I understand that some people will not enjoy the higher populations, but the reality is, it is the only way to legitimately fix the population balances, and that is, by trying to get everyone as close to “Cap” population in WvW as possible. If the Maps are Full, then everyone has even numbers, and it never ends up with a 5 vs 42 match up, which anyone on the mid and lower servers knows can happen.

So this was the way they could resolve the issue, by capping the maps. If you can think of another way to balance out the population to eliminate lop-sided match-ups, I am sure Anet would love to hear it.

But as it stands, the direction they took, was to try and fill the maps, so that everyone would have roughly the same number of people on the field. It does remove the issues of being overrun by a higher population server, which has been a major negative issue for WvW for a long time.

I fully understand that there will be issues of “us/them” in the game, after all, it was a link, not a merger, and maybe that will be for the best,so that they can mix things up a bit as time goes on and that it does not feel like a merger, but a rotating link.

Where, perhaps, next week, it can be Ferguson’s Crossing/Northern Shiverpeaks, facing Darkhaven/Sorrows Furnace or some such.

There is much the future might bring, and I for one, hope it is all good things.

I find it funny that people make a big deal about the PvE Content in this game, when every game review site, lists the PvE Content of GW2 as Super Causal Carebear stuff, with the only real challenging content being PvP orientated.

I feel bad for players that have issues that get between them and experiences all the game has to offer. But too often we seen designers make games and progress locked behind skill walls. They do this knowing that a segment of their community simply will not be able to progress to get that.. whatever it is.

It’s a rude awakening to someone who had been enjoying the game, to reach one of these walls, but it’s it is an awakening none the less. In the end of things, games are things meant to be enjoyed, pointless passing of time, that you find enjoyable, they are not going to provide you some valuable life lesson or teach you some marketable trade skill.

So, when you come to a wall, you need to ask yourself, do you have what it takes, Desire/Skill/Ability to surmount it?

If the answer is no, then, as unfortunate as it sounds, yes, it is time to look at other options on what to do with your free time.

It’s game, nothing more, and if you are not having fun, then it time to stop playing.

I was under the impression that Dark Haven was very welcoming to Ferguson’s Crossing. sorry to hear that does not seem to the case for you.

As for personal feuds, I think it would be neigh impossible for Anet to follow, and track all the inter-guild disputes and personal disagreements, much less be able to calculate any kind of server-linking based upon those issues.

How do you ever get into raiding..at all..

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

As in the title, I am wondering how you can ever possibly get into raiding unless you have been doing so from the very start.
Even for the Vale Guardian groups now demand 25+ insights and an eternal title.
I supported raids when they were announced, and I still do.
But I am currently losing hope of ever being able to get into a party reliably.
I do not have a ton of insights, nor do I have the eternal title.
In the current situation, that means no party will ever take me, with most even flaming and shaming me upon joining ( EU server).

Currently I feel like I have almost exhausted all options available to me.
People only want experienced players, but how do you even get experience if nobody is willing to help new people get into raids at all?

I have tried to join parties while being honest.
result: got flamed and kicked.

Tried several guilds who claimed to have a raiding presence among other pve things.
result:Raiders sticked together and only laughed at new people in the guildchat, making fun of them while linking their raid shinies.

Tried raid roster guilds.
result:Only form parties with eternal title and 25+ insights at minimum.

Joined guilds that train/teach raids.
result: Rarely see a run forming, if ever.

Also tried making my own parties.
result: people leaving the second they see people who needed a bit of explanation or unable to link the desired amount of insights or if the party composition is not 100% to their liking, or people who do not want to take suggestions.

After a while, raid wing 2 came out, and a lot of people claimed that that would be the perfect point to get into raiding. So I went out there again.

But once again, the people forming parties demanded eternal title and 30+ insights or even more.
Doesn’t matter, people said, they just want their experienced buddies with them for a first kill, new people will get their chance afterwards!
I am still waiting for that chance, since all parties for wing 2 also demand massive amounts of insights and usually eternal title and killproofs as well.

I have basically been trying since day 1, not saying no to any party or any attempt.
After all this time, I got 9 insights to show for it.
9.
From wing 1, in all this time.
I have never even got the chance to try out wing 2, every time I try and be honest about my insights I get so many profanities and insults at my head it is not even funny and makes me actually afraid to join anything at all.

Do I really have to pay precursor-level prices to get into a raid or straight up lie to people about insights and experience, just to set foot inside of the raid wings?
I am not an idiot, willing to learn, and generally won’t make the same mistake twice.

