Should be called Runes of Waldo! I can’t find them anywhere!
I was planning on testing them out before actually buying the gear for WvW so I could be sure I like the playstyle, but I don’t see them on the merchant list.

Have they not been added for sPVP yet? Or did they get removed? I know there’s been some debate about their balance and I mostly just wanted to try them out. I’ve wanted to play a Condition Warrior for a while now, but until these runes it hasn’t been terribly viable at all.

WVW needs a Darkness Falls. That is all.

But why?

One reason would be an orb-like objective that doesn’t include a balance-upsetting stat buff.

Also, a public dungeon might be a way to add features only present in PvE to WvW. Perhaps a better way to get Laurels or Ascended items in WvW? Or maybe precursors?

People like to bring up Daoc a lot but fail to realize is that the market has changed, players have changed.

Aion had dungeons that were dependent on players gaining control over fortresses and that did not work out as plan. The reality is that a lot of players might WANT access to it, but wont be bother to WORK for it. Then when their servers gets perpertually stuck fighting a powerful servers players will start whining about the lack of access to it. Then you have other issue of players leaving WvW to go do that instance which defeats the purpose of WvW as well.

tl;dr
Players change from the time Daoc was out. Recent game like aion (i last played aion in 2010 maybe it change), that a lot of players might want to run the dungeon but wont necessarily work to keep it open. Then you have the other issue of fighting a far stronger server and never having access to it.

BTW i am not saying they shouldnt make a exclusive WvW dungeon, but it cannot be linked to something that requires your server to be strong or it will never work in the long run.

This represents my thoughts as well.

If you have more PVE features in WvW maps to lure in more players that wouldn’t normally participate, it’s essentially luring people who have no interest in PVP into a PVP area. With the EB jumping puzzle, I think we all know how that ends.

PVE players don’t typically enjoy PVP, at least not while trying to do something PVE-esque in nature. A dungeon or similar would just result in PVPers camping the entrance to blow up the carebears for lolz and bags. Carebears rage, never enter WvW again, and all we have is more player division and bitter feelings.

Took a break since release, came back to see what is up. Was in the mood for a necro. Use to love them in EQ and other games.. Come to the forum to check out pet builds and stuff.

Holy kittens batman. The aura in this forum makes me want to cry. Is necromacers really that bad?

How bad are pets? I mean I see people saying they are bugged, but they got to be useful for something right? I don’t see them leaving them worthless for this long.

In the forum’s defense, the most recent patch had a few nerfs in it that were pretty unexpected, so there’s a lot of recent upheaval.

In my opinion, the only major bug with minions right now is that Flesh Golem despawns if it enters deep water. They’ve actually gotten downright snappy in their response times with recent updates: I urge you to try them yourself and see how well they do or don’t react to your commands.

its not necesarily a bug , due to that the water skill set doesnt allow flesh golem to live , only got plague form in underwater combat (aka deep water) , so the flesh golem cant chase anything underwater.

It sort of is? All other minions, regardless of if they are equipped on the underwater bar, are capable of crossing water as long as the necromancer is not submerged. They don’t do anything once they’re in there, to my knowledge, but they don’t self-despawn. Flesh Golem can actually run itself into deep water without the necromancer even entering swim mode, and sacrifice itself for no apparent reason.

To be clear, it isn’t about actively using Flesh Golem underwater, since that’s clearly marked by the game as impossible. It’s the way a deep enough puddle to trigger ‘swimming’ mode is a sort of landmine that will instantly kill Flesh Golem, even if nobody else in the fight is underwater.

all other minions are able to be used under water normally…..as in their skills can be equipped in the utility slots…..the flesh golem cannot be equipped in the underwater elite skill slot XD

Yeah, I don’t think you’re reading what I’m saying. It shouldn’t matter if the flesh golem can be equipped underwater, since it’s not about using it underwater, but about making it go across / over water.

If by across/over you mean swimming at the surface of submergable water without diving, it’s still not a bug. Flesh Golem will despawn instantly when the Necromancer enters submergable water, skimming at the top or not. As for the Flesh Golem despawning by running itself into submergible water while the Necromancer is still on land… I have never seen that happen, and I’ve put hundreds of hours into my MM build. Not a bug.

I’m not entirely sure what you’re referring to here… If you’re talking about the EotN storyline, there was far more than just the Norn fighting the Charr, not to mention that the Charr forces were rather divided at that point.

With the Charr, they are way too militaristic for any invasion to work. I mean in your home instance there you can see 3-4 TANKS just waiting.

And yet it’s Siege Golems that take down gates and fortifications in the mists, not tanks. ;P
Which I suppose doesn’t really suggest a whole lot, but I wouldn’t discount golems so quickly.

