Just find it really funny that they took the down the ability to buy gems right when they hit the highest in about a week..
perfect. thanks for the tips.
I run a full dire p/d build. Off hand is SB for the most part, or D/D at times (I like it for dagger 3 and for the CnD on stomps).
10 for mug, 30 in toughness for the heals, cures etc in stealth. 10 for 50% in stealth and 20 for the aoe bullet spam (helps in WvW for tagging stuff).
Bleeds tick for 1k easy on this build. I like to steal in, CnD for mini unload, then #3 out of there. Kite them with bleeds and torment going.
Cheesy build, but I don’t mind some cheese now and then. I target warriors since they are top dog and kittenes them off to no end when you kill them
It resets RTL and Updraft? I got a parked 80 elementalist and was going to gear her up and go with a zerky build.
Was thinking s/d for it and 30 air for fresh air for what I said above. That seems solid?
Assume you do that then swap over to earth 4 then fire 2?
Since tues 1/21/14 patch.
When I am using staff and fire 4 , if you dodge at the end of Burning Retreat, you will port right back to the mob/player/target at the end of the dodge roll.
Tested it a bunch. Dodge then Burning retreat works fine. Just dodge is fine. But if you do burning retreat followed right away by a dodge you will warp back to the target.
Since the whole idea of the ability is to make distance, this is a pretty poopy bug.
Human male and run the phoenix skin armor for me. trying to find good looking staff skins. I have 5 blacklion tickets.
Anyone like those skins?
Sounds good. I just clutch my d/d build to my heart and afraid to give it up
Maybe scepter/dagger would be a good middle ground. Just not much aoe out of that build for the zerg and tagging folks (outside of fire 3)
Will allow me to get from point A to point B without being ganked all the time?
I really do not mind playing staff in a group to zerg set up .. Normally I am D/D but moved from a dead server to Tarnished Coast. Bigger fights there and thinking staff will bring more to the table (and hey more bags for me) there.
That said, with staff I am worried about just being a really easy kill.. hoping to find something that will allow me to not be “that” worried about being gank. ie ability to get away.
Played since beta. True story. Just about week ago, I logged in one of my original toons that I played right after launch but just went back to. Was a memser. Never liked her but had slots so never deleted.
I have a freaking sycle (spelling?) skin sitting the one of her bags. Was mixed in with other junk like the candy corn and things. I remember logging her back with the first mad king thorn events in frustration and rolling my , now main, engineer.
so I got that now in my bank, chilling..
Longer timer (hour) and 3rd added stat is what I am thinking.
log in and out. that fixes it.
@OP:
A lot of the responses to your thread, do not really answer your question correctly. They are just focusing on the best weaponset in general. In your case, you are a condi P/D build. In that case, you really only have 2 options for your other weaponset, D/P or shortbow. D/P if you want access to on demand stealth/ HS “sprints”. shortbow if you want access to more mobility or are fighting groups.
Great and thanks for the info. I really like d/p as a compliment. dagger 3 is a great gap closer. while I am condition build, Dagger is nice to finish off someone and/or there are times where you are forced into melee (or at least I am).. Was worried I was giving up too much by not going d/d and spamming dagger 3 to benefit from the condition build
I am only level 71 on my thief and play really just WvW on my toons.
going P/D so far with mostly carrion. Will get dire or rabid later no.
The off-set I was running was D/D for awhile so basically dagger 3 gets a big benefit from the plus condition damage.
However, I really like d/p instead for the gap closer on d 3 and the blind field. Feel like it makes fighting in melee easier.
You think I am really gimping myself by going d/p for my melee set for d/d?
Old time DAoC player and a stealthier at that. RR6 something when I left. Played assassin (go albion!)..
anyway, you will be fine here as a thief. Understand there no perma stealth. it is use to set up abilities, heal, get away and reset fights etc. But no running around like we did in DAOC on bridges and playing the stealth game.
WvW is different here, but has similar tones to Camelot. Zerg wise you will no way be as useful as stealthers were in Camelot. We shine here more with smaller stuff, but keep a shortbow handy for zergs and play smart.
