The beginning of mounts?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Seven Star Stalker.1740

I doubt it. It would probably be more like a bundle that grants a passive boost while you’re moving, much like an engineer bundle.

That’s exactly what a mount is essentially. It’s a thing you activate that gives you some sort of cosmetic change + a speed buff. Whats to stop Anet from going down this slippery slope? Here’s the progression:

1. kites
2. kites with speed buffs
3. replace kite with horse, keep speed buff
4. increase speed buff on horse
5. copy/paste horse with speed buff on to elephant/mammoth/etc
6. copy/paste previous onto charr steam engine tank
7. copy/paste ad nauseum to all kinds of ground creatures
8. increase speed buff even more
9. add tiers of “better” mounts with extra armor which require grind and crafting
10. add special abilities like merchants riding shotgun
11. add unique mounts that require absurd RNG to obtain (like time-lost proto from wow)
12. add flying mounts

I’m sure if we jumped straight to step 12, people would flip out and rage at Anet. However over the course of 5 years… People would be acclimated to each step gradually, and before you know it GW2 is a freaking circus of crap it never needed because it already works just fine without mounts in the first place.

Assuming the rest happened, I would highly doubt number 12 would be an issue. Keep in mind that WoW, which is really the mount game, is cutting down flying mounts for their expac later this year. And as for GW2, the world isn’t really open enough to enjoy flying mounts which isn’t even good for the game to begin with.

Using them would suck by virtue of being able to fly from one end of the map to the other faster than a waypoint load screen.

I don’t understand why so many people in the community seem to have zero imagination, vision or creativity.

Oh, i agree. Mounts are so cliche… can’t we ask for something new and creative instead?

None of you have provided a reasonable basis for them to not be on the game.

It’s not like people asking for mounts supply any reasonable reasons for their inclusion.

Except none of the reasons have been any more acceptable than those for them.

“I don’t like mounts” Yeah well, some people do. So that’s not a reason.

“Other games have mounts, play those” Other games have quests! And maps! And load screens! And PVP! And levels! Lets remove all those too! Or rather, why don’t people leave for WoW/Tera/Whatever the hell else for those features too!

“Mounts and anti-immersive, clunky, badly implemented, Lore defying” Really? Really now? Show me the proof for where in GW2 Mount use hasn’t been allowed. Maybe no one thought of it yet lore wise? We’ve already had unorthodox mounts on the form of ships in missions, golems, portals/elevators/lift systems and others. And as for anti-immersive, well, what about minis, many legendaries and skins, many NPC joke quotes, tonics and many other features like Candy-Cane weapons and the like? What makes any of those immersive? Find me the line in Lore that says that Minis are actually a in game lore feature, that are central to the story. I challenge you.

“Clutter and clipping” Yeah well, Norn and Charr can do that solely from existing so the last thing on your mind should be mounts when two races cause that issue already.

“We already have waypoints” right, so let’s remove speed boosting abilities and stuff that grants swiftness.

The only basis I’ve seen is, “There’s too many things ANet needs to do first”, which doesn’t really disqualify them, rather, it just sets back their prioritisation. In terms of reasoning for removing them, there is nothing stopping ANet from implementing them aside from, “We don’t want to” or “It’d require more resources than it’s worth”, the latter of which I can sort of understand I guess.

If you want to play that card. I got one better.

I have yet to read one good or compelling reason to add them. NOT a single one. The game was built around not needing them. Sorry.

My issue is that people say, “No we don’t want mounts, nobody likes them, they suck, they’re bad” for reasons equally silly as asking for them. Asking for them however gets away with it because there’s no harm in simply asking. If you’re going to say no, however, provide a reasonable basis as to why. Imagine what this game would be like if everything was decided on what forumers did and didn’t like? Good grief.

Except since you are the one that wants a change to Gw2. A change that makes some people actually sick to just think about…..

The Burden is on you to give reasons that overcome the objections of others.

I prefer the status quo. I do not need reasons to prefer that things remain as they are other than.." because I Like things as they are."

