I had someone mention this to me last night while I was commanding; he would lose me when I pushed into the enemy zerg. Perhaps the tag size could be increased a little bit, or raise the contrast on the tags a bit. Either way, it’s been an issue since forever.

Best way to deal with it is to target your commander. Honestly, that red reticle is pretty kitten good for keeping track of where your commander is.

Just get in there and enjoy it. Hop on whatever voice comms your server uses and join a WvW focused guild to get builds and strategies. A lot of the stuff people tell you on the forums become irrelevant once you join a WvW guild as many guilds do different things in different ways.

I do have to stress the WvW focused guild part though. There are many guilds that advertise they do WvW, but it’s usually like, 2 people roaming around for a few minutes.

Does spawn camping help or hurt the game ?

The way I look at spawn camping is very contextual.

If you have volatile matchups and want to move up and, if spawn camping helps you achieve a more desirable matchup, then it’s a good thing, for both sides, since the weaker server will get a better matchup the next week.

If you’re in a stagnant matchup (T2/T1/T8 NA [ordered that way to avoid censor]), then it’s a bad thing since it just gets boring.

Ok this is extremely off topic, whatever, I have to call you out on this one. We were rather supportive of your particular efforts to get people to play PPT. The thing is though, that you were also trying to force your perspective on the way the game it should be played onto people who didn’t want to play that way. We never stopped you from playing for the win. There’s plenty of people on BG who indeed do still try to play for the win. They are supported by the rest of us when we are online because we do try nurture these players. The problems you ran into were due to your insistence on us playing PPT while not doing anything yourself.

On BG, we show what we are made of on the maps, whether we play for the points, or we play to slaughter our enemies (usually both). When rallied up, very few servers have been able to match us, even today. We’ve been purposely dialing back our play time outside of seasons (warning each other to not play too much) because we’ve seen what happens when people play too much. It leads to burnout. We’ve lost way too many good players and commanders to burnout and it’s hurt our community each time one of these players leave.

What you’re asking for is essentially people taking time off work/study to try get a win. It’s not feasible and it’s not moral. Blackgate doesn’t play to lose. We play to have fun, however we define “fun” to be.

What makes a build "strong"?

There’s little to no build flexibility when you’re trying to build your character a certain way. For example, if you’re trying to build a condition damage based Revenant, there’s only really 1 path to go down towards (Mallyx/Herald with Mace/Axe as your main weapon set). If you’re trying to build outside of these parameters, your build generally just isn’t as strong or viable as “meta” builds.

That being said, you also have to be flexible in your build depending on the situation. You may want to slot in more condi clear if your enemy team is full of reapers and scrappers, or you might want to slot in some protection boon spam (or a different amulet) if your enemy team has a couple of thieves that might be hard to deal with. In WvW, you might want to swap up your food buffs depending on who you’re up against. In PvE… um… rotate skills better? Damage has never really mattered in PvE.

A Pugs Life

I tend to avoid pugging with guilds that have a closed off feel. It doesn’t feel welcoming and it doesn’t feel fun. The attitude of some WvW vets towards pugs are also pretty disgusting. Especially from those so-called “fight” guilds.

YB currently consists of too many smaller guilds that want to do their own thing to forge a unified zerg with larger guilds. That isn’t a problem that needs to be solved at least from the perspective of many YB players. YB is doing very well and by most accounts enjoying the game quite a bit.

BG also has many micro guilds. The only difference is that they work with the rest of the server, so we end up achieving greater results. My own guild was once in this position, only it has grown now to the point where we can no longer be considered one of those micro guilds.

It’s not necessary that these guilds merge into a larger guild. All it requires is that these guilds are more willing to work together with other guilds on the server.

Unkillable Troll Build to troll enemies

I’m not sharing my build but Druid can be insane. I’ve had entire guilds/havoc teams bomb me, chase, bomb again, chase, immobilize, bomb again and I still managed to live and /laugh at them after making the great escape. It helps the time pass

My vote goes to super druids if you can find the correct build you feel comfortable with.

I also hate you for it. But yeah, that build is a bit stupid in how far it can run and stay alive against all kinds of CC

ACs, the way I see it, should be a purely defensive siege option. An anti-siege option, if you will. Similar to the way ballistas work, except with AoE, as well as having siege damage nerfed to players, but increased hard against other siege.

That way you could take out enemy siege with ACs pretty quickly as a defensive option (let’s say, 5-7k damage per tick rather than 1-1.5k on siege structures), while still forcing you to fight to defend your structure if they break in. It should not be an anti-zerg tool.

The current mindset is that a few people should be allowed to hold a structure against a larger force indefinitely without having to fight for it. I think all this does is encourage siege bunkering – something that is extremely boring to play against. We need to encourage more fighting for structures, not sieging.

There’s a thing call shield generators. As broken as they are, they are a useful anti-siege tool. You can see which server I’m on in my signature.

