Dueling in gw2! Remember?

Seven Star Stalker.1740

PvE is about cooperation, therefore I find it counter to the core value proposition of the game mode.

Alas, as stated previously.. use your costume brawl tonics if PvP and WvW don’t satisfy the need.

Never once have I had the desire to pick a fight with another player in the game… that’s me.

I don’t want people dueling around me and confusing whatever is going on in the open world environment. That’s me and that’s my 2 cents.

Sometimes a duel is useful in a Roleplay scene. I think it’s dubious to have to make someone make a custom arena or pre-determine the outcome for something like that. Furthermore, it’s not confusing. If two people with friendly names are fighting I fail to see how you could be confused when you know people can duel eachother. I mean people have been dueling eachother since ancient times. Unless you’ve studied literally not a single iota of any kind of history and watched not a single movie, you shouldn’t be confused in how dueling works on a basic level.

Also, sometimes people just want to duel for fun. Or may want to simply practice their capabilities in a 1v1 environment to test the damage or builds or the like. With ascended about, you can’t really test that properly in PVP arenas anymore.

Really, it’s literally a case of people being bothered by how other people want to play. This won’t affect you or anyone else in your play style, especially if you can just decline any way. Dueling I find generally is important for Roleplay or fun, but it’s not a functional sort of thing. And really costume brawl isn’t very immersive or effective given you’re using costume skills instead.

Who would make a dueling system save that it have an accept and decline option respectively? That would be broken and lazy.

“Think of WvW or SPVP: no longer full berserker would be the go to spec”

wait…… wat? u serious? only rally bots are full zerkers in wvw

The ONLY time u should run zerkers in wvw is if u have a wicked good frontline to cover your butt.
And your example of a full zerker warrior killing a necro and engi is just funny, said warrior would get insta downed if said Necro and Engi knew how to play even a little.

*Seriously, Condi’s are fine as they are, every aspect of the game has it’s pros and cons *

This part I disagree with. Conditions need to be fixed on a PVE level, not a PVP level. T

I think the main problem in Conditions is that they don’t function like regular dots or disables. If you look at other games, a single player has an entire skillbar of different dots. They’re all dots, sure. But they’re identified as different abilities, so even in small groups, you can keep a consisitent damage output on your part because they’re all tagged as individual abilities.

In GW2, that’s not the case, Bleed is universal, as is poison, Cripple, and all the rest. There’s no uniqueness, and as a result, even if you had a bunch of players not even equipping condition gear they’d still be able to stack plenty of conditions regardless because conditions are not individualized as well as true Dots.

My thoughts:

  • The personality system (charisma, ferocity, dignity) could certainly use some love, yes.
  • Sittable chairs; easy to implement, often overlooked.
  • Character description panels, ala LotRO/Eve Online.
  • Character focus; IE, your character looks at selected characters/objects (see FFXIV for an example of this).
  • Emote bubbles (City of Heroes had these, very nifty).

I believe those were suppose to do something originally, but it got left behind on release.

As for the rest, I dunno. They seem like things that should already be in the game. Not to mention, you have codes for emotes from GW1 that don’t work just because the animation was never actually updated for GW2.

The problem is I doubt they’ll really update it openly, or on a mass level. If they do fix these things expect to be done slowly over ages.

So I’ve yet to see anything touched on this. I’m just going to put forward speculation and theoretics. I’ve honestly got.. Little to no real proof per say. But I do have basis.

So if we look back, Tequatl is supposed to be connected to this. What do Dragons do? They eat magic, correct? Correct. I am going to put my money on this;

Tequatl was a small scale version of what Scarlet did to Mordremoth at some point; i.e. She made a minor Ley-line redirection to him, which spiked up his strength and blah blah blah.

IMO all world bosses should have a unique skin set. SB should have Behemoth skins, CoJ should have Icebrood skins (But they ended up as crafting; Same for Destroyer skins and Megadestroyer), Tequatl is sort of already there, Shatterer should have Branded skins, ect.