I really do not blame raiders for wanting to play with those who know their stuff, but please do realise that the entry barrier into raids for people without dedicated raiding guilds is being made very high this way.

It seems like you are either a dedicated high end pve raider with a raiding guild and a big friendslist, or you are a filthy casual who doesn’t care.
But the middleground, people like me who can do it if gotten the chance, are willing to man up and train to ‘git gud’, it seems like we will not get that chance.

I am sure a lot of people will claim otherwise and will tell about their weekly pug succes-stories, but I am really starting to lose hope.

I gotta say, you really seem to have put some serious work into this, you tried several guilds, contacts, training runs, man you have done it all, I am rather amazed you have not been able to really lock into something yet.

It’s not that I am a “Filthy Casual”, that does not care, I have the skills, I have a PS warrior sitting on the side if I ever opted to get into raids, 2 of the 5 guilds I am in, do raids regularly, and I could get another one to get a raid group together if I put some effort into it.

But in the end, it’s just not something I want to be a part of just yet. So, with that put out, take this as the advice from a “Filthy Casual” that does not care.

If it makes you feel any better, I get where you are coming from, not from GW2, but from other games I have played, and I really do wish you well, and I hope that you find what it is you seek.

My Suggestion however:

  • Learn the Raid. Watch the Videos, learn the classes, not just the one you want to do, but learn at least 4 other positions, if you can, learn them all.
  • Build a Proper Raid ready Build. Find out what you need to make it happen, and then, make it happen.
  • Ask in the guilds you are already in for anyone looking to start doing trial runs. Set a time on your calendar, a day you can set aside 3 hours to teach/learn the raid, and have this be constant each and every week.
  • Be ready for your first tries to have very few people show up, if anyone. Don’t get discouraged, just schedule for next week, same time. Even if only 1 person shows up, go in, and do something. Learn a boss, or just how to dodge orbs, or how to stand in circles, or just how to die, a lot, ask them about their build, see if you can help them, and if you can, then help them.
  • Be willing to laugh at the mistakes, and make everyone who came to learn with you, feel good about the time they spent.

In the end, even if you you don’t get many raids done, you will make a lot of friends, have some good memories, be loved by people in your existing guilds, and in the end, that is what an MMO is really all about.

Here is how it is.

The future of raids will be in the hands of the players who do them, not the players that don’t.

If the raid community doesn’t pull in the numbers to make raids look popular, then like many other things, their production will be halted, and their rewards negated.

Exactly in the same way, that is not the people who complain about a build that get it nerfed, it’s the legions of players that jump on the current meta and saturate the game with it, that get it nerfed.

Underwater Combat Overhaul Suggestion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

STIHL.2489

I agree underwater could use more love. Can’t remember the last time I fought there. Personally I would love to have more fully fleshed out “worlds” underwater. Some place you could actually stay and do things for hours, explore and what not, just like on land. If they had that, then I would agree that more skills would be justified (but not separate armor, sorry STIHL). Right now, with such little to do underwater, anet’s time would be better spent elsewhere.

I agree, there is very little to do Underwater, and, I wish they had more for Underwater stuff, but, I’ll be honest, right now, I’d be happy just to able to dye my breather.

In-game guidance for new players

STIHL.2489

I think the biggest issue with this game, is that there is SOO much to do, and you’re basically bomb proof at the start. I mean, go run around in the start area, till you are 20, 40, 60, it does not matter, still in green at 75, who cares. It’s such a fun easy game to just get in and play, that it really does not need much in the way of tutorials. You don’t need to upgrade to yellow, at 65, you can, if you want to, or you can stay in that mix matched set you get to start out with.

I have only been playing a little over a year now, and I remember my first character, the leveling up, the always looking at the TP, to see what I needed to stay optimal, and all that. My Second character, I just leveled to 80 with a “Meh, whatever” attitude, and, the game was still fully enjoyable both ways.

But it’s that, So much you can do, that makes it so hard to make a Walk though. Do you want to level? Yes! How do you want to level? Kill Stuff? Map? Events? Crafting? PvP? you have all kinds of choices, and no real, negative to the direction you take.

Want to wander maps? Go ahead, get exp for everything you do. It’s like so.. No stress in this game, that, you don’t need much hand holding to get through it, I think the biggest thing I had to deal with, was, what I wanted to do, there was so much, I had no idea where to begin.

