It amazes me how mad people get when Anet decides to offer bonuses for buying Gems. They aren’t forcing you to buy Gems to play this game. Just like when they offered Gem Store discounts for items these past three days. It’s all optional. If you buy X amount of Gems, get bonus goodie. Pretty simple marketing tactic. It’s a different story if Anet put it up for sale for 4k Gems.

Players need to realize that it’s their own desires that drives the decision on whether to buy Gems for the mini or not. Are you a collector, and desperately need Mr. Sparkles to complete your set? Are you a completionist that needs to fill every blank slot in your bank? Or are you an asura fanatic that must have an epic golem to show off in game? Last I checked, Anet isn’t responsible for our psychological profiles.

I’m sorry but what you say is out of place.
Giving for free and promoting those who buy gems is one thing. Forcing people who collect minis to buy 4k gems in 1 month?!

Really?
REALLY?!

I respected them a lot when they promoted buying gems with free minis. You could get them anyway and those who supported the game had them extra.

When they changed it to free gifts only for those who will spend money when we tell them to – I LOST MY RESPECT FOR ANET.

So think again what you write. Look on what changed in the way they operate.
I’m glad I don’t collect those special minis since I only bought 2k gems and 4k gems is too much for me in December. I would basically rage.

If a player has a compulsion/need to collect all Minis in game that he/she can’t control, that’s unfortunately an issue that should be addressed outside of the game with a professional.

I would say that players should be glad they don’t need to buy a plane ticket, PAX ticket, and wait in an endless line at Anet’s booth to get the mini. By paying $50, you not only get 4,000 Gems, but the bonus mini as well. If you can’t afford enough Gems to reach the bonus, then perhaps it wasn’t meant to be.

I firmly believe that if Evon was elected, you would have seen much better deals in his shop. But even then, he’s being generous enough to give you a bonus just for buying Gems. It’s a win/win situation here. Any complaints would just be “entitlement”.

Just wanted to correct you. Coffee shops don’t offer free Wifi to draw people in. Customers will come in regardless, because they want the coffee. The free Wifi is a convenience for customers who decide to hang out. Why do I say this? Because nearly all coffee shops offer free Wifi.

Drawing folks in is different from differentiating. Almost all coffee shops offer free WiFi because it is profitable to do so. It probably affects sales on several fronts, but making the shop a place to hang out is an important aspect.

Restaurants seat folks by the windows first so the folks walking by see a bustling business and will be more interested than if they walked by an empty looking restaurant. Shops go out of their way have full shelves because things sell better than empty looking shelves. A good portion of my time in my younger days was spent “fronting” shelves, where you pull product forward and make a wall so customers don’t see the empty space in the depth of the shelf. They wouldn’t have paid me to do it if it didn’t make a difference. Not everyone is affected by those tactics of course, but enough that it makes it worthwhile to spend real money making sure that potential customers get the appearance of thriving, fully stocked businesses.

How many times have you seen complaints that the game was “empty and dying” because a certain area on a certain server was under-populated? It’s human nature to assume that if there are lots of people in a place, that place must be a desirable place to be. Why do you think some clubs keep a queue outside even though there’s plenty of room for those folks to go inside?

Coffee shops do not offer Wifi to draw people in. It’s part of the experience they offer. I’m not sure if you’re like me at all, but when I go to Starbucks, I go because 1) coffee is good, 2) people are good, and 3) it’s cool and hip to hang out. The free Wifi they offer is a bonus, not a primary draw. And no, I’m not a Hipster. My wife on the other hand…

You’re spot on with getting seated by windows to make it look full. Supermarkets use the similar strategy with fronting shelves to cover empty holes, but also do it because it makes the store look neater. Of course, we were paid the bare minimum, since it’s a mindless job to have outside of bagging groceries. It’s a no skill job, but a job none the less.

Now back to the game. Anet does want to make sure people are visiting all areas of the world. End game players mainly flock to places with the best drops. But with more content updates, we’re seeing that Anet’s pushing us back to areas that were barren before. It’s a good strategy to spread players out.

Keep in mind that End Game players will do what they want. If you’re an Achievement Point hunter, you’re more likely to follow where ever the Living Story sends you. If you’re a farmer, you’ll stick to Cursed Shore and Malchor’s Leap trains. Because most of them already congregate in similar areas, they’ll pretty much never be alone. A majority of the minority who supplies Anet with microtransactions usually visits the same places over and over.

