No way. If everyone started off on equal ranking, then the start of each season would be a complete nightmare. I started off in Silver 3, and since then have bounced around a bit, clawed my way up into gold 1 ankitten ow progressing into gold 2. I may be able to make into platinum, I may be stuck in gold. But the matches I’ve had and the journey getting there has been great and challenging. As for everyone seeing your mmr badge, just un check “show badge”. Problem solved, now nobody knows your mmr unless you tell them.

Why there is no reason for Vets to play.

Actually the Legendary titles this season have much more prestige than Primordial Legend. Previous seasons was just a grind and was not indicative of skill at all. If you only PvP for the PvE rewards, then sure, you may not have much reason to play much this season after you get all the shinies. For other PvP players though, they ate going to compete for the top 250 slots and earn titles that are worth showing off.

I don’t see anything wrong with requiring a minimum amount of games played by the end of the season to obtain the title and rewards. However, I also don’t see anything wrong with the amount of games the top players have played so far. It’s not so different from my own, and I’ve played a fair bit so far. People do deserve to have lives outside of video games after all. Also, unless you are playing in legend or high platinum divisions, then I highly doubt that the top 250 players not playing a ridiculous amount of games is having some negative impact on your matchmaking.

Reward track changing after completion

No failsafes is a great thing. If for some reason I make it to a division I don’t belong, I don’t want to be stuck there getting farmed every match. I would much rather prefer to naturally drop back down to where I belong and enjoy good matches.

As i said before, i did switch to other classes (engis, necro) – it made no difference.

Well then you switched from one class that cant carry to two other classes that cant carry, duh.

And which class can carry then in your opinion?

Shoutbow Druid has been working great for me. It destroys Dragonhunters, has great mobility, great party support, great reviving with “Search and Rescue”, and pretty decent overall damage. I finish most matches with top Healing/Revives/Damage/Kills.

Scrapper is great and all, especially for revives and point holding, but Scrapper is very easy to kite and the teleport from “Search and Rescue” is vital to getting off resses when your teammates are trying to face tank aoe damage at mid.

Concern about decay

Your effective rating never decays, just your leaderboard rating. So when you come back, you’ll still be fighting the same tier of players you were before.

I believe majority already ruled.

Not a fair ruling considering there has never been a 5v5 only Team Queue. Just a bunch of solo players traumatized from getting farmed in mixed queue.

  • Have Solo Queue and 5v5 only Team Queue.
  • Separate Leaderboards for Solo and Team Queue.
  • Separate Rewards for Solo and Team Queue, providing greater rewards to Team Queue.
  • Do not allow class stacking.

Anet needs to try this for just one season.

The problem this creates though is through the current system, a pve player can come to pvp and afk ranked matches to farm ascended gear faster than he can earn it by actively playing pve. It’s not rewarding players for playing, as they don’t have to actually play. They just have to queue. The fix is simple, reward no pips at all unless you win the match.

Well of course you have a better win rate than this other gold league players. They’ve been fighting hard matches against equally skilled opponents while you’ve been destroying lesser skilled players to get back to where you belong. You have an inflated win rate because your placement matches didn’t go well and so you were a gold league player fighting in bronze league.

I mean, if you wanna complain about placement matches and the soft mmr reset then that is one thing, but you can’t judge whether someone belongs in one league vs another based on win rate alone.

Having an entirely separate queue for rewards is highly unnecessary. All that needs to happen is remove rewards from losing matches. That never should of been a thing to start with.

Condition application could be toned down a bit on certain classes, but conditions in general do not need a nerf. Anet has already decided that condition damage does not have to be all about dealing really slow damage and out sustaining your opponent, you guys have just got to let that concept go. And you’re having trouble with Ele and DH spamming condi? That is on you. If Necro is spamming condi on you then you are getting hit by some very obvious combos. Warrior I can see as an issue but I don’t really feel it is over the top.

It’s probably for the best that they decided to remove the AP. I will never understand why it matters so much to AP hunters that there are a few AP they can’t get, but I guess it is a pretty big deal. And I know for us PvP players, we will forget about this whole ordeal in due time, but AP hunters would of taken this issue to the grave. So Anet made the safest decision, can’t knock them for that.

