A lot of the ranger hate is due to two reasons, the pet and how easily the class can carry a bad player.

Rangers by themselves are actually below the normal for damage, that’s because they have a pet to make up for the missing share of it. However, pets are pretty effing stupid. They stand there and take damage that a player would avoid, they’re slow to respond to commands, and they can be a bit unpredictable. This all results in the pet getting the player into trouble, or dying and leaving them under-powered. This can be a special problem in dungeons, where tactics and control are valued.

The second problem is that the class can be very easy to play out in the open world. So easy, that many players developed bad habits playing it. I mean, they may be good habits for staying alive as a ranger, but they don’t mesh well with how team mechanics and buffs work in GW2. Standing away from the team prevents the sharing of buffs, and the use (abuse?) of knockback arrow is the bane of anyone trying to melee a target. (It’s worth noting that rangers are not the only ones that do this, they’re just the ones most people think of.)

Ranger IS a good class, even if the stupidity of the pet limits it at times. Don’t be afraid to play it. The fact that you’re going into melee with it suggests that you’ve avoided the bad habits of the class anyway.

I was going to offer some kind words about how Ranger/Hunter characters tend to draw hate in every MMO, but..

This guy sums up the most egregious issues all at once.

Thanks for the numerical analysis. I’m hardly committed to raising T5 wood and metal, just a sort of “that’d be nice” thing because I farm quite a bit. :P

The silk/leather split is irritating, and it bears a somewhat easy solution. Decrease the need for Damask and increase use for Elonian Leather. Even if it’s just giving Leatherworking and Tailoring the option to use Elonian Leather to make insignias, that would help ease things out by a lot. Armorsmithing wouldn’t quite get the benefit, but it doesn’t use leather so.. eh.
Leather would get a better sink, silk prices come down respectably, and Tailoring costs moderate significantly.

So... Banner Traits?

in Warrior

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

This is something that has bugged me a lot too. They should just merge the banner cooldown reduction and banner range increase into the Discipline trait for banners. This would still do what ANet wants because most PvE Warriors don’t take the Discipline specialization, and in order to trait banners they’d have to give up Phalanx Strength. That’s a very fair trade if you ask me.

Phalanx is listed under Tactics (GM), so there’s not a conflict, except for possibly having to take the Discipline trait line over Tactics.

Considering Inspiring Banners takes up a Master slot, the Regen is merely okay. It needs something else for the trouble. So, time to farm some ideas!

As I noted above, cooldowns need a base adjustment. The previous trait allowed for near-100% uptime (6 second gap), and the devs weren’t keen on that. The 30-second gap we have now weakens banner to the point where you either run two of them or don’t use them at all. A 75-second effect and 90-second cooldown would balance uptime and downtime.

If the goal is to have Banners be the “healing” support option, have them pulse a weak heal along with the Regen: 50+1% Healing Power (or 150+3% HealPow per 3-sec interval). That would make it a huge boost for warrior as a support/healer.

To be more attack oriented, Banners pulse 1 stack of Might with the Regen.

Have the trait modify the skills the banner has. Reduce the cooldowns of carried banner skills by 20%. While carrying a Banner, Banner skills have additional effects:
Banner #1 (Stab) hits harder and grants Quickness (1 sec).
Banner #2 has increased effects (longer boons/conditions, higher damage/heals).
Banner #3 (Inspire) grants super speed (1 sec).
Banner #4 removes movement-impairing effects when cast.
Banner #5 does AoE damage (like the old Powerful Banners, range 600) in addition to its blast finisher.

I’m sure you folks can think of more.

So healing power...

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Anet really opened up a can of worms introducing a pure healer spec like Druid. Now they are going to be forced to address healing power coefficients so that it actually starts to make sense but you can’t address it for Druid alone since its a stat that affects all professions.

I think it’s a can that needed to be opened though.

Indeed. Support-minded players need more than a lame 15-20% conversion on a stat like that. Because of Druid, we’re going to see an uptick in threads on healing power.

I’m actually hoping they’ll be some grand merge, a giant globby ball of healing power discussion, so ANet finally addresses it. The players have had some good ideas, but small threads aren’t going to get noticed. :\

How’s winning by attrition skill?

When your raid design is littered with OHKOs and other do-or-fail mechanics, succeeding at those mechanics for a longer period of time is, actually, skill based.

The issue with removing the timer is how can you incorporate a way for players to fail?

