Short answer: No.

Long Answer: This won’t work due to the way server communities in general operate. There’s no incentive to move down to a quiet server because that server will lack activity. Activity breeds more activity and the opposite is true as well – inactivity breeds more inactivity. Unless there’s a mass scale transfer down to new worlds, it will be a failed attempt to try rebalance population.

Sure, give them burst… but blowing through all a ranger (in full ascended and infused gear) HPs in 2 seconds while I can’t use any skills to negate damage is getting a bit old. I mean come on

If they can take your hp down that quickly, you can take theirs down just as quick. Full glkittenter mesmer is so squishy, a light summer breeze will kill them.

The thing with those builds is that they don’t do damage and have very little chasing power. It’s really easy to walk away from them.

Linking is definitely worth keeping in the game. The difference though, is that links need to be readjusted more often, with periods of downtime between server links to allow for the low tier servers to readjust to their new populations after a link.

Perhaps 1 month server links with 1 month off would work better than the current quarterly setup.

I don’t think blobbing is necessarily a bad thing. It’s a good server community building method and, even if it promotes lazy and bad play out of players, it can be quite fun fighting against another blob.

Highly recommended for players to make accounts on other tiers. It’s always an eye opener to see how different tiers do things differently to yours.

Our guild runs Glint/Mallyx for zergs with Hammer/Staff. It’s essentially a buff bot. Wanderer’s gear is good, but anything that’ll allow you to stay relatively tanky is also good. Just provide your frontline with fury and resistance and that’s your job done. Even better if you can land some good CoRs.

BG came out of hibergate mode and will probably go back into it soon enough.

Depends. Our opposition will have to bring some pretty good guilds to wipe/farm our pugs for that to happen – over a long period of time too. The current hype on BG is quite real, as well as the ET link server bandwagon. I bet if linked servers end this week, ET could rival T3 or T4 servers in coverage now.

In its current state, from what I’ve seen, TC is barely more active than YB when YB fell.

This is why population is so hard to balance. Frustratingly annoying fairweathers make it hard to gauge actual population.

I’m gonna be blunt. I don’t really care how WvW is scored. What I want out of any scoring and reward system is for incentives for players to come out and fight at all hours of the day. If it disincentivises players from my time zone to play, then I’m basically going to leave GW2 because no fights = no enjoyment = no point playing the game.

We just had a whole bunch of people come back to the game due to recent stability change and alpine map rotation. Don’t take backward steps ANet.

Sadly had the “alliance” transferred back to YB instead of TC, T1 would have been a fight rather than a lopsided horde running over everything.

TC has way more natural coverage (ie. people not doing overtime) than YB. They also actually provide fights rather than turtle up with 10 ACs waiting for you to go away to continue backcapping.

Going to be interesting to see what happens to the BG blob during offpeak times. Will they get frustrated at their steamrolling not contributing to PPT? Time will tell I guess.

We’re not here for PPT. All our OCX and SEA guilds are here for fights, with PPT as a by-product of us being heavily stacked in comparison to our current competition. Sometimes the only way we get some fights is to hit objectives over and over again, also resulting in high PPT.

I see it on EU servers with large NA populations fairly often, the most standout being Desolation and Seafarer’s Rest. It just so rarely happens on NA though

I disagree. The current system works quite well. A well coordinated gank group can easily pick off many in a larger zerg, which my guild (running 7 people) was doing to TF (around 25-30 with pugs) just last night. We would pull someone who didn’t have stability up out of position, down and spike them as quickly as possible, then reposition or scatter when pushed. Granted we also had some siege cover as well, which helped, but that’s the general theory of how to play a small~ish (I’m aware 7 people is quite large for a gank group) group fighting a larger organised zerg.

There still needs to be discrepancies in power with a numbers difference or else I think the toxicity in map chat would just go through the roof, with people telling others to get off the map etc. even more than they do already

I am a SEA player. Over the last year especially since GW2 China came out, we have experienced a big drop in numbers playing WvW. Changing scoring to effectively reduce the contributions that we make on scores effectively is telling us that we are not needed in this game. I paid the same dollars as an American player did when I bought this game, I buy as much gems as the average player or maybe even more. I’m not sure if there might even be a case for suing Anet for making a scoring change to effectively favour people in other timezones in a MMO game played globally. I’m pretty sure this is tantamount to biasness towards part of your customer base who have made the loudest criss about “nightcapping”, but for your European, Asian and Australian players on NA servers, you are making it unfair to these customers of yours. So yeah, I hope Tyler you will have some serious considerations about this and refrain from making a decision that undermines a big portion of your customer base.

