Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.
hello fellow kin, in spite of recent topics being created harrying or class, well, the class that i seem to have my natural tallent with, im asking a question of builds, i recently just wanted to get into sword play a lot more, with the release of bonetti’s rapier, such a beautiful sword XD, anyways im mainly p/d sb so this is quite the oposite in my department, learning is rough, but its fun learning, when my internet isnt lagging and i can IS instead of waiting 5 years to port back to my location >_> anyways the build.
im not sure on traits, and the gear choices i was thinking about “benchmarks” instead of going full glassy, or full on bunkery, i wanted to meet certain benchmarks via a mix of gear/ weapons, id mainly be doing this for pve/wvw, spvp is…..bleh to say the least for me XD feedback, suggestions are welcome.
One thing you need to keep in mind when using sword is, you would want that third strike to hit (Crippling Strike) because that’s where a bulk of the damage is.
Now the problem with your build is that, you will never land that 3rd strike with sword — you’re just too glassy (looking at your 13k HP) — you need staying power, in other words, more Vitality.
I personally don’t like the Berserker set, especially when using S/D. So my suggestion is to have a combination of Soldier’s and Valkyrie’s (or maybe Cavs, depending on your play style which stats you need most).
I’d switch the poison for torment, but it sounds cool
Don’t expect the 1200 range though, not going to happen..Torment is only good for condition setups.
Poison is good for both specs, and it’s something Dagger offhand could use (since Pistol OH has Headshot for interrupting heals, it’d be Nice if Dagger OH had something to bring it up to par)
I don’t agree with this that much. Yes, it’s a condition but almost every skill can be useful. For example, If I’m fighting a D/D Backstab thief, using Dancing Dagger when I see the CnD animation starts guarantees successfully putting more pressure on him even in stealth. This is a makeup scenario for the torment part but you get my drift. I’m just saying that It’s impossible to make all sets viable completely. But a torment + cripple could but a pretty nice dent into any melee burst spec. It could also be a really nice opener if they’re running away.
You do realize that most Thief specs for Shadow’s Embrace, right?
This doesn’t really matter to me since Mug is the only useful major in that set. Even if you change it to that, it’s not good enough to take Mug’s slot.
Might give thieves something to slot at 20 point into DA when not running a venom spec. Also, there’s no harm in planning for the future… maybe one day in 4-5 years thief traits wont be so cut and dry, and options might open up.
I don’t know because you either replace Mug or replace a Master slot to have both (which not going to happen since I personally use Combined Training).
Even if they improve the existing one or introduce a new one, I still cannot picture not taking Mug, unless instead, they made Mug a crappy trait. Even in its mediocre state, it’s still the best in slot.
Yeah, but it’s not like Combined training is a “Good” trait, it’s just the best out of a pile of crap.
Yup, I hear you.
Out of 7 weaponsets,
Shbow doesn’t qualify
D/D and P/D’s dual skills are condition based
P/P is a messed up set (though once eventually fixed, combined training has potential to work with P/P)
I use it because that’s the only one that makes sense with my S/D+P/P set. There’s really nothing else there to pick.
So, it’s a trait that at best can help a single skill on 3 out of 7 weaponsets…and even then, its 5% more damage, for a master level trait. Personally, I think 50% more damage to downed targets would be more useful for those times you’re forced to body cleave/DPS a downed target to slow/prevent a res. Perhaps the 2 could be rolled together, to make the trait more viable and universally applicable.
Well, I already get +50% dmg from CS to my target that is below 20% HP, so to add another 50% to a downed player would be broken.
When I select a trait, I based it on the skills I use the most. Since my build is power-based using S/D+P/P, every little % I can get to bring a target down is the right choice for me. I rather have the 5% at all times rather than 50% only when they are downed — but that’s just me .
The pick-up function.
Have you look at your keybinds lately? It’s there. You can separate “looting” from “interacting”.
The problem I have with it though, chests responds to “interacting”, not “looting”.
This post is short and sweet. Living story is attempting to compel people who feel the NEED to play by creating all these achievement and weapon skin filled festivals, instead of creating content that makes players WANT to play.
As soon as people say “wait why am I playing this again?” the entire thing will collapse for them and they will likely not be interested in playing as much, if at all.
Oh no, not the red pill!
A lot of companies have moved away from expansions and have used DLCs instead.
Anet is using a more active “alive” content rather than a static DLC.
