1- grind is grind. and if it has any impact on charact. performance, it becomes necessary. nobody likes to be underequipped, also “only” 5-10perc. stats.

manifesto said clearly no grind. end.

however, just to answer:
2- a skilled player in exotic vs skilled in ascended would have different result.
3- you need it if doing fractals. and it’s very useful in wvw.

i think that everybody who likes grinding and treadmill should just say: "well, i like it. "
because for anet there are no excuses, what everybody links from manifesto is quite easy to understand.

I can easily counter your arguments

1) Anet said there’s no grind required in this game. They never said they wouldn’t have any for those who choose to do it. The grind is there to provide players with the option of going after gear. Otherwise, you can still enjoy this game quite well with low end gear.

2) Skill vs Skill + small stat increase = unknown. If you can hit for 1k more damage with your strongest attack, that means nothing when I’m able to evade the hit. No one has equal skill, so stat increases only give the illusion that you’d be better.

3) I can do Fractals just fine without Ascended armor. And there’s no Agony in WvW.

I think the complaint is a general whine that this game is not the game that ANet implied they were making. A lot of people made inferences and got their hopes up for something that didn’t happen and now they are looking for an explanation of what happened. But there is none and will be none.

For most people, when we don’t deliver on expectations there is an accounting. But what most people don’t seem understand is that ANet is really only accountable to their shareholders. As long as they make the expected profit things are good, if they aren’t making the expected profit then things are bad and they need to explain.

The business culture in Asia is a lot different than from the US. Players want information, and we’re only given what we’re allowed to hear. Employees can’t just leak information or say things that are counter to the goals of NCSoft. So of course this will lead to speculation and anger at times. I’m still upset about the (assumed) reason for no Cantha. But I disgress. Anet is owned in whole by NCSoft. They must meet expectations from the corporate body, who in turn must make a good showing on their earnings reports to investors.

As for the topic at hand, the Manifesto was a guide that showed why Guild Wars 2 was different. People would take parts of it, and twist it to what their understanding of things are. Some thought “no grind” mean they were entitled to everything easily or free. So when threads like this pops up, it’s sad that the Entitled players try to justify their complaints over their own misunderstandings of how things are.

Here is the reason why the manifesto was abandoned.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-06-08-nexon-acquires-15-percent-stake-in-ncsoft
“Nexon acquires 15% stake in NCsoft”

“Guild Wars 2 team hires Nexon employee as cash shop manager, changes already apparent”

As much as I dislike Nexon, GW2’s original Manifesto is still intact. Having appealing Gem Store items doesn’t change anything, since you can buy everything without spending any real world money on this game.

Super Gear Grind?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Smooth Penguin.5294

Smooth Penguin.5294

People always complained about how WoW had this horrible endless gear grind that was the source of all evil in the world. However as far as I can tell GW2 has a much longer, less rewarding and more frequent gear grind then WoW ever had.

In WoW you got a new set of gear every ~6 months. It all launched at once and it came with the introduction of 1-2 new raids each containing 8-12 bosses. It took 2-3 weeks to figure out the strategies and then another 2-3 weeks to get them down pat. By that time you had about 1/3 of your new gear. Then it took another 3-4 weeks of farming the raids to complete your gear set. All told it took ~8 weeks to get the new gear but you also got dozens if not hundreds of hours of new gameplay, new story lines, and new mechanics from the raids.

Switch over to GW2… here we have released new gear every 3 months, it came with NO new content at all. Was put on a gear grind that takes 2-3 weeks PER PIECE and does not even really require playing the game, just the market, and worst of all it doesn’t even make you hardly any more powerful in PvE since the game is so poorly balanced.

So why is it that WoW’s model was the root of all evil yet GW2 is claimed to not have a gear grind? As far as I can tell GW2 is 10x more of a gear grind then WoW was and it doesn’t even come with new content to make it exciting.

Perhaps you forgot that we got new content every 2 weeks? Also, there’s no required grind in GW2.

