ok so i run p/d last 2 weeks in wvw and now with the addition of torment on shadow strike i dropped blinding powder for infil signet and scale venom for shadow refuge….obv not as balanced butwanted to see how a duel would go.

first 7 seconds of one particular fight : CND——Scale venom +Sneak Attack——dodge roll his attack——shadowstrike—-steal (2 sec stun 2 boons vigor at 1500 range)——shadow strike——infil signet——-shadowstrike——— GG

this cause in that 7 seconds or so he had:

3 x stacks of vulnerability
8 x stacks of bleed (rounded down as some ended)
2 x stacks of blind
1 x stack of Poison
9 x stacks of wsTorment (550 per sec per stack. 550 more if moving)

fight was over quick….trick is to obviously time the gapclosers same way you would CND/STEAL combo but slightly faster.

idk thought it was interesting.

It’s hard to believe that to be a duel since whoever you are dueling didn’t even try to defend themselves. :/

it was only 1 duel…not every duel ends up like that. but i got luck wher the steal broke his heal and 2 secs of stun is enough time to follow the rest. especially when they dont timedodges right.

Still not believable, sorry. I can’t think of any profession that will simply die in a duel after 7s. I can understand if you down them in 2-3 seconds like how Backstab+Mug combo used to be able to pull off because that way they have no time to react — but 7s without reaction is simply fictional.

Not true. Condition duration also benefits from traits that go something like, “+10% damage against bleeding foes”.

Bleed is so easy to apply that even with 0% condition duration, you can still take advantage of that bonus in damage.

Again, if the condition deals damage, you want it shorter duration but potent.

CnD doesn’t even work properly for me lol. It never grants stealth.

You can’t just spam it. You have to wait for the stealth to wear off, typically after 3s, then use it again. Never use it while in stealth, else you’ll get revealed.

A simple combination of traits like “Infusion of Shadow” and “Hastened Replenishment” will allow you to troll with CnD.

Tactical Strike: stun from stealth

In my build Tactical strike does maximum 2k damage. So pathetic damage with near useless effect for stealth position attack.
Bs 6-7k damage.

That’s an unfair comparison and you know it. Like I said above, you can’t take TS out of context of a Sword/Dagger build.

First of all, you should only go for Condition Duration if the condition is non-damage condition, like Vulnerability. You suffer the loss of damage if your conditions are cut short due to condition duration reduction and condition removals.

Second, compare your build to this one (my modified version of your build);

In this build,
- my Bleed duration is shorter but ticks for 109.6dmg/sec (looking at Caltrops)
- Your build ticks for 106.9dmg/sec

- my Vital shot deals 112.5dmg/sec
- Your Vital shot deals 104.8dmg/sec

- my Torment deals 87.9dmg/sec
- Your Torment deals 80.75dmg/sec

So if your duration is shortened, you’re total condition damage is crippled.

I should slap you for putting 25 into deadly arts in a non-venom build.
Getting 25 deadly arts and grabbing garbage traits just for the condition duration is simply a waste of trait points.

This guy is no narrow-minded that he failed to see the +250 added to power spec-ing 25pts into DA.

I agree that the chosen major traits are awful, but I would keep 25pts into DA.

Your traits are fine, you just need to optimize your gears.

So... how can I beat CND with a necro?

In practice, Necro kills the Thief not by CC or Fear – Thieves kill Thieves – the combination of Retaliation and Conditions gets the job done.

If you spec for the Spiteful Spirit trait (Spite – V), you can go in Death Shroud every time the Thief goes in Stealth. This tactic insures that the Thief’s Stealth Attack (i.e. Backstab) will serve them in a silver platter for you, because after that Stealth Attack, you have them for the full duration of the Revealed debuff.

The important thing here is, even if they didn’t Stealth Attack, it waste their stealth because your Retaliation lasts as long as their stealth. Even if they just re-stealth using CnD like you stated, they still get damage from Retaliation.

Now simply build around this by gearing with Buff Durations, Health Regen, etc.