Not to mention, free contents, although limited time use only, it’s still free.
There’s nothing alive about their content when with every patch its essentially the same freaking thing for 6-7 months… If this was released as DLC, its anet that should be paying me to ‘experience’ their chore quests with unskippable cutsceens.
Oh it was “alive” alright…then it dies a couple of weeks later (that’s why alive is in quotations).
I think the Krait Witch scared everyone out of the water.
:X
ahahaha, I remember when I was leveling in the area that someone will announce that the Witch is up and many people will reply either “I don’t care!” or “Nobody cares!”
The fight was not a pleasant experience nor rewarding.

If you’re going solo I would recommend Valkyrie and Soldier combo with Hidden Killer.
If you’re running with a decent group, you can go crazy and go full ’serker and Executioner.
IMO, precision is a crap stat.
why is precision a crap stat? or are you just referring to backstab builds?
Precision only gives Crit Chance that you can get from other sources. So having it on your gear or rune is a total waste. It is more useless in backstab builds.
On a non-burst build, all you really need is at least 30% crit chance and you can easily achieve that by either taking a Sigil of percep, Food, or Fury buff.
Like I said in my reply, in a group setting, where you have access with all the nice buffs, you can go crazy and go all out with full ’serker with Executioner if you want.
This doesn’t really matter to me since Mug is the only useful major in that set. Even if you change it to that, it’s not good enough to take Mug’s slot.

There is NO way that a D/P thief should lose to a D/D thief.
Except if the first is really, REALLY, bad, or the latter is insanely good.I believe D/D is only slightly better if you get caught by surprise by a bigger group of people. But if you are aware of your surroundings and constantly move the camera around when you are fighting (as you should do in WvW) D/P is vastly superior.
Moreover, there is a high chance that if the 3+ group of people you are fighting has some decent players, you will miss your CnD at least once and if they interrupt your heal with any form of cc you are pretty much done for.this comes a guy who plays mes and ele?
this i have to disagree, more skills available for use does not mean your more superior. it all comes down on the skill of the person using that thief.
heh, I like it when non-Thief makes up a very unlikely scenario to prove a weak point.
Every thief knows by now that it’s not just the build that makes the profession, it’s the skill of the players who controls them.
For this build you don’t need anything in the deadly arts or critical strikes tree.
0/0/30/10/30 is what is going to be one of the most viable with P/P.
Shadow Arts- Shadow’s embrace, Hidden Thief (Stealth on steal) , And Shadow Rejuvenation.
Acrobatics- Either Power of Inertia, Or descent of Shadows (Of your choosing)
Trickery- Sleight of hand, Ricochet or Bountiful theft, and for the first tier either uncatachable or instinctual response (Of your choosing)Your armor stats should have Precision/Toughness/Condition damage (Being your main stat). x6 runes of perplexity of course.
Pick the sigils of your choosing.
Utilities: Shadow refuge, Caltrops, 3 utility anything of your choosing, and Elite skill any of your choosing. Bassi venom would be preferred.
I started this build about 4-5 days ago. It’s worked well. My armor rating is roughly around 2.8, with 16k hp. Condition damage I can get up to 2k with might stacks, and food. Thanks for letting me share some insight.
Hmm, I like this build and the synergy of Sleight of Hands + Rune of perplex for extra interrupt.
Thanks for sharing, I might even make a set for this build.

Any experience trying this with D/P or S/P?
Just as good, worse, better?
In theory, doesn’t sound very good, no.
You’re just spamming #4 though, right? What’s the difference? The ranged auto basically?
D/P and S/P are just not a good weapon set for condition build, you need pistol main hand for bleed and pistol off hand for interrupt.
personaly i don’t have any problems with initiative, and i do not use any utility’ or traits that boost initiative. You might need those traits on popular P/D build if you spam black powder.
Mind sharing your setup?
Also, I believe you meant D/P.yes D/P is heavy initiative user, i’ve misspelled.
I use D/D // Shortbow . 3 x DB or 2 x cnd +BS + HS are enough for 1 initiative pool, since thief is ment to do burst damage, not constant damage
on shortbow 3x clusters +2 disable shot are also enough betwen autoattacksWhat you just described isn’t going to kill 95% of players, assuming that every single ability you used hit. What If they dodge/block/immune/blind you?
What do you do after that? Run away? I mean, what else could you do, you’re out of Init!