With Divinity’s Reach while the gate is close to the throne room, it is still guarded by the Shining Blade, who would definitely have a plan in place in case something happened.

That’s being a bit vague though, and seems to be suggesting that the invading Asura wouldn’t have a plan. No one goes into war without a plan.

As someone said above Lion’s Arch is also very well armed.

True, but Lion’s Arch is a city, whereas the others we’re talking about are full-blown nations. Not to mention that Lion’s Arch seems to get a lot of aid from the Pact in times of need to save their butts.

The Pact would be a whole other adversary for the asura to deal with as well though, so the asura would certainly be hard-pressed, there’s no doubt. The problem with these conversations is that there are so many variables and with racial pride abounding there’s a healthy helping of kitten waggling to skew things further.

The Asura would never be able to assault the Black Citadel this way. Why? Ask the Charr NPCs around the Asura Gate. One of them is checking the charges set on the bridge. They honestly expect something bad to come through the gate, and have a means to make sure that they don’t easily get into the city – blow the bridge.

If that didn’t immediately destroy the gate, it would at least make it seriously difficult for the Asura to get enough forces through it, since the gate takes up most of the area on the platform it rests on.

I wouldn’t be so sure. In the asura personal story involving the selection of the Inifinity Cube (or something, can’t remember the exact name and don’t have access to the wiki due to work site-blockers), you open a rift to an alternate reality where the PC has become supreme dictator of Tyria.

Again, since I’m going off of memory I may be missing a few facts. But IIRC that’s more or less what goes down. Whether this alternate reality is missing out on some Black Citadel or what, I can’t say. xD There could be a ton of variables there that don’t apply to our reality, but it suggests that the potential is there.

Did you really just bring up the Troy as an argument in discussion about melee weapons?

It doesn’t invalidate the point that 1H spears aren’t outlandish in the slightest. Javelin, spear, whatever you want to call it. Pointed stick. Calling it a javelin would probably help differentiate it from the underwater weapon. Either way, I think it would be a fantastic addition.

What we should really be afraid of is the day when fresh fruit becomes an available weapon…

And today’s changes have reduced the damage output. We lost an instant 10 stacks of vulnerability that we could throw on before bursting and instead gained a defensive survival skill. Horrible trade in my opinion.

Fair enough, but honestly I can only think of this as a good change. Think of how bad Longbow is in close range. This gives you time to put distance between you and your enemies once they begin to close in on you

Looks like two Minion Masters, a Mesmer and a Ranger… Man, that’s nuts!

I don’t mind all of the pet classes and abilities, I typically run MM Necro in sPVP as my PVP main. But the targeting is what needs a look at. I mean, I was fighting a Spirit Ranger the other day and I couldn’t even touch her. Not because of any level of skill, I just couldn’t get my skills to stick to her because a spirit would kitten in front of her. That becomes I think something other than winning through skill, but winning through exploiting glitches. I know people have told me the same thing about my minion build, and it’s just incredibly frustrating.

I like the idea of a mace, but those skills are way too op for it. Stunning and dazing while still stealthed? Easymode backstabs. A knockdown that also does unload damage as well as bleeds is also pretty out there.

I just rolled mine yesterday, been playing since launch but haven’t really touched the Thief profession. Bought a character slot with gold (owch) and used the level 20 achievement scroll (oof), so I guess I’m stuck with my charr thief xD Not deleting him after using all that to get him.

What traits do you find most useful? I’ll probably be running a S/D stealth build, it seems fun.

Agreed with the post above. I would certainly see a decent chunk of Kaineng being destroyed, simply because of how rickety and highly stacked the buildings were.

And like what’s been said, it’s been plenty of time since then, so they’ve probably rebuilt whatever was destroyed. Knowing how vertical Kaineng seemed then, I’m fully expecting something involving jump puzzles. Everywhere. Like a BotFW but without the aspects, lol.

I admit that it took the Pact many effort and sacrifices to take on Zhaitan. But, there is a saying…… if there is no body, you can’t be sure that it is dead!

They really could replace the 1-5 skills with a new skill bar with punching skills and whatnot, that’d be great! It would be like a moa skill for the Warrior. I think that would be seriously interesting.

Look, if you dont know what profession to choose yet, you havent run in zergs enough, followed existing commanders or have a guild to form a base.

So there is only one viable profession. Necromancer.

Dont have friends? Did you choose the wrong commander profession? Summon your own followers and light up that screen with name tags. The enemy will be like “Oh no theres 20 guys over there, fleeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!” and you’ll be like “HAHAHA I R TEH BEST COMMANDEER EVAR!!!”

That… does not work that way, lol.

