Let me assure you, as an accountant, that if a tax is being charged, it is not the company that implemented it upon themselves. Different jurisdictions have different tax laws. The state, province, territory or country imposes the taxes, not the company. The company is merely collecting on behalf of the jurisdiction. Don’t blame ANet. This will be why some of you will pay tax for gems and some will not.

You’re kidding right. I’m sure you know quite well that not all companies administer tax laws correctly. Also, it would seem quite unlikely that all these different tax jurisdictions implemented changes in there tax laws effective at the end of the first week of December 2013. So either they weren’t collecting tax they should have been previously, or they are collecting tax they shouldn’t be now, or maybe even more likely a combination of both depending on location.

Previously, Anet was doing the transactions. Now, they’re using a 3rd party company to process Gem purchases. So it might be more along the lines that they weren’t collecting taxes, but still paying them to the government. Meaning, they would take a small loss off the top of each Gem sale.

That’s true Grimm. However, the complainers are forgetting this, as all they see is the shiny at the end of their tunnel vision. They all want the best stuff, but when the requirements are too high, they get mad. Kind of like wanting that Ford Mustang, but wanting to pay only what they can afford to get it, not the sticker price. Or wanting a Louis Vuitton purse for the same price as a generic Walmart bag.

Bottom line, players can’t have the best of both worlds. Play within your means, and buy when you can afford. If being Casual means they have limited access to content, find ways to make more time to play this game.

Yeah for pve players it doesn’t matter. But I am not one of those. I fight things that hit back (real people) and when you face someone that has the same skillevel as you, and they have more stats, armor, and weapon damage, they will beat you.

If I played this game for PvE I would never even think about getting any ascended armor.

GW2 is not alt friendly for WvW players. That better?

You’re close. However, in WvW, I can be geared in all whites, and still win. There are two things that determine wins: Skill, and zerg size. Skill is far superior than gear. If you feel having a slight stat increase will guarantee you victories, you severely underestimate how good WvW players can be. As for zergs, you can run naked, and still survive.

What server are you playing on out of curiosity?

I’m on Maguuma. The #1 skilled NA server in WvW. We can go toe to toe with Black Gate, so long as we’re awake.

This explains a lot. If you think a person in white items can beat a player of equal skill in ascended items, you’re delusional…. but I already knew that from reading this post.

It’s done on a daily basis in our WvW. You’ll see the occasional Maguuman without armor standing over the downed body of enemies. You don’t need armor when you’re skilled enough to evade attacks. That’s why I say the Skill > Gear.

You’re paying $50 to get Gems. The item is a bonus, one that Anet didn’t have to give in the first place. So arguing over the fact that Anet is doing something nice for free is a bit low and mean spirited in the Christmas season.

Complainers want an easier, alternative way to get Ascended gear. By asking for another method to acquire Ascended gear that’s easier than Crafting and RNG chest drops, would basically invalidate the need to Craft in the first place. Why would Anet put in place something that punishes the people who spent the time and money to level their Disciplines to 500?

This alone proves you don’t know what I am saying or what people are asking for.
NOT ASKING FOR EASIER, ALTERNATIVE WAY.
Did you purposely skip over the parts where I said, even harder alternative methods would be welcomed by me. Or just ignore them? I don’t care if its harder alternate methods. RNG chance is not a viable harder method as you’re not actually working on anything, you’re hoping on chance. I just do NOT WANT TO CRAFT AND MINDLESSLY GRIND.

I don’t know how else I can say it, because you just don’t get it. You keep falling back to an argument against something I am not in any way, shape or form saying.

The alternative already exists if they drop from Ascended chests. So then we players have two ways to get it: Crafting or RNG. Neither is locked behind P2W doors, and are casual/alt friendly.

>RNG

>Alt Friendly.

Do you know what alt friendly means?

RNG isnt even main friendly O.o

If you don’t like RNG, the alternative to that is to craft. That’s a guaranteed way to get the specific type of armor you want.

I’m really tired of reading all these threads of endless complains how gw2 is not alt friendly. All currencies are account bound, you don’t need to level for pvp, you’re up scaled in WvW, we have down scaling system in PvE, we have experience scrolls, we have tomes of knowledge, we have scrolls of knowledge, now we got account bound fractal level and soon – account bound WvW levels, how is that not alt friendly?
In many MMO’s when you create a new character, you start from SCRATCH, sure it can always be more alt friendly and it is definitely getting there, in any case, at least for me, this is one of the most alt friendly games I have ever played.

GW2 is not alt friendly, I will now counter your points.

If you’re upscaled in WvW you’re going to get pwnt, end of story. bad armor, bad weapons, no good runes/sigils, not even a full build.