This isn’t mean to be offensive, but I’m getting the impression you don’t really know what you’re talking about.
well now i have 2 choices :
1. yes sir, i don’t have any choices , i die against everybody , when my initiative pool is empty = i am dead.
2. i could start to explain , how to play thief, when to use autoattack , when to burst , and when to use shadow refuge or other defensive utility’s , how to adapt against enemy (diferent play style against more classes and more builds)
because version 2 is too long, and might bring another question like “and then ?” i will pick version 1. No initiative = i run or i dieLike I said, share your setup. Go to gw2skills.net/editor/en , if you wouldn’t mind, and post your spec. I just can’t think of a spec with 0 traits or utilities that affect init regen that wouldn’t suffer heavily from 1 or 2 well times dodges, and I’m eager to see how you’ve overcome this issue.
You really taking him/her seriously even after posting this?

That’s a dead give away.
I’ve been overly dismissive in the past, and at times it hasn’t worked out for me. I’d rather give people the benefit of the doubt, even when it seems obvious that I probably shouldn’t.
Best case scenario, I’ve got more proof for my point and maybe I’ve helped him refine his spec/playstyle some. Worst case scenario, at least I wasn’t a kitten about it.
Well, suit yourself, but the post is a good indication that this will lead nowhere. The build is so 2012 still trying to pull off a burst that the build no longer have. Nevertheless good luck.

IMO, it is more stylish and more useful for the Thief to have it than the Ranger.
Thief can use SB for both AoE and Single target, while Rangers cannot.
If you know how to play Thief with SB, you’ll know how to manage the area of effect and not pull unnecessary aggro in dungeons.
The only thing I never like with SB is the attack speed.
it’s a condi build so switching to S/D or other melee sets makes no sense.
Yes I get that, that’s why it’s painful. It’s like watching Fear Factor, I know what’s the point of the show, but it is still painful to watch.
That P/P build looks fun, but it was painful to watch.
Why is it painful to watch?
Because there were many times that I’m itching to swap to me S/D when watching the video, but all I can do is to sit here and watch. :/
One comment on the youtube also noticed that the build takes too long to kill something and also thinking about swapping to melee weapons.
That P/P build looks fun, but it was painful to watch.
Thanks for the constructive information and the lack of flame
keep it going, many ppl out there are in dire need of some help.
Even tho it seems that indeed S/D thief is not beatable by an burst elementalist at equal skill.
Yeah, trying to burst S/D thief is like bringing a butter knife in a sword fight, the weapon you’re using is simply not useful in this situation.
The only really way to wrangle an S/D is to put as much condition on them as possible at all times. I know that you might take it as an insult or it’s not the meta, or whatever, but this is the most effective way to deal with S/D thief — heavy condition application and condition damage.
I run S/D all the time and if you are not putting condition on me, I’ll simply dance around you until you die. This is the same reason for every burst build, they are too easy to handle.
What I’d like to see is a departure from this – boost base initiative regen, so thieves can actually be effective without relying on initiative regeneration traits. Then tweak the init regen traits to balance things out (“tweak” in this case means “reduce” – I’m not asking for faster initiative regen, just less of an extreme between the speed of traited and untraited init regen), and add secondary effects like every other class has. The secondary effects can be tied to specific weapons (just like every other class) to help limit them and define play styles.
The initiative system as it is is fine IMO — but what I rather see is more Init-discount and Init-refunds. I believe that adding more discount/refund is better than changing values in the init regen since it would be easier to balance and tweak skills/traits in the future.
The main issue here is Anet needs to sit down and really study the Thief profession so that they can really evaluate it and give it the changes it needs. So far, we hardly even get a sincere glimpse instead it’s often an angry glare.
Perhaps I have overlooked some issues.
Yup. This should be in PvP subforum.
On the other hand, Anet actually could have used CryEngine 3 (or CryEngine2) to power their game, and it would’ve looked gorgeous, just absolutely stunning. There was an mmo called “Project D” that was being developed for Japan or Korea (i forget) that used CE3 as a game engine and it was an RPG and had fantasy art style exactly like GW2 but with more detail and richer effects.
CryEngine might render everything nice a pretty but I doubt it can handle rendering multiple player, casting mulitple spell, and running around without it imploding.
One engine that can handle multiplayers is the Unreal Engine, but forget it if you want every thing pretty.
