High level is the top 10-20% of active PvP. These are the players who drive the meta because lower tier players will copy their strats.
Edit: This example is not reality.
Take for example a low tier player (bad) who complains because he (a thief) cannot ever beat a necro. On the flip side a high tier thief can beat a necro 70-80% of the time. The problem arises when the devs balance to the desire of the low tier player. Balancing to this thief equals a nerf to necros, which is clearly the wrong thing to do when viewing the matchup at another tier as the high tier thief will go from 70%-80% win rate to 90%-100% win rate.
Since high tier play is the driving force behind the games pvp health, poor balance for that tier can destroy a game quickly.

You will regret picking ranger.
Word for word this.
I want to quit the game because of my class now.

You play ele. I can be beat ele vs condi ranger now, so other condi rangers should also be beatable as I feel I have a very good grasp on condi ranger.
Before the patch I’d say you couldn’t, but now the matchup is in favor of the ele.
Tips:
Dont use water dodge/attune/water 5 at the same time as that opens you up to a burst with no condi clear up.
Cycle water → earth (2) → out of melee – to prevent someone bursting condis before your clear (water) is up again.
Lightning flash out of entangle and save cleansing fire for a condi burst that hits you that you can’t quickly clear.
Note sotf/empathic bond/healspring and cycle into fire 2 when the ranger has no clear/limited high CD clear up.
If you dodge without being able to justify why you deserve the loss.
Facetank condis when you have water up. Don’t waste a dodge when you could clear the resulting condis instantly anyway. Save that dodge for a time when your clear is on a 4-7s cd.
These things should let you always win if you do them properly.
A weaponset clearly designed to fix the lack of a role rangers have in wvw.
I am bothered that the bugs that are fixed either provide no real benefit or are nerfs to ranger while buffs from bug fixes are left out.
Case point : Light on Your Feet (2 bugs)
1) Duration is 3s (not 4s) – Unfixed
2) Condi duration 100% (not 10%) – Fixed
Clearly a dev made the effort to change this trait but in that same time failed to change the buff duration. It is an integer value change that would be seconds of additional time once the dev who fixed the other bug with this trait finished with the first value.
But maybe it takes a long time because of testing etc?
Case Point 2 : Healing Spring
Patch broke the skill in a way that would be obvious to a playtester so testing isn’t done or is done poorly.
It’s a sad time when ranger is looking at a balance batch worth of bugfix buffs because anet only bugfixes things that help ranger.
Tldr – Stop fixing only bugs that help ranger.