Matchmaking Question

So I managed an 8 win streak (not including a loss in there since there was a d/c and we didn’t lose any rank). Half of these games were good, challenging matches. The other half were easy wins that felt like they were just handed to us. Still having trouble using the friends list to monitor people’s mmrs. Either I’m going against people in their placement matches, or something is very inconsistent with that system. The first match I get I can normally see everyone’s mmrs by adding them to my friend list, but then for the rest of the matches that night it’s pretty hit or miss, mostly miss.

Well after my win streak I was pretty sure that any game now Anet was gonna hit me with some crazy match to bring me back down. And sure enough, on game 9 I was sent into a slaughter. Score was 500-190. We only scored 190 because they let us have our home. I had one other decent player on my team that was trying to help me pull things together, but our team would just charge right in to things like an army of aoe damage at mid, just 1 by 1, and just keep feeding them kills. They couldn’t win 1v1’s, they couldn’t rotate, it was just a complete slaughter.

So I’m looking at the leaderboards and I can’t find anyone from that match on there. So I decided to take a break and leave everyone on my friend’s list until they showed up, because I was really curious as to how these two teams were stacked. Well today they showed up, and here is where they are currently at:

Red Team 1369/1369/1358/1326/1316 Average 1347
Blue Team 1346(me)/1311/1303/1283/1128 Average 1274

Now obviously everyone’s ratings were a bit different when our match started, but I just can’t help but to see a trend here. I look at this and can’t help but feel like the matchmaking takes 10 players somewhat close in mmr, then places the 5 higher mmrs of those 10 on one team then drops the rest on the other team, or something very close to this.

Guess I’ll just continue to monitor the situation for now.

This happened to me last night. Was on a 7 win streak (aside from a match where we had a d/c and thus lost no rank) and then my next match was just a complete slaughter. 500-130 or something, and we only scored that because they let us have our home point.

If you want to complain about it, complain to your fellow players not Arena Net.

And once again, there has never been a dedicated 5v5 only Team Queue. It has always been mixed, which fostered the hate for Team Queue, which gave us the results we see in the polls. So constantly making reference to the polls is really pointless.

Anet needs to put in the effort to foster a healthy 5v5 only Team Queue. Having rewards exclusive to Team Queue is a great way to do so too.

…what’s pointless is thinking a 5 man team queue only, would suddenly work. You must be insane, or just unknowing of how long these premades actually had to wait for a match. There were 15++ minute queue times in the last system and that system allowed duo/trio teams to play against premades.

Those who say “premades farming pubs..”, gosh, such a laugh.. I’m no vegan grower but i’m pretty sure that getting Fast Games back to back is the definition of farming; – Good SoloQ Grinders were the definition of “Farmers” and they were the ones who out voted 5man premades when Anet set up the polling.

You have no evidence to support your, “5v5 only Team Queue is healthy” theory. Quite the contrary, it’s not.

There has never been a dedicated 5v5 only Team Queue. Never. Everyone’s conception of Team Queue is either long wait times or free pug stomping.

On the long queue times, no kitten there was long queue times! Why wouldn’t there be!? You put in Solo Queue and Team Queue, give them the same rewards, don’t act surprised when everyone picks Solo Queue. People will always take the easiest and fastest route.

Team Queue requires that a player put in the effort to:

  • be good enough that other players want him/her on their team.
  • find other players to team up with.
  • coordinate with those other players.
  • set up and communicate through voice servers.
  • play against more balanced and coordinated teams.

Versus Solo Queue:

  • hit the join match button and hope rng gave you the better team.

So yeah, everyone hit up Solo Queue, Team Queue queue times were horrible, they were merged together which traumatized solo players, solo players in their traumatized state voted to remove Team Queue completely. I miss anything there?

It’s like if Anet had implemented Raids with the same rewards Fractals gave and then were shocked that people were having trouble finding groups to raid with.

And yet there are still people that want Team Queue back, despite the wait times. Also, people flood these forums every day complaining about issues that wouldn’t exist in a Team Queue, such as class stacking and getting stuck with noobs for teammates.

