We’re working on this right now. Hopefully it will be available in the next PvP drop.
One thing to keep in mind is we perform matching based on a Glicko v2 rating, not player rank. So even though higher ranked players also tend to have a higher rating, it isn’t always the case.

I wrote a simulator to test several different ways of solving the problem, one of which is the way you suggested, so I’m glad we’re on the same page.While that method improved things it also tends to weigh the match in favor of the first team. The current iteration we’re working on now is very similar, but greatly reduces the bias.
How about making a system that matches people the same way it works with picks on mobas?
so, a 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 example would become:
Team 1: 10, 7, 6, 3, 2 (28)
Team 2: 9, 8, 5, 4, 1 (27)
I don’t think you can get more balanced than this, honestly.

But what’s truly bad is how the consequences of the match were completely opposite to the level of skill play. The elementalist player had to work hard and was constantly under pressure, but because some mistakes were made, it died very easily. The ranger player pratically didn’t play at all, was mostly disabled, and had an easy victory.This is ridiculous. This video is just ONE (bad) example of one fight (regardless of the skill of the players involved, everyone makes mistakes – more so if you are playing a difficult class, as you said yourself).
You could do exactly the same (silly) video where an Ele (who doesn’t even need to play, actually) kills a ranger by auto-casting Lava Tomb when the ele dies.
Because the ranger stands right in the middle of it and takes the full impact.

Here is a template for people who want to do the same type of videos:
“Look [INSERT CLASS HERE] is OP because I have a crappy video of me playing [INSERT CLASS HERE] and he pulled that trick that will work once in a million times!”If the Ele had kept a dodge or hadn’t run in the spirit at the end, he would have won that fight. During the fight, on the other hand, the Ranger was CCd for 3s and burst to death – with no possibility of reacting, he had very little chance to win that encounter.
It’s not a big stretch to imagine the outcome of that fight could easily be in the Ele’s favour – without changing anything to the ele and ranger builds shown in the video.
I bet that if we were to redo the same fight again and again between those two players, ele would win 80% of the fights.
So, “skilled ele who made a mistake” would win 80% of the time against “unskilled ranger”. This is working as intended.

This video proves nothing about anything. Just that you can have some “odd fights” using the existing mechanics, sometimes.
(on the other hand if someone dies to a CCd ranger consistently, they are probably a bad player and deserved to die in the first place)Just pointing out one more time that people who scream at OP’d-ness or balance issues are using the wrong material to do this. The players in general arent obliged to do anything..you just have to take that bet with spvp and invest

if you make mixed teams, both teams will have good players and bad players, regardless of low/high population
as it works now, one team will have all the better players, and the other team all the worse ones <— this issue will be made even more bad with a low population

I believe the class in on the brink of being viable, only needing some relatively minor fixes to the arcane tree, allocation of traits so that it doesnt cut into our build, 40-60 points having to go into water/arcana is not exactly my definition of versatility. Given the latest AoE nerfs and how staff is still on such a horrible state I think that we can remove the learning wheels on AoE and give them a little more power, less telegraphed and more responsiveness and reliability. Lastly maybe you might want to reconsider the whole survivability of eles at the moment, we arent exactly very variable in our build if everyone has to resort to 2-3 cantrips and tnaky stats in order to perform on “decent” or at least equal level to other glass cannon builds who can forsake any kind of defense by simply having aegis/stealth/stealth&clones.
Sure you can say that we are getting our gimmick mechanic “conjures” buffed, but that doiesnt address our core issues, also, everyone is gettting buffed too, making it a powerlevel. This is a visual representation of whats happening;

buffing 1 class each patch to “bring it on par with the others” just increases the power creep.

Mesmer’s clones are meant to make targeting harder (it’s their kitten class mechanic), so that’s why they have the same priority as human players.

Also, if this data involves: 25% of the “raid” being afk on waypoint; 20% lying dead hoping for an hard res (in a fight with a strict timer, yeah dream on) instead of using those frigging waypoint and coming back; 20% spamming autoattacks and only 35% trying to do something useful (use cannons, defend cannons, stack and range dps him down using quickness elixirs)…
Of course the event is going to fail. Every. Time.