You are the one that wants a change. You need reasons more compelling than " because..I think mounts are cool.. and I want it."

So your argument is simply the back-and-forth game? ’Kay then.

GET ON YOUR TINFOIL HATS FOLKS! I’m gonna stab at this mounts bubble.

Stop making these stupid threads.

By the way, there is nothing cool about mounts.

Oh, for Grenth’s sake…

You have the broom. There’s your mount.

These three posts have the most thumbs in the shortest amount of time. And the first two are the first and second replies. Compared to the other posts this shows that more people are against the idea as well as the thread itself than for it.

The first 2 mounts (technically animation skins) were a broom and a drill. Like the first Molten Pickaxe, this was a test to see how popular a mount-like object would be and how well it would sell in GW2. Granted they intentionally made them small because they couldn’t predict the amount of buyer for them as well as the amount of strain these players would put on the game if most of them had them out at once. However, unlike the Molten Pickaxe the broom didn’t sell as well. There were not alot of people seen using the broom and and even less people using the drill while the molten pickaxe became a common occurrence. The numbers of players seen using them has dropped ever since.

This at least shows that the players who want mounts are really just a small minority using resources to design mounts would not be profitable.

Another thing I have noticed are the methods of counterargument amongst those for mounts. The biggest tactic being:

“moving the goal post” where one side dismisses evidence given by demanding greater evidence thereby invalidating someone’s point(s). This is just one of the examples:

There is literally no legitimate reason why we can’t have mounts.

I’m indifferent, but all these ‘reasons’ sum upto, ‘Every other game has mounts, and Guildwars2 doesn’t need them because everyone else has one’.

Not only is this counterproductive to coming to a conclusion but it also shows that this is a one-way argument. “Either you give us mounts or we get mounts” basically.

If anything is to be resolved BOTH SIDES have to compromise. However, it won’t be anywhere near a 50/50 split.

How am I invalidating posts anymore than everyone else is?

If someone says “I don’t like mounts”, is that not inherently invalidated by someone who says, “Well I do”. From a numerical perspective, perhaps not, but for a reasoning perspective, yes it does. I guess if you were a dev and you said, “I don’t like it” then maybe it’d be more valid, because you run the game and realistically you don’t need to explain your decisions but otherwise, “I don’t like it, No, f@!% mounts! Go play WoW if you want mounts” – how are any of these answers productive? Or useful? What do they offer to the table?

Now, if it’s a legitimate resources issue, which you explained, fine. I can see that you’ve shown your proof – legitimate proof – and actually gone about taking the time and effort to inform yourself of how Anet’s previous examination of in-game mounts went. Credit should be given where due. Another example of a fair basis for not actually bringing them in is design issues. Is that a major reason? Perhaps not. But with the size of the maps, unless you’re in LP, yeah, sure. I agree. Most classes already have them. That’s a basis to not add mounts – why? Because design wise, they would be useless.

But simply saying, “We don’t need mounts in GW2,” offers nothing to anyone. Why not? “It’s bad” why is it bad? “it’s ugly/u!unimmersive” Yeah well, that’s just, like, your opinion man.

If the goal post is wrong I will move it. Because design decisions should not be made on fickle rationale. Design decisions should foremost put resources, cost/reward, sales interest and those sorts of features into consideration. Because they can always make mounts that fit lore, change lore, make mounts that fit immersion, disregard immersion and more. And where will those fickle opinions on the visuals be when ANet has actually made what they’re designing appealing.

This game would loose so much if devs removed everything based on form over functionality, because form can always be adjusted.

No, ArenaNet never said No mounts will ever be in this game. You’re free to provide the quote.

What did they say, was that mounts would not be a focus at this moment, which was last year. This does not mean mounts will never come. It just means there’s so much bigger fish to fry that mounts isn’t even on the table yet. Which is a fact.