I understand these different reasons, but i do have a little brother and having bad security was an error on my part. The problem is my characters were deleted months ago. I would hope that this would prove i had no intent of gaming the system or that i am making this up. The lesson is learned, but the time investment and $ spent on the game for these characters can never be returned. I would be willing to do anything to “prove” what happened, but they only have support via e-mails.

Alas, there is no proof you can offer. Account rollbacks have to meet certain requirements. It’s unfortunate that you don’t meet them.

The “little brother” argument holds no weight here. You’re responsible for your own PC’s security. If he managed to access it, and you stored your account info in the client, that’s no different than having your creditcard laying on the table, and him using it to buy stuff online.

Anet needs solid proof that you get hacked. Because access came from the same household, there’s no way to prove 1) you didn’t delete your characters by mistake, 2) you aren’t sharing the account, or 3) that your “little brother” even exists.

Take this as a lesson, and password protect your PC.

My comment to Yoro was to say threatening to stop doing something which doesn’t affect their income isn’t a threat. That’s like saying you’re going to stop leaching the wifi at the coffee shop while sitting in your car. Doesn’t really matter to the coffee shop since you aren’t buying anything anyways.

Well the impact is indirect. Coffee shops don’t offer free WiFi out of the goodness of their hearts. They do it to draw folks in and increase the number of folks in and around their shop, which makes it more attractive to certain potential customers.

I agree that just not buying gems with gold would have no impact, but if that was one of the features that drew you to the game and now it’s untenable for you, you might play a lot less or not at all. If population drops significantly, ANet will notice.

Players are the lifeblood of MMOs, even if only a small percentage of them shell out cash.

Just wanted to correct you. Coffee shops don’t offer free Wifi to draw people in. Customers will come in regardless, because they want the coffee. The free Wifi is a convenience for customers who decide to hang out. Why do I say this? Because nearly all coffee shops offer free Wifi. The only way to differentiate coffee shops is by name recognition (branding), taste/quality of the coffee, customer service, ambiance, etc. Example, I spend tons of money st Starbucks because I like their coffee and the people who work there. If the mom and pop small business down the street sells cheaper coffee and has equal customer service, but the coffee doesn’t taste as good, I personally won’t go.

As for your point on Gold -> Gems as a reason to play the game. Sure there might be a small percentage of the player population who decided to buy GW2 on the fact that you can get virtual currency for free. However, keep in mind that since there are no subcription fees, it doesn’t matter if you stop playing or not. What matters is that NCSoft/Anet continue to sell new accounts, plus continued microtransactions from existing customers. This keeps the company in business.

Just to clarify. All players do matter in an MMO, just some matter more. We all paid the initial cost of the game, so if we stop playing, there’s no real loss. That said, all players are potential microtransaction customers. Anet would like people to do microtransactions, so they’ll continue to bring out different products in hopes that players decide to spend real money. If Gold -> Gems become out of reach, and you really want an item, you need to make the decision of whether to buy Gems or not.

GW2 Becoming P2W

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Smooth Penguin.5294

Smooth Penguin.5294

Eventually it will be.. but you can transfer gold to gems so you can get everything anyway.

But to me thats not even the point. The main question to me is, do the micro-transactions influence the game in a negative way?

The answer for me clearly is yes (and thats simply because it’s the way Anet makes the money so nearly every patch has as goal selling more gems in stead of improving the game) so P2W or not, at this point the gem-store is bad for the game.

With that the idea that you help the game with buying gems is also flawed. Buying gems helps to get the game in a worse shape.

Not sure how you come to your conclusions here. Microtransactions are 1) optional and 2) mainly cosmetic. So when you claim the Gem Store affects the game in a negative way, please explain how. The game updates content regardless if you buy Gems or not. Anet fixes bugs for everyone, not just people who buy Gems. And content themed Gem Store goods that are promoted with updates are still optional. Marjory’s dagger looked awesome, but I’m not forced to buy them.

I know of people who spent not a single penny on Gems. They converted in game Gold for in game Gems. Did that make them better players? Nope. Did it make them happy to have new cosmetic items? Sure. Don’t see the negative here.

As for people like me to buy Gems with RL currency. Did that make me a better player? Nope. Did it make me happy? Sure. Again, where are the negatives?

There are many types of players in this game. And among those players are people who have disposable income. If they choose to support Anet through microtransactions, that only helps everyone, since in reality, the game company is a business. And businesses exist to make money.

