaper tablet move, better healing scaling and changes to light fields had me more excited than the alacrity tbh. Though that is probably due to me constantly forgetting what alacrity even does these days haha!

Just saying cos 18 points every 8 minutes would get you rightfully laughed out of the science lab, with much talks of spherical chickens in vacuums, if you were to suggest it as unbiased data.

I know but someone was asking about experienced raiders who can clean 3 of the wings for the 150 Magnetite Shards to compare it with pvp/fractal clear time.
So I took a very experienced pvp player who is at Legendary who can very well get 18 pips every 8 minutes (of game time).
Now if you are to include queues then I guess we can also count the average “queue” time to find a Raid group to do your runs (it’s nothing like pvp queue time)
And if you want to actually include that 20 rank farm, you’d need to include the time and effort required to reach a level that allows someone to Raid (it takes a rather long time btw)

I gave data based on what was said earlier, there was nothing about what an average player can do (Silver is average in PVP), it’s good not to take comments out of context in a discussion.

I followed the whole discussion, and felt that your comments were too much “trying to prove a point” and not enough objectivity in the data, that’s all.

Your comments here about raid “queue” times and “time spent getting to a raidable position” smack of it too. What’s funny is that the point would still be made quite acceptably if you were using realistic figures and undistorted arguments.

Edit, to clarify, you call my post out for “taking your comments out of context” when what I’m trying to do is highlight one particularly egregious argument distortion where you equate an “experienced raid player” (realistically, someone who’s played it a few times and is now familiar with the mechanics) and compare to a fictitious scenario of a “pvp player in legendary division who never loses”. You’re making a false equivalency between experienced and skilled. And you really didn’t need to try equate it to an absurdity to validate your point.

No matter what game I’m in, the characters that I never get bored of are the ones that are somehow related to the themes of nature or death.

So the characters I split most of my time between in this game are my necromancer, my ranger and now my revenant. I love how the ranger can easily be the loner survivalist type or the mystic, or anywhere in between, and isn’t just a “ranged weapon person”. I love how the necromancer feels to play (what’s funny is I chose to play him as a chill – based power specced Norn devotee of Raven since launch haha! It’s like they made the reaper spec specifically with my character in mind!). And revenant’s theme is just perfect, it was the only way I could have been interested in playing a human in this game and now I love her.

The other character I’ve spent most time on is my warrior. In the original guild wars the only way I could be interested in warrior was by making her part necromancer. Now my warrior is themed around a nightmare courtier sylvari to keep her interesting, and I really enjoy her.

To add some realistic numbers to the spvp time investment, it took me ~85 matches to max out the ascended shards, with a slightly higher than 50/50 win/loss ratio in silver (started in bronze3, ended in silver3). (Not including having to grind my way up the first 20 ranks to unlock it, which took a good while but is only a one time time investment.) Probably averaged 4 games an hour (between breaks, matchmaking queue times and a good proportion of close matches).

Things like those born under the cycle of noon tend to be inquisitive and adventurous or something along those lines (probably not accurate but that sort of idea)

That makes no sense. In one sentence you say players didn’t mainly do it, but in the next you say that’s what most were doing. So if your point was there, it wasn’t valid.

The incentive to win was speeding up the process. 10 ticks for a win + 1 for stats.

Didn’t mainly afk in a corner to get the free items. That doesn’t mean they didn’t hurt their team in other ways and in any way never actually participated in player versus player activity.

And “speeding up” is no incentive at all. You have more than enough time during a pvp season to get a nearly full set without winning a single game. Not to mention: there is a cap. The better you play, the faster you reach the cap.

As a bonus: it’s faster to get that nearly full ascended set, than getting an exotic set from the dungeon pvp tracks. That’s how pathetic that reward system was and I don’t understand how people can defend it.

Speeding up the process is a huge incentive for anyone who is playing through a game mode they dislike for the sake of something shiny at the end.

I had a paragraph written on the “hurting their team” part but decided I wasn’t in the mood. Short version, we had different experiences to each other, and I doubt the objectivity of your’s.

lol I don’t even have a full set of ascended armor on any character I have and ive been playing since the start.

That’s just not possible unless you only farm queensdale and RP in Divinities reach.

It’s obviously possible.

Grant only mentions currency from PvP and Fractals. What about WvW?

There was some verbiage about expansion into other modes in the future. Likely an off suggestion that “its possible but I’m not going to get raked over the coals by the community if it doesn’t happen”.

If WvW isn’t included there will be a huge outcry from that community given the neglect over other rewards. Given that they are revamping the system it would be a huge mistake to not include all modes in the revamp, take a little more time to do it if thats requried.

WvW players crying on forums, ya that’s new…

Before spvp season 5 the easiest way to get ascended weapons and armor was WvW. All you have to do is play the mode and occasionally an ascended weapon or armor box will drop. It allows you to pick the weapon/armor piece with core stat of choice. Zero crafting involved. If you want to use HoT stats you can buy the crafting recipe and runes and sigils you just buy them from the provisioner. It really cannot get more carebear then that.