I do believe that the need to retain the population during times that 98% play the game exceed the need of the 2%. Offtime cappers have undermined a vast majority of the customer base for 4 years.

This scoring change will turn everything topsy turvy and I’m still not sure it will even accomplish what they say it will do.

On T1 NA servers it was more like a 40/60 split, or in the case of JQ and SoS (and even KN and IoJ back in the day before their servers imploded), their OCX and SEA population would vastly outnumber their NA population with many Australian and SEA players transferring up to kitten have something to fight and not stay on low tiers to PVD. Yes, it’s different on EU servers, which is why EU servers need a different solution to NA servers.

@josh – even post patch and then + ET? Pretty sure you had queues everywhere…..

When we got linked with ET, which was the same patch as the DBL tweaks update as well, we had some short queues on the borderlands but nothing crazy. APL has brought back a lot of people for BG. It’s actually quite enjoyable to be sitting right outside a waypoint fighting a group that’s also right outside a waypoint. Long battles and much bags to be had.

The fastest way is to get a dedicated WvW guild, get the right builds, learn how to fight, and kill players. The drop rate on BoH were buffed on player kills and more or less removed from other sources outside of dailies.

Bring Back the Desert Borderland!

Desert borderlands still need massive reworks to become playable. All 3 shrine effects need to be reworked (preferably to boost keep upgrade speeds rather than affect movement and fights). Terrain around the eastern side of the map and south west of the map needs to be reworked. The position of the keeps and towers need to be moved to make objectives more strategic. The sizes of towers and keeps need to be reduced to allow for easier scouting. The Oasis area needs to be changed to Bloodlust Ruins or similar.

In other words, Desert Borderlands needs to be reworked into the same philosophy as Alpine borderlands in order to make it playable.

I think it’s intended. That choke point up those stairs is insane to try push through, even if you have a bunch of omega golems to tank enemy zerg bombs. All you need is a good scout and a sizable group that’s willing to come defend.

Blackgate had all borderlands queued and EBG had no queue. I think it shows how many wanted Alpine back. We had 2 borderlands queued ’til like 1am EST. This is opposed to the usual 50+ EBG queue that we would get since the server links. Alpine borderlands FTW

You should do something to divide the blob as much as possible without penalize it. you simply have to add more stuff to do for them so they will have to split. Here some ideas that could help the WvW experience and divide the Zerg

Add PVE element
Boss like the sandstorm giant… that give something ( reward track bonus for 15 minute for the server, or some point but wait, don’t give it right away. Let’s say you kill a boss it drop something on the ground and you need to click it and run back to your home starting point ( No tp allowed) and Why Giant, because there is not enough in the game and they are nice to fight and can destroy a zombie blob.

More event that need people to run back to get bonus more you divide the blob.

Dynamite at border spawn point
The dynamite can be brought if (add requirement of your choice). The dynamite can explode a wall one shot, 2 shot if fully upgrade maybe… You cannot use any skill while transporting it. If you are kill with it, it explode and do enough damage to kill any ally and only ally. (no good with a lot of people to protect it) So it help to take stuff near your border spawn point but it’s really hard to go in enemy territory with it.

Return of the orb
The orb was a great idea but not how it was working, but now with the reward track it could really work. The orb should despawn every hours and give a reward track bonus for each keep that have it. People will want to defend more. When you have the orb you are like a beacon in the map. A big source of light so enemy can see you miles aways.

Be the Dolyak
You can take some upgrading supply at a camp and go to a tower, keep or castle with it. While transporting you cannot run or attack. it’s too heavy.

Add some bounty like the guild mission.
Call them traitor or spy. When you capture a traitor, he give some wvw token or he can be use to sabotage there respective keep or tower…

Escort
You can escort a npc to a tower or keep and that npc will help to defend with the keeper. Maybe it can help night capping.

The 3 heads boss
Like the wurm, you need to kill the boss in the same time but there is a head in every Keep. It only spwan in the keep and when you have the 3 keep.

The hidden Dungeon
When you have the 3 keep you have acces to a hidden small dungeon. That dungeon there is a sleeping wywern and you can kill it for loot and chest it you kill it under 20 minutes. If the map is EB it give you a secret acces under the castle so you can invade the castle from inside.

Blasting Arrow cart or arrow
that is specially designed to kill faster blob. It slow every enemy without cap and every time it touch someone it make a blast small aoe.
Ice arrow cart or arrow slow peoples and give chill on explosion. Maybe it could only be acquired with wvw mastery.

