If Arenanet is okay with selling legendaries

Arena Net sells gold.
Are you really surprised that they are selling Legendaries?

You guys fail to realize that Anet doesn’t sell Legendaries. It’s us players who do.

And to put it simply, if you don’t like the fact that we have these for sale, don’t buy them. We aren’t forcing you to do anything against your free will.

It’s not that simple. It would be if legendaries had a completely unique set of crafting materials, but they do not. They share materials with exotic and ascended gear, so even if you don’t want a legendary weapon they still impact your gameplay. A great example of this would be the tier 6 fine material price increases when ascended gear was added. This had a huge impact on the cost of crafting exotic gear, even though no changes were made to the exotic tier.

But it has no impact on your gameplay to begin with. Exotic weapons are the same stats as Legendaries at the moment. If you’re picky like me, and you want it for looks, then you chose that path to take. And for costs, you can get Exotic weapons with similar stats via Badges or Tokens for cheaper.

So if you desire to craft specific gear that uses the T6 mats, the prices for those are determined by us players and the market demand. Then it becomes a choice between Cost, Appearance, and Functionality. If you want that Infinite Light for the look, it’s your choice. If you just want something high end, you have other options.

There’s no possible way for Anet to create a database that’s full of every single possible offensive name or letter combination. Each case is review separately, and according to Galie, it’s looked at by more than one person before the penalty is put in place.

As for your swearing in game, it probably doesn’t catch Anet’s attention unless someone reports you (or if there’s an Anet employee in game). So if you argue with your brother in PMs, and he reports you, something might happen. Perhaps leave the swearing to voice chat or over the phone?

If you choose to play with RNG, don’t expect anything. If you opened 1000 Mystery Boxes, and there was a 9 out of 10 chance to get something you want, it’s no guarantee you’ll get it. Some people are lucky, some aren’t. That’s what you have to understand and live with when you take chances.

For example, it took me, I would estimate, over 350 tries in the Forge to get my 77 Clovers. Some got it with less than 200. I envy the other person, but I’m not QQing at the Forge. I accept that I had bad luck, and move on to continue playing the game. As for the Wintersday minis, I purchased 40 boxes, and got four minis. I’m satisfied with the results.

PS – all items in the Mystery Boxes have the same monetary value, which is none. Each person values the contents differently. Someone could get no minis, and 40 bells, and be just as happy.

That means it’s working as intended. Legendary weapons are meant to be long term goals. That goal can be shortened through smart game play. And yes, trading on the TP is considered “playing the game”.

A. I am not sure what a “good faith trader” is, but it sounds like someone who does not like being undercut.
B. I will with no remorse undercut to sell my items, if I can stand the loss
C. When the same is done to me, I shrug and move on…it takes longer for my stuff to sell is all
D. People are using bought and/or earned gold and cornering the market on items, are they "good faith traders’? How do I know who is who?

In closing I would say that you should pay a fee if you want to re-list your items, as it works today. You are no more a legitimate or good faith trader because you listed something first, than the person who lists it second or third.

There is definitely a double standard out there…manipulating the market is seen as clever, and undercutting by 1C is what outrages people. Pish posh, I say.

+1 to you for this.

People who complain about the 1 copper undercutting don’t understand that 1 copper less, is still less than their price. If they undercut me, I shouldn’t get mad. But it matters little, as my stuff gets sold either way.

This game was made so that everyone can enjoy it. Casual players are no more important than Hardcore players. So why would Anet design a mechanic that punishes the Hardcore players with TP selling wait times?

So back to the point that I keep repeating. If an item is being sold for less than other of the same type, the cheaper item should be listed first. It doesn’t matter how much less the price is. Less = less.

One can only hope Anet develops a currency that’s less than Copper. Something like a “Shilling”. 10 Shillings = 1 Copper. Oh the undercutting would be glorious!