We just barely got level up scrolls, up until THIS patch where now they are available to those who pvp constantly. And really available ONLY to spvp players.

Account bound fractal level but still need to farm farm farm for rings earrings amulets, and backpieces for alts.

Account bound WvW levels hasn’t happened yet, so it cannot be discussed if we are talking about the present.

Now lets add to it:

Extreme expense to gear up alts, and multiple builds for your characters. With ascended weapons, and now ascended armor, it’s near impossible for an average wealth player.

Can’t swap runesets in gear, must have a completely separate gearset with different runes, same with weapons/sigils. Can double or triple your costs and time.

It will absolutely help when ranks are account bound, It’s one of the main things that deters me from playing 90% of my characters. But it’s still got work before it can be dubbed alt-friendly.

I’ll counter this too. GW2 is alt-friendly, where as you can easily gear any and all your character with Exotics, and play the game the same as if you had Ascended gear.

It’s not alt-friendly to you because you set such high demands for multiple BiS armors and weapon sets, that the average player doesn’t carry. Because of this self inflicted demand you put on, you’re basically forcing yourself to go beyond the gates that the game has in place That’s not a problem with game design. That’s living beyond your means.

Progressing vertically is not a substitute for good and challenging content. This game lacks the later, which is why vertical progression seems absurd. Stop defending Vertical progression as if it was the only way to play the game.

Whoa now. I definitely have to address this. You say there’s no good and challenging content? World bosses like Tequatl, FotM, and Guild Missions are available. Not to mention Jumping Puzzles that make me cry. If you choose not to do some of the challenging or elite content, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist in game.

That is, unless you play with a team of pro players that make the challenging content seem smooth like butter.

P.S. End game playing starts after you have BiS gear, your are doing it wrong, man.

P.S. – End game starts when you finish your personal story, and reach lv 80. But technically, there’s no real end game anymore, since the Living Story provides endless new content.

Ascended Armor Needs Laurels

Smooth Penguin.5294, you are trolling. You are regurgitating the same things over and over with no clear understanding of what’s even being said. I am not allowed to speculate in that manner any further, it seems. Noone has argued what you say, yet you keep regurgitating arguments noone is making.
Your points are invalid as they have little to nothing to do with the topic or what I or others have said to you, backed by facts that also are not valid as they do not pertain the issue that was being discussed. If someone else would care to feed this troll, feel free.
What would be nice now is some intelligent discussion of alternate methods of obtaining Ascended Armor, which is what I was hoping from this topic before being side-tracked. Or if anyone has any legitimate and valid reason why an alternate method of equal difficulty and time could not be placed along side the current method, I’d like to hear that as well.

The point of this thread is that the OP thinks Laurels and other gates are not alt friendly. All the people who agree are misunderstanding one major thing: This game is already alt friendly.

You get Laurels once per day, plus a bonus each month. This currency is used to get a lot of gated BiS content. Anet provides multiple ways to finish your dailies and monthlies. If you choose not to do them, you don’t get Laurels. If you don’t have time to play, you don’t get Laurels. There’s nothing wrong with this situation, as it’s completely fair to all players.

Example: Is it fair for a player who plays once a year, to have the same access and wealth as someone who plays daily?

People who make the effort to do Dailies and Monthlies are rewarded. And these players are then able to start gearing all their characters with BiS gear that they can craft. At last count, I have 312 Laurels. I would have had more if I didn’t buy the Mysterious Cat Tonic (which just sits in my bank). That’s more than enough Laurels to gear multiple alts with Ascended armors. I made the efforts to get these, even if I only had an hour to play.

BUT… it’s my own personal choice to gear my other characters. I’m not required to, since I’m able to play this game with gear ranging from Masterwork to Rare. If I’m too lazy to fully equip them with all Exotics, that doesn’t meant I can’t play this game the way Anet intended.

Funny, in all replies you are ignoring the main point …
Tell me that making ascended is not grind. Make my day.

I have 8 80s. All with 100% exotics and full map completion. I spent a lot of time for this but it was fun enough. Making ascended is just a stupid grind. You are not completing quests, your are not exploring. You just grind for material like a robot. After making 1 ascended I quit playing realizing that I’m not going to do this for all my alts.

Not having BiS gear is not an option. This was GW2 manifesto and one of the MAIN reason I bought this game and spent money for gems. To be sincere it should be a reason for money back like with “Aliens: Colonian marines” title. Product now is not as it was advertised. Period.