But more on topic, any profession will work just fine. I would go for the toon you’re most survivable with of course, because your direction is what determines how the battle will go. If you’re dead… not so easy to command.

You don’t HAVE to do PvE to get these skins. You do get achievement points from PvP. You just will get them faster if you do both… just like PvErs will get them faster if THEY do PvP dailys too.

I fail to see what all the huff n puff is about, it’s just skins.

Terror hasn’t changed. Its always done the same damage it has now since forever. Necros were considered weak and not viable before. Then ANet adds burning (nothing else changed, torment is frankly useless and has next to no up time to matter) and suddenly necromancers need to be nerfed, starting with terror? kitten? Doesn’t even make any sense.

I don’t play my Guardian in PVP enough to be much help, but I don’t really have problems with them on my bursty Necro main. Drop Well of Darkness on myself when I see them stealth. When they appear, I burst the crap out of them while they’re blinded with Ax #2. If they keep their distance, I spam Life Blast at them for 6-7k per hit.

Once I start to kill them they can get away pretty easily, I don’t run too much that can pin a Thief down. But they rarely kill me, so that’s good enough for me. Let ’em run.

MH Dagger’s autoattack chain gives you good LF generation while also providing far-superior single-target DPS. I’d think 4 Necros stacking Wells of Suffering and autoattacking with their daggers would melt just about anything in CoF p1 pretty easily. DS’s autoattack hits really hard now but I’m not sure whether the DPS beats Dagger 1.

If axe auto-attack ever gets buffed, a well build with dagger/warhorn and axe/focus will be great. It’s probably pretty good right now; it’s just overshadowed by how crazy condition builds are at the moment.

Thats the point you don’t need a auto attack for axe… you auto attack is… drum roll DS #1. Literally I’m not joking.

Focus 4 + Axe 2 Burst, Go into deathshroud and 100% crit your next 4 attacks then drop out and repeat burst again (providing you have axe training for cd).

Somewhere in between, I would think. We don’t have much to go on, but there was one interview, I don’t remember the specifics, that said that guardians become guardians because of their faith in (insert relevant cultural aspect) or their desire to protect their comrades. Combine that with the way every profession in GW1 seemed to have a “type” and it seems to indicate that magic of a certain school is accessed through a personality trait or mental facet. For instance, necromancers seem associated with a fascination with death. Some revere it, some respect it, others glory in it, and some are just curious, but the allure is always there.

The general consensus, I think, is that magic is like any art. You can be trained in it, be taught what to do with it, and almost always will benefit from the tutelage of a more experienced mentor, but there’s a certain something that comes of having an innate knack for it, and some prodigies take to it so intuitively they need no training at all.

That makes sense.

I’ve been wondering this for a long time, and I seem to always get a different answer. This may also be something that’s been asked to death, but I hope not… Are individuals born with the ability to use magic and develop their abilities over time, or is it solely something that’s learned? Are some born with a natural knack perhaps, but others can still pick it up with dedicated study?

I suppose to dumb it down a bit with a D&D analogy, would casters in this world be closer to Sorcerers or Wizards, if you understand the difference there?

I remember the asura (I forget his name) who was working on the love potion gone awry (that instead attracted hordes of harpies) being rather sweet on the female charr that was camped with him.

Sorry, that’s amazingly vague xD;
I haven’t been in whatever area that was in quite some time, but I remember noticing that there seemed to be some sort of attraction for the charr.

In any case, I really don’t see why not. I know several people (obviously human, IRL lol) who seem to find other races in the game quite attractive… xD;;

The only thing I dislike about the patch is now everyone will hate on me for playing Necromancer, while I did all along.

I feel the same honestly, but I’m rather protected from that since I run Power Necro xP We did get a nice buff with our wells and the +50% crit chance in DS, but the build that everyone seems most irritated with at the moment is Terror. I fear for interrupts, that’s about it.

Like everyone is saying, you may enjoy Necromancer. You have the minions that all have different effects, and while they really aren’t the /best/ Necro build, they’re slowly getting better with each patch. Where for a long time they almost weren’t playable in PVE, you can get by with them now. It’s a bit of a challenge, but a fun one I think. : D

Another option could be a Spirit Weapon Guardian. They wear heavy armor, but go with something like Scepter/Focus and Staff using spirit weapons… I could definitely see that fitting the bill. Your little “pets” (the spirit weapons) I guess you could call them are all shimmery and spectral, and running with Scepter/Focus and Staff, it feels much more like a caster than some heavy fighter. There are even some sets of heavy armor that look pretty light weight that you can use to lessen the feel of the soldier theme even more.

Did Weakness really change?

The cooldown had to be reduced on all skills because the condition itself got buffed.