I really wish Anet would actually make these, instead of these Gemstore junk skins we’ve been getting.

Maybe Mormedoth isn’t the “new” master, maybe. It’s somethign else. Like Abbadon even though he’s suppose to be dead.

Also who is the first “master” for there to be a new one? Lol

I don’t think that’s really referring to a preceding leader for Scarlet or Tyria. I think that’s just a semantic sort of thing. To kind of give this feeling that “There’s a new threat”.

It’s sorta like if I buy a car, I would refer to it as a “New Car”. That doesn’t mean I had a car before. It just means the car is new within the context of how long I’ve interacted with it. Tyria in its current day and age has arguably not interacted with Mordremoth very much, if at all unless otherwise stated (And even then I don’t think it’d be on a mass sort of scale), so it is a new threat/master for the major part to Tyria, realistically.

  • Mini can take on combat role (provide one random boon?)
  • Mini can expand inventory and backpack itself running after you (aw cute).
  • Minis can be dropped in home instance, to give it some more life.

That would be problematic as the main source of minis are the Gemstore. Plus, RNG would kitten people off even more for minis like Tequatl, and on top of that, minis that are no longer available will create even more frustration.

At least the boon part. For the other two.. The third one is great, the second one I’m not sure.

Also. They need money from gem store to keep game alive. You want them to sell pay2win items instead?

Well if you consider the fact that the majority of skins are in the Gem store overall, and that the end game for this game is in skins, looks and horizontal progression, arguably we already are playing a Pay2Win game.

I mean, sure, they’re cosmetics. But cosmetics are the focus. If they sold stats in the stores no one would care because the purpose of the game is to ultimately look nice in your own view and most of the nice looking stuff has a $ tag on it. x:

Seven Star Stalker.1740

Haven’t given a single $ to Arena Net since the release.
If I were to buy gems with real money, where would my money go? In supporting mediocre 1 hour bi-weekly Living Story content I haven’t even touched for 6 months?

They’re worth a few hours if you bother getting all of the achievements. But yeah, about an hour sounds right for seeing all there is to see in this release(and quite a few others). And quite a bit of the time for achievements is spent repeating things due to failures or achievements that are locked till after your first success.

The living story has at least gotten better with the last few releases, in both terms of the story and the content/event design. Unfortunately, the events tend to be added in very broken states that require several days of patching.

Still, the amount of content that’s actually been “added” (quotes because it’s all temporary) over the last year is small compared to what we would expect from a single retail expansion. Being somewhat generous, and giving an average of 3 hours of non-repeat/busy work content per release, that’s only 72 hours of playable content over a year worth of bi-weekly releases.

That is a decent amount of ‘free’ content, but how long would it take you to get through all the content in a full expansion? How long did it take to get through everything in GW2’s initial release? Every zone/heart, all the dungeons, etc. How long did it take to get through the added campaigns and expansion in GW1? Sure, you can rush through the main storyline in GW1’s campaigns, but that is only a small portion of the unique content each game has.

I think the part that does bother me the most with Anet’s statements is that they have claimed to have added an ‘expansion worth’ of content. It’s a claim I definitely challenge, and it doesn’t stand up very well at all after you see the fact that all but an hour or two of that content no longer exists. If a friend that had not played for 6-12 months asked you what was new, how much would you have to tell them about? And how much of that is only a story of events long gone, that they will never see for themselves?

Living story is certainly a good idea, and a good addition to the game. It just doesn’t work when it’s the only addition to the game.

I think they have, but technically they haven’t at the same time because >75% of the content was temporary any way. You can’t include content you can’t even play.

Abysmal Reward System

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Seven Star Stalker.1740

Seven Star Stalker.1740

GW2 needs to move from an RNG reward system to a token system + RNG systems.

So if you do lvl 50 fractals and want your greatsword, they can make it cost 30 tokens and reward you with 1 each successful run, while still maintaining a rare drop rate of greatswords.

The problem is that then you got people who wants RNG for whatever reason.