If Atari era game designers can figure this out…

Progressive difficulty. I described it above, using the trendy term “soft enrage” as an example. The penalty for failing a mechanic is a harder fight. Fail enough times, and then it’s Game Over.

Having a timer for no good reason? Lame. And by “good reason,” I mean making the mechanics fit the narrative.

Current raid:
/watchtap
8 minutes up, everyone die, lolol

Good raid:
The raid begins at “daybreak”. The players have until “night” to invade the fortress and defeat the leaders. Should they fail, Mordremoth’s minions flood the fortress, closing in on the players and hunting them relentlessly. Can the Pact finish the mission before the fort is overrun? How can they fight off waves of minions and the powerful leaders? Be swift, for nightfall means certain failure.

Point is, I’m not saying get rid of timed battles, but give those timers legitimate meaning. If the players can fight the war of attrition that long, they deserve to win.

Increasing the amount of other required materials is what I would do. I’m sure that will please everyone, not.

If only to make things equal and lift the value of mithril, elder wood, and leather.

Granted, I’m keen on the suggestion I’ve heard to replace one or more bolts of Damask with Elonian Leather in the armor formulas. Raises leather value, drops the heavy leaning on silk for those poor Tailoring folks.

A similar idea would be to make it so insignias could be made out of other materials. So instead of cloth mats they could be made out of metal or leather materials. There really aren’t any good reasons to not have everything more consistent.

That was the other idea I remember hearing. I knew it was something like that.

Timer is likely there because they don’t want you to win simply by attrition.

People have often applauded Queen’s Gauntlet (e,g, Liadri) for being great challenges. And yet, they had timers.

Actually, I wasn’t fond of the drop-and-die timer. I obviously don’t speak for everyone, and I still agree the Queen’s Gauntlet was probably the best test of skill the game has seen. Not the best it could have been, as it favored (as usual) running Zerk to beat the clock and defense didn’t matter because of excessive damage kills.

/shrug
But that’s still what I expect out of ANet’s lazyish combat design. Run zerk/sinister because defensive stats don’t matter. OHKOs and meatwalls of HP. At least the OHKOs are getting more interesting with the jump rope. :P

Drop-dead timers are a sign of bad design. ie, we should have expected ANet to use it.
#grr

We’re better off with a soft enrage mechanic, common to WoW/Diablo 3. The longer the fight goes on, the harder it is: attacks do more damage, effect radii get wider, more adds spawn more frequently.

That sort of design lends itself to groups that can better play the war of attrition. If healing and defense keep up, they can succeed, but it becomes more difficult to maintain. High damage groups will coast through most of the fight, relying on prevention tools before the enemy’s damage gets too severe. It serves both play styles.

I’d far rather see this sort of boss design than a hard timer.

I’d rather see something original, rather than a timer. Really? Is that the best they could come up with?

Soft enrage is merely one way, but there needs to be a way for the players to lose a war of attrition. Progressively harder/less healable fight, the object the players are protecting gets destroyed for not being adequately protected, …something. Otherwise, as described above, they all roll Nomad and healface their way through it all.

The Charr and the other 'cute' races.

I think there are relatively strong correlations where a regular player starting the game for the first time tries to pick a race and class that they most associate with or is the “easiest” to comprehend. This would usually be a human as a warrior-type class. It’s almost unavoidable, unless you literally don’t have humans or the warrior archetype in your game; the first is relatively easy (though uncommon) and the second is near impossible.

You, sir and/or madam, have hit on a very intriguing idea for science! Would that I could make this experimental, humanless MMO.

Anet: 'How they think and operate'

As it comes to ascended materials, some of that is actually an “economic” decision. The materials need some kind of value outside of Ascended gear. Some people can farm it up faster than they can use it, or they already have all their ascended sets and have no further use for the materials. Reducing the drop rate may wouldn’t halt the effect of inactive materials sinks.
So, they made material sinks. The number is limited per day, but it does a good job at chipping away stacks without adding much to the economy. (Because loot RNG lol)

As for RNG… Yeah, it’s bunk. Garbage. This is, unfortunately, also an economic decision to give artificial value to ‘rare’ items in game. Luck used to be on gear, but it was changed to be an account-wide attribute. (Fantastic decision.)
Problem is, they started hiding all the loot in containers, which are unaffected by Magic Find. So Magic Find is a falsehood. Basically, they gave us Magic Find, then they took it away, so they could continue to be stingy and play market baron.