I’m indifferent, but all these ‘reasons’ sum upto, ‘Every other game has mounts, and Guildwars2 doesn’t need them because everyone else has one’.

if ignoring all legitimate arguments means there are no reasons, then, by your logic (if anyone would go so far as call it that), there’s also no legitimate reason to add mounts.
I did post a few risks with mounts and therefore reasons not to add them, but obviously it’s easier to say there are no legitimate reasons against something than to actually read.

Actually, no. Almost every reason I’ve read so far has really provided no reason as to why mounts would be an issue more than anything else. Immersion is already broken from the pony-bow, plush quaggan and the like, and even then, immersion is subjective regardless. Lag is an issue already. Clipping is already an issue. There’s no lore issue, and everyone who says that seems to be trying to make lore fit their mould, not to mention many other things have no lore basis and yet they’re not given a bat of an eyelash.

Things like clutter.. Well, thankfully norn already create the same result from simply existing.

Really the only basis I’ve seen why you can truly say, “Mounts should not be allowed” is because they would essentially be a waste of time and resources, especially in light of things that need to be fixed and implemented.

The reason that no one wants mounts in the game is because it would only make for more screen clutter and lag for everyone. Especially in WvW. GW2 has enough screen clutter going on in World Boss events and big events.
Yeah it would be cool and all that, but it really isn’t worth it

This^

Let’s say they introduced a horse mount…

Inside of 2 weeks there would be 6 more threads on “I wants me some moar mounts!”

Then Anet releases cows.

Rinse and repeat, replacing cows with whatever you wish.

Pretty soon, there are giant rainbow dragonfly mounts, clouds, you name it, running all over everyone’s screen.

And there will be over 9000 threads in the forum about “Why is the FPS down to 2?”

now… can we please bury this dead horse?

Half the time unless your running one mother of a computer, your FPS ends up at about 2. We already have so much lag and optimisation issues. Really if lag is your problem, mounts are the last thing you need to worry about as being a source of it. Perhaps the clutter could be an issue but that’s not the fault of Mounts as a concept. It’s about as valid as saying that "The Dreamer breaks my immersion, therefore all weapons with rainbow-like effects of any kind should be removed from game). Perhaps not as major though, given immersion is largely subjective, but the overall sentiment is the same.

Solution to the GW2 Trinity Design flaw

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Seven Star Stalker.1740

Seven Star Stalker.1740

Why replace one trinity with another, where is the gain in doing so?

Your idea is to replace the trinity from other games that works, with a trinity that might not work, in a game that has no trinity.

What’s the point?

Actually, I do believe that originally that was going to be the case where we had Control, Support and DPS, because those roles were much more flexible and inter-productive than say the traditional trinity which is much more rigid.

The problem was that when defiant and unshakable were made, control became redundant so you never really saw anyone doing that for the major part, support was also kind of pointless because most classes could passively support themselves more than enough to out do active support from other people, and DPS.. Well, look where we are now.

This is not possible due to the way race determines so much of your personal story.

Easy solution. Just make it so that PS details selected in the creation screen mirror a certain combination selected on a different race. So if I pick, Synergetics, VLA, the teacher on the far right and the middle option for the other one I missed, simply, it would reflect on human as Balthazar, Sister kidnapped by centaurs, Street kid, vice versa.

Theoretically it would be too hard to code. I might be a little complex due to numbers, however. And for appearence, they could make it so that when you log into that character or do the change, it gives you an automated sort of “Self-Remake-Kit” or whatever they’re called interface.

Seven Star Stalker.1740

After working my tail off since pre-launch to be able to make two legendaries myself I’m pretty disgusted at them just giving away a legendary weapon.

I bet everyone over rank 50 has pvp’d more than youv’e pve’d and we have almost nothing to show for our efforts in this game.

Anet finally shows a shed of love to less than .1% of the pvp community with a decent reward and people are already whining about it?

Classy.

I disagree.

Real love would actually be a unique skin only available to the top three or so teams in the tournament.