Smooth Penguin.5294

This is just another QQ thread from players who don’t understand what the original Manifesto was.

There is no grind required in this game. None. Here’s how it works:

Player A – I want these awesome new Ascended armors. I need these to be the best player in game!
Player B – Me too! Let’s start making the gear.
Player A – (looks at required mats) Wow! So much time gates! This is a grind…
*1 month later
Player A – I now have my full set of Ascended gear! Time to PvP someone in the WvW Boarderlands.
Player C – I only have Exotic gear. Let’s 1 vs 1.
*5 minutes later
Player A – How did I lose to you??? I have full BiS gear!
Player C – I have skill.

Moral of the story. Ascended gear is not required to play this game, nor does it make you a better player. It’s BiS end game content that you aim for. It’s a goal you set for yourself, and not something that you can just get on a whim. You put in the efforts to gather/buy the materials needed, and you’re rewarded with BiS gear. By doing so, you make the choice to “grind”. Anet doesn’t force that on you.

Hiring a second worker in a tower...useless?

in WvW

Posted by: Smooth Penguin.5294

In top tiers, the second worker is highly valuable, if you can afford the Supply for it. If you’re unable to defend camps to feed Supply to your holdings, then that would explain why some lower servers don’t use it.

Get Rid of Upgrade Gold Costs

Smooth Penguin.5294

If you can’t afford to upgrade, then you sit with paper gates and walls. Then your opponents have an easier time taking your stuff. If a player sacrifices their Gold to help upgrade your defenses, then you’re rewarded with tougher properties.

You aren’t Entitled to free upgrades. There’s a cost associated with it, as anything else.

Upgrades without gold costs aren’t without cost. They take time, supply, and hours of people’s time doin defense.

Gold costs for upgraded keeps aren’t paid by nearly everyone playing WvW so I fail to see how it is a cost at all to getting upgrades other than to make that one person poorer.

I really have a hard time seeing what function it serves and “giving a cost” doesn’t strike me as an argument to something that has a lot of other more restrictive costs.

Gold costs serve three purposes. It’s a Gold sink, plus is a COST that needs to be paid in order to make your Towers or Keeps tougher to take. In addition to that, it forces troll players to have to make a payment in order to queue the upgrade.

If the Gold cost wasn’t there, then anyone would be able to upgrade. There’d be no sacrifice except someone taking 1 second to click on a button and draining Supply. WvW takes strategy. There are times when you need the Supply to build defensive siege first.

Dont mind Smooth Penguin, his is a trading post player. I would be suprised if he even plays WvW.

I’m on Maguuma. The #1 skilled server in all the game. I find time to WvW, and hit the TP at spawn.

in WvW

You’re looking at it wrong. Low pop servers should have the incentive to go out and recruit more PvE players to WvW. Then you’ll have more coverage, rather than suggesting a change that only benefits a few servers, while adding huge negatives to the top tiers.

@penguin: it’s not a reward, as you as a refresher get nothing for doing the job. U can also keep the siege if someone else does the refresh.

You need to read my post again. By refreshing the siege, you don’t have to waste anymore blueprints or supply to place new ones. When you’re an active WvWer on higher tiered servers, you’ll come to cherish every bit of supply.

And as I also said, if your server doesn’t have the coverage to refresh, that means they probably don’t have the coverage to defend. Since you’d lose all the siege when the enemy takes over, you don’t have to worry about refreshing anymore.

not that hard to stop zoomers

in WvW

Posted by: Smooth Penguin.5294

Smooth Penguin.5294

Let me answer this as a player:

Consider PvP: Being able to zoom out farther than your opponent seems a definite advantage. If a PvP player can see the entire map, he/she certainly knows more, and can react differently, than those playing the game as intended (who cannot view the entire map through normal processes).

The advantage-giving provision of the program is a concern to me, as a player, as it seems clearly prohibited by the policy. " Our general policy is that anything that gives advantage is forbidden; anything that imbalances the game in favor of one player over another is strictly disallowed."

