The solutions to this is easy. Get rid of the jumping puzzle and stop giving out badges for pveing. I hate that a map will have a que and it turns out you have like 20 people dancing at spawn keep and 30 people at the jumping puzzle “getting badges for legendary not really here for pvp”.

Want pve and pvp to mix? Add a wv3 dungeon sorta like DF from DaoC. Till then take the jp and grub and other crap out.

I don’t think removing it will ever happen. I do beleave it needs to change for the reasons stated.

It overly rewards superior numbers. Rallying off pve mobs in wvw is kitten And it’s not really well balenced across classes.

Thief
Thieves are the masters of mobility, stealth and high single target damage. They can be very fragile if you counter their stealth with area of effects or large stacks of conditions, but they trade this fragility in order to have some of the highest burst damage in the game. They are able to help allies through traps, venoms and the mobility to flank most encounters.

No one missed it, they are that already.
Problem is that they got 50% increased movement in stealth. They didn’t needed it and WvWvW will hurt badly for it. Even more thieves and less of the other ‘weak’ professions, it’s not what the players want.

Not that I’m going to use that trait at all but doesn’t it make it so people would take points away from burst to get a trait in a surviabilty tree? So well they would be moving faster they would do less damage and they would only move faster in stealth.

Am I the only guy on SoR who is fine with 2nd place? We would dominate a lower tier and get are kitten handed to us in the first tier so…. As far as I’m converned there is no benifit to winning and at least I know I can always get a fight when I log on.

Just got out of WvW… BAM BAM BAM poof BAM BAM BAM poof … Ya, I’m all done with that. Thief needs SERIOUS looking at with stealth. Revealed does absolutely nothing. Should be 10 seconds at least between stealth abilities. I thought this game wasn’t going to have perma stealth rogues. Guess not…

complain to anet. enough complaints and this class will get what it deserves,

enough complaints? are they blind? These forums are full of complaints about thieves. Maybe they are taking their time in trying to find the best way not to over nerf them but limit the amount of burst + mobility + stealth + culling issue.

Yup thread after thread of the same people complaining about the same thing over and over. And in every thread there people who say that the have no problems vs thief and even give you ideas how to beat them.

More on topic. Most annoying class for me to fight in WvW would be a well played necro.

Wait, wait, wait. You’re saying that if I’m blinded, the enemy blocks or the enemy dodges my phantasam won’t spawn and it goes on cool down. Yet if I dodge/blind/evade a thief attack the thief doesn’t lose initiative.

How the hell is that balanced?

If they attack in stealth and don’t hit you though, it doesn’t break stealth. So if they miss their backstab, they can instantly try again with no cost of iniative and no breaking of stealth.

Cloak and dagger can be used again if you have initiative, so if they miss one attack, they can instantly use it again. This wouldn’t be a problem if the thief needed initiative for other attacks but both p/d and d/d mostly just use initiative for C&D, the rest comes from auto attack, steal and attack from stealth.

D/D uses more then just c&d and auto attack. Death blossom for evadeing, dancing dagger for the slow on runners an heart seeker when target is below 25%. If anything I find c&d to be the least reliable attack we have.

It isn’t even about whether they are counterable. It’s just not a fun mechanic to play against, even if you know their skills up and down and regularly defeat stealth characters.

Past MMO’s and GW2 figured out that long CC is not fun for players, because no one likes not having control of their character for long portions of a fight. As such GW2 doesn’t have CC remotely as punishing as some other games. Unfortunately fighting half a battle against something you can’t see is equally as frustrating as long CC and not very fun. Gee, I’ll swing at the air over here until this guy pops up visible again…

Funny that the CC you talk about is also the direct counter to d/d glass cannon thief. One well timed imobilise and he is toast.

Notice that there are players and specs that have no problem fighting thief? Yeah, learn from them.

@wasabee don’t bother telling people how to kill thieves there are thread after thread that tells people what to do. The problem is no one wants to change there spec. They feel that what ever spec they have should be effective vs what ever and once the crusade for thieves is done (either nerf or not) the same people will complain about a different class/spec. I mean its even in this thread. Bows suck vs stealth and someone chooses to run two bows, is this a bad choice for him? Nope it’s that thief is op! Duh!

Lol, try fighting thieves from a ranger’s POV. for the second or two you can actually target the thief, 50% of your arrows miss. Don’t even get the luxury to auto attack the air as the arrows go straight down while nothings targeted.

have you heard of weapon switch? try it one day, it will improve your skills

I’m a ranger, I like to use SB and LB. should I change my weaponset of choice because 1 class has cheap mechanics? lol

Yes, or you can accept the fact that you will be weak against said class well being more powerful against classes that have limited range choices.

