Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.
Anything with “guild” on it means that your guild will be helping out on purchasing any “guild” related items.
Lol, no. It doesn’t. All it means is it displays the emblem.
Really? So if your guild members aren’t representing your guild, do you think you’ll have enough points to create even a guild banner on your own? How about the guild missions? Guild bounty perhaps?
It is unfortunate that your guild is not as helpful as mine was.
For the record, I now do own a kite that I bought from the gem store.
But still not the same as getting a free one accompanied by a letter of appreciation.
I get what you’re saying, it’s really not about the kite…it’s about getting appreciated for your support.
Anything with “guild” on it means that your guild will be helping out on purchasing any “guild” related items. Just like the commander title, every one in our guild pitched in to give our guild leader the title — and that’s 100 gold.
So for the kite, if each member of your guild pitch in, you don’t have to fork-up the whole cost of the kite since it is for the guild.
With your guild helping you, nothing is really expensive.
Well there was some guys in another topic saying bleed always removed first, and some other guys saying the most recently applied condition gets removed first as well as the wiki. Now you’re saying it’s “random” and I’m hoping it takes out the most damaging condition.
Don’t know who to trust tbh.
I believe the wiki. Bleed is easily applied that it usually ended up to be the most recently applied condition most of the time, so both statements can be true depending on the situation.
As for randomness, that might be just a perception since we can’t really tell which condition was applied first/last.
But unless proven otherwise, I believe that wiki is correct.
…and the other loses most of his credibility claiming that higher tiers offer better fights…
Making false claims about someone else doesn’t build your credibility especially when you’re dead wrong on your assumptions.
higher tiers = less roaming, less 1v1, less 5v5, more zerg v zerg, and more players who believe that when their zerg wins, its because they were good players or gave good leadership.
lol, this statement is so untrue that it is obvious that you;
- have not played in top tier servers
- nor have lead a zerg or joined an organized zerg
- nor have collaborated with other commanders to get the job done
- nor grouped with 5 other players to take supply camps and disrupt supply lines
- nor have infiltrated a siege camp bombarding your tower
zergs never win with more players alone nor with bad commanders. You need both number and good commanders, otherwise you’re just one of those disorganized mob who gets obliterated by skeleton defenses.
But hey, that’s your opinion — we’ll take it for what it’s worth.
Ok without changing the traits, try this one.
Head – Celestial
Shoulder – Celestial
Chest – Soldier
Legs – Soldier
Gloves – Celestial
Boots – Celestial
This set loses 82 power, but has more Toughness, Vitality, Condition Dmg, Heal Pwr, and Crit Damage (+12% MF) — not a whole lot but marginally better.
Curious to see your numbers using this set.
Switch Berserker pieces to Valkyrie and see what you get. IMHO, I’d take Vitality over Precision and that’s the only difference between the two — then you don’t have to Trait for Practiced Tolerance and pick up something else.
The problem is that if you switch the weapons or trinkets in either set, you might as well change them in both, and then the Celestial set will still lose damage and survivability compared to Soldiers/Berserkers mixed.
Sorry, I was actually only talking about the Armor Pieces. Forgot the word “armor” before the “pieces”.
Both Sets use Soldiers weapons, All B/B ascended trinkets except 1 B/V earring, 6x Divinity Runes,10/30/30/0/0 for traits w/ practiced tolerance in both. The only difference is one uses Celestial Hat/Shoulders/Body/Gloves/Pants/Shoes and one uses Soldiers Hat/Body/Legs Berserker Shoulders/Gloves/Boots. What do you want changed?
Ok let me try again, I’ll be more specific this time.
In your non-Celestial set, you have a combination of Soldier/‘serker armor pieces to maximize your DPS output with survivability. If you compare full Soldier or full ’serker to full Celestial, you’ll see that Celestial is way better than either one.
Here’s what I want you to try. You see where you place your ’serker pieces in your build (specifically shoulder, gloves and boots) — now do the same with the Celestial build, but instead, replace the shoulder, gloves and boots with Valkyries.
Then change Practiced Tolerance to either Signet of Power or Furious Retal.
Then compare the DPS.

One thing I like seeing in the video is the “edge of the seat” moments. If it’s a good fight and makes your build shines because you give it your all, then even if you lose, it’s a great video.