I loath this map… when I do spvp, its just in a random join game, so when Im fighting to defend a node, I dont need some mega laser making my job nearly impossible.
Cant even count the number of 1v1 or 2v1’s ive been in and would have won if i hadnt been screwed by that laser.
Certain professions having iWin buttons when in the vicinity of the edge of the map isnt cool either. Nor are the glass floors, although those havent caused me much grief.
You can tell me to just “mind my surroundings” but the fact remains that this map favors certain classes/builds heavily over others, and I dont pvp to play against the terrain, I pvp to combat other players.
It’s all about positioning and if the other player can take advantage of your bad decisions or if you can take advantage of theirs. Every class has a way to knock or pull people off so, I don’t think it’s a big deal but I do believe the Skyhammer should be the one to break the flooring and the walls open for people to take advantage of those rather than people breaking it themselves.
Yeah, elementalists have the same number of abilities to knock people off as an engineer, necro or guardian. Whoever gets knocked out of the map by an Updraft should really stop playing this game, seriously.
Worst map ever is Capricorn btw (for the water of course)

As far as competitive play goes, Conquest is way better. King of the Hill could be fine as well.
Killing someone 5+ times isn’t fun especially when the downed can use stealth/knockbacks and other abilities.
There is nothing more annoying than trying to finish off a downed guardian or a thief…
I usually just dps them down now instead of using the finisher BUT even then that takes too long to kill someone who is downed in that time someone can revive them.
If you have trouble stomping guardians while playing a mesmer, you might want to look at your F4 ability.
Downed state is fine.
Kultas- not sure what you where looking at but I don’t even see you in the top 275. Maybe I am missing something. I watch the boards regularly and I have seen what looks like it balancing out after the initial push. Looks pretty legit other then some go weeks with out playing and keep top 25 spots with no game play. but thats as fair as it gets really.

Elementalist is fun (for me at least) thanks to the attunement swap system
If you can’t handle 4 weapon sets, go spam 1 on a spirit ranger.
Also, we want to be more transparent with balance, so we’re going to be posting a list of the things that we’re working on now, so that you guys can see balance changes earlier than usual.

because it would let you maximize both offensive and defensive stats, no other amulet allows you to do that.
It was always supposed to have that 10s cd, it’s just a bug fix.
Yes, everyone would be picking up the best traits but where is the problem in that? Right now you ‘may’ be forced to take stuff that isn’t very good or not needed because there’s nothing else you want in that tree. If we had free allocation of traits, we would be taking EXACTLY what you need/want and those traits no one uses could get an overhaul from devs because, well, they’re useless. I really don’t understand how could anyone deny this… its not like im asking this to be done for myself but everyone in the game. Build variety per class is below pathetic level when compared to gw1, just sayin.
Free trait allocation was possible in early beta, and it was unbalanced as kitten.
Imagine if you could take, on an elementalist, fresh air as a 10 point trait, or evasive arcana, or whatever.
Or dhuumfire for a necro
Or illusionary persona on mesmer
Or empathic bond on ranger

Just like pretty much any other mmorpg (even Daoc was like that), at least here you don’t get extra powerful by doing such things (instead, you will get laughed at if you’re rank 70 and get utterly destroyed by a “legit” rank 20/30)

If you dc 5 times in less than 3 days, and don’t reconnect, check you internet connection before making 4 more people lose matches (and rating) because you lag/dc.
Drama between top teams? I see no drama between TP/TC and TCG/Denial…
Get the first 10 people who queue and sort them in a 1-2-2-2-2-1 way based on ranking.
Or pool 20-30 people each time and sort them that way.
Whatever you do, it’s better than forming a team of 5 and then searching for another team (which may be much higher/lower rated, leading to unfair matches)
One would expect that all those issues with that map should be fixed before putting it into any rotation.
But again, it’s A.net we’re talking about.

Solo Arena matches allow you to get right into the action of PvP matches in a competitive environment without gathering a full team or finding yourself fighting against a pre-formed group. Solo Arena has its own leaderboard so players can earn rank without affecting their Team Arena standings.Now, I don’t know about you guys, but I’m incredibly happy about this.
SoloQ needed to be separated from Team queuing for a long time, and we finally got the change we wanted. Personally, I think that this is going to be a better indicator of how good a player is, not how good his/her team is. It’s also going to be a lot easier to just go join Solo Queue, without having to worry about ratings dropping off a cliff.

That’s the core of the issue.Solo queing being the casual probably wasn’t the best idea, but whatever… its not like mediocre ideas are new to this game.
Random groups of friends looking to mess around weren’t the issue and never will be… now they get punished… just what a game desperate for population needs…

The hitbox is the same.
Hitbox is the same, but information clarity is not the same.
Stuns and condition particle effects are less noticeable on Asuras because the particles scale with the size of the character model.
Also, harder to see crucial animation (think about guardian’s banish, for example)