Agreed. I’m so bummed out that we’re never going to get to play through the origins of Abaddon’s secret alliance with Scarlet.

Noooooo! It can’t be! That’s impossible!

Search your feelings. You know it to be true.

We know for a fact that Scarlet wouldn’t be involved with the Abaddon Fractal. The Reactor’s meltdown was recent, thus it makes perfect sense for her to be involved with the Inquest’s research. Abaddon’s battle was at the dawn of magic, before there were Dragons.

Basically, people who voted for Kiel, voted for Scarlet. People who voted for Evon, voted for the best Fractal idea that Anet could have provided. It’s a shame that it’ll never happen now.

We know for a fact Scarlet was written to be involved with this update regardless of player vote. Her presence was written in months in advance, the writers have said as much on the forums.

The fallout (Ha!) if Evon had one would have been soooooooo much worse. Be grateful it wont happen now.

Evon is different than Kiel. He knows what he’s doing, thus his paid research would have been clean and bug free. The only time Scarlet would have been a part of the Abaddon Fractal, would be after we finished and exited. She wasn’t around during the time of the god wars, thus wouldn’t have been apart of the actual Fractal instance.

However, all my Gems are tied up in my virtual girlfriend, so I can’t afford the transfer fee. Here’s my conundrum – I’m not sure how one gets BG leadership to pay for my move to their server.

I’m not the best WvW player, but I do have a Commander taco. I can lead pugs to capture Stone Mist, but that’s usually only when it’s empty. I can solo cap Sentries. I learned some WvW tactics from two of the best Maguuma Commanders (Cody and Oldsmeller). My PvE background is quite strong, having helped command some TC groups in Tequatl kills. I’m pretty decent at Jumping Puzzles, but not pro enough to finish Super Adventure Box. I have a Legendary and all top level gear.

Would these requirements meet the standards of the Black Gate leadership? If not, would someone please let me know how to get sponsored into the winning server of Season 1?

For many players, myself partially included, it was considered that a vote for Evon was a vote of support for RNG Black Lion Chest weapons.

Yes, they already existed. Yes, they’re still here, arguably the system is worse. I’ll know, however, that I did not vote for the NPC who claims to be in charge of the BLTC, and therefore I am not showing my support and admiration of such a system.

ArenaNet will ignore it, of course, and do whatever NCSoft tells them to do with the Black Lion Trading Company when it comes down to it. Let’s not kid ourselves. In essence, the election meant very, very little. Probably some weird social experiment for a local university?

I apologize, I do not want to sound polemic, but what is the logic on which it is based the “taxation” of the entire playerbase (through ascended crafting) while it seems a fact confirmed that a good percentage the players has no greatly increased their wealth (in gold and/or materials)?

I believe it’s a two fold reason.

1) First of all, Ascended gear is not supposed to be easy or quick to acquire. These are top tier equipment, and have some sort of gate to them. For Ascended accessories, you’ll notice that certain ones require Laurels, which are majorly gated. Some require Fractal tokens, which are slightly easier to get. Armors and weapons require a lot of high level materials, plus time. You can bypass the time gate here, but you’ll have to pay the market price on the TP.

2) The other reason why Anet implemented such high mat costs is because of what me and Ursan have stated previously. There’s a lot more resources generated due to farming. We’re not talking about individual people who didn’t farm, so let’s get away from that. The Supply of these resources are higher than normal. The excess needed a sink, thus the reason why some Ascended mats required the amounts you currently see in game. On the flip side, market players capitalized on this by making a profit on common mats, since they were now in high demand. People wanted to make Ascended gear, thus were willing to pay outrageous prices. Did you enjoy paying 12 Silver for one Ancient Wood Log? No? But people did anyways, and farmers who held off selling when prices were low, made a killing.

It all comes down to taking away resources from the world. It doesn’t matter what a poor player has in his/her bank. Yes they might not be able to afford to buy from the TP. But most of these required mats can be easily obtained through normal game play. They’ll just have to take longer to craft Ascended by doing it the old fashioned way, harvesting.

mr. Smith is reffering to the wealth people earned during the Queen Jubilee event, so i dare to say he is contradicting himself, or maybe ascended crafting (more or less 200 golds for each craft from 400 to 500) is designed only for the ones who farmed the event, so a minority of the playerbase, as Mr Smith stated
OT: plebes, plebeians…are you playing with semantics?

edit: i don’t like to spam so i edit the post
IMO the contradiction is on the fact that ascended craft is meant for all the playerbase, while only a percentage (less than 50% is an educated guess?) of said playerbase increased significantly their wealth
OT: I don’t want to start a debate about the derogatory meaning of the word plebeian

When I said “wealth”, I included not only Gold, but the materials and other drops. I did not elaborate on this, so then John, through access to GW2 raw data, made a statement on Gold itself.