Dont’ die!
For each 15 minute you are alive you get 2% more HP and Toughness up to 10%.

Help low pop and imbalanced realm
Buff HP and toughness for realms behind in scoring by 25 000 point.it give the opportunity to the losing realm to get better at playing Wvw to and get back in the game.

Why not buffing DPS? because nobody like to be one shot by a buffed realm… It’s not fun…

Daily reward and weekly reward for participation.

All those thing could give new aspect to the WvW, creating more small skirmish fight, ganking some people trying to kill a giant or escorting, so helping to get a healthy WVW and solve some problem in the imbalance by dividing the zerg and giving the losing team a chance to come back in the game.

We don’t need more AI to fight. We need more players to fight. Those players need to be incentivised not by PvE loot, but by refining the current reward track system. The fights need to be intense and without gimmicks ruining it.

Ooh – so here it begins here..

So asking what happened to our NA and how they want easy fights and cant fight ACs and act like noobs when our SEA has no problem?

And calling out the Fact that NA just gave up – or seemed to when a ‘FULL PUSH’ was called and they lost something like 12-15K tick when the EU held it together. No-one from NA seemed to turn up – or if they did they got ROFL Stomped by the enemies as PPT would have not accounted for that big a loss. It was PPK.

Do you want me really to copy the entire shoutbox thread here – which proves people like MORB were basically trolling and being rude directly?

I’m not blaming the JQ Community – just agreeing with a few individuals how people are feeling – it proves the point time and time again.

When you try and do everything you can during your shift and turn around and NA loses everything every time, it starts to get old after a while when they refuse to address the problems even exist and do not want to allow anyone to help resolve it.

Just a couple of guilds should not have to run 24/7 outside of their shift pulling massive overtime to make up for what others were not doing. TBH, I feel bad for those right now doing exactly that because we know exactly how they feel and have been doing the same for a long time now. You just can’t keep running like that though, if you never get the help you need no matter how many times you plea for it, you have to say " when" at some point.

The fact that you guys even had people doing OT for that long was an indicator of deep and serious issues. Why do you think BG ‘hibernates’ for months at a time, pushing just enough to stay where we want to be? Doing that kind of OT is so meaningless for a game like this.

You guys should’ve just let your coverage unfold naturally but instead chosen to put in OT shifts to play for a meaningless metric. Instead of simply trying to have fun, you guys turned it into a job. Those of you who put in those hours are even more at fault for the current state of JQ since it masked the rot in JQ that’s been spreading there since mid 2013 when Waha quit the game, rather than letting it play out and fixing the problem as a community then.

What the actual kitten?

Nightcapping has been issue since day one, no time slot has more impact on determining the winner than the night slot. Adressing this issue to lessen the overwhelming impact of a few players during off-hours should’ve been done years ago.

Nightcapping is not going to be worthless, however you simply should not be the “Kingmakers” of WvW. Where all that matters is your work and everyone else is irrelevant.
Because that is the reality here that these nightbabies seem to ignore. Right now and for the past 3,5 years it has been the people playing during the day and prime time who have been made, to put it in your words “subhuman”. Because that 4k lead we etch out over the course of an evening of battle is dust in the wind compared to the 30k nightcapping wins back knocking down undefended keeps.

Depends if you’re in NA or EU. “Night capping” hasn’t been as much of an issue in NA compared to EU because NA has a greater diversity of players, except in the lower tiers before the mergers. Nowadays it shouldn’t be an issue at all except for the fairweather problem.

To be honest. JQ’s situation got worse but it wasn’t good ever. There was a lot of talk back in the days that JQ is stacked when it wasn’t.
JQ SEA was stacked and still is, NA was never able to queue all the maps on reset (on seasons maybe) and JQ EU was almost never existent, OCX population changed a lot over the years.
The whole story about “JQ is so full” can be tracked back to seasons when BG tried to recruit more players and back to a guy who transfers around the servers with his disciples of stupidity.
Today JQ lost the majority of the NA players, while EU still isn’t existing while SEA is still strong.

Were you even playing during those days? Everyone wanted to take down JQ back then because JQ’s SEA would queue 4 maps doing OT with Waha and Cloudfly from OCX all the way to EU. It makes DK and Chris from YB look tame in comparison. People kept bandwagoning to JQ for years until BG got enough to fight back, at which point JQ basically broke and lived on lifelines like TW as well as Cloudfly’s continued bullpoop

Three issues with the recent WvW update:

1. Sentries don’t give WXP on kill, but you get the WXP on cap. That way it’s less easily abused I guess, for the sentry debuff showing where you are on the map. I don’t really get it either.