Smooth Penguin.5294

Maybe it’s just me but I think for the money you pay for the amount of the gems you get compared to gold sellers it never seems to be worth it. You can buy 100g for $30.00 from a gold selling website from a mail I just received advertising their site. If they want people to buy gems I would think they would be a bit more reasonable and give more gold per 100 gems and so forth.

I’d also like to say they should give suspension to players who purchase gold rather than just flat out ban them. Giving them a 7-day slap on the wrist would do a lot more good than banning them and having them never play the game again. Along with spreading bad rumors about the game and such.

Just my two cents.

Why would Anet give warnings when players already agreed to follow the rules before they made their accounts. If people wish to purchase Gold from RMT companies that steal accounts and commit fraud, a perma ban is the perfect response.

As for being “entitled” to more Gold per Gem exchange, perhaps you don’t realize how much each coin is devalued when you infuse the market with currency. People are mad that certain Lodestones are 3 gold each, but wait until they start hitting 10 gold and up. That’s what would happen if Anet allowed the RMTs to run wild.

I really don’t care what anyone else thinks on the matter. The fact that they can be posted on the TP just made the whole process tainted in my eye. I’m still going forward, but only because it’s the only endgame in GW2.

If you purchase a single mat from the TP in order to further your Legendary progress, then you just made your complaint invalid. And if you said that all T6 mats and other Legendary components should be taken off the TP, that would be something else.

As for End Game, there’s SPvP and WvW. Both are extremely fun.

Buying one component and buying the whole thing are not the same, lmao if you think it is. All that account bound stuff I’ve been working on. That progress shouldn’t be buyable.

You purchased one component on the TP, thus by your own words you tainted your process. I’m only pointing out the facts as you’ve stated them to be.

Honestly, if you don’t want a Legendary, don’t make one. If you don’t want to buy a Legendary, don’t buy one. Go save time and money and get some Exotics. They’re currently the same stats as all the other Legendary weapons. Then if you get bored PvEing, do SPvP or WvW instead. Or you can make some friends, form a Guild, and play together.

That’s easy for people to understand—you can only have two numbers that aren’t zero in your price. If the item is up for 10g, you either have to get in line at 10g or go down to 9g90s, no 9g99s99c nonsense. That way, the market spreads converge and people will have confidence in prices.

Seller #1: 10g
Seller #2: 9g 99s 99c <—- there’s only one number that isn’ a “0”, and that’s “9”

If that’s what you mean, I fully support this!

TL;DR – Everything in the Gem Store has no value. They are virtual items that give you benefits from the game, such as boosts or different looks/skins to weapons. You cannot sell these items for profit. You cannon sell these items for real money. Therefore Anet is doing nothing wrong. Case close.

That doesn’t automatically make you immune to lottery laws. It is still possible to violate a state’s lottery law with virtual items of no value that you are unable to cash out on. As long as you don’t meet all three of the criteria though it will not violate it.

Mystery Boxes by their nature are usually hitting two of the three, but they usually slack in one aspect of it (typically the part where you are forced to pay money to participate).

Is it a gamble? Of course it is. So is dropping the 50 cents in the gumball machine. Is it an illegal gamble? So far the states have all said “No”.

Exercise restraint, buyer beware, and all that jazz.

A lottery is a promotion that has three elements:
1) Prizes
2) Winners Chosen by Chance
3) Consideration

To avoid being classified as an illegal lottery, sweepstakes must ensure that at least one of these elements is missing. Because prizes and luck are central to sweepstakes where the winners are drawn at random, legitimate promotions can never have “consideration”.

Definition of “consideration”: In sweepstakes terms, consideration is simply payment for a prize. Generally, sweepstakes that award prizes by chance are not allowed to have an element of consideration. Consideration doesn’t have to be money; it can be anything that can profit the sponsor. For example, a company cannot require that entrants purchase a product to participate in sweepstakes (or, if they do, they must provide an alternate method of entry).

So purchasing mystery boxes from the Gem Store requires the use of “Gems”. Gems can be either purchased via real money, or traded for with in game currency (i.e. Copper, Silver, and/or Gold).