A smaller percent (than I assumed) of the population got rich through farming. Gold and resources were generated. People who didn’t farm only saw a small uptick in their wealth, but shared in the excess resources by buying from the TP. So as I stated before, some players who didn’t take advantage of loot drops are left behind. That’s not to say they can’t participate in Ascended crafting. Just that farmers will have an easier time with the vast resources they kept.

But make no mistake. If you didn’t make your Gold from the Queen’s Gauntlet, or Champion farming, you’ll be left behind in terms of wealth. That’s why it’ll be interesting to see how Anet responds to this.

This is incredibly hyperbolous. In the last week, the median player earned less than 3 gold in the new content (that’s discounting all players who earned less than 1 gold).

Just a reminder for the OP: a statement by JM himself
some people didn’t farm the Queen Gauntlet/Pavilion or the Scarlett’s Invasions so they have no wealth that needs to be sunk
the poor “plebeians” as OP called them not so long ago

You’re spinning that the wrong way. John responded to my comment in terms of overall player population. Not everyone farmed, this is true. However, as Ursan and I have said, that doesn’t mean the resources weren’t farmed by the smaller percentage of the population. The farming that did happen generated more resources for the small percentage of the population, who then sold it to the rest via the TP. The influx dropped mat values to half what it is today.

Kiel is like Trahearne, someone who benefited from our hard work in slaying the bad guys.

Evon is like a Saint, someone who single handedly saved Lion’s Arch without piggybacking off of another hero’s work.

The choice was obvious. Evon should have won on merit alone.

Umm what? Evon went to LA to extort the people there. Then he had a change of heart and killed his captain and then ran the Black Lion Trading company himself. He has done nothing to be considered a “Saint”.

Ellen on the other hand is part of the Lionguard and helped defend LA from the Risen. She also led the investigation and counterattack against the Karka, and helped defeat the Queen, and then stayed on the Island to aid the refugees. She even destroyed the contracts that the Consortium were using to make the refugees slaves. She is also the one who opened the investigation with Marjory against the Aetherblades and even located their base, where they captured the leader of the Aetherblades.

So sorry, but Evon has done nothing compared to Ellen. Ellen is a hero, while Evon is just a simple trader.

You are vastly misinformed. Evon is a hero, and did everything without needing our help. Kiel accomplished many things… thanks to our hard work. We defeated the Karka Queen. We saved Southsun. We pushed back Scarlet’s Aetherblades.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/short-story-evon-gnashblade-disembarks/

Lore doesn’t lie.

If you’re going off the Lore, the Lore says nothing about Smooth Penguin doing all that. Nor does it say that xxxNarutoxxx did any of that.

The lore states what Ellen did, not what we did. So that argument is right out the window since we are going off of lore, not game play. Which is exactly what I am talking about. What the lore states.

I can paste links too. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Ellen_Kiel

The lore was written, and it’s called the Living Story. My participation in it had me and my fellow heroes running all types of errands for Kiel. In fact, now that I think about it, Kiel committed crimes doing the story. She should have been arrested for criminal property damage when she sank that ship in the bay.

So you can post all the links you want. Evon’s decorated history cannot be unwritten. The only constant we have today is that a majority of the players failed to recognize his greatness.

Whether you ran errands for Kiel or not, she played a big part in the story lore wise. And what was your precious Evon doing the whole time all this was going on? Oh that’s right. Making money off people instead of saving them from the threats plaguing LA. He was a criminal who didn’t care about the people of LA. He just wanted to be on the council for his own profit.

Yeah, serious greatness there alright. Meanwhile, Ellen is going around fighting the threat that is claiming LA and helping the people. But seeing as you’re an Evon’s number one fan, you’re blind to the truth. So I’m done debating this with you as you’ll support Evon no matter the facts.

Without Evon, most heroes wouldn’t have access to high quality weapons and armors to equip onto themselves to save Kiel’s hide.

Some people are blinded by the pretty human face in front of them. They can’t see that the obvious Living Story choice was a heroic charr. Bottom line, we players failed him. And now we pay the price.