When I suggested that Tequatl should drop unique tokens to buy his skins and ascended boxes with, I got quite a few replies about how RNG makes the rewards exciting.

I guess across the MMO industry, the devs must be quite confused about this issue overall, because if everyone hates RNG that much, why do raids still operate ona RNG basis for drops in most MMOs?

On this topic, I think different fractals should give different rewards. I mean, Jade Maw is clearly not as difficult as the other boss fractals, and thus is illogical to have it give out the same rewards. Same applies to dredge, and etc.

Because the drops from a raid function differently.

If I go kill Garrosh Hellscream in WoW right now in 10 man normal, he has a certain loot table. 90% of these items are top tier items. They’re not junk or things to just be crafted.

If I kill Tequatl I get greens, greens and more greens with a single rare on top. That’s where the system fails.

Edit: Also, WoW has a Streakbreakers system. GW2 doesn’t. If I got play WoW, after about 5 times of failing to get items I need, it will give me a generically useful item. It may not be optimal, but it’ll be useful. Think of as though you’re running Zerks, and then, after five runs of random greens, you get a Valkyrie or Assassin’s stat-set weapon. In GW2, there are people who have done Tequatl several times in a single day and have had really nothing to show for it, save for their TTS tag and Sunbringer Title – neither of which are Particularily interestingly strange or valuable (No hate intended to Tequatl Guilds by the way when I mean that.)

It seemed like a pretty sturdy argument towards the high-end Fractal community (those at level 80, or even just 50-60+) who were enraged about progression rollback.

“I worked hard to get here!” they’d say.
“But the fun was your reward so it’s okay!” the hypercasuals would retort.

But he’s not addressing that.

That’s why I didn’t address him as an aggressor.

I was more interested in using what he said as a social commentary illustrating how an argument can suit both sides of a debate depending on the current, and as you pointed out, very differing contexts.

Why do so many people hate RNG

It’s more along the lines of people complaining about rng because they don’t get precursor drops.

False.

People also don’t like how there’s RNG in the Cash Shop, RNG for temporary content and RNG for precursors.

Also Ascended gear is entirely RNG based outside of crafting, and to make matters worse, 90% of things that are remotely desirable have droprates that practically seem like they’re below 1%.

Look at that guy for example, who opened 88 Tequatl Chests and got basically mats, mats and more mats.

Being that this is a fictional fantasy game that is not supposed to have much realism (there is magic in the game FFS) I do not see why not. Players should have the right to express themselves visually in an MMO because cosmetics and gameplay is the only thing that matters for the majority.

If a player wants to look awesome with their sweet greatsword and battle bikini then so be it.

Why do so many people hate RNG

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Seven Star Stalker.1740

Seven Star Stalker.1740

Because RNG is badly implemented in this game.

You have everything with the potential to drop anything, but to make up for that, everything valuable has to have an extremely low drop rate. What results is that most things are a waste of time in this game and are unrewarding. You can’t really chase after something or a certain goal, because the distribution of sources are huge, but the equalizer is by making the potential of acquisition basically impossible.

In a sense, most things become rare not because of actual rarity or effort require to get it. They become rare because you’re lucky, and luck isn’t a measure of value.

To be fair, people do leave when there’s nothing to look forward to in a sense.

Giving things for the Playerbase to be excited for is fundamental to keeping them around. If you stay silent for too long, even if you shave the most amazing thing ever, people won’t play between the time they left (obviously) and the time you release whatever, and even then, because they weren’t expecting anything interesting anyway, it’s doubtful they’d really pay attention to anything that’s come in the meantime.

Why I Avoid Tequatl & The Wurm

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Seven Star Stalker.1740

Seven Star Stalker.1740

See, though, I’m not advocating that the Elite Content no longer work for large groups. Under my suggestion, if you brought 150 members of TTS into Bloodtide Coast, the Wurm would be exactly the same as it was now. You’d still get the exact same challenge and difficulty. The only difference is that, on a tiny server that can only muster maybe 10-20 people, the Wurm would be the same level of difficulty, only that his HP and spawns are scaled down so those 10-20 people, if at the top of their game, can still defeat him. The big raid guilds get what they want, and the small servers also don’t get left out.