Welcome. And I miss DAoC
Not a fan of this suggestion at all. This feels more WvW focused then anything else and more directed at thief perhaps or warriors. Guardian Sword 2 is hardly a awesome escape skill it allows for some kiting but no means a get out of jail card. I can’t believe you brought that up at all.
Sounds a bit biased here not sure what you play but it has to be a build/class with low mobility that you feel would win fights(directed mostly at 1v1’s) if you could force and stay engaged with your enemy. My guess is a bunker of some sort.
Well to fair, the title does say for Non-PvE, so yes it is wvw and spvp. If you read what I said guardian sword 2 is what I meant by the standard of what I was looking for. As in, if there is NO target the ability fails. That is what I would like to see for other gap closing weapon skills.
I am all for skills like blink, lighting reflexes, rocket boots to keep their abilities. Those are on longer timers and you invest a slot for them.
I am speaking of weapon skills. Someone above (sorry typing so missed the name) had a good idea. Make it like ride the lighting then. If you use swoop, whirlwind, sb 5 etc, and NOT hit a target, the timer on the ability is double then normal.
that would be a solid comprise.
Correct.. That is the main reason they run hambow. The huge aoe cleanse area from bow f1 that regens really fast.
I don’t have a huge issue with the hambow alone. The healing signet on top of just makes it op’ed.
Well my point is that there are too many weapon abilities that allow for a player to avoid fights (ie, disengage). This forces players to use those weapons for movement and resetting fights.
I rather see players that, when committed to a fight, have to fight. Not allow player X to start a fight, realize they are going to lose, and just pick up and get away. It is not like there is a huge penalty for death. Force players that actually finish fights.
Change the ability to have weapons with movement skills to only work when there is a target.
Guardian sword 2 for example will not teleport you without a target. thief f1 steal will not work without valid target.
So all the ranger greatsword swoops, and bladerushs and thief shortbow 5, have them removed.
Force players to use them for the intended purpose of gap closers vs other players. Not as get out of jail free abilities to run away. There are too many ways to avoid fights in WvW,, when the whole point really is to fight.
I also echo the desire to reduce the heal per second for this ability. I am fine with it scaling with adrenaline to say 75% of current heals per second.
that forces the warrior to use their f1 or have much better sustain.
WEll not to derail the thread too much, but hammer warrior is broken in an OP sense.
I just accept that until they nerf them more.
I play a trapper ranger. LB/sword and axe (and times dagger) build
It works, for me. That said she is my 2nd “main”. I play condition engineer 80% of the time and I really only wvw. I break out my ranger just to do something different.
For those times (where I mostly hang around towers, camps etc on defense), I enjoy her and don’t have a ton of problem vs most classes outside the hambow warriors that we talked about already.
BIG GREEN ARROWS only exist in Cities and lead you to your story instance, deal with it or do your story.
Actually not true, they happen in open world also. Make a human and when you cross over the first bridge into Queensdale, the big green arrow is there pointing you toward the first heart area.
well focusing on just one condition, you have to 100% sure to cover it up with others. So to be fair, you never really are focused on one.
That said, with my perplex rune engineer, I get a ton of confusion without really trying. Just my pistol 3 and prybar wack is fine. I run elixir gun so that keeps me from running bombs for another set. (I refuse to drop elixir s, since I mostly just wvw)
From just condition stand point , I like engineers better. But memser brings other stuff to the table.
I just find memsers are all over the place. Them, thieves and warriors. Rather play something less popular.
What Zaragoz said. I run a mostly solo roaming build for WvW (really all I do is wvw, but will small group and at time zerg it up)..
Jump all in on the condtions then. Get out of the power line completely.
I run 0/30/20/20/0 will all dire and rabid trinkets. I run perplexity runes also like you. My difference is I run off hand pistol for the most part. shield is great, don’t get me wrong, but I just like the burns on the pistol too much (just me, I understand min/max shield is better and do carry one).