They have practiced to the point where they never lose even fights.
Gw1-like?
Like stacking traps, optional pet, spirits that buff both team’s equally, etc etc.
Why do we have some random guy giving balance proposals to Grouch instead of long-promised Profession Specialists for each forum, I have no idea.
i.e. Weakning Shroud triggering in non-combat. Uh, like it always been?
or:
- Last Rites can cause situations where 2 Necromancers are in downstate indefinitely
– investigatingLike wtf is a problem with it? Isn’t it supposed to work like that, lol…
He’s not a “random guy”, He’s Backpack a very well known engi in the competitive scene and as you can see through the doc, he has a good knowledge of the game and how’s it atm not only ranger.
Backpack is also banned on multiple accounts (forums only) for spamming/trolling. He also rages (quit his AG pugquest team when he was knocked into the losers bracket) and is generally a kitten. I hear worse, but this is only my personal experience with him.
Lets take balance suggestions from him instead of the numerous players who can clearly identify what is lacking from a viewpoint not drowning in angry bias.
condi rangers and mesmers have always been the apex predators of 1v1 combat. problem with condi rangers in organized tournaments is they get focused early on. solo queues, they are one of my favorite builds to play.
but they are countered by a signet necro now.
Don’t be so sure.
Ranger is reliant on these bugs to be effective vs very good players. This is going to be really bad for us.
I am doing fine with settlers in spvp atm. I’ve only had patch for two days so things are liable to change.
I will steal the build that works the best and will play it better and there is nothing you can do about it.
Nothing.
Play whatever team comp you have and make slight adjustments.
Ex. mesmer moa’s the resbot when the first lich goes down/eles bring focus/etc
Winning is more about having good players than a good comp.
Is it “.5s when thrown” or “.5s after the enemy steps on it”.
He should be inside the cliff.
Our role shall be the decap engie.
Quick draw longbow for maximum decap.
Where do we go to find tourney info now?
Why not automate the system so the prizes are sent automatically?
Some players may have goals that aren’t gold-dependent. For example, a player could be seeking a dungeon collection.
This could provide a decent way for pvp players to spend their laurels. Give it something like:
“Gain a buff that gives an additional 15% reward track progress for one hour.”
A track that provides karma would also be nice.
If you are going solo your team will always have less premades because you are part of your team and are solo. You can’t have a full 5 or a 3-2 on your team, while the enemy team can. The same works in reverse as well. As a party you will always have more solo players on the other team.
I know that is obvious but it seems like people think anet has some kind of grudge against them when their matches are just simple probability. Anet also has k values they can tune so they can ensure the matches are fair. A 5 queue could get their mmr “boosted” by say 20% because of the assumption they are in ts and are coordinated. Now matchmaking will find solo players who are 20% better than the individual premade player in order to ensure the balance of the match.
Even though you will face more premades as a solo player, you will have better individual mmrs to account for that.
Go to twitch some time really late at night and scroll waaayyyyy down.
I spend more time on reddit than in game with the 8-9 min queues I get.
I’d say shoutbows had a hand in it too.
It would looks so weird to cast that while moving….
Thanks the the shoutout.
I didn’t see any ranger streamers so I thought that it couldn’t hurt to start. It also seems to be a good way to show my playstyle and reasoning better than youtube videos.
Krait/geomancy/leeching s/d a/t.
Shortbow if rabid.
Settlers otherwise.
Condi clear is not last in first cleared. It is some kind of RNG.
Find some friends and queue with them.
Why should he be forced to play a way he doesn’t want to? It’s not as if forming a team is somehow superior to playing solo.
So play alone. Mmr exists to give you that choice.
Find some friends and queue with them.
You can also try out condi builds if 1v1s are more your thing.
You will improve by grinding games but you will improve far faster if you put real thought into improving a single aspect of play until it becomes habit. For example when I duel players I’ll often attach a condition like “if you hit me with pin down you win the duel” and then I’ll play like this until I dodge it by habit rather than thought.
Unless your enemies are top three ESL teams the class won’t hold you down. You will find that any role a ranger serves can be done better by another class, but unless you play with absolute perfection you have room to overcome the class problems through better play.
What happens when people class swap? What mmr changes?
Maybe this will be different from NA.
At least I encounter dozens of power necros every day I play.
Go krait. Think of the duration as a damage bonus. “Bleeds do 40% more damage etc”
Undead cannot compete vs krait on the damage front.
A single warrior f1 can kill all of them (excluding elite).
Generally: Long cast times, shorter durations than banners, worse buffs, and finite health.
Also from a PvP perspective any condition based build is non viable due to shoutbows and staff eles.
Whilst I agree that fire/air procs are lame because of their random nature, they are not the massive problem op makes them out to be.
I also wouldn’t call them meta. This 5 thief, stealth burst, zerker meta team combo does not exist…
But what about theif, mesmer, sf ele, power necro, dps guard?
I have no expectation of winning an ESL or a major tourney. With that there is no remaining incentive to play well aside from personal reasons.
In SC2 I want a masters league border so I try hard to improve.
In League I want gold league so I try hard to improve.
In csgo I want to play with my friends so I try hard to enter their division.
In gw2 I get no nothing that will reward me for playing well so I feel ranked is pointless. I see people who have 20% worse win/loss ratios pinging their glorious hero armor and I wonder why I’m still here. I place in an AG tourney, top 100 solo queue, and the first ToL qualifier yet my teams don’t get their rewards and I wonder why I’m here.
Give us something for skill over grind, because those people without teams or who are below the skill of ESL feel left out and will move to greener places. My friends list feels more like a high school yearbook than a contacts list, and I’m feeling I know why.
And I know I’m not the only one.
2-3 celes and 2-3 zerk is meta.
Bunkers and full condi don’t have a place in the meta anymore. Bunkers because the lack of damage and the condis because of shoutbows and d/d eles.
As a condi player:
Two Shoutbows or One Shoutbow and One d/d ele.
This much aoe spam condi clear makes condi ranger useless. It shuts me down so badly ai will off class if I see it now.
Fast +1s on side nodes to outnumber me 1v1 serve as the playstyle counter (vs buildwars above) way to handle condi builds.
I don’t play power so I can’t help you much on that.
River drake f2 into drake 4th skill should take the ele below 90%.
You play a build that doesn’t beat turret engies.
Don’t 1v1 them and play the 5v4 on the other points.
I play condi so I beat them with general pressure until heal → condi burst. I also spec sotw and enlargement for the stab so they can’t cc the burst. Another alternative is to run traps. RaO with rabid traps is a crazy bunker buster build that can drop shoutbows and turret engies faster than sotf. You can’t 1v2 though.
If you don’t camp home then Garden of Spirit will cap it!
They just don’t know about the 4v5 problem, or the 3v4 problem if there is a fight at far point. Maybe they will learn, maybe not.
Why would people sync when they can just duo queue?
Learn a new class.
The flow.
Can you stop posting these threads and just kowtow to these players in game?
I think a nice idea would be after a pvp match a box would appear to “continue with your team” where anyone who clicks it would be entered into the queue as a party with the other players who clicked.
I realize this is the same as just inviting allies post match, but I feel that there is a social reason that people don’t do it. People may feel they aren’t friends, or their invite would not be well accepted due to previous games and so on. This would let players who wouldn’t normally party up do so without needing to initiate the invite.
BM doesn’t make sense anymore. 3 points in NM and an axe provides a higher damage pet than an equal investment into BM.