And I hope they bring back SAB. Not for me, but to share the love with all the players who could enjoy it.

I might consider supporting it if Fishing ended up in PvP and WvW.
Instead of running the Orb in one map, players pull up Golden Fish and make them as offerings to the Tengu. When appeased, the Tengu will fire arrow volleys at the enemy team.
Or pull up Mistborn Fish in WvW and offer them up to the nearby tribes. Coffers full, they storm off and attack the nearest enemy territory.

There’s almost no need for an actual timer (including open world bosses, if I’m honest) in fight design. Unless there’s a bomb. Which would be hilarious.
Not to detract from the conversation at hand, but I’m musing on a boss fight now. :P

Actors: PCs, Boss, HUGE BOMB.
As the PCs fight the Boss, the Huge Bomb slowly loses life. They have to direct the boss away from the bomb, or it shortens the time available for the fight. Boss does suitably bossish things like cleaves, area effects, and such.
When the bomb explodes, it does enough damage to kill all the players, but also damages the boss by 50% of its current health and stuns it for 10 seconds. A well-timed Aegis and other invulnerability skills can prevent a party wipe.
But I digress.

Healing Power problems

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

This is a topic we’re going to see more often, now that Druid is a thing and other roles/gearing will be expected for raids.

The consensus is pretty clear that Healing Power needs something to make it work taking up attribute space that could otherwise be used for damage. Out of the several threads I’ve seen, two ideas come up pretty consistently:

1. Abolish Healing Power and roll recovery bonuses into Vitality.
If Healing Power is going to scale for garbage anyway, buff Vitality (the second weakest stat) by basing healing strength on Vitality. Remove Healing Power as a stat.
It’s a solution that would hurt to implement, considering the implications on gear (Cleric, Nomad, even Giver to a degree). Healing Power would have to be filled by another attribute, but with the current other sets, replacing it with another defensive stat overlaps (Cleric -> Soldier) or is just impossible (Nomad).
Bunker play in PvP would hit a peak in some corner cases, as the Toughness/Vitality gear would suddenly gain unexpected offensive power to fill in the gaps.

2. Change Healing Power to modify incoming and outgoing healing.
Right now, Healing Power modifies outgoing healing. A way to make healing power significantly more powerful is to have it improve outgoing healing as well. Self heals scale more sharply. A character rated for sucking up damage can gain benefit from his allies’ heals as well as his own.
Execution: Get rid of differential scaling in this approach. +1% per 100 HealPow. That means self-heals yield +2% per 100. Simple.
Obvious implications in PvP, still, but actual base heals can be tweaked based on cooldown rates.

3. Add Boon Duration to Healing Power.
This is a way to give Healing Power potency via lateral growth. Even 1% per 100 would do wonders to restore some of the boon durations that were cleaved entirely in some classes (…warrior) and potentially gives Healing Power a helpful offensive component by extending Might and Fury for allies.

  • It doesn’t prevent people from knowing which map I’m on
  • It doesn’t prevent people from being assigned to my team in PvP

Sounds pretty useless to me.

It also isn’t linkable from people spamming chat with /emotes. If they’re nowhere nearby, you can’t target them to block them.

Block list is also limited in number. I could easily have a thousand people on my block list (I have high standards, shush), but instead, I have to routinely clean my block list manually. One at a time. If that person was banned, I’d never know, they’d just be offline forever, cluttering up my list.

Druid is not the answer for healing.

in Ranger

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Until healing power gets bumped, Druid or any other class will only be theories.

With the shoddy Healing Power ratios, we can expect Druid’s constant healing to use less than 10% of the invested Healing Power. Regular healing skills (Slot 6) offer 15-22%, thereabouts. Regeneration uses 12.5%

It generally equates to a sparse few hundred HP difference (3 digits) when the HP pools themselves are 11-30k (5 digits), and the base healing is exceeds the Healing Power contribution by a factor of 10.

Basically, full cleric’s gear gives maybe a 20% boost in overall output. Maybe.
Compared to investing in any of the Zerk stats, and damage capacity spikes significantly more.

But, the actual new zone, f* no. It’s Dry kittening Top all over again, except green and muddy instead of sepia toned. I’m hoping the mobility masteries make it tolerable. The mobs need some work. Rauderi.8706

I had this concern as well, Throfin. If there’s a focus on healing, then Healing Power needs to step up somehow. It’s been discussed in other threads before, and there’s some good ideas that came of it.