The amount of dps you put out with the rune set and the conditions is just silly good. Get used to working in prybar with pistol 3 and the runes. Just melts folks.
1. better commander tag options/abilities
2. much more improved wxp rewards for defense.
3. add better drops from players. I know this could lead to farming, but put a timer on it or something similar.
4. remove crafting, npc etc stations in home BL. Find you end up with a ton of folks using the home BL as a hub, and not actually helping anyone. Just afk or crafting there.
5. more stealth counters. Allow us to spend wvw points into passive abilities to detect stealth (within a radius and without it being 100%)
Guys should have played Dark Age of Camelot where the best pve xp was out where the wvw was..
Those pve buggers (knowing they were in a wvw zone, but wanted the juicy xp) would go nuts when killed out there.
Basically they felt they had a “right” to play the way they wanted and not die. This echo’s that. Folks want to run around solo and then complain when they get run over by groups or a zerg.
Honestly, does it matter? a few silver and you are back in the fight. Personally I would like a stiffer (as in time) death penalty then we have now.
Played DAoC (but ToA killed it)…ESO aka DAoC2 might be worth looking at though.
ANet with GW2 came very very close to the DAoC Trials of Atlantis mistake with Ascended Gear (spreading the release for gear out for trinkets vs weapons vs armor several months, making it only a minor stat difference and no other popular RvR games in the market at the moment saved them). IMO, it was a huge design choice/player alienation/change in core philosophy gamble and it definitely has seen some impact on population loss.
/tangent
100% agree with you here. It is very similar to what DAOC went thru with the TOA expansion. I am hoping Anet learns and changes direction here. yeah sorry off topic

What is the deal with that <Lion> guild btw. See them in Yak’s BL all the time.
All they do is set up in north camp with siege and have 15 of them trying to kill solo people coming out. That is pretty boring imho
I moved from t1 (tarnished coast) to t2 Yak’s bend and it has been wonderful. I am not a big zerg player and rather do small group and roam.
T2 has been 100% fine, for me. Mileage may vary for others but there is enough zerg action that keeps and stuff change hands, but enough smaller groups and roamers that there is action there. Also not having the massive lag from the big zerg fights.
So for me, was great to move to t2.
yup sorry, brain fart on the tiers. I do that all the time with crafting tiers and stuff. I got a mental block in all mmo’s with tiers levels
You’re in T3, TC is a T2 server, Yak’s bend is a T3.
I dropped speedy kits with the change and really don’t miss it that much. this is from a wvw viewpoint which I do 99% of my time.
I get by fine with the 25% passive and some rocket boot jumps to get around/out of trouble.
That said, I am the odd bird engineer that runs only 1 kit, and not always in it, so losing speedy kits was not a huge deal for me.

Engineer due to how many viable builds they have.
Thieves and mesmers should have a skill to reveal other stealthed thieves and mesmers.
No, it should be Stealthed players can see Stealthed players. That way Thieves become instant counters to Thieves in any 1v1 situation.
However both can still use their Sneak Attack mechanic on each other while in Stealth..
If you played Dark Age of Camelot (had 3 realms and 6 total classes that had perm stealth), it worked this way.
There were factors since stealth was an actual skill line, but still it was really nice. Having an assassin on your team that was waiting near the team healer to counter any other sneaks was viable and fun role.
I use it with my power build (only kit I actually run). really like how it works for me in wvw
interesting.. might try dagger instead of warhorn (for me)
Yeah.. I got the gold.. might make up a knights set and try it out and see
Well the lb/GW is pretty darn bursty to be honest. With rapid fire into stealth into maul you can burst down targets pretty well.
But maybe I did not say what i was thinking. some weapons get more from power builds then other. was wondering if sword scaled better..
Avoid Queensdale (starting human zone) like the plague. You will be caught up in the champion train and it will ruin your experience of this wonderful game.
So make a non human, play the game, follow the personal story line and have fun. Ask for help in /map as most folks are helpful
From a power build viewpoint, I am using LB and GS for WvW. Mostly zerker, some valk also mixed in.