Why would this only affect PvP when it reduces all hits?

Anyway, what I did is: Corrosive Poison Cloud + Putrid Mark so a couple of NPCs all had weakness for about an hour. And then I watched the numbers… it was like weakness didn’t change at all. There was no reduction to all attacks, just to half of them. And the “Glancing” indicator didn’t appear on all attacks either.

Weakness doesn’t affect all hits, it has a chance of affected all hits.
Previously, Weakness had a 50/50 chance to cause non-criticals to become glancing blows (50% less damage). All the patch did was make it so that critical hits also have a 50% chance to become glancing blows. It’s not a guaranteed 50% reduction to every hit.

And he’s saying it mostly applies to PVP because not many mobs in PVE actually crit, and the changes only apply to critical hits

So I haven’t had much time today to play around with the new traits and changes, but here is what I came up with:

Note 1: My Soul Reaping GM Trait should be the 50% crit boosting trait, but the build calculator doesn’t seem to have been updated just yet.

Note 2: You will notice the Soldier and Cleric trinkets. I’m looking to change out the Cleric gear when I get the gold, but I haven’t gotten around to CoF farming since my last spending spree xD;; The Soldier trinkets I may keep, just because I like the survivability boost.

What I’m looking for: With this new build, I’m looking for something that can pump out the most damage possible, given my Soldier trinkets.

Current thoughts on the build: As you may notice from my probably weird choice of runes, I’m looking to have high amounts of Might with solid uptime. The three Rune pairs adds to 60% Might duration, which seems pretty significant.
The general idea is to pump up the Life Force bar with Axe 2 and taking hits with Spectral Walk (usually popping this just before going into Shroud to maintain), and then pop the Signet and Blood is Power for a quick 13 stacks of Might. This combined with the Might on hit with Life Blast means that I can typically spam LB for pretty nasty damage. If enemies are in a clump, the Unyielding Blast trait helps spread those lovely crits out which helps the build from being too heavily single-targeted.

Given that I spent all of about 30 minutes poking at throwing this together while eating lunch, there is probably a lot still to be desired and areas where I can improve. My crit rate outside of DS isn’t in the best place, but I’m not sure where to compromise. I know dropping the Soldier trinkets for something with Precision would go a long way, I just don’t want to be too frail.
I’m also not sure if those Runes for the Might duration are the best choice, though they seem fine at first glance I guess… The Pirate set’s MF boost will probably get an eyeroll or two… But hey, I figured the boost from 40-60% Might duration was nothing to sneeze at! xD;

EDIT — This build will primarily be for dungeons and FotM, with some WvW thrown in the mix. Not really intending to use this in sPVP.

Well this topic was supposed to be a fun way of sharing ideas.

Every time someone in here has attempted to counter point or even discuss any of your ideas, you have become irrationally defensive and downright rude. Nothing about the atmosphere you presented was fun nor inspired openness and sharing. If this thread did not live up to those expectations you’ve listed, you have no one to blame but yourself.

In any case, I fully expect to see Cantha content at some point, whether through an expansion or through updates and patches over time.
As mentioned previously, I seriously doubt any sort of Kurzik-Luxon warfare going on, as they were both dissolved and absorbed into the Empire. It just wouldn’t make sense, and if they had resurfaced I’m sure there would be word of it somewhere in the game. Maybe they’ll have it resurface just as the expansion/whathaveyou comes out, but I honestly feel like they’d just be rehashing an old idea. And open world PVP based on faction warfare is something I just don’t see ANet doing… Too many people dislike open world PVP, and we already have essentially that in WvW. I don’t think it would be well received.

I would like to see Ritualist or some sort of unarmed martial artist profession come about. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Build Advice

So, I’ve got an 80 Guardian that I just played with my significant other while we just didn’t feel like playing our mains or our usual alts. I haven’t honestly put much work into him, just bought some basic Exotics that I’d like to use.

Here’s what I have: Full set of un-Rune’d Cleric armor, Cleric G-Sword, Hammer and Staff

Here’s what I want out of him: High durability, high healing power and support for team mates in dungeons (I don’t do speed runs, I run stuff for fun with friends) and damage that isn’t… horrible.

I’d like to keep the gear I bought without thinking if possible, though I’m willing to swap some out. I’m just poor at the moment, so any money saved would be great xP

What sorts of builds would you all recommend?

RNG isn’t a problem. RNG being account bound is. People didn’t mind Lady Kasmeer mini or the Molten mini, because it was available on the TP for the luck-aversed. Hopefully it’s similar to the MF rewards this time.

Agreed! And it says this one is trade-able, so I really don’t see it being a big issue.
It took some time, but ANet is learning from their RNG exploits it seems