As for weapon sets, I personally recommend Scepter/Warhorn + Staff vs Thieves. The Warhorn gives you the ability to keep your distance from the Thief and the ability to cripple them even in stealth. It also gives you the ability to chase them down if they try to run away.

But here’s the caveat, it requires a great deal of practice and knowledge on how you would juggle your cooldowns. You want to close any possible window in your build, because if you leave a window open, a Thief can get in and then you’re done. (See what I did there? ).

TL;DR: Death Shroud is your friend.

Why are you starting to hate it?

I don’t hate the trait itself, rather the fact that I could’ve use Shadow’s Embrace instead in many of the recent situations. It started at the Aetherblade Retreat where Mai Trin can max stack bleed in 2 seconds. I simply cannot handle it because my build lacks condi-removals.

The consequence of not taking Cloak in Shadows is that I cannot chain blind anymore, which currently works really well against physical professions (i.e. Warriors or Guardians).

Stealth is incredibly poweful.

Having Stealth is a direct damage increase for you on a Ranger

Because every second you’re not dead, the more damage you’ll end up doing.

I am talking about damage here. “Burst” damage.

If what you said had any relevance then we would see CoF speedrun groups wearing soldiers gear instead of berzerkers.

I use that in my current S/D build and I’m starting to hate it. It was a battle which to choose, either that or Shadow’s Embrace — I guess I’ll go back to Shadow’s Embrace.

Infusion of Shadow is a good choice also if you have an aggressive play style.

So -20% + -30% is not always – 50% and seeing the “0.5” makes me cringed.

As a thief player, I grabbed my Ranger as reaction to this thread and gave it a spin. I have the Ranger configured as a fairly standard BM cleric bunker and swapped out the Greatsword for a Longbow (leaving Sword/Dagger on the switch). The results were hilarious. It allowed me, a bunker, to stealth and re-position to open with a new chain of damage. Thieves have to come close to resume the fight but the Longbow 3 seconds really allow you to move to an entirely different direction causing total (long-range) confusion and allowing additional time for the target to approach. Overall, it’s not a game breaker and it was hilarious to play, but Thieves are constantly attacked for the ability to Stealth, so I’m sure that the Rangers will feel our pain in the near future.

Something "off" with GROUND skills' range

Longbows and Shortbows gets some small range bonus if you are shooting from higher elevation like in your pictures and penalty if you are shooting from a lower elevation.

This is why in WvW, the one on the wall can shoot farther than the one on the ground.

A thief would attack from stealth since we have stealth attacks. A ranger wouldn’t attack from stealth since they do not have any stealth attacks; their stealth would be purely defensive. Therefore, the ranger would wait out the full duration of stealth.

Nope, Ranger will use stealth for offensive also because of this;

“Remorseless: This trait now reapplies Opening Strike when the ranger gains stealth…”

But yes, by default without trait, it will be pure defensive.

i disagree a good story expands on what it did already we havent seen any update on the molten alliance its like it completely lost or dropped. ok whats going to happen in southsun now or the aetherblades. nope we are going into an election. yeah it sort of brought around from the other parts but im sitting here wondering what happens to the other things that happened and thinking hey we might never know. this plot is thin in my book. id love to see way more with the molten alliance(a story arc that takes us back to find more info about them) and how the settlers make out. give me substance not this thin sauce. i mean this a a living story make it a sort of story not something that dances around and vaguely gives something to tie into the next part of the story. they could have done so much more but it seems to be filler(not real meat) to just keep us playing like the dailies and monthlies and now achievement chests

Each month is an Act in a Play, you simply have to wait until the end before you can know who Luke Skywalker’s father really is.

You just have to wait for that one Act/Chapter that ties everything together.

Typically you only D/P to apply pressure and swap to your preferred weapon set to seal the kill.

Most D/P thieves I’ve run into, in WvW, stay with D/P and don’t swap out. I can count on one hand the number of really good thieves that swap in and out of different weapons that include D/P.