First rendering needs to be fixed. Also even thou I play a thief you should be able to mark a target when not grouped and that mark should stay on the target. Yes it should go invis when the player does but as soon as the player reappears so should the target.

Outside of that I think the issue comes down to players and humans in general. You don’t remeber scrubs you kill and move on. You for sure remeber the ones who kick you kitten

It happens to me and I will admit it. They have been people from all classes I have fought that make me question game mechanics. Here’s the thing, I go look into it and find out what they are doing and how and if there is a way for me to counter it if I can with the build I have. Sometimes the answer is no and that my spec really has no chance vs them and that is ok because other classes and specs can counter them. That’s the thing you have to know that there are some specs you can’t beat with the spec you run and if you change your spec to beat them there will be other things you will be weak against and that is what we call balance. No single spec is good at everything!

I don’t remeber the guild they where in but to the blackgate Mesmer and thief running in a two man group who fought a ele and theif in the ioj bg last night.

I’m the char thief from RoTV that you fought last night. I have never seen people rally off mobs as much as you two did. Grats on finally downing us too bad there was no mobs left to rally off of or I think we could have had that fight go for a few more minutes. It was the best fight I had all night and is one of the main reasons I do wvw.

I have played a thief as my main since launch. I also have an 80 warrior, and 80 ranger. With all 3 I have full exotic offensive and defensive sets and have played many many hours in WvW with all 3 so I have a good idea of damage capability and defensive/survival capability with all 3.

All I can say is to all of the people saying “if you nerf thief the class will be unplayable” all need to just mellow and chill and stop being overdramatic.

I never use backstab or heartseeker builds because it just feels cruel to do that to people. It EXPLODES anyone without toughness and even against a target with 3700 armor heartseeker spam in it’s current state can do over 30k damage in a few seconds. (if you don’t believe me you don’t know thieves very well)

Now i’m sure some people here will call me a liar or L2P or whatever lame childish excuse people give. The point is I have played both types, I know for a fact what thieves are capable of and they are the most over powered direct damage dealing class, and it has nothing to do with stealth.

In my opinion they could nerf thieves overall direct damage by 30% and thieves would still be above par compared to other direct damage classes. Notice i’m only saying direct damage. Condition damage builds are fine as there are already plenty of ways to counter any condition damage build for any class. (again if you don’t know play more)

I welcome any nerfs for thieves they give us.

As it is right now the builds people cry about the most is p/d condition build that spends most of the time in stealth and can pretty much escape at will and the burst build d/d that is a paper tiger for the most part.

The problem is people are confusing the two builds, they fight a theif that is porting around and kitten them off. Then later they get dropped hard by a different theif and just assume its all the same.

You say nerf dps but don’t want to touch the condi build?

Did anyone think that Anet is ok with this type of damage? Examples would be things like kill shot (see 16k and 20k before) and 100 blades. Also 6k AoE hits (up to 30k if you hit 5).

If you nerf the big damage classes then it pushes people into full condition and bunker builds. It’s a fine line to walk and well people don’t like burst classes but would full pow/vit/cond damage builds on every class be better or more fun? Besides it would negate any reason to have precision, prowess and toughness.

Let’s talk about “e-sports”…

Did you ever play GW1? If your monks took two seconds to respond to a spike by the enemy team, you’d be dead every time. Quick reflexes, situational awareness, and anticipation are all a central part of most competitive video games.

I don’t really care for Backstab spikes. I don’t think it’s, like, necessary for thieves. But you’re complaining about 100-to-0-in-two-seconds-flat builds when you’re playing a warrior designed to do just that and only that. Your build does telegraph its attack much more, but you also:

  1. Do more damage total.
  2. Have much more hp even with your “glass cannon” getup.
  3. Get 5 seconds of invulnerability.

My armor is all toughness/vitality exotics and my runes are full toughness as well: Melandru. Should I and every other class go full toughness vitality to combat a single broken class? I think not.

A. You can see glass cannons coming and thus respond accordingly. I can’t see a thief coming and I don’t think its fair playing whack the invisible mole to try to counter one that is stealthing your way.

B.All glass cannons when they engage they stay and pay the price for their engagement which is a fair deal. Thieves on the other hand can simply get away, heal and return to do the same thing when the opponents cool downs are down.