What I want is for siege to be useful for a few defenders to hold out, but not to hold out indefinitely. I want to force people to fight for structures, not just sit on siege. If you have better ideas, I’m all ears.

Well BG is humping the PPT this week. I suspect spring break has allowed them to maintain a very high population. Looks like when BG has players and coverage they do exactly what YB and pretty much every other server does.

Except we don’t build stifling amounts of siege (siege obviously present for defensive purposes). Nor do we port out just because a wall got breached.

Yes, every server builds siege to defend. No server is going to let an opposing server freely karma train if they can help it. There’s also very few servers that also actively avoids risky fights like YB in general does (several recent transfers not withstanding). Nor are there that many servers that actively avoids the fights to go to another map to PPT like YB (again, in general) does.

This week isn’t BG going “PPT tryhard”. It’s because we’ve been always more active over the weekends and, with the reset time reverted back to Friday, allowed us to push for a bigger lead from reset, benefiting us a lot in terms of activity (which correlates with PPT).

We’ve said that even when we were winning PPT. Your point is rather irrelevant. PPT isn’t a function of skill or server organisation and until it is, winning means nothing.

BG seems dead because there’s no action, which causes people to log out, cause we’d rather do anything else other than karma training (I tag up for fights, fights end, half my group logs off). Groups from YB and JQ are just karma training empty borderlands thinking they’re hot stuff, complaining about us zerging them down with 10-15 man groups calling them “blobs”, all the while bunkering in keep lords rooms with siege.

If you want BG to play again, bring us fights without siege. Most of us won’t even care if we’re vastly outnumbered.

Why don’t you explain to me how PPT works? I’m always open to learning something new. What is my data missing that is so important? Server politics?

PPT isn’t a function (right now) of organisation and skill, but rather, of time and numbers. The more numbers you have on at any given time means that you’ll naturally get more PPT.

If you log in at any time outside of NA prime on BG you’ll notice this. Our small groups are backcapping as fast as they can, but due to lack of numbers, our PPT suffers. We lack numbers because people aren’t willing to put the time into WvW right now due to the lack of incentives to win and the lack of rewards while playing.

But then, I don’t think anyone on BG ever saw you put more hours in-game to help out our weaker time slots.

Maybe if Blackgate didn’t have such a sour attitude towards pugs and pve players they would have MORE people to put in those hours and there would be no grind. But alas, Blackgate is a “skilled fight” server and have chased away all those no skill pvd players.

Your inability to get the coverage speaks volumes about your server culture.

I don’t see us as pug un-friendly at all. In fact, when our commanders tag up, outside of reset raids and closed raids, most of the channels on ts3 are filled with a smorgasbord of players from all sorts of guilds, time zones and play styles.

The fact that you don’t notice this is very telling.

The only thing I kind of regret is that BG pugs/militia are very dependant on commanders tagging up to come out and play.

Lack of instant stab, pushing power, ranged AoE.

Scrappers got lots of instant stab and options for ranged AoE.

I dont know what you mean with “pushing power”.

Pushing power is basically the ability to absorb damage while dealing forward damage, which is basically exclusive to guardians and warriors right now, though condi reaper can probs pull it off as well.

BG and JQ are relatively even. BG has a stronger NA than JQ, JQ is stronger than BG during SEA. Both servers are non-existent during EU prime. I’ve never played oceanic so I can’t speak for that.

With most of Dawn seemingly leaving for BDO, JQ oceanic is probably the strongest except for when a certain commander decides to play for 3-4 days straight.

Depends if either I or KnM tags up though, except both of our guilds prefer just camping EBG.

1. Complete nerf of siege damage onto players
2. Removal of barriers towards fights (such as the perma contest on waypoints)
3. Removal of crappy terrain that makes it hard to find other players to fight
4. Introducing more end-game rewards for playing WvW (especially for ascended and legendary item crafting)
5. A rethink on the server system, perhaps by merging servers.

@Vayne: I lead a 100man roster guild based in Australia. We have no issues PvPing or WvWing. In fact, those are our core activities – we don’t do any PvE related activity (raid, dungeons or otherwise) as a guild. You’re using ping as an excuse and that’s just sad.

Our progression is our observation of our skills growing and our teamwork getting better. We don’t need an arbitrary number in a game to show that we’re progressing.

How We Got Here (Long)

Basically what I’m reading here is that you don’t want to play “MMORPGs”, but rather, “co-op/multiplayer RPGs”. MMORPGs have evolved past the “RPG” element towards a social experience. There’s no “role play” left in MMOs because “role play” (the way you want it to be done) can’t be done with a massive community – there’s too much disconnect between different players in expectations and time commitments.

In the past, when MMOs were smaller, role playing was indeed a main focus. I’m thinking back to late 90s/early 2000s Runescape, where the concept of instances and dungeons didn’t exist and many people simply played to make their character reflect them as a person (whether it was combat focused or a complete pacifist). In other words, role playing.