2. Yeah, bit annoying, but I generally leave my chests alone until the end of a session anyway. Keeps the inventory a little less cluttered and doesn’t fill as quickly.

3. Not really. It’s fine as far as I can tell. It’s not like you get so much rewards from WvW right now that it’s actually worth the afk time. It’s better than PvP now, but still lackluster compared to PvE. I’d rather it give less participation for capturing objectives and more participation for kills. As it is right now, it gives way too much incentive for karma training for participation. Also, the 550 participation limit is a bit unfortunate right now, but any more and it would be overkill with reward track progress.

Not sure why they didn’t wait a couple of resets AFTER the patch to set the linkings. Maybe in the end, it wasn’t going to matter, but bg-TC—db saw a significant influx of players right before and after the patch. My guess is they had way more pop playing than YB or Jq.

The blowouts last week show how little linking accomplished in the end. Not sure the blowouts will end until change it’s BG-tc-db in 1 of the matches…..

BG didn’t receive an influx of guilds/players. In fact, we lost a couple of guilds to Mag/DR just recently. This is just players that’s been waiting for changes to WvW finally coming back and seeing what’s up.

ET can’t even queue a map by themselves on reset. The queues were 90% BG.

BG’s always had a large population. We were the #1 server destination for PvE players (due to first Teq kill and NA first triple headed wurm kill), competitive sPvP players (due to a larger server for lower queue times) as well as World vs World players (we got a ton of fairweathers due to having #1 ranking) before megaservers. Anyone that’s played GW2 for a couple years should know this. I don’t know why anyone is surprised

No doubt. YB’s OCX appears lacking in a major way letting BG tick big points in the middle if the night. Just like YB used to do to you.

Not a big concern for YB as it looks like Anet is going to nerf OCX scoring soon rendering those guilds irreverence.

Nope. Getting there, you’re on the right track, but still wrong. BG used to tick 200-250 during OCX anyway.

Nightcapping can be fixed with better population distribution or population balance. The merger is step 1 to fix population. To continue, we need to entice more players into WvW to get more people onto the borderlands around the clock.

Lol is the word on YB really that BG is winning because of ET? I mean we like those guys, but come on lol.

My point is that it has been a week. String a couple dozen of those together and then feel free to crow. Listening to several BG players gripe and moan about losing (yet somehow still winning) for the last few months is only slightly less annoying than the self congratulation they like to get when they win a week.

As for ET, they are not the sole reason but they are a contributing factor just like BG getting an influx of guilds before the lock down and BG having a large returning population.

Which guilds? Curious cause I know we lost a couple of guilds since the mergers but I don’t know anything about gaining guilds, other than the ones we got several months ago now (like CL)

Most of that alliance hasn’t been on YB for weeks (months) as they moved to BG and JQ a while ago. YB earned their way into T1, dominated it for weeks without any “elite” guilds and then had to listen to a handful of opponents drone on about how they weren’t really winning.

Face it, YB is Rebel Alliance and BG is the Empire.

Ok, so OnS, WHOA, fR, EK, TW, GS, eN etc. moving to YB didn’t count. Gotcha.

It’s good to see that my words were sufficient motivation to get Blackgate back in the game after your long hiatus. As someone new to the game, it’s awesome that I can have such a strong impact on a veteran group of players. You’re Welcome. Anytime you need a boost, I’m here for you.

And I can’t condone the use of crack on GW2’s official forum, but if it helps you secure the win, I’m not one to judge. Whatever gets your fingers clicking.

I’m quite happy with the result. And while I don’t speak for YB or their commanders, I can say based on the chatter in teamspeak, they are happy to have competition again.

As they say, things are sweeter after the struggle and I am confident that Yak’s Bend has the strength of character to push through this population re-balancing intact and with a positive attitude.

The current proposals for changes to the scoring system worry me. I hope that there’s no mechanic allowing a lower population server to “fight back” score-wise. It will completely defeat the purpose of rankings and glicko.

The change to stability is welcome. It could probably be reduced to 0.66sec per stack of stability, since right now it is a tad strong against hard cc, but the change has allowed for more intense melee brawls rather than two groups having a starring contest.

I’d also buff cleanses next to counter the increase of conditions since HoT, since cleanse skills weren’t really looked at in any balance patch except, if I recall correctly, Smite Condition on guardian being buffed to 2 condi removal instead of 1.

Lol. I see no problem with duelers. It’s quite fun joining their mini-game. They don’t hurt your zerg. They don’t hurt your PPT. If what they do hurts you, you must really suck as a commander.