Like I said, Anet should implement a separate Solo Queue and Team Queue, with separate leaderboard and separate reward tracks, and provide exclusive rewards in the Team Queue reward tracks.

I mean take a look at the current system, people are still complaining about duo queuers creating unfair matches against solo queuers. It needs to be Solo Queue and 5v5 Team Queue.

…they aren’t. That’s a really small gap, especially considering that everyone on your team just dropped 10-15 rating and the opposing team just gained 10-15 rating. We’re complaining about team MMR differences of 20 points and within team MMR differences of 100 points now? 100 points is, like, really close to the standard error on your MMR in a 5v5 team game.

If everyone was at their proper placements this probably wouldn’t be as big of an issue, but that currently isn’t the case. My issue is more with understanding why the matchmaking would stack one team with lower mmr and other team with higher mmr instead of balancing it out. Whether the mmr’s are close or not it just makes no sense to do that.

Other issue is getting matched with people that still have volatile ratings or that are still in placement matches, because most often they are not where they belong yet and can have negative impacts on the match for others. Now on that there isn’t really much that can be done to fix it aside from assuring one team isn’t getting stuck with 2-3 volatile players while the other team has all stable players.

Wow, I feel bad for ya there. Yeah, it should be clearly obvious those players do not belong in platinum. So either you got matched with lower ranked players, or the system failed to rank them where they belong. But without being able to see other player’s mmr and gain/loss at the end of the match, it’s just confusing and frustrating.

And omg “I’m clerics”. Like seriously? Your heart had to sink a little as that match was starting.

IIRC, if someone on your team DC’d and you lost, you wouldn’t lose ratings, but it would still count as a match played.

Oh ok, that’s cool. And wow the pvp forums have been blowing up! Only 8 hours and this post has gone from the top of page 1 to middle of page 2!

Another issue I’m running in to actually, anyone know why someone would not show up on your friend leaderboard when you friend them? It’s been very inconsistent for me. At first I thought maybe it just didn’t show some people because they were in placement matches, but I’ve tried adding people that have their badges already and sometimes it shows them on the leader board and sometimes it doesn’t. The whole thing is just very inconsistent. Anyone got an answer to this?

You have to pay attention and look through all pages on the tabs, and yes it won’t show people that haven’t placed.

Yeah, I am going through all the pages but for some reason some people just don’t show up, even if they have a placement badge already.

In my opinion this would be a whole lot easier to see if anet would just show everyone’s mmr with a (+/-X) by each player’s name on the scoreboard at the end of the match. At the end of the match, everybody already has a general impression of their teammates and enemies worth, and the blame is already being thrown around for anet creating unbalanced matches.

If anet showed mmr’s at the end of the match, and players are being matched properly, then that would let players know that they were properly matched. This could cut down on a ton of negative forum posts (not all of course). The only reason I can see for not showing mmr’s at the end of a match is if anet doesn’t want us to see how the matchmaking set us up, and I would really hope that is not the case.

This may be a bit … problematic. If they showed everyone’s rating on a match by match basis, there’ll inevitably be a lot of finger pointing.

Instead, average team MMR is probably enough. The bulk of the matchmaking process makes a list of 10 players relatively close to each other’s rating (within a certain range) and then balances the team to make sure the average ratings are close. If the average team MMR’s are closer, then matchmaking worked to make the match as even as possible. If it’s significantly different, then it failed (likely because that’s the closest possible difference between team MMR’s).

Personally, I want to see both my own skill rating and rating deviation (measure of uncertainty). I would also like to see my own rating adjustment in the match history.

Let’s be honest though, there is plenty of finger pointing with or without mmr’s being shown. And an average may be fine, but wouldn’t really show if average is being offset by someone’s higher mmr who is expected to carry the team.

There will also be more finger-pointing if everyone’s skill rating was visible. Right now, unless you go to extra lengths (adding to friends list, etc), people finger-point without knowing people’s skill rating. It will be much worse if it were visible without much effort.

There could also be less finger pointing if they see that their teammates are at an appropriate mmr. We shouldn’t avoid implementing a useful feature just because we’re afraid of rude players. Rude players are rude, they need no reason to act that way.