Can someone please show me where players are being forced to spend real money to participate?

All these kids keep claiming Anet is doing illegal activities, when they have no basis for their accusations. You need to look at the LEGAL definition of the term “gambling”.

It’s gambling mate… no spin is going to convince anyone otherwise… definition below.

“Gambling is the wagering of money or something of material value (referred to as “the stakes”) on an event with an uncertain outcome with the primary intent of winning additional money and/or material goods. Typically, the outcome of the wager is evident within a short period."

I have no issue with gambling, but pretty sure it’s illegal in some places and would certainly be an issue if kids were doing this… just saying..

A person engages in gambling if he stakes or risks something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance or a future contingent event not under his control or influence, upon an agreement or understanding that he or someone else will receive something of value in the event of a certain outcome. Gambling does not include bona fide business transactions valid under the law of contracts, such as the purchase or sale at a future date of securities or commodities, contracts of indemnity or guaranty and life, health or accident insurance.

Federal law defines illegal gambling activity as:

-Is a violation of the law of the state in which it is conducted; and
-Involves five or more persons who conduct, finance, manage, supervise, direct or own all or part of such business; and
-Has been or remains in substantially continuous operation for a period in excess of thirty days, or has a gross revenue of $2,000 in any single day.

State laws on illegal gambling activity vary by state and often include offenses for possessing illegal gambling devices and promoting illegal gambling activity. An illegal gambling device is any device, machine, paraphernalia or equipment that is normally used or usable in the playing phases of any gambling activity, whether that activity consists of gambling between persons or gambling by a person involving the playing of a machine. However, lottery tickets, policy slips and other items used in the playing phases of lottery and policy schemes are not gambling devices within this definition.

Gambling is accepting, recording, or registering bets, or carrying on a policy game or any other lottery, or playing any game of chance, for money or other thing of value. Title 18, U.S.C., Sec. 1955, makes it a federal crime or offense for anyone to conduct an ‘illegal gambling business.’

TL;DR – Everything in the Gem Store has no value. They are virtual items that give you benefits from the game, such as boosts or different looks/skins to weapons. You cannot sell these items for profit. You cannon sell these items for real money. Therefore Anet is doing nothing wrong. Case close.

Why is selling a Legendary on the TP ok?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Regardless of whether or not it’s horizontal progression or vertical progression, buying legendaries off the TP is Pay2Win.

You fail to realize that Legendaries have the same stats as Exotics. And once Ascended weapons come out, they’ll be the same as those. I’m sorry you don’t understand that doesn’t count as Pay 2 Win.

Legendaries are supposed to be the highest achievement a player can get, a culmination of all their hardwork, and yet it’s purchasable with actually money (regardless of how much)? Terrible decision in my opinion.

….because being able to sell them “commercializes” the weapons, and thus makes them more afforadable.

They’re affordable? So how many Legendaries have you purchased in the last few days?

And for the record, Gems can be purchased with in game currency. You don’t need to spend a single dime outside of your initial $$$ investment to purchase an account.

So I figure there is very little to be upset about. Including cash-grab schemes, because if you are naive enough to think ANet is in the business of making everyone feel toasty warm inside instead of making money, then stop playing this game and get out in the real world a bit more and possibly get a job so you can understand what “business” means.

There is something to this, kind of.

Honestly, I think A-net is the ones being naive. In their efforts to get a smallish audience of people willing to gamble for miniatures to gamble away some cash, they are missing massive opportunity in the form of a game public that is very, very used to the concept of the F2P gaming model.

I’ll single myself out as an example. I’m 39 years old, middle class and have been playing computer games since before the introduction of the Atari 2600(I’m only quantifying this to give some idea of gaming experience and buying power). Raising kids and running a household, gaming is a very effective use of the entertainment dollar because a sixty dollar game will give many, many more days and hours of play than virtually any other expenditure of the same size. Incidentally, I’m also relatively close to the average demographic that is a solid target audience for F2P modelling—-this level of experience and buying power is the opposite of unique, it’s the norm.