Oh, and I DO agree that the World Bosses should get a revamp. The ones like the Caledon Wurm and the Maw Shaman just end up as massive HP punching bags when scaled up. They should have more varied fight mechanics so players don’t just stand in a safe(er) spot and mash 1.

Sorry, but I need to disagree here. Scaling down Elite Content comes with various problems. What do you get when you have a boss whose HP can range between two points (i.e. 10,000 HP and 100,000 HP)? You get bugs with scaling, leading to over easy kills.

Plus, what’s the use of getting together 100+ people for a Raid, when you can do it with 15? Anet made these events with the intent of getting players to group up to overcome the challenge together. By allowing smaller groups to form, you would never have a guild like TTS. Servers would all have their segregated guilds running the Wurm. And then, as I said before, you turn what should have been Elite Content, into another Claw of Jormag.

I don’t mind if the scaling was minor, say a difference around 80%. So instead of having 150 people, you could do it with 120. As of now, the scaling might be a bit more than that.

So Elite Content must remain as it is. The barriers to success have to be artificially high, because it wasn’t meant for “everyone”.

I’m sorry but I honestly don’t buy this.

On the one hand people say “OH NO DONT HAVE IT INSTANCED HAVE IT IN THE OPEN WORLD SO PEOPLE WONT BE CUT OFF FROM IT AND CAN ALL ENJOY IT AND BLAH BLAH BLAH” yeah okay. I get that. But then we have people like you (And I’m not saying you’re wrong or really disagreeing with you) who say the opposite; it’s supposed to be for the elite. This doesn’t make sense, and you end up with issues like AFKers, Leachers, the clueless, the careless and all kinds of people in the mix anyway.

It feels like this content has an identity crisis. On the one hand you have it designed for the elite so that only the hardcores can do it.. And you have it in the open world so.. Everyone can do it, and that non-hardcores are welcome to engage in it despite the content not actually designed for that demographic?

It’s sort of the case in other things too, I’ve noticed. But I’m focussed on this specifically.

Why I Avoid Tequatl & The Wurm

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Seven Star Stalker.1740

Seven Star Stalker.1740

Raids seem unnecessarily considered to be some sort of taboo word that no one wants to have or discuss, lest they, -gasp- , mention something well implemented in other games!

In any case. Whilst I have no stance, I will say that GW2 is not designed to cater to raids and the reason in because GW2’s loot table is found on the BLTC. One thing you need for raids, is an enormous amount of items. High quality items.

GW2 hasn’t got that. We’ve got one set of ascended skins from wurm, one set of ascended skins from Tequatl. The rest of the cosmetic progression is in the gem store; the vast majority of it. You need a lot more skins if you have a raid. Assume that Tequatl was made for a 25 man raid. This means that Tequatl would need a loot table of at least that many items that are ascended or precursor quality, and the percentages would need to be equal to the potential classes that can use them and the number of items dropping at a time must equate to about.. I don’t know, for 15 people I’d say 4 item drops are pretty fair? x:

GW2 really isn’t designed for them, overall. Partially because of “We don’t want raids” and partially because it ties back to the loot system overall, which in turn ties back to the fact that most of the game is systemised economically.

Of course, that leads to the other issues you addressed, OP. And things like festering lag and all the rest of it.

Fixing the Zerker Mentality

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Seven Star Stalker.1740

Seven Star Stalker.1740

The problem isn’t that Zerker gear is somehow superior to other gear, it’s just that DPS is the ONLY thing that matters in dungeons and high-level fractals.

DPS also has the side-effect of making things a lot easier thanks to the vastly higher kill-speed.

I recently had the pleasure of doing Fractals level 49 on my Thief. I have 16.000 HP which is quite significant for a Thief.