There’s a difference between “WANT” and “NEED”. You admit that you “want” to have BiS. And as you want this gear, Anet provides you ways of getting it. “BiS” means Best in Slot, or top of the line. If you were given a quick and easy means of getting the best gear available, you take away the need to do content. In other words, you want a short cut to the end game.

Anet promised no grind, and they delivered. No where am I forced to grind. I choose to grind. Being it’s my own decision to play content over and over, I reap the rewards with the sacrifice of time.

BiS gear gives end game players a goal. The gates on Ascended provide a means of an extended goal that’s reachable with effort. Not having access to everything and anything for all your alts within one day does not mean you can’t ever have it. Just as Legendary weapons were meant to take time as BiS and best in looks, so do Ascended weapons and armors (minus the special looks).

I think the argument falls in the Entitlement category.

Ah yes entitlement, the fallback position to demonise those who don’t want to grind.

“Here’s what we believe: If someone wants to play for a thousand hours to get an item that is so rare that other players can’t realistically acquire it, that rare item should be differentiated by its visual appearance and rarity alone, not by being more powerful than everything else in the game. Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games — we leave the grind to other MMOs.” -Mike Obrien, President of Arenanet

Some how, I think aNet lost it’s way.

Legendary weapons are no more powerful than available Ascended weapons. The same will be true when Legendary armors are released.

Well he did say you can get ascended amulets with guild commendations so I wouldn’t be taking what he says too seriously given the false information being posted

Yeah I misspoke. I was thinking accessories at that point. But ultimately, my point is valid and backed by facts.

1) There’s no forced grind in this game. If you want BiS gear, you make the effort to get it.

2) If like BiS gear, Anet provides different ways to obtain them. Laurels, Guild Commendations, Crafting, RNG chests, and even special event rewards.

3) If you don’t like the ways the game grants you access to BiS gear, you can choose to go the lesser route of Exotic gear, which are plentiful and low cost.

4) This game is very alt friendly, since you have so many different ways to gear and even skin your other characters. Compared to Ascended gear, Exotics are cheap. Plus, you have makeover kits, in game skin rewards, transmutations, etc.

Are you serious? Why not? Because it invalidates your statement? Fractals is the sole reason for Ascended armor to be honest. Limiting you to one character is by definition NOT Alt Friendly.

Because it’s an invalid argument. Fractals are elite dungeons. If you want to do the elite content, you gear yourself appropriately. If you want to be able to play the other 99% of the game, you don’t need Ascended.

Just because you can’t afford to do one dungeon, does not mean the game is alt unfriendly.

If you do WvW, full ascended is also required to play to the best of your classes capabilities. Min/Max baby, min/max

I play in all Exotics (except accessories), and can WvW just fine. What determines wins in WvW is size and coverage. If that didn’t matter, Maguuma would be wiping all servers due to our skill level.

As time goes on, Anet can release new content or events that might provide you an opportunity to get Ascended gear. For now, the guaranteed way to get it is to craft it. For those who don’t like crafting, that’s fine. They don’t need to force themselves to craft. Buy Exotic gear off of the TP, and be happy.

The argument at hand is that players want something, but don’t like the method. So the choice is theirs to make. If you really want BiS, you do what you need to do in order to get it. If crafting isn’t your thing, pray for ultra rare drops. If you don’t like either of those options, stick with Exotics, as they’re nearly as good as Ascended.

He’s also generously implementing sales tax on gem purchases (for those virtual items you don’t need). I don’t know about you. but I’m nominating him for Hero of the Year.

Sales tax is due to the government, not Evon. If anything, you can blame Kiel, as this tax happened after she was elected to the Captain’s Council.

Ah yes entitlement, the fallback position to demonise those who don’t want to grind.

But here’s the catch. You don’t have to grind.

Ah yes, another fallback position, used when there’s no real arguments addressing the problem. Yes, i don’t have to. It doesn’t change the fact that it is alt unfriendly. Extremely alt unfriendly, in fact.

The fact that you bring up non-existent problems pretty much highlight my side of the argument. This game allows you to gear and play all the alts you have.

People want BiS gear, but don’t like the requirements. That’s fine. You can have the tier right below it. Exotics aren’t much different stat wise, and are much cheaper. Very alt friendly.

Yes, yes, i understand your argument well. GW2 is very alt-friendly. Unless i actually want to have alts, and play the game. But hey, i don’t need to, so it’s okay.

Here’s your confusion. You’re mixing “NEED” and “WANT”. You can play GW2 with all Exotics just fine. You don’t “need” to have all Ascended gear, you “want” it. Thus your argument becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. It’s not alt friendly, because you can’t have what you want.