With that much game experience little fluff items, especially when gambled for, are more or less a charity “tip” nod to the company that made a game. They don’t particularly extend the play time of the game and worse, if a person gets frustrated with an actual cash purchase, didn’t offer playability to keep them around to purchase the next batch. That isn’t to say offering “pay to win” items is the answer: players have overwhelmingly voted with their wallets against this model and in my opinion, rightly so.

So what’s a company to do? They need a product to sell, and it needs to be something people will actually feel gives them value. Here’s the stuff I usually see as value added:

1. Character/Bank slots, etc. They don’t affect character power, but are very value added. The game has offered them up, thankfully, and I’m sure they are among the most common purchases.

2. Just let people buy the minis, and absolutely, positively don’t give them away to those that do not. No gambling, no repeats obtainable in game. Volume makes up the added cash from the few willing to test RNG with real cash.

3. Give skins for armor/weapons that are unique to the store.

4. Let obtainable in game fluff be purchasable, in its entirety. Armor/Weapons, minis, etc. If a person would simply rather buy aesthetics, for petes sake let them. It doesn’t hurt anyone and can only help.

Some of this stuff is kinda/sorta available, but is either horrendously priced or not in a variety worthy of note. In my opinion, this is a much better model than kitten off the few people that are willing to test RNG once or twice, inevitably leaving a longer term audience with significantly less interest in purchases.

Allow me to give some counter points

1> I agree these are great things.
2> On the fence here. While I’d love to have all the minis, they start to mean less when everyone else has them. If I saw LA full of Foostivoos, I wouldn’t care for it as much anymore.
3> It may be unique to the store, but if everyone is running around with it, it looks less cool
4> I believe there should be more fluff available in the store, but I want stuff that’s rare as well. So there should always be some items that are harder to get than others. So the ones who do end up getting it will get to enjoy that privilege. That “awe” factor.

Here’s the point of “rare” items:

1) Rare means it’s something that not everyone can have.
2) If it were in the Gem Store, it would no longer be considered “rare”, since everyone can easily purchase it via Gems from Gold or Gems from $.
3) The fact that you don’t care if it’s rare or not proves you have a desire to have one. That same desire could be shared by many other players as well. And the reason why it’s desirable by many is because Foostivoo is both cute and RARE.

1c undercutting is destroying competition

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Smooth Penguin.5294

Smooth Penguin.5294

ok,this is for those that dont understand the problem / think 1c is a under/overcut.

GW2 market is comparable to a auction house where you only get 1 bid and u can underbid with anything even a cent. as long as the number is larger. if you want to change that bid it costs you 5% of your bid. sure the roles are reversed but here we are all buyers / sellers.

this would result in some very random and wierd auctions.

firstly; nobody want to be the first bidder. because they have no idea of how much the other consider the item to be worth and even if he hits what its worth he will be undercut with 1 cent.
and the price would jump very much. because the only way to have a chance to get the item is to guess what the others think its worth + 5% or something.

what would this result in? the auction house makes 5% more than they should and the guy who value the thing the most might not even get it.

secondly: a low price is initiated somehow. and ALL the buyers increase the price by 1 cent. because nobody cares to increase the price because they don’t care enough and hope that there isn’t any1 else that want the thing at that price.

resulting in the auction house losing ALOT of money.

so it could go in either direction. sure it isn’t a perfect equal to GW2 economy but close. and of course everything is reversed if you want to apply it to gw2. there is a reason why ppl get unlimited offers and no fee and they have a pusher in a auction house. because the0y want a a fair price. and if they were only to allow one bid they would’t get alot of customers because its very unreliable

now why would the % undercut help?
because it would give a fairer price and it would remove the fear of being the first ( not all but some) it also makes a nice marketplace. because we would get more space between each layer ill show you:

without % undercut limitation:

1 at 1.0000g
1 at 0.9999g
1 at 0.9998g
1 at 0.9997g
1 at 0.7000g
1 at 0.6999g

same bids WITH % limitation

4 at 1g
2 at 0.7g

with this system its clearly easier to watch the market and make your decision if you should undercut or match price. there have to be a reason why we can see the lowest prices / offers. and thats because they want us to use that information. but not when selling items for some reason :S but that’s another thread for sometimes in the future.

ask yourself this: would u let some1 him go before you in the line in the store if he payed you for 1 cent. no of course not your time is more valuable than that. but you cant turn him down. because it IS a profit. actually its worse, the store get the cent. but u still cant turn him down for some kitten reason. he/she is cute or smthn.