If you’re juking with Sword#2, forcing one player to peal out from a group just to die, playing a major part in a zerg even if you die, etc. are great video footage — because from those video, we may learn something.
But if you make a video about 90% of the thieves are already doing with their eyes closed and one hand tied behind their back – figuratively – then yeah, that video is nothing special since it doesn’t show something we have not seen before.
If you watch Jumper’s videos, he uses Sword #2 in a way I personally cannot pull off myself. I didn’t finish watching his video either, not because it’s boring, but because I want to try that play style myself.
I’m not saying that you should play like Jumper — I don’t think anyone can — but he makes good videos — also Yishis’ outnumbered videos are great watch too.
Watch not how they play, but how they make their video and how they edit it.
Switch Berserker pieces to Valkyrie and see what you get. IMHO, I’d take Vitality over Precision and that’s the only difference between the two — then you don’t have to Trait for Practiced Tolerance and pick up something else.
And if you want to make relevant videos, you should transfer server to either one of the top 4. It will also make you a better player after playing against those servers.
Sir Vincent buddy I’m on your server (top 4 yay!), lets run some time and be friends. I’m in EB now in fact.
You’re in TC? That’s great.
Sure we can run some time, I’m usually on later due to work and school.
I hope you understand what I mean with my posts. If you spent hours to put together a video, isn’t it much better to select a footage of a great fight even if you lose than post a win against mediocre opponents?
I watched you move in that video and I know you can do better.
Nice effort on the video but those players you downed are obviously bad players – pre-selected encounters chosen by you to make your build look good — well, it’s not.
First fight was with a 30% HP thief took about 6K damage before going down so based by that, she had around 19k HP. Downing her while she’s damaged only makes you look bad.
Second against a Ranger who never switched to a melee weapon —- makes you look bad.
3rd a staff Guardian sigh — makes you look worst.
… then I had watched enough since it just keeps getting worst. And your play style is so generic. You’re not even using S/D skills properly, especially Sword#2 — I’d say, I’ve seen better game play.
Sorry, just being honest here.
If you make a video winning fighting against the following, I’d be your biggest fan;
1) SB + S/D Ranger
2) Scepter/Focus + Hammer Guardian
3) Mace/Shield + GS Warrior
4) D/P + SB Thief
5) Staff + Sword/Focus Mesmer
6) D/D ElementalistAnd if you want to make relevant videos, you should transfer server to either one of the top 4. It will also make you a better player after playing against those servers.
If he’s playing so badly, then why don’t you give him some pointers instead of just cutting him down and telling him to transfer servers?
Where did I ever say he’s playing badly?
Isn’t suggesting to transfer to a top server counts as a pointer? Transferring to the top server will enhance his play style and improve his build — how is that cutting him down?
Not sure what you’re so angry about. :/
I don’t have to be angry to point out when someone is being less than helpful. I think you’re trolling but for the sake of it, I’ll throw you a bone and tell you how your post was cutting the guy down.
First you tell him he’s cherry picked his video to make his build look better then it is.
Oh please, it’s so obvious. It’s the honest truth. Everyone who watch it will have the same opinion. Why else did he put those clips?
If you think otherwise then please tell. I’m sure you’ll have to be dishonest to do so.
Going so far as to tell him you couldn’t even finish the video.
That’s my honest opinion. If you disagree with me, then please tell your own honest opinion.
Then you tell him he’s generic, he’s not playing ‘correctly’ and that you’ve seen better.
It is generic. He’s not playing correctly. And yes, I’ve seen better.
Ever seen any of Jumper’s video on how to use S/D effectively, correctly, and better?
If not, then you’re just trolling with dishonesty.
Ah, an then you tell him that, on top of all the other stuff, that his video isn’t even relevant because it’s not against a ‘top four’ server.
That’s [not] what I posted at all, that’s your delusion playing tricks on you.
The relevancy here is his build against other players…those players in the video are irrelevant to his build since he’s using generic play style.
The way he move in the video tells me that he can do better and to be able to do that, he needs to find better challenges and one of the challenges is going to top servers.
With that, I’m done feeding you troll.
Not sure what you’re so angry about. :/
I got the same when I offered helpful advice and tried to be nice. Some people just cant take being told things they could do better.