Underwater Combat Overhaul Suggestion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: STIHL.2489

STIHL.2489

When I first started playing, I didn’t care for underwater combat, in fact, I think that is the last thing I ever updated on any of my characters, with level 80 toons still using a level 18 green speargun. and large part of that, was the total lack of any good breathers, or more to the point, any exotic breathers. My Main had the blackearth, 80th level, one which was the best you could get for the longest time barring some event or something.

Recently, with the new breather ascended, I revisited underwater combat, up graded all my weapons across all my characters, better breathers, and and just really went to finish their gear.

It was a lot of work, but fun as well, as it made such a change when I started to fight underwater, I was winning all over the place. It felt good!

So I think a large part of the issue with Underwater Combat, is mainly how neglected it has been, for a long time, that people just became, “Meh” towards it, I personally would love to see Underwater Combat become more it’s own thing.

I love the fact that you change weapons, skills, and even some armor, when you go underwater, and to be honest, I would like to have seen some Exclusive Underwater Skills, for skills 6 – 10.

Things that really, bring Underwater Combat to Life.

While breathers are cool, I would have liked to see a Full Set of underwater Armor/gear be put into the game, because lets be honest, no one “swims” in full plate, they sink, right to the bottom, and stay there, and those overly flowing cloth gowns would do little but entangle people. I think “aquatic” gear could be it’s own thing, and a fun thing to put into the game.

Barring that, I would like to see more styles for Breathers, and the ability to Dye them.

I would have liked to see them put in more Underwater Stuff, maybe a fully underwater area, like a whole zone, out into the oceans or off Southsun, where there is a whole Underwater City. I think that would be a nice addition to the game.

You have higher chances to get good drops on high scales and high level dailies have more rewards added to them which you can’t get in lower tier.

Anet confirmed multiple times higher scale dailies have higher chance on rare/good loot and simply finishing a high scale gives more EXP/loot than finishing the same fractal on a low scale, yet I’m wrong.

Yes, you are wrong, and the bold is why you are wrong.

As far as daily chests go, you can get better loot from a Level 12 Fractal Daily, then you can can from a level 83, because it’s all RNG.

Have a look at them, do you see any limitations?

With that said, lets have a hand holding walk-thorough. Do you see this chest: Chest of the Core Fractal Hero Now, I have gotten this chest, so I know what it is in it, I also know, you can get it without ever having done a fractal above 50, and you can get it without having a personal fractal level above 50, as I have done that as well.

So what’s in that chest? Oh right, a Golden Fractal Relic

Anyone Else Like the Legendary Journeys?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

STIHL.2489

So, I really like the new legendary journey associated with the new legendary short bow — Chuka and Champawat. So far, it’s been a fun extended questline that tells a story.

The sad part is that I feel like I may be in the minority here. The process was described in the Reddit AMA as not being sustainable, which I interpret as meaning that each legendary collection line takes a lot of effort that isn’t widely appreciated. A lot of people just look at it as some hoops to jump through to get their precursor, which really makes it not worth Anet’s time to develop these collections. On the other hand, if more people saw it as content above and beyond the legendary skin, maybe there would be more of a point to do them.

However, I do appreciate the collections themselves — particularly this latest one. I don’t expect everyone to agree, but hopefully there are others.

Is it worth Anet’s time to do maybe one per quarterly update for those of us who enjoy it? — once LS3 is released, of course!

When I started doing Twilight, well Dusk, Step 1, more exactly, I enjoyed the process of the various places and things. When I got to step 2, which was “Collect a ton of junk”.. I was like.. Meh.. not feeling this.

I don't understand the opposition to mounts

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

STIHL.2489

I think the point is “Wicked Cool Looking Run Animation" is not the same as “Mounts”.
The word mount reeks of That Other MMO which made them an establishment: to most people for something to really be a Mount, it has to be big, cluttering, exagerated, be specificly something that goes between the legs of your toon, and give speed boons.

So, while I would fully support strictly aestethic “Wicked Cool Looking Run Animations" , I’ll never support “Mounts” as most people imagine them.

Well, here is how it is.

A Mount is something you ride to look cool while Traveling, which has nothing to do with a Run Speed Modifier that is sold in a cash shop to gouge players into buying power creep. All players need to do, is realize that.

As for the Broom, Carpet, and Tunneler, I’ll be honest, they don’t attract me, much in the same way around 90% of all the outfits don’t attract me. I mean, I kinda like the Lunatic Guard, Mad King, and maybe 2 others, but to me, most of them, well, I appreciate that some people like them, I don’t find them my flavor.