MMOs now don’t have that because they aren’t, if we’re going into semantics, RPGs. They’re more or less an interactive social network, pioneered by the likes of “Second Life”, “IMVU” and such. When we put time into these games, we expect adequate compensation equivalent to the time we put in. Whether we’re a PvP player or a dungeon raider, we expect that our time get adequately compensated.

I don’t disagree with your premise, but I strongly disagree with the way you talk down to people who want more out of this game for the way they want to play it.

How does 10 man make something more of an MMO than 5 man? This is an unreal statement to me.

Playing in a more organized instanced content isn’t what makes an MMO an MMO. Lobby games can be like that. What makes an MMO an MMO is a persistent world where you play with other players. For all intents and purposes, dynamic events better define the MMO concept than raids. What I’m hearing in a lot of these posts is people locked into an arbitrary definition of what an MMO is because of what an MMO has been. I find that the saddest part of this whole thing.

Anet really did want to do something different and a fan base that simple couldn’t adapt to it changed the plan in my opinion. That’s why we’re stuck with stuff like ascended gear and why raids have finally made it here. Because Anet couldn’t change the genre as much as they expected they would be able to. Fair enough I suppose. They have to make the games for players.

But saying I want a coop game because I don’t want to raid? Raiding is NOT what defines an MMO. Raiding has virtually always been an MMO sideshow for a small percentage of the playerbase. We know from many devs over the years that most MMO players don’t raid, so saying I don’t want an MMO because I don’t want to raid is simply not on.

As usual, you completely miss the point of the post.

My point is that you want to play RPGs. MMOs are no longer RPGs in the sense that they are more about the interactive social experiences between players moreso than the virtual roleplay aspect built from MUDs and D&D style games that older MMOs were founded on.

No where in my post did I say anything that raiding made an MMO. I also disagree with that concept because I don’t give two cahoots about it, considering I’m a PvP player.

Basically what I’m reading here is that you don’t want to play “MMORPGs”, but rather, “co-op/multiplayer RPGs”. MMORPGs have evolved past the “RPG” element towards a social experience. There’s no “role play” left in MMOs because “role play” (the way you want it to be done) can’t be done with a massive community – there’s too much disconnect between different players in expectations and time commitments.

In the past, when MMOs were smaller, role playing was indeed a main focus. I’m thinking back to late 90s/early 2000s Runescape, where the concept of instances and dungeons didn’t exist and many people simply played to make their character reflect them as a person (whether it was combat focused or a complete pacifist). In other words, role playing.

MMOs now don’t have that because they aren’t, if we’re going into semantics, RPGs. They’re more or less an interactive social network, pioneered by the likes of “Second Life”, “IMVU” and such. When we put time into these games, we expect adequate compensation equivalent to the time we put in. Whether we’re a PvP player or a dungeon raider, we expect that our time get adequately compensated.

I don’t disagree with your premise, but I strongly disagree with the way you talk down to people who want more out of this game for the way they want to play it.

15 gyro scrappers would permastealth, permadaze, permasuperspeed, permastab, permaheal better than warrior passive, permareflect 360 degrees, permaprotection, a permawaterfield that moves with them, pulls every second and they would also look kitten if all where Asurans.

But nooo… kittenty dragunhunter (charr with backpacks of course) and human reapers (for teh boobies) is the norm.

You can’t pull something like this off because as soon as one person gets picked off, the rest of your group starts to fall apart. A more diverse group is able to cover for weaknesses better, which is why you never saw all guardian zergs, despite how OP they used to be.

At this point, I’d rather get 2v1’d again to get action on the maps. BG seems dead because there’s no action, which causes people to log out, cause we’d rather do anything else other than karma training (I tag up for fights, fights end, half my group logs off). Groups from YB and JQ are just karma training empty borderlands thinking they’re hot stuff, complaining about us zerging them down with 10-15 man groups calling them “blobs”, all the while bunkering in keep lords rooms with siege.

Good joke.

If you want BG to play again, bring us fights without siege. Most of us won’t even care if we’re vastly outnumbered.

@Torqued: You seem bitter that BG won’t respond to your requests to push PPT. Guess what buddy, we’re not here to play for you. We’re here to play for us. If you want to play PPT, tag up and do it. Don’t expect someone else, who has no desire to want to play for PPT, to play that way.

This is a bad idea and you should feel bad

If anything, scoring needs to happen on a shorter interval to reduce the effects of backcapping.

Edit: Scoring from structures also needs to be nerfed hard while points from kills buffed, at the same time nullifying any points potentially gained if a person was hit by siege damage within a certain amount of time, encouraging players to come out and fight for their points.

An hour of node farming in PvE will net you from 3x up to 5x the amount of gold and mats earned in WvW in the same amount of time. There’s just no comparison.

Granted WvW is also a lot more fun than node farming….

The only things I would call “Grind” in GW2 is:

1. Guild Hall upgrades (the 50k~ elder wood logs and mithril ore required for upgrades is ridiculous)
and
2. Crafting

Everything else you’re thinking of is referred to as “farming”. Not “grinding”.