The droprates are rng and abysmal, WvW players also need a lot more ascended sets than just zerker+viper of each type. Do WvW til you have 2 ascended chests, please, then tell me how long it took and if that seems reasonable.

I have 5 full ascended characters…
and am looking to start a 6th because I have an ascended armor box rusting in storage.

How many of those ascended pieces were gotten in WvW?

For 5 characters I figure I have 45 pieces of ascended gear that matter (both weapon slots 2handed, 1handed & offhands and 6 pieces of armor x 5). I’d approximate I crafted 25 pieces, know I’ve bought 5 from spvp, gotten 1 leg box from fractals and so rest are wvw, 14. I am rank ~2000.

Then you’re without a doubt the luckiest person I know, I’ve gotten 1 box from WvW so far (rank 600 zerging is boring). Either way RNG is terrible

Yeah but if it’s not a problem for them specifically then it can’t be a problem for anyone, right? =P

Tbh I’m hoping for like a minimum of 98% of forum suggestions to be ignored

they are ignoring forum suggestions?

now thats one reason of taking this game down

Well that depends entirely on the suggestions =P

Looking forward to (and dreading in equal measure) seeing what changes might be coming. Thanks for the heads up, that seems a lot sooner than I was expecting. I’m liking the “new” release schedule in practice, it seems like interesting stuff is happening at a very steady (and surprisingly frequent) pace now.

Should zerk gear be used by casual players?

This zerk meta crap just has to die one day or the other.

If someone is getting killed too much, especially in the open world, they can use a more durable profession, or they can try playing mostly with ranged weapons. As I pointed out earlier in this thread, an Elementalist in Marauder or Valkyrie gear will still be one shot killed by an attack that can down a Warrior using Berserker gear. So your profession plays a very important role in choosing your gear.

I’d much rather choose more durable stats for my chosen preferred profession than change profession just so I could play *some*thing with berserker stats.

I get the point you’re making here but still, it needed to be said in case anyone extrapolated the wrong thing from your text heh. =)

Ok, so apologies in advance if none of this helps, it’s difficult to gauge the level to advise at sometimes.

Swapping to shortbow after your bonfire could help the disengage from melee with the 3 skill, and the 5 skill to keep the mob in your aoes for longer while you disengage. (2skill for spreading more poison to the group, or before you disengage with 3 if there’s only one enemy).

If you have beast mastery equipped the pet taunt grandmaster trait can be great for keeping mobs in your aoes (and not focused on you) too. You could couple it with for example murellow for more aoe poison and a tanky pet.

There are a good few things to help if you overaggro often for whatever reason. Signet of stone can help you last another 6 seconds even in the direst of circumstances which means an extra 6 ticks of all your high damage condis. Protection and weakness are available through various means to lower the physical damage you take, a blast finisher in your poison field (from marksmanship for example, or if you swap your shortbow for sword/warhorn, or from druid celestial form), the nature magic grandmaster trait, protect me shout, one of the beastmastery traits also makes your pet apply weakness. Dazes also work especially well against mobs (essentially functioning as stuns) so storm spirit’s active skill, the dazing glyph, one of the skills in celestial avatar form if you’re taking druid, shortbow5 can all help keep the mobs in your aoes and not attacking you longer while your condis tick.

That’s just some things you could try off the top of my head, let me know if it wasn’t the right level of advice to give.

Your opinion on GW2 after HoT (2017)

To balance out Doam’s comment, most people who frequent the forums have something to complain about or are currently bored of actually playing the game and will use a thread title like this as an excuse to gripe =P

My play patterns follow a very extreme pattern of weeks or months of this being the only game I play, followed by months of barely if at all logging in. So while I stopped playing soon after HoT released it was less to do with the release itself and more to do with the fact that I burned myself out playing nothing else for the months of hype leading up to it. I’ve played on and off since then, mostly coming back for the festivals I like and then staying around for some amount of time afterwards to progress the story/my characters before my endurance runs out completely.

Things I like post-HoT:
Gliding around old maps is amazing.
The specialisation system and mastery progression is great (and likely to only improve).
I really liked the HoT story (maybe because I didn’t rush through it but it actually felt quite well paced to me) and the LS3 story is excellent.
I love the LS3 maps and how they intersect with all the old zones.
There’s so much to spend your time doing in-game (HoT zone meta events, the old world bosses and silverwastes, daily activities in LS3 maps, raids and fractal dailies, pvp or wvw reward tracks, map participation rewards letting you farm specific materials if that’s what you like rather than just gold), and ways to get the same rewards via your preferred game modes (eg. the HoT zones’ armour/weapon skins via pvp or wvw reward tracks), meaning that for me (usually splitting my time between pve and wvw) I can change from one method to the other whenever the one gets boring or feels too grindy.

Things I don’t like post-HoT: (keeping in mind that I can feel myself rapidly approaching my burnout point)
The actual HoT maps are a lot less of a joy to run through than the old ones.
The amount of stuff that it feels like you need a group for, in the new maps, (all events feel like part of metaevents, hero points are designed with groups in mind, even wvw roaming people seem to do in packs now rather than solo) means that I can only spend time in the old maps (or now the LS3 maps) during my less sociable moods.