Cosmetic Mounts are the same way, it could have been more an issue that players did not want Those Mounts, not that they did not want mounts at all.

Case in point, to test the waters, they could re-Skin the Broom into a Hobby Horse, add some flair to it, and who knows, it might sell better.

Maybe make several styles of rugs, like a Lion or Bear, make one out of sewn together Tixx’s plush toys for Wintersday, and have it have a drop stuffing that looks like “snow” under it.

Bet that would sell better then the carpet we have now.

A big part of selling cosmetic, is making it visually attractive, and lets be real, the Broom, Carpet, and Tunneler are a large helping of “meh” right now, but they could viewed as “Old Skool” Awesome if more of them were put out.

It’s not just about Bikes, it about a better product that people want to buy, but people like motorcycles, Just saying.

The More I think about it, Main Tryia Legendary Precursors, can drop from anything really, just a super rare chance, so you can opt to work for one Via “Legendary Journey” or you can get one by pure Luck.

They should apply that same mechanic to HoT legendary Weapons, where the Precursors can drop from any HoT mob, so players can do the Journey, or simply luck out. Same for the Legendary Armor.

I think that would be a good for the game overall.

It’s really all about image, a Flying Carpet, while ‘kinda cool’ is simply not as Impressive as riding a Charr Motorcycle, and does not have that mount feel about it.

When the motorcycle mounts came into WoW I realized a severe problem with them. Noise. They were deafening, and people sat on them everywhere. I could ask friends to dismount but otherwise I had to leave the area when someone else mounted up, and I couldn’t stand to ride my own.

So if you’re ok with your fancy motorcycle mount being completely silent, I’m ok with you having one IF they ever put mounts in.

Well, I want to sympathize with you on this, but, really, GW2 already is overcome with noise pollution, from pets to weapons to level up’s to just character chatter, the game is loaded with just endless noise, I get that some people like that, but I don’t play with sound, so, I can’t really feel your pain on this.

However, I will say, that if someone pays top Gem Prices, for a “Wicked Cool” running animation, they are going to want the “Wicked Cool” sounds to go with it.

Being purely cosmetic is silly. They obviously need to provide a modest travel speed boost to be attractive. It shouldn’t be as much as it is in WoW. I would say 25% or so – the same speed boost some of the class abilities provide.

Why? A Lunatic guard outfit dose not give a fire shield, even tho it has a flame effect around it, a Cooks Outfit does not give me ranks in cookin , or Bonus EXP from cooking, or unlock recipes, or do anything at all related to cooking, a Shadow Assassin outfit does not give me stealth abilities, so why should everything have to do something.

It looks cool, put in some fun animations, and that’s enough.

If you only ask for mounts when what you really want is a run speed boost, it’s not an actual mount you want, what you want is to be forced to buy stuff from the gem store to keep up with some kind of Run-speed-meta.

That might not be what you think you want, but that is ultimately what you are asking for.

So why would you want that?

In the end, yes, all Anet is selling is a “WICKED COOL” LOOKING RUN ANIMATION. So what, let people have it.

Now we are talking.

Imagine a thief running ninja style through the forest of Caledon, or an engie rolling around with a couple of magitech skates, or a mesmer simply hovering around a few centimeters over the ground…

Fantastic.

Now those are some cool ideas as well!

I could really get behind something like “Painted Streak” flowing behind a character as they ran, to give that “Ninja Run” type animation.

2. They’re MASSIVE, easily doubling the size of a character’s model in the worldspace, and occluding that much more terrain/objects.

Not sure where you get this notion that mounts need to be MASSIVE for example, in Black Gold Online, they have bikes that people use to get around that are not that big at all, in fact that character does not sit taller then they would be standing.

Also, lets talk size relativity, case in point, doubling the Size of the Smallest Asura would not even amount to the Leg of the Largest Norn.

Now, I have never played WoW, but I have just looked at mounts in that game, and they do seem obnoxiously large, in comparison to the mounts and modes of travel I have seen in other games.

If that was your only sampling, I’m sorry to hear that.

  • I don’t see this happening, with the legions of cosmetic fluff in the game, I think people would be able to grasp “it’s just for show

Read the previous mount threads. Usually the people that asked for purely cosmetic mounts on page 1 specify, that “purely cosmetic” means “with only basic speed boosts” on page 3 and then go on to state that anything less than 200% boost would be stupid on page 5. That’s a pretty consistent pattern.