But seriously, I disagree with your statements about top servers. All the good small roaming guilds moved to the bottom, and all the real roamers followed. All the upper tiers have is more people. That doesnt play into skill IMO, unless you consider learning to run from 50 man zergs every 10 minutes a skill.
Ah, but that’s the reason why he should transfer. There’s no benefit fighting another roamer, but there’s a lot of benefit fighting a zerg — it makes him realize the value of toughness and vitality — but the purpose of my suggestion is based around making good videos — not skills — but if it teaches him how to use Sword#2 properly, then that’s an icing on the cake.
If you want things you haven’t done, go out and do them. Don’t act like a kitten and belittle another player for doing something. That helps no one and makes you look like an idiot, while hurting the overall well being of the community.
whoa — time out!
The only one making themselves looks like an idiot is you — and if you look closely, you’re not helping at all, instead just complaining.
The OP ask for opinion, was given, end of story. Take it or leave it really.
Maybe next time, not ask for opinion you’re not ready to accept?

All of these (except D/P thief) can be easily beaten 1v1 by a P/D thief :/
Ain’t that the truth? But it’s a test of his build if he can pull it off.
Nice effort on the video but those players you downed are obviously bad players – pre-selected encounters chosen by you to make your build look good — well, it’s not.

But I don’t take advantage of toughness, I hardly get hit, and when I do I have a low cooldown heal/evade to top me off. So in that case, I have to disagree. I would rather have more crit damage from my gear than more toughness. I do still highly value HP though, as a buffer for condition damage. I have tried it with the “correct” gear and it is not as effective.
You do realize that your heal means nothing if you’re taking serious damage due to low toughness right?
Then every time you heal yourself, you’re not dealing damage making your crit damage useless.
In due time, you’ll understand that toughness and vitality matters a lot — and how much do you need of each to maintain a nice frequency of attacks.
As for now — you speak like a newbie.
i before e, except after c
Except when sounding as “A” in neighbor or weigh… or dozens of other exceptions to the ‘rule’ that in fact, outnumber the ones that actually follow it, making this a completely useless mnemonic.
It’s a reasonably good rule of thumb to get started.
The OP is right though. Way too many people in this game spell it “Theif” and it drives me nuts.
Having “their” and “thief” in the same sentence drives me even crazier.
Whoever come up with these spelling rules ought to retire…seriously.
but when mashing at a boss thief will do more, especially if they got a guardian that tanks it in the front and provide you might, as thief got to sacrifice a lot for these might stacks, if he can change these might skills to somthing else he would get better damage if someone else provided him might.
Huh? If Guardian is tanking and both Thief and Warrior are behind the boss doing DPS while Guardian feeding might to both…Thief loses BIG TIME.
The animation of CnD+Backstab alone puts you behind in DPS every time.
Question: Is that build compatible with your play style?
lol @ 80 pts
Is there even a news of getting more points?
Winning the race is ONE achievement…there are others to be had like gathering all the crystals and using all the skills — after that, go fly a kite.
There is a certain game that allows you to have one character that can change from one profession to another.
So for example, you’re a Level 80 Warrior and you want to be a Thief. Instead of rolling an alt, all you have to do is pass the Thief qualification quest and then you can change your profession – almost similar to gaining your GW1 secondary profession. But, you retain your character level and your Level 80 Warrior , but as a Thief, you’re just Level 1. Then if you need a Level 80, just simply change your profession.
Unfortunately, this is not that type of game but such game do exist.
you probably watched too much what was that called? something something online?sword art? oh kids. why don’t you just ask for all weapons available for thieves anyway, i mean there’s thieves with all weapons across all media.
You.. I don’t… Are you insulting people who watch anime, while also insinuating that you watch it yourself?
Also, two sword fighting is a real thing. It isn’t fantasy. I’m pretty sure the legendary Japanese swordsmen and author of The Book of Five Rings, Musashi, used a sword in each hand as just one example. Though the left one was a shortsword.
Japanese history lesson tiemz!!!