Perhaps most notable and applicable to raids are:

  • Healing Power contributes more to outgoing healing, but not to self-healing. Either as a percentage (1% per 100) or by making sure other-healing skills and regen applications have a higher coefficient.
  • Healing Power contributes to incoming healing, not just self-heals. This allows for more ‘tanky’ characters and rewards the party for bringing that little bit of extra healing power, even if they’re relying on a heal-spec’d character.
  • Healing Power adds to boon duration. A repeatedly favorite idea. It gives Healing Power dual applications in offense and defense by extending all boons, from Might and Fury to Protection and Regen. It would mean adjusting Giver’s, but no one uses that anyway.

I like Hearts. They’re an innovative take on the standard MMO questing system. They’re not as much fun as Dynamic Events or the Personal Story, of course, but they have a certain zen to them. If you want something easy and chill to do, you can go grind out a few hearts and feel like you’re accomplishing something.

I’m glad Anet didn’t include them in end-game zones, but they were a good addition to everywhere else.

I appreciate that the hearts lead you to Dynamic Events. …assuming they trigger or have anything to do with the rep quest. I don’t care for the hearts that are “use this gimmick item and…” or the ones that are placed really awkwardly on the map.

To stay relevant, the OP’s idea would be grand. I, too, have had to wait or be waited on while questing in a group. It’s not so fun. PS: WildStar was a bundle of good ideas poorly executed. Been there, done that, bored "before it got good." :P

Echo the above, for the most part.

I find the occasional racial skill can be useful, but by no means required. My keepaway thief adds Shrapnel Mine to his kitten nal, since the actual thief traps are kind of garbage (though I’m learning to love Ambush~). And the class elites aren’t so hot half the time either, so sometimes I’ll slot a racial.

The downside to the flexibility is that the racials don’t have tags to synergize. They don’t get trait benefits for reduced cooldowns or increased effects. So, like some of the above said, don’t pick a race based on racial skills.

Keeping in line with the theme, On My Mark should add a boon that synergizes with a group call-out. Namely, Quickness. Even 1 or 2 seconds could be very useful, especially since world fights are way too easy to get 25 vulnerability on.

Fear Me ought to have something for after the fear is done. Weakness, probably. It’s an anti-pressure skill for when a warrior gets in too deep.

Meanwhile, yes please on taunts. It’s the most fitting for a warrior or guardian, so there should be something.

So... Banner Traits?

in Warrior

If the radius nerf on Soothing Mist was any indication, I suspect the Banner radius nerf comes from a design desire to force players into tighter groups. I wish the trait would restore some of the old banner function for that, like 900 range.

The regen is nice, and I’ve used it for a long time, but on its own, banners are kind of pale, especially since regen stacks don’t compound very well. I’d actually accept the change more if it pulsed direct healing instead of, or in addition to, the regeneration.

But the biggest stick in the craw is the cooldown problem. I get the not-100% uptime angle (though I feel it’s very kewkew on the developers’ part). I’ll even grant the “drag it with you between encounters,” as that’s the reason banners are useful, but the best way to handle it was not to leave a gaping 30-second wound in our support efforts.

So, 75% uptime. Reasonable-ish. So drop the cooldown to 90 seconds and effective time to 75 seconds. (Technically, that’s 83% uptime, but..) That leaves a kinder 15-second gap in between and still provides over a minute of utility.

What 3 Specializations your most hyped for?

In no particular order:
Chronomancer
Herald
Reaper (I may actually be excited, for the first time ever, to play Necro)

Midline:
Scrapper: Curious. My opinion may go up this weekend.
Daredevil: Opinion goes up if they fixed the clunky dodgeroll and leaps~

As for the others, not:
Dargonhurrdurr – Muddled and ineffective
Berserker – Roving fire field is nice, but it mostly left me unimpressed as a damage spec
Druid – Until Healing Power gets fixed, a healing spec isn’t going to be effective
Tempest – It was cute, but I wasn’t feeling unique or powerful with it.

I am not a huge fan of the use of Ascended Crafting materials in the Precursor crafting and them not having any Ascended wepaon qualities until the further work to be done to make them legendaries. Especially if we are going to be in a fairly high double digits of amounts needed. Ascended Crafting mats are obnoxiously time gated, and expensive.

I would nto mind the ascended mats IF the timegates were removed.

Can anyone give me some reason for the timegates in the first place? It makes no sense to me, and just seems like they wanted some trivial reason to make ascended items take longer to craft. Just throw a timegate in!