This discussion is not that discussion.

Here we have pretty much established that we have ‘mounts’ in the game already, and if we got more added, they would follow the existing theme.

As for “Purely Cosmetic” giving any kind of boost, I don’t recall my “Purely Cosmetic” outfits giving me any kinds of bonus, so not sure how they figure “Cosmetic = Bonus”

That’s on them, and maybe for the best the topics don’t get merged.

“What does it do? Are you faster? Got new skills? Anything?”

By this Metric.

Do Outfits Do anything?
Do Mini’s Do anything?
Do Dyes Do Anything?
Do Bobble Head Laboratories Do anything?
Do Aviator Memory Boxes Do Anything?
Do Endless Tonics Do Anything?
Do The Endless Skins for our Weapons/Armor/Back Do anything?

I am pretty sure, that if we took a moment to look at all the stuff in this game, there is an insane amount things that don’t Do Anything, the reason for this, s because it allows the game to be added to, without power creep being added to the mix.

So yes, you could pass on mounts, but if your metric that it needs to Do something needs to be met, I imagine you haven’t got anything else that is purely cosmetic, nor do you do most content, because there is a ton of stuff in this game, that has no reason to be done outside of style and look.

Yes, this game is called “Fashion Wars 2” and a lot of people like it that.

If the only thing holding you to this game was functionality, the game would have ended for you a long time ago.

Maybe a definition of what a mount is would help.
Small mounts which add very little extra clutter to the game would be OK , but I am guessing thats not what people want.
The last 2 games I played with mounts which was WOW and Lotro had a major problem with added clutter of people riding their mounts into towns or anywhere there were NPCs , and the mounts simply totally obscured the NPCs , so anyone not on a mount couldnt do anything.
If theres a button labelled turn off mounts, so Im not affected by other peoples mounts then fine , but I bet this isnt what people want either.

Black Gold Online, had a fun solution to this. Players could not interact with an NPC while on a mount, so, there was never any mounts cluttered around a vendor. You also could not heal, fight, or interact with anything else in the game, while on a mount.

If it would be hidden by default, and if it conveyed no boost to travel speed, sure, I’d not object. I have this feeling, though, that if they were implemented in that fashion, we’d see tons of:

  • Not fair! I want other players to have to see my awesome mount!
  • Not fair, we spent [insert currency and amount] and don’t travel any faster? WTK, ANet ripped us off.

At that point, the potential value to Anet would be reduced, because the market would be divided. I wish I didn’t expect this of people, but I do.

  • It would not be hidden by default, exactly like a Flying Carpet, or Broom, it would be active, unless it needs to be turned off due to graphic issues (much like Mini’s)
  • I don’t see this happening, with the legions of cosmetic fluff in the game, I think people would be able to grasp “it’s just for show

Members not repping the guild, never bother to interact with the guild members who ARE repping and they’re there just as a reminder they don’t really care for ur guild or anyone in it. I hate that little oval greyed out green symbol against their name and when u hover over it, the bracketed message that says (not representing).

re: Would mounts be culled if, as pointed out earlier in this thread (without a supporting quote unfortunately)

Since Mounts would be Purely Cosmetic, they would just get Hidden Like Miniatures and people would return to their default model.

That shows a large lack of understanding. We already know that for mounts, you need more than a skin to purchase in the gem store for them to work ingame. Anet would have to charge phenomenal amounts just to cover the dev costs for mounts.

Eh? we already have a Broom, a Flying Carpet, and a tunneler, what’s the big deal?

If that’s your definition of mounts, then /thread?

I think you and everyone else are fully aware that those are not the mounts people are after, otherwise these threads would cease to exist.

The thing is, that is what should be done to resolve the entire issue.

In the current form of GW2, everything is mainly cosmetic. Why not Mounts?

Actually, I agree but that’s not what people are asking for that I and others disagree with. Simply decreeing magic carpets and brooms as mounts will not placate them.

I imagine not, hence why I suggested they put some bigger more bad kitten looking ‘mounts’ in the gem shop.

It’s really all about image, a Flying Carpet, while ‘kinda cool’ is simply not as Impressive as riding a Charr Motorcycle, and does not have that mount feel about it.

Which really, what would it hurt anyone to toss that out and see if it sold?

In the end, yes, all Anet is selling is a “wicked cool” looking run animation. So what, let people have it.