But guess what, it made no difference whatsoever. Basically anything that hit you was a 1-shot. The Vitality was completely wasted. The most extreme example are the mobs in the Char Fractal where the Mages kill you instantly before there’s even any sort of animation.

4000 extra HP in that scenario made little to no difference.

15% extra Precision however would have.

The appeal of Zerker gear is because of stupid game-design and its obsession with instant-gibs. No amount of stat shuffling is going to change that.

That’s why every PvE class guide is basically about how to maximize your DPS/group DPS.

This is arguably not entirely true. Zerks works because it has the best stat-synergy. It give you damage, increases your critical damage and increases your chance to critically damage someone overall. It’s the most self rewarding stat-set in the game.

Meanwhile, condition damage is pretty stronk in PVP but say you use condition damage in PVE and enjoy being the laughing stock of anyone remotely serious about this game.

Is GW2 Fun Yet?

To answer;

Not really (At least for me). The temporary nature of the mass of the content means that yes, whilst content has been added, the bulk just.. Goes away. There’s the dubiously implemented Ascended gear, which is dubiously implemented no doubt. There’s lots of zerging content in fact there really is hardly any content that isn’t zerging content. Apparently we’re getting a big content patch in March, however what the actual contents are is kinda up in the air. Also there’s a WvW season 2 coming soon, or w/e new name they gave it.

I find I can’t really motivate myself to log in, I guess. But that’s just me.

Is this game popular?

please ignore the first respond. It is well known that Blizzard is giving monthly access away for those spreading misinformation here.

Too bad for them that this game is much better then their crap AND allready free to play. No need to troll another games forum.

The population is surely not what it was in the first few months. As always there where a lot of game hoppers (the people that play a game for 3-4 months and then move on to the next one). On top of that, there is now more attention to the higher level area’s then the lower level maps.

However, looking at my own server (EU-Gandara) I have seen a steady population for the last 12 months. It’s not changing a lot and there are more then enough people to have fun with. Some starter zones are a bit died out (kitten you Queensdale champtrain!), but you can have a lot of fun.

Lol?

I highly doubt this. And I find it dubious and a foolish attempt to insult the poster. How do you know he wasn’t joking around?

To answer the OP:

GW is reasonably stable at this time. It’s going to jump in the Chinese servers, but that’s on their own servers so that won’t really affect us per say.

In most cases.

No. There’s a novelty associated with them the first time. After that no, not really. It’s just people pressing 1 rapidly over and over till they get their loot.

^—— lol give me give me give me

I just feel like its a lazy way out of the problem on Anet’s part, really.

There’s the issue of statistical advantage, sure, but wait till you have people asking only for ascended in Havoc groups, or in specialized guilds. If you’re a casual WvW player than no problem. But if you play this game for little beyond WvW, this is problematic. Especially given the only way is crafting. In WvW at least, they should make a token system for them if nowhere else.

Lmao did you call them a bunch of try hards? Why would you want to join join them, with that mentality they most likely are the ones that gang up on a solo roamer to beat their chests

Wut?

Does WvW'ing aid in getting ascended armor?

I just love posting this image in threads like these.

Can’t wait to hear people defend the next tiers telling me how necessary they were to improve the quality of the game.

I don’t want BiS, i want a leveled field in WvW, i can’t understand why they thought it was a good idea to have a leveled gearing system in SPvP but not in WvW.

I don’t think WvW was ever meant to be a level playing field. Think of it like a real war, some nations may legitimately have better gear than others, it isn’t level then either.

IMHO this is a cop out. It’s like saying “You have a weak immune system, so it’s okay to be sick” to someone.

It’s likely public relations speak for, “SPvP is for people who want gear to be a non-factor and WvW is for those who want their ‘dedication’ to the game to give them an advantage, no matter how slight.”

I just feel like its a lazy way out of the problem on Anet’s part, really.

Gravelings in AC. Knockdown spam isn’t hard. It’s just horrendously frustrating to deal with.