Ascended Gear in PvP

Yeah, OP’s request is pretty reasonable. I think the real problem though is granting rewards pips whether you win or lose. What we have now is a system where you can afk in pvp matches and farm for ascended gear faster than you can earn it in pve. That is the real problem here, and I can’t believe Anet didn’t forsee this.

So had a few good matches, both wins and losses, but still the majority of my matches are pretty one-sided. Most recent match 500-280, very easy win. So again I looked up everyone’s mmr, this time before the match started and after.

Red 1323/1321/1295/1289/1288 Average 1303
Blue 1314/1285/1250/na/na Average 1283

Blue lost of course. Then after mmr adjustments…

Red 1333/1331/1306/1300/1299 Average 1313
Blue 1301/1273/1230/na/na Average 1268

So looking at the info that is available it looks like my team was favored to win from the start. The only other explanation I can presume is if the other two guys on blue team who are still in their placement matches were assumed to be better than they are because their mmr is still erratic.

But even if that is the case, red team got stacked with higher mmr players and blue team got two players still in their placement matches. Again, this match was incredibly easy to win, and not entertaining at all. And I’ve been in their shoes, and it wasn’t fair nor fun for them either.

Still, I have had some good matches, more so than previous seasons. So I’m still holding out hope that all of this will settle down and work itself out eventually. In the meantime, is anyone else getting crazy matches like this? If so, just add everyone to your friends list before the match starts and give them a quick nickname like red or blue, maybe followed by a number, then screen shot the guild/friends leaderboard before and compare it to results after. I’d like to see what other people are getting.

Someone needs to learn to time their cleanses better. Also, OP talks about cleansing conditions a necro put on him just to have a warrior hit him more conditions, cause I guess he feels like he should just easily win a 1v2?

tfw you’re going through a rough fight on mid, and the DH that has aoe heals, damage, blocks, and cc, is just sitting outside of the point spamming auto attack.

tfw you need a revive as someone is trying to stomp you and your teammate starts reviving you instead of trying to stop the stomp in any way.

tfw nobody uses the minimap.

The way that Anet has historically used AP are not for limited-pool awards. When they did the WvW seasons, they didn’t have the servers get bonus AP, they just gave them a prestige finisher, and that was enough.

Whether one is able to accomplish taking 1st and getting all the AP doesn’t mean that’s how they should award them. Especially, as has been noted in several threads already, one’s MMR can be vastly different from another’s just based on a couple of games, where, in a perfect world, they’d have the same MMR.

IMO, the titles are enough prestige for any pvper to enjoy.

If a net want to have some special achievement, they could use maybe:

do for example:
500 pvp matches
250 wins in the season
1000 kills

and so on…

everyone will have a chance to get it

If any of the players who make the top 250 actually want the AP that currently comes with it, what is your justification for telling those players that they do not deserve those AP. What changes in your life at all due to these players earning AP that affects your game in a negative way?

Matchmaking Question

Edit: I need help from others to gather more data on matches so we can have a more accurate understanding. Instructions below.

Method: At the start of the match during the prep time, I add everyone in the match to my friend’s list with a quick nickname like r1,r2,b1,b2 ect, so that way I can quickly look at the Friends/Guild Leaderboard and see the mmr of everyone in the match and know what team they were on. I then screen shot the scoreboard, then screen shot every page on the Friends/Guild Leaderboard. Then at the end of the match I again screen shot the scoreboard (since now it has the score and who was in a group) and screen shot the leaderboard again (so I can see how much mmr they gained/lost to see how volatile their rating was). This method will tell you exactly how the match was set up. The more help I get with this, the more we can accurately understand how the matchmaking is currently affecting matches and maybe cut down on some myths and maybe answer questions people are having.

So I am trying to stay positive here, some of my matches have been very fun and close matches. However, the majority of my matches are complete blowouts and, win or lose, that is never fun. It kinda just sucks the joy out of you when you wait around for the match to start and then spend the entire match fighting an uphill battle wondering how your teammates could possibly be this much worse than the enemy team.