I don’t understand the desire to want mounts just because every other game out there has them.

I wish you guys would stop arguing about what “pay to win” means and instead talk about whatever it is that you think is wrong with the game. Arguments about language aren’t likely to be resolved here — even scholars disagree with the meaning of words|phrases that are new or evolving.

Isn’t the issue that some people think — with good reason — that those without elite specs are at a disadvantage in PvP? Is there anyone who disagrees with that? Assuming you agree that elite specs are “superior”, is that okay for competitive PvP?

Apparently ANet thinks it’s okay, because they have had two opportunities to rebalance vanilla specs vs elites and the relative power remains the same. I remember them saying that elites weren’t supposed to be superior, that “elite” was just a a jargon term, but their actions seem to indicate otherwise.

Disclaimer: I own HoT and I don’t play much PvP, so I’m not sure that my opinion means much in terms of how the community feels or the long-term health of the game mode.

tl;dr stop arguing about the words and focus on the concern: are elites too powerful relative to base specs and, if so, how big a problem is that for the game mode?

I don’t find them to be an issue. It’s still a major issue of skill and build, as opposed to one spec, which once known can be countered.

Two equally skilled players, the one using an Elite Spec is not promised victory, as such, I have no issues with it being in the game as it is.

P2W clear and simple is you pay for something with real money, which grants you more chance to win in a competitive PvP game

No.

Lets get something clear, P2W (Pay to Win) is not some fuzzy type of deal, where you can split hairs over it, it’s outrage and meaning are drawn from what exactly it means.

P2W means that someone can pay money and beat you, regardless of your skill or time invested into the game, and the ONLY way you can beat them, is you pay more.

That is why it was called “Pay to Win” and not “Pay for Crutch” or “Pay for some potentially beneficial ability”

If you want to toss out being true to the definition of what P2W is, then you would be wrong, because an Elite Spec does not guarantee you victory over a non-elite spec. There is still a large matter of class, build and skill to be taken into consideration, which can sway the victory.

You use the gear you have. There is no reason to salvage infusions unless you never plan to do another fractal, ever again.

In regards to the Versatile 5/5 infusions, you don’t gain much from them, especially when you consider that at best you 70 points total, divided among Offensive, Defensive, and Utility.

However, some people, like myself, found it easier to have one character just for Fractals, and another just for Dungeons. IE: I have a Warrior for Dungeons and a Guard for Fractals, and while I can use them both interchangeably, it was just easier to put all the right potions, and dungeon meta-gear and such on the Warrior for dungeons, not to mention, Dungeons are fully doable in Exotic, so, it was just easier to make an Exotic Zerk Meta Warrior, then it was to make a second set of Ascended for my Guard.

But everyone can play their own way.

In the end, Infusions are mainly a non-issue outside of Fractals, for all but the most painfully hair splitting min/max players anyway.

Now wait a moment.

Lets talk travel.

Ok we have Teleporters, and we can Run faster then any land animal, as well as being able to swim faster then sharks, and the like.

So, yes, it seems kinda silly to want a mount, and I would agree with you, if there was some move to make the mounts functional.

However, in today’s world, I can ride a motorcycle yet, I have ridden horses for the fun of riding a horse. I ride my bike for exercise and fun. I’ve ridden a horse drawn carriage, a dog drawn carriage, and used a pogo stick, stilts, unicycle (which I an not good at, at all), I have face plated into a Surfboard, belly flopped into a boogy board, rode a paddle boat, canoe, and tube down a river, all in all, these things I used were for the fun of just using them. I have a Truck for when I need to get to work, or somewhere, I have access to a Motorboat if I need to go on water. So, I don’t need to use any of those things, I used them because they were fun things to use.

Mounts should be treated the same way.

In Tyria, GW2, Mounts should be something that really has no practical use, and is done purely for the fun of it or for the show.

In that vein, I could so see the following kinds of Mounts Put into the Game.