The GW engine is trying to be both pretty and able to handle multiple players doing multiple things.
GW Engine might not be there yet, but they sure are getting closer.
I made 2 characters from the beginning and received 2 gifts each, thus I now have 4 mini Jennahs. >.<’

So, yeah. He’s again talking about “world-changing events” and how the Living story changes the world constantly. Where are these world-changing events?
lol yeah. The changes is not of the “world”, more like “Lion’s-Arch-changing” events. LA had changed multiple times over the course of Living Story.
I wouldn’t categorize LS updates as “major releases” either.
Yup, nothing major with all the LS releases. The events in LS are miniscule in comparison to the rest of Tyria. It’s probably only as big as the Claw of Jormag event.
Where are these events that actually change the state of the world? Centaurs capturing a camp which then gets captured back 20 minutes later?
I actually like the constant back and forth when fighting the centaurs. And the reason it gets recaptured is because we are not actively participating in it. If we station there and guard the area, like the NPCs do, we can keep those camp indefinitely. That, IMO, is a well designed dynamic event.
Also lol @ the “more votes cast than in the 2012 Czech presidential election”. Could they vote as many times as they wanted?
Yup that is a big stretch in their part. It was probably meant to be a joke.
SAB is a joke and it still is. The “teaching how to become an adventurer” idea behind it is laughable since everything in SAB has nothing to do with adventuring in Tyria. It was meant to be a joke and it was a very good joke that I would like to relive it again.
It is an Asuran style virtual reality, that is 100% GW2 related.
My problem with Scarlet is that, if someone is so smart, such a genius and the FIRST SYLVARI to graduate all three ASURAN colleges at the top of the grade – why have we -never- heard of her? Why haven’t we heard NPCs in Rata Sum talking about this sylvari that was smart but ‘something happened’ and she was kicked out?
As the story mentioned, she was stripped with all titles, thus was never mentioned.
We haven’t heard of a horrible murder of an asuran professor who made a machine to freaking see the Eternal Alchemy!
That’s easy. Asura dies all the time in some freak accident so it doesn’t cause an alarm when an Asura dies while tinkering with their machine.
We haven’t heard any ambient chatter about her whatsoever, which makes her place in the world very unbelievable and shoehorned.
Perhaps it’s a taboo among the Asuras to speak of her since it will highlight their biggest mistake in allowing a non-Asura to graduate from their colleges.
The way I see it, if they pool all their resources from release up ’till now and allocate it to develop one large update, like Personal Story 2.0 (with new dragon), then there will be a big surge of players wanting to play the game today.
If they really want players to keep playing month after month, then they should have created a staging point in the Crystal Desert, for example. Then during that month, players will try to establish supply route, gather resources, reinforce the front line, etc. and some Dynamic Event where supply caravan is under attack, some creatures have broken thru the frontline, etc. Then next month we’ll see this staging point evolves into a fort then the next thing to do is push the frontline towards the dragon’s lair. Month after month, new outposts are built, until the final showdown with the dragon.
IMO, that would have been more epic of a Living Story than what we got the last few months.
So really it boils down to one query from me:
If this game is really so bad then why are you people still playing ?
I, for one, am still hopeful that Anet will make something that I personally find to be fun. That’s why I some times come here to complain when something is not fun and why I still play the game — I’m just all hopes nowadays.
The sudden evolution of GW2 from launch ’till now, from something I enjoyed to something I cannot stand playing seriously outside doing dailies, is just sad.
So why am I still playing? Because I’m hopeful — but you won’t see me doing anything significant anymore like dungeons, fractals, WvW, PvP, etc. Living Story just killed the fun out of me, but I’m still hopeful.
I miss my Heroes and Henchmen. >.<’
The RTS feel of the flag system was awesome.
Non-discriminatory racial skill
@OP
When I saw that item I knew that it’s useless with or without the changes to the Magic Find.
I never buy the basic salv kit, so this item is not for me. I still love my Mystic Salv Kit.
Am I the only one who see how overpowered this would be?
I mean AoE dmg+poison at 1200 range from an off-hand? >.<’
This is too good in comparison to SB’s Choking Gas. :/
EDIT:
Don’t get me wrong, I like it for my S/D, but I have to be honest how broken this would be.
Seeing everyone take the stealth side makes me a little depressed.
I would like to see more thieves excelling without stealth.
That’s because of the Backstab, no other reason really.