This is a lie. There is no way you have 20k hp and full vitality. Get out of here if you can’t even be bothered with telling a good lie.

Btw nice job cutting your combat log off right t the bulls charge. I’m sure that was followed by a 100 blades but no reason to see that damage is there.

O and d/d eles do massive damage and don’t have to stay and pay a price. The classes that do either have range(ranger/engi) good armor and support (guard/warrior) or two lives (necro)

How to recover from Thief stealth

Here is how you kill a thief.

See the house? Use a AoE knock back he will get the exposed debuff from leavin the area to soon.

Stack conditions on the Thief.

Time his stealths and use a channeled ability on him they will keep hitting him in stealth.

The heal that gives stealth has a cast time. Interrupt it.

Dodge c&d it cost five init.

Time your cc + burst and attack as soon as he comes out of stealth.

Lastly at Anet. Make name tags render first so people can still target the thief even if his toon has yet to render.

Heartseeker - That Damage

I have both a Guardian and a Theif.

I run in a small group for wvw and my main partner is a d/d ele.

My guardian can hit for 4-6k AoE attacks and eat people’s lunch all day long yet no one screams about that. My Thief hits for slightly more vs one target and people cry on the forums. My guard does not have the escape me mechanics that my thief does for sure but he is tankier and can stay in the fight longer and hurt more people well throwing might out to party members the whole time. Both of them are fun and play differently. That’s what I would call balance.

Now my buddy? He is as Tanky as my guard and does as much damage too and has the mobilty of my thief. So is he op? No because one good imobilize or a well time kill shot drops him too.

My point is that right now I don’t really think any class is overpowered. All of them have a weakness you just need to find it. I also feel that when culling gets fixed most people’s problems with Thief will go away.

Last statement. Be careful who you asked to get nerfed because the whine train my focus on you next (looking at you d/d ele)

Outside of culling thieves are a good class not op.

That said hang out on the forums long enough and you see that thieves, dd ele, guardian, warrior and Mesmer are all considered op. this just seems to me that maybe necro/ranger/engin need some love.

I have been advocating for a change like this since beta.

I would be careful with the honor for keeps it may encourage people not to clam easily contested keeps.

But yes something needs to change because spamming your f key is not really a viable option for badge collection. It nothing is more frustrating then being served over when you trying to collect your bags. Losing the loot is bothersome enough but losing the badges is infuriating.

My attitude is if, or rather when, the ascended/infused gear becomes crucial for content outside of FotM (and ignoring PvP in my case since that’s not my thing) then they will inevitably introduce other means of acquiring it. I can see the issues that will cause already, “wahhh I did nothing but grind FotM for months and now some noob is getting equivalent gear from world boss chests waaahhh”, but that’s a whole other story.
In other words, I’ll just wait it out. That’s the beauty of not paying a sub.

I’m just waiting for the phrase “Welfare Ascendeds” to be introduced.

Any bets on when that will happen?

It will happen as soon as you can get it thru wvw. It won’t matter how freaking time consuming it is to get it people will always say pvp is easier then dungeons (normally the same people who refuse to do pvp. Ironic really)

Also changing up PvP, I bet with MORE Progression. Can’t get enough tread mill in this non-tediouis, no tread mill game.

Will they ever face the fact no matter how much they try, how much pressure is put on them to do so, they will NEVER take WoW gear tread mill enthuasiasts away from WoW?

In the last write up they said ascended gear would be available thru wvw this is most likely the progression he is talking about.

Also maybe it’s just me but a horizontal progression system for wvw would be kick kitten And may e get people out to fight even when there server is losing.

I can give Anet the benefit of the doubt on the pve content. Most of it was most likely in development before the game went live.

Now, what would be nice is getting some answers about wvw updates.

Wvw progression and or personal ranking system?

When will ascended gear be introduced as a purchasable item thru wvw?

Any plans to fix the lack luster badge system?

These are just a few of the many things that have been asked about wvw. I know they have a policy not to talk about stuff before it is close to live but come on a little hint wouldn’t hurt.

And as for the whole pve pays the bills the bull crap. As a wvw player I’m broke most the time so when I want bag slots and bank slots and dyes I pony up cash (over a hundred bucks so far) since money gain in wvw is kitten I don’t even mind dropping money since I like the game and will gladly keep dropping money if my form of play is supported.

GW2 is PVE centric game btw so expect more PVE content to be released especially at Christmas.

Umm what? Spvp, wvw (pvp), and pve. I’m not saying the game is slanted more towards pvp but I would never claim it was a pve centric game with 2 of the three selling points being a form of pvp.