Legendaries should be available, but not as a prize. They should be something everyone can principally work towards. For a proper prize, what should be done is they should make special skins with slight variations for the position awarded to them (1st place should be gold, second place silver and third place a bronze-like sort of color.

That, would be a real prize. Imagine you are one of five people amongst hundreds of thousands accessing this skin? Can you beat such a prestige? Can you be more exclusive than that?

Don’t give the, a legendary. Give them a unique, different skin.

Legendaries by their very design are supposed to be the top of the range skins, but in some sense they’re not supposed to be all that exclusive either in that anyone can build them or work towards them on a whim.

If you guys truly care for the PVP community, don’t give them a legendary, give them a skin that is UNIQUE TO THE TOURNAMENT. Or a skin set that only that account can use (or those accounts, rather).
Giving them a legendary is a cheap and easy way to reward them. I mean how much more special can you be than being one of five people who have access to that skin you have? 5 PEOPLE. IN AN MMO.

Seven Star Stalker.1740

It’s still 5 people who are getting a weapon that symbolizes (or is supposed to symbolize) mastery of ALL aspects of the game….5 people who may or may not have ever stepped outside of PvP.

Yeah because right now legendaries symbolize mastery of all aspects of the game. Like I don’t know, train-farming and all the related and very complex skillsets that you need for it to work.

These forums I swear.

Except what he said is true, and the game backs it up. You need to run dungeons, an aspect of the game, you need to have luck which is a nuisance but pretty much the whole game in a can, you need to do WvW which is another aspect of the game, and then you need to craft a component or two.

The only thing you don’t need to do is PVP to get a legendary, but PVP itself is segmented from the game as a whole on a major level.

So realistically it’s not a false statement.

Except it’s not, and you are “forgetting” some details

Realistically speaking:

1) You need 500 tokens of a single dungeon per legendary weapon. That’s far from “mastering” dungeons. That’s like, doing less then 10 times the same dungeon. Impressive isn’kitten

2) You need 500 Badges of Honor per legendary weapon. The smallest achievement chest gives you 100 badges. If my math is correct, as soon as a new account hits 2000 achievement points (few months of playing?), the player in question has enough for a legendary. So this requirement is easily met by doing only PvEasy, as seen with some of my legendary-bearing guildmates that have never set foot in WvW. Impressive again.

3) These easy-peasy requirements that pale in comparison to the massive gold grind you need for the different gifts are skippable with even more gold-grind. The “mastery-showing” legendary the guy next to you is proudly wielding might as well have been bought with a credit card from the TP

If I were one of the best EU/NA PvP players (and I’m very far from it) I’d be insulted to receive a gift that any bot can get. Not the other way around, like it’s happening in this thread, lol.

You completely missed the point by focussing on numbers. /Facepalm.

But really, on your last point, if that’s the case than I would say what someone else did – Give each place a unique skin for that team. And make it a good skin. I don’t think you can be more exclusive than being 1 of 5 people who got a unique skin that can never be acquired again. Meanwhile, everyone and their mother will be swinging their Twilights, Frostfangs and Moots.

Oh, and they’re TP safe.

I don’t know your definition of “hardcore”, but it definitely does not match mine. For PvE I imagine WoW-like endgame/raids (minus the gear grind), or generally what you see in most high-profile MMOs. For PvP I imagine something akin to LoL, DOTA or Battlefield.

Those examples are not exactly the definitions of niche. They are wildly more successful than GW2.

Yes, that is my definition of hard-core as well. If you remember WoW raiding, it requires hours of your time. HOURS AND HOURS And it’s not like you could simply just decide “hey I hit level cap today, I’m gonna PUG a raid!” and get anywhere. No, you needed to have the BiS gear in order to be viable, meaning you needed to pour yet more hours into maintaining your gear every single time yet another tier of gear came out. That is what I mean by hard-core; and it is directly related to time spent playing. If you only spent 1-2hrs playing, you would a) never be able to raid because you would never have time for it and b) you would universally be considered casual.