One Character
Many Professions
(aka GW1 secondary profession system, but as primary)
Yeah the whole deleting character thing is very hard for me. I might never use this guy again, but I can’t see myself ever deleting him.
I actually thought about trying a makeover kit to see if that changes how I feel about the character…but I’m still not sure about that.
Don’t delete, just place them in extended vacation.
To me, Anet retired all my champions (I have all professions at level 80, and yes, they are my champions not characters or alts) after Zhaitan — but instead, they are on vacation visiting tropical places and site seeing molten areas, just to name a few.
But, lately, I feel like playing some other game…
Scissors will never beat rock.
If this is the new meta…then it seems that the anti-condition build will soon rise.
… when pwning face.
You’re build is not gonna work. You’re doing it all wrong. There’s no “pwning face” included.
I’m working on a perma-stealth thief for some general WvW griefing…
See the OP? That’s what it’s all about.
If you’re “pwning face”, you’re doing it wrong.
LOL had no idea we couldn’t grief people while still dropping them. My build is the same concept of perma stealth. At least it allows you to either pwn face or grief. That’s up to the player
The fun is when they think they can beat you if only they can just see you, and watch them spam AoEs, run around, and wasting dodges. I’m telling you, killing them is killing your fun. You have been warned.
P.S.
nice build btw.
Hey. Thanks for an answer. I noticed that berserker gear goes in pair with low survivability. Isn’t it bad for dungeon/PVE thief ?
Less seasoned Thief = no ’serker for you, get some Valkyries/Soldiers.
Seasoned/Veteran Thief = go ’serker all the way.
… when pwning face.
You’re build is not gonna work. You’re doing it all wrong. There’s no “pwning face” included.

Perma-Stealth
- Shadow Refuge
- Shortbow
Step 1: Stack stealth with shadow refuge
Step 2: Using a shortbow, shoot at target using skill Choking Gas.
Step 3: Infiltrator’s Arrow away — far far away.
Your opponent will cry “OP!” since you have not come out from stealth… >.<’
The way I see it, the more opponent you have the more useful Dancin’dags and CnD are.
. . . I may also like Logan due to having “known” his great, great, great, great, great grandparents.
You forgot “not so great” :P
Besides, this story is not well thought off.
She claims, “So much makes sense now. The Pale Tree, the Nightmare Court, Caithe and Faolain…it’s all part of a grand design.”
Yet she believes that she’s not part of that design and can change things however she wants.
“We can change the rules…well, I can. And I’m going to.”
WHAT THE H’?!
If she’s as smart as the story claims her to be, she would have realized that her every action are perhaps part of that “grand design”; that all her actions are preset and predefined and there’s no way for her to escape that fact.
She saw how the system existed before her and decided how she would become a new cog in the system in order to change the way it worked. She is changing the “grand design” (or at least is planning to).
That’s the problem, her vision is contradictory. There’s no way for her to claim to have seen the “grand design” and failed to see that she’s already part of it. Therefore, it would be impossible for her to be this “new cog” unless she recreates reality and the entire Eternal Alchemy from scratch.
i mean she is a total kitten to logan, keeping him uninformed of any thing thats involves protecting her, she build in the rytlock illusion into the watch knight and is in generall kittenish to him for some reason.
You’re looking at it the wrong way. Anise like Logan, but she knows she can’t have him — and if she can’t have him…no else can… >:)
She protects Jennah only because Jennah pays her salary.
Best to describe this story is liken to putting make-up on a pig.
Everybody already know about the pig and making it nice a pretty doesn’t change the fact — it’s still a pig.
So what exactly did we learn that is useful from the story? Absolutely nothing! The pig is still a pig, only prettier with flowery words to describe what happened.
Besides, this story is not well thought off.

But whatever, let the reality in Tyria implodes.
Funny, but if Anet could really predict the future, they could have avoided making some of the apologies they’ve had to make during the past year.
Those apologies was already made pre-release…dum dum dum dum.
I’m more curious why the Asuras did not spy, steal, and sabotage Scarlet. It’s so un-Asura-like.
The whole Scarlet mess reminds of a scene from the movie Megamind.
Titan: This town isn’t big enough for two supervillains!
Megamind: Oh, you’re a villain all right, just not a SUPER one!
Titan: Oh yeah? What’s the difference?
Megamind: Presentation!
Yup, lack of presentation on Scarlet part.