My bad, I meant to say P/D, not D/P (obviously P/D is to apply conditions, then swap to a different weapon set for clean up, that could be either S/D or D/P). >.<’

even if torment makes somebody nervous/pressured thats great and does wonders. a patch is even better. plus not everyone has condi removal. i dont mind if people remove my bleeds. unless ur d/p u have no chance of doing it over and over.

Yes, psychologically, it is very effective especially if they remove your 2 stacks of Torment instead of your 15 stacks of Bleed, you can almost see them panic and commit a lot of mistakes.

I used to patch my bleeds with cripple, but with Shadow Strike having faster animation than dancing daggers, it is now a more effective patch.

This update entices good rangers to use ranged weapons.

How long will it last? Who knows.

As far as I know, this should have been a Thief skill using Rifle.

srry to ask a stupid question that i am pretty sure i know the answer to . but since its a new skill ill ask anyway. torment can be increased with condi duration buffs/runes/foods skills right?

Torment is a conditional condition that behaves like bleed. I know for a fact that Condition Damage increases it but not sure about duration.

This is basically what you’re worried about? Well one piece with high Toughness will not be enough to pull aggro from a Soldier Class.

If you ever get aggro, simply dodge through your Soldier buddy and he’ll get the aggro right off you.

What you need to worry about is your damage output — too often too high, like those ’zerker gears will do, will generate more aggro than your Toughness pieces.

Taking TS out of context of an S/D build surely looks bad as the OP says.

Place it back in context and you’ll understand why it is what it is.

What I don’t like about it is the blind when you struck from the front.

It should stun the target if from the front and knocks them down if from the back.

I’ve seen this many times in other games also, where the game supports low end computers.

Low end computers process things slower and the server tries to compensate with that by slowing down the high end computer causing them to lag. Now by doing so, the server is now creating a bottle neck of data on the high end side, thus sometimes your character just zooms thru like “The Flash” only to rubber-band back because the server correction triggered; and the server dumps all the data you’ve issued which causing some of your skills to fail.

It’s dumb that games has to cater with low end computers, but that’s how they want to run their business. Other developers has better game design that they prioritize gameplay data over visual data — unfortunately, GW2 relies on the visual data to indicate the spells and the skills being used, thus we get this kind of problem.

But as long as it’s not happening often enough (“often” based on my irritation threshold), I don’t really mind at all. GW1 was the worst when it comes to flashing-forward and rubber-banding backwards. There are other games who cater to low end computers are far worst than GW2. So my threshold level is really high.

Your race might have been converted into a practice run. It happens when the race started late…it tells you on the announcement with big letters in the middle of your screen.

If that’s not the case, then it is probably a bug.

And someone did address this already, but OP, that Canach fight you could literally do naked. It had nothing to do with gear, you just have to kite him into bombs, nothing more nothing less.

You still need your gears to compensate on making a mistake…and yes, mistakes happen.

I’ve seen the bug where I’m still visible (looks like it’s only I who can see myself) but the stealth buff is up, so I guess it’s just a visual bug that I can see? :S

Yeah that happens to me also, but I’m not sure if it’s the GW client or my GPU driver failed to render my Thief invisible.

I dunno anymore. People who did tests apparently claim that bleed is removed first…even though I find that kind of unfair to people who rely on bleed to do the majority of their damage…

This is easily tested using Dagger mainhand, Venom, and level 0 weapons if you really want to see for yourself.

Celestial Armor

All around though, I’m worried celestial’s only going to be good for a MF set.

Thats what I expect honestly. I dont do the condition thing, so I cant say for sure, but I do know that the only way Celestial has any sort of chance to be useful outside MF, is if you make use of all 6 good stats.

Ok without changing the traits, try this one.

Head – Celestial
Shoulder – Celestial
Chest – Soldier
Legs – Soldier
Gloves – Celestial
Boots – Celestial

This set loses 82 power, but has more Toughness, Vitality, Condition Dmg, Heal Pwr, and Crit Damage (+12% MF) — not a whole lot but marginally better.

Curious to see your numbers using this set.

The problem here is that if you just swap your berserker gloves/boots/shoulders in the original set to soldiers to match the survivability of what you posted, you’ll end up with more EHP/DR/Damage.