You can’t play the game casually (1-2hrs/day) yet be considered a hard-core player.

Actually, that’s not entirely true.

Noone is forcing you to do the next tier of content for such a game. Noone is forcing you to do it while it’s relevant.

I know lots of people in WoW right now who are only doing the current tier of raiding because doing it before the next expansion gives them a mount and a title. THAT’S IT. They don’t want anything else. And getting to that tier? Yeah, it’s not hard. There’s many, many methods to get pretty up in gear level and tier level and the like.

Also you have to keep in mind that WoW’s system (As well as games like WoW) are much different. For example, if you’re a healer, you have less requirements to get into a group than a DPS, because you’re A) More useful and Rarer, as healers bare more responsibility than a DPS, for example.

Really you’re comparing apples to oranges, and even then, it’s not even oranges, it’s more like Apples to Onions.

Yup that is a very good suggestion, anet should seriously consider this.

I think at this point it’s no longer a matter of consider. The system is already there. And people were suggesting this before they even had the Zenith skins >>;

This thread is quite funny, I must admit it.

I honestly think they shouldn’t be rewarding winners with a Legendary. Not because it’s unfair for the people who have got it the regular way, but because of what it actually represents.
It would be much better to give them some exclusive cool skin that, unlike a Legendary, could mean something for the playerbase that values what they do (or give them a bunch of money so they can buy the Legendary if they want, which I doubt). To each his own.

This.

I mean, You’re five people that got this skin. Can you be more exclusive than that..?

So now we’re angry we can’t play Permanent Hairdresser Wars? What the…

I suppose it makes a change from “Anet hates me because of Ascended/zerker/traits/whatever”.

To be fair, that item is ridiculously rare, though. And it has a lot of utility in the way of cost reduction.

Given the game is cosmetic, having an item that allows you to change your hair for free at will at any time to match your look, is pretty OP.

No they’re available from the BL chests at all times, they are just a insanely greedy cash grab rare item drop.

So I take it you all think that there shouldn’t be esports in any game. Because those players like in LoL win millions of dollars for winning a large tournament. Or should you be able to win millions of dollars for not being competitive and playing only the PvE part of the game? Should you win millions of dollars for completing the Call of Duty campaign? You guys are ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. 5 players from the whole entire sPvP community get a chance at a legendary and people think it’s unfair? LOL.

You all have been complaining for ages about a new way to obtain a legendary that actually requires skill rather than mindless farming and now you got it and you are complaining because you aren’t good enough at the game. Give me a break

The first I’m so and so about, but the last part you said is laughable. You, me and the rest of the forums both know well enough that that’s not what people have been referring to. Heck, unless you’ve forgotten, it’s the issue with precursors more so than the rest of the legendary acquisition.

I wish WvW would get even a fraction of this kind of reward.

You get alot more gold, more lootbags, and a new series of really cool looking skins. Dont think you have anything to complain about.

That’s only on the tournaments.

Really, if you’re going to play WvW for profit, you’re doing it wrong. Aside from this tournament, WvW is pretty unrewarding as a whole.

And also, perhaps more serious posts outside the CDI and less joke posts or posts that are just generally pointless.

This is something I’ve seen quite a bit of. Posts in threads that are just praise, silly discussions, or minor/visual bugs, while there are very active threads on serious issues that go without a dev response for weeks. Even something as simple as “We’re aware of this, and looking into it” is many times better than no response at all.

If you’re going to take the time to post silly things, which shows that you are reading the forums, then at least acknowledge the real issues being brought up. The message I get from that particular silence is that they don’t want to acknowledge the problem, because that gives the expectation of them actually fixing it. We know they read the forums, we know they see the threads, so there is no reason to pretend they don’t know about the issues. Acting like the problem doesn’t exist is just unprofessional in my opinion.

I think this a major problem personally. I remember in the LoL forums, devs and players would actively debate the mathematics between various items and characters and stats and all the like. And I don’t see as much of that here. Over here we get one CDI and that’s more like ANet says, “Uh huh, sure. We’ll consider it”. Then you have the interview from last year where what’s his face basically answered every question with, “It’s not off the table”.