Tis a shame we can’t use our Evon tokens as an alternate to BL Claim Tickets. I’m sure Evon considered that option, but being a fair charr, felt that it would be too unbalanced in economic terms.

This confuses me greatly. How do you do this? Especially when blues/greens drop so frequently.

Instead of waiting for drops, I would buy them off of the TP.

Oh no… I just fell into the P2W trap!

There are games in which paying for gear/guns/tanks pretty much guarantees a win over other players in a competition.

In GW2, due to the nature of the combat, max gear is no guarantee of a victory.

Even so, it does help. Especially in sPvP/WvW, every single bit of stat helps you to win against your opponent.

Not true. Skill has greater weight than stats.

if that was so, then explain to me why zergs keep on farming low level places for gold and armor drops, ruining it for low levels.
why is it so important to have at least rare armor to be accepted in a party, why a white armor is seen as trash?

1) Champ loot scales to the level of the character. If you’re lv 30, don’t expect a lv 80 drop. Some low level areas have Champ Trains, simply because there’s enough of them to cycle through constantly.

2) Parties have their own requirements. If I don’t know you, sure I’ll ask you to ping gear. But if you’re my guildie, I’ll carry you if need be. Just because one party ask for fully geared players, doesn’t mean all do the same though.

3) White armor is only “trash” if you get something greater. I played my new character with white armor until I could afford different ones.

It’s funny how everyone cries about could have beens and other possibilities that didn’t come to occur.
If Evon had won, and his content failed to meet players’ expectations, there would also be a wave of Kiel supporters spamming ‘I told you so’ threads.

Arguing about could and might have beens is not productive, because there’s no way to prove anything. It’s like watching atheists arguing with creatonists all over again.

That wouldn’t happen, as Evon is an honorable charr. He would have given us Abaddon Fractal research, and it would have been glorious. Evon doesn’t let down #TeamGnashblade!!!

What you did yesterday is not important. It’s about what you’ll do for me tomorrow.

And that would have been the Abaddon Fractal. Kiel don’t understand business. She only knows how to fight. What Evon could have done far surpasses Kiel’s abilities. So if you voted for what the candidate would have done for you in the future, IMO, you might have short changed yourself if you voted Kiel.

Can u maybe support ur claims with a link or are we at the same claiming level? Cuz if your answer isn’t very helpful.

I digged it out cuz I’ve not yet seen/gotten a dev answer.

So the truth comes out. It was all about humans vs charr. We can’t live in the past with this type of mindset. Charr are people too, and deserve to be treated better.

Until they start taking baths to get rid of that smell, I’m afraid my opinion stands strong.

You make the mistake in assuming that all humans bathe and smell good.

Just remember, it was the humans that stole land from the charr. The Ascalonian King (a human) took the land illegally, and refused to give it back.

So people who voted for Kiel based on the Fractals offered got exactly what they expected and voted for.

What’s the problem with that?

The fact that we all have to now suffer the permanent loss of the Abaddon Fractal.

Go read the lore on it. Yay, you now know what happens in the Abaddon Fractal. It’s old news, already written in stone. The Fractal won’t change that.

Sorry but I’d rather experience new stories and new lore, instead of reliving old lore that we already know what happened.

What new stories? If you followed the in game lore of the Reactor, you’ll find that the Inquest were involved. This, too, is old news. That being said, Abaddon was a god. The Inquest are just evil asura. Abaddon > Inquest.

Even though Maguuma is the #1 server in terms of skill, Blackgate is the ultimate #1 overall. Why? Because not only do they have skill, but also the Gold to purchase other skilled players to help them. Anet should just award them the Gold tier title in advance for each season, since they’ll never lose.

Wait wait wait. I didn’t see the stream. Are you confirming that the entire lore of the Reactor Fractal… is based on someone “we” did, or will do? As in our interference with the Fractal research caused a rift in time, and lead to the Reactor breaking. Or is it just that we’ll play the part of the Inquest who caused the meltdown?

In either scenario, this makes the case for a Recall Election even greater. I feel so bad for Evon and his supporters right now. The Abaddon Fractal is just screaming to be built…

People are just confusing the fractals of the mist with a time travel device. From the short segment we saw we will probably just play the part of the Inquest who caused the meltdown.

/sigh

Evon would have given us some good lore with his Fractal. This livestream is additional proof to that fact.

As a fervent Gnashblade supporter you were going to say that regardless of what I told you

Because no matter what response you gave, they all lead to the same conclusion: people should have voted Evon Gnashblade.