How does power scale (if at all) if I were to move to sword/dagger instead of the GS? right now, I using GW for the movement ability in #3 and #2 after I stealth for a big hit. That said, if I am then stuck with a pretty lousy weapon in the GS till I can swap back to LB and/or timers recharge.
guess you could even use axe in the off hand, but I don’t really like the abilities. Rather have the snare and evade from off hand dagger
My high school daughter and I duo’ed since launch. All various races, so do not worry about that, just meet up after you portal to lion’s arch and go for it.
that said, of our six level 80’s (we have duo’ed up 3 each), we liked these combo’s. now we did maybe 50/50 split between leveling in pve and wvw. Normally first 40-50 levels PvE then off to WvW to level. So our picks keep that in mind.
1. ranger(shortbow, axe/warhorn) / Elemenalist (scepter/dagger): This was our favorite in all aspects of the game. Just lots to do, good combos and the pet for pve tanking.
2. warrior (hammer, mace/shield) / guardian (staff,/GS): 2nd favorite for us. PVE was really simple. WvW was pretty solid also. Warrior carried a longbow for when needed, of course.
3. Mesmer (GS, sword/focus) and thief (dagger, dagger,/shortbow). This was our least favorite PvE, but was our last duo and we were getting burnt on pve at this point. WvW was really strong combo with the mesmer putting up clones and thief picking off the target(s).
Well for PVE lets be honest, it is easy no matter what you play. I have both at 80 and warriors are currently op’ed and simple in all aspects of the game.
that is 100% fine if you like or want that (nothing wrong with playing something if you enjoy that style).
that said, I play my ranger the most because it is the most fun and again PvE it is all really easy.
WvW, the ranger has a ton more issues but I still enjoy it on the ranger
I run 30/20/20 with almost all exotic ’zerker with a little valk on the jewelry.
Have a blast with the ranger in WvW but understand that vs a few classes like a thief, I have issues. But for smaller to bigger fights, he is 100% fine.
My other main (I only wvw) is a condition engineer, so I like the power ranger since it is such a change from that. I do feel the engineer is overall “better”, but i have more fun as a ranger. So I tend to play the power build ranger more often. Might not win as many 1v1 as with my engineer, but have more fun
got a million karma. I am geared up to the level I want to be (ie exotics and enough ascended).
So if I bought a ton of karma gear and salvaged, you think I would make solid gold from the items and ectos?
Mesmer: Ctrl-T to keep target on real player. .. Have to reapply when they stealth. clones do not have food or buffs, so avoid them. Also if you see someone dodging, that is the real player, not a clone.
Ah ok.. rocket boots will work and heal me even as it blows out of the water field?
That would be easier then the shield 4 (plus I like to save that to knock folks off of stomps)..
Thank you for the tips.
I am running healing turret. So the f1 skill shows a small regen and water field. I should be able to hit shield 4, hold and then release to blast in the water heal for AOE healing.
But I can never get it to work..
I like my build (dire condition build.) I run rocket boots, elixir S and elixir gun. Works great. But using healing turret just never seems to give me the burst healing I read about.
ANyone help?
I run power build for my ranger. 30/20/20 with LB and GS. This is for WvW and PvP. Works just fine for me. I hit like a truck and play well enough to position and pretty active in moving around.
100% understand it is not the best build, but it is a fun build for me. But I have 6 level 80’s of various specs so this is my glass cannon one. If you have just one class, you might want to avoid it
so with hybrid do you run torch off hand with axe?
can you get warhorn into the build? I like the blast finisher for big heals.
was thinking axe/torch and sword/warhorn
So what are you using for this build?
axe/torch and sword/dagger?
talking more small scale stuff.
been running power build with long bow and sword/dagger. mix of skills with one trap, one stun break and the regen signet.
It is “ok”. Was thinking of mixing it up and try to find something with axe/?? and then not sure. assume sword/warhorn?
anyway, thoughts?