I can understand ANet doesn’t need to respond to “GW2 NEEDS MOHNTS THREAD NO 49475859”. That’s fair enough. But if you can discuss the Super Bowl which I’d say is pretty much reportable for being off topic, I think you can invest the time to actually contribute and discuss more serious posts as well.

I agree. I haven’t completely left yet, but I’m on my way out.

Their silence and lack of communication is a core issue. The neglect of dungeons and focus on a crappy living story is another part.

Lack of communication? This the only MMO where devs actually get in game and play with the community. I have never seen devs care so much about their game as Arenanet does. You have entire CDI threads with the devs talking with the players trying to better the game. They pop up in every now and then on random threads just to let people know they are listening. Why people keep bringing up communication as a problem is beyond me.

I would have to argue that Anet’s communication is pretty average. And things like CDI aren’t new. When it was playing LoL every so often a member if the Nerf/buff team for the game would ask how the playerbase feels about ______potential game change. Artists would often draw things for the players out of fun. Staff would come in and make jokes, yes, but there would be a lot of serious discussion, even in repeat threads.

I wouldn’t consider ANet to be giving its playerbase the cold shoulder, but it would say that they could be a bit more active. And also, perhaps more serious posts outside the CDI and less joke posts or posts that are just generally pointless.

Fix Lions Arch & Cosmetic System

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Seven Star Stalker.1740

Your LA point is totally subjective, many people love it and it makes the world feel more living. Old cities get burned and others get built. That’s how a living world should be, this is what the MMO player-base have been asking for all the time [ for reference the MMO community is never happy whatever the devs do in any game as the player-base is huge and the opinions are different ].

Regarding your other points about skins, I agree. As a game heavily focused on skin collections, it would be great ot have some kind of a wardrobe where you can.

Not sure about the account-bound things on the other hand, it is a gaming company afterall they want their game alive and players to have something to do. Like WoW is focused on gear, it is focus on skins and looks here, at least you aren’t forced to do it here like you were in WoW as you won’t be able to play content without gear. Now, implementing account-bound skins etc. will lead to less activity from players to build different characters, something that the majority are doing as people fancy trying new profession/race combinations, building their stats and skins to look fancy.

Gonna state the obvious:

How does a now totally empty city which at one time was packed with many people make the game feel more alive?

Just saying…….

Is it supposed to be like that?

Yes.

Your point is moot. If it was supposed to be empty, desolate and unpleasant to be in, then it shouldn’t be any surprise if it is precisely like that.

LS vs Expansions And Is There A Differance?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Seven Star Stalker.1740

Seven Star Stalker.1740

I think the fundamental issue is that the LS only provides temporary content for the major part.

Many of the things I see personally, are descent amounts of content. I would like to think that if you mashed the LS all together, and shoved it into a single patch, it would equate to expansion level content, however because most of it temporary any way, it makes no real difference.

Well said. But an expansion pack would have had the same issue 2013. You only would have had a package of mainly temporary content. At least there would have been an expansion to buy.

Despite all the fundamental differences the big common ground of both concepts is the requirement of a certain amount of permanent components to make a sustainable impact to the game. If this amount is not given both concepts will fail.

Pretty much. The world lives and breathes, and I agree that each patch should be a breath of fresh air.

But Anet should remember that Scarlet and many of the other things that happened to the world, are scars and stitches. And those scars should not be so quick to heal.

The major difference is what I stated in my above prior post.

This game as of logging in today is almost identical to the game that was released a year ago.

Regardless of the reason – that is a VERY large problem.

I would say that’s part of the difference. Sort of the other side of the coin in regards to what I’ve mentioned. On the one hand, the content is temporary, but also their effects are equally temporary.

It’s no different from here, really in that regard. I’m sure many people duck into other games once they get their LS Metas, because really, what more is there to do?