Well then, I’m convince that …

All around though, I’m worried celestial’s only going to be good for a MF set.

lol feels like it but no. alot of thieves telling me the same thing ive been getting. CND not giving stealth or missing or causing instant revealed. some wierd stuff going on.

I was playing in hot join last night and I did notice the “instant revealed” when I used CnD. Not sure what’s the deal but perhaps it’s my dancing daggers still bouncing around when I went in stealth. Not really sure.

Except… He wasn’t resurrected. & The Lich wasn’t trying to resurrect him either. He & Shiro just guard the desecrated temple. The only person that tried to do it is Varesh, & she failed. You can’t have a fall story when there is no fall.

Ok, it seems that “resurrect” is not the right word to use because it’s easily misunderstood.

What I meant to say is that they are trying to resurrect him back into power, but yeah, that’s a poor choice of a word on my part.

As for Colin confirming what the “fall” is, that’s awesome!

But I still want to to see more lore about the Asura.

Maybe I’m the only one who feels this way. You could survey the players – or just query your database – and see what percentage of them actually accessed all this new content. I suspect it would be fairly low. It is vital to keep the hardcore gamers interested, of course.

Count me as one less player who feels the same as you do. I only have 1-2 hr of play time per day and I still manage to do all PvE content. I don’t do PvP that much nor I like Jumping Puzzle either, but this content is not really a jumping puzzle per se since you can collect skills that helps you navigate around the place.

I think this is just a content/interest mismatch.

If you’re the developer, you know that for a fact you will never please everyone.

- have not played in top tier servers
- nor have lead a zerg or joined an organized zerg
- nor have collaborated with other commanders to get the job done
- nor grouped with 5 other players to take supply camps and disrupt supply lines

based on my experience on NSP, TC, and fighting against various servers. I think the roamers on SoR are actually very good.

The Lich never resurrected him. He just brought Titans in to try to destroy Tyria.

Then you have to replay the mission where you have to fight the Lich and Shiro at the same time in Nightfall.

The only real fall was from his seat as a free god. The others were defeats.

Beyond the fact that it has already been confirmed that the fractal would be when the other human gods turned against him, a fall implies surviving when applied to a person/entity, and a loss. The second on your list there he was in the same position as before after his defeat, and the last he was dead (IIRC my GW1 events right).

Fall, defeat, they’re all semantics. The point is, every time he tried to rise up, we cut him down, thus he fell.

But yeah, I am hoping that the actual “fall” is the first one since the other ones has already been done and over with.

Can you imagine if each party member is an avatar of the one of the gods?

But meh! Enough with the human lore. I want to know more about the Asura and the Eternal Alchemy.

So for the kite, if each member of your guild pitch in, you don’t have to fork-up the whole cost of the kite since it is for the guild.

With your guild helping you, nothing is really expensive.

It depends on the guild type more or less. If your guild build up out of a group of friends than it could be (unless almost all would get one that would not spare you much anyway). But if your guild consists out of a larger base with more unknown people to you, a commander tag would be fine. But in the end it is more or less a simple toy. And I would not just give any random person money for it just so they can get it cheap and represent another guild sooner or later.

Well, there is your problem, you’re not seeing the wisdom of generosity. You already suspect that someone will represent another guild instead of giving them the benefit of a doubt. Let’s just say that they did that, how much did that cost you? 1g? Not something to be worked up about.

To me, if you help your fellow guild members, they are more than likely to help you out when you need it — even getting a silly toy.

Its more the style of guilds we are in i guess. My guild has a small group of people who represent full time. To that part i would do exactly what you say. (they even helped me with the last part of my legendary.

The rest however are part representers. They all are from small guilds connected to ours. in a way that they represent at times our guild hosts guild events. They do not contribute to the guild in other ways. but it makes it so a group of smaller guilds gets the player base to do bigger events.

The second part is why i say what i say on this matter.

Well, just do good things in your guild and when the half-ters (half-representers) see the good things, you never know, they may become permanent.

Be cautious not suspicious.