Miyamoto Musashi ?? ?? is the most famous Japanese Samurai to ever live, and he did in fact develop a 2 sword fighting style, Hyoho Niten Ichi-ryu. With a larger sword in his right (main) hand and a smaller sword in his left. It was developed for fighting on horse back, as he viewed that as how real samurais would fight in a war, but none of his famous duels were ever fought using 2 swords together or on horse back.In fact, in his most famous duel, he used the ore from a boat instead of a real weapon. Are you saying we should get a greatsword? !
samurais qualify as heavy armor, sadly
Samurai would be heavy, Ninja would be medium and Shrine Maiden/Monk would be light =3
pretty sure you can get a ninja-specced thief already. and ninjas don’t use greatswords :P
Are you sure?

For example, the phantasm mesmer build is only good in 1v1s and a total joke in big fights.
Whaaat?! Where did you get this misinformation from?
I’m an r41 (PvP) phantasm mesmer. I think I know my build and its weaknesses.
You said “big fight” and that can easily translate to zerg vs zerg where a Phantasmal Berserker is never a “total joke.”
You may know your build and its weaknesses, but obviously you don’t know its strengths.
And with comments you just made, your “r41(PvP)” becomes irrelevant.
I never really care much about individuals in a game company before. To me, it’s a team effort and the work should be credited to the whole team.
But, as I go around doing stuff in Tyria, I can’t ignore anymore my curiosity on who is the artist behind all the things that I am attracted to — mostly the armor designs.
So I did a little research and found this:
http://www.merekatcreations.com/gallery/
Ms. Kristen Perry designed all the armor sets that I find very attractive and creative. I remember her from the Sylvari video but didn’t realize that she designed a lot of other stuff including the cute and cuddly Toy Griffin.
So I just want to express my thanks and appreciations to the wonderful artworks.
Thank you Ms. Perry, you have gained another fan.
@OP A lot of your “points” are either really weak or simply misleading.
-What is the thief good for?
The Thief’s role and purpose is defined by good players playing Thief.
The fact that it is not clearly defined is what frustrates other players and rationalizes all the nerfs we’ve received.
A lot of good players playing Thief that they are so good that they can surprise you that some kitten y build actually works it’s because it compliments their play style really well.
Unlike other profession, if you choose a Guardian for example, you are expected to do a specific role because the profession is good at it — that’s very boring.
Uh-huh, yeah, no.
Thief is a mobile roamer in PvP and a combo-field spammer in PvE, plus he can cleans adds fairly effectively with Dagger Storm.
That’s all, it’s very simple and clear once you play a bit more.
Seeing many bunker Thieves in PvP?
Learn 2 Read.

@OP
That’s actually an easy choice – Power all the way. Precision only gives you Crit Chance which you can get from somewhere else (i.e. food buff, sigil).
But don’t join the Vigil as a Thief, we don’t belong there and the Whisper’s medium armor is the best [looking armor] among the three Orders.
The dual skill is a bit easier to imagine, a crossed sword parry, but can thieves legitimately have a spammable parry?
We’re already doing that underwater with Spear #3 so why not on the surface also?

Maces are lighter than swords, small hammers too…
Are you seriously trying to argue whether or not dual wielding swords would make sense in this game, at all?
lol, according to him, Mesmer are stronger than Thieves because Mesmers can dual-wield swords. :P
Uh wrong need at least 200 for an achievement lol
How am I wrong? You obviously don’t know how the market works since you are blindly passing on an opportunity.
It brought back a couple of my friends, so this patch definitely is a step in the right direction.
Good job, Anet!!!
If the waypoint cost is breaking your bank…then you’re not selling your Quartz like you suppose to.
’nuff, said.
@OP
Roll a Human and you get slam with politics in the face.
Roll a Charr…again politics.
Roll any Sylvari…politics.
Roll an Asura…politics overload.
Roll a Norn…politics.
Even in our personal story there’s politics.
So I wonder…what game were you playing all these time?
Well, not all thieves got to be elemtalist in muscle size like, anywhy if a thief trains at strength he would become stronger, simply. Never seen dual wielding thieves?
Thief are the rogue archetype right? in many games the strong ones can dual wield swords, but dual swords is around the limit for a thief. Btw shiro was an assasin (spiriutal ancestor of thief) he did actually dual wield swords…
meh, I’ve seen thuggish Thieves dual wield blunt weapons a.k.a. small maces or small hammers.
30/x/x/x/x – Annoying swordsman
lol yup — the 30pts trait is made just to annoy people.
Efficiency, reliability, and effectiveness in PvE all goes to Guardian.
But they aren’t a cool as Thieves.