TL;DR

1c is. not. a. price increase/decrease when we are dealing with expensive things. end of story finito. if you disagree read^if not, good.

But if I offer an item 1 copper less than the other guy, it’s still less right? Therefore I get to sell my goods first, until someone else beats my current price.

tl;dr – 1 copper less than any price is less

Legendaries on TP are more price manipulation

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Smooth Penguin.5294

Smooth Penguin.5294

Anet, from the beginning and up until now, sees Legendaries as a long term investment. The rate at which people are getting the weapons are insane. Part of this was that Anet had no idea how dedicated some of us are with getting our awesome skinned items. The fact that people have Legendaries, and the fact that there are those with vast banks of wealth, can be attributed to either 1) exploits or 2) hardcore playing or 3) smart TP trading.

The people who current have Legendaries or can afford to buy them are a very small portion of the overall population.

In order to buy something of value, someone else must not only have said item of value, but also is willing to sell it. In the case of Legendaries, the time it takes to gather the resources and craft one, will make selling it that much smaller. Add in the fact that some Legendary weapons have a higher demand, thus higher mat costs, you have yourself an interesting situation. How does the seller value his time in addition to the cost of the individual mats? Is there an emotional attachment to the item?

I think you completely skipped over the part where I explicitly outlined the value in this situation. The only non-monetary component of legendaries are the karma, badges, world completion, and skill points. This can be done in two weeks or less, and doing so, making the legendary, and selling it will result in profits upwards of 500g at the current buyer level. That’s more money than 98% of the population can make in two weeks, and is way more than is even tangibly possible farming Fractals or Cursed Shore. Unless a player has absolutely 0 desire to make money, or doesn’t think waiting two weeks for 500g is a good investment, there’s absolutely no reason for this not to be taken advantage of. Lodestones and Dawn, which were previously stable, have started to go up in price again substantially. Why? Because if you have a bunch of the non-money goods lying around that you’ve accrued from playing what incentive do you have to not pay an extra 50g on a precursor, in order to make a 500g profit?

How a seller values their time is a very easy estimate when the return is nearly three times more than the maximum possible money that could be gained doing hardcore farming in the same time period.

It’s true that a hardcore player can farm all the Karma, Badges, and SP needed to for the Bloodstone. Part of the way Anet slows this down is the fact that you need to play the RNG of the Forge. You need to buy Mystic Coins and Ectos by the boatloads, then still have enough SP to buy crystals or stones to throw into the Clover formula.

After all is said and done, the only ones who can actually afford to buy all the mats, plus the precursor, and have all the Karma, Badges, and SP are a few. And then you have the few people who can afford to actually pay for it. We’re talking about a very small population of ultra wealthy players. Flipping Legendaries isn’t something you can do on a regular basis, since the money will only change hands among those ultra wealthy players The effects on the economy will be short lived, since high end drops will continue to supplied, and the demand to purchase Legendaries at profitable prices will slowly dissapear.

I still say that the average player who is aiming to make a Legendary won’t just dump it into the TP. Currently, I’m guestimating that a majority of the Legendaries that were crafted are now Soulbound.

There’s always gonna be someone who doesn’t understand how markets work. It’s unfortunate that Anet has a great system in place, but due to a vast majority of people who are new to this sort of mechanic, these people will complain over everything. It’s not their fault since they’re so used to a small scale economy from GW1.