Dug this from another thread answered about 7 months ago.

Except that windowed mode and changing your aspect ratio are both features built into this game. Press Options.

Did you not read Anets response? Anything other than default zoom is an unfair exploit. End of story.

Gaile was talking about the use of a program that helps with zooming. People with large monitors or different ratios aren’t the same as downloading a prog to exploit the game.

Jumping Puzzle Raaage...

Smooth Penguin.5294

I give up. I tried this for 2 hours straight this evening but this is ridiculous. First of all, there is nothing you can do in order to anticipate the snowflake fall, how many times did it happen that you are in the middle of the snowflake field with no option to jump to the next? But ok…the rng is decent on this one. The fun begins once the presents come in. The only chance how to pass is, is to go fast, once the last red line spawns and not later than the blue ones are here. If they come, you just sit there waiting for a sheep to go and pop all and fail. But ok…after taking your random chances you pass to what? RANDOM windfall that literally blows you to the start of the puzzle? Anet pls… this is neither fun, nor good design, its just plain simple masochism of the highest rate.
/end of rant

Everything in the JP is on a timer. The snowflake despawns/respawns. The wind gusts (they also have an obvious visible tell). The giant snowballs rolling down the hill. Even the time it takes to get from the spawn point to the mid point. And yes, part of the challenge is that you need to go fast, or your HP will drop out.

It isn’t poor design just because you’re not good at it.

I think one of the most annoying tasks in wvw is refreshing siege. It gives you no rewards whatsoever

Your reward is the fact that you don’t have to drop new siege blueprints, or take the time and supply to rebuild it. If your server doesn’t have the coverage to visit Towers or Keeps by the time the hour despawn occurs, then you’d probably have lost it anyways when the location is capped by the enemy.

Or I recommend transferring to Black Gate. I hear they have 24/7 coverage.

RNG is RNG. There have been dozens of Teq kills that I would get only Blues and Greens. But I keep going, because there’s the small chance to get a Teq Ascended chest, or a mini Teq.

If Teq dropped something good each time, it would be more empty, as the fair weather players would stop doing runs after getting what they wanted. The hardcores would eventually stop as well, since their rare drops wouldn’t be rare anymore, if the items dropped so frequently.

RNG, like it or not, is where the balance is in games.

Real world factors do happen in virtual worlds as well. Things like inflation, when there are no checks and balances, will turn GW2 into another game from a company that shall not be named, where in game currency was pretty much worthless after a short time. Imagine playing 1 million Gold for a single Powerful Blood.

You can thank Anet for hiring John Smith. The policies he works on help balance item values to where they’re reasonably priced.

TTS actually helps the servers we guest to. We don’t form Overflows to get away from the pugs. Our main groups stay to help the server, while other TTS members go to Overflows for additional kills (because we have over 5k members).

Tequatl is Elite content. Don’t expect to just show up to the event and expecting a bunch of people waiting for you. You need to organize raids, have good communications with the other people on the map, and that requires leaders. Pugs could technically kill Teq, but you need each and every person there to know exactly what to do, and when to do it.

This game does have multiple ways to play. Meta builds are the most used because it’s usually the one that takes the least amount of skill to use. When you look at other “viable” builds, they require you to play a certain way for them to be just as effective. This is why skilled players don’t follow the Metas you usually see.

No new account comes with characters already on it. Here’s what basically happened:

3) Hacker already had access to your friend’s e-mail account
4) Friend creates the account, but doesn’t play

6) Hacker logs into e-mail account to grant permissions to use game account
7) Hacker uses new account to spam RMT website in game
8) Someone reports that account and Anet bans it

You now have to wait for Anet Customer Support to work with your friend in recovering his account. If the hacker has access to the e-mail account as well, your friend is up a creek without a paddle. I’m no techie, so I was hoping to get some help from the Tech forum community. I currently play GW2 on my Dell XPS laptop. But it does run really slow in huge queued 3-way WvW SM Lord’s room zerg fights, or even massive Lyssa chain events. It’s to the point where the only skill that works is my #1. I can’t even use my heals when I get massive skill lag. People tell me that GW2 is only optimized to run on a single core PCs. So in order to make my game run better, how do I optimize my Intel i5 core so that it runs only on a single core instead of my dual core (laptop i5)? Is there a setting that turns off one of the cores, so then the game will play at it’s peak efficiency?