( Sad but true: ) Time gates are there to preserve the market. I know, it’s a refrain I’m tired of hearing as well, but I get the reason.

If the time gates were removed, people who buy missing materials off the market. Demand goes up. Silk would suffer from this the most, since those with the most money could ignore the cost, buy up all the silk on the market and either sell it back as Damask for inflated profit or remove it entirely by making Ascended gear.

Limiting to once/day keeps the prices from rising too sharply.

People bringing up the term “grind” in relation to Precursor Crafting is losing track of what a grind actually is. Doing SW Chest farms for 15 hours a day is a grind. Killing every single Karka in Southsun is a grind. Traveling to remote locations once to satisfy a prerequisite is a Quest.

You’re missing the note on (paraphrased) “preserve the value of precursors” as a goal, and forcing players to spend money to earn the components. Granted, if it’s just a matter of Ascended materials being involved, ingots and planks aren’t terribly pricey, just time-limited. But as it stands, ANet is clearly wanting to avoid the kewkew of the miniscule number of people concerned with the named-exotic market.

Phalanx armor removed, such stuff is damaging

That is just a fanboy joke, right?

You buy your products when you need them. If someone finds a nice mix and one of the skins is a gemstore one, he will buy it, if not, not.

Fanboys have nothing to do with it. Creating an illusion of scarcity works as a business model. Anet isn’t the only business to do it; it’s a common tactic. When people see that an item is going off of the gemstore/going away, they’re more likely to panic buy.

I wouldn’t waste wisdom and logic on someone who tosses around ‘fanboy’ as a counter-argument. :P

But yes, Rose has it spot on. Didn’t buy them when they “might have been cool,” got told they’re going, and now it’s time to pitch a fit. What’s more, there’s no answer your belligerent request is going to have as satisfactory, so the entire thread is a waste.

Armor skins go in and out of style, but “please” and “thank you” never do.

I’ll take it from the response that you’re a veteran player who had plenty of time to snag them, then.

/shrug

Granted, I’m vaguely inclined to agree, as ANet isn’t selling a physical product, so there’s no reason to pull them off the digital shelves (except for a hideous UI that can’t search worth a crap).

But, as the case proves/supports, if they don’t threaten to remove them, people won’t buy them in a timely manner, or at all. And there was a good week’s worth of notice. Dunno what else to say about that.

Getting a precursor from the TP is fast, easy and expensive. As an alternative to that I would have expected crafting them to be somewhat challenging, and for it to take a while, but cost pretty much nothing – keep in mind crafting the legendary itself already takes a crapton of gold so there is no need to double charge on the precursor too.

Like if this system is to be useful it should be an alternative to the grind, not grind+.

Yeah, I found that facet really irritating when I read the run-down. Deliberately making the process expensive “to preserve the value of precursors,” as if they weren’t based solely on artificial scarcity, like every other special exotic? (Try finishing the Karma Converter with just gold…)
I don’t mind the random tasks, or the occasional gold sink of a few gold and materials here and there, but the obviously market-driven decision still grates pretty hard.

SAB trailer/commercial is the best thing ever made. So everything else is invalid and GW2 wins from that alone.

I’m laughing, not because of any truth or deception of the statement, but because that commercial was kittening hilarious.

I hear you. Ranger is one of my main toons and I play a LB on her much of the time. I see other LB Rangers spamming #4 as soon as it’s off CD and I don’t really understand it. Although to be fair, I see a lot of GS Mesmers spamming #5 for no clear reason. Rangers aren’t the only one…

Flamethrower engineer. By the remnants of the tank-blasted gods, when I’m greatswording, inevitably some Engi gets skittish about an evil minion getting within range 600 and feels I’m not supposed to be hitting things anymore.
GRR. >_<

You wonder why your character is doing all sorts of crazy things and not responding to your commands when you realize your hand is mis-placed to the left or right by one key.

No, never did that… ~whistles innocently and nonchalantly~

Not quite what happens to me in GW2, but it happens all the time when I swap between games with QWER and 1234 activation controls. (Namely, HotS and Diablo 3):

Heh, most of the nerf-whining wouldn’t matter if not for PvP. One too many “get rekt m8” messages, though, and all the sudden, 1v1 balance in a game that orients around 5-man teams is supposed to matter.

Then again, I’m still salty over warrior banner specs getting heavily nerfed and somehow expecting shouts to make up the difference. (I want my cooldowns back, dangit.) >_>