People can post offers as much as they want. But the power falls on the people who actually have the weapon. You can’t actually manipulate the value of an item that you don’t have. Twilight can sell for 200 gold, or 2,000, or 9,000. That would be the sole choice of the seller. They can manipulate the prices all they want, and a buyer is at their mercy. If there are only a couple of Legendaries on the market, it’s just simple Supply vs Demand. If the demand is great enough, and the supply is limited to a couple of weapons, someone rich will be willing to pay anything for it if they really want it. The rare case would be that a buyer makes an offer so great, that a seller may just fill that order.

Legendary weapons (and hopefully armor) will be their own niche market in the larger TP World. The costs to make them severely limit their availability to be crafted often, so even after years in this game, you won’t see thousands for sale. Legendary weapon sellers will forever have the power to dictate the prices they see fit.

TL;DR

It’s Supply vs Demand. The ones who own the Legendaries can decide whatever price to sell it for. If they choose to sell for 200 or 2,000 gold, that’s all up to them. But the players who want one can either pay these prices, or take the time to make their own.

There’s nothing wrong with selling something you own for a price you want.

Why are we beating this issue to death? Gaile has said over and over that there isn’t direct trade options because it was decided so. Anet put in the Trading Post as a means for players to buy and sell their goods.

And you know what? It REDUCES the risk of scams. But if you do make trades via the Mail system, Anet won’t stop you. At the same time, they won’t get involved (no item restoration) between player disputes should someone claim they weren’t paid.

Anet does not appreciate trolls on their forums I see you running around posting hateful comments on multible threads and I am telling you that I don’t appreciate it either.

Anet isn’t trolling. They stated this was a thought out decision to leave players trades to the TRADING POST. Stop hating on Anet plz.

I accidentally spend 400 gold converting to Gems so I can buy Wintersday items. I went to get a tooth pulled from the dentist, and I was under the effects of some happy gas. Long story short, I would like to have my 400 gold back plz. I already purchased a lot of mystery boxes with the Gems, and opened them. But because I was medicated, I would like a reset. /sarcasm

Edit – As you can see, I can make up excuses for stuff, as do many other people. And there’s no way of proving either way, aside from me saying it was made up in the first place.

There is a trading system. It’s called the TRADING POST.

If you wish to use the mail system, feel free to do so. Anet won’t get involved in disputes between player deals. Anet has said this many times. So if you get scammed, good for you.

Why is selling a Legendary on the TP ok?

If this item carries such a high emotional value, the owner will less likely sell it for such a low price like 2k gold. Remember, the prices that pop up on the main TP screen are BUY ORDERS. With all the time invested in making a Legendary, I’m sure no one currently, or in the near future, will sell it for that low.

With that said, if you think it loses it’s appeal, don’t make one. Or better yet, make one, and sell it to me for 2k.

Im in the same situation and ive found like 8 other people so far who also have the same story.

8 people out of hundreds of thousands of players worldwide. This doesn’t seem like a wide spread problem to me.

Your reasoning is like saying only a few people die of rabies every year so it’s not a problem. I guess it only becomes a problem when it affects you? In that case, I hope it happens to you so you can feel the frustration and lack of help from ArenaNet. Imagine not being able to post on these forums (except through a friend) and when you send in tickets you don’t get helped.

My friend’s sister was hacked, and it took Anet all of 30 minutes to get her back in game. Plus there’s the account restorations now. Even if someone were to get into my account, I have full confidence in Anet to help me.

As for myself, I deleted my character on day one, and lost my Deluxe items. Anet got those back for me after I filed a Support ticket.

As long as you answer their questions, and provide as much detail as possible, there’s no need for worry. It’s when you start filing tickets for stuff like “other guy scammed me” or “I deleted my items by mistake” that cause your ticket get /facepalmed

Everyone arguments jealousy, but gold grinding isn’t the only answer for something being “legendary”, still think these weapons lost their purpose.

Yes, because I’m sure farming 9k gold isn’t a legendary task in and of itself.

And yes, buying enough Gems to convert to 9k gold is also a legendary feat.