  • Hover Board (as in the floating Skateboard that was used in “Back to the Future”) with an Asura flair to it, perhaps, other skins could be added later. Add in some fun features, like do a 720 spin and face plant.
  • Motorcycle. There are so many amazing designs that could be used for this already, like Carr inspired salvage steam punk, give it a smoke trail, tire tracks, and add in some funky abilities like, “do a wheelie” “Rev Engine” or “crash and burn” and people would be all over this.
  • Hobby Horse: Oh come on, we all know people would buy something like this, have a whole series of heads, everything from a rainbow Horse (To Match Dreamer), to a Palomino, Maybe reuse the heads from the Plush Mini’s. Have it make the clopping coconut sound as you ride around, give it a few emotions like “Whinny” “Buck” and “Dismount”.
  • Hover Rider (Imagine Hobgoblins Rider, from Spiderman Comics/Movie), use existing Mini Teq as the base, give it some flapping and roaring sound. Emotes: “Spin in Circle” “Land” “Roar” “Fire”(This shoots the breath weapon, but does no damage). You could re-skin this would The Shatter, Shadow of the Dragon, Glint, also a Asura design, this list could go on.
  • Pogo Stick, well there has to be some silly in this list. Would need to have that “boing” sound, and a few emotes, like “Jack Hammer” where you bounce really fast in a tight location, maybe wobble around a bit.
  • Unicycle, because, yah. Add in a Ability like “Juggle” “Fall” and “Spin”
  • Rock/War Dog. The large glowing Dogs. Simply because I think these would be a cool looking mount.
  • Cloud or Mini-Twister, The idea here, would be to the turn the lower half of the character into a cloud, or mini-twister, to give them the effect of looking like a Genie, or something. Have emotes for the cloud like “Thunder Storm” where it turns dark, and shoots small bolts of lighting, maybe makes thunder noises, “Rain” where it rains and leaves a puddle, LOL! Anyway you get the idea, I think this might go well with the Wings we already have in game.
  • Mechanical Legs. This could take many forms, like have the lower half of a player turn into a Mechanical Horse, they become centaur looking, or just turn the legs into mechanized legs. A lot of options with this one, and a ton of styles that could be used.
  • The Horse, Ok, yah, the Traditional “Horse”, same idea, clopping hoofs, a few emotes, like “Rear Up” “Whinny” “Dance” and of course “Dismount”

There is a lot that could be done with this, and with the new expansion coming up, might be an idea to test the waters with something better then what they already put in.

I thought the argument was we dont need mounts, of course I want one for style, but I dont know it might look wierd considering the height of the world/landscapes, and the map size.

Need is such an odd word in a game like GW2. There is so much we have, use, enjoy, and pay for, that we never Needed to start with.

And I agree, a Mount is about style and look, not Need, thus keeping Mounts as a Cosmetic Toy, is what would make them Amazing and enjoyable.

I have thought of the height issue, was wondering about that, had a discussion with a friend about it, and that all “mounts” should not give a player added height, as that could mess up the camera angels and such. But I guess if a player is cool with their character taking up more visual real estate, I guess it’s not a problem.

More directed towards the raid team, what finally changed design wise to give us a DPS golem? After so long of obscurity, why now?

With the introduction of raiding, we re-approached the topic in an effort to provide tools that individuals and groups can use to become more deeply engaged in our PvE. The Aerodrome provided us the moment to build that tool. It was more a matter of opportunity and timing than it was design-philosophy shift.

Q. Is there any way we can get food buffs and wrench buffs added to the list of customizations in the DPS testing area? They could go away when leaving the area.
A. The issue here was one of scope and the hundreds of food items in the game currently. We wanted to focus on giving you the best experience we could in the time available and so food / utilities was moved to the backlog. We will continue to review the backlog to see where this would best fit and ensure we have bandwidth to accommodate it properly.

Q. If possible to share, what is the intention for raids beyond wing 3? Should we expect more things this year or will the next raid wing only come with expansion #2?
A. Sorry – at this time I cannot comment on the next raid wings. Spoilers!
Are any changes planned to make Bandit Trio less random and more exciting?
Have you tried it without using the environmental buffs? (oil, bees, Wargs). We even gave it an achievement!

No problem on the backlog; I understand software development triage is a real thing! Hopefully those can be added at some point, though, as that’s really among the last things needed to get a perfect representation of one’s personal DPS! (Super amazing implementation, by the way; everyone loves it so far!)
I’ve done the achievement without the environmental effects, but the issue is that there’s no reward motivation to do it more than once.
Is there any plan for this “hard mode” to give enhanced rewards in the future to ameliorate that?
Also, the Tres Banditos (particularly Narella) have very uncontrollable aggro. Sometimes Narella will shoot phantasms and allow the raid group to freely attack her, and then some other times she’ll shoot anyone in melee and really drop the hammer! Are there any plans to make her in particular a little more controllable, or is the uncontrollable chaos intended in the encounter?