This is the same argument for all the complainers. People have this feeling that because they paid for this game, they should be entitled to getting the game to cater to their particular style of play. It’s ok to want things your way. Heck, I wish I could have Eternity, but you don’t see me complaining that it’s too hard to get.

No no no no no. Everything in this game is a “want”. We don’t “need” to play at all. We “want” to play it. All you are doing is saying that my wants are inferior to yours. No hard feeling though, I feel the same way about you.

If you want to maximize your toons then you need ascended gear.

The problem is that ascended gear serves absolutely no purpose in this game. It’s actually quite ridiculous. It’s a carrot that ANet dangles in from of the players (oooh… shiney stats!) Because some people can’t live without vertical progression.

So after the VP crowd whined, cried, and complained like entitiled brats until ANet caved on their core principles, you come here and say that we shouldn’t make our voices heard? That those of us who want to play the game ANet described before launch are acting “entitled.”

You like the word entitled but here’s another one you should look up. Hubris.

Yes we all “want” to play. But the major difference here is that Anet made this game so that you could play it without being forced to gear a certain way. And no, you can’t use high level Fractals as an argument for gearing. Only my main is fully geared with Exotics and Ascendeds. The rest of my alts are Masterwork, Rare, and the occasional Exotic. I can play, beat Tequatl, do WvW, all just fine with my alts. Do I plan on gearing all my alts? Sure, because I want to, not because I have to.

If it takes 1 month or 1 year to gear my toons, that’s fine. There’s nothing that dictates a time frame for when I must do this. If I were impatient, and had to gear them all right away, I can still do that. People are selling “T7” mats already, but I would have to pay a high price for it.

Ascended gear, like Legendaries, need to be gated. The only thing that should change is the ability to sell Ascended gear… like Legendaries.

Wow … I mean … wow … am I the only one who played an asia grinder once? It’s awesome that you have to work hard for laurels. I like the system.

Who’s working hard for laurels? Login once a day for 20mins and you’re done. Phew worked up a sweat doing todays.

I believe the biggest problem that this laurel thing stems from is that there is no choice. Noone is wanting is easily. Noone has said that, that I can see.
Its grind it out (either direct or for coin), do stupid easy dailies and craft it. Thats it. This isn’t earning it, nor is it difficult. I’m not against putting time in or working for BiS gear. I am against being forced to mat grind so I can indulge in crafting that I loathe to do.
There’s no option to actually work for it via any other means. RNG drops in Fractals/Tequatl do not count as another viable means. Noone should have to ask why.

If you hate being forced to grind… then stop forcing yourself. It’s you, not the game, that demands the need for grinding. The moment you realize that you can play this game normally without Ascended gear, is the day you free yourself from the “grind argument”.

If you don’t like farming, please feel free to buy all my mats off of the TP. I’ll be ready to unload them tomorrow.

And where i am supposed to get so much gold?……….Ah wait farm?

You can accumulate wealth through normal game play. Farming is a choice, not a requirement.

I had around 10 gold through “normal game play”. Then I started doing Sorrow’s Embrace Path 1 and Path 3, every day and now I have 80 gold. Please share with me your definition of “normal game play”.

That is the problem. Someone is doing dungeons 2-3 hours per day and claim it ,,Normal gameplay" But there is no true definition of normal game play.

1 dungeon daily for less than 30 minutes for 300 days = 300 Gold. So what’s the issue here?

And for 300g you have finelly leveled all crafting in 300 days and can finally start making weapons and armor……Yeaaa great!

FYI – I logged in to level my Leatherworker from lv 400 to lv 500. I spent no more than 6 Gold total today. If you know what you’re doing, it doesn’t cost much cash out of pocket. Here are some steps to help you:

1) Set a goal for yourself. Example: Max Crafting discipline
2) Learn the game. Find what content will help you to achieve your goals.
3) Play the content and get drops. Example: Need the T6 mats for crafting? Don’t sell.
4) Goal reached.

Same arguments as with weapons :-D Spending farmed material is same like spending gold. There is NO difference in it. You have to spend gold or amount of materials worth that gold. Absolutely no difference.

Huge difference. It costs you more if you sell mats you find in PvE, and then have to rebuy them later to craft. And I had stated that it was Gold out of pocket. So I earned nothing, and gained nothing from farming. Everything I collected went into my bank, and then used it to level myself to 500.

You need to learn to play smart. Smart players tend to be the ones with the most money, just like in real life. The best TP players have spreadsheets that track goods they buy and sell. The best farmers know where and how to farm to maximize their income. When there’s something you want, you have to make the proper decisions in order to get it. If that means saving money by not buying something else, or sacrificing the sale of your T6 because you need it later, you stick to it.