And well pve events are fun and all I really hope that the next content push has the changes to wvw they keep mentioning.

What is up with Badge of Honor acquisition?

Badge drops from bags is the worst way to acquire any form of currency. I said during beta it should be a bounty point system and I will stick by it even now.

They could even do it now by letting badges drop still but make them an item you turn in for bounty points. 1 badge equals x points. That way there are still badges that you can get for your legendary or you can trade them in to get bp that you then spend on gear and upgrades and siege.

I’m not a fan of the new level of gear they added and I can only hope that this is a one time thing and that they finishing rolling out a full set of it and just add infusions to help people progress thru dungeons.

Now as for wvw they need to step up and add a way for people to acquire the same level gear thru wvw and hopefully add a personal progression system for wvw (lateral progression not vertical) this will help keep more people in wvw. As it stands you will have people look at the score see they are losing and just go FoTM since they can’t progress in wvw at all. I enjoy the fight and so do a lot of others but it seems to me that a large group of players need to either be winning or close to it to bother showing up, maybe lateral/horizontal progression would fill that need (it also doesn’t hurt to reward the dedicated also).

It was stated that changes are coming to wvw. Lets just hope it’s sooner rather then later. Spvp and pve have both gotten things lets get something out there for wvw players.

Like I said before. If this is the last tier of gear they plan on implementing and they add a way to earn it thru wvw then go ahead (both mentioned in Chris’ post). Exotics where to easy to get anyways and it wouldn’t hurt to work a bit for good gear.

But if after the full set of ascended is out if they feel the need to cave to the treadmill and start adding yet another tier of gear then I will go find a game that lets me just play. That’s why I came here to begin with.

How to end the zerg meta game ...

Actualy I think this is abreast idea. Your low ranks would be easy to obtain and you would most likely stay with the Zerg till you ranked up enough that you had experiance and it was now becoming slow to rank up in such a big group.

But the maps would need to be much larger for this to work.

Also to the guy that said this discouraged one type of play for a different one. Yes and no. There will always be a Zerg since there is always safety in numbers. A change like this would hopefully turn that Zerg from 80 people down to 40 with a set of smaller groups roaming. There will always be a time and place for the full force to attack and it will still happen but hopefully a change like this would make it so we stop seeing the Zerg just roll from objective to objective. You don’t need 80 people to take a supply point but as of right now it is an all to common thing.

And since they are adding ascended gear and plan on making it that you can earn it in wvw that would be the perfect time to add a new wvw currency or modify badges in a meaningful way.

Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

This is the first step in gear progression with more armor and weapons coming later with other dungeons (see blog post). So right now the difference is not huge but add say 3% crit damage across 6 prices of armor and 6 accessory items and now you have 36% extra. It’s not what it is now its what it will become that people are talking about.

From there I don’t know where they are going to take it. Maybe we will get lucky and that will be that and just your infusions will have to change for end game pve and they will bring ascended level gear into wvw as a badge purchasable item and all will be even. Who knows?

Yeah you need inspection and gear score and titles you can link to prove you have done it 1 billion times. That’s going to awesome!!

Freaking nonsense, the stats and infusions that you need to make the monsters just as hard as any normal boss mob. It’s called a treadmill for a reason. You do a lot of running but your not getting anywhere. If this is just the start then they really are just screwing WvW players since you use pve gear in wvw and better pve gear will give an advantage in wvw against people who don’t do those dungeons, thus making people play the game “not” there way.

How to encourage more group vs. group encounters?

The issue is that zerging is too easy, easy to spread speed to everyone, turtling protects you from AoE, more people make it easier to Rez and harder for small groups to down people, and maps are so small it’s easy to just Zerg point to point.

AoE needs to be changed to hit more people and taper off the farther from the center you are forcing people to actualy dodge and spread out.

Leave speed alone but make maps bigger.

And this is more of a personal observation from years of RvR in DaoC. Add a rank system the gives you more speed and faster rezing and faster build times on siege. This way if your new to wvw your attracted to running with the Zerg but the longer you do it you become more able to run with smaller groups. This is what made roaming groups attractive in DaoC. At a certain point you advanced enough that running with the Zerg was no longer attractive.

Gear Grind coming to WvW?

If this Is the road they are going down then to make it so those who play this game for wvw only would need the following done.

1) a more deverse set of badge gear with different stats for different builds because some people need crit or cond damage on there gear.