Anet mind boosting DPS of Low Lvl in Dung

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Smooth Penguin.5294

You should try to level up first, so that you can be effective in the dungeon runs. It’s actually quite normal to kick players who are ineffective. Most players want to do runs as quickly as possible. If someone keep dying, or isn’t able to contribute to the team effort, we usually kick them and find someone else.

There’s something inherently wrong with someone wanting to play content aimed at their specific level (let’s say 35), and saying you have to level to be effective.

Perhaps I put it wrong. Being lv 80 means you’re at your peak efficiency. Even when you’re downleveled, you still have your traits. It also means you have better gear. But that’s not to say a low level can’t help. I’ve done runs with some low levels who actually do a good job.

It all comes down to how you play. If you’re a low level player, but can still contribute, we have no problems. If you’re a low level player, and constantly die or can’t help the team in some manner, then we kick.

You underestimate the drive of Trading Post players. We buy anything and everything to make a buck. Sometimes we crash and burn. Sometimes we bank huge profits. So don’t assume it’s “manipulation”, because the market is so large and dynamic, no one is able to effectively manipulate anything. The correct term would be “speculation”.

The unnecessary cost of the gemstore

I’m also asking them the question of how their financial figures work out and if regarding this is better to sell virtual items with no production cost for a higher price or lower price based on their overall demographic. Sometimes more can be less.

NCSoft is a publicly traded company. You can go to their corporate site and see the reports yourself: http://www.ncsoft.net/global/

Their Earnings Releases are here: http://global.ncsoft.com/global/ir/quarterly.aspx

But as for your question in a nutshell, the cheaper something is, the more of it they have to sell to make the same profit. So in your case, if your personal decision was that you would buy more if you could pay less, that might not be the case for all spending players. Some players with disposable income may buy regardless of if the item was on sale or not.

There’s also the corporate side you have to consider. If a company is able to sell $3 million worth of virtual items (made up number), you run the risk of earning less if you make everything discounted across the board. The goal is to increase revenue, and if there’s a steady trend of sales from quarter to quarter, some managers may not want to take the risk of losing sales by dropping prices. In tough times though, managers will take more calculated risks to boost sales, but that’s usually when the risk is higher in not doing so.

Please note that utilisation of third party software can lead to a definitive suspension of your account.

$10 a month doesn’t put you on equal terms with people. It just buys you Gems that you can use in the Gem Store. I think you might be mistaking GW2 for a pay 2 win game.

Here’s how to do it without spending money:

Step 1 – Delete all your characters
Step 2 – Transfer servers for free
Step 3 – Make new characters

You pay Anet for the process of transferring character data over to different data servers. If you have no characters, the only data your sending is what’s in your Bank tabs.

Jaymee, one of the problems with your thoughts is that you assume the Six are being forced out, or blocked by the Elder Dragons. Just as in Christianity, God gave man free will, and allowed them to set a path for themselves. This is why the Old Testament is so different than the New. One shows God to play an active role in the world, while the modern day one shows God to merely influence mankind. So it’s possible that the story in the Guild Wars universe is that the Six are allowing humans to resolve our problems on our own.

Second problem is that you’re mixing the Six “gods” as all powerful deities, on par with God or Jehovah or Allah or Buddha. In GW lore, it took a handful of humans to lock away two fallen gods, Abaddon and Dhuum. While GW lore shows that they are powerful, they are not “end all”.

/spoiler – The Six gods aren’t gone. They’re merely vacationing in Cantha. Anet can easily prove me wrong by unlocking passage there.