Now let me clear up one thing before the QQ comments come in. I am no expert. I play decently, apparently Anet says I’m an average player currently at 1,303 rating. If that is where I belong then so be it. If that is the spot that will give me good matches then I gladly welcome it. The problem I’m having, is I’m hardly ever getting those good matches.

So my first thought of course is that the season just started and everyone hasn’t settled into their proper mmr’s yet and things will be chaotic for a bit. But these one-sided matches kept bothering me, so today after one such match I added everyone to my friend’s list to look at their mmr. I was very confused by the results.

Red

  • Me – 1,303
  • Player 2 – 1,229
  • Player 3 – 1,275
  • Player 4 – 1,267
  • Player 5 – Unranked
  • Average – 1,268

Blue

  • Player 1 – 1,310
  • Player 2 – 1,319
  • Player 3 – 1,268
  • Player 4 – 1,289
  • Player 5 – 1,320
  • Average – 1,301

Now just looking at it I can’t understand why this match was even put together this way. Why set me up like that? Why assume I can carry? I’m just an average player looking for fun matches, I can not carry a team against an enemy team around my own skill level. I mean, granting there is missing info from our unranked guy, my team’s average mmr is equal to their lowest guy’s mmr.

Now the only thing I can hope and assume, is that maybe everyone’s scores are still adjusting by +/- 30 points or more still. If that is the case, which I hope it is, maybe the match was more balanced before the mmr changes hit at the end of the match. So, I’m gonna keep up my project here and take note of mmr’s before a match starts as well and try to pinpoint what is going on. If the problem is that everyone’s mmr’s are just too volatile right now, then I guess the best course of action is just to stop playing for a few weeks. It sucks, but what else can I do?

Let’s get back to basics. AP stands for Achievement Points.

So what you’re saying is, that is it unfair to give achievement points to someone who finishes the season in the top 250 players, and actually worked hard to be at the top, because you cannot?

How fair is that?

It doesn’t matter if you have a higher win rate. If you are winning against easier opponents, your win rate may be higher but that doesn’t mean you are on the same skill level of someone fighting much more difficult opponents with a lower win rate.

The first times before this latest match, I added people to my friend list every time after a defeat, none of them was even 600 rating meaning they were all still doing placement rating…but I’m already 1400 rating

What? Pre placement everyone is at 1200. I don’t think it’s possible to have sub 600 rating even if you lost all placement matches.

Everyone isn’t at 1200 unless you’re a new player. They only did a soft reset. And if your placement matches do not go well, you could very well end up starting out at 600 in bronze, just like others can start out in platinum.

Or you can adapt and encourage Anet to keep this system and introduce a 3+ man queue. That’ll work well too once these great changes bring back more players.

Not well said at all. Are you guys reading? When we talk about wanting a team queue, we want a 5v5 only Team Queue, separate from Solo/Duo Queue. Nobody gives a kitten about stomping pug groups, so stop bringing that up already when it has nothing to do with the goals of this thread.

Yeah, pretty sure people that want a Team Queue want it to be a 5v5 only Team Queue. Not sure why everyone is against a completely separate Team Queue.

I’ve been using the Deadshot Amulet on the typical Flamethrower Condi build and it’s been working great. Went from I believe 15k health to 21k. Feels like it makes more of a difference in my survival than the toughness I previously had did.

Amen to that. I lost 30 points because I got teamed up with a group that just did not want to play that match. They just sat in map chat joking around about it, end score was about 20-500. And yet my score gets punished due to the other 4 random people on my team that I have no control of. Solo/Duo Queue is fine for casual players and all, but let players that want to be competitive have their own 5v5 only Team Queue.

Well it is as skilled based as a solo queue ever will be. I mean, it’s a 5v5 team game with only solo/duo queue, you can’t account for class composition nor skill of the other 3-4 members of your team. Anet also said they’re not at a point where they can fairly factor in individual contribution into your mmr changes. So basically it is the mmr of your team vs mmr of enemy team, either you win or lose, and based on mmr variances you will go up or down so many points.

It is actually a much better system this season, just give it time to settle. Things always start off chaotic at the beginning of a season. My only gripe this season is the lack of a team queue.