We are actively discussing an alternative mode for raids (easy / hard), but we have not finished our investigations or finalized any decisions.

I will ask the designer to look into Narella’s behavior and see if anything seems out of line.

(I spoke to the designer – he said the chaos is ans intended part of the fight mechanics and you should ‘burn’ her down as fast as possible!)

Fascinating thoughts. I’ll say here what I said on the other Topics of ilk.

Another thought…. I’m not a broom or carpet guy, but a skateboard. Yes, I’d buy one. It would work just like the broom. No animations needed. Have the character stand in the standard “in combat” stance but without weapon. You’re still running everywhere but now it looks so much cooler, especially when you “ride” off a cliff and switch to glider. xD

That’s a great toy idea! An asura designed hover-board perhaps! I’d buy it too!

(Still against mounts before someone jumps on my back!!)

I don’t have any issues with mounts.

We already have: a Magic Carpet mount, a Flying Broom mount, and a Tunneling Drill mount.

Now, before anyone says anything about how those are not “mounts” we as players can already outrun Moa’s Giant Dogs, Wolves, Deers, Panthers, Lions, and all manner of animals that would be faster then horses, any animal we could use as a mount in GW2 would in fact run slower then we can, so Mounts would purely exist for cosmetic purposes, assuming they did not in fact slow us down.

With that understood, I could see other kinds of fun mounts, like maybe a Miniature Tricycle, Pogo Stick, an Asura style “Hoverboard”, or a Charr Gear Bike. There is a whole realm of ideas for cosmetic Mounts in GW2. Including, for those that would want it, the iconic majestic stallion, perhaps made of fire or even as a steam creature, that leaves flaming hoof prints. But regardless of what mount we had, in the end, we would be able to outrun it on our own two feet, because we can outrun everything else.

However, I think the real reason why we don’t have legions of cosmetic mounts, as collectible and available as mini’s, is because no one was really into them, or Anet would have made more of them.

I was already ahead of you on the hover board idea.

But, we already have ‘mounts’ in the game, I am ok with bigger ones, or more extreme ones being put in, as long as they remain cosmetic.

lol ya we wouldn’t want to shatter that very fragile and oh so important open world pve balance.

It’s not about balance, but lets set this straight, the last thing this game needs is some obnoxious item that we would be obligated to buy from the Gem Store to keep up with the current meta on Run Speed.

While I can see the attraction to the whole “Wicked Looking Mount” much in the same way I can see the attraction to an “Amazing” looking anything, it’s why we farm legendary weapons, spend hundreds of gold and gems on dyes, and outfits, and weapon skins, and a slew of other pretty little items. So I can fully support cosmetic mounts, make them wicked cool looking things we can all show off, like our various gliders, dyes, weapon skins, outfits, none are any better then the other, it’s all a matter of a specific look.

I simply don’t see the attraction to to put in some system were everyone has to pay “a little more to run a little faster”, and thus turning Run Speed into some hackneyed hybrid “Pay to Win” Scheme.

What would even inspire you to want to do that in the first place?

In the current form of GW2, everything is mainly cosmetic. Why not Mounts?

There is no reason for mounts to be treated as anything other then a Cosmetic Item, for all the same reasons why people say don’t put them in the game. But by putting them in the game in the cosmetic sense, that resolves all the issues, from all sides.

I am sure Anet would make some serious sales, if they made the ‘mounts’ in this game more kitten then they currently are.

For example, Imagine, a Mini-Teq Hover Rider (Think what Hobgoblin from Sipderman Comics/Movie rides on), which they could then re-skin with Shatter, and every other Dragon Herald, and people would snatch those up that like there was no tomorrow.

I know I have said this a few times, but Charr Drive War Machines, put in a Charr Inspired Motorcycle design, and even if to just ride (read ‘run’) around Lions Arch, people will get a kick out of it, add some sounds, and what have you, a smoke trail, maybe tire tracks. Which they could then Re-Skin with all kinds of Designs, to match all the Black Lion Armor Skins, Imagine a an Ironclad Motorbike to go with the whole set. People would eat that up like Sugar Coated Cheetos and Mountain Dew Cereal.

We all know it too. The only reason why people ask for mounts, is that they don’t look at the “broom” or the “magic carpet” as a mount, it’s as someone else said “Small and Flimsy” it’s not “FULL SIZE” but truth be told, if it was big and wicked looking.. suddenly (Angelic Music) it becomes a mount!

Everyone goes home happy, and these topics die away.