Only after hours and hours of playing Thief you can be efficient, reliable, and effective — it’s perfect since this usually filters out bad players from tainting our profession.
Fix – then – Rework
Rework without fixing brings in more things to fix. :/
I think you’re looking for Assassin’s signet where it USED TO grant +150% to damage when activated.
It has been nerfed ever since — or has it?
You decide.
Before:
Passive: +35 Power
Activated: +150% damage on next attack (30s)
Now:
Passive: 180 Power
Active: Deal 15% more damage on your next five attacks. (30 s )
Off-hand Focus please.
I mean come on, Deadly Arts deadly paradox Assassins did exist. As the spiritual successor where is my focus anet?
lol, I want a +5e Spear and Shield aswell. :P
The OP still have a point though.
The fact that it is soul bound, you cannot simply pass down the weapon to your alts. If I re-skinned a Greatsword for example with my Guardian, and my Guardian picked up a better one, the re-skinned weapon is now trash even though my Warrior or my Mesmer or my Ranger can use them.
The HoM skins are account bound and it works really well with “hand-me-down” weapons.
There is a “workaround” to pass down weapons, but meh, too much hassle. Since the skins are available for all characters in the account anyway, why they didn’t just simply made it account bound.
I’m… still slightly confused at what you’re upset about. o___o;
But anywho, I think people would be more ticked off if the failed achievements weren’t locked away not to look at. If they were out in the open I think it’d be rubbing it in more.Imagine having 299/300 holographic minions killed. THAT WOULD SUCK (because it would be in your face).
You just have to bump that one with a 499/500 Crystal Obsessed
lol
If you look carefully, there are currently existing “light” armors with “heavy” looks when it comes to head, shoulder, and hand pieces.
And the fact that these new armor pieces only goes in those slots, your armor can still look “light”.
Welcome to the shadows.:)
What exectly is “thief”? How does their sneak work? I tried out one once, but I haven’t found “sneak” skill anywhere, only few skills that grant invisibility for a second or two, but that just doesn’t feel… sneaky enough. I probably should play more as thief, but I don’t want to waste hours to find out nothing, but disappointment.
“Sneaking” is a combination of stealth and shadowstep (or teleport/blink/etc). Using F1 (Steal) gives you an early access to shadowstep and your beginning heal gives you access to stealth.
Sneaking is not only hiding and creeping; it also mean doing something before anyone else notices.
Your sneak attack activates when you go in stealth, so to sneak an attack on an unaware target, you first go in stealth, press F1 to steal, and auto-attack for a sneak attack (assuming that you are using a melee weapon, you don’t need to get close if using a ranged weapon).
Also, what is their role? I suppose it is damage, but if more detailed? Are they like the most squishies, but most damage dealing class?
It depends on how you build a Thief. One thing to keep in mind though, if you build to deal more damage, you have less survivability. If you build to survive, your damage suffers.
But — with enough experience and practice, you can deal high damage with high chance of survivability. Since Thief has no damage mitigation like Guardians have, we have to use dodge and evade to avoid damage and that requires a lot of knowledge and experience invested in the profession.
Are they only viable at PvP or also at PvE? Can they be anything else, but damage?
IMHO, they are viable anywhere if you know how to play the profession. As for other role, I suppose you can go Venom Share, but that is too limited, restrictive and situational.
And last, but not least, how effective dual guns are? Dual guns are probably the main reason I want to play this class. Swinging a big sword is sure fun, but shooting people is always more fun.
Dual pistols are fun to use, but “effective” will need some context. In general PvE, you can use any weapon set and it will be as effective as anything else, I suppose. But in structured PvE like dungeons, you may want to get familiar with other options. As for other formats (WvW, PvP), you should consider other options depending on your play style.
Most of the time, a lot of party members don’t really care what weapon you use as long as you know what you’re doing.

bleh Rifle? I want an Arbalest for 1200 range please.
EDIT: Reason being, you can’t effectively stay in stealth with a Rifle — too noisy.
Considering the Thief can use magic to stealth (yes they use magic!), i assume they can muffle sound too.
Funny thing about that “magic”, they can’t even make their projectiles travel farther than 1200. So no, that “magic” is unreliable.
Ar-ba-lest! Ar-ba-lest! Ar-ba-lest!