2) runes, sigials,gems that bring wvw gear inline with ascended gear (from badges)

3) badges need to be awarded upon kill and not from looting because if the above is done badges just became way more important.

4) some form of lateral progression from WvW.

Ascended gear, good job. WvW progression next?

Well I hope they at least add special upgrade sigials that can only be acquired thru wvw that bring your exotics up to par with the pve dungeon gear. Also add a better selection of wvw gear the current stuff is kinda crap for most builds.

I don’t want power creep but if that’s the road your going please don’t make me do pve. It’s not why I play this game and I don’t feel it’s right to make people who strictly wvw have to do dungeons to stay competitive in wvw vs people who take a few weeks off to grind out a dungeon.

If they add new classes I would like to see something along the lines of.

Ritualists, summons ghosts and spirits to buff and debuff well useing attacks to control the battle.

Reaver heavy armored class that mainly does damage with conditions, range and melee

Blademaster (dervish) medium armor mainly melee high mobilty non stealth. (My favorite type of class)

If this is a stat that only effects you ability to complete the dungeon ie +damage to xyz mob. Ok whatever. If this is a direct buff to stats that can make you more powerful in wvw vs people who don’t have ascended armor then you better get a wvw ranking system and ascended armor in that is earned thru wvw.

People asked for pve progression and this is it. People want wvw progression and this could be it also. Just make ascended armor the new platue and then stop. No gear grind is the reason I even play this game. I dont want to have to pve to be a top contender in wvw.

No names in wvw because they don’t want to make people feel targeted or singled out. WvW is supposed to be “casual” pvp. At least that was the story during development and beta.

As for rewards yes, a flag with your guild emblem on siege you drop, a different animation for stomp skill, just so many things that could be put in that don’t directly effect the combat power of your character. Just things that are cool and show your dedication to wvw and the game in general.

Human nature is to progress to something more, entitlement is cultural. I ranking system is a form of progression, something to work your way towards. Entitlement would be someone demanding the same title or skins with out ever trying to rank up.

Mario vs Mmo? Different beasts altogether.

I also wvw for fun, I’m 80 full geared sitting on gold and badges and karma, I still go out to the wvw maps every night.

I just think that human nature when applied to video games makes people want to feel as if they are progressing even if its only an illusion. With that in mind I think a rank system would fill that in nicely with people being able to say hey look at my armor skin or title, look at what I have accomplished. This would also one would hope give people who need to scratch that itch a reason to come out and fight even when there server was losing.

Yeah remove the cap from AoE my hammer guardian would love this, get might for every crit, get heal for every boon, never die and farm people all day.

I played DaoC and War. You don’t want to remove the cap, trust me I would have bomb groups on the field so fast you wouldn’t have time to figure out how bad an idea taking caps off was.

I don’t understand how farming dungeons for armor skins is a measure of skill or rewarding. Different strokes for different folks and all that. Some people like dungeons (and get unique skins for it) some people like achievements and get titles for it. Some people like wvw and as of right now have very little to show for it on a personal level so why not? If it does not compromise balance or game play it should not be a problem.

Developers said they don’t want any carrot on the sticks.

Even without a reward you can already see how fast people jump ship. HoD is a prime example. #1 to #0 in a week.

I under stand this and hopefully a ranking system would be put on the to do list after, guesting (pve’rs need this option), and limiting server transfers to once a week and no longer free or free but with a wvw lock out.

Well I agree with you I have seen a lot of people saying that a ranking system would be a grind, unfair, or power creep.

I don’t know how adding a system that gave you titles, weapon/armor skins, bonus xp from wvw (account bonus), extra silver from wvw, etc. can be considered bad but some do.

Remove Fight to Survive from WvW

My only problem with it is how annoying it is when you are out manned. I got in a fight 1v4, dropped 2 then I dropped, I was able to pick one off and rally but the first 2 guys got themselves back up also. Now it’s 3v1 and I got nothing left. Doesn’t matter that I out leveled, out geared or out played them. I just had no chance what so ever. (Btw I play a Guard)

At the same time with the amount of AoE burst that can be done by some classes with out a rally feature people would just migrate to those classes only. I don’t know about you but I enjoy seeing more then longbow rangers, spin to win thief and fire eles in wvw.

I just dont want to have to loot them, it info roaring to die and see six bags laying around you. I’m too busy actualy playing to hit the f key all the time!

My thing with the loot bags isn’t even the loot, leave it in the bags make me spam f to get it what ever. That said, the badges are a currency and should not be something you need to loot like karma.
